Transcript
- 0:05Hello everyone, and welcome back to another episode of the line
- 0:09of writing for teachers. Now, today's episode is very
- 0:14much another one that hits close to home, and it's from chaos to
- 0:19calm classroom and home balance. And look, I am not going to
- 0:25pretend that I have this perfect because I do not.
- 0:29It has taken me years to figure this type of balance out and I
- 0:34am still working on it. You've probably heard all of the
- 0:38tips before, but I'm just going to share what works for me.
- 0:42So take it, leave it, adapt it. It's just, it's as easy as that.
- 0:45You don't have to do any of these things.
- 0:47I'm just going to share with you what works for me because maybe
- 0:52something great will resonate with you.
- 0:54But I like to break my life into three parts.
- 0:57Time before school, time at school or work, and time after
- 1:02school. Three things.
- 1:04And when I start looking at my days that way, things to me got
- 1:08a lot clearer at school. I make a list of what actually
- 1:13has to get done there, whether it's testing kids, printing,
- 1:17copying, doing meetings, just all of the non negotiable stuff.
- 1:22And that way I'm not carrying any of that mental load home.
- 1:28And at home, I also make a list because I'm a list human of what
- 1:31is for family, what's for house, and what is for me.
- 1:35And yes, planning downtime is part of the plan.
- 1:39If it's not on the list, it won't happen.
- 1:41That's just honesty. So I'll give you my example
- 1:45routine, not because it's perfect, but because this is
- 1:48what works for me. So I get to work early so that I
- 1:52can smash out my admin tasks and actually leave on time in the
- 1:56afternoons most days. That is because I have kids that
- 2:01need to go to sport. OK, I have a life outside of my
- 2:04job. You all should too.
- 2:06So while they're at training though, I'm not watching if I'm
- 2:10if I'm not watching a game. So say they're actually training
- 2:13and they're not playing a game. If they're playing a game, I
- 2:15will actually watch the game and interact with that because I'm a
- 2:18competitive human. But if they're training, I use
- 2:22that time for myself. So that is reading a book,
- 2:25relaxing, just filling my own cup.
- 2:28Some training sessions are easier because grandparents drop
- 2:31the kids off and I just have to pick up and I go 15 minutes
- 2:34earlier. So I get 15 minutes of
- 2:36uninterrupted, like reading a book time.
- 2:38Easy as that. In the mornings, I wake up
- 2:41early, so I get to work early because I wake up early.
- 2:44I wake up early, I get my workout done and I tick that box
- 2:48before the kids are even awake. And somehow my body thinks that
- 2:51that happens on weekends too. And sometimes it does.
- 2:54But anyway, I get up early. I meditate first, so I listen to
- 2:58a very short 2 to 5 minute meditation.
- 3:01I don't scroll on my phone. I don't do anything like that.
- 3:03I get up, I meditate or I listen to some affirmations and then I
- 3:07do a workout. So yes, I use my phone and watch
- 3:10a screen to do that, but I do a workout so I have moved my body.
- 3:14Once I have done that, I then get ready for my day.
- 3:18So that's when you have your shower, get dressed to all of
- 3:21the things and then I get my kids bags ready for them to
- 3:24pack. I get breakfast stuff organised,
- 3:27then I go and wake the kids up. My kids have tech time in the
- 3:31morning. I own that because it saves my
- 3:34sanity. Honestly, it does.
- 3:38I'm just going to be real with you.
- 3:39Like that's how it works. I pack lunches the night before,
- 3:43so in the morning it is literally just grab and go.
- 3:46They we grab them, we put them in their bags.
- 3:48That's what they do. During this time, when they're
- 3:51eating their breakfast and I'm getting ready for work, I will
- 3:54quite often do my gratitude practise.
- 3:56That's when I sit down and I think about and write down 10
- 3:59things I'm grateful for that day.
- 4:01So I'm starting the day in a positive mindset.
- 4:05It also helps with getting the kids ready because they see me
- 4:07writing, they talk about it too. It's just that type of thing.
- 4:11But yeah, the kids have technology while I'm getting
- 4:13ready for work because that works for us.
- 4:15Their grandparents, as I said, help a lot with pick up in the
- 4:18afternoons, which gives me some breathing room to finish up my
- 4:22day. So they go home, they've left
- 4:24the school grounds because I work at the same school.
- 4:27And then after that I can get some more jobs done before I
- 4:30leave. And then when I'm at home, I
- 4:33don't do school work. Literally The only exception is
- 4:39reporting time, and in that time I allocate specific time to do
- 4:43it. But otherwise, when I am home, I
- 4:46am home. That's it.
- 4:48That took years. It's taken years to get that to
- 4:51happen. But marrying the man that I did,
- 4:55he has also assisted a lot in this process because he gets
- 4:58very angry if I actually do work at home.
- 5:02This time when I'm recording my podcasts is done on a night of
- 5:06the week when my kids actually have swimming.
- 5:08So they are not home. They are off doing their
- 5:10swimming lessons or doing something.
