- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to my show, Money Making Conversation Masterclass. I am
- 0:03Speaker 1: your host with Sean McDonald. I recognize that we all
- 0:05Speaker 1: have different definitions of success. For you, it may be
- 0:08Speaker 1: the size of your paycheck. Mine has inspired people to
- 0:10Speaker 1: develop a plan to reach their dreams. It's time to
- 0:13Speaker 1: start reading other people's success stories to start writing your own.
- 0:16Speaker 1: You can only see the expectations by believing in yourself.
- 0:19Speaker 1: People always talk about their purpose of gifts. If you
- 0:22Speaker 1: have a gift because you read about it on social
- 0:24Speaker 1: media all the time. People are always talking about that passion,
- 0:26Speaker 1: then leave with your gifts and importantly here this don't
- 0:30Speaker 1: let your friends, family, or coworker stop you from planning
- 0:33Speaker 1: living your dreams. My guest today is Longtime Relationship James
- 0:37Speaker 1: du bos his general manager of foxhol Network. Foxhold is
- 0:41Speaker 1: the black community premier free streaming platform. Sermon. This is
- 0:45Speaker 1: what they say in the advertising and I love it.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Unapologetically black, consumable by all entertainment around the clock. With
- 0:52Speaker 1: over thirteen hundred hours of live and interactive programming annually,
- 0:56Speaker 1: Fox sold is home for some of the most iconic
- 0:58Speaker 1: faces and voices of our culture. Under James leadership to
- 1:02Speaker 1: streaming challenge going from concept. I was there concept when
- 1:06Speaker 1: him Steve Brown Boy, it was just a local thing
- 1:08Speaker 1: in l A. Not look at it now, Bro, fifty
- 1:10Speaker 1: five million viewers in less than two years as a
- 1:13Speaker 1: long time television producer, filmmaker and entertainment industry executive. Because
- 1:17Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about this his brothers with from Phil Collins,
- 1:20Speaker 1: Karvied hard p did he whoo. His resume is way
- 1:24Speaker 1: beyond this, but it prepared him to do and be
- 1:27Speaker 1: able to man a network like that. And you can
- 1:30Speaker 1: throw in this nation to now with James and his
- 1:32Speaker 1: current title in the role Fox Soldiers leading the charge
- 1:35Speaker 1: and showcasing the diversity of black experiences. Please working the
- 1:39Speaker 1: money Making Conversation master Class the one and Oly James
- 1:41Speaker 1: du Bose, How you on, my friend? I'm doing well man,
- 1:45Speaker 1: Thank you for having And first of all, James, you
- 1:46Speaker 1: look good and you look young. That that's that's good, Bro,
- 1:49Speaker 1: that's good. Look good that that little acts black dog crack.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Is it working for you? I listened. Both of those
- 1:56Speaker 1: are not true. Man. Listen that intro you just did that.
- 2:00Speaker 1: That motivation I don't I don't know how to follow that.
- 2:03Speaker 1: I appreciate it. But that's what your network is. Your
- 2:07Speaker 1: network is that motivation, Your network is, you know, and
- 2:11Speaker 1: I want to I want to talk about you. I
- 2:13Speaker 1: want to talk about the network because it has so
- 2:15Speaker 1: many different levels and when this whole world of you know,
- 2:19Speaker 1: because you have you know, let's let'sen to all this conversation.
- 2:21Speaker 1: You have BT out there that started with the music
- 2:23Speaker 1: videos launched on all and they went into the reality stream.
- 2:26Speaker 1: The TV one jumped out there, but we still were
- 2:30Speaker 1: shining away from what I like to call news real
- 2:35Speaker 1: cultural context conversations because either b T or TV one
- 2:40Speaker 1: thought that okay, that that wasn't ratings wise, it didn't win.
- 2:43Speaker 1: And on your network you have it that you have
- 2:46Speaker 1: the two stories, you have the the the conversations. That's
- 2:50Speaker 1: why I think your network is important. And that's why
- 2:52Speaker 1: one of the reasons I wanted to bring you on
- 2:54Speaker 1: the show, just to talk about that whole concept and
- 2:56Speaker 1: maintaining that integrity. I appreciate that, you know, the difference
- 3:01Speaker 1: is to be quite honest, when we started this and
- 3:04Speaker 1: you were there in the in the very beginning, was
- 3:08Speaker 1: there was no way I was gonna come out the
- 3:10Speaker 1: gating and compete against BT Revolt TV one and so forth,
- 3:14Speaker 1: because they had this head started this marathon. But the
- 3:18Speaker 1: one thing I felt was very important that would separate
- 3:21Speaker 1: us was to truly give our community and our culture
- 3:24Speaker 1: a voice, unapologetically voice where they could come and speak
- 3:29Speaker 1: publicly what we normally only discussed provacily, privately, privately within
- 3:33Speaker 1: the world, the provicy of our own homes. And similar
- 3:37Speaker 1: to you, like what I mentioned, your name, everyone knows
- 3:40Speaker 1: your name right and and and everyone knows your name.
