- 0:00Speaker 1: The next two people that have on the phone on
- 0:02Speaker 1: the phone, they're on the phone together because I've known
- 0:04Speaker 1: them for a long time. I find out one person
- 0:07Speaker 1: with being in of you, actually I got to have
- 0:09Speaker 1: the other girl on the phone because they both are
- 0:12Speaker 1: very special and they definitely wanted to speak to him simultaneously.
- 0:15Speaker 1: My next guest is a producer, actor, and director. She
- 0:18Speaker 1: has been honored with three a CP Image Awards for
- 0:22Speaker 1: work on The Steve Harvey Show. Not only has she
- 0:25Speaker 1: starred in several independent features, but she's also produced over
- 0:28Speaker 1: sixteen projects under her independent production company, Nina Holiday Entertainment,
- 0:33Speaker 1: with her producing partner cast Seekers Beatles. Please welcome to
- 0:37Speaker 1: money making conversation, both of them, Terry Jay Vaughn and
- 0:40Speaker 1: cast Seekers Beatles. But you know we're great. First of all,
- 0:48Speaker 1: thank you because of the fact that you know, in
- 0:51Speaker 1: this business you have to have I would tell people
- 0:55Speaker 1: multiple levels of income options, you know, whatever you want
- 0:59Speaker 1: to say it, because there's no guarantee that the path
- 1:01Speaker 1: that you're it could be cut off through the age
- 1:04Speaker 1: to be cut off, through the fact that they you
- 1:06Speaker 1: can get Taykak and be cut off, through the fact
- 1:08Speaker 1: that people say, hey, we're going in a different direction.
- 1:11Speaker 1: So what do you do when somebody says that, well,
- 1:14Speaker 1: you you you study your craft, you understand your craft,
- 1:17Speaker 1: and also you surround yourself with individuals who have like
- 1:20Speaker 1: minded of mentality about what you're trying to do with
- 1:24Speaker 1: your life. And that's what you guys to have done right.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Cast and Tear J definitely, UM. You know, you know
- 1:33Speaker 1: me for a very long time when I was you know,
- 1:36Speaker 1: I got my big break on the Steve Harvey Show.
- 1:39Speaker 1: And I say big break because I had been studying
- 1:42Speaker 1: and auditioning for a while before I ever landed that role.
- 1:47Speaker 1: But that is definitely the role that UM catapulted and
- 1:51Speaker 1: made people know who I was. UM. So, you know,
- 1:56Speaker 1: just spending all those years being an actress, you know,
- 2:00Speaker 1: showing up, auditioning and basically, you know, you do your
- 2:04Speaker 1: side of the job, which is to do the work,
- 2:07Speaker 1: to study the craft, to know the character and all that,
- 2:11Speaker 1: but you are not in control if somebody hired you
- 2:14Speaker 1: or time. And you know, that's cool when I was
- 2:18Speaker 1: in my twenties and early thirties, but at some point
- 2:22Speaker 1: I felt and I knew that I could not leave
- 2:25Speaker 1: my employment in the hands of other people. UM, and
- 2:30Speaker 1: you know this, this is very subjective. So you know,
- 2:34Speaker 1: I've always been business minded. And you know, when we
- 2:36Speaker 1: were on the Steve Harvey Show, Rajan, I would always
- 2:39Speaker 1: like hang around, ask questions. I talked to you guys
- 2:42Speaker 1: about money a lot about investing. Um. I was always
- 2:46Speaker 1: trying to well, can I write a script? Can I
- 2:48Speaker 1: do this? So I was always trying to take control
- 2:51Speaker 1: in some kind of way. And thank god I met
- 2:55Speaker 1: my soulmate in business, um miss miss prolific writer. Prolific writer. Okay, yes, yes,
- 3:06Speaker 1: And I kind of just drug her into this side
- 3:08Speaker 1: of the business because you know, cast started off as
- 3:10Speaker 1: a novelist novel but they were so fantastic. I was like, oh,
- 3:15Speaker 1: deep be turned into the TV shows. He's like okay,
- 3:20Speaker 1: And we kind of have been together ever since, just
- 3:23Speaker 1: trying to carve out our own niche make our own way.
