- 0:00From North London lights to the mercy rain, to
- 0:06sky blue nights when the champions reign. Three
- 0:11voices arise when the whistle blows. Same beautiful
- 0:15game, different colors we chose. Football is
- 0:19life. We're losing on you all night. From the
- 0:24terrace to the mic, football is life. Hey folks,
- 0:31welcome to our latest episode of Football is
- 0:33Life. Here we are, we're back, it's the World
- 0:36Cup, we're in the middle of it all, and it's
- 0:38been a start, right? It's been fun. Are we enjoying
- 0:42it so far, boys? I mean, look, Mike, better for
- 0:45you time -wise, obviously harder for us to see
- 0:47all the games, waking up in the morning, seeing
- 0:49a bunch of scores, a bunch of goals, watching
- 0:50highlights for us. Checking our social feed to
- 0:53see what's going on, yeah. Yeah, yeah. How's
- 0:55it been in North Carolina? I mean, listen, I
- 0:57do have to mention, congratulations to the Carolina
- 0:59Hurricanes. Yes, yes. Not a hockey podcast, but
- 1:03yes, well done. Yeah, a new guy at my work, Jesse
- 1:06Riggleman, he loves near you, Mike. He's a big
- 1:09Canes fan, season ticket holder. So he's very,
- 1:12very happy. Buzzing, yep. Parade is tomorrow.
- 1:15Yeah, oh, there you go. That's it. Get the pretz,
- 1:17there we go. We'll probably... I'm sure you'll
- 1:20be out and about. What do you think, Mike? How's
- 1:22it been where you are? I know you don't have
- 1:27games there, but is there any noticeable excitement
- 1:31or do you feel not particularly in North Carolina?
- 1:34Actually, North Carolina is one of the relative
- 1:40hot spots for football. We've got a huge club
- 1:45development system, one of the biggest in the
- 1:47country. And we have a women's professional team
- 1:52that's... perennially dominant so it is a big
- 1:57hot spot um you know i i'm plugged into it because
- 2:00my son played and and all that so there's a lot
- 2:03of buzz and uh and so it's it's uh it's definitely
- 2:07um exciting we had some uh some friendlies going
- 2:11on before the uh the tournament kicked off but
- 2:13yeah no uh no tournament games here but definitely
- 2:16a buzz now that the world cup is sort of the
- 2:20feature story and you know the nba is over the
- 2:22nhl is over we got you know the uh the u .s open
- 2:25is going on this weekend for father's day but
- 2:27other than that rory mackleroy is doing okay
- 2:30had a decent start go on rory son go on yeah
- 2:33So it's definitely taking over media all over
- 2:38the place, and there's absolutely a buzz about
- 2:41it. I'm sure we'll come to it. One of the biggest
- 2:43buzzes is just the buzz. Hey, top of our group,
- 2:48baby. I mean, Balogun was like, where did that
- 2:52come from? You know, Arsenal legend, Balogun.
- 2:57Yeah. So, but I'm sure that's generally, I've
- 3:00seen that that feels regenerating, but there
- 3:02seems to be a bit of negativity. And the fans
- 3:05that, like the atmosphere that was provided for
- 3:09that first game and the result that came from
- 3:12it has really been a catalyst. Okay, nice. Well,
- 3:16listen, I mean, take that, hold my beer. Scotland
- 3:18fans in Boston. Listen, to be honest, you may
- 3:22as well just give us the World Cup now because
- 3:24we deserve it. Just for the off -field antics
- 3:26alone. I'm here for a U .S.-Scotland final. Let's
- 3:31do it. Dude, we'd smoke you. John McGinn. I think
- 3:35the United States has adopted them as their second
- 3:40team, for sure. I just love, obviously, as you
- 3:42know, Mike, you're from Boston. I've spent a
- 3:44lot of time in Boston. I love the city dearly.
- 3:46I love, I fucking love Duncan. So, you know,
- 3:49I was literally like, you know, kind of adopted
- 3:51Bostonian. I've got all my Boston sports team
- 3:54paraphernalia. Thanks to you, Mike. But yeah,
- 3:57I mean, look. it's one of those moments being
- 3:59so proud to be Scottish. You just know, you know,
- 4:01the fans of tartan army are just, there is no
- 4:04fan base. I don't think in the world that even
- 4:06comes remotely close. And you know, I love though
- 4:09about like, but like a lot of the Bostonians,
- 4:11cause you're not overly exposed. It is funny.
- 4:13Cause like Irish people just are famously around
- 4:15the world because of the connections. Right.
- 4:16So you're talking about Patty's day, all these
- 4:19pubs, like we're doing three or four times the
- 4:21business than we did on St. Patty's weekend.
- 4:23And it's like, there's like, we haven't ever
- 4:25seen people. that just party consume drink but
- 4:29also in a way that it's all fun it's all good
- 4:31natured like people are actually saying boston
- 4:35has never been so alive and violent it's the
- 4:38euphoria my son can confirm like he lives there
- 4:41right now and it is absolute chaos in a great
- 4:45way and let's not lose sight of the fact that
- 4:47boston which has a huge irish base right like
- 4:50i mean famous for drinking yeah and and scotland
- 4:55has consumed every ounce of beer that's in the
- 4:57city. Like, that's, like, hats off. Well done.
- 5:01I know. Bravo, lads. Bravo. Well played. Tartan
- 5:03Army. Put in all the other fans. I mean, listen.
- 5:05Did you see the light -up of Gillette Stadium
- 5:09with the tartan coloring? It was cool. Listen,
- 5:13Florida -Scotland was at 125 decibels, broke
- 5:15a record. They took over Fenway Park. I loved
- 5:18it. You know what, Scotland fans, I thought it
- 5:20was impossible. I've been to Fenway, right? We've
- 5:22been to Fenway, Mike, together. Yeah. I thought
- 5:24it's impossible to make this game fun. The Tartan
- 5:27Army show up and go, we'll show you how to do
- 5:28it, guys. And they made a baseball game electric.
- 5:31Electric. Yeah. So, I mean, I love just seeing,
- 5:35I mean, if anyone's been to Boston, you get these,
- 5:37you know, like these hardened Bostonians. And,
- 5:39you know, they're a certain breed in America,
- 5:41right? But it's the act. Got to pack the car
- 5:43in the water. But I love hearing them, like,
- 5:47you know, the way they screed that they do that
- 5:49kind of like you could do the accent, Mike, but
- 5:50they are and the way they're speaking so wonderfully
- 5:53about the Scottish fans. And these are like your
- 5:55hard and true Bostonian custodians of the city.
- 5:58And they're just like, we've never met people
- 6:01like this. We just haven't met people. So listen,
- 6:03best thing that's happened for Scottish tourism
- 6:05in a long time. We should hopefully get a reciprocal,
- 6:09a big, you know, exodus from Massachusetts over
- 6:11to Scotland. To come back over here, we'll show
- 6:15you the hospitality here too, folks. But yeah,
- 6:17if only World Cups were won on being the best
- 6:20fans. But we did win our first game. We did.
