- 2:53Speaker 1: their passions. And if you have a passion, don't let

- 3:10Speaker 1: His name is Phil Thornton. His music industry's the music
- 3:13Speaker 1: industry executive, television producer, don't sleep on that, and senior
- 3:17Speaker 1: vice president general manager of r C A Inspiration r
- 3:19Speaker 1: C Inspirations, the number one label and gospel Music Home,
- 3:23Speaker 1: the Kurt Flanker, Bam Fred Hammer, the Walls bro the
- 3:26Speaker 1: Walls Group, Landrew Johnson, and many many more. And we're
- 3:29Speaker 1: gonna talk about that because I'm gonna pull out this
- 3:31Speaker 1: press release. The Just Stella Awards and so many people
- 3:33Speaker 1: that actually because rename the show the Provident Entertainment Awards.
- 3:37Speaker 1: That's what they struld rename it. Show all these folks
- 3:39Speaker 1: out there jamming up there. But he's also a member
- 3:41Speaker 1: of the National Museum of African American Music. Uh, He's
- 3:45Speaker 1: a board member, and that's important. We talked about that
- 3:47Speaker 1: because the museum is dedicated to reserving and the celebrating
- 3:52Speaker 1: the many john Is created influence inspired by African Americans.
- 3:56Speaker 1: The museum is located in Nashville and were featured special
- 3:59Speaker 1: trick of feature in Black Music Month, which is the
- 4:02Speaker 1: month of June and present coveted right raps of the
- 4:05Speaker 1: Rhythm Awards to the Fish Jubilee Singers and Line Richie
- 4:09Speaker 1: and Smokey Robertson and Quincy Jones and Shaka can get
- 4:15Speaker 1: you know if your old school, like when you gotta
- 4:16Speaker 1: say shock a name twice because feelware so many hats.
- 4:19Speaker 1: There are plenty of words that can be used to
- 4:21Speaker 1: describe music industry executives like him and television produces like him.
- 4:25Speaker 1: For there's only one two words to describe. And when
- 4:28Speaker 1: I see him, and because he's a dear friend of mine,
- 4:30Speaker 1: I called him the man. Please work with the money
- 4:33Speaker 1: making conversations, dumb man, feel thing well, the man, the man.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I gotta bring the man back. You know, you know,
- 4:47Speaker 1: you know we met Mary, you came down. We had
- 4:49Speaker 1: a nice meal. Actually I moved. I bought a building
- 4:53Speaker 1: in Atlanta, man and um one acre lot and just
- 4:57Speaker 1: h expanding on the opportunity. He's a more into television production,
- 5:02Speaker 1: producing to television series currently, you know, expanding in the talent.
- 5:06Speaker 1: But one of the things I always appreciated you, and
- 5:09Speaker 1: I think that what what you really liked about me
- 5:12Speaker 1: was the ability to multitask. And you do a very
- 5:16Speaker 1: good job of that field. You've always done that well.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Talk about that that ingredients because a lot of people
- 5:22Speaker 1: fail because they don't understand. They get I gotta do
- 5:24Speaker 1: this one thing and focus on this one thing. That's true,
- 5:28Speaker 1: but you have to be able to do many things
- 5:30Speaker 1: while you're focusing on that one thing. Tell us about
- 5:32Speaker 1: that fielding you gotta. I mean, to me, it's all
- 5:35Speaker 1: about multitasking. I love music, I love television and film
- 5:39Speaker 1: as well. But I've been fortunate, Rashan to have great partners,
- 5:42Speaker 1: you know, every steps on on the label side, I
- 5:46Speaker 1: have a great team that supports me, which makes life
- 5:49Speaker 1: much easier there. And then for my television and film productions,
- 5:52Speaker 1: A partnered with various production companies to just kind of,
- 5:55Speaker 1: you know, make sure things are moving with excellence and
- 5:57Speaker 1: on time. And so you know, it's really about just prioritizing, delegating,
- 6:03Speaker 1: and just working with people that you know, share that
- 6:05Speaker 1: same heart and dash. And that's that's very true, because
- 6:09Speaker 1: but the key is feel. You know, I'm put the
- 6:12Speaker 1: word put another titler on visionary, okay, because you have
- 6:15Speaker 1: to see things that other people don't see, and sometimes,
- 6:18Speaker 1: you know, we we take that for granted because you know,
- 6:21Speaker 1: I always love the fact that when I look at
- 6:22Speaker 1: my life, you know, you know, when I was branding
- 6:25Speaker 1: Steve Harvey, the word branding wasn't popular. You know, it's
- 6:27Speaker 1: just something I just did naturally. And so when I
- 6:30Speaker 1: used the word branding a branding expert, that's you. When
- 6:33Speaker 1: you were visionary as a person who sees things. He
- 6:36Speaker 1: sees talent, and he takes that talent into his fold.
- 6:39Speaker 1: And guess where they become stars or they become or
- 6:42Speaker 1: they they they've lost their way. And you said, hey,
- 6:45Speaker 1: come work with me, and I think we can we
- 6:47Speaker 1: can do something together. That's a visionary. How is it
- 6:50Speaker 1: when you look at talent. That's why I called my
- 6:52Speaker 1: boy Will Packer. You know when he came on the show,
- 6:54Speaker 1: I said, Will Packer, Man, you know when we were
- 6:57Speaker 1: doing act like Think Like a Man. And you know,
- 6:59Speaker 1: because Steve Harvy that when we sold the book to
- 7:01Speaker 1: screen Jams, we envisioned that to be a white movie.
