Transcript
- 0:00OK guys, today we sat down with Clark Plummer and Allie Laville,
- 0:04the dynamic duo. Clark's been ripping it up in
- 0:08the White Mountains for a long time.
- 0:10Allie is a converted Roadrunner doing trails and ultras now,
- 0:14tearing up the scene. They both had FKTS.
- 0:18We talked about race finishes that we've talked about some big
- 0:22things coming up. These guys are in the know.
- 0:25It was a fun talk and you guys are going to see a lot more of
- 0:29them in the future. Here is the episode.
- 0:33All right, Clark plumber Allie Laville, the dynamic duo just
- 0:38coming off of White Lakes. So Allie did 36 miles in the six
- 0:42hour 2nd place overall. Clark goes 40 miles on a bum
- 0:46knee. How are you guys feeling?
- 0:49How's the recovery going? I feel good.
- 0:51Yeah. Yeah, I'm back to speed work as
- 0:53of today. Nice.
- 0:54Yeah, that's a quick bounce back.
- 0:56Yeah, well, I took it pretty easy during the week, but yeah,
- 0:59hit the sauna. But massage nice.
- 1:01Yeah, I feel good. Sweet, that's that's a good
- 1:04sign. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:05Clark's on the bike. He's bike biking for a little
- 1:08bit. You just got a new bike.
- 1:09Big bike guy. Yeah, a little upgrade to make
- 1:11it more enjoyable, but yeah, I think we're six days without
- 1:14running, which is pretty long for me.
- 1:17Tough, but you're but you're hype on the bike.
- 1:19You texted us this morning a picture of your feet.
- 1:22It's it was 40° raw, rainy. You texted us a picture of Shaws
- 1:27or plastic bags and duct tape over your feet.
- 1:29You're like, I hope my feet are warm today.
- 1:31Yeah, it it worked for a little and then it didn't work.
- 1:35We're back to the drawing board on that one.
- 1:37Yeah, Yeah. Well, this is what I want to
- 1:39kind of start out with. Your enthusiasm is off the
- 1:43charts. I mean, I think Ally too.
- 1:44I don't I haven't seen her on the trip as much, but your
- 1:47energy. So I want to get the whole
- 1:49background story, but anytime I see you on the trail, you're
- 1:52just like so pumped, so stoked. Early morning ripping around.
- 1:57How did you get into trail running?
- 1:59So I played lacrosse my entire life and then into college and
- 2:03then after lacrosse was over, I kind of needed something to fill
- 2:07my time. So I decided to start hiking.
- 2:10So I did the 48 and then I met Michael Connolly and we started
- 2:16doing bigger hikes, longer hikes.
- 2:18And then I forget what day it was, but I remember I was on
- 2:21Jackson and I saw somebody running down the mountain and
- 2:26then it kind of just clicked. So then I was like, wait, that's
- 2:29allowed. So we or I got into running and
- 2:33then me and Mike kind of just made it a thing and we got into
- 2:38it a trail running at least. Started ripping around.
- 2:41We're going to talk about all your peak bagging.
- 2:43One thing I actually know about you, Clark, that I don't know if
- 2:46I've told this to you. Maybe I have once, but somebody
- 2:48gave me a little secret that in college.
- 2:50Where'd you play lacrosse? Riviere.
- 2:52Riviere, they were like, dude, he was so good, real goalie.
- 2:57He was like we we should have had a better team around him,
- 3:00but he was like an elite goalie. That was Dalton pocket you.
- 3:04Know. Yeah, I know, Dalton.
- 3:06He said he played with you guys, right?
- 3:07Yeah, he did, yeah. We met at some backyard ultra
- 3:09and he was just going off about, that's so funny about you just
- 3:12being a good athlete. So it makes sense that you're
- 3:14good in the mountains. So you come from an athletic
- 3:17background, Ally, are you? You're now in the trail scene.
- 3:21Did you? Obviously, Clark probably pulled
- 3:24you this way, but you were originally a Roadrunner.
- 3:26Is that true? Yeah, yeah.
- 3:27I was a Roadrunner for maybe 8 years before I met Clark and
- 3:33then he was like, we need to get you on the trail.
- 3:35You gotta try this. You gotta try.
- 3:37Yeah, yeah. So he slowly sucked me in.
- 3:40So now I've been on trails, what, 2 years?
- 3:42Yeah. I think so.
- 3:44Dang, OK, so two year and coming in making waves we're going to
- 3:48have to go through. I was looking at your FKT list
- 3:52and I'm like holy smoke, she's just going out firing.
- 3:55You guys have two multi FKTS this year so far?
- 3:58Yeah. Is that like bucket list?
- 3:59You guys starting to look at things together?
- 4:01That's more of Ali. She's a big spreadsheet girl.
- 4:03Spreadsheet. OK.
- 4:04Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I don't know.
- 4:06We have a couple actually that we want to do as a team that
- 4:09we've been looking at since last year, so we want to do one.
- 4:13Are we going to tell them about this?
- 4:14Is this 1A secret? Oh boy, we we.
- 4:16Can cut anything we don't need to.
- 4:17Get in the secret so this. Is maybe we don't.
- 4:19Plan secrets at the end of our podcast So.
- 4:22Like. It's there.
- 4:22I'll say we're going to do, there's a 50 mile effort that
- 4:25we're going to do probably in August that's going to be team.
- 4:30I don't know if we're going supported or self supported yet,
- 4:33OK. It'll test the relationship.
- 4:35Yeah, well. It's a long time together, yeah,
- 4:38especially if it's unsupported. I know we started supported now
- 4:42we're unsupported. That's funny.
- 4:44Well, I was going to I was going to ask about this.
- 4:48Obviously you guys are both like training for lots of races
- 4:50efforts like both athletes, ultra marathoners.
- 4:55How is it like balancing the schedules?
- 4:57Do you do you guys schedules line up?
- 4:59Do you guys have I need a rest week.
- 5:01I need to run a lunch a lot this week.
- 5:04Like how does the the schedules line up for two athletes in the
- 5:07same household? Well, Clark doesn't take down
- 5:10weeks, so he's always same volume I'm.
- 5:14Working on it. So it's really just I look at
- 5:19what my schedule is and I'm like, I'm doing this this
- 5:21weekend. And Clark usually is either
- 5:23running with the boys or he's like, OK, yeah, yeah, we can do
- 5:26something, yeah. Yeah, link up for a lot of stuff
- 5:28or some stuff that fits. But we both, usually we run in
- 5:31the morning and then go straight to work, come back and I mean,
- 5:35we basically just make dinner together and then repeat.
- 5:40So our schedule's pretty aligned.
- 5:41Eat sleep train, yeah. Eat.
- 5:43Sleep, train, Yeah. Nice and tend to our dogs like
- 5:45clockwork. Yeah.
- 5:47OK. So kind of going back to the
- 5:48background, so you start like most, you're a grid finisher.
- 5:52Shout out, what number are you? Oh man, 100 and something.
- 5:56I think 100 something. OK, he's just like another grid.
- 5:59I was on gridlock because of COVID so I had kind of had to
- 6:03wait it out. Got you, but after COVID I got
- 6:06it done. Yeah.
- 6:07So you, you just get the 4000 footers, the the I love hike and
- 6:11then you're like running. I remember actually there was a
- 6:13couple hikes that probably put me down the trail running hike
- 6:15actually one with you that I will talk about.
- 6:18But I just saw a couple of people running out here be like,
- 6:20I think I could do it. And then you just slowly go
- 6:22faster. The one time I saw you, I think
- 6:25the first time I'd met you, was that you were doing a Pemi with
- 6:28Mike and you guys were going counterclockwise and I was going
- 6:31clockwise. And we like passed it Galehead
- 6:35or something. And I saw these guys flying on
- 6:37the trails and I was literally in shock.
- 6:39I was like, these guys are incredited.
- 6:42They're just flying over these rocks.
- 6:43I was getting into it and then I talked to you guys at the end,
- 6:46so it was funny. But then you just start doing
- 6:501,000,000 feet of vert a year. So you really went hardcore into
- 6:54this trail running. So was it a slow burn or were
- 6:56you just like, oh, this is awesome, I don't.
- 6:58Know, I kind of got the bug and I just kind of made it like part
- 7:03of my day and like everyone around here, they love to chase
- 7:07vert. So vert stacks.
- 7:09Yeah, yeah, I kind of got hooked on that wagon.
- 7:12I kind of let that go a little bit more because it is a lot of
- 7:15time. And then I'm trying to, you
- 7:17know, balance that vert to like running because I think there's
- 7:21a big difference between like fitness and like you can't
- 7:25always get it from just stacking vert.
- 7:28It definitely helps, but I think you got to find that fine line
- 7:31between it all. Yeah, I think that's we're all
- 7:34trying to do that and like realizing like we have to be
- 7:36kind of fast, but we also have to stack a lot of vert.
- 7:40Have you been doing any workouts with Ally?
- 7:42Because I'm sure like road running background, she's got
- 7:45workouts up the wazoo. So Ally got me to do my first
- 7:48track workout. That was fun.
- 7:51I was very sore the next. Day I got burned he.
- 7:53Literally wasn't even doing it right.
- 7:55I was like, all right, we're going to do like an 800 meter
- 7:58Sprint or something. And then he'd Sprint it and then
- 7:59he'd just keep going. And then he's like, OK, what
- 8:01now? And I'm like, well, you're
- 8:03supposed to recover in between sets and he's so hard.
- 8:07Yeah, he he didn't even do it properly, but we'll try again.
- 8:10Working on it, work in progress. And then we did like an
- 8:12intervals on the street. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:15That was before our half marathon.
- 8:17Yeah, yeah, yeah. Those also weren't intervals,
- 8:19really. It was just same speed the whole
- 8:21time because I was like, OK, we're supposed to slow down now.
- 8:24I think clerks like, oh, OK, And then we slow down shortly and
- 8:26then it's like back to the same pace that we're supposed to be
- 8:29going. And I'm like, all right, this
- 8:30is. Yeah, workouts are hard.
- 8:33I will say that workouts are hard.
- 8:34I don't even think I do mine right.
- 8:36I I feel like I almost break too much where I just like Sprint as
- 8:39long as I can and I just, I'm like, I'm just going to walk it
- 8:42in for like a minute or two. Like I don't do any floats or
- 8:45whatever, like real floats. So I I feel you, Clark.
- 8:48It's hard. What that means, yeah.
- 8:50Or or like like like rest periods where you're.
- 8:53Trying to still like move. Forward.
- 8:54I get it. Yeah.
- 8:55Yeah. So how many years did you do?
- 8:58A million feet avert. I did three years straight.
- 9:01Three straight years. Yeah.
- 9:03Insane. I, I, I'm always curious about
- 9:06your schedule when you're doing that, because when I go to the
- 9:10White Mountains, I do 4 hours in the mountains.
- 9:11Like I'm just like destroyed, like body shaking, you know, at
- 9:14night, like vibrating, you know, same thing in the morning, but
- 9:16you did that like two days a weekend gritting.
- 9:20And then you just go to white dot and do like thousands of
- 9:22feet avert. Lots of repeats at the UNK.
- 9:25Did it, were you like, tired when you were stacking millions
- 9:27of feet, avert. Or were you like, did you feel
- 9:30like you're recovering good? Are you just a crazy athlete?
- 9:33Like tell us the secrets. Oh man, I I eat a lot of.
- 9:37Food. Eat a lot.
- 9:38Eat a ton of food and I definitely prioritize sleep.
- 9:42Yeah. I am that guy that is asleep at
- 9:448:00 every night. Yeah, as boring as that sounds.
- 9:48I go at 8, Yeah. And I wake up early, though, so
- 9:51I guess it makes sense. But yeah, yeah, I do my running
- 9:56in the morning, so then I don't have to dread it all day or
- 10:00worry about like my energy or what not.
- 10:02Yeah, yeah, I think people that run after work or run in the
- 10:06afternoon are like superheroes, 'cause I have like 0 I I
- 10:11couldn't. Yeah.
- 10:12So they they're can't, they can't go on the couch after work
- 10:15because once you hit that, it's done.
- 10:18Yeah. Are you were you always an early
- 10:21personality? Are you, are you on the train
- 10:23now or how does that? Work.
- 10:24No. I was always an early person.
- 10:26Yeah, yeah. I mean earlier since I've been
- 10:30with Clark, but I was usually up by 5530.
- 10:33Yeah, OK, so we got an early household stacking miles.
- 10:36Oh yeah. Were you Ally when you're doing
- 10:38Rd. stuff? Tell me about your background.
- 10:40Did you just like dabble in it for a little bit?
- 10:42Were you focused in on races, marathons?
- 10:44What was? I know you've done a ton of
- 10:46marathons, bunch of different. States yeah, no, I started, I
- 10:50started randomly running during college just a couple miles,
- 10:54maybe even that throughout the week and then ran a 5K and I was
- 10:58like oh that was kind of fun. Signed up for 1/2 marathon like
- 11:00the following week did that and I was like OK, maybe I'll sign
- 11:03up for a marathon. Did that a few months later died
- 11:07and then I was like oh maybe I should actually train for this.
- 11:09So then I just started running like probably 4 marathons a year
- 11:14since then, but it was more of I kind of wanted to do one in
- 11:17every state. So yeah, I mean, I guess I was
- 11:23kind of training, but also at the time I didn't have a ton of
- 11:26time because I was getting my PhD, so couldn't train as
- 11:29properly as I wanted to. So that's been more of a recent
- 11:33thing. Nice.
- 11:34Yeah. So you're kind of like dabbling.
- 11:35I mean 4 marathons a year is a lot though.
- 11:37Yeah, yeah. How many states have you done so
- 11:39far? Only 22, OK.
- 11:42Only only that. Oh, and the 22 states.
- 11:47Honestly. What what's your favorite state,
- 11:49Ben? I feel like I get asked this a
- 11:51lot and I still don't really know.
- 11:53I OK so Alaska is definitely top three because a moose walked out
- 12:00in front of me at mile 23. So that was really cool.
- 12:04But then also the Bar Harbor Marathon is gorgeous so I really
- 12:08liked that one. Also, Lincoln NE Lincoln NE, I'm
- 12:12not even kidding you. The crowds.
- 12:15OK, yes. And you finish in the Husker
- 12:17Stadium? Oh, really?
- 12:18OK it. Was wild because honestly, just
- 12:21the crowds and the people and the spectators, I, I've never
- 12:24seen so many. I mean, you would think you're
- 12:26running like New York or Boston, like everybody was out,
- 12:28everybody's going wild. I mean, it was.
- 12:32Incredible. Yeah, that is cool.
- 12:34Was it a flat course? I would assume isn't it just
- 12:36like? Actually, it was pretty hilly,
- 12:37really. Yeah.
- 12:38I thought it was going to be pretty flat, but I was.
- 12:41I was surprised. OK, Nebraska showing a little
- 12:43kick. Yeah.
- 12:44I imagine trying to be a vert stacker in Nebraska.
- 12:47OK. Yeah.
- 12:48I mean, that would be tough. But I will say there are areas
- 12:50of Nebraska that are super hilly because when we were talking, I
- 12:55think I did what was it, 2425 miles for 2025?
- 12:59But I was in Nebraska at the time and I got a ton of vert and
- 13:02I was just doing a loop around my aunt's house.
- 13:05Dang, I don't even remember, but it was certainly like well over.
- 13:08I think it was over 2K. That's.
- 13:10Good. And it's on roads, so I mean,
- 13:12yeah, yeah. Yeah, there is, There is vert
- 13:14everywhere if you look hard enough.
- 13:16True. Yeah, and you know that.
- 13:19Well, Clark, how many times have you lapped the white dot?
- 13:22Do you think 00? Man, I don't know.
- 13:26I would just say 1,000,000. I've always wanted to like keep
- 13:29track of how many times I've summited like N unk and South
- 13:33unk but I always forget or I or I just like lose track.
- 13:38Spreadsheets. Spreadsheets.
- 13:40Yeah, I guess right, I should we could automatically.
- 13:42Just for something. Really.
- 13:44It would be fun for all of us to do that because especially like
- 13:47Connor, 'cause he literally lives there.