- 6:25It was ugly. It was ugly. But we won it against
- 6:30Haiti. We won it 1 -0. It was super John McGinn.
- 6:32We got McGinn. Super John McGinn. It wasn't pretty
- 6:38at all. It was nerve -wracking at the end. But
- 6:42in a way, you know, again, I try and stay positive
- 6:44in these things. I don't love the manager. I
- 6:45don't love their approach. I don't love the mindset
- 6:47we go into these games. We could beat them 2
- 6:49-3 -4 -0 if we really, really approach the game
- 6:53in the right way. But I understand it's the occasion
- 6:56sometimes, the nerves. And look, we go into tonight's
- 6:58game against Morocco needing a point from the
- 7:00next two games to qualify, which is huge. Morocco
- 7:04are not, you know, they're a good team. I don't
- 7:06think they're a tier one up there with the Francis
- 7:08of the world. But they're certainly the next
- 7:11tier down from that. So that will be a test tonight.
- 7:13So we need some mammoth performances. Foxborough
- 7:16Stadium, we're coming again. Flower of Scotland.
- 7:19It's going to be absolutely fantastic. So I cannot
- 7:22wait for that tonight. So, yeah, got a little
- 7:25watch party here. So that's going to be fun.
- 7:26Nice. Waza, what do I have for you, mate? You've
- 7:29been quiet. So tell us, I mean, what's your take?
- 7:32So obviously I'm just going to wax lyrical about
- 7:34Scotland and how wonderful we are. So I'm going
- 7:35to enjoy it while it's good because it could
- 7:37go south quickly. But yeah, what about you, Waza?
- 7:40What's your take on the tournament so far? It's
- 7:43been, it's strange. It's been equal parts predictable,
- 7:47equal parts unpredictable, right? Like, for example,
- 7:50we did not expect, like no one would have walked
- 7:53into this entire tournament and said, you know
- 7:55what? Iran versus New Zealand. it's going to
- 7:57be a banger. Like, no one thought that for one
- 8:00second. And also, just a quick shout out to the
- 8:05Iranian football players. Like, the quality of
- 8:09the lids and the beards, like, really, really
- 8:11strong. Like, honestly, there's a reason that
- 8:13the American women are really worried about them
- 8:15coming into the country, because they'll just
- 8:16be swimming. So, I feel like we have had some
- 8:21surprises, but we've also not. Like, for example,
- 8:24Netherlands completely fumbling the bag. Like,
- 8:27they are just, honestly, they are such chokers.
- 8:30I can't. Is it a mentality thing at this point?
- 8:33Is it a tactics thing at this point? Like, I
- 8:35don't understand, like, how a team that is pretty
- 8:38stacked everywhere apart from up front does this
- 8:41badly. They played Japan, right? They played
- 8:44Japan. Japan were brilliant. Japan are brilliant.
- 8:47Japan are. That's my point. I thought they were
- 8:51a dark horse. They're dark horses. They're brilliant.
- 8:53I saw them play in Scotland. I saw them play
- 8:55against England before the World Cup. I don't
- 8:57think they're going to go out there. I don't
- 8:59have them as a dark horse because I think it's
- 9:01pretty clear they're good. I expect them to get
- 9:04to the quarterfinals. That's my expectation.
- 9:07I think, you know, if they got deeper than that,
- 9:09that would be like, wow. But they just work their
- 9:12socks off. And they do have some quality. They
- 9:14absolutely do have quality, but it's the work
- 9:16rate they're so hard to play against. And they
- 9:19play some good football, I'll tell you that.
- 9:21But yes, but no, no, I mean, Holland looked,
- 9:23you know, defensively looked a little bit, like,
- 9:26yeah, a little bit shaky. yes what do we think
- 9:30I mean by the way France when they turned it
- 9:32on in the second half when they decided to play
- 9:34oh la la oh you know what you know what you know
- 9:39what really hurts me Senegal should have been
- 9:411 -0 up at least at least Senegal were brilliant
- 9:43in the first half brilliant in the first half
- 9:45but they just couldn't and then you know a France
- 9:48you know just get you kind of go you just kind
- 9:50of feel like if you're not they just have gears
- 9:52like it's almost like they're just saving it
- 9:55so yeah that's that's pretty terrifying. Yeah.
- 9:58We also had this, I don't know if you've heard
- 10:00of this. We guys called Lionel Messi doing it.
- 10:02Yeah. Just, just, just doing messy things with
- 10:04hat tricks. I mean, he's just look again. Again,
- 10:10everyone, anyone who says that Ronaldo is, I
- 10:13was about to say it, Mike, Mike, I understand
- 10:14football. Exactly. I just lose respect for them.
- 10:17I had this debate last week with my best mates,
- 10:20son. I'm just trying to explain to him, but he
- 10:24just doesn't get it. I'm just like, yeah. It's
- 10:27not even... Yeah, and you ask anyone who's played
- 10:30against the two of them. You can stop Cristiano.
- 10:32I just... I don't know how you... He's so...
- 10:36At his age, doing what he's doing. I've seen
- 10:40him in his prime. I've never seen a player glide
- 10:42over the grass with complete control of the ball.
- 10:45He looks like an ice skater. Yeah, he's mad.
- 10:48So, I mean, Argentina looked good. France looked
- 10:50good. Spain had a bit of a wobble, right? They
- 10:52did. England looked terrible first half defensively.
- 10:56And then played 20 minutes in the second half
- 10:58of just like, wow. Just go and attack and just
- 11:01believe. So you can show it and it shows what
- 11:03talent they have. Look again, a pretty average
- 11:05Croatia team, very aging Croatia team. So again,
- 11:07I wouldn't get too carried away. England's defensive
- 11:09concerns for me are huge. That was my thing before
- 11:12the tournament. I just don't think defense, I
- 11:13don't think Rhys James is a, everyone talks about
- 11:16Trent. I'm like, what sort of defender do you
- 11:18think Rhys James? I just don't think he's a very
- 11:19good defender. I don't think Nico O 'Reilly is
- 11:22a particularly good defender. Again. That's not
- 11:24really the reason you play them, right? They're
- 11:25so good on the ball. They're attacking wingbacks.
- 11:27They're so good on the ball. Like, Nico Reilly,
- 11:29he's great, but he's a midfielder. I think James
- 11:32is better in midfield. He's better in centre
- 11:34midfield than he is at right back. So I do think
- 11:36it'll be interesting. Maybe that's why you might
- 11:38see your Jed Spences and stuff play more against,
- 11:41like, if they get to the knockouts in the big
- 11:43games, you might see some changes there because
- 11:46they do look to defend. John Stones is just,
- 11:48I don't know why they took him because he's...
- 11:49Basically, they're injured all year. It's weird.
