- 0:00Welcome to Good News on Catholic Spirit Radio, a program for teens and almost
- 0:04teens to better understand that the gospel of Jesus Christ is relevant in their
- 0:08lives, and it's a place where your questions about faith and religion can be answered.
- 0:13And now, here's your host, Deacon Al.
- 0:17Good evening, and welcome to Good News. I am Deacon Al Lundy,
- 0:21permanent deacon here in the Peoria Diocese, welcoming you to Catholic Spirit
- 0:25Radio. Hopefully, you're a regular listener.
- 0:28Catholic Spirit Radio is on the air 24 hours a day, seven days a week,
- 0:31bringing you terrific Catholic programming and this show as well.
- 0:35So we try and cover all the bases.
- 0:38If you'd like to be part of Good News, have a question about Catholicism or
- 0:42Christianity in general, you're welcome to write us at goodnews at catholicspiritradio.com
- 0:47on your email, and we will be glad to take your question on the air.
- 0:52A question that I've been getting a lot lately since we have coming up on this
- 0:56coming Friday is the assumption of the Virgin Mary.
- 1:01And a lot of people seem curious as to, was she assumed alive or had she died and was then assumed?
- 1:09And my thought about that is, who cares? I don't see what difference it makes.
- 1:15Assumed into heaven is assumed into heaven. It's a good thing.
- 1:18And it doesn't happen to everybody. It's happened to a couple of people in Scripture.
- 1:23Mary's event is not in Scripture. We have it through the oral traditions of the church.
- 1:29This is what has been told down the ages from the apostles who were present on down to us.
- 1:36But again, I keep falling back to, does it really matter?
- 1:40And if you're just curious about it, the church really has no stand.
- 1:44The church doesn't say, yes, it was assumed after she died or she was assumed
- 1:49before she died. The church makes no decision on that because we don't have
- 1:54any concrete evidence other than the oral tradition.
- 1:58So it's left to each person to decide for themselves, and there's no real right or wrong.
- 2:02The church just expects you to think about it with intellect,
- 2:07intelligence, and with love.
- 2:09What would be, if God is love, what would be the kindest thing to do?
- 2:14But also from an intellect standpoint, what makes sense liturgically and scripturally
- 2:19as to the state of Mary when she was assumed? And my opinion is she was alive.
- 2:24Now, that doesn't mean she was up and moving around and fully healthy,
- 2:30but it means that she was alive at the time.
- 2:33And the reason I say this is what causes death? Sin.
- 2:39Death is the result of sin. Adam and Eve were meant to live forever.
- 2:44They had what was called the preternatural gifts, and among those was immortality.
- 2:49And they had that because when God created them, they were filled with grace.
- 2:54They already had at their creation the salvific graces from God.
- 3:02So, if they were meant to be immortal because they had no sin,
- 3:08well, then wasn't Mary immortal because she was created with no sin.
- 3:14She was just created differently, not from the soil, but from human parents.
- 3:18But if God can create someone without sin, and we believe that Mary was created
- 3:24without sin, there'd be no reason or no cause for her death.
- 3:29So, my opinion is, if the church is right, and I believe they are,
- 3:34about Mary being sinless, then it would make sense that she was assumed without the cause of death.
- 3:42So, that's where I stand on it. You might have a different opinion.
- 3:46That's okay, as long as you believe that she was assumed into heaven, body and soul.
- 3:50No remains were left behind, which would make sense because if she died sinless.
- 3:57Her body would not corrupt.
- 3:59Well, if her body didn't corrupt, certainly chances are good it could have been
- 4:02found by now, but they find no such marker, no such evidence.
- 4:08So I'm going with the fact that Mary had the same preternatural gifts given
- 4:14to Adam and Eve at their creation, which they lost and lost for us once they sinned.
- 4:20But Mary, we have no evidence of Mary ever sinning.
- 4:22There's nothing in Scripture that says Mary ever sinned.
- 4:26She shows other signs of the other preternatural gifts, such as a full knowledge
- 4:32of God. Mary certainly had that.
- 4:35Her purity certainly had that, and that is also one of the characteristics of
- 4:42Adam and Eve was sexual purity.
- 4:45And so, my opinion, Mary was assumed while she was still alive.
- 4:49You're welcome to have your own opinion, but just make sure that it's based on something,
- 4:54Evidential, evidentiary from what we know through Scripture and through sacred tradition.
