- 1:04Speaker 2: I'm glad to be here.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Well, first of all, I'm glad that you got a
- 1:07Speaker 1: Memphis shire on. What's going on there? Lock it down?
- 1:09Speaker 1: What's happening?
- 1:10Speaker 3: Yeah, born and raised Memphis Center c been in Atlanta
- 1:13Speaker 3: almost a decade right now, But I played football University
- 1:15Speaker 3: of Memphis.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Okay, still they undefeated right now, right Memphis undefeated.
- 1:20Speaker 2: I'm not gonna jink some right now.
- 1:22Speaker 1: We came back and beat Arkansas ball.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Going crazy.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Well, congratulations man. You know, hopefully by the time this
- 1:31Speaker 1: airs they still be under fan I hope so. But
- 1:33Speaker 1: I'm very familiar with with Memphis. Been there a lot.
- 1:36Speaker 1: You know, the little watch the little ducks go down by,
- 1:40Speaker 1: coming by, the kids come down, go down the hallway.
- 1:42Speaker 1: You know, people at the hotel. If everybody ever been
- 1:44Speaker 1: there a hot chicken? Yeah, you know down there. Steve Harvey,
- 1:49Speaker 1: who I managed beent the years. Marjorie Harvey is from Memphis.
- 1:52Speaker 1: The family is from Memphis. So I'm very familiar. Been
- 1:55Speaker 1: up there a lot. So never went up there for Elpas.
- 1:57Speaker 1: I will tell you that I have never went up
- 1:59Speaker 1: there for Elvis, but there for me now. Serena where
- 2:02Speaker 1: are you from.
- 2:03Speaker 4: I'm originally from Memphis as well.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Okay, I apologize for just assuming he was just Memphis
- 2:07Speaker 1: because you had logos are yeah.
- 2:09Speaker 5: As well, went to the University of Memphis and we
- 2:12Speaker 5: actually met in high school.
- 2:13Speaker 4: Never dated in high school, okay, and we met surely
- 2:16Speaker 4: after he graduated and he've been together.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Awesome, awesome. So you guys are entrepreneurs, Yes, sir, I'm
- 2:22Speaker 1: gonna start with you. What does entrepreneurship mean to you?
- 2:26Speaker 3: And so it means to me, entrepreneurship being able to
- 2:29Speaker 3: set your own path. It means being a servant to
- 2:32Speaker 3: other people. And that's what I define entrepreneurship as finding
- 2:36Speaker 3: a service, finding how you can serve people, and there
- 2:39Speaker 3: you can ultimately build a business around around their service.
- 2:41Speaker 3: And so I just try to be better at that
- 2:43Speaker 3: than most people.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Now, you know Serena when he says that building a business,
- 2:50Speaker 1: you guys are partners. Let's talk about that business first,
- 2:55Speaker 1: because definitely, I always feel that you gotta have a
- 2:59Speaker 1: big business to expand the business. It's called scaling. So
- 3:03Speaker 1: you guys are scaling now, but in the early stages,
- 3:06Speaker 1: what was your vision for the business.
- 3:08Speaker 5: Well, Mowbray is our visionary. Mowbray is the big idea guy.
- 3:11Speaker 5: He always is coming up with.
- 3:13Speaker 1: He's a big idea that.
- 3:14Speaker 4: He's a big idea guy.
- 3:15Speaker 5: Right, He's always like, Babe, I got it. And for me,
- 3:18Speaker 5: I'm the implementation person. I'm going, Okay, if we're going
- 3:21Speaker 5: to go from A to Z, this is the way
- 3:23Speaker 5: we have to get there.
- 3:24Speaker 4: And so that's kind of how the dynamic has always.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Somehow, somehow. She complimented herself in that and that, like
- 3:31Speaker 1: you you always got these ideas, but she got to
- 3:33Speaker 1: come in to clean up. That's how that came on
- 3:36Speaker 1: a fast from me. I'm I'm glad you said. I'm
- 3:41Speaker 1: just gonna tell you that, brother, you know. But that's
- 3:43Speaker 1: a good thing because my wife does that to me,
- 3:46Speaker 1: you know, And I would tell you I don't want
- 3:47Speaker 1: to listen to her. She'll talk about rashon. You're just
- 3:50Speaker 1: learning your words, you're talking too fast. I go whatever,
- 3:53Speaker 1: but whatever, whatever, And I'm taking notes. I'm taking notes.
- 3:56Speaker 1: I'm taking notes. You know, I'm not on here, but
- 3:58Speaker 1: I'm taking notes. How that? How does that work with
- 4:00Speaker 1: your mobile?
- 4:01Speaker 4: You know?
- 4:01Speaker 3: I always tell the look, I know you're going to
- 4:03Speaker 3: figure out how to do it, but let me get
- 4:05Speaker 3: the vision out first, right, and then once I get you,
- 4:08Speaker 3: then start asking me questions.
- 4:09Speaker 2: But how you gonna do it?
- 4:10Speaker 1: How's it going to work?
- 4:11Speaker 3: You thought about all their parts here, right, I'm just
- 4:13Speaker 3: trying to see if I want to do it first,
- 4:15Speaker 3: and so yeah, I kind of cast the vision, make
- 4:17Speaker 3: sure that there's something that I know we want to do,
- 4:19Speaker 3: and then we start figuring out the pieces of it.
- 4:21Speaker 3: She want to figure the pieces out before we get
- 4:23Speaker 3: the idea out first.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Well, you know, now I agree with her, you know,
- 4:27Speaker 1: because a lot of people jump out there on faith.