- 11:52Yeah, a bit of a bizarre one. And I'm not totally
- 11:54convinced by Konsa and Gehi. I don't think that
- 11:57it's... And then little T -Rex arms couldn't
- 11:59get his hand up to get the ball. Brilliant. I
- 12:00loved it. So, yeah. But, I mean, England... I
- 12:03mean, look, Kane looks... He looks like a man
- 12:06on a mission. He's looking good. So they look
- 12:09good. But Spain, a little bit of a wobble. I
- 12:11mean, a huge shock. Probably the biggest shock
- 12:13so far. Cape Verde, the goalkeeper. What a story
- 12:15for him. I think they're flying his mum out now.
- 12:18I read somewhere. Again, who knows what's real
- 12:21and what's fake nowadays. But what a day for
- 12:25them. They obviously got a point there. Portugal
- 12:27looked awful. Ronaldo was a problem. I've said
- 12:31this before. Two years now, I'm like that. If
- 12:33he wants to win a World Cup with Portugal, he's
- 12:35got to be a squad player and he's got to come
- 12:37off. And come on in moments. Again, if you're
- 12:40chasing a goal and you throw an extra attacker,
- 12:43I think they can afford him in those moments,
- 12:45but they can't afford him. And he's not... You're
- 12:47playing with 10 if you're playing with him. Yeah.
- 12:50Well, the thing is, it affects Bruno Fernandes
- 12:53so much, I think. And they've got the boy, Gonzalo
- 12:55Ramos, who plays for PSG. He just has to start.
- 12:59He has to start. I think the bigger problem for
- 13:03Portugal is the centre -half. Diaz is out and
- 13:05they don't really have a lot of cover. I just
- 13:08don't see... And again, I go back to... I look
- 13:10at teams... You cannot win a World Cup without
- 13:12a good defence. That's what I always look at.
- 13:15I look at the teams that I think... I think Spain's
- 13:18defence is decent. I think France's defence is
- 13:20good. I think they could both. I think Argentina's
- 13:23defence is good again. Romero's a different player
- 13:25for them. They've also got good goalkeepers.
- 13:27You've got to look at the whole thing. I don't
- 13:30think England's good enough. I don't think Germany's
- 13:32defence is good enough. So yeah, we'll see what
- 13:35happens. But it's certainly been an interesting...
- 13:39Yeah, we're past the first round of fixtures
- 13:41now. Yes, we're in game week or match day two
- 13:44now. Match day two. Yeah. So, yes, big game Scotland
- 13:48-Morocco tonight. That's the big one. That will
- 13:50be... Good day in Australia. Australia keeping
- 13:52receipts. By the way, I was talking to my mate
- 13:56Murray at work. He's out in Sydney. I said this
- 13:59to him. I said, again, Australia always overperforms.
- 14:02I can't remember a World Cup where they haven't
- 14:04overperformed, but they always outperform expectation.
- 14:08I actually think that game against the States
- 14:09could be a brilliant game. It's going to be too
- 14:13physical. It's going to be a physical, physical
- 14:18battle. I think Australia win that. I genuinely
- 14:23mean, USA are favorites and they should be, but
- 14:25it wouldn't be a shock. Australia, they do. outperform
- 14:29at World Cups. There's a togetherness about them.
- 14:33And look, we'll see what happens. We'll see what
- 14:34happens. I think there's some great games now.
- 14:37And I think, you know, we're starting to get
- 14:38into like some of the games, you know, again,
- 14:39some of the teams you've been looking, there
- 14:41is a little bit of dilution and it's like, you
- 14:43know, you're going to see that at this World
- 14:44Cup. You're going to see way more goals because
- 14:46of the dilution of the, the difference, the gulf
- 14:49and quality between certain teams. So you are
- 14:51going to see these, like the Germany result,
- 14:52like Curacao. That's going to happen to teams
- 14:55a lot. Like Canada hanging six on a nine -man
- 14:58Qatar. Yeah, I mean, you're just going, you're
- 15:00Jonathan David. So honestly, as I said, the top
- 15:04goal scorer market is really tough because I
- 15:05said it. you're going to be, it's a group stages,
- 15:07but I think there's a lot of guys and you're
- 15:08seeing it. It was a lot of people now sitting
- 15:09in that market, which is quite good because often
- 15:12like sometimes like, you know, you get a striker
- 15:14like close, you score six in the first two games
- 15:16and you kind of knew he was going to win it.
- 15:18Whereas this actually makes it a bit of a thing.
- 15:20So you've got obviously Messi sitting in three
- 15:22goals. Jonathan David got a hat trick last night.
- 15:24You've got a host, you've got Haaland on too.
- 15:25You've got Mbappe on too. You've got Kane on
- 15:27too, right? And then you've got some other folks
- 15:29that are there as well. Luis Diaz got a goal
- 15:31for Colombia. So yeah, I think it's really interesting.
- 15:35interesting mark at that one you can still go
- 15:37and find value um and have a bit of fun um playing
- 15:40with that so um I know you wanted to talk a little
- 15:43bit about some of the the rule changes the big
- 15:45one I think look I think the throw -ins I think
- 15:47that all that's all seemed to work actually quite
- 15:49well although like players like Robertson he's
- 15:52clever he was like they realize it's when they
- 15:53pick the ball up so just take longer to pick
- 15:55the ball up um but um We did see a corner given
- 15:59for the team not taking a goal kick quickly enough,
- 16:01but it's more these hydration breaks that are
- 16:03just awful. It's horrendous. It's so bad, isn't
- 16:08it? And it's so unnecessary. Look, there are
- 16:09certain games where it's obvious you need to
- 16:11do it because it's like... A billion degrees
- 16:13up. Yes, correct. But in the Dallas Cowboys stadium
- 16:17that's got air conditioning... the roof's closed
- 16:20what are you doing guys like yes yeah the argument
- 16:24was it's we just need to do it for all of them
- 16:26so that it's fair for everybody and it's it's
- 16:29and it's fair for the advertisers so they get
- 16:31all the yeah well yeah yes world cup brought
- 16:34to you by commercials yes and so this is the
- 16:37thing like i can't cast my mind back far enough
- 16:40but when they did the world cup in brazil did
- 16:42they have as many drinks breaks during the games
- 16:44they might have i'm not entirely sure I don't
- 16:49think that they did it for every match. I think
- 16:53that's the big talking point of regardless of
- 16:56climate or whether you're undercover or not.
- 16:59Every match has them now, which I don't think
- 17:01was the case before. But the thing is, it's like
- 17:03this is what I find. Don't get me wrong. I find
- 17:07it interesting from a tactical perspective of
- 17:09like now you're effectively seeing a game where
- 17:12it's split into four quarters rather than two
- 17:14halves. And you're seeing the net. being that
- 17:18most of the better teams are predictably winning
- 17:21their games because they have a manager that
- 17:23is more adaptable. I'm surprised that Brazil
- 17:25didn't, but I can also see why, because the thing
- 17:27is that Ancelotti isn't really a tactics guy.
