- 1:24Speaker 1: my next guest day on the phone. I love these
- 1:26Speaker 1: two people, brother and sister due of Jake and Jazz
- 1:29Speaker 1: Smolett are teaming up to transform the living, work and
- 1:33Speaker 1: play spaces of millennial families. That's that's that's right there.
- 1:37Speaker 1: I got a millennial if she's twenty one years old,
- 1:39Speaker 1: and so I got to hear this story out loud
- 1:42Speaker 1: and Cleo TV's new lifestyle series Living by Design with
- 1:46Speaker 1: Jake and Jazz. In this series, they create simple solutions
- 1:49Speaker 1: to everyday design the lemmas for aspiring millennial families. Please
- 1:54Speaker 1: welcome back to money making conversations. Jake and Jazz energized
- 2:04Speaker 1: this time Jake. You know what I'm saying last time time, Sean,
- 2:13Speaker 1: this is early on the West coast, this Los Angeles,
- 2:15Speaker 1: this early, it's early. Well you're the first of all.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I'm big fans and uh and when I heard about this,
- 2:23Speaker 1: h this millennial show, I like, I said, I got
- 2:26Speaker 1: a twenty one year old okay, and she got she
- 2:29Speaker 1: got ideas. She doesn't have a she doesn't have a
- 2:31Speaker 1: TV show, even want the TV. And she looks at
- 2:34Speaker 1: everything on her phone and uh, you know, she she
- 2:37Speaker 1: has her own sense of what she wants to be.
- 2:39Speaker 1: She lives on campus now and then she's back home
- 2:42Speaker 1: for the summer because she's taking summer classes. So when
- 2:44Speaker 1: you say the word millennial, what age group are you
- 2:46Speaker 1: looking at in that range you're focusing on your show?
- 2:52Speaker 1: I have believe millennial. Now, like some of the younger
- 2:56Speaker 1: kids are technically Gen V or something. Um, you might
- 3:00Speaker 1: have a gen weird. I don't know, you know how
- 3:03Speaker 1: they start drawing the line. But I think like a
- 3:08Speaker 1: lot of the people that you're working with are like
- 3:11Speaker 1: mid twenties and their thirties. I think like there, yeah,
- 3:17Speaker 1: and they have like their apartments and they're you know,
- 3:20Speaker 1: or they have a young family, or they're expecting a family,
- 3:23Speaker 1: or they're single and just started their career, just took
- 3:27Speaker 1: a shift in their careers or things like that. Yeah,
- 3:30Speaker 1: that's about right, because you know it goes from eighteen
- 3:33Speaker 1: to thirty four. That's that that age range. Yeah, you're
- 3:37Speaker 1: hit you're hitting that out of college. They got bills
- 3:40Speaker 1: coming their way, they got trouble coming their way, right, right,
- 3:46Speaker 1: So so this idea okay because each one you have
- 3:50Speaker 1: special skills and your brother and sisters. So we all
- 3:53Speaker 1: know I have six sisters and have two brothers, so
- 3:55Speaker 1: you know, we don't always agree. I think that's a
- 3:57Speaker 1: great dynamic to have in the show. Tell me how
- 4:00Speaker 1: the role plays out for you too. On this show,
- 4:04Speaker 1: we found a good way to split up the work
- 4:08Speaker 1: so we do have our individual skills and to not
- 4:12Speaker 1: overlap too much. But um, when it comes down to it,
- 4:16Speaker 1: I'm the box and so that's how it works out
- 4:18Speaker 1: really well. I am the older one, so you know,
- 4:24Speaker 1: just kidding. But the way that we do it is
- 4:27Speaker 1: that we do a reveal meal at the end. Jake
- 4:31Speaker 1: does a I do a design and a dessert. For
- 4:34Speaker 1: my focus is the overall design of the space and
- 4:36Speaker 1: making a dessert for the reveal party. And Jake's focus
- 4:40Speaker 1: is a build and a meal, so he makes the
- 4:42Speaker 1: main course and he also builds a custom peace for
- 4:46Speaker 1: um for eating fix that we're doing, or he refurbishes
- 4:51Speaker 1: a piece. Okay, cool, now dessert, you hit my you
- 4:53Speaker 1: hit my home run list right there. Now, is any
- 4:56Speaker 1: desserts from your book the Family Table? Or these are
- 4:59Speaker 1: just desserts a the outside of that book, there was
- 5:01Speaker 1: People by the Way, I recommend that's my favorite book.
