- 2:35Speaker 1: out when I was reading the Houston Chronicle, and the
- 2:37Speaker 1: founder and chairman of the board of Cool Baker Global
- 2:40Speaker 1: along my man Robert cool Bell, who's the founder and
- 2:43Speaker 1: president of Cool Baker Global. Please welcome to Money Making
- 2:46Speaker 1: Conversation the current manager of the Houston Nastros and wine
- 2:50Speaker 1: entrepreneur Dusty Baker. Good morning, how you doing, Hey, Dustin.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Had to get it all out, man, I had to
- 2:56Speaker 1: get it all out about you, man. Yeah. Well, you know,
- 3:01Speaker 1: Lett's talk about you as a person, because I gotta
- 3:03Speaker 1: say some things about the very personal to meet because
- 3:07Speaker 1: when you're in the business, they's only two African American
- 3:09Speaker 1: managers that are currently and Major League baseballer. That's Dave
- 3:12Speaker 1: Roberts or the Dodgers and yourself. And you know, when
- 3:16Speaker 1: you grow up in the community and you look, you
- 3:18Speaker 1: are a icon, You are a a leader. You are
- 3:22Speaker 1: a person that consider blessing in my life because you're
- 3:26Speaker 1: doing some things that are unique in this business and
- 3:28Speaker 1: you've achieved high levels of success in a business that
- 3:31Speaker 1: very few of us have achieved an opportunity to participate.
- 3:35Speaker 1: And that nothing negative. It's just why life placed itself out.
- 3:38Speaker 1: And with that being said, when I when I make
- 3:40Speaker 1: statements like that, and and and I'm an African American man,
- 3:44Speaker 1: a person of color, how do you react to that?
- 3:46Speaker 1: Do you? Do you feel the the what you've accomplished
- 3:50Speaker 1: in your life and the impact that you made to
- 3:52Speaker 1: individuals like me and people you make in the in
- 3:55Speaker 1: the game of baseball, game that you just started playing
- 3:58Speaker 1: because you love that made a live or not of it. Well,
- 4:01Speaker 1: you know, people tell me about it, but I don't
- 4:03Speaker 1: really think about it. You know. I just think about
- 4:05Speaker 1: living my life and trying to do the best I
- 4:08Speaker 1: can for the community and my family. And you know,
- 4:11Speaker 1: my dad was, you know, my little league coach. He
- 4:14Speaker 1: was very Bobby Bonds litt league coach in Riverside, California.
- 4:17Speaker 1: My dad was, you know, deacon in the in the church.
- 4:21Speaker 1: My mama was in the in the choir. So like
- 4:23Speaker 1: we were, you know, raised, you know, to be community
- 4:28Speaker 1: minded and I'm the oldest of five. My dad worked
- 4:32Speaker 1: h two jobs for thirty five years and uh, you know,
- 4:35Speaker 1: my mom went back to school at forty years old
- 4:38Speaker 1: and uh, you know, got her degrees and uh. But
- 4:41Speaker 1: my dad was a common sense, hard working guy who
- 4:44Speaker 1: who was an entrepreneur himself. But it didn't really you know,
- 4:49Speaker 1: nobody used those turns back in the day. My dad
- 4:52Speaker 1: had you know, my dad had rent house picked him
- 4:55Speaker 1: up and then you know, like he was, you know,
- 4:58Speaker 1: he'd do anything. Say we was just a hustler. He
- 5:01Speaker 1: was a hustler. Oh yeah, I mean my dad attacked ruth.
- 5:04Speaker 1: I was with him all the time. My dad, you know,
- 5:06Speaker 1: he did gardening. My dad did uh you know, whatever
- 5:09Speaker 1: it took to you know, to make some extra change. Uh.
- 5:12Speaker 1: And you know how I got into farming. You know,
- 5:15Speaker 1: most most of us are farmers in the past that
- 5:18Speaker 1: we've forgotten about farm We were forced to farm back
- 5:21Speaker 1: in the day. So you know, my dad, uh, you know,
- 5:25Speaker 1: we always had a garden. I got a garden now
- 5:28Speaker 1: because you feed your family, you know, out of the garden.