- 4:29Speaker 1: But I would say that's cool, but please jump with
- 4:32Speaker 1: a plan that is right, Please jump with a budget,
- 4:34Speaker 1: because I would tell people that when you start a business,
- 4:37Speaker 1: there are three things. You should have an accountant, lawyer,
- 4:42Speaker 1: and if you have employees, hr those are and people
- 4:47Speaker 1: want to cut corners on all three of those. Now,
- 4:50Speaker 1: being a person, Maubray, you know, you're you're you're you're
- 4:54Speaker 1: expanding along with Sharena outside of taxes, which means that
- 4:58Speaker 1: you're picking up employees, real estate, restaurants. We're gonna get
- 5:02Speaker 1: into individuals and also gonna get to the Black Tax Festival,
- 5:06Speaker 1: which is another, contractors and all those things. And I
- 5:09Speaker 1: know that I'm not looking at just two people, y'all,
- 5:11Speaker 1: not the two main operations. So when I say the
- 5:15Speaker 1: word accountant, I say the word our CPA, our bookkeeper,
- 5:20Speaker 1: I say the word legal, I say the word HR.
- 5:23Speaker 1: What do you say back to me?
- 5:25Speaker 2: You know, I say, gotta have it all?
- 5:27Speaker 3: And you know, you talk about scaling what we have
- 5:30Speaker 3: when we first started the business Ms McDonald, and what
- 5:33Speaker 3: we have to have now. Now we have to have
- 5:35Speaker 3: a new attorney. Now we need a new CPA. Like
- 5:38Speaker 3: the same thing that works at one million dollars, it's
- 5:40Speaker 3: not the same thing they work at ten million, fifteenth.
- 5:43Speaker 3: In every stage, I didn't realize either. At every stage
- 5:46Speaker 3: we needed to kind of up the team a little bit.
- 5:49Speaker 3: And so yeah, so we had to allow people that
- 5:51Speaker 3: you know, to even know more about certain things than
- 5:53Speaker 3: us to can kind of help us with some In
- 5:54Speaker 3: some of those arenas, we needed a big time attorney.
- 5:57Speaker 3: We had to get a different CPA through the business
- 6:00Speaker 3: and stuff. So those are big, key, key things. It's
- 6:03Speaker 3: surrounding with a real quality team as a business begins
- 6:06Speaker 3: to scale, because it's hard to scale without it.
- 6:08Speaker 1: And I will tell you this, and I agree with
- 6:10Speaker 1: you because I remember when I and I asked the
- 6:13Speaker 1: money was coming in. You know, I had no problem
- 6:17Speaker 1: buying clothes, had no problem going on trips, buying the
- 6:20Speaker 1: car for going. I was struggling paying that tax man.
- 6:25Speaker 1: I was struggling paying I didn't understand those those bills,
- 6:30Speaker 1: you know, because I went, like you said, I used
- 6:32Speaker 1: to have an accountant, and it's nothing longer to have
- 6:34Speaker 1: account Then I went to a CPA firm. Okay, that
- 6:38Speaker 1: check is crazy, you know, but I know when anybody
- 6:43Speaker 1: ordered to me, they had it. They defended, you know,
- 6:47Speaker 1: and so that's how it works. But putting that structure together,
- 6:53Speaker 1: he's pretty calm and cool. His Sharina, talk to me
- 6:56Speaker 1: about your rope.
- 6:57Speaker 4: Oh my goodness.
- 6:58Speaker 5: So originally I was the HR, the attorney.
- 7:04Speaker 2: It was all yeah.
- 7:07Speaker 5: Actually at the point where you realize, hey, we need
- 7:10Speaker 5: professionals in here. And I got to fire myself from
- 7:13Speaker 5: some of these jobs. Okay, so that's what I started
- 7:15Speaker 5: to do. It's like, hey, you know, we need a team.
- 7:18Speaker 5: And you know, over the years that team.
- 7:20Speaker 1: And when you say that over the years, talk about
- 7:22Speaker 1: the years, oh yes, like when you really started being
- 7:25Speaker 1: you know, you all start with a party of too.
- 7:27Speaker 1: You got to start this the route when you start
- 7:30Speaker 1: bringing people on. What was that year that it clicked
- 7:33Speaker 1: kicked in?
- 7:34Speaker 4: So we started doing taxes in twenty ten.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Okay, just mom and pop, re and I.
- 7:38Speaker 5: We had an office in Memphis, Tennessee, and we were
- 7:41Speaker 5: just you know, learning how to do this industry. We
- 7:43Speaker 5: didn't have a ton of support, we didn't have a
- 7:45Speaker 5: ton of training, but we had a lot of drive, right,
- 7:48Speaker 5: and so we got to work, put our heads down
- 7:51Speaker 5: for a few years, and the business was growing, but
- 7:53Speaker 5: not at the rate we wanted to.
- 7:55Speaker 4: We knew we wanted to scale, but we knew.
- 7:57Speaker 5: That that wasn't going to be just us going out
- 7:59Speaker 5: and getting more customers. So by twenty fifteen, we had
- 8:02Speaker 5: the idea of saying, hey, listen, it's not just us
- 8:05Speaker 5: that want to make a lot of money during the
- 8:07Speaker 5: first part of the year. Taxes is a different industry
- 8:10Speaker 5: from a lot of things we've been able to see, right,
- 8:14Speaker 5: and so when we found that concept, we said, what
- 8:16Speaker 5: if we put a system in place to show other
- 8:18Speaker 5: people how to do this, and so we started one
- 8:20Speaker 5: Stop Taxes, the franchise model. We started teaching people how
- 8:24Speaker 5: to do taxes, how to structure their companies so that
- 8:26Speaker 5: they could be profitable, how to find customers in their marketplace.
- 8:30Speaker 4: And it grew from there.
- 8:32Speaker 5: And so we looked up after a year and we
- 8:34Speaker 5: had ten new stores, one hundred new stores.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Now these were now because we said a thousand virtual locations.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Now now we're talking about you said twenty ten, then
- 8:43Speaker 1: you said twenty fifteen. Were those were those brick and
- 8:46Speaker 1: mortar stores at the time. Okay, talk about the brick
- 8:50Speaker 1: and mortar financial model versus the virtual financial model.
- 8:55Speaker 4: Oh, it's night and day.
- 8:56Speaker 5: Right starting out, it was you know, paying all the
- 9:00Speaker 5: money out up front, trying to figure out if the
- 9:03Speaker 5: tax season was going to be able to sustain you
- 9:05Speaker 5: for the.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Rest of the year, right, right, And so those were
- 9:08Speaker 3: things it's kind of difficult, you know, trying to you know,
- 9:11Speaker 3: you got to virtual a brick and mortar business, right
- 9:14Speaker 3: when you got three months you got to make money,
- 9:16Speaker 3: but you got to pay these bills, right.
