Latest / Run Mountain Peaks / Ranking the NH 4,000 Footers
Transcript
- 0:00OK, welcome back to another episode of Run Mountain Peaks.
- 0:04I think this is the coldest weather that I've recorded in
- 0:07thus far. So I'm hoping my equipment
- 0:10stands the test of the weather we get this all recorded.
- 0:14But we have, I have a fun one today.
- 0:16I'm excited to do this. The first topic I'm going to be
- 0:19ranking the 4000 footers, like which ones are my favorite?
- 0:24We're going to go from last to 1st.
- 0:28There's going to be lots of probably controversy.
- 0:30There's going to be lots of, I mean, I have a few that I don't
- 0:33think are going to be normal picks, but I think it's going to
- 0:36be fun to do. It's going to be a little
- 0:38chaotic, but we're going to go through all of them.
- 0:41We'll do it by heights and not peaks.
- 0:43So I don't kind of talk about the 48 individual.
- 0:47I think there's 29 hikes that I'm going to rank.
- 0:50So we'll do that. And yeah, I think it'll be a fun
- 0:53one to do. Talk about each of the peaks.
- 0:55Honestly, I love all the all the peaks except for one hike.
- 1:00I will repeatedly and forever, maybe not forever talk smack
- 1:05about and say that I actually don't like these peaks.
- 1:08So I'm in. I think I'm going to do last the
- 1:10first. So you're just going to get this
- 1:12immediately. My least favorite peaks, but
- 1:14there's only one set of mountains that I don't like.
- 1:16The rest of them I, I, I really do enjoy.
- 1:19So it's going to be hard to rank, you know, which ones are
- 1:21at the low lowest totem pole, but I'm kind of telling them,
- 1:23hey, you know, chin up. I I do like hiking you and I'm
- 1:27going to keep getting out on you, but you didn't need to make
- 1:30the cut like some of the big ones.
- 1:32So we're going to do that. And then the ultra scene racing,
- 1:38winter racing is kicking up this weekend and next weekend.
- 1:42So we have a a few races I want to preview some big races, some
- 1:47exciting races to follow, some long races in the cold and some
- 1:52sluggers are are going out there and doing these races.
- 1:54So next weekend it's going to be the last skier standing White
- 1:58Mountain Ski Company every hour on the hour kind of backyard
- 2:02event. Next weekend we have the Tark
- 2:04Frozen Yeti race, which is a 30 hour and a 15 mile.
- 2:08So out there in the cold and then the Frozen Heart 900 in
- 2:13Connecticut don't know much about it, but I'll give you a
- 2:16little bit of info a little preview on that didn't know much
- 2:20now I deal I'll fill you guys in and then right now this weekend,
- 2:24the last Nordic skier standing also by White Mountain ski
- 2:29companies going on. We'll talk about that quick.
- 2:32This one was on ultra sign up, but I, I got AI looked at the
- 2:35tracker because they're currently going.
- 2:36So I'll, I'll fill in what's going on there and then if it
- 2:41ends before Sunday, maybe I'll maybe I'll add this to the end
- 2:45and, and put the results in this week.
- 2:49So those are the topics today. I'm excited to dive into it.
- 2:53Before we get into ranking the 4000 footers, we're going to do
- 2:57a 62nd training talk training tip for you.
- 3:01I've talked about hillstrides before.
- 3:04Lots of people, I feel like in the last couple years have been
- 3:06talking about hillstrides. Everyone should be doing their
- 3:09hillstrides, no matter if you're a short distance runner, an
- 3:12ultra runner, they're very, very good to do.
- 3:15They increase your power output, they increase your strength,
- 3:19your turnover. If you're used to running a lot
- 3:21of slow miles, mix these in and they'll give you a little bit of
- 3:24speed boost without like destroying your legs like a
- 3:27speed workout would. So they're lower risk than hard
- 3:31speed workouts and you get some of the speed benefits of them.
- 3:35And my 1 tip is they they usually say to do 20 to 30
- 3:39seconds reps, 6 to 8, No, yeah, 20 to 30 seconds per Rep and
- 3:45then do 6 to 8 reps at the end of like an easy run or a
- 3:49moderate run. Do that two or three times a
- 3:51week. And then what I like to do is
- 3:53once a week at least do them at the end of your long run,
- 3:57because sometimes if you do a 234 hour long run, your legs are
- 4:01very tired. Everyone knows what that feels
- 4:03like at the end of your run. And I've noticed that if I do
- 4:07strides at the end of a long run when I'm really tired, it almost
- 4:10like wakes my legs back up and says like, hey, you can still
- 4:13run fast, you can still be strong.
- 4:16Don't go to bed yet. And I think I've done this
- 4:19before, some of my ulcers, and I think it does really help.
- 4:21So do your hill strides and try them at the end of your long
- 4:24run. I think they will.
- 4:26They will help you out. And if you haven't been doing
- 4:28them, you're going to probably get quick gains from doing them.
- 4:30So it's something good to try. If you have any questions about
- 4:33the Hill Strides, send me an e-mail,
- 4:36andrew@runmountainpeaks.com. And also, I just uploaded a full
- 4:42document of what I prioritize in training nutrition recovery, a
- 4:47free downloadable PDF. It's on my website,
- 4:50runmountainpeaks.com. If you want it, go in there and
- 4:54download it. Right now I have it set up.
- 4:56You have to put in your billing address, although it doesn't ask
- 4:59you for a card or anything else or any money, it's free.
- 5:03So you you might go on there and it might ask you for your
- 5:05address. I'm not going to do anything
- 5:07with your address. I won't look at your address.
- 5:10Put in your address and then it just gives it to you.
- 5:13I'm going to try to set it up where you don't need to put in
- 5:15the address and you don't need to check out.
- 5:17But I don't know if I will get to it this weekend.
- 5:21I'm a runner, not a tech developer.
- 5:23So, but anyway, if you want that free guide, just some of the
- 5:27things that I think about and prioritize in my own training
- 5:30coaching, go down there and download it, give it a whirls.
- 5:34Tell me what you think of it. OK, now getting into the topics
- 5:39for today. So we're going to do Oh, no, I,
- 5:42I OK, we'll do 1 little quick topic before we do the ranking,
- 5:45the 4000 footers. I'm going to make you wake one
- 5:47more quick minute. I, I have had down here J.
- 5:50Cole hype as I before a lot of my speed workouts and before my
- 5:57ultra marathons. I love listening to J.
- 5:59Cole hype up music. It's always offseason.
- 6:02The album, those songs, it just gets me fired up.
- 6:06So like if I'm going to do a speed workout and get ready, put
- 6:08my stuff on, I'm rocking that in the background.
- 6:11I've noticed that for these cold podcasts, I've been putting that
- 6:15on in the background as I'm layering up to go outside.
- 6:18And so I need a little bit of J. Cole hype today.
- 6:21And he's dropping a new album February 6th, I think, so who
- 6:24knows if it will be good. But yeah, that was just the J
- 6:28I'm. I just think it's funny, like
- 6:29these podcasts in the winter are getting like on the level of
- 6:33speed workout needing to pump me up to get out here.
- 6:36But I mean, obviously I love doing them.
- 6:37But OK, that was AJ Cole hype. And now we're going to get into
- 6:43the topics today. So ranking the 4000 footers.
- 6:47I got the whole list here. Like I said, there's a few
- 6:49ground rules. So we'll go through the ground
- 6:52rules to start, because like I said, I'm not going to rank them
- 6:5848 to one. I'm going to group them in terms
- 7:01of how most people hike them. So like the most efficient way
- 7:05to hike these peaks, if you're doing lists, doing the grid or
- 7:08just getting your 48 done, I'm going to link them together like
- 7:11that. And there's there's some of them
- 7:14that are hard, like which ones do you actually link together?
- 7:16So as we get to them, I'll just talk about my rationale, but
- 7:21that's how we're going to do it. So it's going to be 29 total
- 7:23hikes and we're going to try to have no bias for location or
- 7:29drive time. So just because you live in one
- 7:32area and it takes you 3 hours to get to 1 in an hour and a half
- 7:35to get to the other, we're not going to hold that against peaks
- 7:39that are just, you know, but were born a little bit north or
- 7:42a little bit whatever. So we're going to try not to
- 7:44hold that against them. And then we're not they're not
- 7:46going to have bias for how difficult the hike is.
- 7:49So obviously some of these hikes are super short and some of
- 7:52these hypes hikes are really long.
- 7:54So if I'm looking for a long day, I'm not going to give
- 7:56negative points to a shorter hike.
- 7:58And if I'm looking for a short day, I'm not going to give
- 8:00extra. You know, if I'm tired, don't
- 8:03want to do a long day, I'm not going to think, oh, I don't want
- 8:04to do this because it's long. It's strictly going to be what
- 8:08mountains do I like to be on the most?
- 8:12Like which which ones do I enjoy the most?
- 8:14So it's not like best views. It's just which ones do I like
- 8:17the most? I'm most hyped up to be driving
- 8:20to go do that's how we're going to do it.
- 8:23And I was thinking about this like, should I assume there are
- 8:26people on the trail or no? Because I mean, that is like a
- 8:30factor on, you know, if you're getting out on a weekend, like
- 8:33if you see a lot of people that does kind of play into it.
- 8:36I'm going to basically go mostly no, I'm going to kind of treat
- 8:38it as like if I'm going up on a weekday, it's not going to be
- 8:42bothersome. Like there's not going to be any
- 8:44like Congo lines on these trails while I'm picturing them.
- 8:48So that's not going to the most popular peaks aren't going to
- 8:50get negative points for being just crazy busy.
- 8:54So those are the ground rules and how let's dive into it.
- 8:59So First off, I said I there's only one set of peaks that I
- 9:04dislike. I've I think it's just something
- 9:08against a piece. I don't know, maybe, maybe there
- 9:11are. I just think I've never had good
- 9:13days on them. I don't think they're they have
- 9:16any outlying great qualities to them, although there's one, but
- 9:22I've just had crappy times on them.
- 9:24I maybe done them 678 times. So I've been on on them a lot.