- 5:12And that's when the grandparents and their dad do all of that so
- 5:16that I can do my recording, My scheduling of posts, like all of
- 5:19the things that I need to do for me, for my passion projects gets
- 5:23done when they're not home. And then when they're home, I
- 5:25cook their tea, we have everything ready, we have time
- 5:27together, they go to bed, easy as that.
- 5:29So I am still not doing work when they are home.
- 5:33So another thing, and I'm just going to be real with you, but I
- 5:38don't clean my house. That sounds gross, but I pay
- 5:41someone to do it and I will own that because again, it saves my
- 5:44sanity. I am not spending two hours on
- 5:48my weekend cleaning my house and it would take two to three hours
- 5:52for me to do it to a standard that I'm happy with.
- 5:54I'm not spending that time doing that.
- 5:57I'm going to spend time with my family and time doing stuff that
- 6:00I want to do. So yes, I budget and I allocate
- 6:05and I have ever since I got pregnant with my kids, my
- 6:08husband and I had a conversation when I found out it was twins, I
- 6:12was not cleaning because I did not have that many hours in my
- 6:15life. So I have had a cleaner for how
- 6:18old are my kids, 1010 years. I've had a cleaner for 10 years.
- 6:21That's it. I have someone that I pay to
- 6:23clean my house and I will own that.
- 6:25And if you don't have that and if you can budget for yourself
- 6:28to have that, it is such a blessing.
- 6:30You get so much out of it because you get time back.
- 6:33It's time freedom. And I will pay for that any day
- 6:35of the week. So I own that.
- 6:37Let's just make my life easier. So as I said, on top of my
- 6:40teaching, I run a business and this podcast.
- 6:43So that's when I block out that afternoon for my business.
- 6:46And sometimes on a Sunday afternoon, I need to record
- 6:49things and that's fine. And honestly, it doesn't feel
- 6:52like work. It is actually quite relaxing
- 6:54for me and on a Sunday afternoon, everyone's usually
- 6:57really tired anyway, so the kids and hubby don't really mind if
- 7:01I'm doing that. But the key to all of this is
- 7:04that when I'm at work, I am present at work.
- 7:08I focus on the things that need to get done and if it doesn't
- 7:12get done, guess what? The world does not end.
- 7:16There is a quote that I actually love that it's it's not a very
- 7:20positive quote, but it just makes sense.
- 7:24If you died tomorrow, they'd replace you in a week, so does
- 7:27it really matter? Honestly, just let that sit with
- 7:31you. I think I used to get really
- 7:34offended by people saying this to me, but working for the
- 7:38amount of time that I have and seeing the shortages that we
- 7:42have and how we would like, we would be begging for teachers to
- 7:45teach at the moment. But honestly, if something was
- 7:49to happen and you can't do your job tomorrow, we are just going
- 7:52to find someone to replace you. It is what it is.
- 7:56But can someone actually replace you in your friendship group or
- 8:01in your family unit or in all the things that you do in your
- 8:04life? No, because you are the only you
- 8:09and that is your power. So just remember all of that
- 8:13because the truth is we put so much pressure on ourselves as
- 8:18teachers. So much pressure.
- 8:21But if you are doing your best always, you can't let that kind
- 8:25of thing consume you. You don't have to work till 8/9,
- 8:3110:00 at night lesson planning and doing all the things to then
- 8:36turn up and teach again the next day.
- 8:38You're doing too much if you're doing that.
- 8:40You need to schedule your time. You need to do things wisely.
- 8:44I had deep seated teacher and mom guilt for years learning how
- 8:49to do this process and allocate my time and now I do not have
- 8:53that. You probably get that that
- 8:56jealousy feeling when you see people leaving school.
- 8:59Oh what? How can they go?
- 9:01It's 3:30 and they're walking out the door.
- 9:03How are they prepared for the next day?
- 9:06Honestly, they have used their time wisely and some teachers
- 9:11are amazing at it. But yes, I will get to work at
- 9:147:30 in the morning when my kids are up a ridiculous hours.
- 9:18Anyway, we are up, we are ready, we are out the door, We get a
- 9:21coffee on the way to school, whatever.
- 9:22That's me. I like that.
- 9:24That's my little treat. We go to school, we get
- 9:27organised for our day, the kids have some tech time.
- 9:30I get organised because when kids are at school, that's when
- 9:34testing needs to happen. So that's when I'm going to do
- 9:36it because I can't test a kid or talk to that kid when they're
- 9:39not at school. So I need to do the things that
- 9:42require physical human beings to be there when they're there.
- 9:46And then the other times is my admin time.
- 9:48So that's what I do and I work that out and I work around all
- 9:51of that. My big tip for you though,
- 9:55something really important is to make sure that your family and
- 9:58your friends are on board with your schedule.
- 10:01Share your schedule, get everyone in the in the loop so
- 10:05you're not carrying all of this alone.
- 10:09And most importantly, guard yourself.
