- 1:24Speaker 1: My next guest is a five beta Kappa graduate a
- 1:27Speaker 1: More Halls College that's right here in Atlanta, Georgia. This
- 1:30Speaker 1: is just so appropriate. Alumnus of University of Pennsylvania Law School,
- 1:35Speaker 1: way up No South and North, and on May twenty
- 1:38Speaker 1: three this year, he wants a vival Ghost Island season
- 1:42Speaker 1: thirty six. Now that's something that I don't know if
- 1:45Speaker 1: I do that he did, and we're gonna talk about
- 1:48Speaker 1: how a board five beta capital you know he's smart,
- 1:51Speaker 1: not you know he's smart went to an island and
- 1:54Speaker 1: hung out there half naked for for a whole season.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Please work with the money making conversation when Holland. No,
- 2:00Speaker 1: how you doing window, man, I appreciate it when when
- 2:07Speaker 1: you based there right now, Philadelphia, man, Philadelphia born and
- 2:10Speaker 1: raised except for school and except for survivor. Okay, so
- 2:14Speaker 1: you were born and raised there, but you came to college,
- 2:16Speaker 1: came down to Atlanta for college. Yeah. Man, I had
- 2:18Speaker 1: to go to the best you know, I had to
- 2:19Speaker 1: go to the best school. So I had to come
- 2:21Speaker 1: to the a town and get my get my education
- 2:25Speaker 1: that more, get that good southern food, you know, get
- 2:28Speaker 1: that good Southern food on. And you went back up
- 2:30Speaker 1: the Philly home of the Super Bowl champions for Philadelphia Eagles. Yes, yes, indeed.
- 2:36Speaker 1: And you're a champion. Now let's talk about your world champion,
- 2:40Speaker 1: the city's world champions. You know, you're fighting for baseball,
- 2:44Speaker 1: your your basketball team. So Philadelphia is winning a city
- 2:48Speaker 1: of winners, and you represent the thinking. That's what you
- 2:52Speaker 1: represent that. You know, my boy Kevin Hart, he's a winner.
- 2:55Speaker 1: He from Now they gotta put you got the Rocky
- 2:59Speaker 1: statue downtown, you know right there. I hope he took
- 3:02Speaker 1: a selfie with that. When you wanted to survive or
- 3:04Speaker 1: you know, you know I did, you know, I did,
- 3:06Speaker 1: I have a good I have a good fixture right
- 3:08Speaker 1: next to the rocky statue. So so let's talk about it. Okay,
- 3:13Speaker 1: you did Survivor thirty six season thirty six season of Survivor.
- 3:19Speaker 1: You have been wanted to do this show for a
- 3:21Speaker 1: long time. Tell us why? So? I've always been um
- 3:26Speaker 1: kind of a well growing up, I like to build
- 3:28Speaker 1: like treehouses and you know, play around in my parents backyard.
- 3:32Speaker 1: And I guess about ten years ago, I started watching
- 3:35Speaker 1: this show Survivor, and I'm like, man, it's it looks
- 3:38Speaker 1: like a difficult show, but it looks like a show
- 3:41Speaker 1: that I could put all of my talents two And
- 3:43Speaker 1: it looks like a show I could do pretty well
- 3:45Speaker 1: at because I'm I was pretty smart, pretty athletic, I
- 3:48Speaker 1: played a lot of sports, pretty social, have a lot
- 3:51Speaker 1: of friends, and I'm like, man, this game requires all
- 3:54Speaker 1: those abilities, so maybe I could maybe I could try
- 3:57Speaker 1: my hand at it. Okay, cool, So so let's let's
- 4:00Speaker 1: let's the stage has been said. We know he's smart
- 4:02Speaker 1: Phi Beta Kappa at the incredible Marehouse College and Atlanta.
- 4:06Speaker 1: George y'all, okay, low school at University of Pennsylvania. He
- 4:11Speaker 1: talking to Okay, we know, did you get around. So
- 4:15Speaker 1: now he's been wanting to do this for like ten years,
- 4:17Speaker 1: so he was looking at you. So there was a
- 4:19Speaker 1: planned action. You you just like didn't stumble up on this.
- 4:22Speaker 1: So were you rejected several times? Did you apply several times?