- 9:29It is Tom Field and Willie, my last least favorite peaks.
- 9:35Like I said, Mount Avalon. You usually tag Avalon when
- 9:38you're doing it, which is like awesome views into the Prezis.
- 9:42So that has something going for it.
- 9:44I mean, it's kind of unique woods, but every time I'm on
- 9:47those peaks it's either cold winter, a ton of snow.
- 9:51That Ridge is always longer than you think.
- 9:55I've done some postal missions. I've done, I fell in spruce
- 9:58traps. I've lost things on the Ridge.
- 10:01I've been there in rain, I've been there in clouds.
- 10:03I've never had any good weather on them, which is partly on me,
- 10:06but also if I've been there 678 times, I don't know the exact
- 10:10number. And you've never done it for me.
- 10:12I don't know. So those are my least favorite
- 10:15peaks. I will openly say that I don't
- 10:18like those peaks. And those are the only peaks in
- 10:21the Whites that I actually think that I dislike.
- 10:26And so that is the bottom of my list for me.
- 10:28I don't know. I don't know if you actually
- 10:29people really like that hike. It's it's actually a good hike
- 10:32in terms of getting three peaks done.
- 10:34If you're gritting like what is that?
- 10:37Is that .5% of the grid or whatever, like you actually, or
- 10:40if you're doing the 48, that's three of the 48 six percent of
- 10:43the the the list. It's it's actually kind of nice.
- 10:46They're they're nearby, but I just hate them.
- 10:50So they're last on my list. Sorry, not sorry from here.
- 10:55I like all of the peaks, but there has to be a 29.
- 11:00Oh, we have to pause here. Hi there.
- 11:05How's it going? OK, dog Walker, that was I.
- 11:16I do have to cut that out. There's a longer pause.
- 11:18OK, so that was 30. Oh, was that thirty?
- 11:23OK, so I lied to you guys. It's actually 30 hikes.
- 11:25Oh yeah. I split one up at the last
- 11:27minute. So there's 30 hikes.
- 11:28That's #30 sorry, not sorry. Next up again.
- 11:32So I like this peak. I like going out on it, but
- 11:34someone has to be 29. It is hail and I'll be honest,
- 11:39hail. When I first did this list, hail
- 11:41was a couple spots up. Hail was a couple spots up
- 11:44because every time I go on hail, I think I just like it.
- 11:48There's no views. It's a short, like what is it, 4
- 11:52miles? It's a very quick one to do.
- 11:54It's kind of like a Tecumseh. It's short, but the trail's
- 11:58nice. I think I just get good vibes
- 12:00down low. I get good vibes.
- 12:01I always see like moose tracks or deer tracks.
- 12:04There's a little water crossing. You got that side hill 1 winter
- 12:07I was chest deep in that side hill.
- 12:10If the if the snow depth gets really deep at the end of the
- 12:15winter you can't see above the trees or you used to be able to.
- 12:19It's a nice little peek but aside from me, just like them
- 12:22going out on it, it doesn't really have much going for it.
- 12:25It's got a road walk in the winter which is usually negative
- 12:27points. I don't hate a road walk but I
- 12:31don't love a road walk. So hail is 29.
- 12:34Sorry, but had to be had to be in there.
- 12:37Next up we're going to do Zealand.
- 12:40So sometimes you link these together.
- 12:41Halen Zealand, Zealand again, it doesn't have anything crazy good
- 12:46going for it. You got Zealand Hut.
- 12:48A lot of people would go to Zealand Hut.
- 12:50If you do AZ bonds, it's a great it's a great one to do on Z
- 12:53bonds. Z Cliff is really a really nice
- 12:56outlook on it, but there's some bog bridges.
- 12:59It's kind of nice, you get a little bit of open terrain, but
- 13:04I don't know, it just it just, it doesn't really hit for me too
- 13:06hard. And I think a lot of people
- 13:09maybe, maybe would agree with this one.
- 13:11Zealand being a little bit low on the list.
- 13:12But yeah, I think Z Cliff having Z Cliff put it above Hale, if
- 13:17didn't have Z Cliff below Hale. Zealand is number 28 #27 is
- 13:23Gailhead. Gailhead, What are you doing up
- 13:27there, buddy? What are you doing up here?
- 13:31And I actually, no, I don't feel bad about this one.
- 13:33Galehead. I actually love the view from
- 13:36the Hut. I like being, this is one thing
- 13:38I will talk about in this list. I like being in a view.
- 13:41I like kind of having a Ridge or mountain kind of above me right
- 13:44in your face. And it has a nice view at, at,
- 13:48at the Hut at Galehead Hut. You have a Hut if you want food
- 13:51or whatever, it's kind of nice. But if you're doing a Pemi, an
- 13:56extended Pemi, you're tagging all the peaks.
- 13:58You're like, why am I going out here?
- 13:59If you're doing any, honestly, any sort of little thing on my
- 14:02last year Dodge, I had to tag it too.
- 14:04I'm like, why am I going to this little peak?
- 14:06There's no view at the top. It's a little bit longer than
- 14:09you always think to get to it. Like I don't know if it's a
- 14:12quarter mile in my head it's always like .1, but it's like
- 14:15no, it's actually like a quarter mile.
- 14:18So, yeah, so GAIL hits 27, but the approach, like most people
- 14:23come from Gale River Road or along the Gale River Trail,
- 14:27whatever that's called, I like it.
- 14:28It's gradual grade. Cats get gets a little steep
- 14:31before you get up to the Hut. It's kind of like nice, like
- 14:35rainforesty, I don't know, like a grainy.
- 14:37It's got a nice feel to it, the trail, but I just don't love
- 14:40that it's there. I don't always love tagging
- 14:42Galehead, and I think some people would agree with me.
- 14:44So Galehead is 27. Next up, 26.
- 14:50AL's Head. I think I've, I've talked about
- 14:52Alice said on the podcast maybe before or maybe it's a couple of
- 14:56little jokes about, Alice said. I have mixed, I've had mixed
- 15:01reviews on AL's head. This is one that I've been to a
- 15:04handful of times. A few times it's been it's been
- 15:07bad. I didn't like it.
- 15:08A few times it's been good. And I think AL's head is 1 it's,
- 15:13you know, 8 miles out and back. Most of it's flat.
- 15:15So it's just kind of like a regular trail.
- 15:17Like there's lots of flatter, lower elevation trails that you
- 15:20could go on. It's got lots of water crossing,
- 15:23so it always makes it could be annoying in the spring.
- 15:27It obviously doesn't have a view.
- 15:28It's in the middle of nowhere, which honestly kind of gives it
- 15:30points. You're feeling like you're out
- 15:32in the middle of nowhere. Like, what are we doing out here
- 15:33is kind of like a a fun thing. But unless you're having a bad
- 15:36day that, you know, like this is stupid.
- 15:39The black pawn bushwhack makes it easier.
- 15:42So it's a lot shorter if you go that way.
- 15:43But yeah, just nothing redeeming about AL's head.
- 15:47I mean, the black pawn, the view up to the bonds through the
- 15:49black pawn's always nice. If you hit it in the morning a
- 15:52little, you know, some colors in the sky, it's good.
- 15:55But yeah, I'm not a huge fan. I'm not, I'm not a a hater per
- 16:00SE. I'm not the world's biggest
- 16:01hater, but I'm not the biggest fan of AL's Head and, and yeah,
- 16:06what what what's saying about that?
- 16:08One of my favorite jokes too, is on the grid spreadsheet, if you
- 16:11go to like maybe 5 or 6, the five or fifth or sixth grid
- 16:17sheet, it says you really want to hike ALSAID 60 times.
- 16:20That's kind of how I feel about Alsaid.
- 16:23But it's a unique, it's one of the longer ones you get out
- 16:26there. So I, I bumped it up on the
- 16:27list. It's not one of the last, last
- 16:29ones. So that's 26, 25.
- 16:32This is going to be controversial and my phone's on.
- 16:36I might have to take this in two, two records, but that's
- 16:38fine. This is going to be
- 16:40controversial, but I'm going with the Osceolas.
- 16:44Oh, screams and shouts, screams and shouts.
- 16:47How come the Osceolas? Everyone loves the Osceolas.
- 16:50I like the Osceolas, but I will say the view from Osceola, I
- 16:57think people love it. It's one of like the easier,
- 17:00nicer views and hikes that people do at the beginning.
- 17:03I just don't, I don't love the view for some reason.
- 17:05It's, it's a great view, but it's not like wow, jaw-dropping
- 17:09in between the peaks is always just a little bit annoying.
- 17:12I don't, I mean, I don't know why I feel that way.
- 17:14And I've done Osceola's maybe 12/13/14 times.
- 17:18Like I've done them a ton with all the Jigger Johnson races and
- 17:21all the things going up and over them.
- 17:23I've seen them in good stages, bad stages, winter, cold, warm,
- 17:26you name it. And they just don't do it for
- 17:29me. I mean, E Osceola is a good
- 17:31climb. You get some good views out
- 17:34there. You get a nice view across the
- 17:36the Ridge, but it doesn't do it for me.
- 17:39The trail up to Osceola from Tripoli is so eroded, like it's
- 17:42so rocky just because so many people hike it.
- 17:45That's always kind of annoying. I shouldn't be higher because
- 17:49I've been your Johnson races. It's kind of like in, I don't
- 17:52know, but it's not so, so it hit 25 on the list for me, 24, a
- 18:01neighbor, one nearby. We're going to go with the
- 18:04Hancocks. I think this is one that a lot
- 18:07of people would say is should be lower or definitely should be
- 18:10lower than Osceola, but I've always enjoyed the Hancocks.
- 18:15I think you actually get good views.
- 18:17You get nice views up to that Arrow slide or whatever it's
- 18:20called. N Hancock, you get good views.
- 18:23S Hancock, you can stay out to Carrigan.
- 18:26You get good views. It's kind of a flat, you know,
- 18:29also kind of a getting out there kind of feel.
- 18:32You get out in the middle of nowhere.
- 18:34You get a little inclined, you get big steep ascent descents.