- 5:01This weekend, we have the 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time, period of growth as
- 5:07we prepare for the eventuality of Advent.
- 5:11And we'll be getting to those readings a little later in the program.
- 5:15I want to share a little God wink with you.
- 5:17I was telling John about this before the show. So my older brother,
- 5:21Jeffrey, is very active in a church in the Gary, Indiana Diocese, St.
- 5:27John the Evangelist, which is in St. John, Indiana.
- 5:30And Jeff and his wife have been members there for quite some time.
- 5:35Well, this last Sunday, they had, during the Mass, they celebrated the 50th
- 5:41anniversary of three couples.
- 5:43That was very nice when he wrote me about that on Monday of this week.
- 5:47And then he said, and by the way, the celebrant for the Mass,
- 5:51when he was just a young boy, was the ring bearer at one of the three weddings.
- 5:57Well, isn't that cool that he's now a priest?
- 6:00And he says, you won't believe who it was. It was Bishop Tilka from the Peoria Diocese.
- 6:06So my bishop was at my brother's church in Indiana, celebrating the 50th anniversary
- 6:11of a couple for whom he was ring bearer when he was a child.
- 6:15And I thought that was very, very cool.
- 6:17If you've never been to St. John's, St. John the Evangelist in St.
- 6:21John, Indiana, you ought to go.
- 6:23It's not only a beautiful, beautiful church, but next door to it,
- 6:28there is a life-size church
- 6:31representation of the stations of the cross. And it's absolutely breathtaking.
- 6:38You can sit at the table for the Last Supper with the apostles and Jesus.
- 6:44You can walk up to all these figures. And as you go through,
- 6:48it starts off very, very dark and gets more colorful as we go.
- 6:53And then at Jesus's death, it loses its color again. But at the resurrection,
- 6:58and I don't want to give anything away.
- 7:00What they have done to show the resurrection of Christ is an absolute work of art.
- 7:06It's one of the most moving things I've ever seen. It's just beautiful.
- 7:11Oh, and I'll tell you this part, just part of it. When you get to the burial
- 7:15and you walk into the tomb and you see the empty slab with some of the linens
- 7:22balled up at one end and some folded neatly at the other,
- 7:25turn around and look behind you. And that's all I'm going to tell you.
- 7:30It's really cool. It's beautifully done.
- 7:33And it's worth the trip. It takes about an hour and a half to two hours to get to St.
- 7:38John, Indiana from here. But it's well worth the trip to see this beautiful
- 7:42presentation out in a beautiful garden setting.
- 7:47It's the same length. The distance you walk is the same distance from the court of pilot,
- 7:58to Golgotha, the mount where he was crucified, where Christ was crucified.
- 8:05It's the same distance that Christ walked.
- 8:07So it really is just a beautiful, beautiful representation of the stations,
- 8:12and everyone should go there.
- 8:15Catch Mass while you're there. The church is beautiful.
- 8:18It's got a huge—at the top of the church, it's sort of domed,
- 8:23and it's kind of done in the round. and the baptismal font is heated.
- 8:29How cool is that? But at the top is this beautiful stained glass window of the
- 8:34Holy Spirit hovering over the nave.
- 8:37It's just, it's a great place. They have one thing I don't care for.
- 8:42Their candles, their vigil candles are electronic.
- 8:46You drop your money in the basket, you flick a little micro switch and a little
- 8:50flicker candle lights in front of you.
- 8:53I understand why they do it. candles create smoke smoke
- 8:56creates damage i mean it it it dulls the
- 8:59paint you know it just it creates a lot
- 9:02of yeah in the church and so
- 9:05a lot of new churches have gone to electronic candles but to me it's the smell
- 9:09and the warmth of the candle that that makes votives so special and to me this
- 9:15lacks that characteristic that ambiance but it is an absolutely beautiful church and they fill it.
- 9:22You can't believe how many people come there every Sunday.
- 9:26This church is full. In fact, at the family mass, which is the 10 o'clock,
- 9:30they have to set up hundreds of folding chairs. This is a big church.
- 9:34I asked my brother, because at our church, which is a pretty good-sized church,
- 9:38every Sunday to put on the mass, if you count in the choir and the greeters
- 9:44and the lectors and the servers, it takes about 38 laypeople to do the mass.
- 9:51130. Their church, every Sunday, 130 lay volunteers and lay ministers to help
- 10:00support the Mass. It is incredible.