- 7:05Speaker 1: We really did. And so Will Packinson. Now, man, I
- 7:08Speaker 1: got this guy named Kevin Hard, and I knew Kevin Hart,
- 7:11Speaker 1: you know, but I didn't know Kevin Hard like he
- 7:15Speaker 1: was pattioned about Kevin Hart. And so that was a
- 7:17Speaker 1: visionary who basically launched Think Like a Man, basically launched
- 7:22Speaker 1: step Kevin Hard's career. And also out of the same movie,
- 7:27Speaker 1: Um John legend hit came out of that, and so
- 7:31Speaker 1: so the two major players in the music genre and
- 7:33Speaker 1: the acting comedic drama blew up because of his vision
- 7:37Speaker 1: and his association, you had that same ability, whether it's
- 7:40Speaker 1: new talent or talent that's been established, or talent to
- 7:43Speaker 1: look for a new vibe in their life. Talk about
- 7:45Speaker 1: how you look at these different challenges that people present
- 7:48Speaker 1: you from a talent standpoint. Shout out to my brother,
- 7:52Speaker 1: Will Packers, that's my that's that's my brother, good friend
- 7:55Speaker 1: of mine. But yeah, I mean on the talent level,
- 7:58Speaker 1: it's it's just certain indescribable quality. You know, over when
- 8:03Speaker 1: I meet talent that I never want to be the
- 8:07Speaker 1: one to outwork talent. So when I see and hear
- 8:09Speaker 1: that passion, that commitment, that clear vision, that they see
- 8:14Speaker 1: it as well. And I'm more so of a person
- 8:17Speaker 1: that's becoming an executor of source by having a talent
- 8:21Speaker 1: that really really has a clear picture of who they
- 8:24Speaker 1: are person foremost, and that's always important and and and
- 8:28Speaker 1: again I may amplify what they say and what they envisioned,
- 8:32Speaker 1: but it's important for the talent to have a true
- 8:34Speaker 1: clear vision of who they are. Like, I don't want
- 8:37Speaker 1: you to just do something because I think it's great.
- 8:39Speaker 1: I want you to basically have that foresight and that
- 8:42Speaker 1: vision and I'll come in, like said, amplify take it
- 8:44Speaker 1: to another level. But I look for authenticity. I look
- 8:47Speaker 1: for just you know that that work ethic and just
- 8:50Speaker 1: being clear on your purpose and this is really your
- 8:53Speaker 1: This is really your purpose. Because not everybody wants to
- 8:56Speaker 1: be an actor should be an actor, or everybody wants
- 8:58Speaker 1: to be a singer to be a singer. So making
- 9:01Speaker 1: sure that your purpose in your passion are intersecting, and
- 9:04Speaker 1: but making sure that you're also authentic and there's something
- 9:07Speaker 1: about you that will connect with people, and that's what
- 9:10Speaker 1: people look for. Well, it's the Stellar Awards shows that
- 9:13Speaker 1: you're you. You're dealing with authenticity. You know, when you
- 9:16Speaker 1: look at the fact that the thirty six annual Stellar
- 9:19Speaker 1: Awards and profitent Entertainment celebrates twenty three nominations for the
- 9:24Speaker 1: thirty six annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards, with ten artists
- 9:29Speaker 1: nominating in seventeen categories. Do you what do you come on? Now?
- 9:34Speaker 1: You know your room crowded? Now your rooms crowded. Now
- 9:38Speaker 1: just the nominations alone, your rooms crowded. The room was crowded.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Grateful we got some you know, we think twenty three
- 9:45Speaker 1: nominations ship, well, Michael Jordan's ship. So I'm feeling think
- 9:50Speaker 1: about that what I'm saying, you know, but I can
- 9:52Speaker 1: always I got wrong on the mantel that I'm looking
- 9:54Speaker 1: at my mantel now, and some Stellars and some Manage Awards,
- 9:57Speaker 1: and some of we gotta always make wrong. I'm just building,
- 9:59Speaker 1: come on up. But the three thing. I brought that
- 10:01Speaker 1: up because you know, one of my favorite people care
- 10:03Speaker 1: shipped Kelly. I gotta put Kelly on there because you're
- 10:05Speaker 1: mad at autists of the Song the Year, Albertina walk up,
- 10:10Speaker 1: Female Artists of the Year, Album of the Year. Uh,
- 10:13Speaker 1: coming to your contemporary female artists a year. When I
- 10:16Speaker 1: look at Mally Music, Marvin Seth, Donnie mcclerk and All
- 10:20Speaker 1: Nations Music, Travis Green, who I love to death, you know,
- 10:23Speaker 1: Landraw Johnson, Corene Hawthorne, Melvin cris Bel and KB. Now
- 10:29Speaker 1: when I gotta go back up to Travis Green because
- 10:32Speaker 1: he's a special talent, because he has a crossover audience,
- 10:37Speaker 1: if I'm not mistaken. And when I interviewed him and
- 10:40Speaker 1: UH a couple of years ago. And then I look
- 10:43Speaker 1: at Donnie, said, Dunnie mclerk And I've been doing Donnie
- 10:46Speaker 1: mccirklands since since two thousands, and we fall down, which
- 10:50Speaker 1: which which put him in another stratosphere way back in
- 10:53Speaker 1: two thousands, we falled down. So then you look at
- 10:56Speaker 1: Marvin Seth, you know, his back to back singles. He's
- 11:00Speaker 1: doing syndicated radio on Sundays weekend show. So all these
- 11:04Speaker 1: people are different. And then you have this young thirty
- 11:07Speaker 1: three year old kid, Sheered Kelly. You know who's out there?
