Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: My guest is Julius Tennon. He's a coach, president and
- 0:03Speaker 1: Juvie Productions, which he founded with his wife, Viola Davis.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Julius and accomplished film, television and theater veteran actor which
- 0:11Speaker 1: I didn't know all I knew it was producer. So
- 0:14Speaker 1: a reading this bio, I just I'm learning so much.
- 0:16Speaker 1: But we're gonna learn a lot to buy them on
- 0:18Speaker 1: this show because I'm spiling all the stuff I did know.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Produced with over thirty years of experience, ju v A
- 0:24Speaker 1: cree scripted and non scripted television, film, documentaries, theater and
- 0:27Speaker 1: digital immersive content for global audiences. The company currently has
- 0:31Speaker 1: the first look feature production deal with Amazon Studios on
- 0:35Speaker 1: the film side, as well as an overall development deal
- 0:38Speaker 1: with ABC Studios and ABC Signature Studios for broadcast, cable, streaming,
- 0:43Speaker 1: and digital platforms. Please working the Money Making Conversations master
- 0:46Speaker 1: Class the one and only Julius Tennon. How are you doing,
- 0:49Speaker 1: sir um del I'm doing good. Rashan, thank you so much.
- 0:52Speaker 1: And let me just say the ABC deal we had,
- 0:56Speaker 1: we went to Amazon. We let that deal after four
- 0:59Speaker 1: years and we into Amazon for a couple of years
- 1:02Speaker 1: and we've developed quite a robust roster of things, but
- 1:05Speaker 1: mandate changed and all those kinds of things. So right
- 1:08Speaker 1: now we're in the throes of finding a new deal
- 1:11Speaker 1: and we have a bunch of h we have a
- 1:13Speaker 1: bunch of fish biting. Yeah, so we're gonna have a
- 1:16Speaker 1: new deal here shortly. But I run at ABC was
- 1:20Speaker 1: certainly amazing and uh, and we really appreciated being in
- 1:24Speaker 1: that deal given the violin was doing How to Get
- 1:25Speaker 1: Away with Murder at the time, and so it uh
- 1:29Speaker 1: really voted well and we did. Uh. We did a
- 1:31Speaker 1: lot of things, got a lot of things out there.
- 1:33Speaker 1: So it set us up to where we already did
- 1:35Speaker 1: we know something, Julius, and thank you for taking the
- 1:37Speaker 1: time to come on the show because of the fact
- 1:38Speaker 1: that you know, I always realized that two people and
- 1:42Speaker 1: the process of getting success the person in the front
- 1:44Speaker 1: of the camera and the person behind the camera. And
- 1:46Speaker 1: you guys are doing something beautiful here success behind the camera,
- 1:50Speaker 1: which I categorize as you and her success in front
- 1:54Speaker 1: of the camera, not saying she don't do stuff behind
- 1:55Speaker 1: the camera, but that relationship. How does it make Juvy
- 1:59Speaker 1: Productions unique? Well, what you know for us, what makes
- 2:02Speaker 1: HUV production unique is the brand we have and the
- 2:06Speaker 1: brand is Viola Davis. I mean, you know, I mean,
- 2:09Speaker 1: and I've really uh take that, uh really seriously because
- 2:16Speaker 1: Viola is somebody who's very committed to her craft, and uh,
- 2:20Speaker 1: we're always looking for prestige, elevated content. I always think
- 2:25Speaker 1: anything that we're developing, what Viola Davis do this? And
- 2:30Speaker 1: if that answer is yes, then we know we know
- 2:33Speaker 1: we're going the right direction. Because the company was founded
- 2:37Speaker 1: to uh boast of Viola's career, because when you look
- 2:40Speaker 1: at Hollywood and and the pipeline, the general pipeline of
- 2:43Speaker 1: Hollywood gets a little thin. There's not a lot of
- 2:46Speaker 1: good content out there. And so after her Oscar nomination
- 2:49Speaker 1: for The Help in twos ten, we decided we need
- 2:52Speaker 1: to take the ball about a horn and we need
- 2:54Speaker 1: to create content for uh for an actor consumman of
- 2:59Speaker 1: Viola's one, so that we could tell the kind of
- 3:02Speaker 1: stories that she wanted to tell and she could step
- 3:04Speaker 1: into the kind of character she wanted to step into.
- 3:07Speaker 1: And so it was that thing initially, but then beyond that, Rashaan,
- 3:11Speaker 1: it became this thing where we said, you know, Bioa
- 3:13Speaker 1: can't consume all this content so what we want to do.
