- 1:43Speaker 1: and and and talk their business. They do their business.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Talk with Rashard McDonald on Money Making Conversation my next guest.

- 1:54Speaker 1: he has solidified his status as one of the world's
- 1:56Speaker 1: premier performers. He's an award winning actor and comedian, and writer, producer, director,
- 2:02Speaker 1: and philanthropists whose career spans television, live performances and film.
- 2:07Speaker 1: He's currently starting on the hit TBS sitcom The Neighborhood,
- 2:10Speaker 1: which is TV's number one new comedy and airs on
- 2:14Speaker 1: Monday nights. Please welcome back back back to money making conversation,
- 2:19Speaker 1: Cedric the entertainer shout out, you need all the noise
- 2:27Speaker 1: with shot. We're like, we're in the club. What do
- 2:30Speaker 1: you smoke to come down? Dropped like New Year lead?
- 2:40Speaker 1: And you said New Year's Eve? The them in the
- 2:42Speaker 1: hardest shows to do. Brothers a comedian, The New Year's
- 2:45Speaker 1: Eve show? Who know it? People be did a few
- 2:50Speaker 1: of you know people be drunk already and then they
- 2:53Speaker 1: loud and everybody got a loud outfits. So they and
- 2:57Speaker 1: the outfits loud, and so people don't understand this that
- 3:00Speaker 1: as a comedian, you know, we operate on response. If
- 3:02Speaker 1: you could sing, you can sing through New Year's Eve.
- 3:05Speaker 1: But as a comedian you need people to laugh back
- 3:07Speaker 1: at you. And about fifteen minutes before it's midnight, they
- 3:11Speaker 1: started looking at they watch it, they start planning on you,
- 3:14Speaker 1: and you need them to keep listening to you. So
- 3:17Speaker 1: your biggest check you will ever getting a performer right
- 3:20Speaker 1: central is New Year's Eve. Boy right, that's a big
- 3:24Speaker 1: check of the year. But then like you know, then
- 3:26Speaker 1: he got three folks when the clock just wrong. You
- 3:29Speaker 1: know the counting, it's a level thirty five the first
- 3:35Speaker 1: keep doing all this loud counting. It ain't till thirty
- 3:40Speaker 1: years when you do. When you're in an entertainment business,
- 3:43Speaker 1: there are no guarantees you you're sometimes you're worried about
- 3:47Speaker 1: buying a car, you're worried about buying the house because
- 3:50Speaker 1: that's what that TV show that you got just got
- 3:52Speaker 1: signed up for. It might not last. That that concert
- 3:55Speaker 1: tour people might not come. And uh, and like he
- 3:59Speaker 1: was joking about, you know, when you have a real job,
- 4:01Speaker 1: you've got health insurers, you got deal inshoers, they don't
- 4:04Speaker 1: even have a little retime and playing for you. That's
- 4:06Speaker 1: a nice nest day. Okay, When you're investing yourself, it's
- 4:11Speaker 1: all on you a hundred percent. And when you're investing yourself,
- 4:14Speaker 1: guess what, there's a lot of people waiting on other
- 4:16Speaker 1: checks from you. And that's that's a that's a that's
- 4:19Speaker 1: a powerful statement that a lot of people don't understand.
- 4:21Speaker 1: When you get your point where Cedric is, and then
- 4:24Speaker 1: Cedric is he's a social media influencer, he's a political influencer,
- 4:29Speaker 1: he's a community influencer, and then he's a television stought.
- 4:33Speaker 1: You know he going too He going to Walmart. People
- 4:35Speaker 1: gonn follow him around. In fact, he can't going to
- 4:37Speaker 1: walmarte he said, you go Walmart Centric. You're going there, man,
- 4:49Speaker 1: I'll mean I'll be people. They said, did you ever
- 4:56Speaker 1: tell people? They said, you said, you said no, no.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Now yeah, people when I know you from I said,
- 5:04Speaker 1: I used working a pipelines on the that's like you.