- 13:49Yeah. To see how often we're out
- 13:53there. But yeah, yeah.
- 13:55Yeah, I mean, 'cause I remember this was when I was getting into
- 13:58the trail running maybe five years ago, that was the heyday
- 14:01of you Steve Mason laughing White dot.
- 14:04I mean, you'd see a trail runner on White dot every single
- 14:07weekend. Yeah, like for sure now it's a
- 14:09little bit a little bit quieter. It's getting back though it.
- 14:12Is it is. Getting back, yeah, it is
- 14:14getting back. It is getting back that you're
- 14:15guaranteed to see somebody. Yeah, yeah, somebody.
- 14:18But yeah, way back when it was literally like a party over
- 14:21there. Yeah.
- 14:22So like you never had to really run alone.
- 14:24Yeah. Did you, how did you find the
- 14:26Onkanunix? And like when you started
- 14:29stacking vert, was this, was this like a thing?
- 14:31Because I wasn't even the trail running.
- 14:32I don't know, were people always doing?
- 14:34Laps. When stacking vert became a
- 14:37thing. But I do remember I ended up
- 14:40over at the Unks one day because it was raining and I was like, I
- 14:43can't go to the whites. So I was like, oh, I know
- 14:46there's like, I mean these hills, but they're mountains,
- 14:50I'm just going to stick over here.
- 14:52And I only stuck to the South side because fun little tidbit I
- 14:56heard about a person that was on North Unk that literally just
- 15:00went up and down one trail over and over again.
- 15:03I was like, I can't go over there.
- 15:05There's a guy there that goes up and down all day and I was like,
- 15:10I think I was kind of nervous. And then I ended up making my
- 15:13way over there and meeting Steve Mason.
- 15:16He's super, super nice guy. So yeah, originally I was scared
- 15:20to go to North End, but now I love N the north side.
- 15:25So now I visit both ends. But yeah, way back when I was a
- 15:29little nervous to go to the North End because I was
- 15:30intimidated. But now we're good.
- 15:33I mean, now you're like the guy over there, people.
- 15:36People would want to go see you on the unknown, Clark today,
- 15:39Clark, fly by. Never ask Ali how she likes the
- 15:44Yunks. Yeah, what do you think about
- 15:46the yunks? I mean, they're all right.
- 15:49Oh man, no. Come on.
- 15:51Hot tapes dude. Tell us how you feel.
- 15:53I don't know. I mean I feel like they're OK.
- 15:57If I need vert and I can't really go anywhere then I mean I
- 16:00guess it's a good option but. Yeah, she just doesn't like
- 16:03going up the same mountain multiple times.
- 16:05Yeah. Yeah, I really don't.
- 16:07I don't find pleasure and going up and down white dot a million
- 16:10times. Hey, honestly, me neither.
- 16:12Sometime I I go, I'll go white dot like once or twice a run and
- 16:16then like I got to go elsewhere. Change it up a little bit.
- 16:20No, I I respect it. I respect it.
- 16:22Kicked out of run club. No, no, no.
- 16:26There's been. There's been a good shot though.
- 16:28I've been. I know.
- 16:29The wrong club's huge. Unfortunately, I can never make
- 16:32it to the afternoon one I know which is the big 1 and I have
- 16:36like I have the stupid idea of having one in the morning too,
- 16:39which I think the most we had one day was 4, which that's
- 16:44pretty solid for 5:30 in the morning solid.
- 16:46But after, other than that, it's been just two like me and like
- 16:50Sean Skinner, me and man, who was who else wins with me One
- 16:55time I forget. But yeah, it's been pretty quiet
- 16:58in the mornings. Yeah.
- 16:59We're going to ramp it back up though once I'm back.
- 17:02Get it? Yeah.
- 17:02We'll get the morning session going again.
- 17:04Yeah, yeah, No. Love the yunks.
- 17:08Love the yunks. Shout out the yunks.
- 17:12OK, so Ally, you're getting into the trail running, converting
- 17:15slowly but surely. And it seems like you you do a
- 17:19lot of races too. And I feel like Clark's been
- 17:22doing more races recently. Is this so we see 2 worlds
- 17:25converge here for real? I might be pressuring him to do
- 17:30more racing. Yeah, but you like racing?
- 17:32I do, I feel like I have to be training for something because
- 17:36then if I don't have anything on the docket I just.
- 17:39I don't know how to structure my runs.
- 17:42Yeah, it makes sense. I I feel like I'm I need a goal.
- 17:45Yeah, I I always need one. Yeah.
- 17:48If I don't have a goal, it's like, what am I doing?
- 17:49On here exactly exactly so I always have something lined up.
- 17:52Yeah, nice. Clark, how do you like racing
- 17:55This This year's off to a tough start.
- 17:57This this this podcast time is off to a racing.
- 18:00Is tough, yeah, yeah. Like I tell everybody though,
- 18:03like the one thing about racing that I do like is everyone shows
- 18:07up like at their best. And as much as I love just doing
- 18:11like your own personal projects, it's kind of you verse you.
- 18:14It's like your own ghost. Like if you're ever chasing an
- 18:17FKT or just it's like doing a route that like, you know
- 18:20someone's done so you have like an idea of like their time.
- 18:24It's just like it's really not the same.
- 18:25But racing is definitely pretty fun and Ali's pretty much got me
- 18:30into it. I almost heard the word hooked I
- 18:33think, but my track record is pretty bad.
- 18:40That's not. True, not true.
- 18:41It's still fun. No, it is cool.
- 18:44I do appreciate like I really do like an FKT or project like
- 18:48putting like trying to perfect a route or perfect whatever list
- 18:52to get it done. But I do like the the kind of
- 18:55whatever the day is, the conditions, if you if you're
- 18:58trained in go good. If something came up that week,
- 19:00it doesn't matter. Everyone's racing the same
- 19:03course the same day. Let's see, it's kind of more
- 19:06like the sports, like I came from a sports background, like
- 19:09let's just show up and and compete, just be competitors,
- 19:12which I do like, except if if I have a bad training block going
- 19:16to race, then I don't like this much.
- 19:18Yeah. And I feel like the competition
- 19:20around here is like insane. It's really good.
- 19:23Yeah, like you know, who's there, who's there to compete
- 19:27and like the levels very high. Yeah.
- 19:29So like that's, I think the cool thing about it around here is
- 19:32like it's definitely stacked. Yeah.
- 19:34So. I think it's humbling and it
- 19:36also forces it like there's always going to be someone here
- 19:39we go, this is what I'm talking about.
- 19:40We just don't freak out. Don't freak out.
- 19:43He doesn't have a card in. Yeah, like around here, there's
- 19:47always going to be someone that comes out of the woodwork
- 19:49somewhere on some race and is faster than you no matter what
- 19:52level you're at. But then also it pushes you to
- 19:56get better. Yeah.
- 19:57Which is. Which I think is huge.
- 19:59Yeah. Which I've been trying to kind
- 20:01of get out of my comfort box with some different races.
- 20:04So we'll see. We'll see.
- 20:06But So what races have you done, Clark?
- 20:10Piska, which was really fun. That's like a grassroots 1.
- 20:14Drummer Hill, That's another like Grass Hill, small town,
- 20:17wicked fun. Jagger Johnson 50 Which That was
- 20:21pretty gnarly. Gnarly.
- 20:23It was almost more up your alley.
- 20:25Yeah, definitely more up my alley and Bubba's backyard,
- 20:31which that format, like that backyard format, as much as I
- 20:35hate it, I love it. It's so challenging.
- 20:39Ali cannot stand it. I don't think I'll ever do a
- 20:42backyard. Oof, yeah, I don't think I'll.
- 20:45Do it for a long time. Twice yeah, you love Bubba's and
- 20:48White Lakes. You just keep going back I.
- 20:50Know. Flat.
- 20:51Torture. I know it's because like I have
- 20:54like this glimmer of like false hope that it'll click.
- 20:57Yeah, so. I think it's hard on those flat
- 20:59courses because it's just the same thing every time.
- 21:02And I have a really hard time being patient.
- 21:04Yeah. And that's what those are all
- 21:06about, is just that slow burn, that slow patient burn.
- 21:10Yeah. So it's tough.
- 21:13Was it it was your first time at White Lakes this year?
- 21:15No, I did the 12 hour last. Year, OK, 12 hour last year, is
- 21:19that kind of more up your alley because flat Rd. stuff or you're
- 21:22kind of like you don't like the laps?
- 21:24I don't. I don't like laps, I don't like
- 21:26repeating things. And that's a 2 miles.
- 21:29It goes quick. Yeah, I already said that was
- 21:31probably going to be my last year at White Lakes.
- 21:34I'm done with the the two mile loops.
- 21:36Yeah, I feel you. Honestly, I'm like one day I'm
- 21:39going to show up there just like try to go forever and Bubba's
- 21:42too, but probably not in the near future.
- 21:44But I love volunteering at the at the course because you see
- 21:47everyone so. You can make it.
- 21:49It's nice to see a bunch of people.
- 21:51I only saw you guys both briefly.
- 21:54Yeah. Yeah.
- 21:55Volunteering duties are stressful.
- 21:56You guys are hungry on that course.
- 21:58Yeah, yeah, yeah. We volunteered at.
- 22:01Black bear No bear The bear ultras Black bear ultras.
- 22:04Black. Is that the new one?
- 22:05Yeah, yeah. Yeah, that was fun.
- 22:08That was really fun. Yeah, we liked volunteering
- 22:09there. What were you?
- 22:10What were your duties? We're at.
- 22:12We were at Osceola. Yeah, we were at Osceola, just
- 22:14the two of us, 10 food, water. We ran out of water.
- 22:18So then we had to start giving everybody the water that we had
- 22:20brought for ourselves. Oh no.
- 22:23How much water did you bring yourself?
- 22:24We brought. A lot of.
- 22:25Water. We did bring a lot of water
- 22:26because we were going to get our run in after, but we were just
- 22:29like, Oh well, now we have no water for our run afterwards.
- 22:32But they ended up coming. I think it was like our duties
- 22:35were almost over and they came with more water, but so.
- 22:39Yeah. Yeah, we were panicking.
- 22:42OK, so let's talk about the White Lakes the last weekend.
- 22:46So you, how did it go for you, Allie?
- 22:48You did 36 killed it. Killed it. 36 miles in or Yeah,
- 22:5136 miles in, six hours. Tied Taylor Miller for miles.
- 22:55But then did she come a little bit ahead of you?
- 22:57Yeah, yeah, she beat me by like 6 or 7 minutes 6.
- 22:59Or 7 minutes, so a Sprint finish at a six hour ultra, which is
- 23:02very cool. Was that like an A race for you
- 23:05this year BC? No, that was more of just like a
- 23:08tune up race. Yeah, yeah.
- 23:12So that was just kind of Clark wanted.
- 23:15He signed up. I wasn't even going to sign up.
- 23:17So when he said he was signing up again, I was like, all right,
- 23:20I guess I'll do the six hour, 'cause I'm not just going to go
- 23:22and sit there. Yeah.
- 23:24And yeah. And then Clark, you had a, you
- 23:25had a rough day out there, but you went into it banged up.
- 23:28I feel like 40 miles with a hurt knee.
- 23:31It was. Fun when it lasted, but now I'm
- 23:33like kind of kind of paying for it.
- 23:35Yeah, Yeah. You think it set you back a
- 23:37little bit? Yeah.
- 23:38Definitely set me back, yeah. Because I was kind of nursing it
- 23:40before, which I kind of got it back, yeah.
- 23:43And then, yeah, that was kind of like the little dagger.
- 23:46Yeah, 40 straight miles, right back to Yeah, well, hopefully
- 23:50the bike gets you healed up. Yeah.
- 23:51Have you dealt with knee problems before?
- 23:54Not really. Not like this one.
- 23:56I've never really been, like, injured.
- 23:59Well, that's what I was going to say.
- 24:00You you're one of the only people that, since I got into
- 24:03this consistent high volume, seems to not get injured.
- 24:08I think it's the uphill. Uphill.
- 24:11I think it's a lot more uphill running because like, we don't
- 24:15necessarily run uphill. Yeah, most of us don't.
- 24:18Hike mountain peaks, guys. It's we do a lot of hiking.
- 24:21Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. People don't know.
- 24:24People don't know that. It's like trail running is a lot
- 24:25of hiking. Depending on who you are, yeah,
- 24:28yeah, yeah. A lot of my friends can run on
- 24:30mountains, but not me so. Where on the knee is it because
- 24:33for me when I when I'm doing too heavy and too hard weighted
- 24:38uphill intervals or just like too much uphill time trial
- 24:40stuff. The inside of my knees.
- 24:42Get a little bit sore and then I just have to back off and go.
- 24:44Yeah. So is it inside?
- 24:46Inside and the outside right now.
- 24:48So it's like a double whammy. Nowhere to lean?
- 24:51Yeah, but Allie's nursing me to health.
- 24:53So nice. Working on it.
- 24:54She's very disciplined. Yeah, I am very disciplined.
- 24:57Nice. Huge.
- 24:58Well, it seems like you're pretty disciplined.
- 24:59I mean, you're up and at them every morning.
- 25:02Yeah, that part that part's the easy part.
- 25:04Dang. Yeah, yeah.
- 25:05I. Think I think the resting part's
- 25:07the hard. Part the rest thing.
- 25:08Yeah, the. TLC.
- 25:09That's the hard part. Yeah, I think it's funny.
- 25:11Ryan was telling me a story because, like, we're all like,
- 25:15Clark is just like Energizer Bunny all the time on these
- 25:18trails. And Ryan was like, dude, there
- 25:21was one day this winter we were skinning somewhere.
- 25:24And it was like 0 wind chill. You know, freezing, we both kind
- 25:28of and it's the middle, you know, it's dark, it's in the
- 25:31morning and Clark just comes up to my windows like I'm so
- 25:34excited. I'm so pipe to be here and Ryan
- 25:36was like, I didn't even want to get out.
- 25:38That was where we were at. Oh man.
- 25:41Cram. No, not cram.
- 25:42Crotch it, Crotch it freezing and my skin's froze.
- 25:46So I got I I got. Yeah, Ryan got to get the bonus
- 25:50slapping, but yeah, that brutal. I hate the cold.
- 25:53Yeah, Ally converted me to the treadmill, though.
- 25:56I did. Come inside, it's warm.
- 25:59Yeah, right. Yeah, yeah.
- 26:01I definitely do a lot of treadmill training in the
- 26:03winter. I think my problem is I don't
- 26:04cross. I don't have a cross train.
- 26:06Like now. You do touring and you just
- 26:09indoor treadmill. Do you cross train that much?
- 26:11I mean, I have a bike, sometimes I'll ride it like maybe once a
- 26:16week, but I strength train a lot too.
- 26:19Yeah, that's pretty much it though.
- 26:21Yeah, nice. Yeah, I, I, I've dabbled on the
- 26:25bike a little bit, but I, I use it sparingly or as sparingly as
- 26:28I can. But I, I like a lot of like
- 26:29indoor stairmaster, cross training, incline treadmill
- 26:33stuff, so that's good. Are you working on any lists?
- 26:37Any did you must have a spreadsheet for some sort of
- 26:40hiking list. The 48.
- 26:41I do well, I, I told Clark I was on a five year plan to do a grid
- 26:46and he's like, no, no, don't do it.
- 26:49We have to talk about this. Clark is notorious.
- 26:52The grid. The grid is not good for you.
- 26:55Yeah, yeah, I was, because we were out with, I think we were
- 26:58out with Mike and Lexi. And I was like, maybe I'll do a
- 27:01grid. And Clark spun around.
- 27:03He's like, no. And Lexi was like, I'll send you
- 27:05the list like, yeah, I'm doing it.
- 27:09Clark's like I've seen this before.
- 27:10This is. This does not end well.
- 27:13But yeah, I'm not trying to shove it all into, you know, a
- 27:15short time frame. It's just when I get to it.
- 27:17Yeah, I think that's the best way to do it.
- 27:19I have a loose spreadsheet. I'm almost halfway.
- 27:22I have no peaks in April and November or a couple, whatever
- 27:27it. Ain't no stress.