- 5:30Speaker 1: And so uh, you know, my my roots started long
- 5:34Speaker 1: time ago. I didn't like it. I didn't like doing
- 5:36Speaker 1: all that hard work out there in that hot sun,
- 5:39Speaker 1: but it paid off because I'm passing that on now
- 5:42Speaker 1: to you know, my daughter and son, the way that
- 5:44Speaker 1: my dad passed it on to me. You know, it's
- 5:47Speaker 1: really interesting that so many terms that we use nowadays
- 5:50Speaker 1: branding entrepreneurs. You know, when I was growing up in
- 5:54Speaker 1: the sixties and seventies, and you know, those terms wasn't
- 5:57Speaker 1: shared in our community like that. You know, we're just
- 6:00Speaker 1: trying to work, you know, whether entrepreneurs somebody who was
- 6:02Speaker 1: cutting grass every week or entrepreneur. You know, these are
- 6:05Speaker 1: entrepreneurs duties that we were doing, but we didn't know
- 6:08Speaker 1: what the title was. Who was just like there trying
- 6:10Speaker 1: to make money to put food on the table. Now
- 6:12Speaker 1: we realized when I, when I listened to you, the
- 6:15Speaker 1: structure of who you are today besides a baseball player,
- 6:18Speaker 1: was given to you by your father and your mom.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Your father being an entrepreneur, and you saw how he
- 6:22Speaker 1: was able to make money outside of the forty hour
- 6:25Speaker 1: week schedule. That was really important. Correct, well, I was
- 6:29Speaker 1: very I was very correct. But see also another part
- 6:32Speaker 1: here that came into play. I signed out of high
- 6:36Speaker 1: school against my dad's permission. I had a number of
- 6:38Speaker 1: football and basketball none in baseball, and I was drafted
- 6:42Speaker 1: by the Atlanta Braids, which I prayed that that that
- 6:45Speaker 1: I didn't go, I wouldn't go to the South. This
- 6:47Speaker 1: was in sixty seven seven time tough time all over
- 6:54Speaker 1: the country, especially in the South and May being from California,
- 6:57Speaker 1: I prayed, Lord, please don't let me get drafted by
- 6:59Speaker 1: the Atlanta Praise. But that was the best thing, you know,
- 7:02Speaker 1: that happened to me, because that's when I met Ralph Guard.
- 7:05Speaker 1: We were in the same draft. And that's when when
- 7:07Speaker 1: Hank Karen promised my mother that that if I signed
- 7:11Speaker 1: out of high school, he would take care of me
- 7:13Speaker 1: as if I was his own the home son. So
- 7:16Speaker 1: I came back home after that summer playing baseball. A
- 7:18Speaker 1: couple of weeks play baseball, and my dad took my
- 7:22Speaker 1: contract to court. He was trying to nullify my contract
- 7:24Speaker 1: because he wanted me to go to college and play basketball,
- 7:28Speaker 1: and so the state of California they couldn't nullify it.
- 7:31Speaker 1: So the State of California was a trustee over my
- 7:34Speaker 1: affairs and my bonus money till I was twenty one
- 7:37Speaker 1: years old, and my dad and I didn't. I mean,
- 7:39Speaker 1: he was my main man. We didn't speak three years,
- 7:42Speaker 1: you know that. You know that I'm eighteen, now I'm growing.
- 7:46Speaker 1: I can do what I want. See. What happened was
- 7:48Speaker 1: my dad, uh in California, put my money into IBM
- 7:52Speaker 1: stock and to understand California. And that was and and
- 7:58Speaker 1: now there's Chevron. So now when I got to be
- 8:01Speaker 1: twenty one years old, you know, between eighteen twenty one,
- 8:05Speaker 1: here I was watching my little my little money in
- 8:08Speaker 1: the stock market and it tripled and I was like,
- 8:11Speaker 1: that's when I first started, uh, you know, watching the
- 8:14Speaker 1: stock market you know through no no, uh you know,
- 8:19Speaker 1: wasn't either did it? And later on in life I
- 8:22Speaker 1: end up being a stockbroker for a year at eighty seven,
- 8:25Speaker 1: and my brother went to school he was certified, and
- 8:29Speaker 1: the CFP and insurance and the stocks and all kinds
- 8:33Speaker 1: of stuff. So you never know, you know which way
- 8:36Speaker 1: the Lord is gonna take you, uh, and it took
- 8:39Speaker 1: me in a way where, like I said, I was
- 8:41Speaker 1: upset with my dad, and you know, I wanted to
- 8:45Speaker 1: do my own thing. But as it turned out, you know,
- 8:48Speaker 1: these things helped me, you know, later on in life,
- 8:52Speaker 1: you know, That's that's why it's important for me to
- 8:53Speaker 1: bring you on the show because these the stories that
- 8:56Speaker 1: you know, you don't you know. Success is interesting because
- 8:59Speaker 1: of the fact that when you bring up Hankcaring and Hankcaring,
- 9:01Speaker 1: if anybody doesn't know, they know he's the all time
- 9:03Speaker 1: home run leader and all that stuff broke the record
- 9:05Speaker 1: of Beyreut. But he's an amazing entrepreneur. This man right here,
- 9:11Speaker 1: it's got so much going on in the city of
- 9:13Speaker 1: Atlanta and surrounding areas as an entrepreneur, that's where he's
- 9:16Speaker 1: making all this money. That's where he's winning. He motivates me.