- 11:10Speaker 1: Madley music? Who? Who? Who? When you talk to him
- 11:12Speaker 1: on phone, you're talking, You're talking like your friend. You know,
- 11:15Speaker 1: you know, don't you know? You know? Because people get
- 11:17Speaker 1: that word gospel, they think they're talking to somebody who's
- 11:20Speaker 1: gonna hit him upside the head with the Bible. And
- 11:22Speaker 1: that's same thing with Travis Green. You have these people
- 11:25Speaker 1: all just real people, man. I think that's what you
- 11:28Speaker 1: use when you say the word authentic, that's what you're
- 11:30Speaker 1: talking about. Yeah. Absolutely, man, you gotta thinking about it.
- 11:34Speaker 1: They yes, all of them love God. They have that
- 11:37Speaker 1: in common. They've been called to do this, but they
- 11:39Speaker 1: know more people like you or not. I literally just
- 11:42Speaker 1: had a meeting with with our mutual Frank Kirk Franklin
- 11:45Speaker 1: right before this, and you and I both over. Sarah
- 11:47Speaker 1: Kirk is one of the most down to earth people
- 11:50Speaker 1: you know there is like he's gonna give you a
- 11:51Speaker 1: scripture if you need a scripture, a positive word. But
- 11:54Speaker 1: he's a regular brother that's going through you know, things
- 11:57Speaker 1: like you and I so mean but again so but
- 11:59Speaker 1: same thing with Travis, which, by the way, we got
- 12:01Speaker 1: a new single you heard it here first from Travis
- 12:04Speaker 1: Green coming out at the end of June with Travis
- 12:07Speaker 1: featuring Kirk Franklin and John p Key. So that's that's
- 12:10Speaker 1: gonna be a big record for Travis Green. So we
- 12:15Speaker 1: come on that the North Carolina bar Right, that's right,
- 12:19Speaker 1: Charlotte Solotte, that's right. He got me, got me going
- 12:23Speaker 1: back in my roots now with John that's taking you
- 12:28Speaker 1: back right there. Tell Travis Rashaan wants him on the
- 12:32Speaker 1: show the end of June. Just tell Travis Green, that's
- 12:34Speaker 1: my boy. I gotta have you know bender absolutely And
- 12:40Speaker 1: so when I when I look at the whole thing
- 12:41Speaker 1: and that reason, I'm just slowing it down a little
- 12:43Speaker 1: bit because we all on the show to talk about
- 12:45Speaker 1: you being a board man. We only show to talk
- 12:46Speaker 1: about the National Museum African American music. But gospel is
- 12:51Speaker 1: such a key component to that music, to that genre,
- 12:54Speaker 1: and so many people come out of gospel that supports
- 12:57Speaker 1: the rest of the genre of music that's at these
- 13:00Speaker 1: at your African American Museum. What where is gospel at?
- 13:04Speaker 1: You know, we come out of COVID where I'd like
- 13:06Speaker 1: to believe faith was reinforced in especially with the civil
- 13:10Speaker 1: unrest with with George Floyd. And you know, the anniversary
- 13:14Speaker 1: is coming up this month. Unfortunately of his one year
- 13:17Speaker 1: of death, murder or whateever name you want to put
- 13:21Speaker 1: it definitely wasn't right. And uh, fortunately the first police
- 13:25Speaker 1: officer has been indicted and then we're up this summer
- 13:28Speaker 1: we'll find out how long he will be imprisoned or incarcerated.
- 13:32Speaker 1: So where is gospel music at? Because you know, you
- 13:35Speaker 1: have hip hop went out there exploded. You know, you
- 13:38Speaker 1: always have R and B, and then you had fusion,
- 13:41Speaker 1: you have jazz. Where is gospel music in that landscape?
- 13:44Speaker 1: Or uh, popularity or revenue tours all those things. Nowhel
- 13:51Speaker 1: music is uh, it's continues to grow stronger than ever.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Like I mean, we had a record breaking year then
- 13:58Speaker 1: for our division, So I mean, you know, great releases
- 14:01Speaker 1: from care is shared and you know Karin Hawthorne having
- 14:05Speaker 1: you know, airplay on both the R and V and
- 14:07Speaker 1: the Gospel Station's Kirk Franklin had three number one singles,
- 14:11Speaker 1: one of which was a gold single and Love Theory.
- 14:13Speaker 1: So I mean it was a record setting year for
- 14:15Speaker 1: US as a division, but also the genre as a whole.