- 17:30He's more of a let me throw the best people for
- 17:32those roles on, and then they can kind of figure
- 17:35this out. But you saw it with Curaçao. Curaçao
- 17:38were actually doing pretty well against Germany.
- 17:40Yeah, they were down, but then they got absolutely
- 17:43tombed the second the drinks break happened.
- 17:46The momentum shifted completely. And it's just
- 17:50sad for teams that don't necessarily have the
- 17:53depth to be able to adapt to the changes as quickly
- 17:58as possible. That's the thing that's going to
- 18:01irritate me this World Cup, I'm certain. Yeah,
- 18:05it's interesting in one respect, but I think
- 18:07it's just a bit cruel in another. Yeah, I think
- 18:09it's... Do you know what it's for me? People
- 18:12talk about advantages. It just breaks the game
- 18:15up. Momentum is a huge thing in football. And
- 18:18it's just like a... It makes you realize how
- 18:21bad adding more breaks in at football is. The
- 18:24whole point is that it's the flow of the game.
- 18:26Again, the thing is that I know we've all been
- 18:29complaining about the ball not being in play
- 18:31enough, right? And that's just like interrupt.
- 18:33The people do that to interrupt the flow of the
- 18:35game. This is like, it's a micro example of it.
- 18:38And now we just introduced this man and they
- 18:40don't even stop the clock and it gets added.
- 18:42And I'm just like, yeah, you know, that added
- 18:44time is going to start at three minutes. Yeah.
- 18:46And, and it's just, but it's just that stupid,
- 18:48but also it's just the whole premise of it is
- 18:51just silly. It's like, look, if there's a situation
- 18:53where the temperature and it's, it will be clear
- 18:56that an extra drinks rate is required. The other
- 18:59thing I would say is also look, I'm not going
- 19:00to. again not to boo but guys they're professional
- 19:03athletes if that's my job like you're hydrated
- 19:06before like they take all the nutrition out so
- 19:08they are they are and it's it's 45 minutes guys
- 19:10right you're not gonna like i'm i am sorry like
- 19:13there's a little bit of like my tiny via limby
- 19:15now i'm like guys i don't really think it's even
- 19:17necessary at all honestly um i really don't because
- 19:20look this if it goes out for a corner you can
- 19:22just somebody can chuck on a water bottle that
- 19:24happens all the time the goalies water bottle
- 19:25take a quick drink like you know Again, look,
- 19:29if they're just doing it because they're trying
- 19:30to get, let's just tell it's an advertisement
- 19:33thing. It is FIFA and advertising. Let's just
- 19:38stop this whole player welfare and all this nonsense.
- 19:40I'm like, guys, look, you have got one of the
- 19:43best jobs in the world. It's a privilege to do
- 19:45what you do. You're professional athletes. You
- 19:49know what the temperature is going to be. You
- 19:50take on hydration. Like, you know, I played in
- 19:51extreme heat before. I mean, it's not difficult.
- 19:56Like, I mean, it's stupid. It's so stupid. But
- 19:59the thing is, you literally have a football league
- 20:02in Mexico and Brazil and literally everywhere
- 20:05else. And what do they do to counter this? They
- 20:07don't have drinks breaks. They just change the
- 20:09tactics. They don't have to play like gung -ho,
- 20:12British Premier League, constant non -stop pressing
- 20:15football. Yeah, you're right. It's like when
- 20:18the pitch is frosty or icy or it's a waterlogged
- 20:21pitch that you can't play the ball on the deck.
- 20:23The ball's not. You need to adapt to the conditions.
- 20:26Look, if it's hot, yeah, you might not be able
- 20:28to get as humid. You're not going to have maybe
- 20:29as much running in you. It is what it is. I just
- 20:32hate the whole player welfare nonsense. Let's
- 20:36just stop being silly. I'd rather them increase
- 20:37the number of subs that they do. I'd rather them
- 20:40increase the number of subs that they do and
- 20:42do it at halftime so you can be like, right,
- 20:43for 45 minutes. you lot are going to go out and
- 20:46get completely gassed and then we're going to
- 20:48take you off. So you can just recover and it's
- 20:50okay. They're not playing in Pakistan. It's not
- 20:5444 degree heat. Like it is still manageable.
- 20:57Stop it. Grow up. Just put us in charge of guys,
- 21:00right? Just put me, how many good ideas have
- 21:02we had this? Like we just have better ideas.
- 21:03Like just, just hit us up, like let us know.
- 21:05Right. But the only thing, the only reason that
- 21:07I wanted to mention it is also because like,
- 21:08I swear, like. What I just really, really hope
- 21:12isn't a lesson that comes out of this World Cup
- 21:14is that for the Premier League, they go, you
- 21:16know what? Let's install drinks breaks because
- 21:19sometimes they look at World Cups and think,
- 21:21oh, this really worked quite well. Like added
- 21:24time four years ago. Exactly. Like I want them
- 21:26to not. look at this as like, oh, this is really
- 21:29good. I want them to look at the game rather
- 21:32than the revenue because this is obviously fantastic
- 21:34for the revenue because they're going to get
- 21:36ad breaks. Almost the biggest travesty is that
- 21:39we don't get to see an ad break for a mole cream
- 21:42on the lower left side of your back that will
- 21:44make you shit blood for weeks. At least give
- 21:48us that. Let us enjoy it. But I just really don't
- 21:51want us to adopt this in the Premier League or
- 21:53else that's going to kill the game. You know
- 21:57what else will kill the game? It's bringing Alexi
- 21:59Lalas to everybody. Oh, my God. That's the best
- 22:04performance I've ever seen by a sports team ever,
- 22:06ever. Oh, my God. It was amazing. They were like,
- 22:10you just saw Zlatan. I just like hats off to
- 22:13Zlatan and Thierry Henry for just dressing him
- 22:18down every time he opens his mouth because he
- 22:21is the biggest tosser on the planet. He's just
- 22:24a dildo. He's just a dildo. Like just an absolute
- 22:27dildo. I'm not a, yeah, but look, I mean, look,
- 22:30it does, it does create conversation. Like you
- 22:32say, that's, that's, it'll be something for Fox.
- 22:35Yeah. A hundred percent, a hundred percent clickbait.
- 22:39Okay. Well, what I want to do is I want to talk
- 22:40a little bit. Look, we've had, we've seen every
- 22:42team once or maybe highlights and stuff like
- 22:44that. So like, yeah, we talked before, like any,
- 22:47obviously I'm, you know, I, I'm still not. high
- 22:50on Germany even though they beat Curaçao 7 -1
- 22:52it's not really a big achievement so I've not
- 22:56for example I've not changed my opinion there
- 22:58but maybe I would have maybe I so is there anything
- 23:00you've seen now where you go thinking about what
- 23:02you thought before the tournament in terms of
- 23:03the teams where you look at going hmm actually
- 23:06that team look better than I thought or I thought
- 23:10that team might be good but they're not actually
- 23:12like Portugal for one for me A lot of people
- 23:15were quite high on them. And I think now it's
- 23:17been quite sobering in that. It's one game, right?