- 18:38The loop is is pretty quick. It's always always goes quicker
- 18:41than I think it will go. So I just like the Hancocks.
- 18:45So that that's why it bumped up on the list for me to 24.
- 18:48I always enjoy getting on the Hancocks.
- 18:50I've done them a bunch, 8-9, maybe 10 times.
- 18:53And it's just, it's just been a good friend of mine.
- 18:56So they have so they both go up there and my, I mean my, my, my,
- 19:02my, my parents, some of my family watches this now.
- 19:04Like I can't make any jokes about the Hancocks. 2323 is I
- 19:10have Wombach, 23 is Wombach, Wambach is 1 for me.
- 19:16I always have good days on Wambach.
- 19:19Does it have a ton of redeeming qualities?
- 19:21It has good views out to the Prezis that you know those
- 19:23couple views, you know the one right past the summit and then
- 19:27the one at that little chimney Hut thing or whatever.
- 19:30It's steep right at the go. It's kind of a good mix of
- 19:32woods. It's kind of open, hardwoodsy
- 19:34and then you get up to the the thicker stuff.
- 19:38It's just got a good vibe, but it doesn't have a ton ton going
- 19:40for it. But I I really just enjoy every
- 19:43time I'm out there. You can RIP up and you can RIP
- 19:45down it. I ran that on the Kilkenny Ridge
- 19:48race out and back. So wound back is 23 for me.
- 19:52Shout out solid, solid peak. I like it.
- 19:55Next up, 22 the twins. I think this one may maybe get a
- 20:01couple gasps. The twins.
- 20:02There's such good views. Big piece, middle of the Pemi.
- 20:05I don't know. Yeah, this is it's going to get
- 20:08tough. That's the thing here.
- 20:09It's going to get really tough. And I have to list.
- 20:13I have to list them, put them somewhere.
- 20:16And for me, they, they fell here.
- 20:18I like the approach from Gale River or what?
- 20:22Or not Gale River, the north. I don't even know what that
- 20:26river's called Twin River, whatever you know, I'm talking
- 20:28about, or maybe you don't. There's a lot of people that
- 20:31actually are not from the northeast.
- 20:35Two percent, 2 1/2 percent are like 3% of listener listeners
- 20:40are from Australia or listener is from Australia.
- 20:44That means like a couple people have listened to every episode
- 20:47in Australia. I don't know who you are, but
- 20:50shout out And if you don't, if you're for some reason from
- 20:53there and you just don't know about the 4000 footers and you
- 20:56have no idea what I'm talking about, you probably aren't
- 20:58listening to this anymore. But I'm sorry, this is a 4000
- 21:01footer only podcast today. But the twins, if you do them
- 21:06from the other way, you get the twin way from the Hut and you're
- 21:09kind of just kneel gear kneel near Galehead, which just gives
- 21:13me not the best vibes sometimes. That was that was me.
- 21:18That was just that was uncalled for, but I'll I'll keep it.
- 21:21That was mean, but I don't know. The twins are just not one.
- 21:24I rolled my ankle good on the twins once a couple years ago
- 21:27and that always stuck in my brain.
- 21:30Great views. I had to stick them somewhere.
- 21:33So 21 is where is where they they got placed.
- 21:38Oh no 22, sorry, 23 or no, no, no.
- 21:42Oh my gosh, now I'm messing up my numbers.
- 21:44Next on the list 21. I think people are like where?
- 21:48Where are these? Did he forget about these piece?
- 21:49What do we do? How did this the Carters?
- 21:52I think the Carters get a lot of heat.
- 21:55Nobody likes the Carters. Like we talked about this last
- 21:58week, some of the least grid finished peaks or you finish
- 22:02your grid on the peaks. I shout out Carter Dome.
- 22:04I finished my 48 on Carter Dome. I actually like Carter Dome.
- 22:08I think the climb up to Carter Dome is cool.
- 22:10You go to the the Hut down there, the little lake you go
- 22:13up, you get. If you go to mount height, you
- 22:15get good views and it's not like you had no views on the Carters
- 22:19as you're going across the Ridge, obviously.
- 22:22What is it? Middle Carter?
- 22:23Is that the one you get views on?
- 22:26I've only been there a few times too.
- 22:28So these are not as in my ballpark.
- 22:30But you do get views across to the presidential range, which I
- 22:34think I ranked some peaks higher because I just love, I love the
- 22:38views and the Prezis obviously, but then the views to the
- 22:42Prezis, like the closest views to the Prezis are nice to me
- 22:46too. So yeah.
- 22:47And I've always had good days on the Carters.
- 22:49I think I've been with good people when I've went and like
- 22:52that. Shouldn't, Andrew, that
- 22:53shouldn't affect your ranking of the peaks, who you went with.
- 22:57It does. You know, it's how I feel about
- 22:59the peaks. It's the one that I want to go
- 23:01to. So again, everyone may have
- 23:03their own list, but this is my list and it's correct.
- 23:07No, it's not, But OK, all right, The phone is dying here rapidly,
- 23:11and I didn't bring the extra charger, but we're going to keep
- 23:13going, powering through here. OK, I remember the next two.
- 23:17Next up #20 is Tecumseh. This is one that probably could
- 23:22have got lower on the list for some people.
- 23:23But again, I've always had good days on Tecumseh.
- 23:28It's a closer one from your yes, but it's a, it's a, it's got a
- 23:32great view of Waterville Valley. I like the view out to the
- 23:34Osceolas. It's nice quick.
- 23:37It just, I don't know, it always is there for me.
- 23:39I feel like it's a peak that is going to be there for me if I
- 23:42got it need to go on a bad weather day.
- 23:44I just feel like you always know what you're going to get and it
- 23:47always just delivers kind of like going back to my top
- 23:50favorite fruits. It's kind of like a banana.
- 23:53It's got no wow factor, but it's it's the peak I've been on the
- 23:56most. It's the one that I can I know
- 23:58what I'm going to get every day and it's the one I've done the
- 24:02most. I think I've done it at least 15
- 24:03times, maybe closer to 20. And and I like it go from the
- 24:08front. The backside is awesome from
- 24:10triple I Rd. way quieter. That was my first 4000 footer
- 24:15ever actually from triple I Rd. So yeah, I, I, I like it.
- 24:20I like it. So that's what we got for 20.
- 24:25Shout out Tecumseh and the view's great. 4001 feet.
- 24:29If the seas. This is another grid grid thing.
- 24:31If the seas, what does he say? If the seas are to rise by
- 24:36whatever, 20-30, this may not be a 4000 further anymore.
- 24:40That's on one of the grid spreadsheets as well.
- 24:43OK, Next up we have Da Da Da da Mariah, number 19.
- 24:50I think Mariah, it's kind of like a Carter's.
- 24:53I think it got higher on my list than some people would have put
- 24:56on their list. But like I said, I like the
- 24:59Prezi smack dab in your face on some of the fall summits.
- 25:02You get some good views at the top.
- 25:04You get great views. It's a longer hike, but I've
- 25:08just always had good days on it. This is another one I've only
- 25:12done a few times, few 43 few four times, but I, I just had
- 25:17good days. It's got a good mix of terrain
- 25:20and, and it made it up on the list for me.
- 25:23So get mad at me if you want, but I don't care.
- 25:25Mariah, shout out #18 We're going with Tri pyramids.
- 25:33I think this may, this may turn some heads.
- 25:35What there's some on the list that you haven't said Tri
- 25:37pyramids #18 I like to try pyramids.
- 25:40I think the north side is awesome, super fun, great views,
- 25:43like amazing views. The South side, less fun, but
- 25:47also less views. But also it's it's cool.
- 25:50It's nice if you go from Pine Bend.
- 25:54I've done done pine Bend a million times.
- 25:56That's a good way to do it in the winter.
- 25:59It's just it's a solid peak. I really like it, but I think
- 26:02for the views I get, it's a terrifying 25.
- 26:05It's very, very popular. It's just, I don't know, I think
- 26:09maybe a little bit overrated, maybe sometimes.
- 26:11Oh my God, I can't believe you said that.
- 26:12Have you ever been on the slide, Andrew?
- 26:14I've been on the slide. Have you been on the slide?
- 26:15I think I did the slide like 3 times this year and it is great
- 26:19views, but I don't know. I don't know what else to say
- 26:22guys. I have an 18th on my list.
- 26:24I don't, I don't know. It's not above and beyond for
- 26:26me. I've had good days.
- 26:28I think I've had solid days, but I haven't had the greatest of
- 26:31days. I've done a bunch too, but I
- 26:35don't know, for whatever reason this one is not super high on
- 26:37the list for me, so it is what it is.
- 26:40Next up, 17 Cabot. Oh, this one got sneaky high up
- 26:45there. I like Cabot again, another one
- 26:48I've always had good days on. It's a good mix of woods.
- 26:51You feel like you're in the middle of nowhere, which you
- 26:53are. It's not really a ton of good
- 26:56views. This is maybe maybe the one that
- 26:58snuck up the highest as far as what the odds were before this
- 27:02list. I just love going up there.
- 27:05I think the drive down there's cool.
- 27:06I like looking at the fish before and after my hikes and
- 27:10the little fish canal there or the fish hatchery.
- 27:14It's good. It's a cool peak.
- 27:16It feels moosey. You see moose tracks up there.
- 27:19I've never seen a moose up there.
- 27:21You get the little cabin, which I I thought I loved the cabin.
- 27:25I you know, the I don't know. I don't know why I brought up
- 27:27the cabin. Well, I'm just talking about the
- 27:28hike. The cabin, I guess is kind of
- 27:30cool. I've never been in it or stayed
- 27:31in it. One of my buddies told me he
- 27:33stayed in. I'm like, Oh gosh, that is I
- 27:35know. I think people do stay in it,
- 27:37but it looks rundown and it looks like they're just be else
- 27:40pooping there or something. But Cabot's cool, Cabot's cool.
- 27:45I like it. I've I just love going out on on
- 27:47Cabot and if I lived closer, I think this almost got an Ant a
- 27:51reverse. What is that called?
- 27:54Reverse psychology. You know, it's so far away that
- 27:58I was like, I don't want to dock points for being far away.
