- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Good morning, everyone, and welcome back
- 0:17to Connecting the Dots. I'm Alex. Hi, Morgan.
- 0:19It is Monday, October 6th, 2025. Hope you had
- 0:22a good weekend. Yeah, I hope so, too. Out here
- 0:25in Sacramento, it's looking like another sunny
- 0:26day, high around 84 later. Pretty nice start
- 0:30to the week for us. Definitely. Though, checking
- 0:32the national picture, it looks like Florida's
- 0:34still dealing with that heavy rain and flooding.
- 0:37And there's a cold front moving through the middle
- 0:39of country, mid -south Ohio Valley, bringing
- 0:41in some storms. So stay safe out there if that's
- 0:44you. Absolutely. Now, looking at the markets,
- 0:47things ended Friday a little mixed, didn't they?
- 0:49Yeah, slightly down the day, the Dow dipped about
- 0:520 .15%, closed just over $46 ,700. But, you know,
- 0:57it still had a strong week overall, up almost
- 0:58a percent. OK, and the S &P 500? Pretty similar
- 1:01story. Down just a tiny bit Friday, 0 .07%, ending
- 1:05at $6 ,729. But again, solid weekly gain there,
- 1:09too. And Bitcoin. Still climbing. Oh, yeah. Still
- 1:13got that positive momentum up over 1 % since
- 1:16yesterday, trading around $124 ,769. And the
- 1:21weekly gain is pretty impressive, over 9 % since
- 1:24last Monday. Still seeing a lot of interest there.
- 1:26Wow. OK, so a bit of a mixed bag starting the
- 1:28week, but some definite bright spots. Exactly.
- 1:31Now, before we jump into our main stories today,
- 1:33we want to give a quick shout out to one of our
- 1:35sponsors. That's right. This show is supported
- 1:37by Pins and Aces. They're a fantastic place for
- 1:40premium golf apparel and all kinds of cool accessories.
- 1:43Yeah, really high quality stuff whether you're
- 1:45actually golfing or just want to look sharp.

- 1:49the promo code SNARFUL, that's S -N -A -R -F
- 1:52-U -L, you'll get 21 % off your entire order.
- 1:55Just head over to their website pinsandassas
- 1:57.com. That's pinsandassas .com. Okay, so let's
- 2:02get into it. Today's Morningstar report has three
- 2:05really interesting stories that, well, they really
- 2:07connect, showing some big strategic plays in
- 2:10tech right now. They really do. We're talking
- 2:11about everything from who's running major telecom
- 2:14companies to the absolute gold rush for AI computing
- 2:19power. Exactly. Let's kick things off with story
- 2:23number one. This involves a, frankly, Pretty
- 2:27surprising change right at the top of Verizon.
- 2:31Yeah, big news. Verizon Communications announced
- 2:33that Dan Schulman, who you'll probably know as
- 2:35the former CEO of PayPal, is taking over as their
- 2:39new CEO, effective immediately. Immediately.
- 2:43Wow, so Hans Vestberg is out. He's out as CEO,
- 2:46yeah. Schulman's in and Mark Bertolini is stepping
- 2:49in as the new chairman of the board as well.
- 2:51OK, so Schulman, that's not a telecom background,
- 2:54is it? PayPal is fintech payments. Not at all.
- 2:57And that's what makes this so interesting. Vesberg,
- 2:59you know, he was the 5G guy. He architected that
- 3:02whole strategy, oversaw the huge C -band spectrum
- 3:05purchase. Billions on that spectrum. Exactly.
- 3:07A massive bet on the network build out. And he
- 3:09was also managing the pending Frontier Communications
- 3:13acquisition, that $20 billion deal. Right. The
- 3:15one that's supposed to close, what, early next
- 3:17year? Q1 2026. That's the timeline. Yeah. So
- 3:20the board's rationale seems to be, well, Vestberg
- 3:22did the heavy lifting on building the network
- 3:24infrastructure. Kind of laid the tracks, so to
- 3:26speak. Pretty much. And with that frontier deal
- 3:30moving towards the finish line, they said it
- 3:31was the right time for a transition. So bring
- 3:35in the money guy? Is that the idea? Yeah. Shulman's
- 3:37known for growth, right? He's known for massive
- 3:39growth and, crucially, monetization. The board
- 3:43called him a seasoned and decisive leader. His
- 3:46job isn't really about building the network anymore.
- 3:48It's about redefining Verizon's trajectory. Meaning?
- 3:52Meaning growing market share, definitely cutting
- 3:54the cost to serve customers, and optimizing how
- 3:57they spend their capital. Think about his record
- 3:59at PayPal. It was a tripled revenue. Tripled
- 4:02revenue from like... $8 billion to $30 billion
- 4:05and grew earnings per share five times over.
- 4:08He knows how to squeeze value out of a platform.