- 3:43Speaker 1: You've done so much, but to the point is that
- 3:46Speaker 1: you they've seeing your name on credits, they know what
- 3:49Speaker 1: you've helped others to build, but they've never really had
- 3:52Speaker 1: an opportunity to hear your voice, to hear your perspective,
- 3:56Speaker 1: to get inside your mind and to learn from And
- 3:59Speaker 1: that's what um being authentic with the voices that we
- 4:03Speaker 1: have on Fox. So but I felt was very important
- 4:05Speaker 1: because everyone has a story and a lot of us
- 4:08Speaker 1: our stories needs to be heard and everyone can teach
- 4:11Speaker 1: us something, but we normally don't get those voices on
- 4:15Speaker 1: traditional outlets, And so it fought so I'm gonna bring
- 4:18Speaker 1: the voices or we wanted to bring the voice that
- 4:20Speaker 1: has the perspective that we can learn from um and
- 4:24Speaker 1: that we could pick up a book of our own people,
- 4:27Speaker 1: of our own culture that is trying to get us
- 4:31Speaker 1: to the next level. We learn how to work together,
- 4:34Speaker 1: but most importantly speak the truth of what we have
- 4:38Speaker 1: to deal with on the day to day basis of
- 4:40Speaker 1: baby who we are in this in this world. You know,
- 4:42Speaker 1: it's really interesting because you know this this is my perspective,
- 4:46Speaker 1: you know, because you know you have CNN out there
- 4:49Speaker 1: and say, ye have Fox News and you like you say,
- 4:54Speaker 1: you every vote out there, you have you know, TV
- 4:56Speaker 1: one out there, you have b T. Those are more
- 4:59Speaker 1: commercial driven platforms. But the Fox News as an identified audience,
- 5:04Speaker 1: they know exactly who they're talking about. And then they've
- 5:07Speaker 1: they've they've the cultivate that arguments and turning into a
- 5:10Speaker 1: revenue generator because the advertisers know exactly who they're talking to.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Is there a model you're you're you're replicating or this
- 5:19Speaker 1: just an original format that you're putting out there. Just
- 5:22Speaker 1: just really getting into the culture and giving us a
- 5:24Speaker 1: voice that speaks for us. Because that's what I see
- 5:28Speaker 1: when I go to a Fox Soul. Well, I mean,
- 5:32Speaker 1: the bottom line is, like you just said, Fox News
- 5:34Speaker 1: knows who they're talking to. Yes, I know who I'm
- 5:37Speaker 1: talking right, right, right, I and I and I think
- 5:41Speaker 1: that audience to who we're trying to talk to is
- 5:43Speaker 1: extremely valuable. Our black community is extremely valuable, and I
- 5:47Speaker 1: want to give them a voice and speak to them
- 5:49Speaker 1: in a way that we were sitting around the table,
- 5:51Speaker 1: we would have that honest conversation. Now, you can't imagine
- 5:55Speaker 1: starting Fox So through Fox was Hodd that's going what
- 6:00Speaker 1: happened with Fox News? Right? I used to get that
- 6:03Speaker 1: question for the first two You know that the cause
- 6:06Speaker 1: we had in the beginning, you know Fox exactly, exactly exactly.
- 6:11Speaker 1: But I think when you do watch Fox Soul, I
- 6:15Speaker 1: don't get those questions no more because when you watch
- 6:17Speaker 1: and you listen to the voices and what we say,
- 6:20Speaker 1: you realize that there's nobody not of the culture pulling
- 6:23Speaker 1: the strength for us. And it was very important that
- 6:28Speaker 1: I wasn't just gonna be the black face of this
- 6:30Speaker 1: thing and someone that's not on the culture pull of
- 6:32Speaker 1: the streams. And we couldn't do we wanted to do
- 6:34Speaker 1: and say what we wanted to say in the proper way,
- 6:37Speaker 1: which is very important. So Fox So is the place
- 6:41Speaker 1: that you could be your authentic self and you can
- 6:45Speaker 1: speak your truth, whatever that may be. UM. And so
- 6:48Speaker 1: that's who I'm speaking to that audience, the culture in
- 6:52Speaker 1: a way that we can't go anywhere else and and
- 6:55Speaker 1: and talk that talk if you will, right, I was
- 6:57Speaker 1: speaking of James de bos He's the general manager of
- 6:59Speaker 1: Fox Soul Network. Fox sold is the black community premier
- 7:03Speaker 1: free streaming platform serving unapologetically black consumable by all entertainment
- 7:09Speaker 1: around the club. And the reason I bring it up
- 7:12Speaker 1: this is a perfect time. You know, we just come
- 7:13Speaker 1: off an election period. Here did that? How did did
- 7:18Speaker 1: you shift in the programming? We always had programming in
- 7:20Speaker 1: place for allow us to say this is where you
- 7:23Speaker 1: can come. I know you didn't do a election night
- 7:25Speaker 1: and things like that. Is that where were eventually gonna
- 7:28Speaker 1: go with some of your programming because of the fact
- 7:31Speaker 1: that we know when I go there, I know I'm
- 7:33Speaker 1: going there for for our organic conversations that are authentic.