- 9:18Speaker 1: So it's just insurance ensuring like GAZZ.
- 9:22Speaker 3: So it's hard to scale with that type of model,
- 9:24Speaker 3: and it's hard to teach someone else how to start
- 9:26Speaker 3: their model when it costs so much money.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Out of pocket, right, So that's what we came a franchise.
- 9:31Speaker 3: Franchise is right, But what if we can remove the
- 9:33Speaker 3: doors and windows and make it to where you can
- 9:35Speaker 3: do everything online, do it all from an app.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Now we're talking visionary talk now, right.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Right, because I think I'm talking about this before you
- 9:42Speaker 3: got apps, before.
- 9:43Speaker 1: People talk this, visionary talk, before people.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Even trust taking pictures of their documents on the sales.
- 9:48Speaker 1: We're talking visionary talk, right, you know, visionary talk come
- 9:51Speaker 1: with Are you crazy?
- 9:52Speaker 2: Right?
- 9:52Speaker 1: What you talking about?
- 9:53Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 9:53Speaker 1: Boy?
- 9:54Speaker 2: Anybody?
- 9:54Speaker 1: Aybody documents stuff?
- 9:58Speaker 2: I ain't sending my ID on those the phone.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Anybody ain't.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Nobody? Go ahead, you know what I mean.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Everybody's prising no money right exactly right through their phone.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Nobody's going to trust you, right, Okay, before everybody started
- 10:08Speaker 3: doing it, the sounds crazy.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Okay, Now let's go to faith.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Now.
- 10:11Speaker 1: See this is where faith comes in because because you know,
- 10:13Speaker 1: when you're a visionary, people tear down. So where did
- 10:17Speaker 1: y'all go when they were tearing down? When it was
- 10:20Speaker 1: called you crazy? When they would call it, but still
- 10:23Speaker 1: borrow money for you?
- 10:28Speaker 3: So you know, it's one of those things where you
- 10:29Speaker 3: got to just start showing people right, and you start
- 10:32Speaker 3: doing it, you know, you know a piece. Okay, the
- 10:34Speaker 3: first year gets a little bitch to get a little traction,
- 10:36Speaker 3: and we were okay with you know, this.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Is one stop, one stop. Taxis went from brick and
- 10:41Speaker 1: mortar to virtual. Right, okay, let's talk about twenty fifteen.
- 10:46Speaker 1: You expanded When did the virtual aspect? Was that before
- 10:50Speaker 1: more covid? Because COVID has been a landmark of all
- 10:54Speaker 1: conversations I've had with small entrepreneurs or any business, did
- 10:58Speaker 1: you do it before covid after?
- 11:00Speaker 3: So we started in twenty ten wanting to be virtual.
- 11:04Speaker 3: So even when we had the brick and mortar stores,
- 11:07Speaker 3: we always had a virtual component, okay, right, We always
- 11:10Speaker 3: had people other places singing.
- 11:11Speaker 2: So it was kind of slowly transitioning to it.
- 11:14Speaker 3: From twenty ten had the brick and mortar locations, and
- 11:17Speaker 3: then we realized we opened up brick and later locations
- 11:19Speaker 3: and people weren't coming in them. This is when I
- 11:22Speaker 3: realized too, about marketing. Just opening up a store, people
- 11:25Speaker 3: don't just come into a store because you open it.
- 11:28Speaker 3: And so we opened up brick and mortar stores, no
- 11:30Speaker 3: customers came in right, right, And so we was like,
- 11:32Speaker 3: that ain't the way to go, babe.
- 11:33Speaker 2: All this costs customers. It's not it you know what
- 11:36Speaker 2: I mean.
- 11:37Speaker 1: And then our wife that was your clientele, minorities or
- 11:42Speaker 1: so they have that block mentality, you know, first quarter,
- 11:46Speaker 1: don't worry about the rest of the year, you know, especially,
- 11:49Speaker 1: so that's a problem too, right, So you have to
- 11:51Speaker 1: deal with your income being shuttered maybe eight months out
- 11:56Speaker 1: of the year, right right.
- 11:58Speaker 5: Absolutely, So again, season is a very seasonal business. But
- 12:03Speaker 5: again for us, as we started to grow the franchises
- 12:07Speaker 5: twenty fifteen, we started with a few stores. By the
- 12:10Speaker 5: time we got to twenty nineteen, there were one thousand
- 12:12Speaker 5: franchises in the system. And pre COVID, you know, the
- 12:18Speaker 5: world shuts down and we're already in place. We already
- 12:21Speaker 5: have all these stores that are fined and ready, and
- 12:23Speaker 5: so that just kind of changed the game for us,
- 12:26Speaker 5: and it helped so many families within our ecosystem not
- 12:30Speaker 5: have to have the same struggles as ever, but also
- 12:33Speaker 5: experience you.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Were virtual, yes, and the world became virtual, and the
- 12:37Speaker 1: world became zoom. The world became I don't mind looking
- 12:40Speaker 1: at you and talk about my business over a small
- 12:43Speaker 1: over a phone or a monitor. So let's talk about this,
- 12:47Speaker 1: because I will be honest with you, Margaret and Serena.
- 12:51Speaker 1: I am confused on how virtual works. Okay, okay, I'm
- 12:57Speaker 1: a traditionalist. You know, from a standpoint of when I
- 12:59Speaker 1: used to do taxes, I go on office, shit down
- 13:02Speaker 1: or waiting line and come up here, somebody do my TAXI.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Now you're talking about you have one thousand virtual locations.
- 13:10Speaker 1: How does that work?