- 3:17Speaker 1: We want to be a voice to the voiceless. We
- 3:19Speaker 1: want to put our foot in the door, open it
- 3:21Speaker 1: and then allow talented people of color, Black, Asian, Mexican,
- 3:28Speaker 1: you name, and Indian whatever. So that became the driving
- 3:33Speaker 1: goals so that we could start filling a pipeline that's
- 3:36Speaker 1: really thin. Um and so uh, that's kind of been
- 3:41Speaker 1: I that's been our north star. And then obviously not
- 3:44Speaker 1: just looking at the US, but also international because now
- 3:48Speaker 1: that's a whole different play now, that whole that whole
- 3:51Speaker 1: misnomer about black content won't travel. That's changed in this day,
- 3:56Speaker 1: you know, because of analytics, because of streaming, because of everything.
- 4:00Speaker 1: So man, this is a unique opportunity right now, man
- 4:02Speaker 1: to do some to do some stuff in the world.
- 4:04Speaker 1: You know the thing about I'm glad you brought up
- 4:06Speaker 1: streaming because streaming to me as far as African American
- 4:09Speaker 1: content is the game changing because it's international. I always
- 4:12Speaker 1: look at Netflix and you know they're in a hundred
- 4:14Speaker 1: ninety countries, so in the product premiers there. Because you know,
- 4:17Speaker 1: as I self, when you go into the movie game,
- 4:20Speaker 1: it was a black lead or black concept. It was
- 4:23Speaker 1: only gonna stage the domestic it was, they weren't even
- 4:26Speaker 1: try to. But they might take the London, they might
- 4:29Speaker 1: take it to the Caribbeans and the African States. But
- 4:31Speaker 1: that's it. And so but streaming talk to us. Our
- 4:34Speaker 1: streaming is really allowed the black genre from a from
- 4:39Speaker 1: a standpoint of content to be exposed internationally. Now, well,
- 4:43Speaker 1: I mean, I think listen, I think people of color
- 4:46Speaker 1: are calling for this kind of content. We deserve to
- 4:49Speaker 1: have more of our stories told. We need to be
- 4:52Speaker 1: seen in a positive light and we're not interested in
- 4:55Speaker 1: tropes and stereotypes. And streaming allows you now because can
- 5:00Speaker 1: do analytics around it, so they know what can play
- 5:03Speaker 1: in different regions, and so you know, you can take
- 5:07Speaker 1: advantage of that because what I've found traveling in the
- 5:10Speaker 1: nationally is that audiences are just starving for this content.
- 5:15Speaker 1: So it's an exciting time, you know, and like TV,
- 5:18Speaker 1: I mean, there's so much stuff on TV you can
- 5:20Speaker 1: hardly keep up. But you know, it's it's really a
- 5:23Speaker 1: good thing because it allows more opportunities in front and
- 5:26Speaker 1: behind the camera. And so, um, I mean, you can't
- 5:31Speaker 1: quantify how awesome uh streaming is now and how all
- 5:35Speaker 1: companies are looking at that model the US, but certainly
- 5:39Speaker 1: now standing out across the globe. So that makes it
- 5:43Speaker 1: that much more exciting. And then where African American actors
- 5:47Speaker 1: and actors of color haven't been known, they finally start
- 5:50Speaker 1: getting an opportunity to be known on a global scale.
- 5:54Speaker 1: You know that. I keep going back to that global
- 5:57Speaker 1: you know, like Steve Harran Abu, we've way back on
- 6:00Speaker 1: the w B. You know, was that the world was
- 6:03Speaker 1: just so small, you know, but we were reaching success
- 6:06Speaker 1: but to a chosen few people. And now you look
- 6:11Speaker 1: at what's happening now internationally global content. But then when
- 6:15Speaker 1: you try to diversify, that's the key. When you were
- 6:17Speaker 1: talking about diversify, you see, people started getting mad when
- 6:21Speaker 1: I talk about casting. When we talk about the House
- 6:24Speaker 1: of the Dragon, Lord of the Rings. You know, your
- 6:27Speaker 1: wife there and you're there. Man, just from your standpoint,
- 6:31Speaker 1: isn't annoyance because you know you can you can this
- 6:34Speaker 1: is this isn't in real life characters, this faith, this
- 6:37Speaker 1: fantasy and they're made uh huh. List I always chill
- 6:43Speaker 1: my staff that what we'll do is hard. When you
- 6:47Speaker 1: want parody and you want equity, listen, we could be
- 6:49Speaker 1: we're fourteen percent of the population, But that don't mean
- 6:52Speaker 1: I want fourteen percent of the pie as much of
- 6:56Speaker 1: that pie as I can here and I think you
- 7:00Speaker 1: and that goes without saying without content. And I always
- 7:04Speaker 1: always always tell my staff and and and film, TV
- 7:08Speaker 1: and immersing and interactive that what we do is hard.