- 3:26Speaker 1: And we've been you know, rocking and rolling together for
- 3:30Speaker 1: over fourteen years now something like that, like fourteen things
- 3:33Speaker 1: been about fourteen, Yeah, you really had one kid. We
- 3:37Speaker 1: really had one kid between us and now now we
- 3:39Speaker 1: have five. Yeah, now we have five and now we
- 3:44Speaker 1: have four husbands between us. Started off with and then
- 3:49Speaker 1: I'm sick. Now told you I'm sick. You gotta be
- 3:53Speaker 1: laughing over here. You gotta stop stop stop stop, Okay, okay,
- 4:01Speaker 1: let me let me. You need to shut up, Ferry Jake,
- 4:03Speaker 1: now cast I be quiet. Let's talk about you know.
- 4:08Speaker 1: You know it's always I would tell you know, it's
- 4:10Speaker 1: she says, there's always that unknown person that's out there
- 4:13Speaker 1: just grinding. You did so many Hoodie awards with me,
- 4:16Speaker 1: you know, and and from a DUCTR standpoint, and you
- 4:20Speaker 1: was always he was always there, you know, it was
- 4:24Speaker 1: it was always cool whenever would from a person to
- 4:27Speaker 1: under standpoint talk about your your your your your ability
- 4:30Speaker 1: to your talents as a writer. Before I get back
- 4:32Speaker 1: to me this funny, ladies, I am a natural storyteller. Well,
- 4:36Speaker 1: I have to say, honestly, watching you, um you have
- 4:39Speaker 1: You've been such an inspiration. I would tell Terry all
- 4:42Speaker 1: the time when we would come back from the Neighborhood Awards.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I'm like, man that Shawan like he just makes things happen.
- 4:47Speaker 1: And I remember having a specific conversation with you because
- 4:50Speaker 1: I'm an artist, I'm a storyteller to my heart, um,
- 4:53Speaker 1: and I have over the years learned to become a businesswoman,
- 4:56Speaker 1: but watching you and having that conversation with you one
- 4:59Speaker 1: day in the middle of something. I don't know what
- 5:02Speaker 1: we were talking about, but you stopped me here like
- 5:04Speaker 1: does this have anything to do with money? And I'm like,
- 5:07Speaker 1: uh No, I don't think so, Rashawn, and you were like, look,
- 5:10Speaker 1: let me tell you when all conversations happened. They need
- 5:14Speaker 1: to be doing something with money. They need to be
- 5:16Speaker 1: going towards the money. They need be going towards the
- 5:17Speaker 1: finish line. And I at first was like, man, that's
- 5:20Speaker 1: not like okay, so you can't have regular conversations. But
- 5:23Speaker 1: I understood exactly what you were saying, and I took
- 5:26Speaker 1: that to heart. So I thank you for being candid
- 5:28Speaker 1: and being very honest with me because we took that.
- 5:31Speaker 1: I took that back to Terry and I remember telling
- 5:33Speaker 1: her and I'm like, and that's how we're gonna do
- 5:35Speaker 1: our conversations for Shawn said, conversations need to be going
- 5:37Speaker 1: towards the finished a lot of money. They need to
- 5:39Speaker 1: be heading towards the finished lot of business. That's how
- 5:41Speaker 1: we need to handle our business. So I just had
- 5:43Speaker 1: to say that before I talked about being a storyteller,
- 5:47Speaker 1: just thank you for always being honest and about that.
- 5:52Speaker 1: I can't tell you how many guests a couple of
- 5:54Speaker 1: the show said that and said that about me. I
- 5:58Speaker 1: don't think that's good, but it changes people's perspective, especially
- 6:04Speaker 1: sometimes in the African American community, we don't have those conversations.