- 13:11Speaker 3: So from the very beginning, we wanted to make it
- 13:14Speaker 3: to where people could be at home and send it
- 13:16Speaker 3: home on my couch, get my taxes done. And and
- 13:19Speaker 3: if Mr McDonald's my tax person, I can send him
- 13:21Speaker 3: my documents. He can prepare them from the house. I
- 13:24Speaker 3: can sign from my house, and neither one of us
- 13:26Speaker 3: have to go anywhere, right, And so we built out
- 13:29Speaker 3: a platform that does just that. I can take the
- 13:31Speaker 3: pictures on my phone. I can select your name and
- 13:33Speaker 3: an app. The documents are gonna come to you. You
- 13:36Speaker 3: can prepare them right there, send it back for signature.
- 13:39Speaker 3: I can sign it. My files is in my in
- 13:41Speaker 3: my inbox, in the cloud, in the cloud, and neither
- 13:44Speaker 3: one of us is left home. I got my cash
- 13:47Speaker 3: advance in my pocket, my stuff is.
- 13:49Speaker 4: Done, tax refund deposit.
- 13:52Speaker 2: No waiting in line, no, but no driving in traffic.
- 13:55Speaker 2: And this is impressive.
- 13:57Speaker 1: This is impressive because accounting is neither of your background. Correct,
- 14:04Speaker 1: not really, this is a business degree.
- 14:06Speaker 2: I took some accounting classes, but I was say, it's
- 14:08Speaker 2: all good.
- 14:09Speaker 1: It's all good, you know, you know, look look at people.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Ain't making donuts? Who own the doughnut play pop, ain't
- 14:15Speaker 1: making hamburgers. I don't think my man own chickenil A
- 14:17Speaker 1: making a chicken sandwich. Okay, So we talked about a
- 14:20Speaker 1: business model. Did you guys create it? But from an
- 14:24Speaker 1: advanced standpoint And it's from a standpoint of like they said,
- 14:29Speaker 1: from personal experience, How could I make it easier for
- 14:32Speaker 1: me and then share it through a business model? And
- 14:36Speaker 1: that's why I, you know, I have to commend that
- 14:39Speaker 1: because that takes a lot of goods.
- 14:43Speaker 3: Talk to me, Yeah, it took a lot of goods
- 14:45Speaker 3: to be able to give people something they never heard
- 14:47Speaker 3: of before. Because when you tell a person we own
- 14:49Speaker 3: a virtual tax company, like what is a virtual tax.
- 14:53Speaker 1: What? Yes?
- 14:54Speaker 5: It?
- 14:54Speaker 1: Yes?
- 14:54Speaker 2: You know what I mean.
- 14:55Speaker 1: It's like I said, I've heard it all and I'm aware,
- 15:00Speaker 1: kind of aware of it because you know, AI and
- 15:03Speaker 1: apps and stuff like that. But especially when you two
- 15:05Speaker 1: guys would start, you know, they were just you know, hey,
- 15:08Speaker 1: social media was kind of still ramping up.
- 15:12Speaker 3: Yeah, we started before social media, right, we started, So
- 15:15Speaker 3: we started where which is good though, because we know
- 15:18Speaker 3: billy to belly. These kids they don't know billy to
- 15:21Speaker 3: belly anymore. Right, even in the app world, even in
- 15:23Speaker 3: the AI world, you still got to go talk to people.
- 15:26Speaker 3: You still got to understand some belly to belly billy
- 15:28Speaker 3: relationships with people. And so we can teach people the
- 15:32Speaker 3: old school side of it, and we know all the new.
- 15:34Speaker 2: School stuff and AI to tech and all this stuff
- 15:36Speaker 2: as world too.
- 15:36Speaker 3: But in order to make it really successful, you really
- 15:39Speaker 3: got to be able to do all of it.
- 15:41Speaker 2: And so that's kind of how we hedged our bed.
- 15:43Speaker 3: We win and show people how the old school way
- 15:45Speaker 3: and the new school way, and then you put it
- 15:47Speaker 3: all into an app and a platform and they just
- 15:50Speaker 3: took off.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Stay with us.
- 15:52Speaker 6: More Money Making Conversation master Class coming up next. Welcome
- 15:59Speaker 6: back to Money Making Conversation Master Class with me Rashaun mcdonaldo.
- 16:05Speaker 1: I'm speaking to the co founders of the Rowing group
- 16:07Speaker 1: the visionaries behind the one stop the largest black owned
- 16:10Speaker 1: tax preparation service in America with more than one thousand
- 16:13Speaker 1: virtual location These are franchises, Yes, sir, How does one
- 16:17Speaker 1: get involved? How do they contact you?
- 16:20Speaker 5: So we made the platform the bullhont We originally we
- 16:26Speaker 5: used to come from a network marketing background, you know,
- 16:29Speaker 5: when we were in our twenties. That was one of
- 16:31Speaker 5: the first businesses that we were in. So there were
- 16:32Speaker 5: a lot of things that we loved about that industry.
- 16:35Speaker 5: So when we created the platform, we created it with
- 16:38Speaker 5: that model in mind, and so we don't have any
- 16:41Speaker 5: startup costs to get going and train for free. We
- 16:45Speaker 5: provide all of the tax software put people in the
- 16:48Speaker 5: system because we believe that if you truly take what
- 16:51Speaker 5: we were teaching you, you'll go out and you will
- 16:53Speaker 5: make money and then we can split up on the
- 16:55Speaker 5: back end and you know, it's no problem. And so
- 16:58Speaker 5: that has really been one of the reason since that
- 17:00Speaker 5: we've grown so fast, is that we've lowered that barrier,
- 17:03Speaker 5: that point of entry barrier for most people so that
- 17:06Speaker 5: they can say, hey, if I have a lot of drive,
- 17:08Speaker 5: but I haven't found the things that will work for me,
- 17:11Speaker 5: maybe this is it. And so one Stop Taxes has
- 17:13Speaker 5: been that for a lot of people over the years.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Well, you know the websites absolutely, one stop taxes dot Com,
- 17:20Speaker 1: One stop taxes dot Com. And when they go to
- 17:23Speaker 1: that screen or go to that website, what what's the process?
- 17:26Speaker 1: What do they do? What do they click?