- 27:28Yeah, yeah. I think it's like 5 or maybe,
- 27:30yeah, maybe five years. I'll just take off the month of
- 27:32April and November, just get all the peaks that we'll close it
- 27:36out. But do you like running up in
- 27:39the mountains and the whites? Oh, I love it.
- 27:40Yeah, it's awesome. Yeah, yeah, he got me hooked on
- 27:43that. Yeah, so good.
- 27:45I mean, every time I go up there, I'm like, this is
- 27:47amazing, but the drive just stinks like where we're coming
- 27:49from. I've learned that like
- 27:52sustainably, once a weekend I can do the drive, but that's it.
- 27:57Yeah, Yeah, it is tough. Don't freak out.
- 28:00Do not freak out. Elevator.
- 28:03I hope so. No one pops out here.
- 28:06No, just joking. We're in a new.
- 28:07We're not in the truck bed. Guys, if you realized we had a
- 28:10rain delay. Yeah, I want to talk about the
- 28:15engagement. Clark goes up.
- 28:18On a rock. Oh yeah, a rock.
- 28:20Oh my gosh. The winter.
- 28:22So what is that you propose on Jackson Pierce, Pierce, Pierce?
- 28:25Can't tell, it could be any mountain to be.
- 28:26Honest. Yeah, it was a not a great.
- 28:30Completely socked in, but it was still perfect, yeah.
- 28:33She had no idea. So I didn't.
- 28:35I didn't. And I always thought I would
- 28:36know when he was going to do it. But yeah, we said it was never
- 28:40going to be on a holiday because I thought that was way too
- 28:42cliche. Yeah, but he agreed that was the
- 28:44only, only way he was going to be able to do it without me
- 28:47knowing. Yeah.
- 28:48So that's. Right, that was.
- 28:50Crafty it was and then you called for cloudy no views,
- 28:54which is also you could never expect that.
- 28:56Yeah, the original plan was Franconia Ridge, but I was
- 28:59talking with Mike and I was like, looking at that forecast
- 29:02and I was like, there's no way Franconia Ridge is going to
- 29:04work. So we opted for Pierce because
- 29:08Pierce is like a safe bet. You can kind of go up there
- 29:10whenever. Yeah.
- 29:12And I was hoping we just stick to Pierce so then we wouldn't
- 29:14have to carry snowshoes. Yeah, but Ali insisted on
- 29:17Eisenhower's, and they're right. There, and you couldn't blow the
- 29:19cover. Right.
- 29:21So yeah, we ended up in a snowshoes.
- 29:23Yeah, down on one knee. And you, how'd you get Mike to
- 29:26go out there? And he was like hiding.
- 29:28Man, Mike will do anything for for me, but for anyone.
- 29:32So I told them that we're going to start at this time.
- 29:35So he like ran up there way before us.
- 29:40So he was just like bundled up and we came across him and Ali
- 29:44was like, Oh my gosh, like this guy, he's it looks like he's
- 29:46lost. So he played the part, really.
- 29:51Yeah. So Ali was like nervous.
- 29:54And I was like, no, there's people up here all the time that
- 29:56they'll figure it out. Well, you were like just
- 29:58completely ignoring him, which I thought was weird because
- 30:00usually Clark is like concerned about other people.
- 30:04And I see this guy and he's just like completely turned to me,
- 30:07like wouldn't look over here. And he's like looking like he's
- 30:09going to go on to Eisenhower, but he's not sure.
- 30:12And I'm like, does he not know where the summit of Pierce is?
- 30:15Like, where's what's he trying to do?
- 30:17And then Clark is like, no, no, it's fine.
- 30:18So then we go up to Pierce and we're coming back down and I'm
- 30:21like the last hiker is still there.
- 30:23And then I turn around because Clark's like, oh, I got to check
- 30:26for my keys and I'm like, now you have to look for your keys
- 30:30now. And.
- 30:32Then he pulls out the ring and my reaction was just complete
- 30:35shock. Yeah, So good.
- 30:37Yeah. Were you nervous?
- 30:38I'm always like, especially when you have to orchestrate
- 30:41something like that. Like, were you freaking out when
- 30:43you saw him when she was about to run over to Mike?
- 30:45Are you like? What do I do right now?
- 30:47I'm going to fake an injury and then yeah.
- 30:49Are you freaking out to make? Sure.
- 30:50She was in front of me. Yeah, to summit.
- 30:52And then I was like, all right, you go ahead.
- 30:54I want to get a cool shot, like a cool, like photo.
- 30:57So then that put her in front of me again.
- 31:00And then I was like. Oh, wait, hold up.
- 31:01I got to. I got to check my bag, make sure
- 31:03my keys in. There, how did was Mike within
- 31:06earshot? How did he know to turn around?
- 31:08I told him where I was going to do it, so he had an idea of
- 31:11like, but you know where like the the view is?
- 31:14Yeah, when you, I guess when you turn on turn to the right to go
- 31:18to the summit, there's like that little flat view right there.
- 31:21So I told him that's the spot. So when we went out to the
- 31:25summit, he followed us and he kind of parked out over there
- 31:29and just look dazed and confused.
- 31:31Yeah, so the last hiker he moved, but he still looked
- 31:34confused and lost. So shout out, my God.
- 31:38Yes. Sir, so shout out you guys.
- 31:41I was I was kind of thinking about this a little bit.
- 31:43I always say this so like know anything, but whenever I just
- 31:46see two like crushing running couples, I'm like fast babies,
- 31:49fast babies, no pressure. We can cut that out, but that's
- 31:53all I want to think about. No, I, I honestly, I hope so.
- 31:57I hope that when we have kids, they like running because I
- 32:00don't. I don't know what we'll do with
- 32:01them. Yeah, yeah.
- 32:03It's so funny. They'll be stuck in the the
- 32:06stroller. I just look at Larson and
- 32:08Sarita's crew and just like. I know, I know.
- 32:11Scary. Scary, scary talent.
- 32:13Yeah, yeah, I'm going to get out of the ultra scene by the time
- 32:16they're of age to race. Yeah, so good.
- 32:21OK, Ali, you had a run of FK TS last year, which I've talked
- 32:25about this before. I think we need more people
- 32:28going out on some of these FK. TS because.
- 32:30There's so many that people haven't even done, yeah.
- 32:32There's a ton. A ton and so you were like, I'm
- 32:35just going to do it and I'm obviously very fast.
- 32:37I'm going to set some good times to get on these boards.
- 32:40Do you know them all off the top of your head?
- 32:42Because I I don't. Well, I know Owl's head.
- 32:45I was pretty happy about that one.
- 32:47Yeah, Artist bluff. Yeah, I think Lars has the other
- 32:52one on artist, Artist Bluff. So those are two good great
- 32:56times, that one from zero to hero that route.
- 33:00I'm trying to think there was oh I have the three at Sunnaby, so
- 33:03there's just the regular Sunnaby loop, sunnaby Figure 8, and then
- 33:06the Sunnaby circumnavigation. The Sunnaby Figure 8 is an
- 33:11awesome. Route.
- 33:11Oh, it's so fun. It's so fun.
- 33:13So if like you're in the area, do it.
- 33:16Yeah, I've never actually. Been out there too much so I I
- 33:18should look into? It I really like Sunnaby I.
- 33:21Kind of race that route, but the guy.
- 33:24Is really good. I forget who has it now, but I
- 33:27think Carter Tracy had it at one point.
- 33:29Someone else just went out and got it.
- 33:31Yeah, it's scary fast. Yeah, it's really fast.
- 33:33Like, I looked down at my watch and I was like, ah, time's up.
- 33:38OK. But to be fair, when we did it
- 33:40that first time, it was so wet. I mean, it was like downpouring
- 33:44and we were running through puddles, so that was tough.
- 33:47Yeah, and I was bonking. Yeah, I love a good bonk.
- 33:52I love a good bonk. I don't.
- 33:54Yeah, Oh my gosh, Yeah, yeah. I don't.
- 33:57I don't. I try not to bonk but.
- 34:00Just trying to figure out that nutrition situation.
- 34:02Yeah, yeah. What other FKTS do you have?
- 34:05Something in the Belknaps? Oh, yeah.
- 34:07Oh, I just got that one. Yeah, the Belknap range.
- 34:09One the double traverse this year, Yeah, very nice.
- 34:13Yeah. And then?
- 34:15And that was a big effort. You're just kind of throwing
- 34:17down like pretty, pretty big efforts.
- 34:19That one was honestly just on a whim.
- 34:21OK, OK, yeah. We were like, we were going to
- 34:24go to the bell naps the night before.
- 34:26I was like, I don't know if I want to go with the guys or not.
- 34:28And then I was like, oh, maybe I'll just go for this.
- 34:30FKT huge. Oh yeah, and then the Fells.
- 34:33Middlesex Fells. Oh yeah, yeah, that's.
- 34:36A gender 1 though you guys got the mixed gender on that I saw
- 34:38the fells and then you went down to the the southern fells which
- 34:42blue the. Blue Hills.
- 34:43The Blue Hills, Yeah. Rugged.
- 34:45Yeah, yeah. You guys had glowing reviews.
- 34:47What was it? Never going back basically.
- 34:50OK, well, apparently we chose like the most rugged route down
- 34:53there and everybody's saying that all the other trails of
- 34:56Blue Hills are really great. We just chose the skyline, which
- 34:59is just apparently horrendous so.
- 35:02I was impressed. Yeah, yeah.
- 35:04It humbled me, Humbled me big time.
- 35:06Yeah, with the technicality, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 35:09So I feel like it's kind of like a it's see, I haven't been
- 35:12there, but it seems like 7 Sisters vibes were just like our
- 35:15technical Rocky. I don't know if that actually,
- 35:19I've never been on Seven Sisters, but.
- 35:20I want to go there, too. Yeah.
- 35:22I just haven't ever made it that way.
- 35:23That's like Western Mass, yeah. Western Mass, Yeah, it's just
- 35:26kind of a trek out there. Nice.
- 35:29And then, yeah, a lot of these are outside of outside of the
- 35:33White. So I did a a White Mountains
- 35:36FKTS podcast where you hopefully shouted out all of them.
- 35:39But when I was doing that, I came up with a list of all the
- 35:41FKTS. So I have a spreadsheet, but I
- 35:42heard you have a spreadsheet. Do you have an all-encompassing
- 35:46FKT spreadsheet? I have an FKT spreadsheet with
- 35:49all the ones that I want to go for and the time that I'm aiming
- 35:53for and all. Wow, yeah.
- 35:56Wow, watch out people. You got to get.
- 35:58You got to get on these routes quick if you want them.
- 36:00Yeah. So I think there's I'm shooting
- 36:02for at least six or seven of them this year.
- 36:04Nice. Yeah.
- 36:05And then two of the, OR at least one of them is the one that
- 36:09we're going to do in August. Yeah.
- 36:11Are we yeah, 50 mile or we're not saying the name of that,
- 36:13that you don't know or. The one that he and I are going
- 36:16to. Do no OK, no, no, no name, no
- 36:18name no. I was going.
- 36:19To say it's up to him, it's up to him.
- 36:21Clark, I know you have a couple of FKTS.
- 36:24Oh, man, I think I only have one that was with Larson and Taylor
- 36:28Miller, Yeah. The mixed gender.
- 36:29Yeah, way back when that was like my first taste of like,
- 36:31Ultra. Yeah.
- 36:33Oh man, Yeah, I was seeing stars on top of.
- 36:36Mouth. Oh my God, Larson was probably
- 36:38like. Good dude.
- 36:39Yeah, he's into that. I told I had to go, like start
- 36:43making my way down because I was like, I'm going to cause a scene
- 36:45on top of this mountain. Like I.
- 36:47Yeah. You abandoned poor Taylor at the
- 36:49top, but the machines were. Still there, but I was more
- 36:53worried about, like, passing out and, like, throwing up all over
- 36:55the place. Yeah.
- 36:56Because like, that's like a tourist mountain.
- 36:58So like, it was like peak hour and there was like, just like,
- 37:02that summit was just covered with people.
- 37:04And I was just like, I can't be up here right now.
- 37:06Yeah. So.
- 37:07Well, that's a good first taste of it.
- 37:08Yeah. Yeah.
- 37:10You're instabio. I remember looking at that when
- 37:14I first heard her to go. Mike, this guy has done all of
- 37:17the big hikes in the Whites, like link ups and just done them
- 37:20a ton. Yeah.
- 37:21So you want to go through some of those like maybe 10, I don't
- 37:24even know. What's up to date?
- 37:25I need to give all like these giant routes.
- 37:28Credit to Mike Connolly. Mike, he is a madman and he
- 37:31makes some heinous routes, especially when he was working
- 37:35on his second grid. I forget, we were just talking
- 37:38one day and we were just like, we got to make this second grid.
- 37:42Like, I don't know, we had to make these peaks, like more
- 37:45interesting. So like we went out of our way
- 37:47to make some weird loops, some weird routes to get all these
- 37:50peaks in and stuff. So yeah, Mike Connolly is like
- 37:54the Roots guy. And you're the hype guy.
- 37:58Bring me a root. But I'll bring the hype guy I'm.
- 38:00The hype guy Yeah, yeah, so. That's awesome.
- 38:03What are some of your favorite like off the grid trails in the
- 38:08whites? It's hard on the spot, but.
- 38:10Yeah, so everyone loves the Prezi and the Pemmi.
- 38:14There's a lot of things you can do with the Pemmi.
- 38:16We did. We've done the Monster PEMMI, me
- 38:18and Mike. That was pretty wild.
- 38:20Give us the stats. Yeah, let's go on to that one's
- 38:22crazy. Give us the stats on that.
- 38:24So we hit all the peaks minus owl's head.
- 38:26So the people that hit owl's head plus all those peak.
- 38:30That's insane. Yeah.
- 38:31With the because they usually bushwack it, right?
- 38:33Yeah. Yeah.
- 38:34So we're not, I am, I'm not that comfortable yet, but maybe
- 38:37someday. So we've done a monster penny,
- 38:39which is like you just add westbound Zealand Hail N Twin
- 38:46Galehead. So basically everything there.
- 38:49Everything. Another one that's kind of like
- 38:51a sleeper that is really tough is Osceola's Tecumseh
- 38:57Tripyramids White Face pass a conaway.
- 39:00You can either loop that or make it a traverse.
- 39:03That's pretty. That's pretty hard 'cause
- 39:06there's not really any views. Yeah, and that's how much of
- 39:11that is on the same Rd. as like the Skyline loop 'cause I know
- 39:16that's a pretty good. One too.
- 39:17We've done that. That's surprisingly, yeah.
- 39:20That's another one with like, lack of views.
- 39:22So it makes it really hard. Yeah.
- 39:25Yeah, that's like 30 miles. But yeah, I guess that would be
- 39:27like the entire skyline minus like the loot part.
- 39:30Yeah. OK.
- 39:32So definitely give those a try. Yeah, no, makes sense.
- 39:35You've got the. Pemedential.
- 39:36Oh shit, yeah, the pemedential swearing aloud on the.
- 39:39Podcast, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 39:42You know, go for it. Yeah, yeah.
- 39:44So Pemedential took me two tries.
- 39:48The first try was that was that was bad.
- 39:53Mike prevailed though, and got it done.
- 39:55And I do remember that. He was moving.
- 39:57So, yeah, that was, what, two years ago?
- 40:00That's when Ali got like, her first taste of like.
- 40:03The depths of, like, crewing and seeing Yeah, yeah.
- 40:07Her and Sarita basically like walked me as a zombie.
- 40:11Was that two years ago already? Yeah.
- 40:14Wow. So yeah, that was, that's pretty
- 40:17heinous, yeah. You were walking with your.
- 40:19I thought you were going to fall asleep while you were walking.
- 40:21Yeah, We were trying everything to keep me up, too.
- 40:23That was like my longest time up.
- 40:24It was like 30 hours, 30 minutes.
- 40:26Yeah, I'm crazy like that. Yeah.
- 40:29That's crazy. A Pemi loop and then you go and
- 40:31do an A loop over the Prezi. What is the fastest way to do
- 40:36that? What it what do you think?
