- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now when you're ready, Let's dive into God's Word together
- 0:44in Mark chapter 8, right after Peter's confession of Jesus.
- 0:47As the Christ Jesus plainly tells his disciples what the
- 0:50future holds for him, verse 31 says, And he began to teach them
- 0:54that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by
- 0:57the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed.
- 1:01And after three days rise again. Peter, fresh off his clear and
- 1:05bold proclamation of Jesus identity, pulled his rabbi aside
- 1:09and began to rebuke him. He did not like hearing Jesus
- 1:12talk so grimly about himself. He didn't want the reality that
- 1:15Jesus had laid out about his rejection and death to be true.
- 1:19Listen to how Jesus responds to Peter's rebuke, verse 33 says.
- 1:23But turning around and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter
- 1:27and said, get behind me, Satan, for you're not setting your mind
- 1:30on God's interests, but man's. See, Peter had his priorities
- 1:33wrong. He was not willing in that
- 1:35moment to accept that God's plan could include the brutal
- 1:38rejection and death of Jesus. That wasn't the way he imagined
- 1:42it happening. That wasn't the way he wanted it
- 1:44to happen. What Jesus teaches the crowd
- 1:47next gives us a look into the deeper truth at work here that
- 1:50Peter probably later rather than sooner, would have to learn.
- 1:54Listen to verses 34 and 35. And he summoned the crowd with
- 1:58his disciples and said to them, If anyone wishes to come after
- 2:01me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
- 2:05For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever
- 2:08loses his life for my sake and the Gospels will save it.
- 2:11The way of obedience to Christ is the way of death.
- 2:15God's path for Christ's disciples, both then and now, is
- 2:19not, from an earthly perspective, a path upward to
- 2:22glory. Rather, the path of obedience to
- 2:24Jesus is to follow Jesus down, down, down.
- 2:29Death to self is what is required, but eternal life is
- 2:32what is promised to all who would follow after Jesus.
- 2:35So here's the question, Whose interests are you setting your
- 2:39mind on? God's interests or man's?
- 2:43God's interests are often more difficult, more painful, more
- 2:46messy. But God's interests are always,
- 2:49always, always better. Peter didn't realize in that
- 2:53moment that apart from Jesus being rejected, killed, and
- 2:55raised, they were following him for nothing.
- 2:58This was the plan from the beginning.
- 3:00This was why he came. But Peter couldn't fathom a plan
- 3:03as big as God's was. And rarely can we fathom what
- 3:07the God who is able to do far more than we can ask or imagine
- 3:10is up to. But we must commit to trust Him.
- 3:14Trust that He's in control. Trust that His ways are best.
- 3:18Trust that He knows what he's doing.
- 3:21So set your mind on God's interests, not man's, and
- 3:25prepare to have your mind blown by what the God of the universe
- 3:28will do.