- 28:00But then it slipped up too much. Cabot #17 #16 we have Garfield.
- 28:08This is another one, some of people's favorite one.
- 28:10Favorite ones. As far as the view, it's a great
- 28:13view. Middle of the penny.
- 28:14AL's head in your face. Franconia Ridge, the twins.
- 28:18I'm halfway on my Pemi loop. Garfield's a great, a great
- 28:21hike. Garfield Ridge Trail a little
- 28:25bit always slower than you think, little rocky little up
- 28:27and down the the Garfield approach from the road is, is
- 28:32very gentle, you know, 4 1/2 five miles easy grade, very
- 28:36runnable. So that's kind of smooth.
- 28:39So it has a lot of good things going for it.
- 28:40It it's got a spring, it saves you if you got water.
- 28:43And actually when I was doing the wash Dodge, I jumped the
- 28:46deer. I saw a deer at almost that at
- 28:49near the summit on Garfield, which is kind of cool.
- 28:53I don't know. I just throw that fact in, which
- 28:54obviously should make me like it more, but I don't.
- 28:57It didn't get in the IT didn't crack the top 10 for me, didn't
- 29:00crack the top 10 for me. I think if it had more views
- 29:02along the way, maybe get there. I mean, I like that kind of
- 29:06scramble at the end. I think I've slipped the good
- 29:09ways down that once in the winter on the ice.
- 29:11It's cool. It's got the the Hut up there.
- 29:13It's always freezing up there. Every time I go up there, I feel
- 29:15like I'm just freezing air. It's super windy.
- 29:20Yeah. I love Garfield, but it's just
- 29:21not it doesn't it doesn't scream top 10 to me, but it's close.
- 29:25So we put at 16 that was Garfield 15 is going to be white
- 29:31face and pass a Conway. This is 1.
- 29:36It's southern whites. It kind of feels like you're in
- 29:38a different zone of the way to when you're driving to it.
- 29:41There's only a few for me where I kind of go through the lake 1
- 29:44of Saukee area, the lakes region in New Hampshire, and that's
- 29:49kind of like a nice ride. It kind of like mixes up the
- 29:51just driving a 93 for, you know, your entire drive.
- 29:54So that's kind of like nice. It's in a different area.
- 29:57It feels a little bit quieter out there.
- 29:59And the peaks itself, I mean the blueberry ledges, right, the the
- 30:03the ledges up up to whiteface are the good views.
- 30:09It's not like stunner mountains in your face, but it's good
- 30:12Southern whites, kind of rural New Hampshire views.
- 30:16You get a little scramble, Little Rock climbing going up
- 30:18the whiteface. I've always had a good time
- 30:21whiteface to pass a Conway. It always goes quicker than I
- 30:23think, as opposed to like, like I was saying, Tom feel Willy,
- 30:26that Ridge goes slower than I think pass a Conway.
- 30:29You get you pop out to the end there.
- 30:31You get a good view out kind of to more of the the Prezis and
- 30:34the northern whites and you get that barn out and you always run
- 30:39by that that house on the way out.
- 30:41You're like, why? I wonder how many people just
- 30:42walk by this house hiking every time and they just don't care.
- 30:47I always think that I'm sure everybody does, but it's just a
- 30:49solid, solid hike. I've always enjoyed it.
- 30:52This is kind of like a cavity. Maybe it slipped up a little
- 30:56bit, but I just I just like getting out on it.
- 30:58I've always had good days. So that was 1514 isolation.
- 31:05Some people don't like isolation.
- 31:07Some people don't like going up to isolation.
- 31:09But I think isolation view and obviously that trail is super
- 31:13wet and can be very, very annoying, but I think the view,
- 31:17it's just Washington and your face right there.
- 31:21It's good view. All the southern Prezis is right
- 31:24there. It's an awesome view.
- 31:26I've had really good winter days and winter views on that peak.
- 31:29And I I like from Glenn Boulder, I'm going to give it some
- 31:33credit. If you go Glenn Boulder, which
- 31:34is you kind of get a touch of the Prezis, which I think pulled
- 31:37this hike up. And so and so isolation gets,
- 31:42gets #14 it's just like it's a good peak.
- 31:45It's kind of for me again, it's a longer one to slip up.
- 31:48I'm, I'm, I'm thinking, you know, looking at the groupings,
- 31:52do I let you know? It's a lot of the kind of near
- 31:54the Prezis ones got up higher. They outperform maybe the
- 31:58Lincoln or Southern Whites 4000 footers.
- 32:01But I think, I think that is obviously one of the big draws
- 32:04for these peaks, like the White Mountains, which peaks are the
- 32:08whitest, the longest above tree line, It's the Prezis.
- 32:12So I think if you're near the Prezis, you just kind of got
- 32:14pulled up. You kind of got pulled up a
- 32:16little bit. Next up #13 the Kinsman's.
- 32:21Love the Kinsman's. I've been on the Kinsman's a
- 32:24bunch from the front, Fish and Jimmy.
- 32:26From the back you go Bald Peak. Bald Peak is awesome.
- 32:30That's another one Ridge in your face.
- 32:32Kinsman's are great. You get the view to Franconia
- 32:35Ridge. If you go fishing, Jimmy, you
- 32:37get Lonesome Lake, which is great.
- 32:41The parking in the summer at the Franconia Notch is horrible, but
- 32:44we're not going to hold that against anybody.
- 32:46One time I actually took the trim there.
- 32:48I felt like a a nub getting on that trim.
- 32:52No, if you've taken the tram, Nah, Nah.
- 32:55If you're taking the tram, it's fine.
- 32:56It's fun. It's fun.
- 32:58But yeah, I just. Yeah.
- 32:59Anyhow, we're not going to hold against them.
- 33:01But the Kinsman's are great. I just think the kinsman's are
- 33:03great. And again, we'll go back to the
- 33:05last episode, the episode before.
- 33:07How has nobody, how has two people finished the grid on
- 33:11North Kinsman and not finished the grid on South Kinsman?
- 33:14I don't understand, but that's what I have to say about the
- 33:18kinsman's and the kinsman's from the other way.
- 33:20Which Kinsman Ridge trail is that the entire trail Elto?
- 33:23What is it three O 2 or whatever?
- 33:26Is that the highway? I don't even know, like Mount
- 33:28Wolf and the the little camp campsite back there for what's
- 33:32called thought my head. That's a nice little trail 2
- 33:35very out out. You know, I did that full, full
- 33:38Kinsman Ridge show on the lodge to dodge.
- 33:40It's it's very much out there, but it's yeah, it's remote
- 33:42feeling. It's it's the AT.
- 33:44So it's got kind of a good vibe to it.
- 33:46The climb up to the Kinsman's from that side is kind of cool,
- 33:49kind of rugged. So yeah, Kinsman's 13 #12 is
- 33:54going to be Tannen right next to the Kinsman's.
- 33:58I think, you know, the feel of it, it just kind of mix ends.
- 34:01This is 1 where you almost could link the cannon with the
- 34:03Kinsman's hike, but I don't think that would be totally,
- 34:07Yeah, totally, you know, accurate, I think leveling all
- 34:11these hikes together. But Canon.
- 34:13Yeah. Another one that I just think is
- 34:14very, very good. Good view.
- 34:17It's a shorter one, but it's kind of like a Tecumseh.
- 34:20It's kind of punchy. You know what you're going to
- 34:22get. You can do it a couple different
- 34:24ways. So you can come from, you know,
- 34:25Lonesome Lake or that direction, the Frank Notch, or you can go
- 34:30kind of the ski slope side up that little windy trail.
- 34:33What is that? The is that I think that is the
- 34:35Kidsman Ridge Trail. It's got the ski slopes, which
- 34:38is always kind of nice. Some people like ski slope
- 34:41views, some people don't. I like it 'cause it kind of
- 34:43mixes it up. You know, you get the slopes
- 34:45right there. The the, the tower at the top
- 34:49almost takes a little bit away from me, a little bit away from
- 34:53it for me. Holy guacamole.
- 34:57I love guac. But you get up there and you get
- 35:01really good views. It kind of puts you above the
- 35:03tree line. It gets it gets you up there and
- 35:05you feel you feel good up there. So canon's a good one.
- 35:09I always enjoy Canon, and it's a good one too.
- 35:12If you do like a little speed trial, like I feel like Canon,
- 35:15hail Tecumseh. It's a good like short uphill
- 35:19effort if you want to give those kind of a good cracks.
- 35:22And then just outside the top 10.
- 35:24So this is where approaching the top ten, the last peaks are
- 35:28going to be the Wildcats. These are ones, again, I think
- 35:32they snuck up. They're really high, really
- 35:34high, but again, I just love the view from Wildcat like the ski
- 35:39area platform, which again, it's a ski area which some people
- 35:43like some people don't like. I kind of like it.
- 35:45I I think it mixed it up and makes it friskier.
- 35:50If it's legally allowed, you can go up and down the ski trails,
- 35:54follow all laws and abide by trail rules or whatever.
- 35:59But yeah, the the platform up there is very nice.
- 36:02The views are awesome on a clear day.
- 36:04I think This is why everyone loves Wildcat, But, and I think
- 36:08it's right there with Canon, you know, similar kind of vibe,
- 36:11Wildcat D, which, yeah, no, a a Wildcat A has the view down to
- 36:17the, the Lakewood and Carter Dome, which is like an awesome
- 36:20view. That little lookout.
- 36:21So I and the Ridge is kind of longer than you would think, but
- 36:24I, I haven't had any horrible experiences there.
- 36:26I wouldn't say horrible. And comparing it to Canon,
- 36:32they're both ski slopes. They're both in the same kind of
- 36:34realm, kind of views, kind of, you know, they got stuff built
- 36:37up there. But I'm edging towards the
- 36:40Wildcats as beating out Canon because you get Washington in
- 36:44your face and it's just a great view.
- 36:47And if you fly down the ski slopes hoping to not get in
- 36:50trouble, I would imagine that that would throw in some fun to
- 36:54the day. But I would imagine, OK, OK, now
- 37:01we're approaching the top 10. Now we're at the top ten, top
- 37:0510, rounding out the top 10 here.