- 23:20Argentina lost their first game, won the World
- 23:21Cup last time out. So let's not forget that.
- 23:24But we like to overreact. So what's been your
- 23:27hot takes from round one of the fixtures so far
- 23:30in terms of the teams to watch and the ones maybe
- 23:32you think might let everyone down? I don't think
- 23:40England get... They'll get out of the groups,
- 23:43but I don't think they'll go beyond that. You
- 23:47think they get an early knockout exit? Okay,
- 23:49that's a hot take. I like that. So the thing
- 23:51is, don't get me wrong, I like the fact that
- 23:53they actually scored goals and they didn't Gareth
- 23:55Southgate 1 -0 the life out of that game against
- 23:57Croatia, because usually Croatia's a bit of a
- 23:59bogey team for them. They usually sit back, they
- 24:02let moderates tire themselves out. Great. Boring.
- 24:06But they are also very defensively frail. Like
- 24:10they are not a defensive powerhouse. So I see
- 24:13them conceding a fair bit and I don't know if
- 24:16their attack will compensate. Okay. I like that.
- 24:20I honestly don't disagree with that at all. I
- 24:23think that's a really good take. Mike, what do
- 24:26you, have you got any hot takes on this? I don't
- 24:29know if it's a hot take, but just a pleasant
- 24:31surprise with the first U .S. result. So just
- 24:35the way that that all played out and scoring
- 24:38the four goals was huge for that team. A little
- 24:42bit of a concern with the Pulisic injury, and
- 24:47hopefully he's going to be all right. But, you
- 24:50know, big game this afternoon against Australia,
- 24:52but just... The way they showed up was, you know,
- 24:56I said that they were underwhelming a week ago,
- 24:59and that would, you know, the way they showed
- 25:02up was not necessarily underwhelming. So well
- 25:04done to the U .S. squad for what they did. And,
- 25:08you know, the fact that Norway is on goal differential
- 25:13sitting on top of that group, I'm just going
- 25:16to say it. You said that they wouldn't get out
- 25:19of the group. I don't know that that's the case.
- 25:21I think they would. I said they would. No, no,
- 25:24no. Roscoe, yeah. And they've done nothing to
- 25:28change my mind. They were not great in that game.
- 25:31They weren't great in that game. They weren't
- 25:34great. I'm pleasantly surprised by Canada. Yeah,
- 25:39yeah. On the US, Mike, I remember it was the
- 25:44last time I saw them. At the last tournament,
- 25:48I was like, well, they're a young team, I thought.
- 25:49I was like, they could be scary in four years.
- 25:53That didn't seem to materialize. Well, and they're
- 25:56young in places. Like, our captain is 100. I
- 26:00know he is, yeah, he's always injured. But no,
- 26:02but I think with Paul, I did read an article,
- 26:04he was talking about, like, the... You've talked
- 26:06about the fact that in the US system, there's
- 26:08no relegation. There's all these mindset things.
- 26:12And he was like, it's taken so long to just almost
- 26:15bleed this out of people. So you do wonder that
- 26:19maybe this could be the start of something for
- 26:21this US team in terms of look. Because they should
- 26:23look. I think the challenge they have, the MLS
- 26:25is not a good caliber league. That's the biggest
- 26:27challenge they have. But the thing is, if you
- 26:29look at that team, very few of them play in the
- 26:31MLS. They're all playing internationally. When
- 26:34you look at how Germany built their teams over
- 26:37the years, right. And saying, no, well, you're
- 26:38going to live in this play in this country and
- 26:40we're going to, you know, build from within.
- 26:42And that clearly worked for a while. So they
- 26:45don't get as much time together because they're
- 26:47scattered all over the world, but you know, they're
- 26:49not playing in the MLS to develop. But even becoming
- 26:53an American, like a professional footballer in
- 26:55America is just too expensive. Like you basically
- 26:57have to buy your way into an academy. And the
- 27:00fact that you can't even get to these academies
- 27:03very easily in a lot of these cities, it's just
- 27:05you're basically any professional American, like
- 27:08anyone who's playing football for the United
- 27:10States likely has to come from a wealthy background,
- 27:13which means that your pool is very limited. Yeah.
- 27:17So I just don't see, until they start breaking
- 27:21that down and then effectively do an academy
- 27:23system like England doesn't really establish
- 27:25it, I just don't see them being able to actually
- 27:27compete properly. We will see. So my kind of
- 27:33take so far are, I'll stick my assertion, Norway
- 27:37will lose to Senegal and France and will struggle
- 27:40to get the group. I mean, they might scrape out
- 27:42third place. We'll see. I don't think three points,
- 27:45it might not be enough. But they scored four
- 27:47goals against Iraq, which gives them a chance.
- 27:49Although I thought they were quite poor against
- 27:51Iraq, actually. That game was more even than
- 27:53I thought it would be. So I still think they've
- 27:55got no hope of doing anything meaningful in the
- 27:58tournament. So it's not changed on that. Senegal,
- 28:03the team that I... Because I was flip -flopping
- 28:06between them and Morocco. I was like, I know
- 28:07they're both the AFCON finalists and it was a
- 28:09bit of a chaotic final and that's still at some
- 28:12court somewhere. But I think Senegal, I really
- 28:16do think they're like, again, they went against
- 28:18France and like you said, they could have been,
- 28:20I know France, you can argue, didn't play great,
- 28:22but they were, that was a very competitive and
- 28:25they made life really difficult. They worked
- 28:27their socks off. I think also I look at teams
- 28:29that can deal with conditions in terms of heat.
- 28:32I think there's just little advantages if you
- 28:35look at history, like it's not that easy to come
- 28:37over to the Americas and win. It isn't easy.
- 28:41I know Spain have done it, but it's not easy.
- 28:43So I do think Senegal will be, and look, it's
- 28:46a really tough group, right? Obviously they lost
- 28:48to France. They're going to have to beat Norway,
- 28:51right? But I do think they're better than Norway.
- 28:53Obviously Norway have, you know, some high caliber
- 28:57players that could, you know, but I think Senegal
- 28:59are a better team. So I do think that they've
- 29:01been a nice, pleasant, you know, a pleasant surprise,
- 29:04I think. Teams that I'm, again, that I'm a little
- 29:07bit, I would say. I think you mentioned England.
- 29:10Yeah, I did think, I thought Holland might be
- 29:13a bit better than they were. Again, it's game
- 29:14one because their form was good coming in. So,
- 29:17in Spain, the obvious ones. But see, to be honest,
- 29:20I actually think, like, Brazil looked awful.
- 29:27I thought Brazil, and the selection of playing
- 29:31Lucas Paquita and Casemiro, I couldn't believe,
- 29:33I had to look twice and seeing what they had
- 29:36on the bench, I was like, Like, you know, look,
- 29:38Casemiro's had a good season at Man United, but
- 29:40he's like, that Morocco team or this team, almost
- 29:44like they're in their prime a lot. They've just
- 29:47got a lot of players. They're very athletic.