- 5:09Speaker 1: I gotta I gotta talk about a couple of things.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Is that the star on the Hollywood Walker fact? Wow? Manow,
- 5:19Speaker 1: that's a that's a big While I was telling the
- 5:22Speaker 1: story about how when I first came to Hollywood, I
- 5:24Speaker 1: lived a block over from the street where where you know,
- 5:28Speaker 1: right over from where my story is, and I would
- 5:30Speaker 1: of course go up there. That's where all the food
- 5:32Speaker 1: services were and the dry cleaners and all that kind
- 5:35Speaker 1: of stuff. But I would walk up there and look
- 5:37Speaker 1: at names, and you know, you see all these great
- 5:40Speaker 1: stars and be like, yo, you never even imagine, you know,
- 5:46Speaker 1: you see it, but you know those people with that
- 5:48Speaker 1: like like almost like Richard Pryor and and and those
- 5:51Speaker 1: kind of stars. They seem so big that you were like,
- 5:55Speaker 1: oh man, I'd never be up here. You know what
- 5:57Speaker 1: I'm saying. I'm just out here trying to make a living.
- 5:59Speaker 1: You know, you know, do you have that day? Let me,
- 6:02Speaker 1: you know, and to think about some of the things
- 6:04Speaker 1: I've done in my career and and and had that
- 6:07Speaker 1: experience for my family and have people out there was
- 6:10Speaker 1: just awesome, man. And you know, I go by there
- 6:12Speaker 1: every night and make sure ain't nobody keying on it
- 6:15Speaker 1: or nothing, you know, and just you know, just sitting
- 6:19Speaker 1: on that. Just get up, get up. You can't I don't.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I don't know. A little Spider Man constant dude out
- 6:26Speaker 1: there like just fighting somebody over and like, don't you
- 6:29Speaker 1: know you take that down? You take that down the street?
- 6:33Speaker 1: You know Maryland mon rode in with somebody, but somebody
- 6:37Speaker 1: around who can't fight because I fight you fight it. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 6:42Speaker 1: I'm still here. I'm stilling here for myself. I don't
- 6:44Speaker 1: need Martin Stoff he ain't around, so so so then
- 6:51Speaker 1: then you get the street named come on man, another
- 6:57Speaker 1: another beautiful thing. I mean there, I've been doing a
- 7:01Speaker 1: lot of philanthropic workers sat Wood. You know one wee
- 7:05Speaker 1: we got a great uh, we got a great women's
- 7:07Speaker 1: health facility that I got named after my mom at
- 7:10Speaker 1: a great hospital where we do a lot of women's
- 7:12Speaker 1: health work. We've been doing that the last five years.
- 7:16Speaker 1: And uh, you know, a lot of a lot of scholarships,
- 7:18Speaker 1: a lot of kids to college. And then so for
- 7:22Speaker 1: the city to recognize me for those kind of works
- 7:24Speaker 1: and name a street after me was just big, man.
- 7:27Speaker 1: You know, I said, they in a chain away in
- 7:29Speaker 1: my hometown where I came up. That's just a beautiful thing. Man.
- 7:34Speaker 1: But now now it's just not on any street. It's
- 7:37Speaker 1: in front of the new's house that there's a new organization.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah. That was dope. You know, that
- 7:43Speaker 1: was dope because you know that the Capital's got a
- 7:46Speaker 1: great fat house that they built there is right in
- 7:48Speaker 1: the uh the district of the St. Louis University, so
- 7:53Speaker 1: and the and the theater district where the Fox Theater
- 7:56Speaker 1: and how Symphony Hall is in the Black Repertory Theater.
- 8:00Speaker 1: So it's a it's just a really great part of
- 8:03Speaker 1: the city and very strong and so uh, you know,
- 8:06Speaker 1: I'm actually looking to to build a like a reading
- 8:10Speaker 1: center for my mom around that same on my street,
- 8:13Speaker 1: so that I can have something that's actually there. My
- 8:16Speaker 1: mother was a reading specialist, and uh, you know, and
- 8:19Speaker 1: I wanted to be able to honor her and and
- 8:22Speaker 1: and you know, do something that's also related to education. Uh.
- 8:26Speaker 1: And so we're looking to acquire some land there and
- 8:28Speaker 1: develop that project. So that's why I wanted to bring
- 8:31Speaker 1: up the fact that he has a street now. His
- 8:33Speaker 1: street named after him ain't buried over there. His street
- 8:37Speaker 1: is in a very vital, resourceful heart of St. Louis,
- 8:42Speaker 1: a recognized part of St. Louis. You know, Fox thea
- 8:44Speaker 1: They'll just put Fox Theater over there. Fox There is
- 8:47Speaker 1: where people come. That's that's the Fox there sevent I know, Okay,
- 8:52Speaker 1: Fox There's not to our stars who come in to St.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Louis to Fox There them tickets are very high and
- 8:59Speaker 1: so and so you you're making all these moves and
- 9:02Speaker 1: not that the TV show the TV shows in here.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Tell me about that whole feeling, um because you know,
- 9:09Speaker 1: you know, you you're on the last o G. You're
- 9:12Speaker 1: not to start that, but you're successful, man, You're rolling.