- 7:38Speaker 1: What is the vision? Because that's what I felt that
- 7:40Speaker 1: I was missing and not just saying there's nothing negative
- 7:43Speaker 1: because when I because I I don't get it on revote,
- 7:47Speaker 1: I don't get it on b T, I don't get
- 7:49Speaker 1: it on TV one, and that's that's one of these
- 7:51Speaker 1: otherest conversations because I felt I wanted it there. But
- 7:54Speaker 1: is that part of the programming the future? So speaking
- 7:58Speaker 1: of the terms, I don't know if you're aware. I
- 8:00Speaker 1: preempted all of our programming on on Tuesday and we
- 8:04Speaker 1: did a six hour election night block with with with
- 8:09Speaker 1: on Fox should Uh dominated printing, We had Ednia, we
- 8:14Speaker 1: had guests come in, We spoke about how the midterm
- 8:18Speaker 1: election would affect our community and our culture for six hours,
- 8:23Speaker 1: Um and I preempted everything. It was extremely important. We
- 8:26Speaker 1: wanted to teach UM maybe the part of the community
- 8:29Speaker 1: that wasn't as into politics because they don't really speak
- 8:33Speaker 1: to us on all the outlets we were. We did that,
- 8:37Speaker 1: we were able to do that, We would continue to
- 8:39Speaker 1: do that. So that is a big part anything that's
- 8:42Speaker 1: going to affect the community. Box should is going to
- 8:45Speaker 1: be a part of it. Until we'll no longer here,
- 8:47Speaker 1: We'll be right back with more Money Making Conversations Masterclass
- 8:51Speaker 1: with Rushan McDonald. Now let's return to Money Making Conversations
- 8:57Speaker 1: Masterclass with Rushan McDonald. Well, that's that's powerful because of
- 9:01Speaker 1: the fact that I'm sorry I missed it because you know,
- 9:04Speaker 1: because of the thing about it is that what I
- 9:06Speaker 1: just try to do, James, and just trying to extend
- 9:09Speaker 1: the vos, you know, working with Steve Harvey and working
- 9:11Speaker 1: with Steven A. Smith and you know, and work with
- 9:13Speaker 1: other clients that I've had over the years, and being
- 9:15Speaker 1: able to produce shows the message I've always wanted to
- 9:18Speaker 1: give out his information and we can change the world
- 9:23Speaker 1: if we participate. And your network that you're overseeing as
- 9:28Speaker 1: a network, I feel is one of those consumable using
- 9:30Speaker 1: when your tagline networks that allow us to come there
- 9:33Speaker 1: to win, and I consider the winning streaming network for
- 9:37Speaker 1: black people. Your thoughts, No, absolutely, and again um respectfully
- 9:45Speaker 1: speaking of the uh the elections to be terms again
- 9:49Speaker 1: for black people, where else can you go and get
- 9:51Speaker 1: the news like that? Right? And it's rhetorical, but I
- 9:54Speaker 1: just want to answer the question. Right. We have our
- 9:56Speaker 1: daily news show called The Black People. People should tune
- 10:00Speaker 1: into that. It is of the culture, by the culture.
- 10:02Speaker 1: We're talking about news that affects us and not just
- 10:06Speaker 1: the psychologically stabilitated news. Because if you just watch news
- 10:10Speaker 1: about us five days a week, every day, we're dying,
- 10:13Speaker 1: going to jail, just that and the other. We have
- 10:15Speaker 1: a balance. We speak about the real news, but we
- 10:18Speaker 1: also showcase the black excellence. We also showcase things that
- 10:21Speaker 1: that a balance in the culture that no one UM
- 10:25Speaker 1: really talks about on traditional outlets. So I really want
- 10:28Speaker 1: people to dive into as we leave further into this
- 10:30Speaker 1: news thing UM is to really think about watching the
- 10:34Speaker 1: Black Reports. Tune into that for just one episode, do
- 10:36Speaker 1: you come back? Because it's not like any other news outlet.
