- 0:00Acts Chapter 7 The high priest said, Are these things so?
- 0:05And he said, Hear me, brethren and fathers, the God of glory
- 0:08appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia,
- 0:11before he lived in Heron. And he said to him, Leave your
- 0:14country and your relatives, and come into the land, that I will
- 0:17show you. Then he left the land of the
- 0:19Chaldeans and settled in Heron. From there, after his father
- 0:22died, God made him move to this country in which you are now
- 0:25living. But he gave him no inheritance
- 0:27in it, not even a foot of ground.
- 0:29And yet, even when he had no child, he promised that he would
- 0:32give it to him as a possession and to his descendants after
- 0:35him. But God spoke to this effect,
- 0:38that his descendants would be aliens in a foreign land, and
- 0:41that they would be enslaved and mistreated for 400 years.
- 0:44And whatever nation to which they will be in bondage, I
- 0:47myself will judge, said God. And after that they will come
- 0:50out and serve me in this place. And he gave him the covenant of
- 0:53circumcision. And so Abraham became the father
- 0:56of Isaac, and circumcised him on the 8th day.
- 0:59And Isaac became the father of Jacob and Jacob of the 12
- 1:02patriarchs. The patriarchs became jealous of
- 1:05Joseph and sold him into Egypt. Yet God was with him and rescued
- 1:09him from all his afflictions, and granted him favour and
- 1:11wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
- 1:13And he made him governor over Egypt and all his household.
- 1:16Now a famine came over all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction
- 1:20with it, and our fathers could find no food.
- 1:23But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our
- 1:25fathers there the first time. On the second visit Joseph made
- 1:29himself known to his brothers, and Joseph's family was
- 1:32disclosed to Pharaoh. Then Joseph sent word and
- 1:34invited Jacob, his father, and all his relatives to come to
- 1:37him, 75 persons in all. And Jacob went down to Egypt,
- 1:41and there he and our fathers died.
- 1:44From there they were removed to Shechem and laid in the tomb
- 1:46which Abraham had purchased for a sum of money from the sons of
- 1:49Hamor in Shechem. But as the time of the promise
- 1:52was approaching, which God had assured to Abraham, the people
- 1:55increased and multiplied in Egypt, until there arose another
- 1:59king over Egypt who knew nothing about Joseph.
- 2:02It was he who took shrewd advantage of our race and
- 2:04mistreated our father so that they would expose their infants
- 2:07and they would not survive. It was at this time that Moses
- 2:10was born and he was lovely in the sight of God, and he was
- 2:13nurtured 3 months in his father's home, and after he had
- 2:16been set outside, Pharaoh's daughter took him away and
- 2:19nurtured him as her own son. Moses was educated in all the
- 2:22learning of the Egyptians, and he was a man of power in words
- 2:25and deeds. When he was approaching the age
- 2:28of 40, it entered his mind to visit his brethren, the sons of
- 2:31Israel. When he saw one of them being
- 2:33treated unjustly, he defended him and took vengeance for the
- 2:36oppressed by striking down the Egyptian, and he supposed that
- 2:40his brethren understood that God was granting them deliverance
- 2:42through him, but they did not understand.
- 2:45On the following day he appeared to them as they were fighting
- 2:47together, and he tried to reconcile them in peace, saying,
- 2:50Men you are brethren, why do you injure one another?
- 2:53But the one who was injuring his neighbor pushed him away,
- 2:56saying, Who made you a ruler and judge over us?
- 2:58You do not mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian
- 3:00yesterday, do you? At this remark Moses fled and
- 3:04became an alien in the land of Midian, where he became the
- 3:07father of two sons. After 40 years had passed, an
- 3:10Angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai in the
- 3:13flame of a burning thorn Bush. When Moses saw it, he marvelled
- 3:16at the sight, and as he approached to look more closely,
- 3:19there came the voice of the Lord.