- 4:11So if you're a Verizon customer, this could mean
- 4:13more aggressive marketing, maybe changes to plans
- 4:17or service to cut costs. Could be. It signals
- 4:20a really intense focus on customer acquisition
- 4:23and efficiency. They want to regain market leadership,
- 4:25and that might affect prices, plans, how services
- 4:28delivered. It's all about monetizing that network
- 4:31Vesberg built. And Vesberg isn't just gone, though.
- 4:34He's staying on for a bit. Yeah, they're keeping
- 4:36him involved. He stays on the board until the
- 4:38twenty twenty six annual meeting and he's serving
- 4:40as a special advisor for a full year until October
- 4:44twenty twenty six. Makes sense, especially to
- 4:46help with that frontier integration. That's a
- 4:48huge piece to absorb. Absolutely. And interestingly,
- 4:51Verizon was quick to reiterate their full year
- 4:54twenty twenty five financial guidance. So they're
- 4:57signaling confidence that Schulman can step in
- 4:59and execute without, you know. disrupting things
- 5:02immediately. Okay, so a big shift from network
- 5:04building to network monetization at Verizon.
- 5:08That actually leads perfectly onto our next story,
- 5:10which is all about the infrastructure that fuels
- 5:12so much of this demand, AI chips. Right. The
- 5:15race for AI compute is just staggering. And this
- 5:18next story is a huge development in that race,
- 5:20potentially shaking up the dominance of NVIDIA.
- 5:22Story number two, advanced micro devices, AMD.
- 5:26has landed a massive deal with OpenAI. Massive
- 5:30is the right word. It's a multi -year partnership
- 5:32where AMD will supply OpenAI with its Instinct
- 5:35GPUs. Okay, GPUs, the graphics processing units
- 5:38that are essential for training and running these
- 5:40huge AI models. But let's talk scale here. How
- 5:43big is this deal? The numbers are almost hard
- 5:46to grasp. OpenAI is committing to deploy six
- 5:49gigawatts of AMD GPUs over several years. Six
- 5:53gigawatts? That sounds like power plant capacity.
- 5:57How do we even translate that for AI compute?
- 6:00It's an enormous amount of computing power. To
- 6:02give you some context, OpenAI already has a big
- 6:05commitment with NVIDIA, reportedly for around
- 6:0710 gigawatts of their systems. So adding 6 gigawatts
- 6:11from AMD is, well, it's a huge expansion and
- 6:14diversification. So they're not putting all their
- 6:15eggs in the NVIDIA basket anymore. Exactly. OpenAI
- 6:18needs this compute power desperately. Sam Altman
- 6:21keeps saying it's their biggest bottleneck. This
- 6:23deal gives them a second major supplier, which
- 6:25is crucial for security and... Frankly, probably
- 6:28for negotiating power, too. And for AMD, this
- 6:31must be absolutely game -changing. Oh, completely.
- 6:34It's billions of dollars expected to bring in
- 6:36tens of billions in annual revenue just from
- 6:39this deal alone. It's a massive validation of
- 6:41their AI chips, their Instinct line, and their
- 6:44software stack, which has been seen as lagging
- 6:46Nvidia's CUDA platform. Right. The software has
- 6:49been the sticking point for many. This suggests
- 6:52OpenAI is confident AMD can deliver on that front,
- 6:55too. It seems so. And the knock -on effect is
- 6:57potentially even bigger. AMD is projecting this
- 6:59deal could lead to over $100 billion in new revenue
- 7:03over the next four years. $100 billion. New revenue.
- 7:07On top of their existing business. That's what
- 7:09they're forecasting, yeah. From OpenAI and other
- 7:11customers who see this huge endorsement and decide,
- 7:14AMD is a viable, powerful alternative to NVIDIA.
- 7:17Just to put that in perspective, what's AMD's
- 7:19total revenue expected to be this year? Analysts
- 7:21were projecting somewhere around 32 -33 billion
- 7:25dollars for all of 2025. So yeah, 100 billion
- 7:28dollars in new AI chip revenue over four years
- 7:30is... it's transformative. It basically implies
- 7:33they expect to triple the size of the company
- 7:34based on this momentum. Wow. The pressure must
- 7:37be immense internally to deliver on that. Okay,
- 7:42so a huge supply deal. Massive validation for
- 7:45AMD. But there's more to it, isn't there? This
- 7:48isn't just a standard customer -supplier relationship.
- 7:51Not even close. And that brings us straight to
- 7:53story number three. The market reaction and the
- 7:56really unique financial structure of this partnership.
- 7:59Right, so the market obviously loved this news
- 8:01for AMD. Stock jumped over 30 % almost instantly.