- 5:04Speaker 1: That's how I met this this family here was through
- 5:06Speaker 1: the book. Now you talk about desserts. I was asking you,
- 5:09Speaker 1: is any or any of these desserts in the Family
- 5:12Speaker 1: Table book? Some of them are, and then some of
- 5:16Speaker 1: them are new ones I've developed or ones I've had
- 5:19Speaker 1: from before. Um, I love making desserts. So there's a
- 5:22Speaker 1: lot of different stuff there. We have sixteen different episodes,
- 5:26Speaker 1: so a few of the episodes have desserts from the
- 5:28Speaker 1: Family Table. I think the one that just aired, the
- 5:32Speaker 1: one that just aired, yes, that's in the Family Table.
- 5:35Speaker 1: It was a chocolate uh, flowerless chocolate cake. Have tried that? Yes?
- 5:40Speaker 1: Oh yes, yes, A real chocoholic. My wife loves chocolate.
- 5:45Speaker 1: She loves chocolate. I don't like chocolate people, but she
- 5:47Speaker 1: loves chocolate. Make her that cake, just for no reason,
- 5:53Speaker 1: make her that cake because see this, just see this past.
- 5:55Speaker 1: You know, when he was on the show last I
- 5:57Speaker 1: will talk about I bade that which I love the
- 5:59Speaker 1: lost role. You know, I grew a lobster row. My
- 6:01Speaker 1: favorite sandwiches. They're awesome. Now my wife, she came up
- 6:06Speaker 1: two weeks ago. A week ago, she came in right
- 6:08Speaker 1: before we went on our cruise. She said, what do
- 6:11Speaker 1: you want? I said, well, can you make me some gumbo?
- 6:13Speaker 1: She said on hiversary and say, hey, hey, hey, the
- 6:15Speaker 1: family table. Want to go around the corner to the
- 6:22Speaker 1: family Tad was sitting on the counter. So she going there,
- 6:24Speaker 1: you know, and so I so you know, I'm I'm country.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Now you know I might be a successful financial last dear,
- 6:32Speaker 1: take my lunches to work. I like real home launches.
- 6:35Speaker 1: And so she made me a gumbo. So so I
- 6:38Speaker 1: had my corn bread, I had my white rise, and
- 6:40Speaker 1: I was taking my gumbo to work on two days
- 6:42Speaker 1: in a row. Took my gumbould work. Then then my
- 6:45Speaker 1: wife from the look, I just sent my free schoolers
- 6:48Speaker 1: to school with chi I'm saying what I'm saying that,
- 6:53Speaker 1: but this is my wife will freeze everything. She free everything,
- 6:57Speaker 1: freeze everything. Okay, so of course she went, I told
- 7:00Speaker 1: my daughter, please don't make sure when I died, my
- 7:02Speaker 1: my wife freeze me. Don't freeze me. Don't freeze me.
- 7:04Speaker 1: And so, uh, that's a commitment that's in my will.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Do not freeze me, because she freezes everything. And so
- 7:09Speaker 1: I come back. I come back from the cruise in Alaska.
- 7:13Speaker 1: You freeze everything. And so I come back from the
- 7:14Speaker 1: cruise in Alaska. And so I said, I'm hungry. She said,
- 7:19Speaker 1: I got some gumbo, said I frozen. Bro I was
- 7:26Speaker 1: one dollars happy. She froze some food, and I met
- 7:29Speaker 1: some practice a white rice and it thought out that
- 7:32Speaker 1: gumbo and the microwave boys, Oh my gosh, happened with
- 7:40Speaker 1: my phone. Well, I'm just man, we've been talking about
- 7:44Speaker 1: this gumbo that my wife froze. That when she unfrozen,
- 7:48Speaker 1: it was taste better than when the first time she
- 7:50Speaker 1: gave it to me. Live, man, I'm out the family table.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Fad out the family table. Now, it's the funny point
- 7:57Speaker 1: before before you got caught off there, sir, she was
- 8:01Speaker 1: talking about how she was running things. She was the
- 8:04Speaker 1: oldest and you gave that a little lad and she
- 8:13Speaker 1: told me that, uh the episode that just aired, she
- 8:16Speaker 1: you know they the chocolate flower with this cake. Correct,
- 8:20Speaker 1: that was the episode that just recently aired. Because she
- 8:23Speaker 1: doesn't she doesn't desert. Yeah, and so she gum pasta.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Let me tell you somebody, these two people in this phone, um,
- 8:37Speaker 1: they know how to cook. So you know, come time
- 8:40Speaker 1: to tell you. So I get a lot of interview
- 8:41Speaker 1: a lot of cooks. I actually get a lot of
- 8:44Speaker 1: cookbooks on the show. And see I'm one of the people.