- 3:21I am the God of your Father's, the God of Abraham and Isaac and
- 3:25Jacob. Moses shook with fear and would
- 3:27not venture to look, but the Lord said to him, Take off the
- 3:30sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing
- 3:33is holy ground. I have certainly seen the
- 3:35oppression of my people in Egypt and have heard their groans, and
- 3:39I have come down to rescue them. Come now, and I will send you to
- 3:42Egypt. This Moses whom they disowned,
- 3:44saying, Who made you a ruler and a judge, is the one whom God
- 3:47sent to be both a ruler and a deliverer.
- 3:50With the help of the Angel who appeared to him in the thorn
- 3:52Bush, this man LED them out performing wonders and signs in
- 3:55the land of Egypt and in the Red Sea and in the wilderness for 40
- 3:58years. This is the Moses who said to
- 4:01the sons of Israel, God will raise up for you a prophet like
- 4:04me from your brethren. This is the one who was in the
- 4:06congregation in the wilderness, together with the Angel who was
- 4:09speaking to him on Mount Sinai, and who was with our fathers,
- 4:13and he received living oracles to pass on to you.
- 4:16Our fathers were unwilling to be obedient to him, but repudiated
- 4:19him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt, saying to Aaron,
- 4:23Make for us gods who will go before us.
- 4:25For this Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt.
- 4:27We do not know what happened to him at that time.
- 4:30They made a calf and brought a sacrifice to the idol and were
- 4:33rejoicing in the works of their hands, but God turned away and
- 4:36delivered them up to serve the host of heaven, as it is written
- 4:40in the book of the prophets. It was not to me that you
- 4:42offered victims and sacrifices. 40 years in the wilderness was
- 4:46it, O House of Israel, You also took along the Tabernacle of
- 4:49Moloch and the star of the God Ramfa the images which you made
- 4:53to worship. I will also remove you beyond
- 4:55Babylon. Our fathers had the Tabernacle
- 4:58of testimony in the wilderness, just as he who spoke to Moses
- 5:02directed him to make it according to the pattern which
- 5:04he had seen. And having received it in their
- 5:06turn, our fathers brought it in with Joshua.
- 5:08Upon dispossessing the nations whom God drove out before our
- 5:11fathers until the time of David, David found favor in God's
- 5:15sight, and asked that he might find a dwelling place for the
- 5:18God of Jacob. But it was Solomon who built a
- 5:21house for him. However, the Most High does not
- 5:23dwell in houses made by human hands.
- 5:25As the prophet says, Heaven is my throne and earth is the
- 5:29footstool of my feet. What kind of house will you
- 5:31build for me, says the Lord, Or what place is there for my
- 5:34repose? Was it not my hand which made
- 5:37all these things? You men who are stiff necked and
- 5:40uncircumcised in heart and ears, are always resisting the Holy
- 5:43Spirit. You were doing just as your
- 5:45Father's did. Which one of the prophets did
- 5:47your Father's not persecute? They killed those who had
- 5:49previously announced the coming of the righteous one whose
- 5:52betrayers and murderers you have now become.
- 5:55You who received the Law as ordained by angels, and yet did
- 5:58not keep it. Now when they heard this, they
- 6:01were cut to the quick, and they began gnashing their teeth at
- 6:04him. But being full of the Holy
- 6:05Spirit, he gazed intently into heaven, and saw the glory of
- 6:08God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.
- 6:12And he said, Behold, I see the heavens opened up, and the Son
- 6:15of man standing at the right hand of God.
- 6:17But they cried out with a loud voice, and covered their ears,
- 6:19and rushed at him with one impulse.
- 6:22When they had driven him out of the city, they began stoning
- 6:24him, and the witnesses laid aside their robes at the feet of
- 6:27a young man named Saul. They went on stoning Stephen as
- 6:30he called on the Lord and said, Lord Jesus, receive my Spirit.
- 6:34Then falling on his knees, he cried out with a loud voice,
- 6:37Lord, do not hold the sin against them.
- 6:40Having said this, he fell asleep.