- 4:26Speaker 1: Explain tell us about that. So at Morehouse I learned
- 4:29Speaker 1: the same proper preparation prevents port performance. Right, So I've
- 4:34Speaker 1: been watching the show for years and wanting to get
- 4:37Speaker 1: on the show. So as I watched it, I was
- 4:40Speaker 1: taking notes for years on strategy, how I would play,
- 4:43Speaker 1: how I will react to certain situations, what have you?
- 4:47Speaker 1: And I started started up planning I'd say like seven
- 4:50Speaker 1: years ago, and over the years I sent in many
- 4:54Speaker 1: application videos, I went to live constings. I never got
- 4:57Speaker 1: it through. Like when I was out of law school,
- 5:01Speaker 1: I was clerking for a few judges in Philly. I
- 5:03Speaker 1: never got it and had my shoeing turn on. I
- 5:06Speaker 1: was clean cut then and I never got it. And
- 5:08Speaker 1: then finally I take this career path change and I
- 5:11Speaker 1: started my own company, and I grew out an friend,
- 5:14Speaker 1: I got my beard, I'm kind of living my full life,
- 5:16Speaker 1: and they finally say we want this version of when
- 5:19Speaker 1: we want you to come on the show, so that
- 5:21Speaker 1: I think it was the preparation and also the persistence
- 5:25Speaker 1: and me not giving up and me continuing to apply
- 5:27Speaker 1: and apply and apply. Well, I think also the fact
- 5:30Speaker 1: that you made a statement there a transition. I feel
- 5:33Speaker 1: you became who you are today. You know, like you said,
- 5:36Speaker 1: you know, you didn't come in there, come into okay,
- 5:38Speaker 1: this survival. You're on the island. You said you were
- 5:40Speaker 1: coming in that clean cut. That's a look that don't
- 5:42Speaker 1: work on that I because you're pulling off your clothes.
- 5:45Speaker 1: The tide going somewhere, it's not gonna stay on you,
- 5:48Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. So so that look right there.
- 5:51Speaker 1: They said, well he we like him, but I don't
- 5:53Speaker 1: really think he get it because they want you to survive.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Because I'm a big fan of these shows. Another one
- 5:59Speaker 1: of my favorite shows, Naked and Afraid. I love that show.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Oh I love that show. Now you you get on
- 6:04Speaker 1: that show window now you're going to I think, trying
- 6:10Speaker 1: to start a fire, and know what I'm saying. So
- 6:13Speaker 1: so so I appreciate the fact that you're showing everybody
- 6:17Speaker 1: that even in this television show, you had to put
- 6:20Speaker 1: in preparation, you had to examine and have a plan
- 6:22Speaker 1: of action. And the key thing you said was persistency.
- 6:26Speaker 1: And also what you said was key to me and
- 6:29Speaker 1: hearing this process is that you made a transition in
- 6:32Speaker 1: your life. Let's talk about that, because you're doing everything
- 6:35Speaker 1: that people tell you to do. I used to work
- 6:37Speaker 1: for IBN before I became a stand up comic, and
- 6:40Speaker 1: did I left for stand up comic. I became a
- 6:41Speaker 1: sitcom writer when I love a sitcom right. I became
- 6:44Speaker 1: a television producer. Then I became a manager of talent.
- 6:47Speaker 1: So that's a lot of transitions. And people always tell me, man,
- 6:50Speaker 1: you know how to reinvent yourself, and I just tell people,
- 6:53Speaker 1: I'm not afraid to step out there. Tell us about
- 6:56Speaker 1: your personality window. I can't be afraid to stay out there.