- 8:47Speaker 1: I actually you know, I'm a baker or War winning baker.
- 8:50Speaker 1: And I'm also a homegrown cooker from the South Houston, Texas,
- 8:53Speaker 1: you know, Fifth War neighborhood boy, so little Louise out
- 8:57Speaker 1: in my background. So so I know how to throw down.
- 9:01Speaker 1: So so when books come my way, and this is
- 9:04Speaker 1: just just being honest and about what they have in
- 9:07Speaker 1: that book, it's a very easy book. We're talking about
- 9:10Speaker 1: the family table. The family table. The entire family isn't
- 9:13Speaker 1: on the cover, and uh it's easy, and so it's
- 9:16Speaker 1: it's uh the food is uh diverse. When I'm talking
- 9:20Speaker 1: about it's just a range of different items. The desserts
- 9:23Speaker 1: are easy to make, and it's one of my favorite books.
- 9:27Speaker 1: And I just want to let everybody know that I
- 9:31Speaker 1: my wife uses it and uh, I let my daughter
- 9:33Speaker 1: cook out of it. And so it's a family experience.
- 9:36Speaker 1: And that's why I like it because anybody in my family,
- 9:40Speaker 1: everybody my family has experienced cooking from that book. And
- 9:44Speaker 1: it's called The Family Table. And you guys have done
- 9:45Speaker 1: a tremendous job on putting that book together. No, I'm
- 9:49Speaker 1: just being real, And so we're gonna come back for
- 9:51Speaker 1: the next break. When you was off, I was talking
- 9:52Speaker 1: to every about the TV show Jake. When you come back,
- 9:55Speaker 1: I want to get your feedback on in the dessert
- 9:57Speaker 1: and she said, sixty episodes. Then y'all busy Steen episodes
- 10:00Speaker 1: with millennials do business. We were back with more money
- 10:03Speaker 1: making conversation with my my favorite, my favorite brother sister
- 10:06Speaker 1: to duo. She older, he younger. They both looked good.
- 10:09Speaker 1: How are you listening to money making conversations? And uh,
- 10:12Speaker 1: we're talking to the brother and sister duo of Jazz
- 10:15Speaker 1: and Jake Smolett. It teamed up to transform the living,
- 10:18Speaker 1: work and play spaces of millennial families and Cleo TVs
- 10:22Speaker 1: new lifestyle series Living by Design with Jazz and Jake.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Now this show, I'm sure just was this an idea
- 10:28Speaker 1: that that you guys developed or was brought to you?
- 10:32Speaker 1: It was actually brought to us. We were promoting the
- 10:35Speaker 1: cookbook and m Rochelle Brown, we were doing another show
- 10:40Speaker 1: and uh, Rochelle Brown from Powerhouse and that's approach us
- 10:43Speaker 1: to do UM the show. And she just came in
- 10:46Speaker 1: our dressing room and said that she has this really
- 10:49Speaker 1: fantastic concept UM that she just sold the Clear TV
- 10:54Speaker 1: and it involves cooking and design UM. And so I
- 10:59Speaker 1: was right up our Ali and you know, we jumped
- 11:02Speaker 1: at the opportunity and shop the sixteen episodes and it
- 11:06Speaker 1: was really really, really a ridiculous I'm out of fun
- 11:11Speaker 1: student the show, right. And it's been a really great
- 11:14Speaker 1: creative outlet because we are really involved creatively and then
- 11:17Speaker 1: the development process UM once the show was taking more forms.