- 40:37Because I was thinking about this.
- 40:39So I'm a penny guy. I prefer the penny, but I think
- 40:44it would definitely be going. Hitting the Prezi first first to
- 40:48just get that out of the way. Yeah.
- 40:49So go northbound and then do the road run back.
- 40:52Right, because I think the road run back in the rail trail you
- 40:55could probably capitalize on. Yeah, versus when you do it the
- 40:58other direction, you're pretty much wasted at that point.
- 41:02Yeah, toast, which makes it really, really hard.
- 41:05Yeah, so and Jefferson Notch Rd. is definitely a hill.
- 41:10Yeah, Oh yeah, it yeah, yeah, the profile for sure.
- 41:14Yeah, so I I was using. Poles, Yeah, that's how on the
- 41:19Jefferson. Hey, nothing wrong with poles.
- 41:21Yeah, nothing wrong with poles on an ultra and A and a hiking
- 41:24and. I've attempted to lodge to
- 41:26dodge. Yeah, which he threw down on.
- 41:29You got close, I got. You got so close.
- 41:32All right, so this is actually my thoughts.
- 41:33I remember seeing that and being like Clark was so close on that
- 41:37lodge to dodge, like you just got to get him up 19 Mile Brook.
- 41:40And then I did that, that section at the end of lodge to
- 41:44dodge and I was like, that was not, I wasn't even close.
- 41:46Like, I'm not even close. Not even close.
- 41:49Yeah. So I still don't know how my I
- 41:51don't know. I don't know how he did it.
- 41:53But yeah, I was pretty much toast after that.
- 41:56Yeah, that was when we got caught in like the wildest
- 42:00storm, too. Where in the prezis?
- 42:02No, we were on Garfield. Garfield.
- 42:05Yeah. Like, you know how there's a
- 42:07tower at the top? Yeah, Well, it was like
- 42:09lightning and thundering, which is probably like a big no no.
- 42:12But like the storm was like coming and you could like, we
- 42:14were on Lafayette when we saw it.
- 42:16We were like, oh, no. And then so we got the Garfield
- 42:19and like, you know, the, I don't know, like the steel cables up
- 42:22there, part of the tower, dude, they were like vibrating.
- 42:25Dang. Like, yeah, it was wild.
- 42:28And then they just went bang and it was wild.
- 42:32And we got to Galehead and like the crew there, they were like,
- 42:34you guys aren't going back out there, right?
- 42:37And we're like, where else are we supposed to go?
- 42:39Like, yeah, we're not going to hang out here.
- 42:41Yeah. So up to South Twin and then it
- 42:43finally stops. Dang, that is crazy.
- 42:47And was it? Was it when you were in
- 42:48Lafayette? Was it was it scary too?
- 42:51Because on my lodge to dodge Lafayette was I would I probably
- 42:55shouldn't have been up there like I was.
- 42:56I remember just like running, just being like get me off this
- 42:58mountain, Get Me Out of it and it's so long down.
- 43:01Yeah, it was like, it was like that calm before the storm when
- 43:04you know, you can, like you have a sense that it's coming, like
- 43:07changing air pressure and all that stuff.
- 43:08So like, that was pretty eerie. So yeah, we bombed down to get
- 43:11to the trees. Yeah, but yeah.
- 43:14Oh, nice. And then by the time we're in
- 43:16the Prezis, we did it clear up. Yeah, and that's when like the
- 43:19night crew comes out. Larson, he's always up for the
- 43:23night. Miles Brady was there.
- 43:26Tyler was there. Oh, wait, no, that was just
- 43:29Larson for the large. Dodge was just Larson for the
- 43:33overnight. Prezi.
- 43:34Thank God because we are both losing it.
- 43:38He kind of kept us straight, but yeah.
- 43:42Emidentially, you had a whole crew.
- 43:43Emidentially, we had a whole crew.
- 43:45We had Connor, Tyler, Brady and Larson and then Ally and Sarita
- 43:52for that long trek out. Yeah, it's always good to have
- 43:56people to take care. Of you.
- 43:57But I was. I did the penny solo.
- 44:00So yeah, I found out that I think I do better when I start
- 44:04things by myself. Yeah.
- 44:05And then people sprinkle in. I think I agree 100%.
- 44:09I feel like at the beginning I just like to go at my own pace,
- 44:13kind of do my own thing, not be like chatting super much.
- 44:16I do think it is it is. You probably go faster without
- 44:18somebody. I just, I just get too excited.
- 44:20Yeah, and then two people are racing up a mountain and then
- 44:22you guys are cooked. Everyone's cooked.
- 44:25Yeah. So Ally, you saw, you saw Clark
- 44:29straight zombie mode in an ultra.
- 44:31And you're like, count me in on the sport.
- 44:33Apparently. Apparently that is exactly what
- 44:35happened. Maybe subliminally, yeah.
- 44:38What's your longest ever been today?
- 44:40Was it the 12 hour White Lakes? Yeah, 'cause I I got, I only got
- 44:4454 there, but I think that's still the farthest I've ever
- 44:47gotten 1 go. Yeah, at least time. 850.
- 44:50Yeah, Oh. Yeah, that was a good race.
- 44:52Out of that, 10 killed it. Yeah, last year was that close
- 44:56to the course record? One of the tops I got, I think I
- 44:59got 4th at. The top, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 45:02She beat all her splits. So she gave me obviously
- 45:05spreadsheet list. So I was like, scheduling, like
- 45:09naps, because that race starts at night.
- 45:11Yeah, But the one time I got a nap, I almost missed.
- 45:17I was like, well, I guess I'm up for the rest of the night.
- 45:19Yeah, you got to update your speed, whatever I.
- 45:23Know I was being conservative. Yeah, yeah.
- 45:26No, that's that's always a good way to do it, but a good sign
- 45:28too when you're moving faster. Yeah.
- 45:31Yeah, no, that's awesome. And you're on your, you're in a
- 45:34route for your first 100 Miller, correct.
- 45:36Is that a? Is that true?
- 45:38Yep, mid state again, but the 100 Miller this time yeah, so I
- 45:41did the 32 for my first ultra race and then the 50 last year
- 45:46another hundred this year just. Stepping up.
- 45:48Yeah, just. Stepping it up, are you excited
- 45:51for that one? Is that gonna be a big a race
- 45:52this year? Yeah, it's gonna be an A race.
- 45:55I I already have my Pacers picked out.
- 45:58Nice. So is yours truly gonna be
- 46:00Clark, You, Payson, or? No, he'll, he'll be in there.
- 46:03Yeah, yeah, him. I'll need some miles at some
- 46:05point. Yeah.
- 46:08And then I'm roping Taylor and of course, but that's, is it a
- 46:12week after? It's a week after Bubba's, so
- 46:14she's going to be hurt in a bit. So she's doing Bubbas.
- 46:18Yeah, yeah. Are you doing Bubbas?
- 46:20Oh, not this year. No, out on Bubbas.
- 46:23You're out. I'm officially out on Bubbas.
- 46:25I found it a lot more fun just visiting my friends who are
- 46:28doing Bubbas. Yeah, yeah.
- 46:30While they're in the pain cave. I'm just like, ha ha ha ha ha.
- 46:32Yeah. So we'll be at Bubba's saying hi
- 46:34to everybody. But yeah, yeah.
- 46:36No, that's awesome. And then, yeah, Taylor's going
- 46:38to bounce back. Give me some miles.
- 46:39Yeah, so she's going to get some miles in with and then our
- 46:43friend Michael Henry, he's going to be there, but he just had
- 46:46knee surgery, but he was just pacing out in Coca Dona, so I
- 46:48guess he's good now. Wow, Lyla Goudreau.
- 46:51Yeah, yeah. Wow.
- 46:52OK, hometown Mainer. Yeah, well.
- 46:56Place that is crazy. Yeah, she's a crusher.
- 46:59Yeah, she is. Yeah, just throws down.
- 47:02That is so insane. Do you know her final time?
- 47:04I just thought she finished. I know that race is wild.
- 47:07I think the youngest finisher. Oh really?
- 47:09Or the youngest female finisher She was.
- 47:12Yeah, yeah, I saw that. Wow.
- 47:14Yeah, well, Cocodono is something I want to talk to you
- 47:16guys about. Clark is Clark is on top of.
- 47:19He gives the group chat little updates on every race, all the
- 47:22storylines. And Cocodono is obviously an
- 47:25exciting one. But Rachel Entrekin?
- 47:27Holy crap. Oh my God.
- 47:29So insane. I mean watching that just
- 47:31literally the the finish just goosebumps.
- 47:34Incredible. Yeah, yeah, she's absolute idol
- 47:38status. Yeah.
- 47:39What do you think? Did you see there was some
- 47:42controversy? I wish I shouldn't just jump
- 47:45right into the controversy here. How?
- 47:47Did you miss this? Yeah.
- 47:48How'd you miss it Did did I get something Clark didn't get?
- 47:50It was Francesco Pupi. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 47:53Talking. Trash talking trash about
- 47:55Cocodona, what'd you think about?
- 47:57I almost sent that to the group, but I was like, I don't want to
- 47:59overwhelm these guys. Clark sometimes picks and
- 48:02chooses. Especially because I usually
- 48:04like text the group at like 5:00 in the morning.
- 48:07It's. Early.
- 48:08Yeah, that's that's the. Check it out guys.
- 48:10Well, he has it on in the background literally all day,
- 48:12every day. Yeah, I know.
- 48:15It's crazy. You consume podcasts like no
- 48:17other. Oh yeah, it's bad, Yeah.
- 48:20I'd say it's good for me, Ally. Ally showed me that you can
- 48:23speed up podcasts. Yeah, yeah.
- 48:25So I'm at like 1 .4. Yeah.
- 48:28So yeah, I remember that day. That was life changing for you.
- 48:30It was. He was so mind blown.
- 48:34So this is Ali's problem now that I can just crush podcast.
- 48:38Yeah, no, that's that is awesome.
- 48:40I yeah, I can, I feel like that's just how you live your
- 48:44life and your run just 1.4 speed.
- 48:46Just always go go go both of you guys because Ali you are like
- 48:51you work I I you work 60 hours a week train 1,000,000 hours a
- 48:57week. You're posting content which
- 48:59content content is is time consuming.
- 49:04It is hard it. Is so time consuming.
- 49:06Yeah, I was doing it everyday and then I was like 4 days a
- 49:08week is fine. And then I was like, you know,
- 49:10why am I even still doing this? And then it's like, I'll say
- 49:13that and I'll be like, oh, I'm not going to post anymore.
- 49:15And then I'll have a company reach out to me and they're
- 49:17like, you want to sample some of this for free?
- 49:19And then they're like, we love your content.
- 49:21And I'm like, oh, OK, I guess I'll keep posting.
- 49:22I'm back in. Yeah, but then I'll also like at
- 49:25White Lake some the support and everybody coming up and saying
- 49:28they're like, oh, we love your content, we follow all the time.
- 49:30And I'm like, Oh my God, really? Yeah, OK.
- 49:33It's good. It's like what I wish I could
- 49:35put out there. I just, I don't have the
- 49:37capacity to do that. So I'm going a different
- 49:39direction. This is kind of an interesting
- 49:43question. Hopefully you're OK talking
- 49:44about it because you have a couple sponsors or some people
- 49:47that you know, hook you up with stuff or whatever.
- 49:49I don't know the what is your goal is like are you trying to
- 49:54to get into a sponsored runner kind of state?
- 49:58I don't. Know I mean well, so I guess I
- 50:03mean I like having the sponsors that I have now certainly helps
- 50:07We're saving a ton of money, but I don't know that I'm like
- 50:10trying to just be fully sponsored full time.
- 50:14I don't. I don't.
- 50:16I don't think I'm that good. Yeah, but no, I like the
- 50:20sponsors that I have now. I think I'll just keep doing
- 50:23what I'm doing. But.
- 50:24But I tell her she's relatable. I think that's the one thing
- 50:28that stands out is she's very relatable.
- 50:30The DAW content, the work stuff. Yeah.
- 50:33You know, so it helps. Yeah, you have a you're you're
- 50:36not just a runner. You're what?
- 50:38I forget the the exactly. I should have really brushed up
- 50:40on this, but a chemist, an author, she has a book out dog
- 50:46Mom books a reader. So you, you're.
- 50:49Yeah. How do you guys have time for
- 50:50for all this stuff? Well, so I actually did leave my
- 50:53second job as a barista, which was sad.
- 50:56I did really enjoy that. But no, I stopped some middle
- 51:01March. I stopped working there.
- 51:03So no more 60 hour weeks, just 40.
- 51:05OK, Yeah. Because I figured, you know,
- 51:08ultra season is upon us and I wanted to keep the sponsor that
- 51:13we have. So I kind of needed to keep
- 51:15performing. So I was like, all right, I
- 51:18guess I'll have to like go the barista job.
- 51:20Yeah, that's good though you got.
- 51:21It more time for training. Yeah.
- 51:23Yeah, it definitely allowed more time for training because I was
- 51:25working all day on Saturday. That was crazy.
- 51:27So now Saturdays I have just completely for training.
- 51:30And working before work too. Yeah, yeah.
- 51:33I was waking up at 3:00 in the morning so I could work at
- 51:36Starbucks from 4:00 until 7:30 and then go to my other job 7:30
- 51:43to go. To a four to 7:00 AM shift.
- 51:46Yeah, yeah, yeah. So yeah, I would only do that
- 51:49twice a week, which were like my rest days.
- 51:52Yeah, so crazy. I know.
- 51:55That you guys are just go, go, go.
- 51:58I mean power couple Clark, you need to get sponsored by Virgin
- 52:01or you you're like the White Mountains.
- 52:03You are one of like the the runners.
- 52:06I feel like everyone wants to hear from the White Mountains.
- 52:08Anymore, I don't get, I don't get up there anymore.
- 52:10Well, you don't get up there. That's a problem.
- 52:12But you should get up there more because you used to be all
- 52:15everywhere. Everyone's talking about Clark.
- 52:17No, I know. Yeah.
- 52:19You don't go up as much anymore, do you?
- 52:22It's just the grid ruined it. Do you dislike some of the
- 52:25peaks? I just put out a a clip just
- 52:27trying to get more people riled up hating on a couple peaks
- 52:31which I really it's. More it's more of trails, trails
- 52:34like fishing Jimmy. I hate that trail.
- 52:37And what other trail don't I like a lend a hand trail?
- 52:42Don't like lend a hand? I don't like lend a hand either.
- 52:44That's false. Advertisement What other trails
- 52:48don't I like? Oh.
- 52:51Beaver Brook. Beaver Brook, Yeah.
- 52:54Gross. Gross.
- 52:55Not not fun. Not fun.
- 52:57Gorge Brook, great trail. Beautiful.
- 53:00Yeah. Glen Cliff even good too.
- 53:02Yeah. But yeah, it's I I don't mind
- 53:05the piece. It's more of like specific
- 53:06trails. Yeah.
- 53:07So Osseo Trail. I don't like Osseo Trail.
- 53:12Well, good. This year, no one like no one
- 53:14gets. It no one gets it, yeah.
- 53:16So everyone's got to be real creative this year, yeah?
- 53:19Yeah. What do you think about the the
- 53:21penny this year? I had someone reach out to me
- 53:23asking about alternative routes. And I was hoping to do a penny
- 53:28loop. I know, I really, I've never
- 53:30done a penny. Yeah, I'm like, yeah, No go,
- 53:34Clark. I don't know, maybe someone will
- 53:36find something that makes it faster.
- 53:39But then it's. Faster.
- 53:40But then it's. Not a real.
- 53:42Is it a real pemmy if it doesn't start and end where it's?
- 53:45That's a good. Loop.
- 53:47Yeah. What is the only?
- 53:48What is like the only alternatives?
- 53:51Liberty. Liberty.
- 53:52Go up liberty bomb Osseo. Yeah, RIP to Bond.
- 54:00Can you still go on that section of the trail though or is that
- 54:02shut down? It's.
- 54:04You can get up to Osseo. You can get up to Osseo OK
- 54:07closer to the bridge. Yeah, but I don't know.