- 37:08We're getting into the good stuff.
- 37:09A lot of people are like, oh, you know, he's missing a lot of
- 37:11peaks or a lot of ranges or so. The we got some top 10 is going
- 37:16to be Pierce and Jackson. I linked those two together.
- 37:20You don't always do them together, but linked them
- 37:22together. I think they're one of the more
- 37:25popular hikes. Obviously they are.
- 37:30They're very, yeah, they're very popular.
- 37:32We're not going to hold against them, but they're very, very
- 37:34good views. They're kind of shorter, one of
- 37:37the first ones that I kind of did.
- 37:39And and I mean, who just doesn't love the presidentials, right?
- 37:43So I linked them both together. So you kind of get 2 for one.
- 37:46Is that unfair? I don't know.
- 37:47Is it fair? I think it's fair whatever
- 37:50Jackson and Pierce lumped in together rounds out the top ten.
- 37:54I think they're my least favorite of some of the ones
- 37:57remaining, obviously, but that's why I have to say about that
- 38:00Jackson more than Pierce, but also they're more technical than
- 38:04you would think. No, I think Jackson is a lot
- 38:06more technical. Jackson is very rocky and very
- 38:09technical. Kind of reminds me of like
- 38:11Osceola's just so many people do it and the trail gets eroded
- 38:17away. But that is the top, the 10 for
- 38:21me #9 da da, da da Kerrigan. Kerrigan got up there, Love
- 38:31Kerrigan. Then on Kerrigan a bunch if
- 38:33people are like all we're doing, Kerrigan.
- 38:35I'm, I'm man, I let go into it. It's got a good view.
- 38:38It's got a tower at the top, which actually I like.
- 38:40I like getting up there and then you get a full view.
- 38:43It's one of the best views in the whites.
- 38:45I love Signal Ridge. It's a good long sustained
- 38:48climb, but not like crazy hard. It's just a good, I just really
- 38:53like it, everything about it. I like that you kind of I don't
- 38:56like the road walk all the time, but I like that when you start
- 38:59the trailhead, you get to a little bit of flat stuff and
- 39:02then you get some good, good terrain and then you climb
- 39:04again. So you get a little bit of time
- 39:06time in different zones. Good views, good hike, good
- 39:10days. Kerrigan #9 makes the top ten
- 39:15shout out Kerrigan 8, Monroe and Eisenhower.
- 39:21So another Prezi pair. I end up pairing these together
- 39:24'cause I had to kind of pair most of the Prezis up.
- 39:27I bundled Monroe and Eisenhower. I really like Lake of the
- 39:31Clouds, the view from down there up to Washington very good above
- 39:35tree line in the Prezis is, is what everybody wants to wants in
- 39:41a, in a good trail run hike. And so that's why most of the
- 39:45Prezis are in there. I think there are some better
- 39:48Prezis, but that's what I'm going to put for #8 for #8 come
- 39:53on phone. Don't die on me like this, OK #7
- 39:58Liberty and Flume. Liberty and Flume.
- 40:01This is one that some people would be like what?
- 40:04How could you? Liberty is one of my favorite
- 40:07views in the whites. And obviously I couldn't just do
- 40:11all Prezi like all like the cookie cutters.
- 40:14Liberty is one of my best view, favorite views in the whites.
- 40:18So This is why it kind of got up there.
- 40:21It's one that I've done more, a lot more than others.
- 40:25It's Frank Ridge, but you don't get the Frank Ridge hoopla,
- 40:28which you aren't supposed to think about the hoopla better
- 40:31that Liberty alone carried. And Flume is awesome too.
- 40:34Like Flume is a good view Anytime you drive up, that's
- 40:37like, oh, that's flume. Hey, see that thing?
- 40:38That's flume, the rock slides. That's Flume, flume slide, good
- 40:42views, start of a penny end of a penny.
- 40:46Flume and Liberty. They they got up there good for
- 40:50them #7 on this list I'm but before I think about it more
- 40:53high, I'm just got to keep rolling #6 Moose a lock.
- 40:57Everybody loves a good moose. A lock.
- 41:00It's a it's a it's an accessible.
- 41:03There's lots of different ways. Beaverbrook, the AT Gorgebrook,
- 41:07it's awesome views above tree line.
- 41:10It's kind of isolated in the southern whites, but you get
- 41:12that above tree line feel so you get some of that Ridge running
- 41:17with the awesome views. I've had lots of good days on
- 41:20moose. I've had a ton of days on moose.
- 41:21Again, one of my most hiked peaks.
- 41:23A lot of people, most most hiked peaks peaks.
- 41:27You get the orange sign. You get wind bleeped when you go
- 41:32up there usually, but it's a good time.
- 41:36Moose Lock comes in at six. Next up we have #5 drum roll.
- 41:43Where is he going with these top five?
- 41:45Where is he going? Is he going here?
- 41:46Is he going there? We got a few left.
- 41:47Which ones are left? Lincoln and Lafayette.
- 41:52Franconia Ridge Loop. It's a classic, timeless
- 41:56classic. Everybody loves that loop.
- 42:00It's very popular. We're not going to hold against
- 42:02it. It's very popular, not going to
- 42:04hold against it. I've had great days.
- 42:06I've done it a bunch. It's the mini Prezi.
- 42:10If you're near Lincoln, like it's that kind of area.
- 42:12It's a little something different.
- 42:14It's good views. It's a tall peek.
- 42:16Franconia Ridge shot. Everybody take the picture.
- 42:19It can never look as good as when someone else takes it, but
- 42:21that's OK. Franconia Ridge Loop.
- 42:24I love going up Old Bridle Path and being in that rage.
- 42:29Like I'm saying, you know, before the Hut.
- 42:30You get some good views out there.
- 42:33It's just a great, it's a great one.
- 42:36Number five people are like, is that low?
- 42:37Is that low? I, I don't know, but that's
- 42:39where I put it at link of Lafayette #4 And again, some of
- 42:44these, I, I can't think about these too long.
- 42:46I went through the list so much and I'm just like move in.
- 42:48And then #4 Jefferson. So northern prezis, obviously
- 42:54northern prezis are amazing. I think Jefferson, I kept it
- 42:58alone. I at first I paired it with
- 43:00Washington, but I thought maybe that didn't do Washington
- 43:02justice. I it's alone.
- 43:06You get good views to Washington right in your face.
- 43:08You get good views to Madison Adams right in your face.
- 43:11Clay, what's up? Hey, yo, I'm a 4000 footer.
- 43:14You're not sorry, Bob. It's just it's it's a great peek
- 43:19kind of isolated. We talked about that.
- 43:20This is one of the most finished grid peak.
- 43:22Did that have anything to do that?
- 43:23I have no idea if that got into my brain during when I'm
- 43:25sleeping and maybe make this pick.
- 43:27I think Jefferson. I haven't been on it like overly
- 43:30a ton handful of times, but it's just a good in the middle of the
- 43:35northern Prezi's peak. Northern Prezi's are awesome.
- 43:38Jefferson is #4 number three, people are thinking, all right,
- 43:44take a second right now at home, at the gym, on a run, driving,
- 43:48wherever you are, there's three left.
- 43:51How is he going to go? How is he going to do this?
- 43:54I think these are all kind of in a sense, no brainers, but who
- 43:58knows, who knows? Everyone's going to leave me
- 43:59your comment, Leave a comment. I people always say like the
- 44:02video, leave a comment, subscribe.
- 44:03I don't know if that helps. So I just stopped saying that in
- 44:07my videos because I have no, I don't know, but leave a comment
- 44:12#3 Washington. Washington, obviously it's the
- 44:22biggest peak. It's the most, it's the biggest
- 44:25attraction. It's an awesome.
- 44:28You're at the tallest point east of the Mississippi other than
- 44:32whatever Mount Mitchell. I don't know what kind of
- 44:35everyone knows Washington. The worst weather you can ski it
- 44:37Tucks. It's awesome.
- 44:41I mean, yeah, going into Tuckerman's or like in around
- 44:45that area on the backside. I honestly haven't spent a ton
- 44:48of time in doing it, but it's just so awesome.
- 44:52There's so many different approaches to Washington, so
- 44:55many different views. It is the big one, Big George.
- 45:00There's, there's lots of people up there.
- 45:01Yes, we're going to even on a weekday, there's lots of people.
- 45:04So that just cut into effect. There's a huge building up
- 45:07there, yes, but it's the observatory.
- 45:09You get weather data, some people like it, some people
- 45:12don't. You can go up the cog, go down
- 45:14the cog. Some people hate the cog, some
- 45:15people don't. It's the middle.
- 45:17It's the biggest Washington #3 could have been number one,
- 45:23could have been number one, could have been #2 but it was #3
- 45:25for me. I mean, what?
- 45:26Like I said, I think another reason too, I like views with
- 45:30peaks above me are ridges above me.
- 45:32So like the view from Washington is, is awesome, but it's almost
- 45:35like I kind of want another, you know #3 Washington #2 and me
- 45:41announcing #2 is also just announcing #1 drum roll, please.
- 45:46Madison and Adams, the northern prezis, I guess don't think
- 45:50about too much. Andrew 2-3 and four sweep, which
- 45:54is kind of like, I guess it makes sense that I put them all
- 45:56together. Northern prezis.
- 45:58The northern Prezis are awesome. It's rugged up there, the best
- 46:02views, the mountains are the grandest up there.
- 46:05It's good technical trail running.
- 46:07You get some smooth stuff. Everything's above the trees.
- 46:10I can't see a tree right now. It's awesome.
- 46:13It's can be windy, which put some frisk in it.
- 46:16Prezi traverse Hut, Traverse lodge to dodge whites 100.
- 46:20Everything goes through the prezis.
- 46:23Northern Prezis came through and swept 2 to 4 and now people are
- 46:27thinking what? Wait what?
- 46:29What is number one? My favorite peaks ranking the
- 46:32number 14000 footers. My favorite hike.
- 46:36Favorite peaks to be on Da da da, the bonds.