- 9:19Speaker 1: I mean, he's always motivated me on the field and
- 9:22Speaker 1: off the field. And you know, I remember when Hank,
- 9:25Speaker 1: you know, I had you know, I had handcar and
- 9:27Speaker 1: BMW and it's like that's where he met Mr Moorehead
- 9:30Speaker 1: Tom and Tom Moorehead who who who? Both of them
- 9:36Speaker 1: are are my partners. And this is some money in
- 9:38Speaker 1: Baker family wines about a year a year, year and
- 9:41Speaker 1: a half ago, and so this is how things come
- 9:44Speaker 1: full circle. And you know Handcart, Krispie Kreme, Hank Cat
- 9:48Speaker 1: number I don't know, he has a number of Popeyes
- 9:53Speaker 1: and he and he donates a whole bunch, you know,
- 9:57Speaker 1: back to the community, you know, which is which is
- 10:00Speaker 1: how I was raised. I was taught how I'm raising
- 10:03Speaker 1: my kids that you know, Lord says, you know, like
- 10:06Speaker 1: those that water get water, and you know, uh, you know,
- 10:11Speaker 1: I have generous friends and so like I'm afraid not
- 10:14Speaker 1: to give now, you know, because of of of how
- 10:18Speaker 1: blessed I've been in in my life I'm in hadn't
- 10:21Speaker 1: always been easy. I mean there were times when I
- 10:24Speaker 1: was almost broke, but always delivered me and uh, you know,
- 10:28Speaker 1: some kind of way, something always came through to you know,
- 10:31Speaker 1: put me back on top, which is indicative of my
- 10:34Speaker 1: career and my business. At the same time, let's talk
- 10:36Speaker 1: about so you live in the life of multiple streams
- 10:39Speaker 1: of income, which I always talked about the money making conversations,
- 10:42Speaker 1: and let's talk about the Baker family wines. Because I
- 10:45Speaker 1: was reading, like I said, I've lived in Atlanta. I'm
- 10:46Speaker 1: a home grown I'm born and raised in Atlanta in Houston, Texas,
- 10:49Speaker 1: by the way, born in fifth Ward grew up in
- 10:52Speaker 1: with the Forest Brook graduate from University Houston, got a
- 10:55Speaker 1: dree in mathematics with the IBM pursue the career as
- 10:58Speaker 1: a stand up comic and this history. Now I'm on
- 11:01Speaker 1: the phone talking to you on my platform, money making
- 11:03Speaker 1: conversation to Steve Harveys of the worlds Smith of the World,
- 11:05Speaker 1: of Jamie Fox of the world, Monique, all these people. Man,
- 11:10Speaker 1: you got a resume, all these people. You know the
- 11:13Speaker 1: thing that Now let's talk about the family wines. My
- 11:18Speaker 1: wife loves wines. Okay. I started out, you know, like
- 11:22Speaker 1: I bought a piece of property years ago in Sacramento.
- 11:25Speaker 1: It's like booting from San Francisco to Sacramento. So I
- 11:28Speaker 1: had I was on the UH Robert Mundavi advisory board,
- 11:33Speaker 1: and I go to UH dinners and lunches with their
- 11:37Speaker 1: with their distributors canadaate with Southern wine and spirits and stuff.
- 11:40Speaker 1: And so I had a couple of extra acres that
- 11:43Speaker 1: I was gonna build a pond on and UH told
- 11:46Speaker 1: me I would flood my neighbors because it was on
- 11:49Speaker 1: like a slope. And so for what else to do
- 11:52Speaker 1: with it? So I called UH, you know, Robert Mandavi
- 11:55Speaker 1: and and and I and I said, hey, man, do
- 11:57Speaker 1: you know anybody that you can help me? Um, you know,
- 12:01Speaker 1: plant my rootstock and my steaks and my my wires
- 12:04Speaker 1: and all this and he goes, yeah, he said, I
- 12:06Speaker 1: got a guy, Chick Brennaman. And so, uh, fourteen years
- 12:10Speaker 1: ago we planted a little gentlemen farm here that produces
- 12:15Speaker 1: about six eighty cases. And uh, and every time I
- 12:20Speaker 1: lose a job, that's when I start up a business.