- 54:10It's a lot of downhill. You get clerk, you see, you get,
- 54:14you get a lot of the climbs out of the way.
- 54:17Yeah. Do you think it would be easier
- 54:19than going up from Gale River? Oh yeah, really is another one
- 54:23of those trails. Clark has to do it.
- 54:25No, I'm not going to test this theory.
- 54:27Yeah, you got to be the guy you have to go do.
- 54:28Both. This is where bring Clark back
- 54:30to the Whites you go do both and and report.
- 54:33Back being a test stomach. Yeah, we'll have Alley go one
- 54:36way, I'll go the other. Yeah.
- 54:37Oh, there you go. Yeah, one car ride, you get both
- 54:40of them done. Yeah, there we go.
- 54:43Yeah, what are what? Everyone's got a bushwhack to
- 54:45Alice Head. I'm sure some people are going
- 54:46to do some illegal things. I almost said something a little
- 54:50bit. I'm sure a couple of people
- 54:51would. I hope people don't plan on
- 54:52crossing the river. That's just a bad idea.
- 54:54Oh, so they're shining the bridge?
- 54:57I think so. I think wouldn't I feel, just
- 54:59feel like people will start on the other side and just kind of
- 55:01like snake it. But nothing will be official.
- 55:03We'll arrest anyone who does it. This year.
- 55:06Citizens are podcast arrest. Yeah, yeah.
- 55:09Oh, I get what you're saying. Now, Yeah, yeah, I don't know.
- 55:12That being I'm just thinking of the of the gritters.
- 55:15They're like, this just makes owl's head even worse.
- 55:17So hard. Although you're an owl's head
- 55:19advocate. I am I am an owl's head guy.
- 55:22Yeah, that's crazy. You love owl's head, but you
- 55:24hate some. Well, I guess I just don't like
- 55:27the trails. The trails, the trails, the
- 55:28trails. It's probably because I find
- 55:29them hard. Maybe that's why I don't like
- 55:31them. I mean, yeah, some of those
- 55:33trails are hard. Beaverbrook is really hard yeah,
- 55:39Ally big efforts this year. So mid state any anything else.
- 55:46I know you have one coming up that you're floating.
- 55:48You can just tease this. Keep it a tease, but you did
- 55:50post. Honestly, I did post about it a
- 55:52little bit. I didn't already say what it
- 55:54was, but also I told pretty much everybody at Whaley 'cause I had
- 55:57so many people come up to me and they're like, what is this 50
- 55:59Miller you're doing? Yeah, So I was like, all right,
- 56:02you know what? It's close enough.
- 56:03No, I'm going for the MSG FKT OK.
- 56:07Yep. Unsupported, unsupported, very
- 56:09exciting. That's coming up.
- 56:11So that would be another like big kind of a ish effort.
- 56:13Yeah, that was my a effort for the spring for sure.
- 56:16Nice, that'll be that'll be sweet.
- 56:18Yeah. Clark, you have any any words of
- 56:20advice to not get carried down Monadnock?
- 56:23Oh, man. Oh, he knows.
- 56:25Him and Larson. They're going to be on the other
- 56:26side of me, carrying me down. Yeah, I already told her all she
- 56:28needs to do is just worry about getting to the top of Monadnock.
- 56:31Yeah, I'll get her down. OK, So she can just empty the
- 56:34tank, Yeah. Yeah.
- 56:36So where does that route end, Manana?
- 56:38Do you go down? At the summit.
- 56:40Oh. Yeah, it's summit.
- 56:41Just summit. Yeah.
- 56:42OK, Yeah. Nice.
- 56:43Nice. Very cool.
- 56:45Oh yeah. Yeah, I was going to, I was
- 56:46saying unsupported. Then you carry.
- 56:48Yeah. OK.
- 56:48Yeah, yeah. Beautiful.
- 56:50That'd be awesome. You you get your your FKT
- 56:52potential and then you just carry down a little cart.
- 56:55Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
- 56:57Clark, you have any big efforts this year that you want to
- 57:00showcase? Not really.
- 57:01Watch. 2 Dodge. Watch the dodge.
- 57:04Well, I don't know. I got to go back eventually.
- 57:07Yeah, Yeah. Yeah.
- 57:07So why not this year? Get that demon done.
- 57:10Yeah, got to get that. Yeah, yeah.
- 57:11So yeah, usually things that don't go well, I always kind of
- 57:15make my way go, make my way back, Yeah, and give it another
- 57:19shot because for some odd reason I'm more of like, you know,
- 57:22takes me more than one try, which is fine.
- 57:24I feel like that's a lot of people though, like there are a
- 57:27lot of amazing efforts that you think about that people have
- 57:29just done before and and struck out on Yeah, so that's cool.
- 57:34Yeah, watch. It'll be a good one.
- 57:36Are you you're sniffing at the Whites 100 eventually, I'm sure.
- 57:39Oh God, that's that's you have to go in Beaverbrook, 80 miles
- 57:46in. Yikes.
- 57:47Yeah, that route is cool though. Yeah, it is so cool.
- 57:52Yeah, I think that's like the ultimate one of my build up
- 57:54ones. Yeah, I think that's everyone's
- 57:56goal in the end is to be able to do that, especially if you're
- 58:00from here. Yeah, locals.
- 58:03How would you compare that route to other routes Other.
- 58:06You know the. Whites 100.
- 58:07The Whites 100. Clark.
- 58:08Can I think it takes the cake for everything, everything
- 58:11anywhere? Yeah, like that.
- 58:13Like just like look like I've listened to the Jack Hensel
- 58:16podcast. I hate to admit this like
- 58:18probably four or five times from the Backcountry.
- 58:23It like he's like a like a like, I don't even know, a different
- 58:28tier of athlete. Just listen to him and like the
- 58:31fact that he got it to 25 hours. That's insane.
- 58:35Insane because if you like check out those paces like to go sub
- 58:3924 like crazy. And if you compare the times to
- 58:43other ultras like UTMB, their course records well under that.
- 58:47And I, you know, I would assume if Jack goes to UTMB and has a
- 58:50good day, he's going to be close to the course record.
- 58:52Yeah, I think so. I I don't know.
- 58:55He, I feel like he's post, he doesn't like UTMB, like the
- 58:57whole Oh yeah, Yeah. But we need Jack to go to UTMB
- 59:00because then we have, we have proof of all the FK TS that he's
- 59:03done here. Like they're religious.
- 59:06Yeah. So I don't know, the whites 100
- 59:09is like that's like the I don't know, that's like the prize.
- 59:12Right there. The prize jewel.
- 59:14Yeah, no, I agree with that. But yeah, I don't really have
- 59:17anything really planned. Just every day going out and
- 59:20getting after. I just love to run.
- 59:22I know you do. You were like, it comes off
- 59:25anytime I see you on the trails, like for like every couple
- 59:28months. We probably more back in the
- 59:29day, but we crossed paths at the Unks and you're just excited to
- 59:33be out there every time. Do you think it will ever die?
- 59:37Oh hell no. Oh hell.
- 59:40No, no way. No.
- 59:43Way Yeah, yeah, I love it so and if she's doing it too like just
- 59:47it's just even more fun now because we're now we're both in
- 59:50it yeah so yeah. I want to talk gear shoes
- 59:54specifically because you are I've talked a little bit about
- 59:57it, but I just don't know as much like you know, you know
- 59:59things. I've tried a lot of shoes.
- 1:00:01You've tried a lot of shoes. Give us give us your White
- 1:00:03Mountains technical mountain shoes.
- 1:00:06VJ Max Original, the first, the first.
- 1:00:10Those were the best shoes I've ever worn ever.
- 1:00:14Those were my favorite. They got rid of them.
- 1:00:17The Max twos aren't as good. They kind of look like
- 1:00:20basketball shoes, which is fine. Yeah, they didn't work for me.
- 1:00:26The Ultra Threes, I was kind of wearing a lot, but those, the
- 1:00:29stack, you got to really focus when you're wearing those or
- 1:00:32you're going to roll your ankle. I used to like the topos, but
- 1:00:36like the topos, they heat up the bottom of my foot too much.
- 1:00:39Really. I think it's 'cause they're kind
- 1:00:41of like too wide, which is crazy.
- 1:00:44Right now, though, the Mount Coast, everyone's wearing them.
- 1:00:47I like the T ones. You take out the quick laces,
- 1:00:50put in normal laces, real good. OK H ones are OK.
- 1:00:55OK, good Hokas. I'm out on the Hokas.
- 1:00:58Out on Hokas. The Hoka slips, also known as
- 1:01:02speed goats. No, thank you.
- 1:01:04Yeah. The Mafate Speeds original.
- 1:01:08Like the Mafate Speed fours. Those are pretty good.
- 1:01:10Yeah. For a Hoka shoe.
- 1:01:11I like those. Yeah.
- 1:01:12They're kind of like a tank, though.
- 1:01:14Yeah. Built the Speeds.
- 1:01:18I think that's it. Yeah, I'm a big shoe guy.
- 1:01:21I know you're you're always on top of it you.
- 1:01:23I'm close to getting a the mount to coast.
- 1:01:26I think that's my next shoe purchase will be the mount to
- 1:01:29coast. Have you tried the Las Portivas
- 1:01:31Prodigy Pros? I I bought a pair, they didn't
- 1:01:33fit. Oh.
- 1:01:34I know. But those those fancy looking
- 1:01:36shoes? Yeah, they go so.
- 1:01:37Small, but when I put them on I said wow.
- 1:01:43Their shoes want to go this. Feels like a $200 shield.
- 1:01:47Yeah. So I think someday when I save
- 1:01:49up my money, yeah, and I get the right size, I'll definitely buy
- 1:01:52a pair. And it's going to be the white
- 1:01:53pair, the newer ones that came out that fresh.
- 1:01:56Yeah. So nice.
- 1:01:57I have a pair. You got the white ones?
- 1:01:58Yeah. Did Connor get the white ones?
- 1:02:00I don't know if you got the white I.
- 1:02:01Hope he got the white ones. Yeah, I know Ron has the red
- 1:02:04ones. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, the
- 1:02:06original ones, but yeah, the white ones.
- 1:02:07Home man. They are nice, but I tell
- 1:02:11Jocelyn I'm like, I'm, I'm taking these for a ride today.
- 1:02:13I'm excited, yeah. That's on my birthday list.
- 1:02:16Nice. When is that coming up before
- 1:02:18trail season? Yeah, it is actually.
- 1:02:22Soon, is that a hint? No, those shoes want to go and
- 1:02:24the grip is really good. The grip is good.
- 1:02:27So I like those. Ally, what are your what are
- 1:02:30your favorite shoes? Do you have any road shoes that
- 1:02:32you just can't let go and you take on?
- 1:02:33Trails. So right now I think I'm
- 1:02:35cycling. I always have like 6 or 8 pairs
- 1:02:37of shoes at a time. So for Rd. shoes right now I'm
- 1:02:45wearing a lot of the Nike Pegasus, the Saucony of Dorfins.
- 1:02:51Those are OK. Yeah, I'm a big Brooks girl.
- 1:02:55I've always really liked the Brooks.
- 1:02:56Brooks Ghost. I had a pair of those.
- 1:02:58Yeah the ghosts are pretty good. I usually like the adrenaline
- 1:03:01for like long chill Rd. runs. Yeah, I don't know that I really
- 1:03:07have a pair of Rd. shoes that I love a ton.
- 1:03:13I know that I'm a die hard for my hookah challengers for the
- 1:03:15trails even though he says he doesn't doesn't like.
- 1:03:18Those outside the the front door I don't.
- 1:03:22Want to say the first ones I tried were the hookah speed goat
- 1:03:24and I will say I did. I rolled my ankle a lot.
- 1:03:28But the challengers have been through a lot with me.
- 1:03:30They've done just about every FKT and every race with me and I
- 1:03:35like my topo mountain racers. I think those are good.
- 1:03:38I also have the mountain coast T ones, those aren't bad.
- 1:03:42Hated the quick laces though so those went immediately.
- 1:03:45Yeah, that's a good, that's a good tip.
- 1:03:47Yeah, yeah, the once you put the regular laces in there, much
- 1:03:51better. I don't really.
- 1:03:53I tried the Mountain Coast P1 for Rhodes.
- 1:03:56They're OK. I feel like everybody raves
- 1:03:58about them. I don't know that I love them.
- 1:04:01OK, not sold in the buzz. Not sold.
- 1:04:03Yeah. Do you have any super shoes for
- 1:04:06like a fast? I do, yeah.
- 1:04:08So I have the the Nike Vaporfly. I do have two super shoes.
- 1:04:12I tried the Nike Vaporfly, which is the cheaper version of the
- 1:04:16Alphafly and I've had them for I think 120 miles.
- 1:04:21I wore them for the half marathon that I just PR D in.
- 1:04:24Nice. I love them.
- 1:04:27Those are great. And then the other ones are the
- 1:04:28ASICS. Couldn't even tell you.
- 1:04:31It's like mega something. Yeah, I don't even know which
- 1:04:34one honestly not a huge fan because they they RIP my heels
- 1:04:37up so bad so, but because I spent like 150 bucks on them,
- 1:04:42which isn't even that much, but I'll like Katy tape on my heel.
- 1:04:45So then I still wear them just 'cause I want to get like use
- 1:04:48out of them. But there's a couple shoes like
- 1:04:50that, like I do cycle through shoes like you were saying a
- 1:04:52lot. And I feel like there are some
- 1:04:54that I just like skip out on the cycle a lot.
- 1:04:56And then sometimes like, no, I just have.
- 1:04:58To you have to wear them? Yeah, 'cause then I got to get
- 1:05:00them out of the cycle, but not prematurely.
- 1:05:04I have to get them out of the cycle.
- 1:05:06Would you PR the half at? I got a 233, sorry 133. 1:33
- 1:05:13Nice. It's gonna say 1:30.
- 1:05:15Three. Yeah, yeah, yeah. 233 Holy
- 1:05:16smokes. Yeah, that was like the one road
- 1:05:18race I ever signed up for, and of course it's cancelled.
- 1:05:21Yeah, yeah. So then it was virtual for.
- 1:05:24The roads, that was the the Hampton half, right?
- 1:05:26Yeah, yeah, yeah, Yep, yeah. So we ended up I appeared in the
- 1:05:305K10K and half all in that one race.
- 1:05:32Huge. Yeah.
- 1:05:33So that was that was nice. That's like just trail speed
- 1:05:37translates just. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:40Especially because I think the last last time I did 1/2 was
- 1:05:42like 2019 and it was the Hampton half.
- 1:05:44And I was so stoked that I ran like I think it was a 727 pace.
- 1:05:48And then now years later, I'm not even trying specifically for
- 1:05:541/2 marathon and I got, was it like a seven O 3 pace, Seven O 4
- 1:05:57pace? I can't math, so yeah.
- 1:05:59But yeah, like the last five miles were all under 7 minute
- 1:06:02pace and I was just like, damn, never in my life have I been
- 1:06:05running like 650 paces. Yeah, that's awesome.
- 1:06:10And that's without even like I've noticed, because if you
- 1:06:13want to be fast on trails, you have to be strong.
- 1:06:16And fit. And shorter Rd. races is about
- 1:06:19power. It's just like if you have the
- 1:06:22turnover and the specificity before it, like you can actually
- 1:06:24do pretty well. That's why, Clark, you were
- 1:06:26saying after the half you're like, oh, I didn't know I could
- 1:06:28run that fast. I was like.
- 1:06:30Clark, that was. Surprising.
- 1:06:30OK, you, you know. You are fast, Clark tries to
- 1:06:35tell people. Is not.
- 1:06:36Fast. Well, did you know that?
- 1:06:39He said. Didn't you?
- 1:06:40We set the course record in Arizona on that race.
- 1:06:43No, I was a little few seconds off few.
- 1:06:45Seconds off a few seconds, Yeah, Guy goes in first.
- 1:06:47K. It was an 8K8K.
- 1:06:50Also, I was doing the marathon, so I signed Clark up for the 8K
- 1:06:53trail run that they were doing at the same time because I was
- 1:06:55like you. Know I was also in sand it.
- 1:06:58Was it? Was what?