- 46:41Bond Clift, A blonde clift. Oh my God, did I just I guys, I
- 46:46blew it. I blew it.
- 46:48How did I blow it? Bond Cliff.
- 46:50It's cold. Bond Cliff is my favorite peak.
- 46:55The Ridge kind of from Bond to Bond Cliff is my favorite
- 46:58section of trail. You're in the Ridge, Bond, Bond
- 47:02Cliff to Bond to to West Bond and back is just amazing.
- 47:07It's hard to get out there. Yes.
- 47:09We were not trying to have any bias there.
- 47:11It is the best use. You're in the middle of the
- 47:13penny. Is it the Prezi's?
- 47:15No, but you're in the middle of the penny.
- 47:17You're king of the penny or not The you're in the middle.
- 47:20You see everything. It's awesome.
- 47:21I've had great days out there. Pemi loop, bonds, Bond Cliff.
- 47:26Why are these people hand standing on Bond Cliff?
- 47:29Shout out Riley Mcgurn, shout out Jason Beupre.
- 47:33I don't know how it's that. It's that same.
- 47:36Yeah. Shout out everything about bond
- 47:39Cliff, the bonds. How has no one finished the grid
- 47:41on bond? Maybe I should be the first
- 47:43person. Can I even finish it in time?
- 47:45Will somebody race me to this? I first person to finish my grid
- 47:49on bond. I can make that happen.
- 47:52If I start planning right now, I can make that happen.
- 47:55The bonds are the best. I think a lot of people have
- 47:57this have this notion as well, but it's they're just hard to
- 48:00get to. But that is how I'm going to end
- 48:03this list with the bonds being the king.
- 48:06Like I said, one through 5 bonds, Madison, Adams,
- 48:10Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Lafayette, no surprises.
- 48:14Lots of good peaks, lots of good views above the trees.
- 48:18I mean, lots of trails in the trees, all kind of look the
- 48:21same. Like no offense to peak 6
- 48:23through 30, but our hikes 6 through 30.
- 48:26But those are the best. Those are my favorite.
- 48:29I like getting out. We're not holding crowds against
- 48:31anybody. Those are my favorite.
- 48:33That was the 4000 footer list. It would be actually nice.
- 48:37Maybe on my Instagram post I will put in the list.
- 48:40And then if you are dedicated, this actually took me a little
- 48:44bit. So no pressure.
- 48:45It's going to take a little time out of your day.
- 48:47Drop your list. And we just have lots of lists
- 48:50in the comments. I don't know if you will do
- 48:52that, but yeah. And that's my list.
- 48:55That's what I like the the peaks on.
- 48:56I'm not going to overthink this and and lose sleep over how I
- 49:00rank some of these peaks. Are there some things that I
- 49:02wish I took back? No, never.
- 49:04I stand on ground, stand on truth.
- 49:06That's my list. Ranking the 4000 footers.
- 49:10There it is. There you have it.
- 49:12It's freezing cold. Do I, do I have time?
- 49:14Do I have battery to do the second piece of this podcast?
- 49:26Yeah, I think I do have battery, but I have freezing cold.
- 49:28How, how, how far are we right now?
- 49:3155 minutes. Holy smokes.
- 49:33OK. But I did have some good
- 49:34outtakes in this. All right?
- 49:35We're going to keep this ball rolling and we're going to do
- 49:37our previews. We're going to do the previews.
- 49:41I'll get through this. I can do this.
- 49:42We're going to do the previews, OK?
- 49:45We're going to preview 3 races. Like I said, three races going
- 49:50on next weekend. These are all big previews and
- 49:52these are all big races. Very exciting.
- 49:54The first race last year standing.
- 49:58This is a backyard style every hour on the hour event held on
- 50:03Black Mountain in Rumford, ME by the White Mountain Ski Company.
- 50:08I'm not going to say ski the Whites, but White Mountain Ski
- 50:11Company. This is the 7th year that it was
- 50:14held, the 7th edition of this and I think it's grown.
- 50:17It's kind of like the winter version of Bubba's.
- 50:20Lots of participants, lots of coverage on the laps and some of
- 50:25these races have gone on for days.
- 50:27So it's an exciting race. Each lap is a little over a mile
- 50:33up and down, obviously. And then and then 1200 feet of
- 50:37climbing per per lap. And the course records. 2024
- 50:43Justin Lagasse, 76 hours on this course, 85,000 feet of gain and
- 50:51a lot of the yeah, female course record.
- 50:54Natalie Nichols, 38 hours last year in 2020, five, 42,000 feet,
- 51:00a gain. So a lot of these races, a lot
- 51:03of these runs, they're going into the days one 2-3 days out
- 51:08there running OK. We we OK, we restarted
- 51:12everything just to make sure we saved what we did have.
- 51:14OK. So I went through the course
- 51:16records. So again, like the male, the
- 51:18men, the top ten men's times or, or efforts 767573717060606060
- 51:26something, the woman's 30, all in the 30s.
- 51:30So this event goes on for a long time.
- 51:32A lot of sluggers have come out. A lot of a lot of people have
- 51:34done this event. So it's a it's a, it's a
- 51:37grueling event. So here are my thoughts on it.
- 51:41I think First off, 90% of people in this race don't want to win.
- 51:46I don't think this is a race that you want to win for, for a
- 51:50lot of people because what does that mean?
- 51:52That means you're out in the freezing cold, skiing for three
- 51:56or four days, taking vacation, your crew, you wipe a a week out
- 52:00of your calendar. I think most people are not in
- 52:03it to win. They're in it for a good time.
- 52:05We'll we'll go for 10121524 hours and then they're out.
- 52:09This is a hard race to want to win.
- 52:11It's like Bubba's, it's like the escutney race.
- 52:16So I think a scutney has raised the bar for this kind of event.
- 52:20And so the escutney, for people that don't know, is that a
- 52:25vertical backyard events that went on for 90 hours, 108,000
- 52:30feet a game. Shout out Connor Brown, shout
- 52:32out Bill Tidd. And this is a similar style.
- 52:36The escutney was on foot though, and the skiing is on skis.
- 52:39So until a Scutney, the skiing event always went longer.
- 52:45And I think the biggest thing you think is like, all right,
- 52:47well, they're working on the way up, but then they can ski down.
- 52:51So it's easier on your muscles, which I think is true.
- 52:54But I think a Scutney busted that 70, that three day mark and
- 53:00said we don't need skis on the way down.
- 53:02We're going to run, slash, walk down and we're going to keep all
- 53:06on foot. We're going to keep doing it.
- 53:07So I think a Scutney raised the bar and I think we're probably
- 53:12going to get course records for men and female this year because
- 53:16of seeing people go like, all right, if you can do 90 hours,
- 53:19they did 90 hours on feet. We got to get closer on skis.
- 53:22But again, it's a that's a three or four day commitment.
- 53:25How many people are willing to go that far?
- 53:27Who knows, But I'm sure there are a handful of people that are
- 53:32really competing to win. So we'll go through some of the
- 53:34names quick. First up, Brody Levin.
- 53:38He won in 2022 with 65 laps. He signed up.
- 53:43He hasn't been since. Who knows how many laps he would
- 53:46have done because if you win, that's like 8, you just do one
- 53:48more. You have no one to compete with
- 53:50you. So he could have kept going.
- 53:53So I think he is one of the top contenders.
- 53:58What was that? Next up, Brent Underkoffler.
- 54:03He goes out every year, has a great go at it and but he
- 54:09cannot. He has not won it.
- 54:11In 2024 he came in fourth 41 laps, 2023 came in second 62
- 54:16laps and then 2024 he goes and does 73 laps.
- 54:20Is that right? And it's like this, this surely
- 54:22should win should win it for me. My third year going, he comes in
- 54:263rd. So he's back.
- 54:28He took a year off last year. So maybe he was like, I need a
- 54:30rest. He's hopefully back for a
- 54:32vengeance. My money might be on him, but
- 54:34we'll we'll go through this list might be on him if he wants it.
- 54:40Next up, force Ledger. He put up 67 laps last year for
- 54:443rd. So he didn't win last year, but
- 54:46he put up a 67 laps. Very impressive.
- 54:48So force is back. Matt Schorney last year he did
- 54:5526 laps and Matt Schorney, I think we talked about in the
- 54:59Pemi Loup super fit. He came I think 15th in the EU
- 55:04the the Sunnupee scramble this year, which is crazy.
- 55:09He's super fast, super fit. Anytime you get somebody super
- 55:12fit in one of these races, even if they haven't done a ton of
- 55:16long distance multi day things, they're just probably working
- 55:20less hard than a lot of people. And so if they have a good day
- 55:22or they really want it, they can go forever.
- 55:24So watch out. Matt Torney's in this.
- 55:27I'm going to mess this name up. I'm so bad with names.
- 55:31Ilana Jesse, she won IN202437 laps.
- 55:38That's the only time she showed up.
- 55:40So she's won this, she's not the course record, but she's won
- 55:44this. The second most laps done and
- 55:46she's back again for another. Got it.
- 55:48So she's one to watch out for. Hilary McCoy in the women's
- 55:51race, one in 202336 laps, third in 2024, so came back and didn't
- 55:58repeat, but she got 30 laps. 2 people that have both won the
- 56:01event in 2023-2024. That's going to be a good
- 56:04showdown. Another name Steven Lyric, he's
- 56:08all over the place. He's always doing crazy events.
- 56:11He's got a ton of ultras. I ran Jigger Johnson 100 with
- 56:14him. Shout out he signed up for
- 56:16Hellbender 2026. I saw an ultra sign up shout out
- 56:19the last two years been in the 30s.
- 56:21He's done this event four times. Watch out he he has a deep well.
- 56:26Austin Black is in it this year. He's done it twice, both around
- 56:3024 hours, but he set the unsupported whites 100 this
- 56:34year, one of the best FK TS of the year I talked about.
- 56:37So he maybe he's got that that whites 100 swagger.
- 56:42He just entered a new realm of pushing the limits.
- 56:46He could be a contender, although I looked at the Nordics
- 56:49last Nordic skier standing and he's in that right now.