- 11:22Speaker 1: So it's been it's been really fun to be so
- 11:25Speaker 1: closely involved with them. They're so great, they're so collaborative
- 11:30Speaker 1: and UM they had a really good a really a
- 11:33Speaker 1: really strong concept and a really strong concept concept of
- 11:36Speaker 1: what they wanted to do with this show and where
- 11:39Speaker 1: it would go. I love both those ladies. So you're
- 11:43Speaker 1: you're you're working with sperius minds of the business of
- 11:48Speaker 1: how to get done. So here's the thing about it
- 11:50Speaker 1: is that I'm a big fan of these um you know,
- 11:53Speaker 1: these are doing yourself shows and things like that, and
- 11:56Speaker 1: when you watch them, then I'm just happy that we're
- 11:58Speaker 1: starting to see the African American relate ship being being
- 12:01Speaker 1: portrayed and being on a regular basis, because it seems
- 12:04Speaker 1: like we don't we don't go to home depot, or
- 12:07Speaker 1: we don't cook our own meals, or we only cook
- 12:09Speaker 1: a certain type of meal. That's why I always push
- 12:11Speaker 1: people to at least look at your book, because if
- 12:15Speaker 1: you look at their book family table, you'll see that
- 12:18Speaker 1: it's it's not you know, we get thrown into that
- 12:20Speaker 1: soul food category or a lot you know, and we
- 12:23Speaker 1: just break a certain type of Like you said, your dessert,
- 12:26Speaker 1: your run of desserts is incredible. You're running the appetizers, sandwiches, uh,
- 12:32Speaker 1: the dinners. It's all broken up in different categories and
- 12:35Speaker 1: it really it's fun to hear you guys and see
- 12:38Speaker 1: you guys work because I get to see you know,
- 12:39Speaker 1: you know Jake Smooth on TV. You know, I'll be
- 12:42Speaker 1: looking at him going, man, you just he's just a
- 12:44Speaker 1: player with that food and ain't you brother, because he's
- 12:46Speaker 1: just because he's a spook. If he's smooth. What you're
- 12:54Speaker 1: about to tell? What you're saying, what you're gonna say? Yes?
- 12:57Speaker 1: Oh no, sorry, no, I was just saying, yeah, you're right.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Often does not get especially in lifestyle. But we as
- 13:05Speaker 1: a people are lifestyle. We this is what we do.
- 13:08Speaker 1: We celebrate, We celebrate with our families, We celebrate with
- 13:10Speaker 1: our friends. Our homes are open. We you know, we entertain,
- 13:15Speaker 1: we party, we throw down like we you know, that's
- 13:19Speaker 1: what we do. That's what we've always done. It's always
- 13:21Speaker 1: been there. It's it's just what you know, who's making
- 13:25Speaker 1: decisions as to what's portrayed. And so it's really nice
- 13:28Speaker 1: to be part of a network like CLEO who's trying
- 13:31Speaker 1: to really showcase our lifestyle experiences, um, you know, for
- 13:38Speaker 1: us and for everyone else to see. You know, it's
- 13:41Speaker 1: just we've always been here space, but it's definitely something
- 13:48Speaker 1: that we're excited to showcase more of and bring as
- 13:52Speaker 1: a people, our passions and our culture and our legacy.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Do that's awesome. Now let me let me let's talk
- 13:57Speaker 1: about the show. Okay, I'd like say, you know, Um,
- 14:00Speaker 1: Jake was cut off when I started going too detail
- 14:02Speaker 1: about the show. You gave me a little set up. So, Jake,
- 14:05Speaker 1: you said, this is an amazing experience. It was an
- 14:07Speaker 1: amazing experience because of the age group that you were
- 14:10Speaker 1: working with and how they reacted. Because I'm sure each
- 14:13Speaker 1: episode you worked on a budget. Was it the same
- 14:15Speaker 1: budget per episode? Um? It pretty much is the same
- 14:20Speaker 1: budget per episodes. Um. We had a lot of fun
- 14:25Speaker 1: just because Daz and I got to work together again, um,
- 14:28Speaker 1: and we always have fun doing projects. But also the crew,
- 14:33Speaker 1: you know, and the guests and does everything worked together
- 14:38Speaker 1: to make a really great, great production and you know,
- 14:44Speaker 1: everybody we got to work with so many different influencers
- 14:48Speaker 1: and just so many amazing women who were just on
- 14:51Speaker 1: the go grinding doing their things and just haven't had
- 14:55Speaker 1: the time to redesign their face and getting to hear
- 14:59Speaker 1: these inspiring story and everything. It all just played into
- 15:05Speaker 1: a really really great experience. So we're just grateful to
- 15:10Speaker 1: be able to be be able to you know, spread
- 15:12Speaker 1: love and do this show sixteen episodes. It was really
- 15:18Speaker 1: really really great. That's awesome. Now when you're doing these
- 15:20Speaker 1: type of shows, I would tell people that they're basically
- 15:22Speaker 1: glorified commercials for your brand. What what is the What
- 15:26Speaker 1: is your brand? Jake and Jah, What is your brain?