- 9:15Speaker 1: And then you get this opportunity now your TV or
- 9:17Speaker 1: another network CBS, you know, not that that that's a
- 9:23Speaker 1: crossover network, you know what I'm saying, CBS. Yeah, So
- 9:28Speaker 1: tell us about that whole process, man, the development of
- 9:30Speaker 1: the show. I mean, you know, well that's the thing
- 9:33Speaker 1: to always trying to tell people that longevity. You know
- 9:36Speaker 1: that mind me of one of King long Chevity has
- 9:40Speaker 1: this place is the ideata of believing in the long run. Man, Like,
- 9:45Speaker 1: you can't necessarily here if you get hits now and
- 9:49Speaker 1: you know somebody have a big hit younger in their career,
- 9:51Speaker 1: you go, but who's what's the best thing about having
- 9:55Speaker 1: a long career? So you know, we you know, from
- 9:58Speaker 1: the Steve Harvey show that was on the w B
- 10:00Speaker 1: to having my show The Soul Man that was on
- 10:04Speaker 1: TV Land, I had never had you know, I did
- 10:07Speaker 1: have said chaining presents on Fox, but I've never had
- 10:11Speaker 1: anything on one of the big networks. I've had deals,
- 10:14Speaker 1: but never and so to you know, to this point
- 10:18Speaker 1: in my life, to have a show on the number
- 10:20Speaker 1: one network with a number one new comedy and to
- 10:23Speaker 1: have that that that the resources of that of that
- 10:26Speaker 1: network behind you. Uh, you see a difference. There is
- 10:30Speaker 1: a there is a vitalization that happens as says, I'm
- 10:34Speaker 1: validated one people like people understand who I am. Now
- 10:38Speaker 1: they get my brand. I didn't really have to change
- 10:41Speaker 1: to do it. I tell the story that's about something
- 10:44Speaker 1: that we all live, gentrification, how neighborhoods are being you know,
- 10:48Speaker 1: you know, uh moved into how things that we've grown
- 10:53Speaker 1: grown up with, and now we had to deal with
- 10:56Speaker 1: the world moving forward. And now you you gotta deal
- 10:59Speaker 1: with the whole foods where your where your hairdresser used
- 11:02Speaker 1: to be, like so right, you know these kind of
- 11:09Speaker 1: things is you know, And I thought it was just
- 11:12Speaker 1: a great place for the show, and so today and
- 11:14Speaker 1: so we just end up making a great partnership and
- 11:16Speaker 1: I'm glad that people they ain't joining the show and
- 11:19Speaker 1: we're having a good time with him. Man, it's just
- 11:21Speaker 1: so true. It's so true. It's so true. It was
- 11:23Speaker 1: so funny because I used to text something from Fifth War.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Fifth Ward is a black community, and so it was
- 11:30Speaker 1: my mom still lives there. Winning then built out of house.
- 11:32Speaker 1: She want move, said you will, Hey, they ain't going right,
- 11:35Speaker 1: So I just built a house around her house. You
- 11:37Speaker 1: know what I'm going Like you know if I just
- 11:39Speaker 1: would tell that down that okay, okay, we're gonna build
- 11:41Speaker 1: a house around your house. Now, I gotta put security
- 11:45Speaker 1: along because everybody looking at the house, everybody looking at hut.
- 11:49Speaker 1: But she refused to move. So they got a big
- 11:52Speaker 1: freeway they put into the neighborhood. And my wife said,
- 11:56Speaker 1: what's what's going on. I said, well, well, my mom's
- 11:59Speaker 1: valued about to go up because because that's what happened.
- 12:04Speaker 1: They don't put a freeway in the black neighborhood because
- 12:06Speaker 1: they like black neighborhoods. They know that. And that's why
- 12:11Speaker 1: you're showing so time That's why you show it so timely, man,
- 12:13Speaker 1: That's why I love it. Yeah, No, and it's and
- 12:17Speaker 1: it's those kinds of things. And in the process is
- 12:19Speaker 1: that you know, we do you know, like of course,
- 12:22Speaker 1: you know, like guys like us, we land opportunities to
- 12:25Speaker 1: live in a big world and operate with a number
- 12:27Speaker 1: of different people and everything doesn't break down the black
- 12:30Speaker 1: and white. So you do realize there's groups of people
- 12:33Speaker 1: out there that if you get to know them as
- 12:36Speaker 1: human beings, you actually enjoy them. And I think the
- 12:39Speaker 1: idea that we separate each other along color lines along uh,
- 12:45Speaker 1: sexual preference, and you don't realize that. Yo, if I
- 12:48Speaker 1: got to notice individual, I would enjoy them as a person.