- 10:39Speaker 1: It is truly a news show. We speak about the
- 10:43Speaker 1: news and so forth. So in terms of winning, I
- 10:46Speaker 1: think SO is the premiere and I understand this is promotion.
- 10:49Speaker 1: I really believe it's It is the premiere destination for
- 10:53Speaker 1: black content for two reasons. You can speak your mind
- 10:59Speaker 1: and you can hear your thoughts live without it being
- 11:02Speaker 1: watered down. My goal was to do with Fox so
- 11:05Speaker 1: to the community, which is the reason I say unapologetically
- 11:08Speaker 1: black but consumer by all is what I felt like
- 11:11Speaker 1: hip hop did for the music UM industry. Everyone thought
- 11:15Speaker 1: when it first came out it wasn't gonna last. It's
- 11:17Speaker 1: just coming from the hood and so forth. Now the
- 11:20Speaker 1: non black coach consumer more hip hop than the black
- 11:22Speaker 1: coach itselfs right because they've learned to respect our voices,
- 11:26Speaker 1: to respect our truth, if you will, and to what
- 11:29Speaker 1: I call going on the safari, you can go see
- 11:32Speaker 1: the dangers that we have to face every day without
- 11:35Speaker 1: having to get bit by any animals that our bought.
- 11:37Speaker 1: And so that's that's that's that's what hip hop is
- 11:41Speaker 1: and so Fox. So we want you to participate. We
- 11:44Speaker 1: want everyone to participate. It is very important and um
- 11:47Speaker 1: that we do that because we have a voice that
- 11:50Speaker 1: I feel like it respect, it should be respected even
- 11:53Speaker 1: more and can bring all cultures together through through the
- 11:56Speaker 1: p o V of black people and us being on things.
- 11:59Speaker 1: When you know the beauty of what you're doing over there,
- 12:02Speaker 1: when did you realize because everything is a job. You
- 12:05Speaker 1: know that, James an opportunity to you. You know, it's
- 12:07Speaker 1: a check that gets you excited and then the creative part.
- 12:10Speaker 1: But bottom line, we gotta get paid and we gotta
- 12:13Speaker 1: we gotta think that we're making a difference. When did
- 12:15Speaker 1: you realize that, Man, I'm only something. I'm overseeing something
- 12:19Speaker 1: that you know, because I know you're like me. We
- 12:22Speaker 1: want to change the world. Man, You know that somewhere
- 12:25Speaker 1: along the line this is one of those projects that
- 12:27Speaker 1: you're overseeing. Seriously, I feel can change the world. Because
- 12:32Speaker 1: when you stream, you stream internationally. They see that show
- 12:35Speaker 1: in Africa, they see that show in Brazil, they see
- 12:37Speaker 1: it in Russia. That's the type of content that we
- 12:40Speaker 1: are under that we're not tied to a cable network
- 12:43Speaker 1: which maybe only be seen in the States. That's a
- 12:46Speaker 1: powerful statement tied to your network that you're distributing this
- 12:49Speaker 1: type of content worldwide. Absolutely, I felt like we were
- 12:55Speaker 1: onto something. Again, it goes back to you was I
- 12:57Speaker 1: knew he was there in the beginning when they first
- 12:59Speaker 1: came to me to to actually helped put this together
- 13:03Speaker 1: from ground zero. It wasn't like they decided to do
- 13:07Speaker 1: this and this was up and running and then they're like, hey,
- 13:09Speaker 1: we need someone to run this thing. If the question
- 13:12Speaker 1: was how do we do this, how do we do
- 13:14Speaker 1: it in an authentic way, and how do we do
- 13:16Speaker 1: it facing the elephant in the room that many people
- 13:19Speaker 1: are gonna have that question of how it is fostering
- 13:21Speaker 1: to do a black network when they are a money
- 13:24Speaker 1: making machine behind Foster News. So once they said to me,
- 13:27Speaker 1: we're gonna give you the runway and get out your
- 13:29Speaker 1: way I knew then that we were gonna be onto
- 13:32Speaker 1: something because my whole career, I've been blessed the good,
- 13:36Speaker 1: the bad, the ups and downs, is feeding the culture.
- 13:40Speaker 1: So I've been doing what the culture has been thirsty for,
- 13:43Speaker 1: if you will. And this game an opportunity to to
- 13:46Speaker 1: to to sort of feed that hunger and quinch that
- 13:48Speaker 1: thirst in an authentic way. And and it's a job,
- 13:51Speaker 1: and we're not there yet, um, But every day I
- 13:54Speaker 1: get the opportunity to do that, man, and wake up
- 13:56Speaker 1: and and and you know, I'm extremely blessed to do that.