- 29:52Lucas Pakata is a luxury player. I don't think
- 29:54he's been particularly good. I think I was so
- 29:57surprised that he played them, but I wasn't shocked
- 30:00because you look at, I mean, like Marquinhos
- 30:01and Gabriel, you go, wow, that should be like.
- 30:04But they just got the goal. They got completely...
- 30:07It was like schoolboy stuff. It was really poor.
- 30:11I just think Brazil, as much as Scotland... With
- 30:14Morocco, we haven't been lucky in terms of...
- 30:16That's probably as bad a draw as you could get
- 30:18for a pot two team. But I would certainly say
- 30:21for pot one, Brazil or not... like a top tier
- 30:25pot one team. Now look, again, they've got Vinicius
- 30:27Junior, you saw what he did. So obviously they
- 30:29have these players that will have, like it's,
- 30:30Igor Thiago was, looked like he couldn't kick
- 30:33a football. He was awful against Morocco. Right.
- 30:36He was so bad. The right back boy was awful.
- 30:39I don't know who he is. Like, I just looking
- 30:41at it going, and they just, there was, there's
- 30:42a lack of cohesivity. You can see it when you
- 30:44know, when you see it, you go, they're a team
- 30:46that is not like, Bruno Guimaraes is a really,
- 30:48really good player, right? They've got some really
- 30:50good, but there's not a togetherness there. which
- 30:53I do think Neymar could be a factor in that.
- 30:55I think he does have that. He loves playing for
- 30:57Brazil. He's got that kind of, you know, certain
- 30:59players, just it means more. I wonder, so I'm
- 31:02kind of hoping he doesn't play in the group stages,
- 31:03but it'll be interesting to see how they do against
- 31:06Haiti, because you'd expect Brazil should go
- 31:08and put Hang 3, 4, 5 on Haiti, right? It'll be
- 31:11interesting. I'll be watching that game as well,
- 31:14because obviously for reasons, obvious reasons,
- 31:16because Scotland play Brazil and Miami next week.
- 31:18But they're... I've said this and people are
- 31:22saying it's Brazil, we're going to get pumped.
- 31:23I said, I don't think Brazil are that good. They're
- 31:25not Brazil of old. I actually think they're worse
- 31:27than I realized. They are. I mean, Morocco were,
- 31:31I mean, the second half, look, to your point,
- 31:34Angelo is obviously like, in terms of experience,
- 31:37he kind of, you know, managed the game through
- 31:40that and he tweaked things and he made, you know,
- 31:41but I mean, they were so open. Morocco, they
- 31:44could just play through them at will. I'm, yeah,
- 31:47I think, and I said this before the tournament,
- 31:49I was like, why are Brazil the same odds or sometimes
- 31:50shorter than Argentina? I was like, why? It doesn't
- 31:53make any sense to me. Like, you know, I just
- 31:55think Argentina are like a level above them at
- 31:58the moment, at this point in time, right? So,
- 32:01yeah, I think Brazil, and maybe this is part
- 32:03of me just being optimistic, I'm hoping this
- 32:05comes true because obviously it's good for Scotland
- 32:07if that is the fact. You know, so they're the
- 32:10ones that I think people might have put bets
- 32:12on and had high hopes for because of the Ancelotti
- 32:14factor. I'm going, you know again you look on
- 32:17paper and go they could be scary but you watch
- 32:19them play and you're like this is this is the
- 32:22thing about a bunch of individuals right compared
- 32:24to a cohesive unit and they've always like i
- 32:28mean look how many you know world cups have won
- 32:30but still there's always been one or two flashy
- 32:35players on that team and it's just like can those
- 32:38one or two flashy players bring the rest of the
- 32:40group together or not and i don't think with
- 32:43this set that that's the case i agree You've
- 32:46got Rafinha and Vinicius and you're going, you're
- 32:50thinking, Jesus, that's scary. But it just, it
- 32:52just doesn't. Yeah. The centre midfield is a
- 32:55huge problem. It's a huge problem. The problem
- 32:58is, the problem is I just don't think that Ancelotti
- 33:01is an international football manager. Right.
- 33:04I just, I just don't think that he's like in
- 33:06the sense of like, he is, he's usually what you
- 33:10want from an international football manager is
- 33:12someone that goes into a team and basically understands.
- 33:15I'm not going to get these players for more than
- 33:17three, four times a year. I've got to figure
- 33:19out what works and try and apply some level of
- 33:22structure. But the problem is that Ancelotti
- 33:25is the antithesis of structure. I'm not saying
- 33:27that he has no tactics, but what I am saying
- 33:29is that he tries to not put any structure on
- 33:32his teams. That's how his Real Madrid side did
- 33:36so well, because he let them just be as creative
- 33:38as possible and put the best people on the team
- 33:39for the right moments. You can't do that in international
- 33:44football. You just don't get the reps in with
- 33:46that team to be able to manage it. So I don't
- 33:50know. I think Brazil will limp out of the group
- 33:53stages, but I don't see them getting much further
- 33:55because fundamentally, even England could beat
- 33:58them. And that's saying something. Yeah. Well,
- 34:01I just want to make a mention of a couple of
- 34:04other teams. We obviously have Ecuador were well
- 34:09-fancied before the tournament. Not a good start
- 34:11for them. I thought that was interesting that
- 34:17a lot of people tipped them. They do have Curaçao,
- 34:19so you would expect them to get going in that
- 34:21game. What was Sweden? I did want to bring them
- 34:26up because obviously they are still fine. We
- 34:28know this. Mexico, the other team that I wanted
- 34:30to bring up. I said Mexico have an advantage
- 34:33with a good result against South Korea. That
- 34:35was last night, 1 -0. They're qualified, the
- 34:37first team to get through. Your host nation,
- 34:39the Aztec, maybe one of the most iconic stadiums
- 34:42in world football. So, yes, I want to talk about
- 34:46Mexico and I want to talk a little bit about
- 34:47Sweden because Sweden, Isak looked... like the
- 34:51player Liverpool expected they were getting,
- 34:52you're like, holy shit, that's the guy we thought
- 34:54we signed. Obviously, Jock got involved among
- 34:57the goals and assists as well. So there isn't,
- 34:59and again, the Swedes, historically, I remember
- 35:02my dad, this is an absolutely true story. So
- 35:05I remember we saw Henrik Larsson play the World
- 35:07Cup. He was very young. And my dad called him
- 35:09Daisy Larsson. He nicknamed him Daisy Larsson.
- 35:11I can't remember why. He had the long dreadlocks,
- 35:13right? And my dad was like, he's a good player.
- 35:15This was before he even went to Celtic or anything.