- 1:06:58Kind of course, yeah. What do I wear for?
- 1:07:00This. OK but you literally were a few
- 1:07:03seconds off of the course record.
- 1:07:04Blows everyone else out of the water.
- 1:07:07I mean, you had an incredible time.
- 1:07:09It ran with a vest on too. That's when you know.
- 1:07:12You. Know you don't know what you're
- 1:07:15doing. Yeah.
- 1:07:17I didn't have anything to hold my phone but yeah, now I'm a
- 1:07:20waste belt guy so. Imagine you're in.
- 1:07:24You're in Arizona, you just signed up for an 8K run and you
- 1:07:27get passed by this guy from New Hampshire in a vest.
- 1:07:30Yeah. That is, yeah.
- 1:07:32That's the best part. When they're asking where, where
- 1:07:34are you from? New Hampshire, They're like,
- 1:07:36where's that I was? Like, oh God, where is that?
- 1:07:41Oh, man. So you're a converted belt guy.
- 1:07:44Oh, yeah, yeah, I'm trying to, but it's slowly trying the naked
- 1:07:48belt. No, I haven't tried it.
- 1:07:50Do you have the raid belt? No, I have the Solomon belt.
- 1:07:52Oh God. Well, the thing about the raid
- 1:07:56belt is they're expensive. They're so expensive.
- 1:07:59How can a belt be so expensive? Is it worth it?
- 1:08:02Connor and Lyle. Yeah.
- 1:08:04They say it's amazing. Yeah, I'm a naked belt guy.
- 1:08:07Naked. Yeah.
- 1:08:08You can fit a lot of stuff in there.
- 1:08:10Yeah, I always wear mine. Yeah, I'm always wondering, can
- 1:08:13you fit a leader comfortably? That is my cause.
- 1:08:15Like in a vest, a leader, 2 flasks, 2 flasks, 2 flasks.
- 1:08:19That's why I was running with that White Lake.
- 1:08:20I had two flasks in there to start off.
- 1:08:23If the flask is like full, it's kind of weird, but like if you
- 1:08:27drink a little bit out of it, it'll form to you OK?
- 1:08:29And yeah, it feels good OK. But yeah, I think I've done like
- 1:08:322 flasks, a bunch of gels even. Like like a jacket too, yeah.
- 1:08:37So yeah, yeah, I don't. Maybe I just need to just pony
- 1:08:41up and get one. Naked belts are only like 30
- 1:08:44bucks I think or 50. Yeah, maybe I get a naked.
- 1:08:46Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:08:47Yeah, maybe that's the way. Because that was like the
- 1:08:49original before I heard about Nate.
- 1:08:50Everyone's like the naked belts are really.
- 1:08:52Good. Yeah, they're really good.
- 1:08:52Because I used to to just have a Psalm and, like, shoestring one
- 1:08:55that I would just carry my phone in.
- 1:08:57But then Mike King gave me like a big one that is more like,
- 1:09:00yeah, it's red, it's blue. But I it has like a Fanny pack
- 1:09:04almost in the back. Yeah.
- 1:09:05Clark knows everything. Clark.
- 1:09:09Knows I I'm telling you after work when we get home he's on my
- 1:09:12laptop literally just researching random stuff about
- 1:09:14running all the time. Yeah, it's so funny.
- 1:09:19So funny. I mean, it's good.
- 1:09:21I, I'm, I'm looking into this stuff all the time.
- 1:09:23Like I'm always like, what's the, what's the weight
- 1:09:25difference? Need to know weights, need to
- 1:09:27know reviews. I think it's just hard because
- 1:09:29there's so much information where I just will go in circles
- 1:09:33about, oh, I want this. And I'm like, oh, but then I get
- 1:09:36on some other thing and then I'm like, I don't know what I want.
- 1:09:38Yeah, it takes me forever to buy something.
- 1:09:40Yeah, like Sally will be like, just buy it.
- 1:09:42I'm like, no, I can't. I'm like, how do you know if
- 1:09:46you're going to like it or not? Yeah, so.
- 1:09:49So what do you think is the best?
- 1:09:50Give me your best kit for if you were doing let's say a hot
- 1:09:55traverse for speed, what would the best kit be like?
- 1:10:00Lightest weight, fastest kit. We can go to brands or not
- 1:10:03brands like are you belts? Are you what shoes are you
- 1:10:07wearing? What do you think?
- 1:10:09I still think it's pretty frowned upon to wear just a belt
- 1:10:11in the whites. I think if people change that
- 1:10:16attitude, yeah, I think a belt would be prime fast.
- 1:10:21So waist belt, waist belt. And then I haven't tried the
- 1:10:27mount to coast in the whites yet.
- 1:10:28I tried them at Monadnock, yeah, which is pretty rocky and
- 1:10:32slabby. Good tests and they did pretty
- 1:10:34good. And it was wet.
- 1:10:35Yeah, it was wet. So yeah, I think the Mount to
- 1:10:38Coast will get you through. Yeah.
- 1:10:41But I think at the end of the day, like probably wearing a
- 1:10:44vest to make sure you have Patagonia Houdini.
- 1:10:48That's probably the best jacket on earth.
- 1:10:50Yeah, I have one. I think it's a black diamond,
- 1:10:53but same thing. So light.
- 1:10:55It's my favorite. It's my favorite thing ever.
- 1:10:57I. Think I wore that all winter.
- 1:10:58Yeah. I didn't have to pull anything
- 1:11:01heavier out. Yeah, that's crazy.
- 1:11:03I wear 1 little thermal AT shirt and then I pull that out when
- 1:11:06it's really cold and if it's more than that I'm just going to
- 1:11:09go do a a tree line thing. Something in in the trees.
- 1:11:13Yeah, that is a that is a big hack that that little light
- 1:11:16waist bivy. Do you think Ally you have your
- 1:11:20full kit built out for the trails or is he still like you
- 1:11:24think you got the gear? I think, yeah, I think what I'm
- 1:11:27doing is I'm just going to bring one liter filter flasks.
- 1:11:32Yeah. Solomon filter flasks.
- 1:11:33Are awesome. Yeah, Katahdin, is that the?
- 1:11:36Yeah, Solomon has their. Solomon too.
- 1:11:38Yeah, I actually have a quick question.
- 1:11:41Mine just has a bunch of black mold on the Katata.
- 1:11:44And how many months can I go without?
- 1:11:47Is it time? It's time, yeah.
- 1:11:49It's time. It's time.
- 1:11:50OK, OK. No, no questions here.
- 1:11:53I thought Clark would be like, oh, you know, I've.
- 1:11:55Used well before she moved in all my soft flash, I thought
- 1:12:00they were in great shape. They were not in great shape.
- 1:12:02I looked at those caps and I was like whoa.
- 1:12:05Yeah, the caps, they get disgusted.
- 1:12:08I didn't know that you could pull them all apart.
- 1:12:10There's like 3 pieces there, yeah.
- 1:12:12So imagine that he's not actually washing them for I
- 1:12:14don't even know how long. So this is actually something
- 1:12:17this is a funny because mine get the same way, but I I just would
- 1:12:20pull them out and I clean them with like Q-tips and and soap
- 1:12:23and like get it's really hard, but it it it takes a while.
- 1:12:26But when you know before you do that, they're just like it
- 1:12:29builds up. I don't know if it's going to
- 1:12:30have a drink mix. I think that's what it is.
- 1:12:32That's. Probably.
- 1:12:34But it doesn't make me sick or anything.
- 1:12:35And I'm like, am I immune to it? Am I?
- 1:12:38Is the water not touching it? What's going?
- 1:12:40On here is it OK? Don't keep testing it.
- 1:12:44Yeah, OK. I need new I need new Katata
- 1:12:47filters and flasks. Yeah, those flesh filter flasks
- 1:12:50are awesome. Do you have the the new little
- 1:12:52ones? Have you seen those?
- 1:12:55The new salm and flask have a little top like that big that
- 1:12:59it's harder to pour powders into and stuff.
- 1:13:02That doesn't sound convenient. I like the the snap up snap over
- 1:13:05caps. Yeah, open caps, those things.
- 1:13:07Are sick 'cause when we were doing that aid station there was
- 1:13:10a couple of people with it and like screwing those.
- 1:13:12Off sometimes. But the pop up.
- 1:13:14Ones. Yeah, I remember that.
- 1:13:15That was cool. I have to write that down 'cause
- 1:13:18I've been meaning to get some of those.
- 1:13:19Yeah, that is. That is huge.
- 1:13:21Probably so much faster, yeah. Because when I put them in my
- 1:13:25belt, I'll have the flask on like I usually have a mix in
- 1:13:28both of mine, so I'll have the regular top and then it screw
- 1:13:32on, which has the cap, but you can't really drink out of it
- 1:13:34because you don't get the mix. So then I have to do the switch
- 1:13:38and I'm on the trails like yeah, do this thing, try not to drop
- 1:13:41my only calories, you know. So the caps are good.
- 1:13:44Yeah, good thing. I think the little ones that I'm
- 1:13:47talking about are good because they must be lighter.
- 1:13:51Maybe. But like how much lighter?
- 1:13:52I know it's like how much I. Feel like that's negligible at
- 1:13:54that point. I know this is like the
- 1:13:57marathon. The guy runs it in three ounce
- 1:13:58shoes. Like dude, what do we do?
- 1:14:00I. Was going to say like that was
- 1:14:01cool. Does it really help that much?
- 1:14:03I don't know. Yeah, It's it's like just get
- 1:14:06faster. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:14:08Just train. Just train.
- 1:14:09Get up. Work.
- 1:14:10Hard train. Yeah, OK, funny.
- 1:14:13Clark, you're on top of everything, all the all the
- 1:14:16news, all the media and stuff. What do you think are some big
- 1:14:19stories going into the trail season this year, maybe in New
- 1:14:21England? Oh, here we go.
- 1:14:23What are some things that you're keyed in on?
- 1:14:26I don't know about locally. Locally, I'm excited for Western
- 1:14:29States with Jim Walmsley. Yeah.
- 1:14:31And then you got Poupei and you got Seth and Adam Peterman.
- 1:14:37Oh, man. Zach Miller.
- 1:14:39Yeah. Hayden Hawks unreal, young and
- 1:14:42fit. Hans Troyer Like what I.
- 1:14:46Know. Look how excited you're getting
- 1:14:48him right now. These races are just getting so
- 1:14:51insane. Yeah, yeah, if the weather, if
- 1:14:54it's not hot. Yeah.
- 1:14:56The record's going down. Going down for sure.
- 1:14:58This is going to get smoked. Yeah.
- 1:15:00Smoked. Yeah.
- 1:15:01Yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 1:15:02And killing Renee, of course. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:15:04This is, oh, this is who was I talking to with this about?
- 1:15:08Is Killian getting a little bit past his prime?
- 1:15:12Is it a sad, a little or no? He's still in the mix, third
- 1:15:15last year. So that's that's crazy.
- 1:15:18Yeah. So.
- 1:15:20What's going on? Good.
- 1:15:22This is by one of my coworkers. What's up, man?
- 1:15:24We're doing a podcast. Busted.
- 1:15:33So OK, Killian still in it. He could get the course record.
- 1:15:36Yeah, he could Podium, podium, podium.
- 1:15:42OK, We're we're not out on him. And the women's field is getting
- 1:15:45stacked. Yes, totally stacked.
- 1:15:47I'm not as keen on that. Keen on but.
- 1:15:52Oh, it's, I will say. It's hard, hard.
- 1:15:56Yeah, yeah, she's my favorite. Yeah.
- 1:15:59I don't know. Is Courtney going this year?
- 1:16:01I don't know. Who's going?
- 1:16:02Courtney's not. No, she's, I know.
- 1:16:05I mean, is Rachel Ectron going no, no.
- 1:16:08No, way too close. Way too close.
- 1:16:10I think Dan Green found out last year that you can't race Coca
- 1:16:13Dona. Yeah.
- 1:16:14And then Western states. Gotcha.
- 1:16:16Just. Can't recover.
- 1:16:17I mean, you never know with some of these people.
- 1:16:19They just do or they try everything right?
- 1:16:21Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:16:23OK. Yeah, that is exciting.
- 1:16:25I mean, the the big races are super and you're a Western
- 1:16:27states over a UTMB guy. Oh yes.
- 1:16:30Not even close. Oh yeah.
- 1:16:31UTMB. No thanks.
- 1:16:33Oh please, you still have it on. I'll still follow and watch.
- 1:16:36Yeah, yeah, yeah. But yeah, no Western states I'm
- 1:16:38glued too. Yeah, locally though, that
- 1:16:42Jigger Johnson race, Jigger Jigger Johnson 100 stacking up.
- 1:16:45Oh. I am so excited for that one.
- 1:16:48Yeah, that's going to be a good one.
- 1:16:50Yeah, he's in it. I know Connor's doing.
- 1:16:52Connor's in it. Oh, Connor's got to run for his
- 1:16:54money with Lexi. Lexi's in.
- 1:16:57Of course Lexi's in it. Oh man, I should know
- 1:16:59everybody's name running it, but I what I did notice though, this
- 1:17:03year there's a lot of people like out of state.
- 1:17:05Yes, actually. So a lot of people that that
- 1:17:09I've met through my Instagram have messaged me specifically
- 1:17:12about Jigger Johnson because they signed up and they're like,
- 1:17:14you know, can you post some reels like of you running on
- 1:17:18like some of the course or something so you can get an idea
- 1:17:20because they don't know how technical it is up here.
- 1:17:22Go to Hancock Notch, Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:17:25Show the people. Yeah, right.
- 1:17:26So, yeah. So that's exciting.
- 1:17:28So I actually meet a lot of new people.
- 1:17:30I think that is kind of like the the biggest race maybe in the
- 1:17:33ultra scene in New England that's really has captured some
- 1:17:36people. Yeah, definitely.
- 1:17:37It's heinous. Yeah, it is.
- 1:17:38It is heinous. That'll be exciting to watch.
- 1:17:42I would. I wanted to go back to Jigger
- 1:17:44this year, but I have a wedding. Damn.
- 1:17:47So I'm, I think I'm out. We've only got, we've only got
- 1:17:50Connors wedding. That's it this year, that's all
- 1:17:52we got. That's nice.
- 1:17:53Beginning of this summer too, so.
- 1:17:54We have. Because that's.
- 1:17:56June, right? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:57Yeah, June, because you used to just be slamming to weddings.
- 1:18:00Dude, Yeah, yeah, All my friends got married, yeah.
- 1:18:03That was before my time, so I didn't have to go.
- 1:18:06Yeah, that was wild. I used to just go to weddings
- 1:18:08every weekend. Yeah, everyone found love.
- 1:18:11Everyone, it's great finding love.
- 1:18:13Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Now it's my turn.
- 1:18:16Yeah, we're on. That two Week 2 year plan.
- 1:18:18Yeah, yeah. We weren't.
- 1:18:19We're like no rush, no rush, no rush.
- 1:18:21We were like, what's what are what races are on the calendar.
- 1:18:24We got a plan around the races. Yeah, we need to plan this.
- 1:18:27Word about the race. Calendar.
- 1:18:29Than our wedding. Than our wedding.
- 1:18:34OK. Yes and no, because I didn't
- 1:18:38want it to be like around anything big that we'd be
- 1:18:40training for. Yeah, I totally agree.
- 1:18:43I would literally be like sure it must be a shoulder season
- 1:18:46date. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:49I think another thing that I'm looking forward to, I think
- 1:18:51Bubba's this year is going to go off.
- 1:18:53Bubba's, yeah. I think with everyone seeing
- 1:18:56last year and then from the people that did last year, I
- 1:19:00think everyone figured it out, yeah.
- 1:19:03So I think that's going to go the distance it should.
- 1:19:08Yeah, and I know Connor. Connor's going back and he said
- 1:19:10he that's his main. Goal he's like yeah Bubba's yeah
- 1:19:14is Lucas going back? I haven't seen if he signed up
- 1:19:17OK. He signed up for a scutney
- 1:19:19though. A.
- 1:19:19Scutney yeah, I know. We saw Connor.