- 7:00Speaker 1: You can't be afraid to take risks and and you know,
- 7:03Speaker 1: take a leap of faith. Um calculated risks though, like, uh,
- 7:07Speaker 1: I'm not just I'm not just doing something off of
- 7:10Speaker 1: a whim. I had UM when I was clerking for
- 7:14Speaker 1: a few judges in Philly. I was in civil courts,
- 7:16Speaker 1: when I was in family court, and I needed a
- 7:19Speaker 1: bed for myself and on my salary, I put the
- 7:22Speaker 1: point of these nicer, high end beds that I really
- 7:25Speaker 1: that I really wanted. So I decided to build my
- 7:28Speaker 1: own bed um and it was a It was a
- 7:30Speaker 1: beautiful piece of furniture, and I was like, man, I
- 7:34Speaker 1: have a gift right here. This is something that I
- 7:36Speaker 1: can do. And then at the time, I started building
- 7:38Speaker 1: more beds on the side. While I was still clerking
- 7:41Speaker 1: and working hard, you know, nine to five, I started
- 7:43Speaker 1: building beds and other kinds of furniture and selling it
- 7:45Speaker 1: on the side. So I'm like, you know what, this
- 7:49Speaker 1: is something that fulfills me. This is something that I
- 7:51Speaker 1: love doing. I'm using my creative um gifts and I'm
- 7:56Speaker 1: being entrepreneurial, so maybe this is something Maybe this might
- 8:00Speaker 1: be my pen So then the final Jewish that I
- 8:03Speaker 1: clerked for retired in UH, and I was like, man,
- 8:07Speaker 1: this might be the perfect opportunity. Um, my opportunity finally
- 8:12Speaker 1: met my preparation my building this business on the side,
- 8:15Speaker 1: and so finally I decided to go full force and
- 8:18Speaker 1: create this furniture company where I can have a creative outlet.
- 8:21Speaker 1: I could be the artist that I truly am in size,
- 8:23Speaker 1: be the entrepreneur that I am. And UH and do
- 8:26Speaker 1: what I love, you know. So this is a big
- 8:30Speaker 1: old this is an extreme change. Okay. And first of all,
- 8:35Speaker 1: how did you build a bid man? Do you throw
- 8:38Speaker 1: that out there like you know, like you know, like,
- 8:40Speaker 1: uh see, I built a rectors sense, I put together
- 8:44Speaker 1: hot wheel tracks. You know. I've glued together some airplanes.
- 8:51Speaker 1: You're sitting up here talking about you know, I built
- 8:53Speaker 1: my band like what playing? What are you going online
- 8:57Speaker 1: to find out how to build a b So okay,
- 9:00Speaker 1: I've always been good with my hand. Let's start off.
- 9:02Speaker 1: I should have said that first. I've always been good
- 9:04Speaker 1: with my head, would been able to kind of build things.
- 9:07Speaker 1: My dad. Uh my dad is an attorney. He's a
- 9:10Speaker 1: retired attorney, but growing up he always had me helping
- 9:13Speaker 1: him do things like frame out the basement drying, you know.
- 9:18Speaker 1: So I've always been handed and um and so I
- 9:22Speaker 1: I found all these random pieces of wood and different
- 9:27Speaker 1: things that I kind of pieced it together to make
- 9:29Speaker 1: what I call this like patchwork style headboard with like
- 9:32Speaker 1: many pieces of wood, and then I stayed the whole thing.
- 9:34Speaker 1: And that has been my aesthetic as far as my
- 9:38Speaker 1: as my pieces has been like kind of patchworky. We
- 9:41Speaker 1: used reclaimed wood and we learned with So there's like
- 9:44Speaker 1: this reused element, it's recycled element, this uh environmentally friendly
- 9:50Speaker 1: econstantly element to my company where we uh we take
- 9:54Speaker 1: you know, what might be considered junk, like well, we'll
- 9:56Speaker 1: carry down a barn well then transitioned a really good
- 10:00Speaker 1: which is really really good strong would have survived the
- 10:04Speaker 1: weather and all that good stuff. So so we're gonna
- 10:06Speaker 1: hold his thought. I hope you enjoying this interview. I'm
- 10:09Speaker 1: loving you, dude. Man, I'm loving it. Man. I'm on
- 10:14Speaker 1: the phone with a champion. He's from the City of Champions, Philadelphia,
- 10:18Speaker 1: home over Kevin Hawk, the Eagle, the Sevy six, the Phillies.