- 12:24Speaker 1: These these things come to me. And that's how I
- 12:28Speaker 1: and then I was giving it away to some of
- 12:30Speaker 1: the brothers here in Sacramento and they're like, man, this
- 12:32Speaker 1: is good. So so that's how we got started. And
- 12:39Speaker 1: see my guy, you know, Chick brennam and my my
- 12:42Speaker 1: winemaker you know, was ahead and research at the at
- 12:46Speaker 1: the winery. You see Davis, he just retired and you
- 12:49Speaker 1: see David's winning Premier viticulture and and on college institutions
- 12:53Speaker 1: and the institutions in the world. And so how we
- 12:57Speaker 1: got started. Uh, and then we grew from de Serra
- 13:01Speaker 1: and my property and then we by Gradesause we have
- 13:05Speaker 1: some of young blanc. We have a property proper white
- 13:08Speaker 1: that's a commentation stimion and and and and and uh
- 13:14Speaker 1: stay on blanc. We got a penot that's coming. We
- 13:17Speaker 1: got Aberano coming. We have the Hank Aaron Cabernet that
- 13:22Speaker 1: is supposed to be come in August or and then
- 13:26Speaker 1: I got my my my grace from my sa grace,
- 13:29Speaker 1: from my property. We got Russian river bra a Russian
- 13:33Speaker 1: then and a proper head. That's uh that that that
- 13:36Speaker 1: that I like a lot. That's a combination of Barbara
- 13:39Speaker 1: Santel Vasi and Petize the ros. So you know, we
- 13:42Speaker 1: gotta you know, we're a small bootique binary. You gotta
- 13:46Speaker 1: going on, not Dusty, don't, don't, don't don't. We got
- 13:48Speaker 1: about thousand cases. People like it. Yeah, yeah, you have
- 13:52Speaker 1: people like it. Well, well just tell you this by
- 13:54Speaker 1: my wife. She's all and she's like, said, wine connoisseate.
- 13:57Speaker 1: I did a big mistake one time, Dusty. She has
- 14:00Speaker 1: a boot. She has this little boot you can just
- 14:01Speaker 1: like a big wire boot. And she would and I
- 14:04Speaker 1: didn't know it should be like a little corks in
- 14:06Speaker 1: now and that, and over the years she always had it,
- 14:09Speaker 1: and I aloud, oh, just tell the sad story. He's
- 14:13Speaker 1: gonna go sad, not just about to go say I didn't.
- 14:15Speaker 1: I don't drink wine, but she loves good wine. And
- 14:19Speaker 1: one day, man, I just came home with just through
- 14:22Speaker 1: that whole all just through all the corks away you
- 14:25Speaker 1: did she speak was like, I didn't don't Dusty, I
- 14:34Speaker 1: didn't know. I was stupid. Son was stupid. Man. She
- 14:37Speaker 1: didn't speak to me for a long time. Brother. She
- 14:40Speaker 1: that I didn't know that one thing a man, this
- 14:43Speaker 1: growing wine. I mean, it's a lot of work. I
- 14:46Speaker 1: mean it's a lot of work. I'm out there almost daily,
- 14:48Speaker 1: but it's it's a it's a very spiritual and it's
- 14:51Speaker 1: very relaxing, you know. And now I see why my
- 14:54Speaker 1: dad was always out in the garden because you know,
- 14:57Speaker 1: he'd come home work from work and go to the garden.
- 15:00Speaker 1: So that's what I know. So I said, that's what
- 15:03Speaker 1: I do every day. My wife greatly some water out
- 15:05Speaker 1: and that my son, uh, you know, works with me
- 15:08Speaker 1: out there. So I'm trying to teach him. And Baker
- 15:13Speaker 1: is we got we got some more businesses we got
- 15:15Speaker 1: to talk about. We don't want to think you just
- 15:17Speaker 1: one to mention, we're gonna be back to more Dusty Baker.
- 15:20Speaker 1: I'll tell you something. The legendary, legendary Dusty Bakers on
- 15:24Speaker 1: my show Money Making Conversation, not only to talk about
- 15:26Speaker 1: his impact on what on African Americans and what the
- 15:30Speaker 1: success he's had as a baseball player, but as the
- 15:32Speaker 1: growth he's generated as a as an entrepreneur, and it's
- 15:36Speaker 1: always a backstory to that. We'll be back with more
- 15:38Speaker 1: money making conversation to talk about other enterprises and also
- 15:41Speaker 1: talk about this wine. It's finally here, the season of celebration,

- 17:39Speaker 1: Ai Hi does rushan mcdonald'd listening to money making conversations,
- 17:43Speaker 1: I am talking to the four fourteen winning as manager
- 17:47Speaker 1: and major League baseball history. He started his baseball career
- 17:50Speaker 1: in eighteen sixty seven. He talked about that in the
- 17:52Speaker 1: first Break. He's one of only two black managers in
- 17:55Speaker 1: baseball today. But more importantly, his legacy is not just
- 17:58Speaker 1: tied to baseball. It's to being an entrepreneur. It's been
- 18:02Speaker 1: it's tied to understanding, uh, multiple screams of income, which
- 18:05Speaker 1: I talked about a lot on Money Making conversation. We
- 18:08Speaker 1: talked about the black the Baker family wines that he started,
- 18:12Speaker 1: and Uh. One thing I've noticed in my conversation is
- 18:15Speaker 1: that when you see an opportunity duster, you examine it
- 18:18Speaker 1: and you try to see it through. You just don't
- 18:21Speaker 1: just so shy away from something just because that's not
- 18:23Speaker 1: your skill set. Is that that's that's that's that's a
- 18:25Speaker 1: quality in you correct well, you know, because I was
- 18:29Speaker 1: always uh, you know, I was told by my parents
- 18:32Speaker 1: that don't be afraidly unknown. You gotta have faith in yourself.