- 15:30Speaker 1: My brand is food and home. Um. I I have
- 15:35Speaker 1: a passion for building furniture and woodworking and stuff like that.
- 15:39Speaker 1: But I also have a passion for uh, cooking and
- 15:43Speaker 1: being a home chefs and really really honing in on
- 15:47Speaker 1: that craft and stuff cooking my whole life um our mom,
- 15:52Speaker 1: as you might know, it's from New Orleans. We talked
- 15:54Speaker 1: about that in the book a lot. So she made
- 15:58Speaker 1: food really sensitive. Um. And she also built furnace here.
- 16:03Speaker 1: So that's where I learned how to see that both
- 16:06Speaker 1: the majority of my skills come from my mom and um,
- 16:10Speaker 1: I've just kept it up and really really enjoy doing
- 16:14Speaker 1: it as an adult who like even in my house
- 16:16Speaker 1: everything all the wood, furniture, my bed, my table, I
- 16:21Speaker 1: built youlo. Um. So my brand is really I'm focusing
- 16:26Speaker 1: on food and homer then cool your term days, Yes,
- 16:33Speaker 1: so mine is everything lifestyle and celebration. So um just
- 16:38Speaker 1: bringing out, you know, everything about celebrating life, and with
- 16:43Speaker 1: this show, it's creating your home as a sanctuary, um
- 16:47Speaker 1: and really bringing your personality into all all things style
- 16:51Speaker 1: and everything that you do. So really showcasingly in each
- 16:55Speaker 1: individual is is what's been really great about this show.
- 16:58Speaker 1: And I'm a mom with a four year daughter and
- 17:01Speaker 1: so like there's a lot of um, you know, motherhood
- 17:06Speaker 1: that goes and naturally as well what's really important as
- 17:10Speaker 1: working as a team. I'm talking to uh, Jake and
- 17:13Speaker 1: Jazz at there's the stars of new show Living by
- 17:16Speaker 1: Design that airs on Cleo TV every noon every on Saturday,
- 17:21Speaker 1: every Saturday noontime. They've taped sixteen episodes. Now I always
- 17:25Speaker 1: tell people when you do that many episodes, there's there's
- 17:28Speaker 1: there's your favorite and so I'm not saying both of
- 17:31Speaker 1: you have the same favorite episode, but what episode really
- 17:34Speaker 1: say Wow? That that that that this is why I
- 17:37Speaker 1: do what I do. Starting with you, Jake. One of
- 17:42Speaker 1: my favorites was a newly wed couples um Lisa and
- 17:47Speaker 1: Tyler and they've been together for ten years and there's
- 17:52Speaker 1: twenty seven and nine so high school sweetheart, Um, they
- 17:57Speaker 1: finally got their own place you just proposed to her,
- 18:00Speaker 1: and he comes from living with roommates and she comes
- 18:02Speaker 1: from living with family. So it was nice, you know,
- 18:07Speaker 1: a young black couple starting out, uh and get to
- 18:13Speaker 1: see them really get all the things they needed more
- 18:15Speaker 1: it right, and it really has this bohemian vibe and
- 18:20Speaker 1: God really really kills that design. And that was a
- 18:23Speaker 1: really really fun one. So that's one of my favorite.
- 18:26Speaker 1: But I mean, yeah, when you do sixteen, you have
- 18:28Speaker 1: a relationship with all the absolutely, absolutely absolutely. But you know,
- 18:32Speaker 1: like I say, I've done production and I know certain
- 18:34Speaker 1: things are certain scripts, I've written, a certain actors, I've met,
- 18:38Speaker 1: a certain everything has I always tell people each story
- 18:42Speaker 1: is like a child, you know, you the script birth sait,
- 18:45Speaker 1: the production grows it in the editing, in the editing