- 10:24Speaker 1: We're gonna be right back. More money man comes the
- 10:27Speaker 1: keep winning everybody. I just with Sean McDonald. You're listening
- 10:31Speaker 1: to listening to money making conversations. My guest is a
- 10:34Speaker 1: Phi Beta Kappa graduate or more House College that's based
- 10:37Speaker 1: in Atlanta, Georgia, where I My radio show is based
- 10:40Speaker 1: out of Atlanta, Georgia, HBCU grad. You know, my radio
- 10:44Speaker 1: show airs on HBCU campus across the America. So they
- 10:47Speaker 1: were tying everything in on this show. Plus he's h
- 10:51Speaker 1: he attended the University of Pennsylvania law school. I mean
- 10:53Speaker 1: he uses a practicing he was practicing law when he
- 10:56Speaker 1: you know, he was doing his own thing. But more importantly,
- 10:59Speaker 1: he was able to make a tra transition. And we
- 11:00Speaker 1: were talking about that. And I love the fact that
- 11:03Speaker 1: you're saying to Richard, and that's why it's important that
- 11:06Speaker 1: you have role models. And if your role model happens
- 11:09Speaker 1: to be a parent, is even better. And that was
- 11:11Speaker 1: a person that laid the foundation for who you are today,
- 11:14Speaker 1: your dad by allowing you to do some other things,
- 11:18Speaker 1: besides the fact that, like you said, he was a lawyer,
- 11:21Speaker 1: and and and so, but they didn't stop him saying
- 11:24Speaker 1: that that's all I want to do. And that kind
- 11:26Speaker 1: of opened your mind. So I have to ask you this.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Now you are there successful laws and then you people
- 11:32Speaker 1: always think you're crazy anyway. You know, first of all
- 11:34Speaker 1: your law, you're now you're making furniture. Now you want
- 11:37Speaker 1: to go over here and do survival? What was that?
- 11:39Speaker 1: What was that conversation life when it hit the streets?
- 11:42Speaker 1: Mr black Man, Okay, so so my time, I guess
- 11:48Speaker 1: you know, my parents had had known that I've been
- 11:51Speaker 1: watching this show and kind of a plane. But they
- 11:55Speaker 1: see me, know, you know, practicing, make it fun outside
- 11:58Speaker 1: and doing these things. But don't think they really thought
- 12:01Speaker 1: that I would actually get on, let alone get further
- 12:04Speaker 1: and a lit a little word game. So um I
- 12:08Speaker 1: I when I finally got the call that I was
- 12:10Speaker 1: gonna be on the show, I told me. I sent
- 12:13Speaker 1: an email to my my mother, my father, and I
- 12:15Speaker 1: have an older and their younger sister. I said, hey, guys,
- 12:18Speaker 1: all this work finally paid off. You guys know, I've
- 12:21Speaker 1: been applying and applying for Survivor, and I finally I
- 12:24Speaker 1: got the call I'm going out on the island in
- 12:26Speaker 1: two months. And they were they were pretty shocked. You know,
- 12:30Speaker 1: I can't believe this is really happening. They knew that
- 12:33Speaker 1: I had a final casting in l A. They knew
- 12:36Speaker 1: I was slown out there, but I don't know if
- 12:37Speaker 1: they really thought that I was really gonna make it,
- 12:40Speaker 1: And so they were pretty shocks. But at the same time,
- 12:42Speaker 1: they know the pushing I am. They know that I'm
- 12:45Speaker 1: good at like. I'm a hustler. I'm gonnat navigating different situations.
- 12:49Speaker 1: I've been talking to different people. I'm pretty athletic, I'm
- 12:52Speaker 1: pretty smart. They're like, we know, wherever we put you,
- 12:55Speaker 1: you're gonna you're gonna be all right. You're gonna ride.
- 12:58Speaker 1: So that they yeah, you're gonna ride exactly. And uh,
- 13:01Speaker 1: I think that. You know, in the game of survivorance,
- 13:04Speaker 1: it's a lot to you, but it's also a lot
- 13:05Speaker 1: of luck. In my seaf there was a lot of God.
- 13:09Speaker 1: It was God's plan for me to get through a
- 13:10Speaker 1: lot of things. And I found my way to the top.