- 18:35Speaker 1: You gotta have faith in the Lord, and you gotta
- 18:38Speaker 1: surround yourself with people that know more about uh, that
- 18:42Speaker 1: that particular situation you know than you do. So you know,
- 18:45Speaker 1: like I I've surrounded myself with people because like I've
- 18:49Speaker 1: been in and out of baseball the last few years.
- 18:51Speaker 1: I get a job, we win the division, and then
- 18:55Speaker 1: you know, like you know, they get rid of me
- 18:57Speaker 1: for whatever reason that I come home. I'm not just
- 19:00Speaker 1: gonna wait on them too, you know, you know, to
- 19:03Speaker 1: give me a job, I'm gonna go out and get
- 19:05Speaker 1: it like I was. And uh and and you know
- 19:10Speaker 1: I got Baker family wines. But see my other uh interests.
- 19:14Speaker 1: And when I built my home at that same time,
- 19:17Speaker 1: I put solar throughout my whole on my property. I
- 19:21Speaker 1: got ground mounds, I got roof mounths, I got instant
- 19:24Speaker 1: hot water, I got thermal. I got a well that
- 19:28Speaker 1: you know that's ah, that's uh you know, powered by
- 19:30Speaker 1: a um uh you know, by solar. I gotta. I
- 19:35Speaker 1: got a pool that was heated by solar. So I
- 19:37Speaker 1: was trying to leave a you know, a better carbon
- 19:40Speaker 1: footprint from my you know, my family and my kids
- 19:43Speaker 1: that are coming because did a hunter and a fisherman. Uh.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Since I was a kid with my dad. You know,
- 19:48Speaker 1: I've just noticed how how the fisheries are are are
- 19:52Speaker 1: going bad. They're talking about there's no global warming. I
- 19:55Speaker 1: went to Alaska last August and I saw all these glaciers.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Melton looks like is I went their last mate. It
- 20:01Speaker 1: was sad. It was sad, man, it was sad as heck.
- 20:03Speaker 1: I mean, but beautiful but but' but sad. So, you know,
- 20:07Speaker 1: bysically tell you where it used to be. When they say,
- 20:10Speaker 1: well it used to be right here. Oh yeah, then
- 20:13Speaker 1: they tell you there's no global warming, and I'm like,
- 20:15Speaker 1: wait a minute, I've seen global warming. You know, I'm
- 20:17Speaker 1: seven years old. I go to the rivers where I
- 20:19Speaker 1: grew up fishing and stuff, and there's barely any fishing there.
- 20:22Speaker 1: You know. I go duck hunting, there's very you know,
- 20:25Speaker 1: rarely any ducks or or it's hot out here in
- 20:27Speaker 1: California till until almost January is supposed to be raining. No.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Uh you know. That's that's that's why I got so
- 20:35Speaker 1: interested in and solar, uh, you know, to try to
- 20:39Speaker 1: leave a better world and also not to pay these high,
- 20:43Speaker 1: high energy costs. Let's just talk about solar because it's
- 20:47Speaker 1: been around forever, you know, and now when I'm listening
- 20:50Speaker 1: to you, it seems like it's an effective form of
- 20:55Speaker 1: you know, paying the bills around the house by using
- 20:57Speaker 1: nature's energy, nature's resources. So well, well, well it is.
- 21:01Speaker 1: And you know, I went to a clinic, not a clinic,
- 21:05Speaker 1: I went to uh the Roth conference, and I met
- 21:08Speaker 1: this guy in Chicago, uh you know, a few years
- 21:12Speaker 1: ago named Ted Roth, and he goes, why don't you
- 21:14Speaker 1: come down to our conference about solar and alternative energy.