- 12:52Speaker 1: I would be like, oh, I don't have to judge
- 12:54Speaker 1: you because you look different than me, or you come
- 12:57Speaker 1: from somewhere else. And so that's where we try to
- 13:00Speaker 1: so really encouraging this show. Even though you know, everybody
- 13:04Speaker 1: gotta have tribal kind of pride, you know, pride and
- 13:08Speaker 1: being a black man and and you know, loving black
- 13:11Speaker 1: women and all these kind of things that that makes
- 13:13Speaker 1: us feel prideful, but you don't judge the other. You
- 13:18Speaker 1: don't judge the other because you don't understand it. Try
- 13:21Speaker 1: to understand it and then recognize that you can grow
- 13:23Speaker 1: from those things. So that's what you know, this show
- 13:26Speaker 1: is all about. And so, uh, my character is pretty hardcore.
- 13:30Speaker 1: At first, you know, I'm the archbunker. I'm the dude
- 13:33Speaker 1: that's stuck in my ways and don't won't you no change?
- 13:36Speaker 1: And then I eventually you know, come to get to
- 13:39Speaker 1: notice family and this guy as a as an individual,
- 13:43Speaker 1: and then you see the growth of my character. That's
- 13:46Speaker 1: the Neighborhood on CBS starring my good friend Entertainer. His
- 13:50Speaker 1: characters Calvin Butler, and he currently adds Curley Curley Ads
- 13:56Speaker 1: every Monday night at a pm, seven Central. It's a man.
- 14:00Speaker 1: I appreciate you. I love so many years man watching
- 14:03Speaker 1: each other, and especially watching you because you know you
- 14:06Speaker 1: the face of America. We didn't even talk about Barber Show.
- 14:09Speaker 1: We don't talk about a lot of things. You are iconic, man,
- 14:12Speaker 1: and you absolutely deserve that star on the Hollywood Walker Fame. Okay,
- 14:18Speaker 1: appreciate that dope. All Right, you talked. We'll be right
- 14:25Speaker 1: back with wool from John McDonald and money making conversations.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Don't touch that down. I saw this new story where
- 14:32Speaker 1: burglars were asked how they broke into homes, and the
- 14:34Speaker 1: one thing every burglar did first was knocked on the door,
- 14:38Speaker 1: and if no one answered, they broke in. That's what
- 14:40Speaker 1: sold me on my new Blink x T two cameras.
- 14:43Speaker 1: They detect motion, so if someone gets near my cameras,
- 14:46Speaker 1: I get it to learn on my Blink smartphone app
- 14:48Speaker 1: with a video clip. But even better is the two
- 14:51Speaker 1: way talk feature that lets me talk to whoever is
- 14:53Speaker 1: they're using my phone, from telling the delivery guy where
- 14:56Speaker 1: to leave the package to saying hi to the kids
- 14:59Speaker 1: at the door with Blink cameras, It's like I'm always home.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Blink cameras are wire free, set up in minutes, and
- 15:05Speaker 1: run on two lithium batteries that last up to two years,
- 15:07Speaker 1: and Blink x T two cameras start under a hundred bucks,

- 15:28Speaker 1: is an Amazon company and it works with Alexa. Hi
- 15:34Speaker 1: this RASI McDonald. You're listening to money making conversations. Uh
- 15:38Speaker 1: is my show I created to uh give exposure to
- 15:41Speaker 1: small entrepre entrepreneurs, uh, celebrity CEOs whom we're doing things
- 15:46Speaker 1: outside of their norm. The norm thing they deliver information
- 15:50Speaker 1: about career planning, motivation, financial literacy, and how they lead
- 15:54Speaker 1: the balance life is next person I've known for a
- 15:57Speaker 1: long time. I have known them for a long time.
- 16:00Speaker 1: But Next Test Joint Forces were with retired NFL Hall
- 16:03Speaker 1: of Fame on Michael Strahan and launched s M, a
- 16:07Speaker 1: c entertainment that sports media and culture, a multidimensional talent management, music,
- 16:13Speaker 1: branding and production company. Please work with the money making conversation.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Constance Swartz Marini good morning or good after? Everybody is wow.