- 13:14Speaker 1: I found my way to the end, and I got
- 13:16Speaker 1: it done. Let's talk about because you know you you okay,
- 13:20Speaker 1: you're flowing to the island. Let's get let's get a
- 13:22Speaker 1: little bit about that experience a little bit because you
- 13:26Speaker 1: tell us about that that that moment they you know,
- 13:29Speaker 1: they say, hey, game on. Yeah, yeah. So I'm I'm
- 13:34Speaker 1: thirty four years old, I'm in I'm in alright shape.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Um I get out to this island. I'm looking around,
- 13:39Speaker 1: man young like clady, and they're looking guys. You know,
- 13:43Speaker 1: a bunch of guys are in their twenty tiptop shape,
- 13:46Speaker 1: powing them and stroder than me. And I'm like, man,
- 13:49Speaker 1: this this is gonna be this is gonna be a
- 13:51Speaker 1: battle I'm gonna have to find a way. I can't
- 13:54Speaker 1: just muscle my way that. I gotta use something else.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Like I used my brain, I gotta use my social game.
- 13:58Speaker 1: I gotta use my knowledge of the game of survivor. Um.
- 14:03Speaker 1: So when I got out there, it was it was
- 14:05Speaker 1: a little intimidating at first. But at the same time,
- 14:08Speaker 1: I know my abilities. I'm confident in my abilities, So
- 14:10Speaker 1: I'm like, you know what, put me. Put me in
- 14:12Speaker 1: a challenge where I gotta shoot something into a basket.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Put me in a challenge where I have to swim
- 14:17Speaker 1: a little bit and then jump out and do a puzzle.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Put me in these challenges that require a little more
- 14:21Speaker 1: than just just strength, and I know I will. I
- 14:24Speaker 1: know I overcoming. I know and I will succeed at it.
- 14:27Speaker 1: And uh, it seemed like that That's pretty much what happened.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Like like my team I was, I was put on
- 14:33Speaker 1: a good tribe to start, so as a team, we're
- 14:36Speaker 1: pretty cohesive. But for a couple of people beefing with
- 14:39Speaker 1: each other, you know that that that will happen. But
- 14:42Speaker 1: we want a lot of the challenges. So if you're winning,
- 14:46Speaker 1: that means you're not going to turn to the council.
- 14:47Speaker 1: That means people aren't getting voted off your tribe. So
- 14:51Speaker 1: if I just keep winning, I'm not gonna go home.
- 14:54Speaker 1: But then so basically through the merge until the merge,
- 14:58Speaker 1: the merges were full trying to come together as now
- 15:01Speaker 1: a totally individual game. But up through the merge, I
- 15:04Speaker 1: only saw one tribal council, which means I could have
- 15:08Speaker 1: only been voted out one time because we just kept winning,
- 15:10Speaker 1: and based on my social play, they didn't vote me
- 15:13Speaker 1: on that night whatever, we woted someone else out. But
- 15:15Speaker 1: then after the merge, by that time, a few of
- 15:19Speaker 1: the big dogs are already eliminated, and I had been
- 15:22Speaker 1: playing kind of a low key game, and I was
- 15:24Speaker 1: ready to turn things out because now it's an individual game.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Now it's trying to spread to the end. So dance
- 15:30Speaker 1: really turn things up. Despite the fact that some guys
- 15:33Speaker 1: were bigger or stronger, some people might have been smarter.
- 15:35Speaker 1: I think I had the total package out there, you know, mental, physical,
- 15:39Speaker 1: and determination. That's what you had. That's a total package.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Throughout your whole story you was talking about you was
- 15:45Speaker 1: always thinking out there. He was always thinking, always always
- 15:49Speaker 1: What kept thinking out there was becise I'm a builder,
- 15:52Speaker 1: and I'd like to fidget with things. I was out there,
- 15:54Speaker 1: I take myself out of a situation. I go build something.