- 14:18Speaker 1: I mean, people like Jonathan McReynolds and Tasha cop Leonard
- 14:21Speaker 1: from you know my Competitors and also you Got You've
- 14:23Speaker 1: Got Maverick City Music. I'm sure you're familiar with them.
- 14:26Speaker 1: That that's the new wave right now. They're doing tremendous
- 14:29Speaker 1: things in the gospel realm as well, so really the
- 14:33Speaker 1: future looks bright. A lot of our partners at Spotify, Apple, Amazon,
- 14:37Speaker 1: pandor et cetera are seeing that this is an underserved
- 14:41Speaker 1: community that but that that constantly shows up, you know,
- 14:45Speaker 1: with the minimal resources they've applied. So now they're starting
- 14:48Speaker 1: to really you know, ramp up more personnel and more
- 14:52Speaker 1: creating more opportunities on platform and more real estate for
- 14:56Speaker 1: gospel music, which is encouraging because they also see the
- 14:58Speaker 1: global coortunities for gospel. We're seeing a lot of growth
- 15:02Speaker 1: in Africa and Brazil in the UK, so it's just
- 15:06Speaker 1: it's really continues to just grow and grow and seeing
- 15:09Speaker 1: cross genre collaborations, people like Kanye doing gospel and you know,
- 15:13Speaker 1: Justin Bieber just had a gospel album, just continue chance
- 15:18Speaker 1: to wrap a holy I love that cup, I love
- 15:21Speaker 1: that cut. Then yes, yes much right with Shaunder, gospel
- 15:26Speaker 1: continues to be you know, current relevant and and we
- 15:30Speaker 1: see I mean even hr the singer her who just
- 15:32Speaker 1: one who's won four Grammys in Oscar just a few
- 15:34Speaker 1: weeks ago, She's got a gospel song that you know,
- 15:37Speaker 1: we put it out through our division. So again we're
- 15:39Speaker 1: seeing a lot of our mainstream artists really paying homage
- 15:42Speaker 1: to their roots and and and unapologetic about their faith,
- 15:46Speaker 1: which is extremely important. So we're just like I said,
- 15:48Speaker 1: we're seeing the catalog grow year over year, but we're
- 15:51Speaker 1: also seeing the new artists continue to have a lot
- 15:54Speaker 1: of opportunity and generate revenue extreames. Well you know, you know,
- 15:58Speaker 1: I'm one of those guys. I'm a big thinker. You know,
- 16:01Speaker 1: when I see Travis Scott go down in Houston do
- 16:04Speaker 1: his Astra World concert and then sell out in a
- 16:07Speaker 1: couple of hours and ten thousand people buying tickets, and
- 16:11Speaker 1: they don't they only have a line of just buying
- 16:13Speaker 1: tickets on faith that can we get that in gospel?
- 16:18Speaker 1: Can we get can these young stars? Can we can
- 16:21Speaker 1: we get that energy where there's a huge way they
- 16:24Speaker 1: can fill up you know, Philadelphia Football Stadium. It can
- 16:28Speaker 1: the future get there? I know we tried it with
- 16:30Speaker 1: the Three Kings when Donna mcclarg and Kirk and and
- 16:33Speaker 1: uh and Marvin sapp about ten years ago. What can
- 16:37Speaker 1: we get there? Then? Can they Jonathan McReynolds and all
- 16:40Speaker 1: these talents that I think, can they get on the
- 16:42Speaker 1: stage and generate ten fifteen thousand people showing up? Am
- 16:46Speaker 1: I asking too much and making that statement? I didn't
- 16:50Speaker 1: know what? I think It's absolutely possible. I think Jonathan U,
- 16:54Speaker 1: Karen Hawthorne, There's a few artists that immediately come to
- 16:56Speaker 1: mind that could really uh be a catalyst said that,
- 16:59Speaker 1: But I'm telling keep your eyes on that Maverick City Music.
- 17:02Speaker 1: I've been watching their momentum and they're independent, you know,
- 17:05Speaker 1: they're they're independently young and you know, targeting a young
- 17:09Speaker 1: multicultural audience what you know as God as you know
- 17:12Speaker 1: target at eighteen to twenty four demo they just announced
- 17:15Speaker 1: the tour. I think it was like fourteen cities a
- 17:17Speaker 1: few weeks back, sold out in four days. You know so,
- 17:21Speaker 1: I mean so, I feel like they are well on
- 17:24Speaker 1: their way. And when I look at just the next
- 17:26Speaker 1: generation to actually do a ring, I see Arenas in
- 17:30Speaker 1: their future. Wow. I love it. It's finally here, the

- 19:01Speaker 1: Sure you know what else grows in the forest, Our imagination,
- 19:04Speaker 1: our sense of wonder, and our family bonds grow too,
- 19:08Speaker 1: because when we disconnect from this and connect with this,
- 19:14Speaker 1: we reconnect with each other. The forest is closer than
- 19:18Speaker 1: you think. Find a forest near you and start exploring.
- 19:21Speaker 1: I Discover the Forest dot org, brought to you by
- 19:24Speaker 1: the United States Forest Service and the ad Council. Well,
- 19:28Speaker 1: let's get back to why I brought you on. Man.