- 17:28Speaker 3: It's gonna right in the middle of stage. It's gonna
- 17:29Speaker 3: say build my business online. It's right as soon as
- 17:32Speaker 3: you go in the middle of the page, right, and
- 17:33Speaker 3: you can get clicking on the about if you want
- 17:35Speaker 3: to just get more information. Our direct phone numbers and
- 17:38Speaker 3: everything is on there as well. Our phone numbers are
- 17:40Speaker 3: our Instagram And if you want to just go in
- 17:42Speaker 3: there and just sign up and get started, you can
- 17:44Speaker 3: do that.
- 17:44Speaker 2: As well too.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Now, when you started, you're an LLC. Yes, now you're
- 17:49Speaker 1: an S groupes Court. I apologize, that's Court. Why did
- 17:53Speaker 1: you shift? Well change?
- 17:55Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, initially it was just her and nine, so
- 17:56Speaker 3: we didn't have any employees, we didn't have any k ones,
- 17:59Speaker 3: we didn't have anything needed to flow.
- 18:00Speaker 2: Up to us or anything like that.
- 18:03Speaker 3: And so as we beget one business, you know, you know,
- 18:05Speaker 3: just two of us entrepreneurs. But as we began to
- 18:08Speaker 3: have all these other entities, Black Tax Fitts, Marti Garard
- 18:11Speaker 3: and Memphis, the restaurants, multiple restaurant groups, and so.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Then we have to start having Kate Launagar.
- 18:19Speaker 3: We had all these entities that we have, and so
- 18:21Speaker 3: the Kate we needed something where all this could flow
- 18:23Speaker 3: back up, and we had to change the whole structure.
- 18:25Speaker 3: And so there's all types of tax advantages when you
- 18:28Speaker 3: when you switch to escort.
- 18:29Speaker 2: But well it was just us too.
- 18:30Speaker 3: You know, all we know is just LLC in the beginning, right,
- 18:33Speaker 3: And so a lot of people, most people, let me
- 18:35Speaker 3: give me a business. LLC is better than nothing, right,
- 18:38Speaker 3: But as the business grew, we had to also again
- 18:40Speaker 3: we had to change with it.
- 18:42Speaker 1: So how does one market a virtual tax company virtually?
- 18:48Speaker 5: And so we teach people how to one tap into
- 18:50Speaker 5: their warm market, because we believe that again, your customer
- 18:53Speaker 5: base should start out at least a little bit warm,
- 18:56Speaker 5: familiar people that want.
- 18:57Speaker 4: To support your business.
- 18:59Speaker 5: So we teach them how to approach that warm market.
- 19:02Speaker 5: But then we start teaching them how to go out
- 19:04Speaker 5: and align strategically with other people that can send you
- 19:07Speaker 5: more customers. If you're in the tax industry, you have
- 19:09Speaker 5: a lot of different industries that can funnel and feed
- 19:13Speaker 5: into that customer base, and you can also help those
- 19:16Speaker 5: customers or those businesses as well with your customer base.
- 19:19Speaker 5: And so we teach people how to go strike up
- 19:22Speaker 5: partnerships with a dealership, a car dealership, or daycare or
- 19:27Speaker 5: an apartment complex and different places where people often come
- 19:31Speaker 5: at a certain time of year and say, hey, I
- 19:33Speaker 5: need a lump sum of money.
- 19:34Speaker 4: I need to be able to have a down payment.
- 19:36Speaker 5: For a car or moving expenses. And now we have
- 19:39Speaker 5: a resource to be able to get that to them.
- 19:41Speaker 1: So is there an onboarding process to get a virtual
- 19:45Speaker 1: one stop tax location.
- 19:47Speaker 3: So we built in this platform a whole learning management system,
- 19:51Speaker 3: so you actually go through all the different steps from
- 19:53Speaker 3: how to prepare taxes, how to get customers, what do
- 19:56Speaker 3: you do, how do you work the system? So yeah,
- 19:58Speaker 3: once you go through this complete training, then it's all
- 20:00Speaker 3: online at your own pace. Then we go ahead to
- 20:02Speaker 3: issue you out all the email addresses and give you
- 20:05Speaker 3: out access to the software and we kind of finish
- 20:08Speaker 3: your your onboarding process once you complete the training.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Let's go to something big. Like I said, we're not
- 20:13Speaker 1: gonna talk about the MARTIROO. That's the first time I
- 20:15Speaker 1: heard Martiro, but Black Tax Vestible how many years?
- 20:21Speaker 4: So this is our tenth annual event.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Okay, why it is started? And why was their need
- 20:27Speaker 1: for the Black Tax Festival which is in Atlanta, Georgia correction, right?
- 20:31Speaker 3: And so we started it because we all of our
- 20:33Speaker 3: stores are virtual for the most part, and so a
- 20:35Speaker 3: lot of them, you know, they would sign up virtually
- 20:37Speaker 3: all across the country. We never met them before, and
- 20:40Speaker 3: so it was so we needed something to bring everybody
- 20:43Speaker 3: together or we can be able to meet. We can,
- 20:45Speaker 3: we can put our arms around and we can give
- 20:47Speaker 3: them recognition for what they've done, and we get to
- 20:49Speaker 3: hear their stories. And I'm telling you, well, you hear
- 20:52Speaker 3: some of these stories of where these people were when
- 20:54Speaker 3: they heard about this business and what has happened in
- 20:57Speaker 3: their life because of it. I mean, it just melt
- 20:59Speaker 3: you down. I mean, it is an amazing thing. And
- 21:02Speaker 3: so once we started doing that, it just became important
- 21:04Speaker 3: for us to do it every year and it just
- 21:06Speaker 3: kept getting bigger. But now people push and work hard
- 21:09Speaker 3: because they want the recognition in black techs oience, right,
- 21:11Speaker 3: you know, people don't get recognition on their jobs at home.
- 21:14Speaker 1: A lot of time now with the words recognition, how
- 21:17Speaker 1: are you recognizing people?
- 21:18Speaker 2: So there's a whole award show that we do.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Okay, so it's a Black Tax Festival and there's an
- 21:25Speaker 1: award show, Yes, sir. How many days it's the festival?