- 10:12Care time with your life, with your life.
- 10:17Because if you don't have that time, you won't have a Life, OK,
- 10:20because your cup is going to be empty.
- 10:22Go back onto my Instagram, have a look.
- 10:24Now I have got ideas and reminders about self love and
- 10:28self care and quotes for you to go back to.
- 10:32They're not there just because they look pretty.
- 10:34I have spent time, effort and energy creating those posts so
- 10:38that you see them and go, oh, Mel's trying to remind me that I
- 10:43need to take care of myself today.
- 10:45Because you need to do that because you need to fill your
- 10:48own cup first in order for you to do anything else with your
- 10:51life. So please make sure you are
- 10:54guarding that time. As I said before I share we have
- 10:58a shared calendar in our family like we use the Time Tree app.
- 11:02We share that amongst us so everyone can see where everyone
- 11:05needs to be and when so that we can protect and guard our time
- 11:09wisely. So if I have scheduled in and
- 11:13for me this is myself care like a hairdressing appointment in
- 11:15the school holidays, my mom can see that on the app and goes
- 11:18Yep, OK cool. I need to have the twins from
- 11:21this time to this time because Mel's having self care time.
- 11:24That's it. It's as easy as that.
- 11:27If my husband books in time off from work, that goes in the time
- 11:30tree calendar so everyone knows when he's got a roster day off.
- 11:33Oh Yep, he could do those jobs for us today because he's got
- 11:36that day off. He doesn't need to do it when
- 11:38he's working a long day because we've scheduled that in already.
- 11:42So it's all of those things that come.
- 11:45And I'm a very, very organised human being and I love this type
- 11:48of thing. This is my niche of being
- 11:50organised. I just love to do that.
- 11:54So that's all of my little bits and chicks of handy bits of
- 11:58information about having a bit of classroom and home balance
- 12:02and how to do it all. Because you can't be thriving in
- 12:05chaos. You just can't.
- 12:06If you've got chaos at home and chaos at work, it just doesn't.
- 12:08It doesn't work. And if you've got calm at work
- 12:11and chaos at home, you will still come to work frantic and
- 12:14frazzled. You need to have a balance in
- 12:16both. So you'll need to put some
- 12:18effort and work into doing those things and scheduling your times
- 12:23so that you can make it work. Do a brain dump in the morning
- 12:26if you have to. Just get a piece of paper and
- 12:27write down all the things that are in your head that you think
- 12:29you need to do today. Then prioritise them and go, OK,
- 12:33these are all the things I need to get done at home.
- 12:35These are all the things I need to get done at work.
- 12:37These are the things that really actually need to be done.
- 12:40So I'm going to focus on those today.
- 12:42That's what you need to do. If it works for me, it might
- 12:45work for you. Give it a try and see how you
- 12:47go. But don't let all of those to do
- 12:51lists consume you and guard yourself.
- 12:53Care time with your life. So if you're feeling like you
- 12:58are stuck in chaos right now, just start small.
- 13:02Break up your day into parts. Make lists yard your downtime
- 13:07and you will be absolutely amazed at how much karma your
- 13:11life will feel when you just stop trying to do everything all
- 13:16the time. When you're looking at all of
- 13:20your to do lists, think about if that is a task that you alone
- 13:25have to do, or can it be reallocated, especially if it's
- 13:28at home? Are you the one that has to
- 13:31continue to play bin Jenga and empty the bin, or can you get a
- 13:35child or other human being to do that job for you?
- 13:39I don't clean my house because I allocate that job to somebody
- 13:43else. Is there some things that you
- 13:45could allocate to somebody else or allocate some time elsewhere
- 13:50in your week, All of those types of things?
- 13:54OK, think about that. Stop trying to do everything
- 13:57yourself. I did that for years, I got
- 14:00burnt out. Learn from my mistakes please
- 14:05and meditate. Take some time out for you and
- 14:08to focus. So if you are currently in a
- 14:11really big state of chaos and unsteady you need to do some EFT
- 14:15tapping. If you don't know what that is,
- 14:17ask me and message me I will show you.
- 14:21Do some meditation, do some nervous system regulation.
- 14:25That's what you need to work on to help calm yourself so then
- 14:28you can actually process what's going on.
- 14:31So lots of things in there. Lots of Nuggets of wisdom, I
- 14:34hope. Thank you for hanging out with
- 14:36me today. And if this episode has helped
- 14:39you, please share it with a friend.
- 14:41Someone might need this reminder too.
- 14:43Remember that you are more than your job.
- 14:45You deserve calm and balance and joy in your life and if no one's
- 14:51told you this today, you are amazing.
- 14:54You are loved and you are so valued.
- 14:57So please don't ever forget that.
- 15:00You are valued at home and you are valued at work, but there is
- 15:04only one you and that is your power.
- 15:06So Please remember that. Have a most had the most amazing
- 15:10day, afternoon, week, wherever you are up to.
- 15:13And I'll talk to you again soon. Bye, guys.