- 7:13Speaker 1: But you have to stay focused. You have to stay
- 7:17Speaker 1: on the case and your material that you're developing is
- 7:23Speaker 1: gonna stand on its own when you put the work
- 7:25Speaker 1: in you find the right partners. I liken it Rashaun
- 7:29Speaker 1: to a baby. The project is a baby, and then
- 7:32Speaker 1: how are we gonna when this baby is born? When
- 7:35Speaker 1: this when we're starting to birth this baby, how are
- 7:38Speaker 1: we going to take care of it as a group
- 7:40Speaker 1: so we can take it out to the town and
- 7:42Speaker 1: then uh sell it and then have success because we've
- 7:46Speaker 1: throught it, thought it through. But even if you think
- 7:48Speaker 1: it through, you know, with these shows, you just don't
- 7:50Speaker 1: know what's gonna happen. You do the best you can.
- 7:52Speaker 1: You put it out there, and then you try to
- 7:54Speaker 1: nurture it so that it lasts, because that's the only
- 7:57Speaker 1: way you can. You know, from a financial standpoint, you
- 7:59Speaker 1: gotta get owes out there, particularly with TV, and you
- 8:02Speaker 1: wanted to have longevity because when they're having longevity, then
- 8:06Speaker 1: more money is coming into the production company based on
- 8:09Speaker 1: the deal that you and so that's the that's always
- 8:14Speaker 1: the goal. The goal initially is just to get it
- 8:17Speaker 1: to somebody who loves it and they say we want
- 8:20Speaker 1: to green light it, because it's not enough to say
- 8:23Speaker 1: they take it off the table and they buy it.
- 8:25Speaker 1: But if you don't get it green let then no
- 8:28Speaker 1: revenue is coming in. N you know your deal because
- 8:31Speaker 1: when you're doing your deal, your deal says they're giving
- 8:35Speaker 1: you the deal so you can bring content to them
- 8:37Speaker 1: that could potentially uh be exposed to a global audience.
- 8:42Speaker 1: We'll be right back with more Money Making Conversations Masterclass
- 8:46Speaker 1: with Rushan McDonald. Now, let's return to Money Making Conversations
- 8:52Speaker 1: Masterclass with Rushan McDonald speaking to Julius Tendant. He's the
- 8:56Speaker 1: co president of ju V Productions, which he founded, was
- 8:59Speaker 1: his wife for all of Davis. You won't go step
- 9:02Speaker 1: up back and step a little bit about you, you know,
- 9:04Speaker 1: because of the fact that we're born in Austin, Texas
- 9:06Speaker 1: football player went to the University of Tulsa and then
- 9:11Speaker 1: there went did the acting bug coming to your life,
- 9:15Speaker 1: because you know, you know, when your football player get
- 9:17Speaker 1: a scholarship, you focused on being a football player. You know,
- 9:19Speaker 1: you just don't get a scholarship at a school like
- 9:21Speaker 1: the University of Tulsa because they like you. You had
- 9:24Speaker 1: to be good at what you do. And you know, Texas,
- 9:27Speaker 1: I'm born and raised in Houston, Texas. I know football
- 9:31Speaker 1: is king here. So how did you go football star?
- 9:35Speaker 1: University of Tulsa acting because you're the first African American
- 9:40Speaker 1: to graduate from Tulsa School of Theater. That's right, that's right. Well, listen, man.
- 9:46Speaker 1: It was one of those things that started when I
- 9:48Speaker 1: was in junior high school and literally started with pros
- 9:50Speaker 1: and poetry because I'm I'm a poetry recitator. I still
- 9:54Speaker 1: recitative poetry to this day. And then off of that,
- 9:57Speaker 1: I started doing a lot of behind the scenes work
- 10:00Speaker 1: and then, uh, and then I started to have a
- 10:02Speaker 1: thirst to kind of want to be up there because
- 10:05Speaker 1: looking at my friends do and I said, well, thank
- 10:07Speaker 1: I can you know. So it started in junior high
- 10:12Speaker 1: school and then I just I just stayed with it.
