- 0:15From Troy Public Radio, this is the Exchange from In Focus, and I'm Carolyn Hutcheson.
- 0:22If you've ever dreamed of owning your own business, the U.S. Small Business Administration
- 0:29can help you develop a business plan. Tyler Teresa, Southeastern Regional Administrator,
- 0:36joins us with some new ideas.
- 0:43Tyler, welcome back to Troy Public Radio.
- 0:46Carolyn, thank you so much for having me. It's always a pleasure to be here on Troy Public Radio
- 0:50to talk about all things SBA.
- 0:53So Tyler, from your perspective, what is the state of the economy?
- 0:59As the Southeast Regional Administrator, I'm traveling all around the Southeast,
- 1:03and I see a lot of optimism.
- 1:05I can also back that with what just happened with the recent jobs report.
- 1:09We had 178,000 new jobs, a lot of that in transportation and construction.
- 1:14On top of that, the consumer confidence for the month of March grew to 91.8%.
- 1:21So when I'm out there and I'm talking to businesses, they're excited about what's happening,
- 1:25especially when you look at what the Work and Family Tax Cut just did.
- 1:29On average, the return was $3,500 for most people.
- 1:32On top of that, with the 20% small business deduction alone,
- 1:36it delivered relief for over 8 million entrepreneurs.
- 1:39So when I travel around the Southeast, I'm talking to these small business owners,
- 1:43they're happy with all the things that President Trump's doing,
- 1:45and also what Administrator Loeffler is doing to make sure that we have access to capital
- 1:50that these small businesses desperately need to continue to grow in this thriving economy.
- 1:54You've told us before that a lot of the strength of this economy
- 1:59is in the Southeastern job growth. Is that still true?
- 2:03I believe that's still true.
- 2:04Small businesses that are getting hurt by not-so-friendly states,
- 2:08they're looking for friendly business states, and most of them are in the South.
- 2:11So I have this amazing opportunity to represent eight states in the Southeast,
- 2:15and when it comes to business growth and job opportunities, it's all here.
- 2:19As you guys are a part of Troy Public Radio and Troy University,
- 2:22I want to talk about the student entrepreneurs and how they can actually take advantage of some
- 2:26of this amazing opportunities that we've been seeing across the Southeast,
- 2:30since it's in their backyard.
- 2:31You know, a lot of the students these days are actually military veterans and their spouses.
- 2:37Are they included in this that you're talking about?
- 2:41Of course they are. And you know what?
- 2:42The SBA has a lot when it comes to helping veterans get into business.
- 2:46One of the things we offer is the VBOT, or Boots to Business,
- 2:50where we actually have classes specifically for veterans and military members
- 2:55of how they can transition what they learned in the military into the private sector.
- 2:59In the jobs report, most of the jobs grew in transportation and construction,
- 3:03which has a lot of crossover with what veterans are learning
- 3:06during their time of service in the military.
- 3:09I'm familiar with the small business development centers, many of them based at universities.
- 3:15Is this a source of help for these students,
- 3:18whether they're military veterans or college students?
- 3:21It is. The small business development centers are a great tool that's accessible
- 3:25across every state in the United States.
- 3:27They're tied to the university systems and they're free business consultants
- 3:31that can help businesses start up and grow.
- 3:34And that way, they're actually the tools that these businesses can go to for free.
- 3:38Taxpayer money is already paying for them, so they're a great valuable resource.
- 3:42Are there some opportunities that we may not have thought of?
- 3:47The first thing I like to tell all students that have the dream of being an entrepreneur is
- 3:51there's a lot of great opportunities out there,
- 3:53especially what they're called the silver tsunami
- 3:56that baby boomers like my parents are retiring from the workforce.
- 3:59And there's a bunch of great small businesses that open for 20 plus years
- 4:03that have positive cash flow that are prime for the younger generation to get into
- 4:09and have their dream of entrepreneurship.
- 4:11And that's where the SBA can help because the SBA,
- 4:14we actually work with the banks so that way that the banks can provide loans
- 4:18for these people that are getting into business,
- 4:20they can actually acquire these businesses that are already thriving.
- 4:24And the SBA can help in multiple ways to get people onto that path of entrepreneurship.
- 4:30One of the resources is the sba.gov website.
- 4:35How can that help people get started?
- 4:38I tell everyone that's inspiring to be an entrepreneur,
- 4:41those that already have their own business that you need a team to support you,
- 4:45whether that's your accountant, your attorneys, your marketing team,
- 4:49you also need the Small Business Development Center on your side and the SBA.