- 8:04Skyrocketed, yeah. Predictable reaction. But
- 8:06why this is more than just a sale is how they've
- 8:09tied open AI into AMD success. Tell us about
- 8:11that part, the ownership stake. This is the wild
- 8:14part. AMD issued open AI a warrant, basically
- 8:17the right to buy stock later for up to 160 million
- 8:21shares of AMD common stock. 160 million shares.
- 8:24How much of the company is that? If open AI exercises
- 8:27that entire warrant, it could give them. Roughly
- 8:3010 % ownership of AMD. Get out. So OpenAI, the
- 8:33AI giant valued at half a trillion dollars, isn't
- 8:35just buying chips. They're potentially becoming
- 8:37one of AMD's biggest shareholders. Precisely.
- 8:40They are now financially incentivized, deeply
- 8:44incentivized for AMD to succeed wildly. It completely
- 8:47aligns their interests beyond just getting chips
- 8:49delivered. That's a strategic masterstroke, really.
- 8:51It turns your biggest, most demanding customer
- 8:54into your partner. Exactly. And the way the warrant
- 8:57works reinforces this. It's not automatic. Getting
- 9:00those shares depends on two things. Which are?
- 9:03One, hitting the deployment milestones, actually
- 9:05getting those six gigawatts of GPUs installed
- 9:07and running. And two, meeting specific AMD share
- 9:11price targets that get progressively higher.
- 9:13How high are we talking? What's the ultimate
- 9:15target? The final chunk of shares only unlocks
- 9:17if AMD stock price hits $600 a share. $600. What
- 9:21did it close at on Friday? Around $164 or $165.
- 9:25So they need the stock to basically almost quadruple
- 9:28from here for OpenAI to get the full benefit.
- 9:30Yep. It's incredibly ambitious. It essentially
- 9:33ties OpenAI's reward to AMD achieving massive
- 9:36market cap growth, way beyond just fulfilling
- 9:38the hardware order. This just shows the, I don't
- 9:41know, the intensity, maybe the desperation in
- 9:43the race for AI infrastructure, doesn't it? Companies
- 9:46are willing to trade potentially 10 % ownership
- 9:48just to secure the compute they need. It's the
- 9:51new reality. Securing that core infrastructure
- 9:53is everything. It's the biggest bottleneck, the
- 9:55biggest strategic imperative. This kind of deal
- 9:58structure might become more common as the AI
- 10:00build out continues. You don't just buy from
- 10:02your suppliers, you invest in them. Yeah, it
- 10:04certainly puts Nvidia on notice in a way that
- 10:06just a big sales contract wouldn't have. AMD
- 10:09now has OpenAI literally invested in its success.
- 10:13A powerful alliance. Okay, before we wrap things
- 10:17up and connect all these dots one last time,
- 10:18let's quickly mention our other great sponsor.
- 10:20Absolutely. We also want to thank SCONI. That's
- 10:23S -K -O -N -I. They make premium golf shoes.
- 10:26Really stylish, super comfortable, great performance
- 10:29on the course. If you're looking for top -tier
- 10:31golf shoes, definitely check them out. And Skone
- 10:34also has an offer for you. Use that same promo
- 10:36code SNARFUL, S -N -A -R -F -U -L, at checkout
- 10:40on their site, skone .com, and you'll get 15
- 10:43% off your purchase. Great deal from Skone. That's
- 10:46skone .com, code SNARFUL for 15 % off. Okay,
- 10:50so let's quickly recap what we've covered. Three
- 10:52big stories, all interconnected. Right. First,
- 10:55we saw that major leadership change at Verizon.
- 10:57Out goes Vestberg, the network builder. In comes
- 11:00Schulman, the monetization expert from PayPal.
- 11:02Signals a shift towards aggressive growth and
- 11:05efficiency. Then the AI infrastructure race heated
- 11:08up dramatically. AMD scored that massive multi
- 11:11-year, multi -gigawatt GPU deal with OpenAI,
- 11:14validating them as a serious competitor to NVIDIA.
- 11:17And critically, that deal wasn't just about buying
- 11:20chips. AMD gave OpenAI warrants potentially worth
- 11:2310 % of the company, tying their futures together,
- 11:26and incentivizing huge growth with share price
- 11:28targets reaching up to $600. So the big picture,
- 11:31the connection here seems to be this intense
- 11:33focus across the tech world on controlling and
- 11:36extracting value from a central infrastructure.
- 11:38Whether it's the 5G fiber networks, Verizon is
- 11:40now looking to monetize heavily, or the AI chips
- 11:43that AMD and NVIDIA are fighting over. Yeah,
- 11:46it's a battle fought with executive changes,
- 11:49massive supply deals, and even unprecedented
- 11:53ownership stakes. It really underscores that
- 11:55the physical hardware layer is absolutely critical
- 11:58right now. Fascinating stuff happening. Lots
- 12:00to keep watching there. Definitely. We're here