- 10:14Speaker 1: I stayed with it even when I played. When I
- 10:16Speaker 1: got to Tulsa, I was a foot I was a
- 10:18Speaker 1: theater major, and like I said, and as you just
- 10:21Speaker 1: uh so eloquently pointed out, I'm the first African American
- 10:25Speaker 1: in the history of the University of Tulsa to graduate
- 10:27Speaker 1: from the theater program there, and so it was just
- 10:29Speaker 1: kind of always a national thing with me. Uh And
- 10:32Speaker 1: you know, and I'm still I called myself producer actor
- 10:35Speaker 1: now because I still act here and there. I saw you,
- 10:38Speaker 1: I saw you, I saw you. But my producing is,
- 10:45Speaker 1: you know, is the thing that's in front. But I
- 10:47Speaker 1: still take a little choice things here there. And so
- 10:49Speaker 1: I mean I'm in a really great position. And now
- 10:52Speaker 1: with everything that's going on with streaming, I can play
- 10:55Speaker 1: all kinds of different things and and now I can
- 10:57Speaker 1: wait for the quality things to come because my careers
- 11:00Speaker 1: changed now and that whole quest to want to be
- 11:02Speaker 1: a star, which I think all of us that get
- 11:04Speaker 1: into it initially though, you know, I want to be
- 11:07Speaker 1: a star, but it's not so much about being a
- 11:09Speaker 1: start that there's just being a working actor. And I
- 11:11Speaker 1: think that's the goal that you should always strive for,
- 11:14Speaker 1: just to be a working actor. And then let depundance
- 11:17Speaker 1: and let everybody else say who you are, how great
- 11:19Speaker 1: you are, whatever. It's just about working. And so that's
- 11:23Speaker 1: kind of always been my mantra is just work, if
- 11:26Speaker 1: it comes, if it's right, just do it. And now
- 11:28Speaker 1: we're producing, and we're producing the kind of content, uh,
- 11:31Speaker 1: for people of color across the diaspra and and and
- 11:34Speaker 1: and and and and and beyond um that can affect
- 11:38Speaker 1: people's lives and those human stories. So that's become the thing.
- 11:42Speaker 1: But man, I've always loved acting, and uh, and I'm
- 11:45Speaker 1: going to continue to do it. Here's an interesting thing
- 11:47Speaker 1: about just hearing your transition. You know, like I've said,
- 11:51Speaker 1: you know, I would love talking to people like you, Julius,
- 11:53Speaker 1: because you know you've done so much. You just blow
- 11:56Speaker 1: through the whole arc, you know, like, well, you know
- 11:58Speaker 1: I've starting even hide there. You know, I like poetry,
- 12:01Speaker 1: and then I went to what you're told. So at
- 12:03Speaker 1: first Black the graduating theater and boot I'm here. No, no, no, no,
- 12:08Speaker 1: You're not gonna do my audience like that, because that's
- 12:11Speaker 1: why you're impressive to me, because we always because of
- 12:14Speaker 1: the fact that you know, you walk in the room,
- 12:16Speaker 1: you know you're the only one in there that's right,
- 12:19Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, And we're tossed to Oklahoma.
- 12:22Speaker 1: I'm from Texas, I know Oklahoma, Okay. And so because
- 12:26Speaker 1: I always that's always look at people going, well, you know,
- 12:28Speaker 1: just racism exist. Heck, yeah, hey, yeah it exists. You
- 12:32Speaker 1: know every time I walk in the room and they
- 12:33Speaker 1: know who I am. Okay, that's the difference maker. So,
- 12:36Speaker 1: but that didn't stop you from pursuing your dream because
- 12:40Speaker 1: of the fact that, again, Hollywood can be so far away,
- 12:44Speaker 1: Broadway can be so far away. When did you believe
- 12:47Speaker 1: this could be could be something that you felt you
- 12:50Speaker 1: could do? Well, you know what, you know, I think listen, Rashaan,
- 12:55Speaker 1: I think that you know, you always have a you know,
- 12:59Speaker 1: I always had this I I should say, to be successful.
- 13:02Speaker 1: My mom used to always say, how came you so
- 13:04Speaker 1: different from your other brothers and sisters? And I used
- 13:06Speaker 1: to say, well, I'm not any different. I just kind
- 13:08Speaker 1: of I'm looking at the given circumstance. I'm gotta know
- 13:12Speaker 1: what i want to do, and I'm not seeing that reflected.