- 21:29Speaker 5: So it's October sixteenth through the eighteenth this year, and
- 21:31Speaker 5: so two days is all conference content. We have the
- 21:35Speaker 5: irs coming out to give updates. We have so many
- 21:38Speaker 5: different speakers coming to share business opportunities, to share their
- 21:43Speaker 5: secret sauce on how they've been able to grow.
- 21:45Speaker 4: And scale their businesses.
- 21:46Speaker 5: And so we curate this room so that it can
- 21:48Speaker 5: be a resource to everyone that attends, whether you're in
- 21:51Speaker 5: the tax industry or not. If you're just an entrepreneur,
- 21:54Speaker 5: this is a great room for you to be in
- 21:56Speaker 5: to just soak in the knowledge, network with people on
- 21:59Speaker 5: a high level, and hopefully leave with better than we
- 22:01Speaker 5: found you. And so that's always our goal at Black tas.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Okay, So, because now I'm trying to shape because you
- 22:07Speaker 1: said a magical word, you don't want to have to
- 22:09Speaker 1: be involved with taxes to attend, Yes, sir, Okay, how
- 22:12Speaker 1: do you get around with that messaging? Because it feels
- 22:16Speaker 1: like if I'm looking for a tax person. I'm looking
- 22:18Speaker 1: for entrepreneurship, I'm looking for a bank law. I'm looking
- 22:21Speaker 1: for anybody that can help me at scale. Those a
- 22:24Speaker 1: type people that are going to be at the Black
- 22:26Speaker 1: Tax person. I'm not assuming that, but I think that's
- 22:28Speaker 1: the purpose.
- 22:28Speaker 3: Correct, absolutely, yeah, and so yeah, we definitely want to
- 22:31Speaker 3: attract all those types of people. And like we're bringing
- 22:34Speaker 3: you out our bankers from Chase to be able to
- 22:36Speaker 3: talk to people about actually, how do you kind of
- 22:38Speaker 3: banking you need because one of the problems with us
- 22:41Speaker 3: and it just pays me so much, but we aren't.
- 22:43Speaker 3: We are left out of the rooms because we don't
- 22:46Speaker 3: have the proper paperwork, we don't have the proper financials, right,
- 22:49Speaker 3: So we're underserved, we're under insured. And so we're going
- 22:52Speaker 3: to bring out people within these different alliances so we
- 22:55Speaker 3: can start kind of helping bridge some of this wealth gap.
- 22:57Speaker 3: So that's a big part of Black Tax Fast because
- 23:00Speaker 3: as tax professionals, we're the ones that help bridge the gap.
- 23:03Speaker 3: Why because we're the ones do the tax returns. Favorite
- 23:06Speaker 3: So if you want a house, who you got to
- 23:07Speaker 3: call your tax guys right right, And so us as
- 23:10Speaker 3: tax professionals that we're giving the right information to all
- 23:13Speaker 3: of our clients nationwide. We can start moving the envelope
- 23:17Speaker 3: a little bit. And so that's why we.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Bring all this.
- 23:19Speaker 1: So you Triton Awards, Right Awards, Tight Tightan Awards. That's
- 23:25Speaker 1: when you're celebrating the success of the Virtual tax, one
- 23:30Speaker 1: stop tax on us. Right, they come in. What does
- 23:34Speaker 1: that opening day look like? Walkway through each day of
- 23:37Speaker 1: the Black Tax Festival.
- 23:38Speaker 4: On Thursday, we'll start with, as.
- 23:40Speaker 1: You said, the sixteenth through the eighteen.
- 23:41Speaker 4: That's right, the sixteenth through the eighteenth.
- 23:43Speaker 5: On Thursday, we'll start with what we call Breakfast with Bosses.
- 23:46Speaker 5: It's a networking breakfast with some of the amazing business
- 23:52Speaker 5: leaders that we've been able to meet here in the
- 23:54Speaker 5: Atlanta area. Will have you know, a day filled with
- 23:59Speaker 5: general sessions and breakout sessions.
- 24:01Speaker 1: I apologize, what location? Where is it? Where the hotels
- 24:04Speaker 1: is downtown? Where is it that episodes? It's at Epicenter,
- 24:06Speaker 1: Epicenter that's in River Riverside, Riverside percent Okay, I apologize
- 24:11Speaker 1: for not bringing that up Riverside air per Center and Riverside.
- 24:16Speaker 5: And then on so Thursday and Friday is full of
- 24:19Speaker 5: content like that, activations things that people can can go
- 24:23Speaker 5: to breakout sessions, get workshops in how.
- 24:25Speaker 2: To use AI and business these types of things.
- 24:27Speaker 3: So to your point of just all types of different
- 24:30Speaker 3: business owners, like we talkt we go through how do
- 24:32Speaker 3: you really use.
- 24:33Speaker 2: AI in your business?
- 24:34Speaker 3: How do you regardless of the industry, like how do
- 24:36Speaker 3: you take it and help you scale your business? Like
- 24:38Speaker 3: how are you using SEO to become an expert in
- 24:41Speaker 3: your market? Right and to come to the top of
- 24:43Speaker 3: Google searches? And so it's a lot of things. How
- 24:45Speaker 3: you use in business funding? What kind of bank accounts
- 24:47Speaker 3: that you have? Business financials? Like, how do you really
- 24:50Speaker 3: go get business credit as an entrepreneur Because there's a
- 24:53Speaker 3: lot of things floating around of what business credit looks like,
- 24:56Speaker 3: which is we access to funding, which all of our
- 24:58Speaker 3: business owners need, But what do you really need?
- 25:00Speaker 2: Right? Right? Do we know what a personal financial statement is?
- 25:03Speaker 3: You know, the tax returns is needed parked, the law
- 25:06Speaker 3: statements that you gotta have. Like once we start teaching
- 25:09Speaker 3: us really what's needed to go into these banks and
- 25:11Speaker 3: go be bankable, I think we start moving the needles.
- 25:14Speaker 3: So that's what we kind of do those first two days.