- 19:29Speaker 1: You know June his Black music, mak You know, we
- 19:33Speaker 1: know the advertisers, they've they've taken note of that they
- 19:36Speaker 1: want to spend money doing Black music math and the
- 19:39Speaker 1: big celebration in Nashville. Why Nashville for the National Museum
- 19:42Speaker 1: of African American Music, Nashville, Tennessee music city, right, that's
- 19:50Speaker 1: what they call so but I'm the Detroit up there. Yeah, yeah,
- 19:58Speaker 1: atant you know, it is a big coined music city.
- 20:02Speaker 1: So it's just it's it's so appropriate that the museum
- 20:06Speaker 1: should be open here. I mean, we opened it, you know,
- 20:08Speaker 1: the soft opening was back during in January doing MLK
- 20:11Speaker 1: weekend and since then, you know, it's been open, you
- 20:14Speaker 1: know for weekends, and we've now expanded it to open
- 20:17Speaker 1: Wednesday through Sunday. But this June Black Music Months celebration,
- 20:22Speaker 1: it's like the super Bowl, but the muse in like
- 20:24Speaker 1: this is that's what it is. And so it's super exciting.
- 20:27Speaker 1: I mean, we've got the Legends Gala on you know
- 20:30Speaker 1: that Thursday, the yeah, you know, honoring some of the legends,
- 20:36Speaker 1: I mean Quincy Jones and Lionel Ritchie and Smokey Robinson,
- 20:40Speaker 1: Miss Shatka Kha. I'm gonna say that was that was
- 20:45Speaker 1: the first forty five I had on my breakfast place.
- 20:49Speaker 1: I feel for you, so shout out to Miss Shakakhan
- 20:51Speaker 1: and then the fifth two police singers. So that's the
- 20:53Speaker 1: Legends Gala. And then on that Friday, you've got a
- 20:56Speaker 1: series of panel discussions what we're calling the State of
- 20:59Speaker 1: Black Music. So so I mean we're talking about everything
- 21:01Speaker 1: from sports and music, the fashion of music, to business
- 21:04Speaker 1: and music. And also you know we're gonna be doing
- 21:07Speaker 1: Our Lives podcast, say the Black Music podcast hosted by
- 21:11Speaker 1: Yours truly. Um, So that's happening on that on that Friday,
- 21:14Speaker 1: and then Saturday is the Big Black Party and June
- 21:17Speaker 1: Team celebrations. So it's so much happening in Nashville, Tennessee
- 21:21Speaker 1: at the museum. I'm just excited and I just encourage
- 21:24Speaker 1: everybody to come out and see this momentous institution. Let's
- 21:28Speaker 1: talk about this shot. I knew you're on my show,
- 21:31Speaker 1: but it sounds like you should be on Good Morning
- 21:33Speaker 1: to America. Sounds like you should be on today's show
- 21:35Speaker 1: right now. Seriously, you know this is the this is
- 21:38Speaker 1: your music city. Okay, this ain't motor said You're in
- 21:41Speaker 1: music city. This is the this is the National Museum
- 21:44Speaker 1: of African American music. You talking about when you said
- 21:47Speaker 1: when you got to the black part that was going life? Okay, okay,
- 21:50Speaker 1: where who else know about this? I'm trying to get it.
- 21:54Speaker 1: I'm excited, So I'm saying that why can't I why
- 21:58Speaker 1: can't you be on Good Morning America talking about this?
- 22:00Speaker 1: Where's the press on this? Man? What's who? Does anybody
- 22:04Speaker 1: see what I see? Here? Field? You know? Man? I
- 22:06Speaker 1: see big Man? You CBS, I'll say, CBS This Morning
- 22:11Speaker 1: has been a great support of the museum. They're actually
- 22:14Speaker 1: working on doing another feature to highlight this wonderful uh
- 22:18Speaker 1: we celebration that we have coming up. So but they've
- 22:21Speaker 1: been super supportive. We love CVS and hopefully you know
- 22:23Speaker 1: all friends of g m A has show us some
- 22:24Speaker 1: love and the Today's Show because that's because that's Father's
- 22:28Speaker 1: Day weekend, right that that June. Yeah, because it's on
- 22:31Speaker 1: a Sunday, so that June team, So I mean it's
- 22:33Speaker 1: but you know again, it's it's if you can't make
- 22:36Speaker 1: it on that Sunday, we're not doing it Sundays off
- 22:38Speaker 1: or even if that Saturday you can't make it, but
- 22:40Speaker 1: Thursday and Friday, it's it's gonna be so much and
- 22:43Speaker 1: so many great people you can, you know, learn so
- 22:46Speaker 1: much amazing information and meet and network and you know,
- 22:50Speaker 1: just think about what what do you know a celebration
- 22:51Speaker 1: where they honor in Quincy Smokey Lion on and shot
- 22:54Speaker 1: and releasing is that's just iconic, that's I mean some
- 22:58Speaker 1: of the great and so I'm super excited about what
- 23:01Speaker 1: we have. But again here in Nashville, Tennessee, let's call
- 23:04Speaker 1: music city. Well, you know something you've sold me feel
- 23:07Speaker 1: actually yourself? Why are you just teasing anyway about that?