- 1:19:21Yeah, yeah, we saw that day of that maybe that that was a pop
- 1:19:24off my pillow kind of dance in that one.
- 1:19:27But yeah, and then Michael Connolly's back at Bubba's,
- 1:19:29yeah, which is huge. Can't care.
- 1:19:31How about you just like Riverlands?
- 1:19:33Riverlands smoked it. Wow.
- 1:19:34Yeah, it goes out running literally like the next day and
- 1:19:37he's like looks feel great, great smashes like a 730 page
- 1:19:39he. Loves to do that.
- 1:19:40I'm like. What are you?
- 1:19:42Are you human? I don't think so.
- 1:19:44Mike's the man. He's a machine.
- 1:19:45Dude, you and him were just like Iron Man back in the day.
- 1:19:48You guys would slam insane things and be like, all right
- 1:19:50tomorrow, Peme. Yeah, well, that's because we
- 1:19:52were chasing that grid. It's addicting.
- 1:19:55Yeah. Like we would literally wake up
- 1:19:56at like midnight drive to do a Prezi.
- 1:20:00And then the next day wake up again wicked early and do like
- 1:20:05cats. Carter's Mariah.
- 1:20:07So crazy. I don't know how we did that.
- 1:20:09Well, how much sleep were you getting?
- 1:20:12Not much, but. You also didn't have me in the
- 1:20:15picture then, or dogs, so you got a lot more time.
- 1:20:18Yeah, yeah, I guess a little less priorities, yeah, but
- 1:20:23hiking's important too, Yeah. Or running, whatever you want to
- 1:20:26call it. The grid.
- 1:20:27The grid. That is funny.
- 1:20:29Well, the grid is definitely. Yeah, it is a it is a chore.
- 1:20:32What was your grid finish? Oh, white face.
- 1:20:36White face. OK, so I actually that's a good
- 1:20:39peek. Yeah, it's not bad.
- 1:20:41I made the mistake. It was like shoulder season and
- 1:20:46I've never been close to being in trouble until that one day
- 1:20:50where I ended up there was no snow on the ground at like
- 1:20:55obviously like where you park. And I was like, oh, whatever,
- 1:20:59different story when you were towards the summit.
- 1:21:01And I got so cold. It was bad.
- 1:21:04It was scary. Yeah, it was so scary.
- 1:21:07I never ran down white face. I got to, like the cliffs,
- 1:21:10right? So I'm up there and I was like,
- 1:21:12I can't make it any further because, like, the summit's like
- 1:21:15in the woods way back there. And yeah, that was like my first
- 1:21:19like really close call. Were there people on your grid
- 1:21:22finish? Oh, that one.
- 1:21:24Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. My grid finish.
- 1:21:27Oh, oh, you were just saying that peak.
- 1:21:28Yeah, that's the one that put me on gridlock plus COVID.
- 1:21:32Oh, so you deal it. And.
- 1:21:34Then, yeah, so I didn't make it to white face.
- 1:21:36I went back down to my car, changed, got my snowshoes and
- 1:21:41then took Dicey Mills to pass a con away.
- 1:21:44I wanted nothing to do with white face after that, 'cause
- 1:21:47I'm like, wow, yeah, that was scary.
- 1:21:49That was close call, yeah. Oh my.
- 1:21:51Gosh, and I, that was back when I was.
- 1:21:53Yeah, yeah, yeah. Getting into it, just like, I
- 1:21:57don't know, I was, I was still in it.
- 1:21:59I was just like not thinking that day.
- 1:22:00I still had everything I needed. Yeah.
- 1:22:02But obviously which wasn't enough.
- 1:22:04Yeah, some days you just just not enough.
- 1:22:07Have you ever had any cold weather exposure times up there
- 1:22:12up in the whites? I don't know that I have in the
- 1:22:16Whites. I did when I was hiking in
- 1:22:18Norway. At the summit I fell into a
- 1:22:21frozen river and then I had to like, rundown.
- 1:22:24Frozen Frozen river at the summit in Norway.
- 1:22:27Yeah, it was bad. It was bad.
- 1:22:30I was out there because I was running a marathon in the Arctic
- 1:22:32Circle and I was like, oh, there's this sick hike called
- 1:22:36Trolltunga. Like I'm going to go do that.
- 1:22:39And I'm with my friend from Texas who's never hiked in her
- 1:22:41life. And I'm like, yeah, I think you
- 1:22:43can do it. Like, it'll be great.
- 1:22:45It was tough, man. Like it was wild.
- 1:22:49And it's like super hot at the base.
- 1:22:52And I mean, so much snow when when you're getting up there.
- 1:22:56I mean, the pictures are wild. And you know, my Texans seen
- 1:22:59snow like once in her life. So she's like, this is
- 1:23:03incredible. This is insane.
- 1:23:05So we make it up. We're going back down.
- 1:23:07And I just happened to slip on a rock and fall into a frozen
- 1:23:11river. And I'm like, I'm going to have
- 1:23:14to run down and change, otherwise I'm going to get
- 1:23:17hypothermia. Yeah.
- 1:23:18So I stayed with her as long as I could until, like, I literally
- 1:23:21couldn't feel my body anymore. And I was like, I'm you're
- 1:23:24somewhat close to the bottom. I got to rundown.
- 1:23:26I'll come back up and get you. Yeah.
- 1:23:27Oh my gosh. I mean that, yeah.
- 1:23:29I've never had a a big fall in the cold, like wet in a scary
- 1:23:33place, but when you feel that you're like I.
- 1:23:35I yeah, I had to go, yeah. It is, it is crazy.
- 1:23:41Yeah, I've had a I've had a few touchy times, obviously in the
- 1:23:43whites, but I'm I, I I'm definitely one to turn around.
- 1:23:47Oh yeah, And kind of cherry pick days.
- 1:23:49I feel like, I don't know, I feel like I'm a weak, I'm a I'm
- 1:23:52a weak hiker now. I just don't go out on gnarly
- 1:23:54days anymore. Definitely cherry pick my dad,
- 1:23:57yeah. Smart, soft.
- 1:23:58I don't know. I think you know both.
- 1:24:00Maybe. No.
- 1:24:01Yeah, no, I definitely don't risk it anymore.
- 1:24:05Not that I did, but I definitely pick and choose.
- 1:24:09Yeah, so it makes sense. But summer's here, so hopefully,
- 1:24:13I mean, once in a while in the summer you can get caught and
- 1:24:14stuff, but no more winter stuff. I I'm all my winter stuff is
- 1:24:18away and I'm just grabbing shoes and shorts and I'm.
- 1:24:22Going it's been short season since the time, yeah, the time
- 1:24:25change. The time change, yeah.
- 1:24:27It hasn't. I'll.
- 1:24:30Be. I think me and Connor made that
- 1:24:32rule. Yeah, we were out that day.
- 1:24:34But apparently the exception to the rule is you can still wear
- 1:24:36gloves in. Other winter I had.
- 1:24:39Gloves are the last thing to go. Gloves in a buff for me.
- 1:24:44Yeah, I even bring gloves in a buff sometimes when it's like
- 1:24:474550°, like in my car and I'm like, all right, I need to get
- 1:24:50over myself. Like it's yeah, it's it's not
- 1:24:52that cold anymore. Still.
- 1:24:56Well, cool. Dude, this is fun.
- 1:24:57This is awesome. Sweet.
- 1:24:58Did I miss anything big major like cool stories you can think
- 1:25:01of? I mean I must of.
- 1:25:03Not that I can think. Of nothing.
- 1:25:04Nothing off the top. No, I don't think Well, I mean,
- 1:25:07we certainly have cool stories, but.
- 1:25:08Yeah, it's, it's hard. I can't keep you guys here all
- 1:25:11day, can't keep here all day. But I'm sure you guys will be on
- 1:25:14again in the future, if you ever.
- 1:25:15Maybe, yeah, maybe on some big efforts.
- 1:25:17Who knows? Who knows?
- 1:25:18Yeah, it's cool. I was nervous.
- 1:25:21For this, the lower stakes, yeah, it is.
- 1:25:26I mean, it's a little bit nerd. It's just a little bit
- 1:25:28different. Like having a microphone and
- 1:25:30camera, like you just kind of feel a little bit weird.
- 1:25:31But yeah, yeah, it's, it's very, very low stakes.
- 1:25:34And I feel like everyone who listens is just like same, just
- 1:25:37like they like talking about hiking stuff, right?
- 1:25:39Definitely, yeah. But yeah, it's.
- 1:25:41Just like our, our, our conversation on the trails.
- 1:25:43Oh yes, I always say like this is just exactly like what we
- 1:25:46would be talking about on our on our run and you know, on the
- 1:25:49trails. So, yeah, all right.
- 1:25:52Well, cool. If you guys don't have anything
- 1:25:53else. Thanks for coming on.
- 1:25:54Got to give everyone a shout out.
- 1:25:55Who's racing now? Yeah, Connor trying to Yep,
- 1:25:58Connor this week, right now as we speak, yes, we abandoned
- 1:26:01Connor. I know, and we're doing a
- 1:26:03podcast. But I promise, Connor, we, we
- 1:26:05even though we could have, we couldn't have made it.
- 1:26:07Happen. I can't run yet.
- 1:26:11I was like, literally got a text, Lyle, like, hey, if you
- 1:26:14need a car spot, I can drop you off this morning, Yeah.
- 1:26:17But wait, what is Lyle doing? He's in Vermont.
- 1:26:19Oh, he's in Vermont. Is he racing to?
- 1:26:21Boston. I don't think so, no.
- 1:26:23Oh. OK, yeah, OK.
- 1:26:24Yeah, he was just sound of it. I felt bad, Connor and.
- 1:26:27I suggested Sarita, but Sarita was doing a race today too.
- 1:26:31Yeah. So yeah, I I feel yeah, Connor
- 1:26:34just put out that flair text like for a pacer, which is the
- 1:26:37worst feeling, like you never want to be that guy, but he was
- 1:26:40looking and we just fore knows it.
- 1:26:42I already, I already have the Jirga Johnson weekend crossed
- 1:26:45out. So like, yeah, we'll be there
- 1:26:47for him, so. Nice, nice.
- 1:26:50Cool. And yeah, I mean, we'll ally
- 1:26:53maybe in a couple weeks. We'll keep her eyes open, I
- 1:26:55guess. We talked about it.
- 1:26:56Hopefully it didn't force it out of your boat.
- 1:26:57No, no, it's fine. I feel like people know at this
- 1:27:00point. So good luck on that and yeah,
- 1:27:04we'll chat again soon and definitely get out at some
- 1:27:06point. Sweet.
- 1:27:07All right, cool. OK guys, we're going through
- 1:27:09race results. We just.
- 1:27:11Heard the second place finisher at the White Lakes.
- 1:27:13Six hours. We're going to do the rest of
- 1:27:15the White Lakes. If we didn't talk about it in
- 1:27:17the conversation already, then we're going to do Riverlands
- 1:27:20100, then the Big A 50K in York, ME and then we're doing Coca
- 1:27:25Dona talk. So we got some some good races,
- 1:27:29some good race results. To go through.
- 1:27:32So we'll start out with the White Lake Ultras, the first
- 1:27:36White Mountain endurance race of the year.
- 1:27:39I was there to volunteer, so I saw the IT was the daytime, so
- 1:27:43we saw the end of the 12 hours, the end of the six hours.
- 1:27:48We didn't see any crazy, a little bit of carnage, nothing
- 1:27:50crazy carnage. We didn't do the overnight, but
- 1:27:55got to help out a little bit there.
- 1:27:56People just so hungry making food the whole time, making
- 1:28:01food, making food. Volunteering is is it's actually
- 1:28:04kind of stressful at these ultras because people just be
- 1:28:08eating a ton. But the race results, the 24
- 1:28:12hour, we'll start off with the woman's race in the 24 hour, 3
- 1:28:18girls break slash tie, the course record.
- 1:28:23We talked about ultras just getting faster, course records
- 1:28:26going down. No one had ever got a buckle,
- 1:28:30100 mile buckle at White Lake Ultra's woman.
- 1:28:33I think the the previous record, it was either 92 or 94.
- 1:28:37Marilyn told me when I was over there, but Erica Bash goes 102
- 1:28:44miles, first place woman gets the first buckle and the course
- 1:28:50record on the on the at the White Lake.
- 1:28:53And then Erika Notini goes 100 miles.
- 1:28:56She also gets a buckle, a second buckle ever over the course
- 1:29:00record, the previous course record for 2nd place.
- 1:29:03And then Anna Miller goes 94 miles.
- 1:29:06She comes in third. Such a stacked race.
- 1:29:10Peter Benito will go to the men's.
- 1:29:11Peter Benito wins it. He goes 108 miles.
- 1:29:15Jason Kaplan also goes 108 miles, but comes in second.
- 1:29:20So they, I think, yeah, how they do it is whoever comes in first,
- 1:29:23if you do the same amount of laps, that's just they get first
- 1:29:28and then the second place person gets second.
- 1:29:31So that was 1-2 in the men's race.
- 1:29:33And then Andrew Moore comes in 3rd, 104 miles.
- 1:29:37And then shout out Kevin Ellis off the podium.
- 1:29:39But he also ran 104 miles, a bunch of White Lake buckles this
- 1:29:44year. The conditions were good.
- 1:29:46It was cold. It was like very cool, almost a
- 1:29:51little too cold for a 24 hour event, like overnight if you're
- 1:29:55not moving really fast. I'm sure those people had to
- 1:29:56bundle up, but it was cool. The course was mostly dry, a
- 1:30:01little bit wet, not as wet as previous years, so good
- 1:30:07conditions, a lot of crushers. That was the 24 hour.
- 1:30:10Now we'll do the 12 hour. First place men, Cole Hauser, 72
- 1:30:15miles, second place Justin Ellis, 68 miles and then Willie
- 1:30:20Andre, he came in fourth overall, 62 miles.
- 1:30:24The women's winner, Ashley Uland, third year at the White
- 1:30:28Lakes, shout out 64 miles. She takes first place Christine
- 1:30:34Western. Christine Western came comes in
- 1:30:37second, Sarah Bam Logan comes in 3rd and Clarice Reinhardt comes
- 1:30:43in fourth. They all went 52 miles.
- 1:30:47So that was a 12 hour race and then the six hour race, which we
- 1:30:51heard from Allie already, the six hour women's Taylor Miller
- 1:30:55and Allie Laville both go 36 miles.
- 1:30:58Taylor comes in first, Allie comes in second.
- 1:31:00I think on Ultra Ultra magazine, the results had it flip-flopped.
- 1:31:06So who know who who knows? No, I think Taylor came in
- 1:31:08first. There was actually, I think it
- 1:31:10or I don't know if this would have impacted the results, but
- 1:31:13there was a little bit of chip discrepancy that they had to
- 1:31:17sort out. But that's 1-2.
- 1:31:19In the women's race, Michaela MERS MERS Wheeler, she does 34
- 1:31:26miles, she comes in 3rd. And then the men's race, Tom
- 1:31:30Hanlin goes 44 miles in six hours.
- 1:31:33He comes in first, Ryan Murphy, 36 and 2nd and then Mike Lucy,
- 1:31:3836 and 3rd. So I was a White Lake Soldiers.
- 1:31:40It was fun. It's good to volunteer.
- 1:31:43I always go to White Lakes. I, I try to volunteer.
- 1:31:46Sometimes I just go to hang out for a little bit.
- 1:31:48I like volunteering or hanging out at lapped ultras because you
- 1:31:51get to see everybody. It's you know, you get to the
- 1:31:55spread is just awesome because they get to bring the camper or
- 1:31:58whatever. They bring all the stuff in
- 1:32:00right up to the patio or that they had everything at and you
- 1:32:06get to see everyone every two miles.
- 1:32:08Some ultras you're sitting and you maybe do a six hour shift
- 1:32:11volunteering. You see two runners.
- 1:32:13The hype is not not super high all times.
- 1:32:17I like going there. If you, if you haven't
- 1:32:18volunteered at races, it's a good experience.
- 1:32:20You should do it. But alright, Andrew, stop.
- 1:32:22This is the results section. Next up.
- 1:32:25This may be the craziest result from the weekend.