- 13:17Speaker 1: And so I'm just gonna stay focused and stay on
- 13:19Speaker 1: the task and just keep moving forward one step at
- 13:23Speaker 1: a time. And then, obviously, you know, all these years
- 13:27Speaker 1: after being in l a for several years. Then I
- 13:29Speaker 1: you know, then I finally meet by Ola Davis. We
- 13:32Speaker 1: meet on the City of Angels uh. And then after
- 13:35Speaker 1: that we have this wonderful friendship that becomes this relationship
- 13:39Speaker 1: by all of my best friends. So we support each
- 13:43Speaker 1: other tremendously. But if became that thing, uh, and then
- 13:48Speaker 1: that's how kind of the producing thing came in because
- 13:51Speaker 1: then I gotta take care of this immense talent. And
- 13:56Speaker 1: like when you when you're when you're in my position,
- 14:00Speaker 1: my wife knows who I am, so I have to
- 14:03Speaker 1: know who I am so that way I can take
- 14:05Speaker 1: care of her properly and then not feel diminished. I
- 14:09Speaker 1: think you only diminish yourself if you don't know who
- 14:13Speaker 1: you are, because if you don't know who you are,
- 14:15Speaker 1: certainly your woman's gonna know you don't know who you are.
- 14:19Speaker 1: And that hasn't been our case. And my wife has
- 14:22Speaker 1: always saying, you know, you're a hell of actor. You
- 14:24Speaker 1: need to you should just be acting. So I know what,
- 14:27Speaker 1: I'll take some choice stuff here there, but uh, you know,
- 14:31Speaker 1: I'm running a company, I got nine employees, bust myself
- 14:34Speaker 1: and then whenever she's in helping out, when she's got
- 14:37Speaker 1: some breaks. That's that's it. But you know, I think Rashan,
- 14:39Speaker 1: you always it's a balance. You always have to know
- 14:44Speaker 1: win the hold him and win the fold them, right.
- 14:46Speaker 1: And what I mean by that is that you gotta know, hey, listen, uh,
- 14:50Speaker 1: I can't go away. I can't get a series regularly
- 14:53Speaker 1: something to be gone six months from the from the company,
- 14:56Speaker 1: right because well, because what I do for the company,
- 15:00Speaker 1: nobody else can do that. But I don't want to
- 15:02Speaker 1: run film, I don't want to run TV. I don't
- 15:06Speaker 1: want to run immersive and interactive UM. But I need
- 15:10Speaker 1: to be there because what I do and what I
- 15:12Speaker 1: bring is the passion of the company, the vision of
- 15:15Speaker 1: the company, and then I can set my guys up
- 15:18Speaker 1: for success. And so that's what I do. I'm not
- 15:21Speaker 1: a micro manager, but I believe in my folks and
- 15:25Speaker 1: then I give them the reins because if you're not
- 15:27Speaker 1: doing your job, I know you're not doing your job
- 15:29Speaker 1: and we're don't have a conversation. But when you're doing
- 15:32Speaker 1: what you're supposed to do, there's no lord and over you.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Let's go do this, Let's go get this for our people.
- 15:38Speaker 1: And so that's that's how we roll that's how I
- 15:40Speaker 1: roll and uh and it's and it's worked really beautiful
- 15:44Speaker 1: because listen, you get more sugar by giving things away,
- 15:47Speaker 1: then Lord and over people are making them feel like
- 15:50Speaker 1: crap and um. So you know, that's kind of been
- 15:54Speaker 1: another thing that just the way I do business right
- 15:57Speaker 1: about titles. I have an ego, but I don't have
- 16:00Speaker 1: an ego that prevents me from allowing other people to
- 16:02Speaker 1: shine cool. And you listen, you know, I really, you know,
- 16:07Speaker 1: I'm one of those guys. I'm in a position that
- 16:08Speaker 1: I don't really go to movie theaters. I really don't,
- 16:11Speaker 1: you know, you know, they go either gonna come to
- 16:14Speaker 1: my house because I'm I'm a voter, you know, US academies,
- 16:18Speaker 1: you know, so I'm gonna get the movie I want
- 16:20Speaker 1: to see at my house. Now. When the woman king,
- 16:23Speaker 1: I looked at my daughter, look at my wife. I said,
- 16:25Speaker 1: we're gonna. I said, we're gonna. We're gonna, you know,
- 16:29Speaker 1: And we were going because first of all, I support
- 16:33Speaker 1: my friends and I consider you a friend. And secondly,
- 16:38Speaker 1: you know Gina, who I love to death, as well
- 16:41Speaker 1: as the director. So there's a lot of pluses to this.