- 13:59Speaker 1: I just want all other culture to give it an opportunity,
- 14:02Speaker 1: um to do that like they do other other outlets.
- 14:06Speaker 1: And I know it's new, we all it would be
- 14:07Speaker 1: three years old Jane w thirteenth of next year. But
- 14:10Speaker 1: I think with that said, it's incredible. But what the
- 14:15Speaker 1: whole team has been able to accomplish in a short
- 14:17Speaker 1: period of time and the number of eyeballs and incredibility
- 14:20Speaker 1: that we brought the Fox Farm. Wow, you're saying three years, man,
- 14:24Speaker 1: that's how it feels like five. Really? If you know
- 14:27Speaker 1: when I when I got the type of content y'all
- 14:29Speaker 1: putting out there, Let's talk about some content, you know,
- 14:31Speaker 1: like like I really do enjoyed the Book of Sean.
- 14:34Speaker 1: I love you got you know, I'm gonna throw out
- 14:36Speaker 1: some name. We're gonna come back his show, you know,
- 14:38Speaker 1: Tammy Max show, Uh, Claudia and George. She all over everything.
- 14:42Speaker 1: I like, high energy, Viica Fox. Will she ever get old?
- 14:46Speaker 1: She's on that doing her thing. So so you you
- 14:49Speaker 1: got a little bit of everything on that show. So
- 14:52Speaker 1: let's start with the names that you you know, want
- 14:55Speaker 1: to say, viviicul fist to Claudia Jordan's and the Tammy
- 14:57Speaker 1: Max because they got outlets. You know, she does radio
- 15:00Speaker 1: in l A. Because all over the place, Clardia and
- 15:02Speaker 1: Jordan the face of hosts and different shows. That's the
- 15:05Speaker 1: name that brings the eyeballs to you guys. Is that
- 15:09Speaker 1: is that? Then Tammy Ron. But don't want to forget
- 15:11Speaker 1: about her, you know it is that? Is that strategically
- 15:16Speaker 1: why they're entied to the network or they brought ideas
- 15:19Speaker 1: to you and you said, let's go with it. Well,
- 15:22Speaker 1: a couple of things. You know, we've had Angela yee
- 15:26Speaker 1: um jeezy. I don't want to forget anyone that's really
- 15:31Speaker 1: got man on down, rape Frocket and yes, of course
- 15:34Speaker 1: all the names and you just name the idea. Again,
- 15:37Speaker 1: it wasn't necessarily about the celebrity factor of it. It
- 15:40Speaker 1: was about people who had a perspective that hadn't been
- 15:45Speaker 1: heard on a consistent basis, that that wanted to speak
- 15:48Speaker 1: their truth. So, you know, Villica Less to have a
- 15:52Speaker 1: vivigat Fox on on the network, Lisa Ray Um Selena Johnson.
- 15:57Speaker 1: This that was actually born out of from Claudia Claudio
- 16:01Speaker 1: Jordan's UM. They had a segment with with with these
- 16:04Speaker 1: Ladies one time on UM that the Queens show, the
- 16:08Speaker 1: Cree Show, Yeahs with the Queens, and it did so
- 16:11Speaker 1: well and we decided to make to make a weekly
- 16:15Speaker 1: show out of it. And if you really won't fall
- 16:18Speaker 1: into that show, you see a different side of those ladies.
- 16:21Speaker 1: You see the the emotional side, You see the queen
- 16:25Speaker 1: side that they really are, how smart these these ladies are.
- 16:29Speaker 1: You get the opportunity to hear that perspective on a
- 16:31Speaker 1: variety of subject matter that is happening in the world.
- 16:34Speaker 1: And I think that's why UM that show is so
- 16:38Speaker 1: successful for us because and also importantly is that you're
- 16:42Speaker 1: seeing queens lifting other queens up on on on. I'm
- 16:48Speaker 1: afraid of that show. I remember when it first came out,
- 16:49Speaker 1: because you know, Vivica can talk, and Claude that can talk,
- 16:52Speaker 1: and Lata in the beginning she was real quiet. I
- 16:55Speaker 1: don't know, you know, it's kind of like jumping rope.
- 16:57Speaker 1: She didn't know when to jump in. Oh no, that
- 16:59Speaker 1: ain't the case. No, my brother another that. No, No,
- 17:04Speaker 1: they're all they found their voice. I think they found
- 17:07Speaker 1: that rhythm. And again, you gotta understand it's difficult as well.
- 17:10Speaker 1: This show was born in the pandemic, right and in
- 17:15Speaker 1: a zoom say, it's not like they were ever in
- 17:16Speaker 1: the studio together to feel that energy to play off
- 17:20Speaker 1: one another there at home, um, having to play off
- 17:24Speaker 1: each other and understand that so so so so it
- 17:26Speaker 1: takes you know, it takes a little bit to do that.