- 6:08Speaker 1: So to have that conversation and for you to say that, UM,
- 6:11Speaker 1: it does me a lot. And so it touches people,
- 6:13Speaker 1: and it makes people change the way that they think,
- 6:15Speaker 1: which ultimately helps their business. So you know, that's just
- 6:19Speaker 1: kudos to you for that. But yes, Terry drives me
- 6:22Speaker 1: along in this business. I was very consent being a nice,
- 6:25Speaker 1: little quiet novel writer in a cabin somewhere. UM, I
- 6:29Speaker 1: wouldn't have I wouldn't have it any other way. But
- 6:31Speaker 1: I am a natural storyteller, and I just loved the right.
- 6:34Speaker 1: I loved right. I'm very blessed and thankful that, UM,
- 6:37Speaker 1: I have an amazing community where the words can actually
- 6:40Speaker 1: get out of my head and actually move forward and
- 6:42Speaker 1: turned into something aside from words. UM. But it's just
- 6:47Speaker 1: I was put here to write. I was. I know
- 6:50Speaker 1: that I know the conversations I have with God, I
- 6:52Speaker 1: know that that's what I was put here to do.
- 6:54Speaker 1: So I'm just trying to be obedient and create good
- 6:57Speaker 1: stories that people can be inspired. Heard from watching cool
- 7:01Speaker 1: let me let me she's amazing. She's amazing. I get
- 7:05Speaker 1: that all the time about myself and money, and I
- 7:08Speaker 1: tried to I don't tell people this. You know, when
- 7:10Speaker 1: people call me, they cannot ask me what I'm doing.
- 7:15Speaker 1: I know what I'm doing. Don't do you can't. You
- 7:17Speaker 1: can't call me and say, raschem was up? What you're doing?
- 7:22Speaker 1: Why you asking? Dude? You're calling me? You know, I
- 7:24Speaker 1: really don't have time to go down a day to
- 7:27Speaker 1: day description of what I'm doing. So what what's what's
- 7:29Speaker 1: up with the conversation? And so because you you have value,
- 7:33Speaker 1: and so once you realize you have value, then your
- 7:35Speaker 1: your your conversation shifts to what the conversation should be
- 7:38Speaker 1: about money. If it's about money, and guess what, we're
- 7:41Speaker 1: gonna talk a long time on the phone. You know,
- 7:44Speaker 1: if it's about what I'm doing or telling me I'm
- 7:46Speaker 1: being successful? Pretty much know that I really do. And
- 7:49Speaker 1: that's not being arrogant, because that's why you're calling me,
- 7:52Speaker 1: and that's why that's why things are being posted about me.
- 7:55Speaker 1: It's a plan of action that I've created so people
- 7:58Speaker 1: can understand why your only why am I interviewing YouTube
- 8:02Speaker 1: on the phone to day because you created a money
- 8:04Speaker 1: making conversation about your brand and that's important for people
- 8:08Speaker 1: to understanding. Let's let's talk about this brand right quickly.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Terry made her directing debut. She directed the episode of
- 8:14Speaker 1: Bounce TVs Man and Wife starring David and Tamila Main
- 8:18Speaker 1: which there were two of my funniest people in the world.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Uh BT on tw seventeen, is currently streaming all platforms.
- 8:25Speaker 1: She she's She's directed uh romantic comedies, She's directed female
- 8:31Speaker 1: buddy comedies. You know all this is female driven? Is
- 8:35Speaker 1: that a drawing a genre that you want to control
- 8:38Speaker 1: to this brand that we create over here can be
- 8:41Speaker 1: a pro because Girls Trips when that movie came out,
- 8:44Speaker 1: went straight through the over a hundred million dollars made
- 8:47Speaker 1: uh Tiffany hattish uh a major star in the in
- 8:51Speaker 1: the film industry. Is that is that's it's that's true,
- 8:54Speaker 1: It's that's the niche direction for your production company. Terry. Absolutely, UM.