- 16:44Speaker 1: And when I walked in there you know my my daughter,
- 16:48Speaker 1: she's twenty five, my wife by my age, and uh,
- 16:52Speaker 1: just wonderful production, just wonderful storytelling about who we are.
- 16:56Speaker 1: How does one take a movie project like that, which
- 16:59Speaker 1: is idea and take to get it to the fort,
- 17:02Speaker 1: to get it to the big screen. How does that
- 17:04Speaker 1: process work? Let me tell you something, rich Shaun, you're
- 17:08Speaker 1: telling the story to Hollywood that's never been told before,
- 17:12Speaker 1: where you more dark skin and women being the lead.
- 17:18Speaker 1: And then all of these other black black people whether
- 17:21Speaker 1: they didn't have to depend on any white savior to
- 17:24Speaker 1: save them or do this. This was their world and
- 17:27Speaker 1: they had they did what they came and loaded a film.
- 17:32Speaker 1: Getting a film like this took us seven years. And
- 17:34Speaker 1: what I always say, and I say this to my
- 17:37Speaker 1: staff too, this right here the big ce courage. Courage
- 17:44Speaker 1: when you're doing something that's out of the box, that
- 17:46Speaker 1: hasn't been done in Hollywood before, and then you have
- 17:48Speaker 1: to go out there knowing you have a great product,
- 17:50Speaker 1: and then you have to find the right partners and
- 17:54Speaker 1: it might take a minute, but if you believe in
- 17:56Speaker 1: that thing, then you have to stick with it. And
- 18:00Speaker 1: that's what we did. And then we got some some
- 18:02Speaker 1: champions of the project over the over the course of
- 18:05Speaker 1: those seven years. And then finally, uh, you know, Sony
- 18:09Speaker 1: saw the value in this story. But trust me, it
- 18:14Speaker 1: was a fight. It was a fight for the budget.
- 18:16Speaker 1: It's a fight for the way the hair looks, as
- 18:18Speaker 1: a fight for makeup, is a fight for everything. But
- 18:21Speaker 1: we know you have something that's that's incredible and undeniable,
- 18:27Speaker 1: then you just stick with it. And that's what we
- 18:30Speaker 1: did because we knew that this story needed to get
- 18:33Speaker 1: out in the world, and we know we knew that
- 18:36Speaker 1: Hollywood has never done anything like this. So we're so proud,
- 18:40Speaker 1: and I'm so proud of all those women because here
- 18:42Speaker 1: I am, I'm I'm the one of the one the
- 18:47Speaker 1: only black man who was on that set. And seeing
- 18:50Speaker 1: these women execute at the highest level just absolutely and awesome,
- 18:57Speaker 1: you know, to the cinematographer, to the first aid d
- 19:00Speaker 1: to uh, to Terry Lynn Shropture, a genus editor, I mean, man,
- 19:06Speaker 1: women have a footprint all over this thing, man. And
- 19:09Speaker 1: I was there to support my sisters, and then I
- 19:11Speaker 1: was there to support my brothers and sisters in Africa
- 19:14Speaker 1: because you know, they don't have a union there. And
- 19:16Speaker 1: then and then when you're in South Africa and you're
- 19:19Speaker 1: shooting a movie like this, Folks aren't used to seeing
- 19:22Speaker 1: the black man have a voice. Yeah, I'm the I'm
- 19:25Speaker 1: the producer of this movie, so I voice and and
- 19:29Speaker 1: my big thing for me, I'm I'm the conflict resolution
- 19:32Speaker 1: dude that can talk to anybody, because at the end
- 19:35Speaker 1: of the day, when that camera, when that camera turns on,
- 19:38Speaker 1: then you got a day to get you gotta with it.