- 10:03I mean, sometimes a lot of churches struggle to get that many parishioners to
- 10:07come to the Mass, let alone that many ministers to serve at the Mass.
- 10:11It's just phenomenal. So get yourself out to St. John sometime.
- 10:15I'm going to make one more plug. no matter what diocese you're a member in,
- 10:20what parish you're a member of, within the next 30 to 60 days,
- 10:24you're going to have what used to be called RCIA, is now called OCIA.
- 10:29You're going to have an OCIA program begin.
- 10:32This is the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults.
- 10:36This is the primary way that converts come into the Catholic faith.
- 10:41It's through this, usually a nine-month program. Meet every week for nine months.
- 10:45And it gives you everything you need to enter into the Catholic Church.
- 10:51An explanation of all the doctrines, all the dogmas, helps you to understand
- 10:56the Mass, helps you to gain an appreciation for liturgy and for Scripture.
- 11:03It's a marvelous in-depth program that will prepare you very well to enter the Catholic faith.
- 11:08And it's taking place somewhere near you in almost every parish.
- 11:13Sometimes parishes join together to do this. but there is an OCIA program near you.
- 11:18And I especially want to invite non-Catholics who are married to a Catholic.
- 11:24Because as parents with one Catholic spouse, you've probably agreed to raise
- 11:30your children Catholic.
- 11:32And that shouldn't just be the responsibility of the Catholic parent.
- 11:36This should be the responsibility of both parents to teach their children about
- 11:41a relationship with Christ, and you can't share what you don't have.
- 11:45So if you're in a mixed marriage, whether you're going to convert to Catholicism
- 11:49or not, you should at least know and understand the faith that your child is being raised in.
- 11:54So I invite you to please contact your local parish, ask about OCIA,
- 12:00and get yourself registered in that program, Attended Faithfully.
- 12:06And be able to be a better, stronger Christian example to your children.
- 12:12With that, we're going to take a short break. When we come back,
- 12:15we're going to look at the readings for the 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time.
- 12:19Stay tuned. Good news will be right back on Catholic Spirit Radio.
- 12:23Help us reach all of Rockford. Friends, help us complete the purchase of a translator,

- 12:41hear in the center and western parts of the metro. That will be cured when our
- 12:45translator on 94.5 FM comes on the air.
- 12:49For this to happen, we need your help. We are short just over $12,000.
- 12:53We ask you to help us evangelize Rockford with this purchase.

- 13:24Honey, what are we going to do for Mass this weekend? We'll be out of town and
- 13:28won't be here at our regular Mass time.
- 13:31Let's go online to check catholicspiritradio.com and find another Mass time.
- 13:36The website lists the regular Mass schedule plus most Holy Days of all the Catholic
- 13:40churches in and nearby all of the Catholic Spirit Radio listening areas.
- 13:45That's a lot in central and northern Illinois.
- 13:47Good. We'll easily be able to find another Mass time on catholicspiritradio.com.
- 13:53I heard that it has a huge list of Eucharistic adoration, too.
- 13:57You won't believe the number of churches that offer it. That's wonderful.
- 14:01The Eucharist brings me such peace. Are Reconciliation Times also listed at
- 14:06catholicspiritradio.com?
- 14:08Yes, and they even have a community calendar that lists local Catholic events.
- 14:12Let's check that out, too.
- 14:13Thank you, Catholic Spirit Radio, and in a much greater way, thank you, Jesus.

- 14:49Hello, this is Steve Gleason with your one-minute tool for Catholic evangelism.
- 14:52Here's the question for your non-Catholic friend. Are you lured by the half-century-old
- 14:55shift in Christianity that hails, I am supposed to be blessed with all my needs
- 14:59met, including excellent health, upward financial abundance,
- 15:02and sidestepping any adverse circumstance?
- 15:04Well, here's your three best friendship tools for Catholic evangelism.
- 15:06Number one, sand or rock, your prosperity church or your megachurch is offering
- 15:10you vanishing fantasies.
- 15:11Tens of millions are reaching for the lures that tickle a natural human quest
- 15:14for life with no heartaches. That is not Christianity as described by Jesus and the apostles.
- 15:18Secondly, there's 73 books, not just 73 individual verses of a dream life.
- 15:23God's merciful action in our life Brings us into seasons that are not pleasant
- 15:27We all struggle with expectations like Take up your cross and follow me We just
- 15:30can't skirt it This is a very real part of Christianity St.
