Born in 1515, Anne grew up in Germany and was the sister of the Duke of Cleves. In 1539, King Henry VIII was on the lookout for a new wife, and Anne was suggested as a suitable candidate. After seeing a portrait of Anne, Henry agreed to the marriage and Anne made her way to England to be wed. However, upon meeting Anne in person, Henry was disappointed with her appearance and the marriage was never consummated.
