- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Welcome, everyone, to Connecting the Dots.
- 0:18I'm Alex. And I'm Morgan. Great to be with you.
- 0:20It is Tuesday, July 22nd, 2025. And yeah, we're
- 0:25ready to connect some dots on the tech news shaping
- 0:27your world. Absolutely. And shaping our day here
- 0:30in Sacramento, we've got, well, partly sunny
- 0:33skies expected, high of 79 Fahrenheit. Oh, nice.
- 0:38Pretty comfortable day, then. Yeah, definitely.
- 0:40Good day to dig into things. Okay, quick look
- 0:42at the markets from yesterday's close. The Dow
- 0:45Jones saw a little bit of a lift, closed up about
- 0:4740 points, so just under a tenth of a percent.
- 0:51Right, holding steady for the week, too, mostly.
- 0:53Yeah, small gain there. The S &P 500, though,
- 0:55dipped a tiny bit yesterday, down what, .11 %?
- 0:59Yeah, barely noticeable day over day, but it's
- 1:01still looking pretty good for the week, up almost
- 1:04three quarters of a percent. And Bitcoin. Still
- 1:07climbing. Jumped over 1 % yesterday. Wow. Yeah,
- 1:10over 1 ,200 points. And decent weekly growth,
- 1:13too. It's been on a tear. It really has. Speaking
- 1:16of tears, maybe some tears of frustration for
- 1:18Giants fans yesterday. Oh, yeah. Tough one. Lost
- 1:21to the Braves, 5 to 9. Yeah, saw that. Bryce
- 1:25Elder got the win for Atlanta. Yeah. On the bright
- 1:28side, Willie Adams had a monster day for us,
- 1:314 for 5, and a homer. Wow, OK. Nice individual
- 1:35effort. Just not enough in the end, I guess.
- 1:38Nope, that's baseball, right? True. OK, let's
- 1:41shift gears then. Time for the real game changers,
- 1:44the top tech stories from our Morningstar report.
- 1:47Yeah, we've got some really interesting stuff
- 1:49today. Big moves and AI talent, a crypto founder
- 1:53investigation wrapping up and just staggering
- 1:56numbers when it comes to AI chip orders. All
- 1:59right, let's jump into that first one. This is
- 2:00more than just hiring, it feels like, like a
- 2:02strategic acquisition of brain power. You know,
- 2:05Microsoft is really aggressively recruiting AI
- 2:08talent, especially from Google DeepMind and also
- 2:10Inflection AI. Yeah, the name that keeps popping
- 2:13up is Mustafa Suleyman. He's Microsoft AI CEO,
- 2:16but he also co -founded DeepMind. Right. And
- 2:18our sources say he's hired, get this, over 24
- 2:21people from Google DeepMind just in the last
- 2:23six months. Wow. That's quite a drain from Google.
- 2:26It really is, and it's very targeted. He just
- 2:29brought over three former DeepMind colleagues,
- 2:31Marco Talisaki, Zam Borsos, and Mathias Minderer.
- 2:35They're actually founding members for a new Microsoft
- 2:38AI office in Zurich. Zurich, OK, so specific
- 2:42roles. Exactly. Talisaki and Borsos, they're
- 2:45focusing on audio stuff. Think AI summarizing
- 2:48EFO into like a podcast format. Google's audio
- 2:51overviews, that kind of thing. And Minderer is
- 2:54all about Vision AI so really specific skill
- 2:58sets. He's pulling in it sounds like he's rebuilding
- 3:00his old team Almost like a coach bringing his
- 3:03star players with him kind of yeah, and it's
- 3:06not just Zurich remember back in December They
- 3:08hired Dominic King. Oh, right the former DeepMind
- 3:10health lead who's also a surgeon. That's the
- 3:12one He's now a VP leading Microsoft's new AI
- 3:15health unit And he brought others with him, like
- 3:18Christopher Kelly, another DeepMind scientist.
- 3:20So this isn't just about making Copilot better.
- 3:23It's about pushing into really specific, high
- 3:25-value areas like health. Precisely. And don't
- 3:28forget, Suleiman himself came from Inflection
- 3:30AI earlier this year and brought key people like
- 3:33Corinne Simonian with him. Right. So the big
- 3:36picture here, you know, it's this intense talent
- 3:39war, but it's evolved. It's not just individuals
- 3:41anymore. It's about acquiring whole teams, specialized
- 3:44knowledge, almost like carving up the AI expertise
- 3:48landscape. So for you listening, why does this
- 3:50matter? Well, it means Microsoft's consumer AI
- 3:53like Copilot could get smarter, faster, but maybe
- 3:56more importantly, they're aiming for breakthroughs
- 3:59in areas like health AI. Yeah, think about it,
- 4:01that Deloitte study. Nearly half of us 48 % are
- 4:04already using AI for health questions symptoms
- 4:07mental health stuff like that So bringing in
- 4:09this kind of specialized talent. It could lead
- 4:12to much more accurate Maybe more supportive AI
- 4:15health tools like that quit bot idea for smoking
- 4:17or AI that could potentially spot Alzheimer's
- 4:21earlier. Exactly. That's the potential impact
- 4:23It really makes you wonder, you know How will
- 4:25this deeper integration of AI change how we manage
- 4:28our own health this huge potential but Also brings
- 4:32up questions right regulation. Oh definitely
- 4:34all these close ties between the big tech players
- 4:37and smaller AI firms Federal agencies are already
- 4:41asking questions looking into the investments
- 4:43and partnerships Yeah, the tech moves fast the
- 4:45oversight needs to catch up always the case.