- 56:52So I was like, ah, what is his plan?
- 56:54Is he just trying to do both? He's trying to win one.
- 56:56He's just trying to win them both.
- 56:57That imagine that Austin Black sweeps on the that would be
- 57:00crazy. In a single week.
- 57:02He's in the events. Another one, Zach McCarthy, this
- 57:07is his first race on ultrasound up since 2023.
- 57:11He is the second fastest time on the Kilkeny Ridge race.
- 57:15He had a he had a few good rips a few years ago on some of the
- 57:17races. He hasn't raced since.
- 57:19I don't know what he's been up to, I guess in totality, but he
- 57:26does the inclusive ski touring and we'll see how he does this
- 57:30year, see how long he he goes out there for.
- 57:32Another contender, Jesse Ears, a man, he did 28 last year, did
- 57:38butts. He did 28 laps last year, but he
- 57:41did 31,000 feet on a Scutney, which I think if you just go to
- 57:45a Scutney, there's a little Scutney boost this year.
- 57:48So maybe he's got that Scutney swagger.
- 57:50He's going to come in and be like we and I just did this.
- 57:53We just went for so long. I'm coming back.
- 57:56I'm going to contend another one.
- 57:59David Chorny, I think brother to Matt Chorny, fast in the DNA.
- 58:04He's done this event four times, all around 24 hours.
- 58:08Kyle Houston, he's done it twice, 30 hours and then 40
- 58:13hours and he's he, he's on Strava, I think with a big like
- 58:17sparkly hat. And his location is Nunya
- 58:20Business, New Hampshire. And that always makes me
- 58:22chuckle. So we threw him in here.
- 58:24Angus King, the third from Portland, ME.
- 58:28No results on ultra sign up or for this race, but awesome name.
- 58:32So we shout out Angus King, the third, Patrick Kantley Henner
- 58:41from Montpelier, Vt. He's done it every year.
- 58:44He's the only person that's done it six times, the only person
- 58:47that signed up. Again, shout out.
- 58:50I think he's usually maybe around, I don't know, his
- 58:53results maybe in the teens. But Patrick from Vermont, he
- 58:57comes out, he just loves it. He does it every year.
- 58:59He's done it 6 times. Shout out.
- 59:00Vermont also shout out and then 30 people on on ultra sign up
- 59:07have no results right now, which I always think that more number
- 59:12of people on an ultra sign up page with no results means that
- 59:15there's probably a few cats in there that you don't know about
- 59:18yet that can throw down. You just don't know about them
- 59:22yet. So it's always exciting to see a
- 59:25ton of no results people on the list.
- 59:28If you're in a race, you're like, I don't know anything
- 59:29about these people, like, you know, do I should I be racing
- 59:32these people? So maybe who knows, maybe it'll
- 59:36be some people will surprise us, but we'll see.
- 59:40So All in all, it's going to be a good event to follow.
- 59:43I tried to cover some of the names.
- 59:44I try, I'm going to try to do my research preview on these events
- 59:47and stuff. So if I missed your name, I
- 59:49apologize. If you're if you're a slugger,
- 59:51if you think you are a slugger, you're going to come out, show,
- 59:54prove me wrong, get on the list again in the podium.
- 59:58I'll definitely talk about it. But that was the, that was the
- 1:00:03preview. For the last year standing and
- 1:00:07now we're going to do the Tarctic.
- 1:00:09Yeah, Tarctic Frozen Yeti preview.
- 1:00:14I talked about this. I volunteered here.
- 1:00:16It's at the Hale Reservation in Westwood, MA, held by TARC.
- 1:00:21Also the 7th year, which I was like, what?
- 1:00:23They both started the same year. Both started the same year.
- 1:00:26It's the 7th year holding the event.
- 1:00:27It's another brutal middle of the winter cold event.
- 1:00:31I went the coldest year on record, which I think it was
- 1:00:34like -20 temps in 2023. That's the year I volunteered at
- 1:00:38at it. And it's crazy.
- 1:00:40I mean, it's just a 30 hour event.
- 1:00:42A lot of it's at night because in the winter, lots of dark cold
- 1:00:47and there's a nice warm, welcoming hot food, having
- 1:00:53people laughing, having building that you do loops and then you
- 1:00:57come back to. So a lot of people get into that
- 1:01:00thing and like, I'm not going back outside.
- 1:01:02I'm done. So it adds a little bit of a, a
- 1:01:05good element to it, like lots of times to drop if you're just
- 1:01:08being feeling cold. But there are a few savages at
- 1:01:11that race that will go out for the 30 hours and no run and
- 1:01:14they'll come in at the end after running all night, all all
- 1:01:16morning, freezing cold and be like, do I have time for one
- 1:01:19more lap? Those people shout out, we'll
- 1:01:23see. And there's three different
- 1:01:24loops that you can run on that route.
- 1:01:26So you kind of mix it up. I don't know how the tracking
- 1:01:28works, but I'm sure it works. And then if you run a 100 miles,
- 1:01:33you get a Yeti buckle. So shout out any buckle's a good
- 1:01:36buckle, shout out the Yeti buckle.
- 1:01:38And then there's also a 15 mile event for this.
- 1:01:41So, so there's with the tart, there's lots of different
- 1:01:43distances. I feel like at some of the races
- 1:01:45this is a 15 mile event, a night time run starting at 8:00 PM.
- 1:01:50So those are the races we'll do the course records, the 15 mile,
- 1:01:55the male course record 150 Patrick Karen.
- 1:01:59I mean he does he have all the tart course records.
- 1:02:01Is that can we can we check that?
- 1:02:05The female 15 mile is 2 hours 41 minutes Ruth Nordoff and the 50
- 1:02:13mile non binary record 330 Audrey Drake, 30 hours.
- 1:02:20The male record 115 miles. So obviously it's time.
- 1:02:24So I think it goes by miles, but 115 miles, 29 hours 6 minutes.
- 1:02:29Matt Rogers last year 2025 shout out.
- 1:02:33I think I ran Trigger Johnson with him.
- 1:02:34At least I met him. Talk to him.
- 1:02:35Shout out. Matt Rogers course record and
- 1:02:39then 30 hour female record is 105 miles in 28 hours 3 minutes
- 1:02:44by Laura Rickey and then the 30 hour non binary record 65 hours
- 1:02:5320 holy smokes 65 miles 28 hours 20 minutes live Colombo.
- 1:02:59So those are the races. Those are the course records.
- 1:03:01Who's in it. This events entrance list is not
- 1:03:05on ultra sign up so it's hard less to compare what people have
- 1:03:08done. I didn't look up anyone
- 1:03:09individually. There's no rankings.
- 1:03:11I'm going to miss most people. And again, like I said, I am
- 1:03:16like they're when I do these previews or after the race, I'm
- 1:03:19probably going to miss some people and they're like, Oh, I
- 1:03:20wish you'd talked about like 1, go out there and, and do good
- 1:03:24and I will definitely talk about it.
- 1:03:25And two, I don't follow. I I follow out of the races, but
- 1:03:29for a long time I haven't been on social media.
- 1:03:31So I don't really know, maybe people from social media or, or
- 1:03:36whatever. I usually would just Google
- 1:03:39results and races that I was interested in.
- 1:03:41And so hopefully overdoing these previews from the year, I start
- 1:03:44to recognize some of these names and we can give more shout outs,
- 1:03:48congratulations kind of thing. But for now, we'll just do a
- 1:03:52quick preview. A few of the names that I know.
- 1:03:54Matt Carbone, he does tons of the races.
- 1:03:57He's an OG Jigger Johnson inaugural 50 mile runner.
- 1:04:01He's a crusher, always doing big miles.
- 1:04:03So he's in the race. Nick and Jackie Fusile, Chris
- 1:04:07Man, man's wearing shout out. Those are the White Mountain
- 1:04:10endurance crew. They all crush.
- 1:04:13They do so many ultras. Always good good chat with them.
- 1:04:16Good seeing them so shout out. Hopefully they bundle up.
- 1:04:22Matt Pacheco. He's really fast.
- 1:04:24When I saw his nails, like I know that name.
- 1:04:26Matt Pacheco, I looked at his Ulster sign up.
- 1:04:29He's fast, straight savage. Last year he won the Tark winter
- 1:04:3340. Miller and his 2025 look like
- 1:04:36win, win, win, win, win. He's I think he's 40 ish.
- 1:04:43No, nothing he gets, but he's he gives me Justin Kowski vibes
- 1:04:46like he's just kicking everyone's butt.
- 1:04:48Take a name. Shut up South Hadley.
- 1:04:50Shut up Bapshi. Jonathan Western.
- 1:04:54He ran one of the other Tark ones.
- 1:04:55Is he going for a Tark sweep? He's really fast.
- 1:05:00So he's definitely a contender. And then I go and check the wait
- 1:05:03list for the 30. Wait, yeah, for the 30 hour and
- 1:05:06Roy Van Cleef is on there. Who?
- 1:05:09I know his name. I think Manchester Monadnock
- 1:05:11maybe course record a good, good race.
- 1:05:13I know his name Crusher Stud. And then Leila Codgeroth is on
- 1:05:17the wait list and I haven't in all caps Stud.
- 1:05:22She's a beast, obviously. Go look at her, her her list.
- 1:05:26She does crazy miles. Usually the wait list for these
- 1:05:30races get on the the the the race.
- 1:05:33So hopefully they get in it and it is just a throw down out
- 1:05:37there in the cold and then Patrick Karen is the only person
- 1:05:41in the 50 mile. Duh.
- 1:05:44Last up, we're not going to do a full preview here, but this is
- 1:05:48just another race. I want to talk about the Frozen
- 1:05:50Heart 900. It's in Rock Fall, Connecticut
- 1:05:53held by the CT trail mixers. It's also also the 7th year this
- 1:05:58race is happening. What is going on all it was like
- 1:06:017 years ago like a really bad winter and everyone's like I
- 1:06:03want to start a winter race. I don't know but it is a self
- 1:06:07supported fat ass style. No aid station, no Pacers show
- 1:06:12up and run 2.2 mile loops. No fee.