- 21:18Speaker 1: So I went down there and I noticed that there
- 21:21Speaker 1: were very few women of power there, and they were
- 21:25Speaker 1: a handful of minorities out of uh well you know,
- 21:28Speaker 1: African Americans out of probably ten thousand people. And so
- 21:32Speaker 1: I'm like, man, were getting left behind in in in
- 21:36Speaker 1: the in the uh you know, in the energy business,
- 21:39Speaker 1: and we're also being left behind, you know, in the
- 21:42Speaker 1: in the tech world. So um, you know, I I
- 21:46Speaker 1: was trying to trying to take some people with me, um,
- 21:50Speaker 1: you know, to you know, continue this uh you know
- 21:53Speaker 1: thing that we started. And it's very interesting. I mean,
- 21:56Speaker 1: I love it. I'm not an expert at any you
- 21:59Speaker 1: know my any means, but I'm I'm pretty knowledge going
- 22:02Speaker 1: on the subject after you know, after all these years,
- 22:06Speaker 1: and you know, I got some great partners. I got
- 22:09Speaker 1: some great partners across the US. You know, I got
- 22:12Speaker 1: Native Electric, I mean net Electric here in California. You
- 22:17Speaker 1: know that's a minority owned you know. I got sst
- 22:21Speaker 1: here in California. I got Ken Knicks in Atlanta next
- 22:24Speaker 1: to associates. I got and ce uh in Chicago. So
- 22:29Speaker 1: I've tried to cover myself, uh, you know, all over
- 22:32Speaker 1: the country. I got Salt Energy in Virginia and so
- 22:38Speaker 1: you know in Chicago Electric in Chicago up there. Oh yeah,
- 22:42Speaker 1: I'm sorry that that that's in Chicago. I'm trying to
- 22:45Speaker 1: cover parts of the world and uh and also trying
- 22:48Speaker 1: to make uh, you know, make some money at the
- 22:50Speaker 1: same time to support, you know, my family and the
- 22:53Speaker 1: people that you know surround me. You know the thing
- 22:56Speaker 1: I love and you talk about is that you know,
- 22:58Speaker 1: because I'm not apology to Chicago law that Mercy followed
- 23:02Speaker 1: your Chicago Cubs followed you to the Dollar Show. I'm
- 23:07Speaker 1: sorry I brought it up. I'm sorry I brought it up.
- 23:09Speaker 1: I'm sorry brought it because you know from you learn
- 23:13Speaker 1: from it. You learn from because as an African America,
- 23:15Speaker 1: you know, I'm rooting for you, brother, I root for
- 23:17Speaker 1: black box. I root for black managers, okay, and black
- 23:20Speaker 1: head coaches. Brother, I'll just let you know because I
- 23:22Speaker 1: know the opportunity to achieve to get that job as unique,
- 23:26Speaker 1: and to achieve the highest level of success is even
- 23:29Speaker 1: more unique. And so but I love the fact that
- 23:32Speaker 1: usaid Richard, I'm not gonna just sit at home and
- 23:34Speaker 1: wait for my next job. I'm gonna make my opportunities
- 23:38Speaker 1: now before we get off the family wines, how can
- 23:42Speaker 1: we before we go back to Baker, how can we
- 23:44Speaker 1: how can we purchase gain access to these great wine
- 23:47Speaker 1: because I gotta get something from my wife. I'm gonna
- 23:49Speaker 1: just let you know right now. You sound like yourself.
- 23:54Speaker 1: That's stump to some man. You know, sometimes you do
- 23:58Speaker 1: things like you you're you're it's a foolish That was
- 24:00Speaker 1: a foolish move because because like you said, saying, man,
- 24:03Speaker 1: that's a that's a trophy case. I didn't know that.
- 24:05Speaker 1: And I'm telling that boot man was was a life
- 24:08Speaker 1: size boot and it was three quarters up there, and
- 24:11Speaker 1: for some reason in my stupid mind, I went, well,
- 24:15Speaker 1: this is worthless. I just threw him away. And she
- 24:17Speaker 1: came home and she saw that boot empty. She go, Okay,
- 24:20Speaker 1: where are my corks at? I go? Huh? I said, well,
- 24:22Speaker 1: you know, baby, I felt it was just uh, I
- 24:25Speaker 1: just threw him away. Man, she didn't, she didn't say nothing.
- 24:28Speaker 1: She's walked out of the ruin. They so listen, you could, Yeah,
- 24:37Speaker 1: you could. You can go online or you know, Baker
- 24:41Speaker 1: Family Wines dot com, or you can email, uh you know,
- 24:45Speaker 1: the office and be n B like b A N
- 24:49Speaker 1: D B Wine Company at gmail dot com. And uh,
- 24:55Speaker 1: you know that will happen today. Okay, I'm not surprising
- 24:59Speaker 1: because of the fact she's a big fan of you
- 25:01Speaker 1: and so happy that you're now managing the Asteroids and
- 25:04Speaker 1: those one season only but man, the fact that you're there.