- 15:33Paul said in multiple places What he suffered as loss He counted as rubbish
- 15:37In order that he might gain Christ And thirdly, my take on the lives of the
- 15:40saints Bluntly said, more went wrong than went right Except at the end And isn't that what counts?

- 16:00And welcome back to Good News. I am Deacon Al Lundy, and we're looking at the
- 16:05readings for Sunday, August 10th, the 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time.
- 16:12And as Christians, regardless of which Christian faith you belong to,
- 16:16we should be people of faith, hope, and love.
- 16:21And these three readings that we have this Sunday speak to us of faith and hope,
- 16:27and how they have been a part of our heritage throughout the Christian history,
- 16:33as well as the Judaic history.
- 16:36So our first reading is from the Old Testament, from the Book of Wisdom. It's very short.
- 16:41And by the way, the other two readings are pretty lengthy, which is good news,
- 16:45because most of the times if you have long readings, you have a short homily.
- 16:49And today is going to be no exception to that. So, reading from the Book of Wisdom.
- 16:54The night of the Passover was known beforehand to our fathers,
- 16:58that with sure knowledge of the oaths in which they had put their faith,
- 17:02they might have courage.
- 17:04Your people awaited the salvation of the just and the destruction of their foes.
- 17:09For when you punished our adversaries, in this you glorified us whom you had summoned.
- 17:14For in secret, the holy children of the good were offering sacrifice and putting
- 17:19into effect with one accord, the divine institution.
- 17:23So yes, the Jewish people knew ahead of time what was going to happen Passover
- 17:27night. An angel came and told them, right? Moses was aware of it.
- 17:30They told everyone that the angel of death was coming and that to avoid its
- 17:36effects, that they would need to christen their doorways with the blood of a sacrificed lamb.
- 17:43I think it's really interesting. If you read the scriptures,
- 17:46it tells that the parts of the door that were coated with the blood,
- 17:51and it's the sign of the cross. It's a vertical and horizontal painting on the door, on the doorframe.
- 17:57And so we already see the coming of Christ and his sacrifice of blood,
- 18:04the Lamb of God. So this all makes perfect sense.
- 18:07What started off in the Jewish faith was brought to fulfillment by Christ in
- 18:14the establishment of the Christian faith.
- 18:17In our second reading, it's a letter from Paul to the Hebrews.
- 18:22Well, we think it's Paul.
- 18:23There's a lot of disagreements over who the author or authors of Hebrews was, were.
- 18:30So, but this is part of the New Testament writings.
- 18:34Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen.
- 18:40Because of it the ancients were all attested.
- 18:48By faith, Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was
- 18:53to receive as an inheritance.
- 18:54He went out, not knowing where he was to go.
- 18:57By faith he sojourned into the promised land as into a foreign country,
- 19:02dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs of the same promise.
- 19:06For he was looking forward to the city with foundations whose architect and maker is God.
- 19:11By faith he received power to generate even though he was past the normal age,
- 19:17and Sarah herself was sterile, for he thought that the one who had made the
- 19:21promise was trustworthy.
- 19:23So it was that there came forth from one man himself as good as dead,
- 19:30descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky, and as countless as the sands on the seashore.
- 19:36All these died in faith. They did not receive what they'd been promised,
- 19:40but saw it and greeted it from afar, and acknowledged themselves to be strangers
- 19:45and aliens on earth, for those who speak thus show that they are seeking a homeland.
- 19:51If they had been thinking of the land from which they had come,
- 19:54they would have had opportunity to return.
- 19:58But now they desire a better homeland, a heavenly one.
- 20:01Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
- 20:07By faith Abraham, when put to the test, offered up Isaac.
- 20:12And he who had received the promises was ready to offer his only son,
- 20:16of whom it was said, Through Isaac's descendants shall bear your name.
- 20:21He reasoned that God was able to raise even from the dead, and he received Isaac
- 20:26back as a symbol. The word of the Lord.
- 20:29And we'll get back to the meaning of that reading after we listen to the gospel according to Luke.
- 20:36Jesus said to His disciples, Do not be afraid any longer, little flock,
- 20:40for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.
- 20:43Sell your belongings and give alms. Provide money bags for yourselves that do
- 20:47not wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth destroy.
- 20:54For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.
- 20:59Gird your loins and light your lamps, and be like servants who await their master's
- 21:03return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks.
- 21:08Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival.