- 1:06:15But it's actually recommended to donate $20.00 to the
- 1:06:19conservation, Who, who, whatever takes care of the trails.
- 1:06:22So cool that there's no fee. Double cool that a lot of people
- 1:06:25probably donate. That's a race going on next
- 1:06:28weekend. And then the last Nordic skier
- 1:06:31standing, I looked, there are 38 people who did the race.
- 1:06:36Two people have DNF so far. And I think that the the names
- 1:06:40that I knew, Erika Notini, who's a crusher, and then Austin
- 1:06:43Black, like I talked about is in that race.
- 1:06:46Maybe we'll throw the results of that race in at the end of the
- 1:06:48episode, but that is all I got for you today.
- 1:06:53Honestly, this one was I am freezing my butt off out of
- 1:06:55here. This was a tough one, but
- 1:06:58hopefully it all came out good. Yeah, I'm excited to start like
- 1:07:02covering these races, hopefully to have people on and talk about
- 1:07:05it. And yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:08So it's a, it's a, it's a big, it's a busy couple weekends.
- 1:07:11Keep your eyes out for these races and we will kind of report
- 1:07:16back on everything next week or after the races conclude.
- 1:07:21So that's all I got today. Yeah, I think that's all I got
- 1:07:24today. Stay warm out there.
- 1:07:27And Joslyn had told me like, yeah, you said stay warm, but
- 1:07:29but everyone kind of is going to listen to listen to the podcast
- 1:07:33after it was wicked cold. And I was like, yeah, that's a
- 1:07:35good point. I don't know why I said that.
- 1:07:36But again, I just said it. Stay warm.
- 1:07:38Stay warm this winter. We're going to get through it.
- 1:07:41Those are the races. Those are my 4000 footers.
- 1:07:44That's all I got for you this week.
- 1:07:46We'll see you next time. Peace.
- 1:07:49All right, we're going to wrap this podcast up with the Last
- 1:07:53Nordic Skier standing results and a trip report.
- 1:08:00I just did Pearce and Eisenhower, so I'll do
- 1:08:03conditions and what happened out there to end this off.
- 1:08:08So the last Nordic Skier standing, it ended up going 21
- 1:08:12hours. Peter Phelan wins it.
- 1:08:16The first finisher of the event. I think this is the first year
- 1:08:20they had this event. So I believe he's the first
- 1:08:22finisher and he beats out Eli Grossman with the assist.
- 1:08:27Eli did 20 hours for the Nordics gear and I was looking at the
- 1:08:32the videos. The videos are pretty funny at
- 1:08:35the last couple laps. I mean, this, I don't know the
- 1:08:38exact temps up there, but it definitely was in the negatives
- 1:08:42overnight and it it was freezing for this event.
- 1:08:46And the photos of the videos that ski the Whites was White
- 1:08:51Mountain Ski company was posting was just eyelash icicles, hair
- 1:08:56icicles, icicles everywhere. It just looked like a frozen
- 1:09:00event and it was kind of making me think, so obviously this
- 1:09:05event lasts a lot shorter than the last skier standing
- 1:09:09typically does. I would have to imagine that's
- 1:09:13because I mean they're kind of working the whole time.
- 1:09:17I think the laps were like a little over 5 miles, about 5
- 1:09:21miles. So it's you know, the last year
- 1:09:23standing you you're working on the way up, but then you get to
- 1:09:25ski down, kind of take a break. So I think you're probably
- 1:09:29working for longer. And then I mean, I think the
- 1:09:32cold really it did a number out there like if if it's that cold
- 1:09:38for a last year standing, I don't know what the the previous
- 1:09:41years have been for the last year standing, how cold is it's
- 1:09:44gotten? But if it's that cold, I mean it
- 1:09:46throws in complications. It's can suck your will very
- 1:09:52quickly. So and now I was kind of
- 1:09:55thinking about it. I think the last year standing
- 1:09:58stuff probably takes a little bit more willpower than like
- 1:10:04physical power just because it's so cold out, because in these
- 1:10:09ultras when you get tired and you get cold, it's so easy to
- 1:10:14want to quit. I mean, you just slow right down
- 1:10:17a warm ramen, a warm, some warm soup, a warm building that you
- 1:10:22go in for an aid station stop. It is just so easy to drop.
- 1:10:26So I really think you need that willpower to keep wanting to go
- 1:10:30out in the freezing cold. And when it's that cold out, I,
- 1:10:34I think, you know, even just like hiking, you sometimes it
- 1:10:39can be really cold and you, you kind of like your brain freezes
- 1:10:43a little bit. Like I don't know how to explain
- 1:10:45it, but sometimes your your thoughts just move a little bit
- 1:10:49slower and you can't like think as fast if it's like really,
- 1:10:52really cold out. And that's kind of what happens
- 1:10:54in ultras anyway. So I think those factors play a
- 1:10:57big part in it. So anyway, cool event, the last
- 1:11:01Nordic skier standing. Shout out Peter.
- 1:11:04He wins it this year and and that's a wrap on that.
- 1:11:08And then my trip report from today, I did Pierce and
- 1:11:14Eisenhower from Crawford Notch. It snowed a bunch.
- 1:11:18We had the huge snowstorm last week.
- 1:11:21It was really cold this week. So I don't think a ton of people
- 1:11:24have gotten out on the trail. And the trip reports were kind
- 1:11:29of that I was looking at before I went.
- 1:11:31We're kind of saying definitely bring snowshoes.
- 1:11:34The trail is pretty soft out there, so I didn't even bring
- 1:11:38spikes. I just put my snowshoes on at
- 1:11:40the beginning. The trail up to Pierce it was,
- 1:11:44there were tons of people in front of me when I started this
- 1:11:46morning. I started pretty late and it was
- 1:11:49very packed down, but it was so super loose and super
- 1:11:54unconsolidated. So like there must have been 100
- 1:11:58people in front of me. It felt like maybe 50, but a ton
- 1:12:02of people had stomped it out and it was still really soft.
- 1:12:04So snowshoes were definitely faster than Spike's today.
- 1:12:08I think by tomorrow, just because of how many people
- 1:12:12actually went on it today with snowshoes, like there were so
- 1:12:15many groups, tons of people. It's a very popular hike.
- 1:12:18I think tomorrow Spikes will probably be close to as good as
- 1:12:23snowshoes up to Pierce. Like they're probably it's going
- 1:12:27to be a little bit loose still, but you you don't have to bring
- 1:12:30the extra weight. So it's probably about the same
- 1:12:32tomorrow. So it's kind of a pick em.
- 1:12:34But then from Pierce to Eisenhower, again, there was a
- 1:12:39lot of people in front of me. Actually there was definitely
- 1:12:42maybe you know, 56710 groups or people in front of me that that
- 1:12:49went to Eisenhower. So it was it was all broken out,
- 1:12:52but it was very, very soft. I was posting only a couple
- 1:12:55times, you know, running with just my snowshoes.
- 1:12:59So you kind of I got to slow down and really just power hike
- 1:13:01that section. Pretty spruce, trappy post holy.
- 1:13:07So definitely need snowshoes on Pierce to Eisenhower.
- 1:13:10Even if you go tomorrow you will definitely need snowshoes on
- 1:13:13that section. But the conditions were today
- 1:13:16today were beautiful. It felt like above tree line.
- 1:13:20There were some clouds and a little bit of wind down low.
- 1:13:23So it was pretty cold. Like I think it started off at
- 1:13:264° this morning at the base. Real real temperature.
- 1:13:31But as I got up higher and into the sun, once the sun was out,
- 1:13:35it was like gorgeous. And there was no clouds up top.
- 1:13:39It was Bluebird stunner. And yeah, it was really, really
- 1:13:43good conditions out there. So a very nice day to get out
- 1:13:46and there were a ton of people out there enjoying it.
- 1:13:48And I am going up the, the mountain 30 minutes and I, yeah,
- 1:13:5530 minutes and I start at 10 and I passed maybe a few people and
- 1:14:01I don't know, I have like the same whenever I pass people, I'd
- 1:14:04just say, hey, you know, hello or whatever.
- 1:14:06I say something like when I'm in a decent distance away.
- 1:14:08So I try not to scare him. And so I'm passing this group
- 1:14:11and guy turns around. It's my uncle who lives in
- 1:14:15Boston. And I'm like, what the heck.
- 1:14:18And then it's my uncle, my aunt and my mother that I ran into
- 1:14:22randomly 30 minutes into the hike.
- 1:14:25And I was like, what is going on?
- 1:14:27No way. So they were out.
- 1:14:30We just did the same hike today. They were doing Pierce and so
- 1:14:34that was cool to see them. It was very, very cold.
- 1:14:38So I kind of I, you know, I stopped talk to them when I pass
- 1:14:41and then when I was coming back down, but kind of had to keep
- 1:14:44moving. And I run into my mom a fair
- 1:14:48amount in the mountains. Like it's not the craziest thing
- 1:14:50in the world 'cause we're both always kind of out and about and
- 1:14:53we don't typically kind of share what we're doing a lot of the
- 1:14:55time. So it is always a surprise, but
- 1:15:00my aunt and my uncle both live like near Boston so to see them
- 1:15:05randomly and start within 1/2 hour each other for for the same
- 1:15:09hike was very cool. And just I, I don't know, it's
- 1:15:13like, you know, small world I guess.
- 1:15:15In the winter, I feel like people run into each other more
- 1:15:20because only a certain amount of trails are actually packed out,
- 1:15:23but still kind of crazy timing. So it's cool to see them.
- 1:15:27And there was a ton of people out.
- 1:15:28Like I said, I saw a couple other kind of old friends on the
- 1:15:32trail, which is cool. And so stop talking to them
- 1:15:36quick. And and yeah, All in all, it's a
- 1:15:39good day out. So that was the trip report.
- 1:15:44That was the last Nordic skier standing.
- 1:15:47I don't know where this is going to go into the episode, probably
- 1:15:50at the end, but who knows. But anyway, that's all I got.
- 1:15:57See you next time. Who's?