- 19:40Speaker 1: When that green light comes on, you gotta you gotta
- 19:43Speaker 1: get it, man, because money is on the line, and
- 19:45Speaker 1: so when things are out of order, then you gotta
- 19:48Speaker 1: kind of try to put it in order and in
- 19:51Speaker 1: a way that's human and humane and uh, trying to
- 19:55Speaker 1: figure out what's what's happening, what's going on, resolve it
- 19:58Speaker 1: and then let's get on with I did, and I
- 20:00Speaker 1: believe in thanking everybody, from the guy that's king the
- 20:04Speaker 1: toilets during COVID when we were there, to the guy
- 20:07Speaker 1: pulling cords. Everybody is important and so for me, I'm
- 20:12Speaker 1: always gonna be that producer that's gonna always appreciate the
- 20:16Speaker 1: whole and try to bring levity and try to lift
- 20:20Speaker 1: people up when they're feeling like it's not happening my actors.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Sometimes Gina was feeling like and I was always saying,
- 20:26Speaker 1: nosis that you got this. I'll tell my actors you
- 20:29Speaker 1: know what. I know it's hard and you're looking good.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Is hanging there you you're doing it, you know, because
- 20:34Speaker 1: sometimes you just need that. You need to hear a
- 20:37Speaker 1: voice saying that and so um that's you know, that's
- 20:42Speaker 1: kind of the way I operate. We'll be right back
- 20:45Speaker 1: with more Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rushan McDonald. Now,
- 20:51Speaker 1: let's return to Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rushan McDonald.
- 20:56Speaker 1: If you haven't seen The Woman King, The Woman King
- 20:58Speaker 1: is available for pre order now. It's available to watch
- 21:01Speaker 1: at home on digital v O D. Uh. Definitely. I
- 21:04Speaker 1: always tell my friends or anybody who calls the show,
- 21:06Speaker 1: send me a banner, because you know me. You know,
- 21:09Speaker 1: you know, you know I posed, brother, you know I posed, now,
- 21:12Speaker 1: so send me a bad people react to me when
- 21:14Speaker 1: I posed, So send me a banner so I can
- 21:16Speaker 1: get the word out about this because I didn't get
- 21:18Speaker 1: up know about this until I did my bio research
- 21:21Speaker 1: on you. There's money to be made on the v
- 21:24Speaker 1: O D and the and the pre says, so you
- 21:27Speaker 1: get that banner to me, man, I would put this
- 21:29Speaker 1: all in my social media, like I said, my whole
- 21:31Speaker 1: thing in my relationship with any especially people of color.
- 21:35Speaker 1: You guys are difference makers, and you you know you,
- 21:38Speaker 1: you'd be grinding so hard and violent, be acting so hard.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Y'all don't realize you when you're when you when the
- 21:43Speaker 1: cover pools back. We just looked back and awe. The
- 21:46Speaker 1: same thing with the woman King because the woman King,
- 21:49Speaker 1: I went there because we saw a black panther. Black
- 21:52Speaker 1: panther was a fantasy and it's still it's a great
- 21:53Speaker 1: fantasy for black women are powerful. This is reality. It's
- 22:00Speaker 1: just that story. Is why I said, you know some honey,
- 22:04Speaker 1: my daughter, we're going right now. The first first, you know,
- 22:09Speaker 1: give me a reserve to see, give me some popcorn.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Your boy going in. And that's why b just told you, brother,
- 22:14Speaker 1: don't worry about this. This part of the horse is
- 22:17Speaker 1: riding your way. And I posted everywhere, so I just
- 22:21Speaker 1: had to let you know that. Man. I know we
- 22:22Speaker 1: hadn't talked to a long time man, but I'd let
- 22:24Speaker 1: you know. Brother, Look you're both over here. Don't worry
- 22:27Speaker 1: about this, brother. You got a great project. And that's
- 22:30Speaker 1: the part of the grind we all need to hear
- 22:32Speaker 1: because sometimes people those slings and arrows and you don't
- 22:36Speaker 1: know why. And because of the fact when you raise
- 22:38Speaker 1: your head up, do you have the dump now on
- 22:40Speaker 1: a great project? Because I'm understand what goes into and
- 22:44Speaker 1: I mean a lot of times when you see the
- 22:45Speaker 1: finished project, you know all the battles and all the
- 22:49Speaker 1: things that happened before this movement came to life. And
- 22:54Speaker 1: it's the hard work. And it was a very hard shoot,
- 22:58Speaker 1: and we ended up having COVID we have to shut
- 23:00Speaker 1: down for for a little over three weeks, three weeks
- 23:03Speaker 1: of a couple of days, and then we came back
- 23:06Speaker 1: to the task and then we got the film done.
