- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In Mark chapter 3, we again see
- 0:46Jesus on the move. This time he is heading into the
- 0:49synagogue where he meets a man with a withered hand.
- 0:52Mark then tells us that there is a group of Pharisees keeping a
- 0:55close eye on Jesus. That is certainly a common
- 0:58occurrence in the Gospels, but look at the reason they're
- 1:01watching Jesus. Verse 2 says they were watching
- 1:05him to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath so that they
- 1:08might accuse him. Now understand what's happening
- 1:10here. These Pharisees have no doubts
- 1:13about Jesus ability to heal. They're confident that he has
- 1:16the power. But instead of listening to his
- 1:19teaching or trying to learn where that power came from, they
- 1:23instead watched to see if he might use that power in a way
- 1:26that did not align with their traditions or their
- 1:29understanding of God's law. And why did they care so much?
- 1:32What were they hoping to gain? They were trying to accuse Him.
- 1:37In the very next verse, Jesus calls forward the man with the
- 1:39withered hand. He sees the confrontation
- 1:42brewing. And he's going to use this
- 1:43opportunity not just to heal a handicapped man, but also to
- 1:47teach the Pharisees about God's way.
- 1:50He says in verse 4, Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the
- 1:54Sabbath? To save a life or to kill?
- 1:58At this, the Pharisees are silent, and Jesus proceeds to
- 2:01heal the man with the withered hand.
- 2:03The text tells us that Jesus looked at these Pharisees with
- 2:06anger and was grieved at their hardness of heart.
- 2:10Think about what's happening here.
- 2:11Here's a man in need, a man who has likely been unable to work,
- 2:15unable to function normally in society, and where does he go
- 2:18for help? He goes to the synagogue.
- 2:21But the very religious leaders who he would turn to for help,
- 2:25rather than see his need, rather than weep with him, rather than
- 2:28pray for him, use him as a chess piece in their plot to get rid
- 2:32of this threat to their power. Jesus, Jesus, God himself in
- 2:37human form, the very one who gave the law and instituted the
- 2:40Sabbath, keeps the Sabbath perfectly by healing this
- 2:43hurting, broken man. Meanwhile, the Pharisees have
- 2:47hearts so hard that they're unable to weep with a
- 2:50handicapped man, or even to rejoice when he's miraculously
- 2:53healed by Jesus. They cannot see past their own
- 2:56little Kingdom that they've built on the sand and as a
- 2:59result, they are missing the Kingdom of God breaking through
- 3:02in their midst. But friends, this mindset is not
- 3:06just limited to the Pharisees in Jesus day.
- 3:08It's so easy to draw dividing lines, to miss God's power
- 3:12poured out because we don't like the style or the format or the
- 3:16delivery. It's all too easy to build our
- 3:18own, even religious Kingdom and shut the gates so tightly that
- 3:22that we miss what God is doing in the world.
- 3:25Don't miss it today. Ask the Holy Spirit to root out
- 3:28cynicism and hardness of heart in your life today.
- 3:31Ask Him to help you. Weep with those who weep and
- 3:34rejoice with those who rejoice, even if it might make you
- 3:37uncomfortable.