- 4:48Okay, so Next story a bit different. This one
- 4:52involves crypto investigations and reputation,
- 4:55right? The FBI has officially closed its investigation
- 4:58into Jesse Powell He's the co -founder of the
- 5:01Kraken crypto exchange. OK, that's big news for
- 5:03him. And they returned his devices. Yep. Dozens
- 5:07of devices seized in a raid back in mid -2023
- 5:10returned. Must be a massive relief. Now, this
- 5:13investigation, it wasn't actually about Kraken's
- 5:16business, was it? No, that's the key point. It
- 5:18had nothing to do with the exchange. It was all
- 5:19tied to allegations that Powell had hacked and
- 5:22cyber -stocked an arts nonprofit he co -founded,
- 5:25the Verge Center for the Arts, right here in
- 5:27Sacramento, actually. Oh, wow. Local connection.
- 5:30The personal dispute that escalated. Seems like
- 5:32it. Powell denied it all, said it was just about
- 5:35access to shared accounts like Google and Slack,
- 5:38and claimed the board tried to put him out. And
- 5:40now the DOJ says no charges. Exactly. They issued
- 5:43what's called a declination letter. Basically,
- 5:46case closed, investigation dropped, clears his
- 5:49name. federally on this specific issue. That's
- 5:52significant, not just personally, but you have
- 5:54to imagine it helps Kraken's image too, removing
- 5:57that cloud. For sure. It really shows how these
- 5:59high profile investigations, even if they're
- 6:01unrelated to the main business, can just, you
- 6:04know, hang over someone. Yeah, narratives form
- 6:06so quickly, especially in tech and crypto. Damage
- 6:09can be done even if nothing comes of it legally.
- 6:12Good reminder to separate the individual from
- 6:14the company sometimes. Definitely. And just to
- 6:17be clear, while the federal probe is over, Powell
- 6:19still has an ongoing civil lawsuit against the
- 6:22Verge board members. OK, so not entirely over,
- 6:25but the criminal investigation part is done.
- 6:28Right. Still complex. OK, let's pivot now from
- 6:30investigations to, well, just absolutely massive
- 6:34investments. We're talking Elon Musk's X .A .I.
- 6:37Yeah, the company behind the Grok Chatbot. They
- 6:40are looking to raise a ton of money. Initially,
- 6:43it was reported around $6 billion they were aiming
- 6:45for. Right, but now. Sources say they might have
- 6:48already raised up to $10 billion, and they could
- 6:50be pushing for $12 billion. $12 billion? Wow.
- 6:55And what's the main reason for raising that kind
- 6:57of cash? Get this. It's primarily to buy 100
- 7:00,000 Nvidia chips. 100 ,000? Just chips. Just
- 7:04chips. Well, not just chips. These are the high
- 7:06-end chips you need for serious AI development.
- 7:09They're for a new supercomputer XAI is building
- 7:12in Memphis. Okay, so this is the hardware side
- 7:15of the AI arms race front and center. Absolutely.
- 7:17That supercomputer is meant to power XAI's future
- 7:21work, maybe even help with Tesla's full self
- 7:23-driving tech. It shows you this race isn't just
- 7:26code. It's about massive infrastructure, raw
- 7:29compute power. And XAI is positioning itself
- 7:31directly against OpenAI, Google. Yep. Playing
- 7:34the big leagues. And it's classic Musk, right?
- 7:37He was apparently denying fundraising efforts
- 7:38not long ago. Now he's reportedly on investor
- 7:41calls talking about XAI's value. Sounds familiar.
- 7:44And wasn't there that recent merger with X, the
- 7:47social media platform? Yeah, an all -stock deal
- 7:49valued the combined company at $80 billion. Shows
- 7:53how intertwined all his ventures are becoming
- 7:55XAI, X, Tesla. It's all converging around AI.
- 7:59So for you, the listener, this huge spending
- 8:02spree on chips, what's the takeaway? Well, it
- 8:06could mean much more powerful AI tools coming
- 8:09down the line. Maybe Grok gets way better. Maybe
- 8:12self -driving tech takes the leap. It just highlights
- 8:14the incredible scale required now to compete
- 8:17at the very top of AI development. The investment
- 8:20is just staggering. It really signals where things
- 8:22are headed. Definitely. And one quick related
- 8:25point our sources mentioned on the political
- 8:27side. Apparently, President -elect Donald Trump
- 8:29plans to repeal Biden's executive order on AI.
- 8:32Oh, interesting. Yeah. Advocating for AI development
- 8:34based on the quote was free speech and human
- 8:37flourishing just shows how different approaches
- 8:39to regulating this powerful tech could emerge.
- 8:41We're just reporting what the source said there,
- 8:43of course. Right. Important context. OK, so let's
- 8:46quickly recap today's main stories. We started
- 8:48with Microsoft's big AI talent grab, pulling
- 8:51experienced teams from deep mind and inflection,
- 8:53especially for areas like AI health, really highlights
- 8:56the strategic nature of the talent war now. Then
- 8:59we had Jesse Powell. the cracking co -founder,
- 9:01getting his name cleared by the FBI in that investigation
- 9:04related to the Verge Center, reminding us how
- 9:07personal issues can impact public figures, even
- 9:10if unrelated to their main work. And finally,
- 9:13Elon Musk's ex -AI, looking to raise potentially
- 9:15$12 billion, mostly just to buy 100 ,000 Nvidia
- 9:19chips, really underscores the massive hardware
- 9:22investment needed in today's AI race. Yeah, all
- 9:24these stories really connect the dots between
- 9:26high -level tech strategy, individual Reputations
- 9:30massive investments and ultimately the technology
- 9:33that's increasingly shaping Well everything around
- 9:35us from health to how we get information It's
- 9:38moving incredibly fast lots to keep track of