- 23:08Speaker 1: But you know, there's all kinds of things that are
- 23:10Speaker 1: going on when you're in production, so many moving parts,
- 23:14Speaker 1: and you just kind of want to keep the train,
- 23:16Speaker 1: as I said, keep the train on the tracks, and
- 23:19Speaker 1: let's get her done. And that's that's what we did,
- 23:22Speaker 1: you know. And and and because we knew the importance. Everybody,
- 23:25Speaker 1: everybody and on this film understood the importance of this film,
- 23:29Speaker 1: and we didn't want to disappoint. We wanted to deliver
- 23:32Speaker 1: something that would have everything that that speaks to the
- 23:36Speaker 1: human spirit. You know, everything is in this movie. So
- 23:40Speaker 1: that's why viscerally you're getting these gasps and laughs and pride. Right,
- 23:47Speaker 1: you just feel like, God, damn, this is us. If
- 23:52Speaker 1: we could come together like that, please we can. You know,
- 23:57Speaker 1: it's no limit to what we can do, you know.
- 24:00Speaker 1: And so that was that was the whole idea. Everybody
- 24:04Speaker 1: knew how important it wasn't we went and got it,
- 24:07Speaker 1: but it was important as we As we closed this interview,
- 24:09Speaker 1: thank you for giving me the time to interview Julius Um.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Methods that help you win? I always like to ask
- 24:16Speaker 1: people who would like you because you you you said
- 24:19Speaker 1: a little bitter, but just to hear, but have my audience,
- 24:22Speaker 1: what are some of the methods that help you win? Well,
- 24:25Speaker 1: you know what. One of the things is that you know,
- 24:30Speaker 1: you have to know who you are, you have to
- 24:33Speaker 1: know what it is you want to put into the world,
- 24:36Speaker 1: and then you have to be dedicated to do the
- 24:40Speaker 1: hard work to make it happen. Because it's only on
- 24:43Speaker 1: the other side of hard work that the success that
- 24:46Speaker 1: the money's gonna come. And so in our business it
- 24:49Speaker 1: can be really kind of fickle. But you have to
- 24:52Speaker 1: stay you have to stay focused, and you have to
- 24:56Speaker 1: know what it is you want to do, and then
- 24:59Speaker 1: you have to have the courage and samona to do
- 25:04Speaker 1: it because in our business sometimes to take seven years
- 25:07Speaker 1: to this one sometimes takes right. You believe in it
- 25:11Speaker 1: and you stick with it. Good things happen. Cool. Every Wednesday,
- 25:14Speaker 1: I have a newsletter goes out to six or six
- 25:16Speaker 1: thousand people, have an open rate of thirty seven percent.
- 25:20Speaker 1: Send me that badder brother second dropping in there so
- 25:22Speaker 1: I can put it on model million followers. I put
- 25:25Speaker 1: it on my linked in account. Hey, but I can
- 25:27Speaker 1: only accept and support greatness and what you and Bothered
- 25:31Speaker 1: doing man, not only inspires me and also younger people.
- 25:34Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure people have walked up to you you go,
- 25:36Speaker 1: you know you I spoke to you several years ago
- 25:39Speaker 1: when I was just an assistant or I was doing security,
- 25:42Speaker 1: or you go, huh, and you know because you're doing it, brother,
- 25:46Speaker 1: I know, I know it's happened to you. Do I
- 25:48Speaker 1: know it just trips you out. It happens to me.
- 25:50Speaker 1: I go, I go, okay, man, And they said, you
- 25:53Speaker 1: know you were the only producer eppisode that was Black
- 25:55Speaker 1: Owners set or executive producer. Black Owners said, there was
- 25:58Speaker 1: a man. Man, that's that's why I just gotta called
- 26:02Speaker 1: tip my hat. Brother. Let you know I'm tipping my
- 26:04Speaker 1: hat and said thank you. We're at the front line.
- 26:07Speaker 1: You're a little bit further front than me, but I
- 26:09Speaker 1: love it, man, and I'm gonna support you. So get
- 26:11Speaker 1: those batteries to you. Know what, brother, though, I'm gonna
- 26:13Speaker 1: pull you up. I'm gonna throw you the rule and
- 26:15Speaker 1: I'm gonna pull you right up with you. You're gonna
- 26:17Speaker 1: we're gonna keep doing this together. That's what we have
- 26:19Speaker 1: to do. We gotta pull each other up. We gotta
- 26:21Speaker 1: believe in who we are and then we have to
- 26:23Speaker 1: support one another. That's important. Julius, thank you for the time. Man.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Get those batteries to me. Man. I love you brother,
- 26:30Speaker 1: your smile is fantastic. And any time you need me
- 26:32Speaker 1: on the promotion and I'm there for you. Okay, appreciate you,
- 26:35Speaker 1: love your brother, take care of by bye.