- 23:10Speaker 1: But the thing I just love about it because I
- 23:12Speaker 1: get so excited and watching your brand. You know, I
- 23:15Speaker 1: feel the thing about it. I always talk about your brand.
- 23:17Speaker 1: I feel your special talent. I happen to be in
- 23:20Speaker 1: the room where you were honored by the legends and
- 23:23Speaker 1: that was a special night. And uh and you're many
- 23:25Speaker 1: more personal honors coming your way. But how did you
- 23:28Speaker 1: get involved with the National Museum African American Music? How
- 23:32Speaker 1: did that come about as a board member. I was
- 23:36Speaker 1: a good friend of mine. She just was telling me
- 23:40Speaker 1: about the museum maybe five years ago, and facilitated an
- 23:44Speaker 1: introduction with Henry Hicks, who's our you know, president of
- 23:48Speaker 1: CEO of the museum. And when I met Henry, I
- 23:51Speaker 1: guess he felt that passion my love for music and
- 23:54Speaker 1: black music, because black music, be clear, is American music
- 23:58Speaker 1: when you think about every genre, it was like black people,
- 24:01Speaker 1: African Americans. I played a significant role and the creation
- 24:05Speaker 1: um not always demonetization, but the creation has been UM
- 24:10Speaker 1: started with us. And so he felt that passion in
- 24:12Speaker 1: that conversation. And you know, they voted me on to
- 24:15Speaker 1: the board, like I said, almost five years ago, and
- 24:18Speaker 1: I've been rocking since, did a lot of fundraisers, um
- 24:21Speaker 1: you know Sony. I was you know, pretty instrumental in
- 24:24Speaker 1: Sony's financial gift that they donated a few months back.
- 24:28Speaker 1: So really, this is something that is so much Rashan
- 24:32Speaker 1: there and I had to be a part of it
- 24:34Speaker 1: because beyond the actual institution, I think about the education initiatives,
- 24:39Speaker 1: what we can do on elementary all the way through
- 24:42Speaker 1: college and scholarship opportunities, and these are things that we're
- 24:45Speaker 1: absolutely implementing now. And so that's the you know, for
- 24:48Speaker 1: the museum to be beyond the institution. And I wanted
- 24:52Speaker 1: to be a part of that narrative, that storytelling and
- 24:55Speaker 1: and you know, Adam and doing my part of it
- 24:58Speaker 1: that music is. You know, I'm old enough to have
- 25:03Speaker 1: done that forty five single, the little forty five A
- 25:05Speaker 1: and B side, and I always remember that, uh, you know,
- 25:08Speaker 1: and then I went to the eight track, okay, and
- 25:10Speaker 1: I thought that was been a cassette. And then you
- 25:13Speaker 1: you know, we all had that long playing album, you know,
- 25:16Speaker 1: but then then all of a sudden that the CD
- 25:18Speaker 1: came out, and then and then all of a sudden
- 25:21Speaker 1: it became digital. And so now I'm in my car
- 25:25Speaker 1: can look at you know, any type of genre of music.
- 25:29Speaker 1: I can make my own station if I wanted to.
- 25:31Speaker 1: How is that play out for the artist? You know?
- 25:34Speaker 1: Because you have independent individuals got there, they can start
- 25:37Speaker 1: their own labels. It's just a different game out there.
- 25:40Speaker 1: And sometimes I don't even know. I'm experienced in the
- 25:43Speaker 1: game feel and I don't even understand it. What what what?
- 25:46Speaker 1: What technology or what knowledge do you have to bring
- 25:49Speaker 1: to the game or or it's always a constant learning
- 25:52Speaker 1: club for you feel throwing in the music business today,
- 25:58Speaker 1: it's constantly a learning curve always. That's how you continue
- 26:02Speaker 1: to be great, like because you know it was it's
- 26:05Speaker 1: as you mentioned. I mean, it's evolved over the years,
- 26:08Speaker 1: and so when I think about now, even with n
- 26:10Speaker 1: f T and bitcoin and everything happening with that movement
- 26:13Speaker 1: with the music industry, that's the next wave of of
- 26:17Speaker 1: you know, how music is going to be shared and
- 26:20Speaker 1: and monetized. So you have to be a continue to
- 26:22Speaker 1: be a student. I'm a student. I listen, I talked
- 26:25Speaker 1: to my peers. I'm talking not only to the to
- 26:28Speaker 1: the other CEOs and like my Sylvia Own and John Platt,
- 26:31Speaker 1: but I'm also talking to this younger generation to see
- 26:34Speaker 1: what's the new, what's now, what's next, because you can
- 26:37Speaker 1: learn so much, so much. Hi everyone, Al Rooker here,
- 26:41Speaker 1: as a guy with his own catchphrase, I appreciate that
- 26:43Speaker 1: Smokey's only said only you can prevent wildfires, But I'm
- 26:48Speaker 1: filling in because there's a lot more to report, like
- 26:50Speaker 1: when they're parched, their windy conditions out there. You gotta
- 26:54Speaker 1: be extra careful with things like burning yard waves. After all,
- 26:58Speaker 1: wildfires can start anywhere, even in your neck of the woods.