- 9:00Speaker 1: You know, we we write and want to tell stories
- 9:03Speaker 1: about what we know about UM and we know all
- 9:06Speaker 1: about being women. We know all about coming of age,
- 9:09Speaker 1: we know all about heartbreak, we know all about trying
- 9:12Speaker 1: to be businesswomen, we know all all the plethora of
- 9:15Speaker 1: stories that that try through the life of a woman
- 9:20Speaker 1: and all the different things that we have to deal
- 9:22Speaker 1: with being mother's wife, just the gammuck. There's never thinking
- 9:26Speaker 1: stories in the life of a woman, and so we
- 9:29Speaker 1: want to tap into that and there's a market that
- 9:33Speaker 1: wants to be fed. We want to women of color
- 9:37Speaker 1: want to see stories that resemble them, stories that they
- 9:40Speaker 1: can relate to. Stories that's being told by people that
- 9:43Speaker 1: look like them and not being told from the perspective
- 9:46Speaker 1: of somebody that really has no clue. That's just you know,
- 9:50Speaker 1: going by what they see on TV, or creating images
- 9:54Speaker 1: that they want us to take in that are not
- 9:57Speaker 1: necessarily representative of who we are. Are. Um So that
- 10:01Speaker 1: is the goal for our company is we want to
- 10:04Speaker 1: keep feeding that audience because they're there, because it's who
- 10:09Speaker 1: we are, and we feel like we have a responsibility
- 10:13Speaker 1: to do so because if we don't, you know who,
- 10:16Speaker 1: no one's gonna do it. No one's gonna do it,
- 10:18Speaker 1: or they are told by men and not to say
- 10:20Speaker 1: men can't tell a story. However, authenticity is very important
- 10:24Speaker 1: and I think the best stories, the things we watched
- 10:26Speaker 1: that we love, they come from authentic place. And Terry
- 10:30Speaker 1: has often said, you know, the impact that she had
- 10:33Speaker 1: being Levita um Alixate on Steve Harvey made such an
- 10:38Speaker 1: impact with so many young women because these young women
- 10:41Speaker 1: and young girls, they need to see, they need to
- 10:44Speaker 1: have something to aspire to that is outside the reality realm.
- 10:47Speaker 1: And unfortunately we do see a lot of brown women
- 10:49Speaker 1: in reality TV, but there are other options out there.
- 10:52Speaker 1: And as our that's our goal as me in the
- 10:54Speaker 1: Holiday It's like, we want to tell stories that young
- 10:57Speaker 1: people can look up to and be like, wow, this
- 10:59Speaker 1: is real. These are women. That's my mom, that's my aunt,
- 11:02Speaker 1: that's my sister, um and and right now there's a big,
- 11:05Speaker 1: big hole for that market. Absolutely. Before we go to
- 11:09Speaker 1: the break, Uh, Terry, please tell us what Nina Holiday
- 11:14Speaker 1: Entertainment that name? Where did it come from? So when
- 11:17Speaker 1: Cat and I first got together, um, we were you know,
- 11:21Speaker 1: very artistic women and I'm a huge man of Billy
- 11:27Speaker 1: Holiday and she's a huge fan of Nina Simone. So
- 11:31Speaker 1: we decided to name our company after those two trail
- 11:34Speaker 1: blazing women because we felt like we were about to
- 11:37Speaker 1: blaze some trails in Hollywood and be misunderstood like they were. Yeah, yeah,
- 11:44Speaker 1: I can't understand that. You know, you know what, y'all
- 11:47Speaker 1: believe me when I see Because I wanted to ask
- 11:49Speaker 1: the question about directing because you know, it's it's it.
- 11:54Speaker 1: It's a thing that can be accomplished. It's something I've
- 11:57Speaker 1: never really done, is direct I've super fies ep chose
- 12:02Speaker 1: understand the principles of directive. But when we come back,
- 12:05Speaker 1: because this course is coming straight to you, Terry, what
- 12:08Speaker 1: is a director and how does one grow grow the
- 12:13Speaker 1: skills to be a great director? Just Rachhard McDonald. You're
- 12:18Speaker 1: listening to money making conversations, and of course I'm the host.