- 1:32:30The big A 50K in York, ME, Mount Agamonticus, something like
- 1:32:35that. My king always says we got to go
- 1:32:37to Big A if we want any vert. In southern Maine, the Big A 50K
- 1:32:41took place. We don't have the full results
- 1:32:43yet and I did some straw snooping and no one on the
- 1:32:46women's side was showing their places.
- 1:32:50Maybe I just couldn't find them. But the Big A 50K previous
- 1:32:54course record was held by Patrick Karen in 2017.
- 1:32:58He goes 448. Everyone knows Patrick if
- 1:33:01Patrick Karen is in the race, he has the course record.
- 1:33:04It's fast, blazing, but this year, Tyler Sheedy, he goes 21
- 1:33:10minutes under the course record. He goes 427.
- 1:33:14That's 33 miles, 6000 feet avert at an 8 O 6 pace.
- 1:33:21Oh my gosh, 657 gap. And, and he just, he just smokes
- 1:33:28it. I think there, I think in his
- 1:33:29write up, maybe there's one person close to him, but Oh my
- 1:33:32gosh, he just smoked it. So that was a crazy result.
- 1:33:36And he he is a new listener to the podcast.
- 1:33:39He was messing. We were messaging back and forth
- 1:33:41a little bit. He gave me his full rankings
- 1:33:44from the 48 four thousand footers list episode, which I
- 1:33:47thought was awesome. But it looks like he he's just a
- 1:33:51fast runner coming out of college.
- 1:33:53He's running with Lars Hogney and these guys are are ripping
- 1:33:58around on trails. And he also has done a ton of
- 1:34:014000 footers peak bagging. So yeah, super fast and and I
- 1:34:07think this is the sports just getting faster, but I'm pretty
- 1:34:10sure these guys are D1 runners, like 15 minute 5 cares at least
- 1:34:15a couple years ago I was doing a little bit of snooping.
- 1:34:19Hope hope you're OK with that, Tyler.
- 1:34:21He's a commenter in New Hampshire track and field, which
- 1:34:26is cool, but when you get this raw speed coming to the trails,
- 1:34:30who? That's how stuff goes fast.
- 1:34:33So we'll, we'll see, we'll see what he.
- 1:34:35Does in the future, but that was an awesome race for him.
- 1:34:38And we'll get the big A, the full big A results next week.
- 1:34:43OK. But then we'll do yeah.
- 1:34:45Now we're going to finish. We're going to finish off with
- 1:34:47the Riverlands, the Riverlands 100.
- 1:34:49I think this was the last year that the that they're doing the
- 1:34:52Riverlands 100 in Maine. Don't know the full story.
- 1:34:55Should have done more research. Busy this week.
- 1:34:57I've been busy. I'd be busy.
- 1:35:01Mike Conley wins it first place. He runs 21 hours, 0 minutes and
- 1:35:0510 seconds. If you know Mike, dude finishes
- 1:35:09hard and I'm sure he was trying to get under the 21 hour, but I
- 1:35:13mean same, same. He crushes it, takes home the
- 1:35:16win. 2nd place. Ben Nibbler.
- 1:35:20This guy's been active, He's been racing, he's been active.
- 1:35:23He comes in 2nd, 22 hours, 35 minutes.
- 1:35:26And then Joshua Robison, he comes in 2536 to round off the
- 1:35:31top three. And then the female race, the
- 1:35:36woman's race. I just bad with words.
- 1:35:39Guys in cows, the woman's race at Riverlands 100.
- 1:35:47Jessica Krandark. I mean, I just couldn't even put
- 1:35:51real words, letters on here. Jessica Krandak goes 2657.
- 1:35:58Shout out, she wins it. Eliza Broughton goes 2849 and
- 1:36:03then Jessica Hayne Hanks Hawks. Jessica Hawks goes 29242925.
- 1:36:11That's brutal. I mean, the handwriting I'm I'm
- 1:36:13going to get a printer and this is going to get better.
- 1:36:15But those are all the local races.
- 1:36:17The Riverlands 100 was actually one of the 1st 100 milers that I
- 1:36:20wanted to do, but they, I, I couldn't get into it for
- 1:36:24whatever reason. So it's a cool race up in Maine.
- 1:36:27I actually got invited to the Riverlands relay, but I just
- 1:36:31couldn't make it work. So it's a cool race.
- 1:36:35Those are the race results. And the last thing I wanted to
- 1:36:38talk about today is Cocodonna. Holy smokes, Rachel Entrekin.
- 1:36:47Oh my gosh. I mean, everyone's talking about
- 1:36:49lit lights of World on Fire. We probably maybe talked about
- 1:36:53on this podcast, probably one of the most impressive ultra
- 1:36:57marathon performances ever, definitely from a woman could be
- 1:37:01the top women ultra of all time over court, over Courtney
- 1:37:06Dewalter's western states, over Courtney's Moab, just so crazy,
- 1:37:12absolutely insane. And and I had a couple thoughts.
- 1:37:17I mean, every, every race is getting faster.
- 1:37:19People are going harder. You need to just go crazy in
- 1:37:23these races. Rachel even said like 50 miles
- 1:37:26in, she's like, I'm going out so hot, but why not me?
- 1:37:30And so if you want to set a course record, you want to win
- 1:37:32some of these big races, you have to just go for it and eat a
- 1:37:36lot and go hard. So that performance is awesome.
- 1:37:41I mean, I was watching the live stream.
- 1:37:43I was watching more of the leaderboard honestly.
- 1:37:46So I didn't catch as much of the live stream.
- 1:37:48I just like to see where everyone was at.
- 1:37:50But when when she comes across the finish line, goosebumps,
- 1:37:53goosebumps. If that doesn't get you fired up
- 1:37:56for your next ultra, I don't know what will.
- 1:37:58Don't know what will, but the one thing I want to talk about
- 1:38:02Cocodona, there's a there's a little bit of a controversy,
- 1:38:06controversial Cocodonas stuff that came across my feed.
- 1:38:12It was a friend, Francesco Poopy.
- 1:38:15He's a fast runner. I think he won CCC this year.
- 1:38:19He he made a post in his. Story that got a lot of backlash
- 1:38:21that was like Ross Grant commented on his Instagram.
- 1:38:26It was like dude you still have time to delete this like.
- 1:38:30Because he posted on the story and then he addressed it in the
- 1:38:33on the post. And so anyway, he posted
- 1:38:37something like I don't really love Cocodona.
- 1:38:39I don't like the 200 mile races. Why why are we racing super
- 1:38:42long? Like don't like it.
- 1:38:43Where's the limit? And a ton of people backlash.
- 1:38:46That's that is fighting words. So I want to dissect.
- 1:38:49It a little. Bit give my thoughts if we had
- 1:38:51in the podcast already, I think, I think he he tried to you know,
- 1:38:59he he gave a full explanation. Go read it.
- 1:39:01I'm sure I butchered it. Maybe I made made it a little
- 1:39:03bit took took words out of his mouth.
- 1:39:05So to go read him. I don't know exactly what he
- 1:39:06said. I shouldn't say I shouldn't just
- 1:39:09I should have the quote, but he was basically he laid out this
- 1:39:13thing where, you know, the trail running scene can get making
- 1:39:20some some efforts and some racing.
- 1:39:22Some things can blow, blow up to the average person essentially.
- 1:39:27And you know, he was saying I don't know why we have to keep
- 1:39:30pushing the limits. Like 100 mile races was one
- 1:39:33thing, but then it's like 200 Nexus, you know, all these 200
- 1:39:37Moab Tahoe, there's one in Maine coming.
- 1:39:41What's next? We got to do 300 the air Arizona
- 1:39:44300 and we doing 405 hundred. Where does it stop?
- 1:39:47Right. And so it's.
- 1:39:49I, I I. See, you know, he's saying like,
- 1:39:51you know, we're just pushing our bodies.
- 1:39:53I don't I don't like just these crazy races, which that is one
- 1:39:57thing and I wanted dice. And then the other thing he said
- 1:40:01was when you see these kind of races come up and efforts come
- 1:40:06up, it it kind of, he says something like contrues or like
- 1:40:12misconstrues the true what trail running actually is because.
- 1:40:17A lot of the media Barkley marathons is a crazy good
- 1:40:21example. I have gotten more comments from
- 1:40:25my non running friends about the Barkley marathon and about
- 1:40:29people running across the state than any other race.
- 1:40:35And a lot of people who are who are in the trail running and and
- 1:40:39like the times and they and they like the competitive aspect.
- 1:40:43Barclays, like I know a lot of people like it, but Barclays
- 1:40:46kind of just like in a sense a made-up race from some guy like
- 1:40:51just do, you know, run through these prior bushes and grab this
- 1:40:54note and you can't use Agps or navigation.
- 1:40:58It's kind of like that doesn't represent, you know, somebody
- 1:41:04like a Jim Wamsi on the trail, Courtney DeWalt, Rachel Ectoran
- 1:41:09Ectoran doing these amazing like feats of, of fitness on on the
- 1:41:16trails, right, like shorter distance fitness, like pure
- 1:41:20genetic freak crazy that they're doing these, these efforts and
- 1:41:28it it kind of can over shadow some some more pure athletic
- 1:41:32performances as opposed to just grit or kind of like awe
- 1:41:37awestruck performances. So that was what he was kind of
- 1:41:40saying. I probably butchered it, but
- 1:41:41that was like the gist of it. And and we'll do devil's
- 1:41:46advocate or I guess I'll I'll what is it called?
- 1:41:49I'll, I'll, I'll see his side first.
- 1:41:53It it is. You know, some of the some of
- 1:41:58the, I think it's funny, he probably to make a living to be
- 1:42:03sponsored, he probably has to race against Jim Walmsley's,
- 1:42:09Killian Jornes, David Sinclair. He has to race against these
- 1:42:13guys out, kick them, work harder than them, try to be fitter than
- 1:42:17them in these crazy races. And if he finishes 4th at CCC or
- 1:42:22whatever, he probably gets a little bit of attention.
- 1:42:24But the kick, you know, it doesn't really get a bunch of
- 1:42:27eyes or a bunch of buzz, even though it's it's insane.
- 1:42:31But then he looks at somebody who in essence a Barkley
- 1:42:35marathon, you know, finisher, not that that's the same thing,
- 1:42:38but somebody like I somebody sets an F for FKT, for growing
- 1:42:43across the state. They get so much more hype
- 1:42:47behind it in the pull from the general public because the
- 1:42:50general public can't wrap their head around it.
- 1:42:53And so you could just he would be better off going to Montana
- 1:42:58and running across the state of Montana, potentially at a, at a
- 1:43:0215, you know, at a super slow pace, not very impressive
- 1:43:06athletic, pure speed wise and get more buzz.
- 1:43:12And I think it's probably frustrating for him, right.
- 1:43:15The I, I feel like if I were to shortcut my like ultra, you
- 1:43:21know, if I'm, if I'm trying to get sponsors one day or I'm
- 1:43:23trying to really blow up this podcast, I think the best thing
- 1:43:27for me to do is just like run across each state of New England
- 1:43:31and just blow up social media with clips on bunch of different
- 1:43:35platforms. And I think that would get me so
- 1:43:38much more buzz than me spending potentially the next 5 to
- 1:43:42whatever years trying to top ten at UTMB that no, nobody in the
- 1:43:48US will probably ever talk about.
- 1:43:49You know what I mean? Like if I have a big goal like
- 1:43:52that or chasing some of these White Mountains times that I
- 1:43:56could just spend years trying to go to go for, you know, to get a
- 1:44:00Prezi traverse, right when I could just slowly walk across,
- 1:44:05you know, jog across Maine and just get way more buzz.
- 1:44:11It's because nowadays on social media, what comes on my feet
- 1:44:16this morning, a guy cuts a jug of milk with a saw and milk just
- 1:44:22goes all over his kitchen and then he's like, oh wait, no, you
- 1:44:25should just try opening by the cap. 10 million views.
- 1:44:28Another guy throws an egg on a burning stove and then puts a
- 1:44:33pan on and puts oil on the egg and then puts a pan on top of
- 1:44:37the the egg yolk all over the stove and then salts the pan and
- 1:44:40goes oh wait, I swapped the egg in the pan. 10 million views.
- 1:44:46Like these kind of things are what grabs attention, right?
- 1:44:51And so when you have somebody fighting in a trail running
- 1:44:55sport that doesn't have a ton of money compared to, you know, big
- 1:44:59mainstream team sports and you're going against these freak
- 1:45:04athletes, you know, for every second, every second can cost
- 1:45:07you thousands of dollars. He's probably frustrated.
- 1:45:10So I see that side. So I kind of get what he's
- 1:45:14saying there, but I think where he's coming from and where where
- 1:45:18even sometimes me maybe where I'm coming from, where I say
- 1:45:21some of that state stuff is the reason everyone loves trail
- 1:45:25running and I love trail running is it's not just a pure fitness
- 1:45:29numbers game. I think that's boring.
- 1:45:32That's like Rd. marathoning. It's cool to see these guys go
- 1:45:34sub two, but I really love the fact that there's long stuff,
- 1:45:40there's multi day stuff, technical steep, not steep, not
- 1:45:44technical fast stuff that's almost roadie and then list
- 1:45:48projects, gridding projects, fastest known time for all the
- 1:45:52stuff, the range AT there's so much range and you can succeed
- 1:45:57in so many different areas right, and I think that's
- 1:46:01awesome. I think it's cool and I think he
- 1:46:04is just probably a person that doesn't want to, you know, dip
- 1:46:09into that mental, you know, low of A200300400 mile race
- 1:46:15warranted. I don't know.
- 1:46:17All right now I don't want to do that right.
- 1:46:19I want to try to get as fit as possible, but it's just not in
- 1:46:24his wheelhouse. So him saying that that's not
- 1:46:26part of trail running. It's just I think it's lame and
- 1:46:30I think a lot of people think it's lame and I think he's got
- 1:46:33AI don't know what he said, you know, he's he's going to come
- 1:46:36around on it. But the sport of trail running
- 1:46:38encompasses all of that and I think that is awesome.
- 1:46:41And yeah, I mean the, the, the you know, whatever is going to
- 1:46:47get attention is going to get attention.
- 1:46:49Some that I talked about this in the content creation versus
- 1:46:51athlete. Everyone's just trying to get
- 1:46:54attention. And if it really drives you up a
- 1:46:58wall that somebody doing this kind of a silly or a different
- 1:47:01project gets way more attention than then some of your stuff.
- 1:47:05That's just is what it is. Try to find a way to be
- 1:47:08undeniable. This is what I kind of maybe I
- 1:47:12strive for a little bit in terms of, you know, some of my running
- 1:47:16stuff. If if, if you want, if you want
- 1:47:20to go do something great, if you want credit for doing something
- 1:47:22great or you think you're a great runner and you want to
- 1:47:24prove it or you have potential, you want to prove it.
- 1:47:27Become undeniable. Make it so that people cannot
- 1:47:33deny your accomplishments. Go do that and I'm sure people.
- 1:47:36Will talk about you. So it's kind of that thing where
- 1:47:39it's like, bro, if you go to Western States, UTMB, all these,
- 1:47:44all these races and just sweep for 2-3 years, you're going to
- 1:47:48get as much attention as you want.
- 1:47:51You just got to go do it. So that was some talk.
- 1:47:54I don't know, We'll, we'll see. Let me know what you guys think.
- 1:47:56About all that stuff. But but that was the Kuka Donna
- 1:47:59talk and that was that was this episode.
- 1:48:02So another episode in the books. I hope my camera still long
- 1:48:05because I have low battery. This was a cool one.
- 1:48:09More guests, guys, more guests. I'm I'm I'm more guests, more
- 1:48:13race previews. I'm trying to refine, refine,
- 1:48:18refine. We're not there yet.
- 1:48:19We're at a rough I'm rough draft in these things, but we're
- 1:48:22coming along. Appreciate you guys listening.
- 1:48:26Hopefully enjoy the episode and we'll see you next week.
- 1:48:28The trail scene is Byron off this year. 2026 is going to be
- 1:48:31huge. We'll see you next week.
- 1:48:34Peace.