- 35:17And it turned out he was right. But I wonder,
- 35:19like, Thomas Brolin, those were like, but they
- 35:21had, they always had like these. They always
- 35:22had two or three really good players, but there
- 35:24was, again, cohesiveness about Sweden as a nation
- 35:28that seems, again, I think Australia is the same.
- 35:31I think these teams that are just like, there
- 35:32is that meaning behind it for them, right? That
- 35:35I think don't bring them together. So I just
- 35:38want to know what you think about those two teams.
- 35:39Mexico maybe haven't been flashy good. They've
- 35:42kind of ground the results out, but I think that's
- 35:44two clean sheets they've had, is that right?
- 35:46Yes, two clean sheets. Two clean, so yeah, they
- 35:49haven't conceded a goal yet. You know, I mean,
- 35:52hard to beat in the Aztec. I mean, that environment
- 35:55is just insane. So good. So good. My mate Ben
- 36:02said yesterday, he's like, see if Scotland get
- 36:04through and get drawn at that stadium. He's like,
- 36:06he's just going to sell his house and go. Just
- 36:09to experience it. Yeah. It is absolutely electric.
- 36:14There's nothing like a state of the art. But
- 36:17do you think Mexico or Sweden could be dark horses?
- 36:19Because I think they're ones that people don't
- 36:21really take, but could they be dark horses? Have
- 36:23we seen enough? I'm leaning, I think Sweden could
- 36:26be. I'm less bullish on Mexico based on what
- 36:31I've seen so far. I would completely agree with
- 36:33that. I'm not as convinced by Mexico. I feel
- 36:35like they don't, you know, you have teams which
- 36:39are, pretty medium, but they are either top -heavy
- 36:42or back -heavy or mid -heavy, right? What even
- 36:45is Mexico at this point in time? Are they midfield
- 36:49-heavy? Are they defence -heavy? I'm not really
- 36:51sure. I think they're kind of just very middling
- 36:53across the park. Don't get me wrong, they have
- 36:55the synergy, but at least with Sweden, they have
- 36:58Jokers, they have Isak, they have players in
- 37:02positions which are meaningful and are performing
- 37:04well in our superstar level. When Raul Jimenez
- 37:07is your guiding light, that's not a good sign.
- 37:14Yeah. Yeah. What do we think? Mike, do you think
- 37:17Sweden's a bit, I mean, they're in a group with
- 37:19Holland and Japan. I mean, that should be like
- 37:21a crazy group of death for them, but just the
- 37:24way the first set of results played out. Well,
- 37:28it puts a huge amount of pressure on, on Holland
- 37:30to beat them. Yes. But the thing is, do you think
- 37:34it was just a case of, look, they just have a
- 37:36really potent front two, which they do. Isak
- 37:38and Georg are good players against a team like
- 37:40Tunisia. So do you think it might be a bit of
- 37:43a red herring with Sweden? I think you need to
- 37:45see another result to kind of see it play out.
- 37:48And, you know, just the way, you know, we talked
- 37:51about Japan already, right, and how solid they
- 37:54are. And so I think you need to see another result
- 37:57before you can make a call. They got the softball
- 38:00early. Yeah, and do you know what? The more you
- 38:02say that, I actually think you might be right.
- 38:04Now I rethink it. Mexico are definitely more
- 38:07likely because they've got the home advantage.
- 38:10Yes. I think clean sheets, as I mentioned before,
- 38:13is important, right? And yet might not be. And
- 38:16I always say the same thing, Lachie, that sometimes
- 38:18the biggest worry, if your team is brilliant
- 38:19at the group stages, it's very, very rarely I
- 38:22can remember a team just being brilliant. There's
- 38:24a team that... Yeah, usually you figure it out
- 38:26in like... Yeah, they figure it out. And then
- 38:28you make the pivot. Yeah. So, but I think Mexico
- 38:31could go, because again, I think that home advantage
- 38:33is going to be huge. And I think you're right.
- 38:35You cannot downplay that. That is... It is just
- 38:38immense. It's like game over. I think Sweden
- 39:10is... Sorry, I just think the Netherlands are
- 39:13just a massive mental game. They have the squad
- 39:16to be able to get to the quarterfinals, the semifinals.
- 39:20They do not have the mentality for it. They are
- 39:24some anger their way to the quarters. I just
- 39:27don't think they're doing it. I think Sweden
- 39:29generally beat them 2 -0. I really don't see
- 39:32why they shouldn't. Look, it's going to be...
- 39:37The good news was that's a Saturday 6 o 'clock
- 39:40game. That's actually a nice time. Pretty good
- 39:46time on Saturday for us at 6pm. That's much kinder.
- 39:50That's a good game to look forward to. I'm just
- 39:52checking the Sunday slate as well to see what
- 39:54we've got. Belgium, Iran. Disgusting. Spain,
- 39:57Saudi Arabia. I think actually Belgium, Iran.
- 40:00Based on how Iran were playing. Iran, I swear
- 40:03to God. Out of all the teams I've seen played
- 40:05so far, Iran play with probably some of the most
- 40:09intensity. They do, but I just think those games
- 40:12are just all quite crap. I don't know. It's not
- 40:16crap when you see a massive upset. No, you're
- 40:20right. There could be some. None of the fixtures
- 40:22really. Like Norway, Senegal. yes want to watch
- 40:24that game that'll be a good game i go that'll
- 40:26be a good that'll be a good game of football
- 40:28that's the next one i can see like portugal uzbekistan
- 40:31no thanks england ghana england ghana sure i
- 40:35don't think england win that i think that's pretty
- 40:38good there's at least a bit of genuine jeopardy
- 40:40for england that's i mean you you know um so
- 40:43yeah i mean i think that's that's my only issue
- 40:44i do think there's just so many games on paper
- 40:46at this work i look at i'm just like Like, you
- 40:49know what I mean? Like, let's say the US -Australia
- 40:51game, I actually, I think they're well -matched.
- 40:54Today and tomorrow's slates have got some exciting
- 40:56stuff. Exactly. They're well -matched. Teams
- 40:59you go, it's not easy to call that game. That's
- 41:03what I'm looking for. And I think the US, again,
- 41:05you know, obviously Morocco are pretty heavy
- 41:07favorites, but again, Scotland have got enough
- 41:09quality to trouble us. That's a home game for
- 41:10Scotland. Are you kidding me? Dude, I got this
- 41:13picture. You sent it, Mike, right? You said that
- 41:17instead of New England, it's New Scotland. Yeah,
- 41:20yeah. I loved that. It was so good. That place
- 41:26will be rocking for Scotland. It's going to be
- 41:31absolutely wild. I'm so excited for tonight.
- 41:34The countdown is at 3 o 'clock now, so eight
- 41:36hours to kick off. I think they know they need
- 41:40to win this, even if it's like a really awful
- 41:431 -0 win. Who cares? That's all it takes. We'll
- 41:46take a nil. Honestly, like... Again, knockout
- 41:52football is very different. And it is. And the
- 41:54weird thing is that we can get out of the group.