- 21:12Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have them recline at table,
- 21:17and proceed to wait on them.
- 21:19And should he come in the second or third watch and find them prepared in this
- 21:23way, blessed are those servants.
- 21:25Be sure of this. If the master of the household had known the hour when the
- 21:30thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.
- 21:34You also must be prepared, for in an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.
- 21:40Then Peter said, Lord, is this parable meant for us or for everyone?
- 21:45And the Lord replied, Who then is the faithful and prudent steward,
- 21:50whom the master will put in charge of his servants, to distribute the food and
- 21:55allowance at the proper time.
- 21:57Blessed is that servant whom his master on arrival finds doing so.
- 22:02Truly, I say to you, the master will put that servant in charge of all his property.
- 22:07But if that servant says to himself, my master is delayed in coming and begins
- 22:12to beat the manservants and the maidservants and to eat and drink and get drunk,
- 22:17then that servant's master will come on an unexpected day and at an unexpected
- 22:22hour and will punish the servant severely and assign him a place with the unfaithful.
- 22:28That servant who knew his master's will but did not make preparations nor act
- 22:34in accord with his will shall be beaten severely.
- 22:37The servant who was ignorant of his master's will but acted in a way deserving
- 22:41of a severe beating shall be beaten only lightly.
- 22:45Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will
- 22:50be demanded of the person entrusted with more. The Gospel of the Lord.
- 22:55Probably one of the more difficult readings to understand, but there's a good explanation to it.
- 23:01Think for a moment about the person who you most associate with faithfulness.
- 23:05Who comes to your mind? Is it someone who expresses gratitude to God and others
- 23:10during only the good times?
- 23:12Or is it someone whose steadiness and calmness stand out even when they face a hardship?
- 23:17What is it about them that makes you think, this is a person of deep faith?
- 23:22Today's scriptures invite us to reflect on that kind of faithfulness,
- 23:26a faith that endures not only in moments of blessing, but also in moments of difficulty.
- 23:31It's a faithfulness that's rooted in hope, not fleeting optimism,
- 23:36but something deeper and more lasting.
- 23:39The first reading from the Book of Wisdom recalls the night of the Passover,
- 23:42God's people were spared from the worst of the angel of death.
- 23:46It was a moment when being in a right relationship with God meant survival.
- 23:51Yet not all of those who were spared lived to see the promised land.
- 23:55Some wandered for years in the desert, facing hardships that tested their faith.
- 24:00Their journey wasn't a straight line to prosperity. It wasn't easy.
- 24:03Still, they had a promise from God, and that promise sustained them.
- 24:08Being in a right relationship with God does not guarantee worldly success or
- 24:12a life free of suffering, and not
- 24:14all of our brothers and sisters in the Christian faith understand that.
- 24:19In fact, sometimes they think quite the opposite.
- 24:22But there are moments when being faithful to God can lead us into hardship.
- 24:26That's why Jesus cautions us in today's gospel not to place our hope in things
- 24:31that pass away—wealth, status, security.
- 24:34We think we have a good life when we have those things. But our reward,
- 24:39our true home, is not here. It's in heaven.
- 24:43And achieving that goal, that hope, is going to require a faith in God that
- 24:51isn't dependent on well-being, wealth, and status.
- 24:55It relies on praying for the virtue of hope.
- 25:01The hope of the faithful is not a naive optimism. It harkens back to the attitude
- 25:06of Abraham and our other ancestors in the faith, deep and abiding sense that
- 25:11God is calling us out of darkness and into our true homeland.
- 25:15We have not yet seen the fullness of our heavenly home.
- 25:18We've glimpsed it, the moment of our baptism, for we are united in the triumph
- 25:23of the crucified risen Lord, and thus we arm ourselves with the hope of the
- 25:27Holy Spirit rather than with hate and apathy that cause human suffering.
- 25:32So this kind of hope gives us the readiness of which Jesus speaks of in the gospel.
- 25:37It can't distinguish what is a momentary blessing from what's truly God's presence.
- 25:42Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival.
- 25:46Those who are ready are those who have a deep relationship with the master,
- 25:50those who know him and know what he wants of us.
- 25:54And what does he want? He wants us to love God And to love our neighbor,
- 25:59That should be your goal Each and every day That should be our prayer Each and
- 26:04every day Help us, God, to follow your Son,
- 26:09May Almighty God bless you Protect you from all evil And bring you to everlasting life Amen.