- 12:22Speaker 1: That's why you're listening to me now. Before we went
- 12:25Speaker 1: on a break, I was directing the question straight to
- 12:28Speaker 1: Terry j Vonn and it was regard to directing. And
- 12:31Speaker 1: because that's because of the fact that it's like in
- 12:34Speaker 1: anything over the years, if you look at athletics, you know,
- 12:37Speaker 1: the black quarterbacks wouldn't consider it a position that would
- 12:42Speaker 1: be available to athletes of color. Middle linebacker wasn't a
- 12:46Speaker 1: position of color a center, wasn't the position of color?
- 12:49Speaker 1: Certain people say that then BO involved a certain intellect,
- 12:53Speaker 1: a certain skills, set, a certain a certain a certain mentality,
- 12:57Speaker 1: authenticity to the craft. And when I so when I
- 13:00Speaker 1: see individuals like you're starting to master it and starting
- 13:03Speaker 1: to expand beyond that, I really wanted to take a
- 13:06Speaker 1: moment it just get into your head. Terry from a
- 13:09Speaker 1: director and standpoint, what does it take to be a
- 13:11Speaker 1: really good director? UM? So for me, it's first of all,
- 13:17Speaker 1: respecting the craft, like you said, UM, respecting the craft
- 13:22Speaker 1: of actors as well as the craft of UM storytelling.
- 13:28Speaker 1: And I think that because I come from the world
- 13:32Speaker 1: of acting and I've always been very adamant about about
- 13:36Speaker 1: taking that craft seriously as much fun as it can be,
- 13:40Speaker 1: and these really fun characters that I've gotten to play,
- 13:44Speaker 1: it is a craft and it's something that I've taken
- 13:46Speaker 1: seriously the moment I decided I wanted to be an actor.
- 13:50Speaker 1: And I think because I'm sensitive to what it takes
- 13:55Speaker 1: for an actor to deliver UM. Just the things that
- 13:59Speaker 1: we put our minds and our bodies and our hearts
- 14:03Speaker 1: through to create characters that are realistic for you, that
- 14:07Speaker 1: sound that are grounded and can take you on an
- 14:10Speaker 1: emotional roller coaster. I know what it takes for an
- 14:12Speaker 1: actors to do that, and I think that's what makes
- 14:15Speaker 1: me a really great director. It's because I respect that
- 14:18Speaker 1: in the actor and I want to talk them through
- 14:21Speaker 1: it and I'm fighting for them to deliver something that
- 14:26Speaker 1: is authentic that I know when they see it, they'll
- 14:28Speaker 1: be proud of it, and I know when the audience
- 14:30Speaker 1: is that they'll be affected by it. UM. And there's
- 14:32Speaker 1: you know, there's different kinds of directors. I definitely say
- 14:36Speaker 1: that I am an actor's director because of that, because
- 14:39Speaker 1: I give so much respect to the actor, and there
- 14:42Speaker 1: are some directors that are more interested in how their
- 14:46Speaker 1: camera moves and and you know, the different looking shots. UM.
- 14:51Speaker 1: For me, I'm I'm completely an actor's director, and I
- 14:56Speaker 1: see the vision when I'm reading the script or reading
- 14:59Speaker 1: the scene, I do visualize and I leave it up
- 15:02Speaker 1: to my DP to create what that vision is that
- 15:05Speaker 1: I see. UM, So I can focus on my work
- 15:09Speaker 1: with the actor. And you know, if I see something
- 15:12Speaker 1: that I don't like, I'm um strongly opinionated about. Now,
- 15:16Speaker 1: I don't like the way that shot looks. You need
- 15:18Speaker 1: to fix that angle. Whereas when I first started, I wasn't.
- 15:21Speaker 1: I was very timid about saying that shot seems weird
- 15:25Speaker 1: because I couldn't really verbalize why it felt weird to me. Um.
- 15:29Speaker 1: But like you said, because I've been, you know, able
- 15:32Speaker 1: to I'm I think I'm on like movie number six
- 15:35Speaker 1: now or seven. Um, so I'm able to hone the
- 15:38Speaker 1: craft more and get better and get more confident. Um.