- 25:17Speaker 3: Last day we bring it off with the gala and
- 25:19Speaker 3: we have a little fun. We're gonna bring Rick Ross
- 25:21Speaker 3: is gonna be our keynote that day. Q Parker is
- 25:23Speaker 3: gonna come in.
- 25:26Speaker 2: You gotta come in and do.
- 25:27Speaker 3: Some QQ did our wedding for us, one of my
- 25:30Speaker 3: good one of my good buddies, and he's gonna come
- 25:32Speaker 3: you know, bless us, you know, with some music, good
- 25:36Speaker 3: good people.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Q Parker, you know me, I know him well yeah yeah,
- 25:39Speaker 1: So I gotta call that surprising definite.
- 25:42Speaker 3: And so the last day is the awards. We get
- 25:44Speaker 3: recognition to all types of people.
- 25:46Speaker 1: You know, how many categories are there, how many awards
- 25:48Speaker 1: are distributed, and one of the types categories.
- 25:51Speaker 5: Eight categories of the tax tight and awards, so everything
- 25:54Speaker 5: from top revenue stream to marketing Guru and everything in between.
- 26:00Speaker 5: So we like to recognize people for different facets, a community.
- 26:04Speaker 4: Award, a tech guru board.
- 26:06Speaker 5: So we like to recognize people that are doing different
- 26:09Speaker 5: things because there are so many people that are doing
- 26:11Speaker 5: amazing things in the tax industry, right.
- 26:13Speaker 1: We know, the thing I like about interviewing people who
- 26:16Speaker 1: are have a visionary approach to what you guys are doing,
- 26:19Speaker 1: is that you're scaling outside the original plan. You're also
- 26:23Speaker 1: into real estate, you're also into a restaurants.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Why right, Well, you know it looks like you're doing good.
- 26:31Speaker 7: Why when you get missed by? My wife said, why
- 26:35Speaker 7: you wanna give me something else? But you know, it's
- 26:38Speaker 7: kind of a sense of to, a responsibility to. And
- 26:41Speaker 7: you know, once we got to a certain I know,
- 26:42Speaker 7: Steve Over said jumping, you jumped already, keep you up.
- 26:47Speaker 3: And so after the text business got to a place
- 26:49Speaker 3: like we felt like it was time that where we
- 26:51Speaker 3: could start beginning to diversify, right, and then so we
- 26:54Speaker 3: started looking at different restaurants because we you know, we
- 26:56Speaker 3: love to travel, we love to you know, service people
- 26:59Speaker 3: provide great experiences with people. And so we bought the
- 27:01Speaker 3: fat Tuesdays that they went off really really well, fatuos
- 27:05Speaker 3: you were.
- 27:06Speaker 2: So we bought one and we took it to Memphis, Tennessee.
- 27:09Speaker 3: But we we purchased the last franchise before they stop franchising.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Okay, so we bought the rights to the Tennessee market.
- 27:15Speaker 3: Shortly after that, two chains in his group and Snoop
- 27:18Speaker 3: started franchising.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, you bringing up so many names that note okay, okay, okay,
- 27:27Speaker 1: okay and so.
- 27:28Speaker 3: Yeah, snoop and two chains started franchising Esco so Boom.
- 27:31Speaker 3: We bought one of those, and then we took that
- 27:33Speaker 3: to Memphis as well too, and so again just kind
- 27:35Speaker 3: of going back there, giving back to our hometown. Even
- 27:38Speaker 3: though we live in Atlanta now, we still go back
- 27:41Speaker 3: there and we get back.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Well, the beauty of going back to a community, a
- 27:47Speaker 1: customer service or business they don't normally have, knowing your
- 27:51Speaker 1: market share, being a big fish in a small pond.
- 27:54Speaker 2: All those things.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Marketing is cheaper. Cheapers believe that was playing it right?
- 28:04Speaker 1: Oh yeah, right right, because the yeah I know right
- 28:08Speaker 1: across the street is like the hotels right across the street,
- 28:10Speaker 1: and you're going, really all this is what you're paying.
- 28:13Speaker 1: And FedEx's right, there were a constant floor of traffic
- 28:17Speaker 1: and you're right there, Atlanta. You'll be five times Oh yeah,
- 28:20Speaker 1: absolutely absolutely, and let alone trying to advertise, let alone
- 28:23Speaker 1: insurance and all that good stuff. So with that being said,
- 28:26Speaker 1: what is the future for your brand?
- 28:29Speaker 4: Oh goodness, so many things coming down the pipeline.
- 28:33Speaker 5: We have a few restaurants over in the Dominican Republic
- 28:37Speaker 5: and so we love being We didn't.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Just gonna slide that in there. Why would that? Let
- 28:46Speaker 1: me see? So on the cord, I heard about the
- 28:49Speaker 1: Martigorol festival. Now she's gonna throw out the Dominican Republic
- 28:53Speaker 1: a restaurant. Okay, keep talking, he said, if you may
- 28:56Speaker 1: be longer than I expected. I thought i'd be at
- 28:58Speaker 1: the ind of course, that's you're going Domesic Republic. I
- 29:01Speaker 1: can't keep it, sure, but that's a beautiful thing.
- 29:04Speaker 5: Oh but yeah, we we have some restaurants over there,
- 29:07Speaker 5: and we bought a yacht over there to be able
- 29:11Speaker 5: to rent out for experiences to people as well. And
- 29:14Speaker 5: so you know, as we look at the next few years,
- 29:18Speaker 5: you know, we're trying to convince the kids.
- 29:20Speaker 4: Now, hey, you know, what do you guys think about
- 29:22Speaker 4: going and hanging over at the beach for a little
- 29:23Speaker 4: while for a few years. But you know, who knows,
- 29:27Speaker 4: who knows? You're always moving on.
- 29:28Speaker 1: I've been I've been doing money Made Conversation match classes.
- 29:33Speaker 1: Twenty seventeen. First black couple that ever came on my
- 29:36Speaker 1: show said the word yacht and just blew right past
- 29:38Speaker 1: it like they've said like, because they've said it a lot.