- 17:29Speaker 1: But they found that really man, and that is a huge, huge,
- 17:32Speaker 1: huge show. Fuss. That's something I don't want to use
- 17:36Speaker 1: the word blessing when you talking about the pandemic. But
- 17:39Speaker 1: the pandemic did change the way we watched TV. You know,
- 17:42Speaker 1: stars were zooming in and they would becoming acceptable instead
- 17:46Speaker 1: of having to come into a studio, people understood. Okay,
- 17:49Speaker 1: I'm this is consumable to me. I'm enjoying this. This
- 17:52Speaker 1: is cool when you look at the whole thing. Was
- 17:55Speaker 1: the way that when the country got shut down, we
- 17:57Speaker 1: were we were affected by the endemic. Was that a
- 18:01Speaker 1: good thing from a programming standpoint? I know Netflix screams
- 18:05Speaker 1: about they numbers during the pandaemia were off the chain.
- 18:09Speaker 1: A lot of people said, online sales off the chain.
- 18:12Speaker 1: How what positive impact did it have on Foxhold? Um,
- 18:17Speaker 1: it really expanded the network. It allowed our footprint to
- 18:20Speaker 1: really go to a broader place because you didn't have
- 18:22Speaker 1: to be in led to be a part of the shows. Um,
- 18:25Speaker 1: you could doom them. So that way we were able
- 18:27Speaker 1: to get the most influential voices of the culture that
- 18:31Speaker 1: we could have. And it really worked. And so I
- 18:33Speaker 1: don't think wherever go back to being a traditional studio network.
- 18:38Speaker 1: If you will, there's gonna be some sort of a
- 18:40Speaker 1: hybrid because we still need to be able to reach
- 18:43Speaker 1: people no matter where they are. UM to be a
- 18:46Speaker 1: part of foxel We'll be right back with more Money
- 18:49Speaker 1: Making Conversations Masterclass with Rushan McDonald. Now, let's return to
- 18:55Speaker 1: Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rashan McDonald. Well, let's talk
- 19:00Speaker 1: about a little bit about your past, which is all good.
- 19:03Speaker 1: And I was teaching you all fair. You know, he's
- 19:05Speaker 1: a man. We look at his resume, y'all. You know
- 19:07Speaker 1: he got Phil Columns, he got Kevin Hall, he got
- 19:11Speaker 1: p Diddy. You know he got Keshia Cole. You know
- 19:15Speaker 1: all these just just name a few, because resume going
- 19:18Speaker 1: all the way back to nine Night and that. Okay,
- 19:20Speaker 1: so then it like it started last week. Okay. Now
- 19:24Speaker 1: that's a lot going on. There's a lot of star
- 19:26Speaker 1: power and a lot of diversity, a lot of different personalities.
- 19:30Speaker 1: How do you work those relationships plus doing reality shows?
- 19:34Speaker 1: At one time he used the King of the reality Shows.
- 19:36Speaker 1: So I mean, since you have a skill set of communication,
- 19:39Speaker 1: that's really vital to get for people to feel comfortable
- 19:43Speaker 1: around you, James, and also to trust you talk about that.
- 19:48Speaker 1: But you know, um as you know, relationships is extremely important,
- 19:52Speaker 1: and I think a part of just just my truth
- 19:55Speaker 1: a big part of the reality show success. I think
- 19:58Speaker 1: I've been blessed with a gift to just be a
- 20:00Speaker 1: great storytelling, but to also recognize things and people that
- 20:06Speaker 1: most of us want to know about. Um So, everybody.
- 20:09Speaker 1: If you look at all my most of my shows
- 20:11Speaker 1: in the reality space, from Keisha Code Tied Intoya Monica,
- 20:16Speaker 1: Trade or they were at a crossroads in their lives
- 20:20Speaker 1: and and and and what they were able to to
- 20:23Speaker 1: to trust me with was the fact that I built
- 20:27Speaker 1: a genuine relationship with them first and foremost. That I
- 20:29Speaker 1: wasn't here to sensualize their lives. Is that I wanted
- 20:32Speaker 1: to for them to entertain, but also educate and inspire
- 20:36Speaker 1: others that may be going through what they're going through.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Because I don't care who you are, how much money
- 20:40Speaker 1: you have, what your name is, you wake up every
- 20:42Speaker 1: day and fighting something. We have to fight something every day.