- 27:01Speaker 1: Go to Smokey Bear dot com to learn more about
- 27:04Speaker 1: wildfire prevention. Brought to you by the U. S. Forest Service,
- 27:07Speaker 1: your state forester and the AD Council. If I could
- 27:10Speaker 1: be you and you could be me for just one hour,
- 27:13Speaker 1: if you could find a way to get inside each
- 27:16Speaker 1: other's mind. Walk a mile in my shoes, Waco mile
- 27:20Speaker 1: in my shoes, shoes. We've all felt left out, and
- 27:25Speaker 1: for some that feeling lasts more than a moment. We
- 27:28Speaker 1: can change that. Learn how it belonging begins with us.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Dot org brought to you by the AD Council. Welcome
- 27:35Speaker 1: mile in machines. Look at your children's eyes to see
- 27:41Speaker 1: the true magic of a forest. It's a storybook world
- 27:45Speaker 1: for them. You look and see a tree, They see
- 27:48Speaker 1: the wrinkled face of a wizard with arms outstretched to
- 27:51Speaker 1: the sky. They see treasure and pebbles. They see a
- 27:55Speaker 1: windy path that could lead to adventure, and they see you.
- 27:59Speaker 1: They're fear s guide. Is this fascinating world? Find a
- 28:03Speaker 1: forest near you and start exploring. I discover the forest
- 28:06Speaker 1: dot orgon brought to you by the United States Forest
- 28:08Speaker 1: Service and the Council. Well, you know now I need
- 28:11Speaker 1: to know about the museum. You know when miss spawning
- 28:14Speaker 1: and when it opened up in uh Washington, East African
- 28:17Speaker 1: American Museum lines You couldn't get in because they told
- 28:24Speaker 1: us exactly what that experience was going to be about.
- 28:27Speaker 1: You know, you told us about the block was happening
- 28:29Speaker 1: on third was having on Friday block party on Saturday.
- 28:32Speaker 1: You know what is the museum experience when you walk
- 28:35Speaker 1: through that front door? Is it two floors? It's in
- 28:38Speaker 1: a basement. How many square footage? Let's let's take our
- 28:41Speaker 1: time because I want you to be as visual and
- 28:44Speaker 1: let's have fun with this because we're walking through African
- 28:48Speaker 1: American history, music history here, Phil. I want I want
- 28:51Speaker 1: to take our time. I want to have fun with this.
- 28:53Speaker 1: Next this next question the museum and the museum is uh,
- 28:57Speaker 1: how many floors is it? How many square fee? You know,
- 29:00Speaker 1: just just walk me through the front door, man, and
- 29:03Speaker 1: like you just the tour guy. Oh, I got visio,
- 29:06Speaker 1: I got people who listening to the show. I got
- 29:09Speaker 1: people watching the show. So you really got to be creative.
- 29:11Speaker 1: So the people listening, they gotta feel like they're walking
- 29:14Speaker 1: with you. The people who can see you, they gotta
- 29:17Speaker 1: feel like, Man, I can actually see that that that
- 29:20Speaker 1: that billy, that that saxophone, I can see that guitar.
- 29:23Speaker 1: I can see it all, I can hear it all. Yeah,
- 29:26Speaker 1: it's it's when you walk into this beautiful space on
- 29:30Speaker 1: Fifth and Broadway, Nashville City downtown. You see instruments when
- 29:35Speaker 1: you first walked through the door, and some other great
- 29:38Speaker 1: artifacts wardrobe from some of your favorite artists. But then
- 29:41Speaker 1: you actually the tour starts um in our Roots Theater
- 29:45Speaker 1: where we kind of show you a ten minute movie
- 29:47Speaker 1: on just the origin of Black music and it's evolution
- 29:50Speaker 1: over the years. You immediately exited the Roots Theater and
- 29:54Speaker 1: the first gallery that you enter is the Wade in
- 29:57Speaker 1: the Water Gallery, which is our gospel gallery. Uh. It's
- 30:01Speaker 1: so super impressive because everyone knows the music started with
- 30:04Speaker 1: spirituals at him hymns and gospel music is the foundation
- 30:08Speaker 1: of all genres of music, so you started the gospel.
- 30:11Speaker 1: Then it goes into the Blues gallery. Uh, then Jazz
- 30:15Speaker 1: and I mean just to see some of the artifacts
- 30:17Speaker 1: and the awards. Remember Bill, you're from some of your favorites.
- 30:19Speaker 1: And then you go into the One Nation Under Group,
- 30:22Speaker 1: which is an R and B gallery, which is probably
- 30:24Speaker 1: one of my favorite galleries, and just seeing everything from
- 30:27Speaker 1: history about Motown records and stacks and Billy International I
- 30:31Speaker 1: means so much history, but also you'll see some of
- 30:34Speaker 1: your favorites, you know, like your your Mary J. Blige
- 30:37Speaker 1: and Erica Batdo was highlighted in there. So it's I mean,
- 30:40Speaker 1: it takes you on a musical journey, um. But also
- 30:44Speaker 1: you have these great interactive experiences within each gallery, so
- 30:48Speaker 1: you can actually on your wristband that you have on
- 30:51Speaker 1: against the museum, you can actually add you know, playlists
- 30:54Speaker 1: from some of the favorite artists that you may discover
- 30:56Speaker 1: in the museum. And you know, there's an interactive in
- 30:59Speaker 1: the Gospe Gallery where Dr Bobby Jones and you can
- 31:02Speaker 1: sing in the virtual choir. But in the R and
- 31:04Speaker 1: B Gallery you can have a dance off, uh, you know,
- 31:07Speaker 1: to some of your favorite music. And then the museum
- 31:10Speaker 1: concludes with our hip hop gallery, which is really one
- 31:14Speaker 1: of my favorites as well, because I mean you can
- 31:16Speaker 1: you can actually record a freestyle, you can make a
- 31:19Speaker 1: bet in there. Uh, you can rhyme too some of
- 31:21Speaker 1: your favorite songs. And again at all those are your
- 31:24Speaker 1: wristband that you get to save as a you know,
- 31:26Speaker 1: kind of a souvenir. Electronically everything is sent to you.
