- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. And when you're ready, let's
- 0:30dive into God's Word together. Acts chapter 12 begins with more
- 0:45fierce persecution of the church.
- 0:47This time it's King Herod who is at the helm.
- 0:50We see him in the first few verses of this chapter laying
- 0:52hands on church members in order to mistreat them.
- 0:55Then he puts to death James the brother of John.
- 0:58This is James the son of Zebedee, one of the sons of
- 1:00Thunder, who is in Jesus inner circle, the first of the 11
- 1:04faithful disciples to be martyred for the faith.
- 1:07After James's death, Herod is emboldened in his persecution of
- 1:09the church by the Jews who were pleased to see James's death.
- 1:13And so next Herod had Peter arrested and thrown into prison.
- 1:17Here's where I want us to pick up the story as we see God at
- 1:19work in and through his people. Listen along, starting in verse
- 1:225. So Peter was kept in prison, but
- 1:25prayer for him was being made fervently by the church to God.
- 1:29On the very night when Herod was about to bring him forward,
- 1:31Peter was sleeping between two soldiers bound with two chains,
- 1:35and guards in front of the door were watching over the prison.
- 1:38And behold, an Angel of the Lord suddenly appeared, and a light
- 1:42shone in the cell. And he struck Peter's side and
- 1:44woke him up, saying, Get up quickly.
- 1:47And his chains fell off his hands.
- 1:49And the Angel said to him, Gird yourself and put on your
- 1:51sandals. And he did so.
- 1:53And he said to him, Wrap your cloak around you, and follow me.
- 1:56And he went out and continued to follow.
- 1:58And he did not know that what was being done by the Angel was
- 2:00real, but thought he was seeing a vision.
- 2:03When he had passed the 1st and 2nd guard, they came to the iron
- 2:06gate that leads into the city, which opened for them by itself.
- 2:10And they went out and went along. 1 St.
- 2:13And immediately the Angel departed from him.
- 2:15When Peter came to himself, he said, Now I know for sure that
- 2:18the Lord has sent forth his Angel and rescued me from the
- 2:20hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were
- 2:22expecting. And when he realized this, he
- 2:24went to the House of Mary, the mother of John, who was also
- 2:27called Mark, where many were gathered together and were
- 2:29praying. When he knocked at the door of
- 2:31the gate, a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer.
- 2:34When she recognized Peter's voice because of her joy, she
- 2:36did not open the gate, but ran in and announced that Peter was
- 2:39standing in front of the gate. They said to her, You're out of
- 2:42your mind. But she kept insisting that it
- 2:44was so. They kept saying, It is his
- 2:46Angel. But Peter continued knocking.
- 2:49And when they had opened the door they saw him and were
- 2:51amazed. But motioning to them with his
- 2:53hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had led him
- 2:56out of the prison. And he said, Report these things
- 2:58to James and the brethren. Then he left and went to another
- 3:01place. What a wild story.
- 3:04But here's what you cannot miss. First, notice the posture of
- 3:08God's people in this time of trouble.
- 3:10James is dead, Christians are being persecuted, and Peter, one
- 3:13of the leaders of the church, has just been arrested.
- 3:16So what do the believers do? They pray.
- 3:19What else can they do but appeal to an authority higher than
- 3:22Herod, higher than Caesar himself, the almighty God of the
- 3:26universe? So we see this posture of prayer
- 3:29from God's people. But don't miss the second truth,
- 3:32the power of God. God is not thrown off by James's
- 3:35death nor by Peter's imprisonment.
- 3:38He is working all of it together for his glory and for the good
- 3:41of his people. And how he does that here is so
- 3:44striking. An Angel of the Lord literally
- 3:46nudges Peter awake, causes his chains to fall off his hands,
- 3:50and walks him out of the prison, past two guards, and through an
- 3:53iron gate which, Oh yeah, just swung open for him.
- 3:56This is the power of our God. And he was delighted.
- 3:59He was pleased to do all of that at the very time that the church
- 4:03was fervently praying for Peter. And in the end, God works a
- 4:07miracle. Peter is set free, and the
- 4:09church is encouraged by Peter's freedom, and especially by a God
- 4:12who hears and answers the prayer of his people.
- 4:16One pastor has often put it this way.
- 4:18God's got the whole thing rigged, and he does.
- 4:21We serve a God who has never once been caught off guard,
- 4:24never once been taken by surprise, a King to whom belongs
- 4:28all power and authority, a loving Father who loves to
- 4:31listen and to respond to the prayers of his children.