- 20:46Speaker 1: And so I tried to use that model UM in
- 20:48Speaker 1: a sense to tell you truth. Not only people will
- 20:50Speaker 1: respect that a lot more UM, but they would get
- 20:54Speaker 1: to know you a lot more than whatever other product
- 20:56Speaker 1: that you have. When this reality show goes away and
- 20:59Speaker 1: they can us go off and they do and they
- 21:01Speaker 1: do for everybody, you still want to have a brand
- 21:04Speaker 1: that people respect because you was honest and open with them.
- 21:06Speaker 1: And so that was really just my my conversation. But
- 21:10Speaker 1: a part of that UM rather just to be quite
- 21:13Speaker 1: frank a part of that too, because I saw a
- 21:15Speaker 1: lot of the pain that it was dealing with that
- 21:17Speaker 1: I was hot and from my own life. Um and
- 21:20Speaker 1: at the height of my success, I was probably at
- 21:24Speaker 1: the lowest point of my life um to to a
- 21:27Speaker 1: point where depression was like suicide and the whole thing.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Um and and and a beautiful sister who we both know,
- 21:37Speaker 1: Lorita Jones, um like save me like she called me
- 21:43Speaker 1: in the office one night and in October two thirteen
- 21:48Speaker 1: and and and in five minutes of the conversation she
- 21:50Speaker 1: basically said, I'm gonna send you to get help because
- 21:53Speaker 1: I'm not paying for your funeral. And so I say
- 21:55Speaker 1: that to say this is outside looking in assess. Is
- 22:00Speaker 1: one thing what I've learned through that process, and I
- 22:02Speaker 1: speak about this a lot, is I didn't have a
- 22:07Speaker 1: love for myself. I depended on the success. I depended
- 22:11Speaker 1: on the validation of everyone else. Um And that goes
- 22:15Speaker 1: back far not to get too deep into it. By entrepreneurship,
- 22:19Speaker 1: and the first business you have to learn to run
- 22:21Speaker 1: is you and you can never do that if you
- 22:23Speaker 1: don't have a real genuine love for yourself. And I
- 22:25Speaker 1: never had that. So when when the love stopped or
- 22:28Speaker 1: I had eventually your inner world create your out of
- 22:31Speaker 1: world and it would catch up to you. And I said,
- 22:33Speaker 1: and it's for anyone young that's listened to this, as
- 22:35Speaker 1: entrepreneurs that think money or success or been around certain
- 22:40Speaker 1: people's gonna it's gonna make you okay. It is not.
- 22:43Speaker 1: You gotta know how to be okay all by yourself,
- 22:46Speaker 1: to fulfill your love cup alone, and then when you
- 22:49Speaker 1: get it from other people, the business will be fine,
- 22:52Speaker 1: will continue. And I didn't have that. Unfortunately, I didn't
- 22:55Speaker 1: have people to talk to, or I didn't know how
- 22:57Speaker 1: to talk to. I tried to I end up instead
- 22:59Speaker 1: of build it on my success, I spent fifteen years
- 23:04Speaker 1: of my life living a lot trying to hide the
- 23:06Speaker 1: bay that I was in because I didn't know what
- 23:07Speaker 1: to say. So I really wanted to get that out
- 23:10Speaker 1: because but I do feel like the blessing of it all.
- 23:13Speaker 1: But it was everything I've been through an experience built
- 23:17Speaker 1: me to authentically build fox soul in what we're trying
- 23:20Speaker 1: to make absolutely my story was speaking absolutely. You know
- 23:23Speaker 1: I'm a piggyback that because success is really interesting. I
- 23:26Speaker 1: can remember when um, when I was with Steve Harvey.
- 23:29Speaker 1: You know, it was just backt like we was just
- 23:31Speaker 1: taking over the world. And it's something about being number
- 23:34Speaker 1: one because you gotta stay there. I always tell people
- 23:36Speaker 1: it's fun to climbing, but when you get there, that's
- 23:40Speaker 1: when you have to stay. And then there's a there's
- 23:42Speaker 1: a hidden pressure, sometimes self created, that you gotta be bad.
- 23:46Speaker 1: You don't he said something very key. I didn't know
- 23:49Speaker 1: who to talk to because it wasn't anybody like me
- 23:52Speaker 1: that I can go to. And it was the same
- 23:54Speaker 1: thing with him. And when he's still rocking the road.
- 23:56Speaker 1: Don't get me wrong, but one time when you said
- 23:59Speaker 1: black reality, so you said his name and you said
- 24:02Speaker 1: it a lot. And but who do you turn through?
- 24:05Speaker 1: Who do you trust? Who you show a sign of
- 24:08Speaker 1: weakness to? You know, all those things come into play
- 24:12Speaker 1: that would mentally drained you, and it did to me.