- 25:07Speaker 1: But more importantly, it's pretty happy to you know what
- 25:10Speaker 1: I mean. I'm you know, the Lord did this because
- 25:13Speaker 1: there's no way that I was going in here to
- 25:14Speaker 1: go a great team like this and uh, you know,
- 25:18Speaker 1: uh the only thing this and in my baseball career
- 25:21Speaker 1: is a championship, which I thought my career was over
- 25:23Speaker 1: because you know now that you know, there's always been
- 25:26Speaker 1: you know, you know, a certain amount of racial discrimination,
- 25:29Speaker 1: but now there's now there's age and salary discrimination and
- 25:33Speaker 1: intellectual discrimination where everybody want to know what college you
- 25:37Speaker 1: went to, you know, regardless of how much knowledge or
- 25:41Speaker 1: how much experience that you have. So this is, this
- 25:44Speaker 1: gives me an opportunity to try to win a couple
- 25:47Speaker 1: of championships. I need a hundred and thirty seven victories,
- 25:50Speaker 1: you know, to be uh, you know, first African American
- 25:53Speaker 1: to win two thousand twelve people. So, um, you know
- 25:59Speaker 1: this is this is kind of a legacy of God.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Said said, yeah, and and and it's a great town.
- 26:05Speaker 1: You know, like you said, I've been going to Houston
- 26:07Speaker 1: forever and ever. And uh, you know, my best friend
- 26:10Speaker 1: Ralph Guard the one we mentioned earlier, he's the one
- 26:13Speaker 1: that that you know that's that's in Houston, he said, Baker,
- 26:16Speaker 1: I was praying for you to get that job and
- 26:19Speaker 1: speedy rap that third base. Brother. It was all over
- 26:24Speaker 1: the thing right there. You know, it's really it's really great.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Let I'll be remissing if I got to bring up
- 26:30Speaker 1: this last business. Okay, Well, you know your you's a
- 26:33Speaker 1: chairman along with my man, uh Robert cool Bell. If
- 26:37Speaker 1: you don't know Robert Coolbell, that's from Cool in the
- 26:39Speaker 1: game cool Down and uh and cool Baker Global tell
- 26:44Speaker 1: us about that and uh and how that how did
- 26:46Speaker 1: that relationship come about? Well, you know, like I went
- 26:50Speaker 1: to Africa about ten or twelve years ago with you know,
- 26:53Speaker 1: with uh some baseball delegates and also uh you know
- 26:58Speaker 1: professor Delaware State as her own and uh you know
- 27:02Speaker 1: as I started it, uh you know Dave Winfield, when
- 27:06Speaker 1: Reggie Smith, o'marmonia, Wendy Lewis Ambassador Bridgewater was there and
- 27:11Speaker 1: a brother George and Tim from Ghana. So we all
- 27:15Speaker 1: went to Ghana and uh you know we came back.
- 27:19Speaker 1: Uh you know, we came back like you know, knowing
- 27:22Speaker 1: that how much people are in need in Africa and
- 27:26Speaker 1: how you know, how we're falling behind, especially in the
- 27:29Speaker 1: energy field. So I got a call about this is
- 27:33Speaker 1: ten years later, I get a call from from from
- 27:38Speaker 1: Cool Cool, Uh you know Robert cool Bell Cool in
- 27:42Speaker 1: the King. So I said, hey man, he goes, I said,
- 27:45Speaker 1: how I know this is Cool in the gang and
- 27:46Speaker 1: he goes, well, Kim Griffy Senor is my cousin. So
- 27:50Speaker 1: he started singing so fresh and so fresh. I figured
- 27:53Speaker 1: out that that that it was really him. And so
- 27:57Speaker 1: then so we started talking. And my daughter, who does
- 28:00Speaker 1: all my labels, she did the Baker Family wine label,
- 28:03Speaker 1: and she did the Cool Baker Global uh uh logo.
- 28:08Speaker 1: And so he's traveled extensively through Africa and performed extensively
- 28:15Speaker 1: and so uh through Ezra and Cool you know, we
- 28:18Speaker 1: went to Delaware State, uh you know, visited them the
- 28:22Speaker 1: African Peer Review Mechanism. Uh you know, we met a
- 28:26Speaker 1: bunch of African dignitaries, and so we're trying to take
- 28:30Speaker 1: uh you know, some energy to Africa in the forms
- 28:33Speaker 1: of solar or co jin or a combination of of
- 28:38Speaker 1: of ways. And because they don't have lights, you know,
- 28:41Speaker 1: and if you don't have lights, how do you kids study?
- 28:43Speaker 1: How do they? I mean, they don't have hardly nothing,
- 28:48Speaker 1: and so uh you know in that in the you know,
- 28:51Speaker 1: they're currently thirty eight of fifty five nations in Africa
- 28:56Speaker 1: are in the eight p r M and uh so
- 29:00Speaker 1: this is what we're trying to do, even install some
- 29:02Speaker 1: you know, because the coronavirus you know, I mean people
- 29:06Speaker 1: aren't allowed to go. But Cool it's really really hooked
- 29:09Speaker 1: up there. And so, uh, you know, his combination of
- 29:13Speaker 1: people that you know and that you don't know in
- 29:16Speaker 1: Africa already and and us being in the you know,
- 29:20Speaker 1: the energy business. You can't do it by ourselves. I mean,
- 29:23Speaker 1: we need some help, you know, which is teak tough.