- 15:42Speaker 1: But the one thing that that I love that you know,
- 15:46Speaker 1: working with actors like uh, Sherry Sheperd and Wendy Rochel
- 15:50Speaker 1: Robinson and Janny Hubert and John Amos, people that I
- 15:55Speaker 1: admire and love look up to. For them to say
- 16:00Speaker 1: they love working with me, that I'm one of their
- 16:03Speaker 1: favorite directors, that is what matters to me. I mean,
- 16:07Speaker 1: you you you do through our working actors and actress
- 16:11Speaker 1: Oh yeah, this is what they do. You know, they
- 16:13Speaker 1: go out there, they resonated. If they're not working, something's
- 16:16Speaker 1: wrong because they go in there. You know, they just
- 16:19Speaker 1: they just picked you know, I want to have on
- 16:21Speaker 1: my show. I wanted this, you know. So that's really
- 16:23Speaker 1: you know, and cause I'm fans of all the names
- 16:26Speaker 1: that you throughout and it's really important. So, so if
- 16:29Speaker 1: please explain to me the working relationships between you and
- 16:32Speaker 1: kaz at Nina Holiday Entertainment. Um, we're family, We're sisters.
- 16:40Speaker 1: We argue, we disagree, we come together. We have a
- 16:44Speaker 1: vision that we both want to see and sometimes are
- 16:48Speaker 1: our path of getting there. Might you might want to
- 16:52Speaker 1: go this way to get there. I might want to
- 16:54Speaker 1: go this way to get there. And so we just
- 16:56Speaker 1: talked about it and come to an agreement on how
- 16:58Speaker 1: we're going to get there. But the big thing is
- 17:01Speaker 1: that we have the same vision of where we're going. Cash,
- 17:07Speaker 1: let me hear your first Terry just tells me what
- 17:11Speaker 1: were you're heading? You know, I'm so easy going. You
- 17:19Speaker 1: know she is strange all this. I don't know where
- 17:25Speaker 1: she gets to the timid. I don't know where she
- 17:27Speaker 1: gets word tim you said, you know it's timming on
- 17:30Speaker 1: the shot. I'm going like, who's she talking to? No? Yea,
- 17:35Speaker 1: you know that's fall bull crap idiots. Like the thing
- 17:42Speaker 1: is I am this This is why it really works,
- 17:44Speaker 1: to get really really work. Um, we do have the
- 17:46Speaker 1: same vision. Terry is definitely more practical and definitely more airing.
- 17:50Speaker 1: So I stay in my head and I constantly throw
- 17:53Speaker 1: things at are. I'm constantly like, what do we do this?
- 17:54Speaker 1: Why don't we do this? Why don't we do this?
- 17:56Speaker 1: What about this? What about this? And she's able to
- 17:58Speaker 1: take that and formula, Okay, this is a plan, so
- 18:01Speaker 1: we'll start with this. This is what people are looking for. Um,
- 18:04Speaker 1: this is how we'll go out. So it really it
- 18:07Speaker 1: really works really really well. Um. She definitely is the
- 18:11Speaker 1: more vocal presence. I would remain kind of in my
- 18:15Speaker 1: own space if I could, but she has thankfully helped
- 18:18Speaker 1: me can kind of drag me out of that space.
- 18:20Speaker 1: Because again, the brand is very important, and both of

- 18:28Speaker 1: we know when we got together, we said we're going
- 18:31Speaker 1: to change the culture. Like I remember playing this day
- 18:34Speaker 1: sitting in her house and in Los Angeles, and we
- 18:37Speaker 1: started this company and we said, we're just gonna start
- 18:39Speaker 1: shooting stuff and we're gonna make stories about women and
- 18:41Speaker 1: we're gonna change the culture and we're gonna change history.
- 18:44Speaker 1: And that's gonna be that and that has constantly been
- 18:47Speaker 1: our goal. But if I'm going that's coming out, So