- 15:57Speaker 1: I go I keep my mind working. I go a
- 16:00Speaker 1: crab trap that's real intricate, that takes me, you know,
- 16:03Speaker 1: a few hours to do. Or I go build a
- 16:05Speaker 1: swing set for everyone to keep them happy. You know,
- 16:08Speaker 1: I'm the guy that people love to be around because
- 16:10Speaker 1: he's building cool stuff and he's making camp life a
- 16:13Speaker 1: little a little nicer. Yeah, they're building disney Land out there.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Disney Land out the survey. I love it. So what
- 16:23Speaker 1: was the prize money for? What was the prize money
- 16:25Speaker 1: and what what did you do? Man? Man? So the
- 16:29Speaker 1: prize money was a million dollars, and um that was
- 16:33Speaker 1: that was a great tex to get. But what I've
- 16:36Speaker 1: done is, um I talked to my father. We we
- 16:41Speaker 1: fielmed like a year ago and then it took like
- 16:43Speaker 1: non months to air. So I kind of I kind
- 16:46Speaker 1: of had a good feeling that although they revealed the
- 16:50Speaker 1: win live, you know, at the end of the season,
- 16:53Speaker 1: I had a good feeling that I had won. So
- 16:55Speaker 1: I went home and I told him one person. I
- 16:57Speaker 1: talked to my dad and I said, hey, Dad, I
- 16:59Speaker 1: s in I might I think I might have got
- 17:02Speaker 1: the job done out there. Can you give me some
- 17:04Speaker 1: advice on how to invest this money, because I don't
- 17:07Speaker 1: want to be one of these guys that gets a
- 17:09Speaker 1: big check and and blows it. So he took me
- 17:12Speaker 1: to his financial planner. Um. They it's like an investment
- 17:17Speaker 1: group called the Pennsylvania Trust. And he kind of introduced
- 17:20Speaker 1: me to those guys. So then finally thought sports. And
- 17:22Speaker 1: when I finally win and get the check, I went, um,
- 17:26Speaker 1: I took the million dollar check right to this company
- 17:29Speaker 1: and I invested it. And so now I am fully
- 17:32Speaker 1: invested in a diversity stock portfolio. It shouldn't it shouldn't
- 17:36Speaker 1: stocks just watching it roll up that stock markets right now?
- 17:41Speaker 1: That's it. That's it. And so in in April. In April,
- 17:45Speaker 1: I'm gonna take a big hit and I gotta pay
- 17:47Speaker 1: the about four tax. But that's a big hit. But
- 17:52Speaker 1: until then, at least that that amount of money is
- 17:55Speaker 1: still gonna accrue interest. So I go talk to a
- 17:59Speaker 1: tax planner, get the fine benefit plan. The fine benefit plan.
- 18:04Speaker 1: You can take that FOLLEL hundred and put it in
- 18:06Speaker 1: there and you don't pay them nothing. Okay, okay, just
- 18:10Speaker 1: just think this out. A lot of people think you
- 18:12Speaker 1: gotta pay taxes and everything, and if they're there, they're
- 18:15Speaker 1: strategic strategic angles of this is legitimate. I don't. I
- 18:20Speaker 1: don't give our bad advice to my show unless it's
- 18:22Speaker 1: a lifestyle that I participate in. But don't feel that
- 18:26Speaker 1: you can give away that whole four hundred thousands. Okay, alright,
- 18:30Speaker 1: so define benefit plan. Okay, it's something you have to
- 18:34Speaker 1: keep up going. But you you you got a business,
- 18:37Speaker 1: you got a charity engagement you're dealing with, So just
- 18:40Speaker 1: just don't do it. Just don't give it away like that. Okay.
- 18:44Speaker 1: I'm glad, okay, because we're friends now because I love you, man,
- 18:47Speaker 1: I really I say that, man, because your energies right,
- 18:51Speaker 1: and I'm I consider your friend. Now, let's talk about
- 18:53Speaker 1: a couple of things before we wrap this up. Give
- 18:56Speaker 1: another shout out about your furniture business, and then I
- 18:58Speaker 1: want to talk about your charitable causes. Wrap this guy. Yes, So, um,

- 20:01Speaker 1: was doing the a charity event out there. Every year
- 20:03Speaker 1: I host a basketball cap out there in Treasure Beach.
- 20:06Speaker 1: We brought fifty coaches from the U S out there
- 20:10Speaker 1: and we coached eight hundred kids out there and basically
- 20:13Speaker 1: we brought we raised so much money we brought baskets,
- 20:16Speaker 1: we brought sneakers, short shoes, and we spent these kids
- 20:20Speaker 1: for the whole week, eight hundred kids. And uh, this
- 20:22Speaker 1: is something I do every year. It's the p mb L.