- 4:55On the SBA website, you can find so many things.
- 4:58Our learning platform will give you the basics of business and what to look for
- 5:02when you're starting a small business and how you can grow your business.
- 5:05So I encourage everyone to reach out to the SBA.
- 5:08We have district offices all across the state
- 5:10and we're here to help you guys make the right connections you need
- 5:13so that way you can grow your business.
- 5:16Well, Tyler, let's talk about financing a business.
- 5:20Yeah, so a great thing is how the SBA can help you get access to capital.
- 5:25We have a lot of different programs.
- 5:27I actually wrote an op-ed recently.
- 5:29Not every business needs a million dollar loan.
- 5:32Some businesses just need a $50,000 loan
- 5:35and that's where our microloan program comes in.
- 5:38It's a smaller dollar amount and if you use a microloan provider,
- 5:42they actually can help you walk through your business plan
- 5:46and coach you on what you need to be successful.
- 5:49These microloans are tailored to help you with monthly payments that are smaller,
- 5:54that doesn't have a high interest rate.
- 5:56On top of that, you have the community side to it.
- 5:58The person that can actually coach you and make your business successful.
- 6:01That way you can pay back the loans.
- 6:03I always encourage people to go check out the microloan program.
- 6:07They're all across the state.
- 6:08You can find providers of the microloan programs all across your state
- 6:11and they can really help you grow your business.
- 6:13That's a perfect spot for a student entrepreneur that doesn't have a lot of capital,
- 6:18doesn't know exactly what they're doing,
- 6:20but they have a passion and they want to make it work.
- 6:23I always encourage people to check out our microloan program.
- 6:25Once you grow out of the phase of the microloan program
- 6:28and you're looking for a bigger loan,
- 6:30that's where the SBA comes in by helping you become more bankable
- 6:33and we can go loans all the way up to five million dollars.
- 6:36When you're thinking about starting a business,
- 6:39and you've been through this with your family, they started a business.
- 6:44How do you find out whether there is an opportunity out there?
- 6:50People who are going to want your product,
- 6:53how do you find out what is needed and what's feasible?
- 6:58There's a lot of businesses that have high demand,
- 7:01great cash flow and great opportunity that are in front of your door.
- 7:05Think about what they call the boring businesses,
- 7:08laundromats, car washes,
- 7:11things that people can't go without on a daily basis.
- 7:15That's where the opportunity is,
- 7:16especially when all these baby boomers are retiring
- 7:19and there's a lot of opportunity.
- 7:20That's where the younger generation can come in,
- 7:23work with the SBA,
- 7:24work with the small business development center
- 7:26to come up with the business plan,
- 7:28get an SBA-backed loan from their bank
- 7:31and seize the opportunity that's right in front of them.
- 7:33And you know what?
- 7:33Under President Trump and Administrator Loeffler,
- 7:35there's no better time when you look at what just recently happened
- 7:39with the work and family tax cut
- 7:41and all of those opportunities it provides for these entrepreneurs.
- 7:44They're in your community,
- 7:46they're going to give back to your community.
- 7:48And whenever you support a small business,
- 7:50a local entrepreneur, someone that's starting up,
- 7:53all that money comes back.
- 7:55And that's the most important thing about small businesses.
- 7:57They're the thriving heart of the community.
- 7:59So you're talking about taking a team approach
- 8:03step by step as you start your business.
- 8:07You need a team whenever you go into business.
- 8:09The SBA should be a part of your team.
- 8:11We have amazing resources that can help.
- 8:14You can find district offices in your state
- 8:16by if you just Google SBA Alabama,
- 8:19you can find our district team there.
- 8:21Reach out to us.
- 8:22We can provide you to the appropriate resource
- 8:24whether you want to get a government contracting,
- 8:26whether you need a bank to fund your business
- 8:29or whether you're looking for a consultant.
- 8:31Reach out to us.
- 8:32We're happy to help get you directed in the right direction.
- 8:35The resources alone from the sba.gov are a great place to start.
- 8:41And I think more entrepreneurs should realize that
- 8:44you don't always have to pull yourself up by your bootstraps.
- 8:46On top of that, go outside of the SBA, find a mentor,
- 8:49find someone that's already been in business
- 8:51in the same business that you want to get to,
- 8:53ask them questions.
- 8:54There's so many amazing resources out there
- 8:57and we're happy to help you get connected with whoever and whenever.
- 9:01Well, Tyler, I want to thank you for all your advice today.
- 9:04I think you've given your listeners the confidence
- 9:06to maybe take the next step.