- 41:57I think in knockout football, we can be dangerous.
- 42:00Remember Wales did it. We can just be a dangerous
- 42:03team because we do have a bit of quality. So
- 42:06I would love just to be in that knockout phase.
- 42:10Even regardless who you get, you go, right, we've
- 42:11got a gate. It would just be... it would be immense.
- 42:14And I think, you know, the team deserve it. They've
- 42:16done, yeah, they've done really well to get this
- 42:19far and do what they've done so far. And look,
- 42:22I just hope for the tournament, mate, for the
- 42:23good of the tournament. You want Scotland in,
- 42:25you want the Scotland fans. You know what happens,
- 42:27Mike? I said this, what Trump will do, right,
- 42:30he'll pay all the referees and go, look, just
- 42:31let Scotland win every game. And we're just going
- 42:34to send them on a tour of the US. And at the
- 42:36end of this, the US economy will just be an all
- 42:39-time high. And he'll look fantastic. But yeah,
- 42:42we never sold more alcohol ever in all these
- 42:46places that we're struggling. And I'm going,
- 42:47yeah, we've made record profits. Everyone will
- 42:50be happier, right? They'll be like, this is great.
- 42:52And that'll be his re -election campaign. I'm
- 42:55sure that's exactly what's going to happen. Because
- 42:57there's such a love affair between Trump and
- 42:59Scotland. He does. He loves Scotland. He loves
- 43:03Scotland. And Scotland hates him. Yeah, no, no,
- 43:06exactly. We're not a fan of his. But my point
- 43:08is... we bring happiness to people out there.
- 43:11So I'm like, yeah, look, I'm happy for that to
- 43:13happen. We'll take the World Cup home. We'll
- 43:15win it. Lovely stuff. Let's go for it. But look,
- 43:18we'll see what happens. I'm so excited for tonight.
- 43:22Yeah, let's hope that excitement is not short
- 43:24-lived because, you know, sometimes that does
- 43:26happen. But yeah, hopefully, we've just got to
- 43:29start strong tonight. We can't get on the back
- 43:34foot early. There'll be moments we'll have to
- 43:36suffer, but if we just set up and just... concede
- 43:39ground immediately, I think we'll be in all sorts
- 43:42of trouble. I want to ask a question to the team.
- 43:47Who is going to be the first surprising team
- 43:49going home? Surprising team going home? Okay.
- 43:58I would say... That's a good question. Let me
- 44:04just... I think I'm going to go with your England
- 44:08pick, Waza. Okay. I'm going to go Brazil. Wow.
- 44:15I know. I know. I'm looking. I'm going – because,
- 44:18look, to be – I mean, I could say Belgium. I
- 44:21mean, their group, New Zealand, Iran, Egypt.
- 44:24I just think Belgium are crap. So I don't think
- 44:27it's that shocking, if that makes sense. I feel
- 44:29that would be a cop -out for me because I think
- 44:31they're crap. I think Spain will be okay. Argentina
- 44:35are fine. Colombia, yeah. Why do you think Spain
- 44:38will be okay? Spain will be okay because they've
- 44:40got too much quality. It's more like they can
- 44:43just, they could literally almost change their
- 44:45whole team if they wanted to and still be really
- 44:47good. And they're in a group. I mean, they're
- 44:48in, who's their group? Let me have a look at
- 44:50Spain's group. Yeah, Saudi Arabia, Uruguay, Cape
- 44:53Verde. I mean, to me, they'll beat Saudi Arabia.
- 44:56Spain will up their level. They'll get through
- 44:59it. They won't really care who they get. So yeah,
- 45:02Spain I think will be fine. But again, you do
- 45:04look at a team that maybe does end up finishing
- 45:06second or third that maybe shouldn't have. That
- 45:09could get you an early exit as well. But I just
- 45:11think based on what I think, people would not
- 45:13predict Brazil. I think Brazil will get out of
- 45:16the group. They'll beat Haiti. I think they will.
- 45:18So they'll get out of the group and four points
- 45:20will be enough. I just think that they... Again,
- 45:24they could get lucky with the draw, but I think
- 45:25if they get a team that's remotely good, I think
- 45:27they're in all sorts of trouble. So, yeah, I'll
- 45:30go Brazil. What about you, Waza? Portugal. I
- 45:34just don't see it. I just don't see it. I think
- 45:37Roberto Martinez has lived to form. He has done
- 45:42exactly what we thought he would, which is play
- 45:44Ronaldo and suffer. Yeah. They've got DR Congo,
- 45:48Dr Congo. That's what my son calls them. Dr Congo.
- 45:50I love it. Uzbekistan. They will not beat Colombia,
- 45:54I don't think. No, that's the thing. They might
- 45:56beat Uzbekistan. Yeah, they will. They should
- 45:59get through, but they should. I think you're
- 46:01right. They could be in trouble. They could be
- 46:02in trouble. Because the thing is, fundamentally,
- 46:04if DR Congo beat Uzbekistan better... then they're
- 46:09in trouble then, because it'll be Colombia that
- 46:12will go through, almost definitely. I think Portugal
- 46:16could go out on something like goal difference.
- 46:18Okay, wow. Okay, there we go. Hot takes. Well,
- 46:21listen, boys, it was always great to chat. Looking
- 46:24forward to the games. One thing is we pivot just
- 46:27really quickly. Yeah, of course we're coming.
- 46:29The fixtures have dropped. for the Premier League.
- 46:32Oh, sorry, yes, sorry, yes, of course. So the
- 46:34fixtures have dropped. Apparently Man United's
- 46:36first six is the easiest first six fixtures.
- 46:38That's what I read this morning. I haven't even
- 46:41looked at Liverpool because I'm just in World
- 46:42Cup mode. But yeah, are there any juicy firsts?
- 46:46Well, so, you know, of course, just like we did
- 46:49with, I think it was Brentford when they were
- 46:52promoted. We've got a promoted side to start.
- 46:55So banana skin right away. Coventry? Yeah, against
- 46:59Coventry. It's at home. Coventry gets smacked.
- 47:02It should be fine. Who do we have first game?
- 47:06You have Newcastle and away. And City have Bournemouth
- 47:12at home for the opener. Yuck. Newcastle away.
- 47:15That's disgusting. Yuck. Okay. Well, there you
- 47:18go. Premier League fixtures there. Check it.
- 47:19Liverpool did sign. There's some signing news
- 47:21as well. We're a little busy in the travel market.
- 47:25We'll maybe try and pepper some of that in if
- 47:27these group games get a bit boring. But yes,
- 47:31we will see. But listen, thanks to everyone for
- 47:33listening. Enjoy the game. I hope everyone should
- 47:36be cheering on Scotland. Unless you're Moroccan,
- 47:38of course, then you should cheer your own team
- 47:40on. Just because of, yeah, the good vibes we
- 47:43bring into the tournament. So let's see what
- 47:45happens tonight. And we will see you all next
- 47:47time. Cheers. Cheers.