- 29:27Speaker 1: You know, yeah, teamwork, which is tough to find. And
- 29:30Speaker 1: uh and uh. But you know, if there's a will,
- 29:33Speaker 1: there's a way, and we're gonna find, you know, find
- 29:35Speaker 1: a way to do it. I'll tell you. I'm on
- 29:37Speaker 1: the website right now, Baker Family Wines website. I wanted
- 29:41Speaker 1: right now, you know, alright, I'm going from the dugout
- 29:44Speaker 1: to the vineyard. That's what I'm saying. Right guy, don't
- 29:48Speaker 1: down see the team with the cool glasses on in
- 29:52Speaker 1: the venue. You're saying. You know, I'm looking at you
- 29:56Speaker 1: got the sun glasses all? You know? They did you that?
- 30:00Speaker 1: The turn dark when you walk out in the sunlight.
- 30:02Speaker 1: I know what you are. I know what I can't see.
- 30:05Speaker 1: I can't see that, but that's that's what your trademark.
- 30:09Speaker 1: And you walked down the street without those glasses. So
- 30:11Speaker 1: who that dude? Who's that dude? Exactly the other day
- 30:14Speaker 1: somebody has hey words your toothpicks. I don't know. My mother, Well,
- 30:20Speaker 1: I got the email addressed the gmail I see all
- 30:23Speaker 1: listeners is our wines. You will be getting the email
- 30:26Speaker 1: for me today. I'm gonna see see my wife, so
- 30:29Speaker 1: you know I love her. But more importantly, Dustin, I
- 30:32Speaker 1: want you to bring you on the show man to
- 30:34Speaker 1: say thank you for being you, but more importantly tell
- 30:36Speaker 1: your story a little bit outside of the baseball world.
- 30:39Speaker 1: A lot of people New Zealand, Canada, you know, Ireland,
- 30:43Speaker 1: they listen to my podcast and my talk shows. You
- 30:46Speaker 1: say why, I say wow too, because I don't know
- 30:48Speaker 1: who listened to New Zealand, but they're listening at that
- 30:50Speaker 1: time down there in Australia, and it's it's that worldwide
- 30:54Speaker 1: effect that I wanted when I when I stop managing
- 30:56Speaker 1: Steve Harvey, just like you said, your legacy is important
- 30:59Speaker 1: and my they can see if when man with some
- 31:02Speaker 1: bad boys, I was looking at you. Think about it.
- 31:05Speaker 1: The thing I'm really impressed with. I mean, I was
- 31:08Speaker 1: pretty good at man. I didn't. I didn't like it
- 31:10Speaker 1: because I couldn't be s he got. You gotta be
- 31:12Speaker 1: exact for for man to be a math major who
- 31:17Speaker 1: I got? I got mad respect for you. Man, How
- 31:21Speaker 1: did you get to do that? I mean, did you
- 31:23Speaker 1: like it that much? You know? I'm gonna tell you
- 31:25Speaker 1: something It was like I avoided it all my life.
- 31:28Speaker 1: You know, I could always go back to high school
- 31:30Speaker 1: and my and my math teacher told me I was
- 31:32Speaker 1: good at it. But I went to school. I wanted
- 31:34Speaker 1: to be anything else that can give me an easy grade. Okay,
- 31:37Speaker 1: that was what That's why I was anything that can
- 31:38Speaker 1: give me easy and I struggled. It took me seven
- 31:43Speaker 1: years to graduate, but only three years once I got
- 31:46Speaker 1: my act together. You know. It was it was four
- 31:48Speaker 1: years of trying to get get by easy, trying to
- 31:50Speaker 1: get the easy course, to talk to my friends. Hey
- 31:53Speaker 1: mean that's an easy grade over there, goal, easy grade
- 31:55Speaker 1: over there. And then I realized, you know something, be
- 31:58Speaker 1: who people would expect you to be. And I'm math man.
- 32:01Speaker 1: I went in there. Man. I couldn't afford math books,
- 32:04Speaker 1: calculus book and I would walk in that room, Dusty.
- 32:06Speaker 1: I would look at the board, walk out cal one,
- 32:10Speaker 1: Caw two, Carl three, without a math book, and every
- 32:13Speaker 1: guy that was alb to geomic, I said, Mama, please,
- 32:17Speaker 1: that's enough. Well you know some brother, I want to
- 32:21Speaker 1: thank you. I want to appreciate you for saying who
- 32:24Speaker 1: you are and being in Houston. Boy, yeah my country,
- 32:27Speaker 1: not we're gonna when this pandemic ends, and when you
- 32:30Speaker 1: come down to Atlanta. I got I got a little
- 32:32Speaker 1: small fishing leg back behind me. Walking is right on
- 32:34Speaker 1: my top. You know. I like to fish. You know
- 32:37Speaker 1: something you can find me. I go down to busy