- 24:15Speaker 1: I just stepped back. I had to go. I gotta
- 24:19Speaker 1: step back. This is too much success can be too much.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Money is not the issue anymore. Is the relationships is
- 24:26Speaker 1: people you can call taking vacations, get off that little
- 24:31Speaker 1: that little will because something worried about it. If you
- 24:34Speaker 1: don't get off, it will be if you get back
- 24:36Speaker 1: on it that is so profound that you're saying that,
- 24:39Speaker 1: because it is very relatable to me. Because I didn't.
- 24:42Speaker 1: I felt victim to my own success because I couldn't trust.
- 24:46Speaker 1: I didn't have time for my family or they got
- 24:49Speaker 1: the money, they got the perks, but I never had time,
- 24:52Speaker 1: didn't celebrate the birthdays. I should have celebrated all those
- 24:55Speaker 1: if I went on vacation. I was kind of like
- 24:57Speaker 1: working real hard on my vacations. So what you're saying
- 25:01Speaker 1: is necessary, but it also lets you appreciate when people
- 25:06Speaker 1: are sick on the job. Family first, you know, I
- 25:08Speaker 1: want to go on vacation, take your days off, you know,
- 25:12Speaker 1: learn from my mistakes. I won't. I won't tie you
- 25:14Speaker 1: up like I tied tied your life up. That is
- 25:17Speaker 1: really important, And thank you for saying that. Man, I
- 25:19Speaker 1: wanted to pick you back and let you know I've
- 25:21Speaker 1: been there and I wan't allow myself to go back. No.
- 25:25Speaker 1: I appreciate you saying that. And you know, a big
- 25:28Speaker 1: part of it is actually speaking and talking about it,
- 25:30Speaker 1: so I don't go back there. But I've also learned
- 25:33Speaker 1: that that is actually strength and being involnerable. So I
- 25:37Speaker 1: appreciate you saying that and giving me um that validation
- 25:41Speaker 1: as well. But because sometimes you think you only one
- 25:43Speaker 1: in the world going through what you're going through at
- 25:45Speaker 1: that time, I would tell you, I mnuna just share
- 25:47Speaker 1: a story, man, it's a It's always this story I
- 25:49Speaker 1: always sits in my head. Was it was an employer.
- 25:51Speaker 1: I was a show I want name the show, and
- 25:54Speaker 1: she had planned a vacation and and I wouldn't later
- 25:58Speaker 1: take that vacation because I said, you take the vacation,
- 26:01Speaker 1: then you're gonna have the job when you come back.
- 26:03Speaker 1: And and and to this day, I regret that because I
- 26:08Speaker 1: know that that was a selfish move on my part
- 26:12Speaker 1: and I was more concerned about me than the people
- 26:15Speaker 1: around me. And so moving forward, since that always stays
- 26:18Speaker 1: in my head, I always listen to people. I always
- 26:21Speaker 1: understand that they are important, that their spirit, their soul,
- 26:25Speaker 1: their life is important, and I can't allow their lives
- 26:28Speaker 1: be consumed by my dreams. So so that's my take
- 26:32Speaker 1: on that. Because of the fact that you just hit
- 26:34Speaker 1: home with me when you started talking like that, I
- 26:36Speaker 1: just had to bring it out. No, I appreciate that
- 26:39Speaker 1: these are the conversations. I love it. That's why I'm
- 26:41Speaker 1: grateful for being what I also want to say as
- 26:44Speaker 1: we close out, James. First of all, thank you for
- 26:46Speaker 1: taking the time. I am an outlet for your for
- 26:49Speaker 1: your talent, and I say that with no strings attached.
- 26:53Speaker 1: My newsletter goes out. You can signed up. It goes
- 26:55Speaker 1: out every two two o'clock on the dot. It's just
- 26:58Speaker 1: standard time every Wednesday, six or six thousand plus and growing.
- 27:02Speaker 1: And that allows me to talk to my apologetic black
- 27:06Speaker 1: fan club members who I know will appreciate your unapologetic,
- 27:11Speaker 1: unapologetic streaming audiences into your home. That you know, man,
- 27:15Speaker 1: you're telling our story. And I know I have nothing
- 27:18Speaker 1: negative when I talk about BT or Revolte or you know,
- 27:22Speaker 1: uh TV one. But what you're doing, brother, we gotta
- 27:27Speaker 1: keep supporting it. Fox Soul is home, and I appreciate
- 27:30Speaker 1: you monitoring it and keeping the doors open for us. Man. No,
- 27:34Speaker 1: I appreciate you. Thank you for saying that, man, And
- 27:37Speaker 1: that's uh, let's figure out how to make that news.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Let it go, brother, Let's make it a win win.
- 27:40Speaker 1: Anything I can do to help that, that's that's what we.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Thank you, Jane for taking the time, and we're gonna
- 27:45Speaker 1: talk sooner. Brother. I appreciate thank you