- 29:43Speaker 1: They've said it. Mall Bra and Sharena have said the
- 29:45Speaker 1: word yacht so much. They just like saying pento brd
- 29:50Speaker 1: pent over to them. Okay, continue with your story, keep
- 29:53Speaker 1: yapread over there and make them feel smaller. I'm just
- 29:56Speaker 1: gonna shrink. I'm gonna be tattooed.
- 29:58Speaker 2: By the time. So now we're the place where we
- 30:01Speaker 2: really want to drill down into the restaurant.
- 30:03Speaker 3: Absolutely scale, and so as we scale, we want to
- 30:05Speaker 3: kind of dig into because their first restaurant, Esco Restaurant,
- 30:10Speaker 3: it maan it we did a million dollars the first
- 30:12Speaker 3: six weeks, congratulations, and so like when you have that,
- 30:16Speaker 3: and what's that menu?
- 30:17Speaker 1: What is that menu?
- 30:18Speaker 2: So it's I mean it's stripping grids, fishing grids. It's
- 30:20Speaker 2: it's lamb.
- 30:21Speaker 7: Chops, lost turkey ribs.
- 30:24Speaker 3: Our specialty turkey ribs, and so yeah, so it's all
- 30:28Speaker 3: of the you know, you all type of cool food there.
- 30:31Speaker 3: You know, steaks, lots of tails, you know everything, orsus Rockefeller,
- 30:35Speaker 3: you know, the drinks everything. Oh yeah, I love it.
- 30:38Speaker 3: Then we got the best and so gumbo everything there.
- 30:40Speaker 3: And so now I want to be able to see
- 30:42Speaker 3: how do we take these restaurants. What's what new concepts
- 30:45Speaker 3: can we get? We're gonna finish developing all the restaurants
- 30:48Speaker 3: in front of the fed ex Form, so we'll own
- 30:50Speaker 3: that entire strip.
- 30:51Speaker 2: There of restaurants.
- 30:52Speaker 1: Congratulations fed ex Form.
- 30:54Speaker 3: There's three three total restaurants that we're going to open
- 30:57Speaker 3: there in the next twelve months. So this given people
- 31:00Speaker 3: something downtown to and then keep expanding all of our
- 31:03Speaker 3: other and keep it safe.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Keep security a number one priority, absolutely, So that's the key.
- 31:09Speaker 1: When you get success, you skimp on the most important
- 31:13Speaker 1: things security because once the area gets bad from a
- 31:16Speaker 1: bad reputation, like the Linux Mall here and Atlanta almost
- 31:20Speaker 1: closed because of security issues with people doing silly stuff
- 31:24Speaker 1: around it, people feeling they was unsafe to go in
- 31:26Speaker 1: that shopping are beautiful mall almost shut down because they
- 31:31Speaker 1: had to up to security. Now people are comfortable going
- 31:34Speaker 1: in there. Traffic is popping back up because that's because
- 31:37Speaker 1: that's the you know, you guys have a first of all, y'all,
- 31:39Speaker 1: I don't throw the word visionary out as a joke.
- 31:43Speaker 1: I met that when I said I saw it early
- 31:45Speaker 1: on in the conversation affair when I was talking to
- 31:48Speaker 1: Sara about, you know, the vision to be able to
- 31:52Speaker 1: master a business, and that wasn't your educational background, which
- 31:56Speaker 1: means you had to educate yourself to be able to
- 31:58Speaker 1: be successful business. And that's why I've said there's no
- 32:02Speaker 1: there's no apologies to say that you don't have an
- 32:04Speaker 1: accounting back on your business man, you're a business woman
- 32:07Speaker 1: and y'all very successful. What y'all do you know? The
- 32:10Speaker 1: word chef behind your name or in front of your name,
- 32:13Speaker 1: and y'all great restaurant tiers. So now you're a chef
- 32:17Speaker 1: and that's that's what life is. But you're business people. Tillman,
- 32:22Speaker 1: you know he's.
- 32:24Speaker 2: Not a chef.
- 32:25Speaker 1: Okay, every time you go on one of this restaurant,
- 32:28Speaker 1: that food tastes cool. If he put a restaurant, your
- 32:31Speaker 1: boy going in or till the.
- 32:32Speaker 2: Restaurant tell you going in.
- 32:35Speaker 1: He does not mess around with his food and he
- 32:38Speaker 1: gives you a total.
- 32:39Speaker 2: I study him a lot too. He gives a.
- 32:42Speaker 1: He's also owns the Houston Rockets. Just get a little background,
- 32:44Speaker 1: one of the biggest restaurant owners in the country. Correct, yes, sir,
- 32:48Speaker 1: on part of the Wind Hotel. To go to The
- 32:51Speaker 1: Nugget in Las Vegas. He based in Houston, Texas. One
- 32:54Speaker 1: of the biggest donors, donors for the University of Houston.
- 32:57Speaker 1: But more importantly, you have eaten in his restaurant, I sweat.
- 33:03Speaker 2: One of the things he says is always have eggs.
- 33:06Speaker 3: And it's like, no matter what people you know, no
- 33:08Speaker 3: matter what time of day, it is like, always get
- 33:10Speaker 3: people what they want.
- 33:12Speaker 2: Right.
- 33:12Speaker 3: If you've got eggs in your restaurant, regardless of what
- 33:14Speaker 3: time of day is, sell to people eggs. So I
- 33:17Speaker 3: kind of take that same. You know, it's about hospitality,
- 33:20Speaker 3: like always saying yes to the customers. So I spent
- 33:22Speaker 3: a lot of time studying people like that and taking
- 33:25Speaker 3: some of those inspirations and putting.
- 33:27Speaker 2: Them into into our models as much as I can.
- 33:30Speaker 5: So we don't have a lot of mentors in the
- 33:32Speaker 5: spaces that we're in, so we have to go out
- 33:34Speaker 5: and we have to read, we have to you know,
- 33:36Speaker 5: do personal development to make sure that we're feeding ourselves.
- 33:39Speaker 5: Is we're pouring out into the groups and pouring into
- 33:42Speaker 5: the staff and things like that.