- 31:29Speaker 1: But so much history in there, again covering you know,
- 31:33Speaker 1: gospel blues, jazz, R and B and hip hop. So
- 31:36Speaker 1: it's super impressive, all fifty six thousand square feet of
- 31:40Speaker 1: just excellence in history and musical bliss. You know the
- 31:45Speaker 1: fact that you started with gospel, you're in with hip hop.
- 31:48Speaker 1: You know, I think it's it's a phenomenal. And then
- 31:51Speaker 1: I see and let's just expand the whole conversation to
- 31:53Speaker 1: see how blacks have finally been recognized in country and
- 31:57Speaker 1: western country music. I should say country music, it's been
- 32:01Speaker 1: we're finally getting recognized. We're not a fluke. And so
- 32:05Speaker 1: I'm not saying that we including that. I'm just saying
- 32:07Speaker 1: that we finally started to get recognition about our contribution
- 32:11Speaker 1: the eacht genre. But we're putting that arto together. There
- 32:15Speaker 1: had to be some heated debate in the room. Do
- 32:17Speaker 1: we start with gospel, did we end with hip hop?
- 32:19Speaker 1: Did we do jazz? Did we do R and B?
- 32:22Speaker 1: Come on, come on, tell me about that room before
- 32:23Speaker 1: we go, because you know, come on, now, come on
- 32:27Speaker 1: hip hop. I know somebody to say hip hop. They
- 32:30Speaker 1: can't because they can't say that him word. I know.
- 32:32Speaker 1: It was some debate for them oldies when it can't
- 32:35Speaker 1: hip hop. It was there was some spirited discussions, and
- 32:37Speaker 1: I was a part of them because I raised some
- 32:39Speaker 1: of those questions. But I gotta tell you, but I
- 32:43Speaker 1: gotta celetate this time to celebrate the amazing historians. It
- 32:47Speaker 1: was about a dozen, about twelve thirteen historians and ethno
- 32:50Speaker 1: music cologists that worked really, really hard, Rashaan on the
- 32:54Speaker 1: storyline for the museum. And you had to start with gospel.
- 32:57Speaker 1: That's where it's started so musically, I mean, but they did.
- 33:00Speaker 1: This is you're talking about years upon years of research
- 33:04Speaker 1: and you have some of the best and the brightest
- 33:06Speaker 1: to just know about music and so but you can't.
- 33:09Speaker 1: But you know, we gotta acknowledge where it started gospel,
- 33:12Speaker 1: and we also got to acknowledge where it is now
- 33:14Speaker 1: hip hop. And I will tell you country, you know,
- 33:16Speaker 1: I know they're working on some special exhibits and there's
- 33:19Speaker 1: been a number of country artists. You know, Darius Rucker
- 33:21Speaker 1: is one of our national chairs. You know, Kane Brown
- 33:24Speaker 1: actually celebrated at the opening, uh soft opening during MLK
- 33:28Speaker 1: weekend and Willie Jones. So again, country is very much
- 33:32Speaker 1: part of the storyline, and we're doing more to expand
- 33:34Speaker 1: it because we need to make sure the country as
- 33:36Speaker 1: well as rock and roll. I mean a little Richards
- 33:38Speaker 1: and I mean, you know so many people that you
- 33:40Speaker 1: know represented throughout the museum. I really can't wait for
- 33:43Speaker 1: you to see June next week, so you know coming.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Come on, So where did you go to college that man?
- 33:52Speaker 1: To get all this knowledge? Man? What school did you
- 33:54Speaker 1: go to? North? You going on? Now see proud graduate.
- 34:06Speaker 1: This is the whole thing. I'm going through the resume
- 34:08Speaker 1: and many times I interviewed you, I've never know said
- 34:11Speaker 1: it's born from Norfolk State hp TU and we never
- 34:15Speaker 1: talked about that on the doing the end of you
- 34:18Speaker 1: Now you know, you know, and that's my home, that's
- 34:21Speaker 1: home for me. Norfolk is home, so d A is home.
- 34:23Speaker 1: I was actually I was hanging with Ms. Elliot the
- 34:25Speaker 1: other day in Atlanta. We were catching up at dinner
- 34:28Speaker 1: and we were just talking about how grateful we are
- 34:30Speaker 1: to be from Virginia. Just we learned so much forget
- 34:33Speaker 1: Norfolk State and that s the whole degree, ain't gold?
- 34:35Speaker 1: Come on, before we last thing, I want you to