- 16:26Speaker 1: I'll tell yourself this is great. This is my staff
- 16:30Speaker 1: called me to say, would you like to intersue? The
- 16:34Speaker 1: name sounds for me? Yes, yes, I want the interview, Yes,
- 16:37Speaker 1: I want the interviewer. How you doing? I'm so good
- 16:41Speaker 1: and I see it's to Dion Sanders steamed morning, and
- 16:44Speaker 1: I'm so happy that Tracy and Dion arngate praise the
- 16:49Speaker 1: Lord on many levels. I love both of them and
- 16:52Speaker 1: I love them even more together. So I told him
- 16:55Speaker 1: that if you listen to the interview, that's all I
- 16:56Speaker 1: talked about two beautiful people. And uh, you played important
- 16:59Speaker 1: role in Dion's career and now you have I think
- 17:02Speaker 1: now you kind of like is you Let's let me
- 17:05Speaker 1: say just right. You know now you are a you've
- 17:08Speaker 1: been a brand maker. Now you kind of like at
- 17:10Speaker 1: the forefront and being recognized as a talent yourself and
- 17:15Speaker 1: producing and you're you're more on the forefront. Now will
- 17:17Speaker 1: I say that? Am I right when staying that? Now? Um?
- 17:21Speaker 1: Very regret regrettably, Yes, I'm starting to come out in
- 17:25Speaker 1: the forefront. I think you probably can relate a little bit,
- 17:30Speaker 1: like we've been behind the bee for many years helping
- 17:33Speaker 1: you know, architect and craft anything talents with and uh.
- 17:38Speaker 1: And I have to give major props to my talent
- 17:41Speaker 1: because they're the ones that have been kicking me in
- 17:43Speaker 1: the behind saying, you know, you've got to get out there.
- 17:45Speaker 1: You've got to get out there, I think, especially with
- 17:47Speaker 1: what's happening in the world, you know, just with with uh,
- 17:50Speaker 1: you know, diversity and gender equality and and uh, just
- 17:55Speaker 1: just as you can tell them. Stuttering a little bit
- 17:57Speaker 1: because I hate talking about myself, but if someone said
- 18:01Speaker 1: to me, you know, think about how it's helping the
- 18:03Speaker 1: people coming after us as well as you know, our company,
- 18:07Speaker 1: and we've got a lot of young people that work
- 18:09Speaker 1: with us here at SMACK who I just love and respect,
- 18:11Speaker 1: and if it's going to help you know, our business
- 18:14Speaker 1: grow and their careers, and this is sort of what's
- 18:16Speaker 1: doing it. So long way to say thank you for
- 18:18Speaker 1: having me, Well, that's what I'm saying is that that's
- 18:21Speaker 1: why I developed the show. You know, I developed the
- 18:23Speaker 1: show and UH because I couldn't I could not stop being,
- 18:26Speaker 1: as they say, famous, you know, people will find you,
- 18:29Speaker 1: people will follow you. And so either you do two things,
- 18:32Speaker 1: you go with the flow, which I decided to go
- 18:35Speaker 1: with the flow and build my brand out and it's
- 18:38Speaker 1: becoming an incredibly the next level, you know. I built
- 18:41Speaker 1: it with Steve and then all of a sudden it
- 18:42Speaker 1: took me like a little bit too nurture and let
- 18:45Speaker 1: everybody know that this is what Sean McDonald's brand. And
- 18:48Speaker 1: now it is going growing exponential. And I feel that's
- 18:52Speaker 1: happening to you because and I'm gonna tell you this constant,
- 18:54Speaker 1: I can tell in your personality there's a difference and
- 18:58Speaker 1: that's a positive thing because you know, your energy level
- 19:01Speaker 1: when we used to talk was a little bit low,
- 19:03Speaker 1: a little bit different, you know, and now it's it
- 19:07Speaker 1: seems to be bigger, and it seems to be more
- 19:10Speaker 1: more um promotional, and because you're willing to talk about
- 19:14Speaker 1: your success story, your your your side of the story,
- 19:17Speaker 1: which is a very important story to be told nowadays. Correct,
- 19:21Speaker 1: thank you? Yeah, I agree, And I think probably um,
- 19:24Speaker 1: as you get older and have a lot of you know,
- 19:26Speaker 1: trials and tribulations and failures which you can turn into success,
- 19:31Speaker 1: it um brings I think a level of confidence and
- 19:34Speaker 1: maybe some calmness. And you know, this is a big
- 19:37Speaker 1: step for me because I'm going to be fifty in
- 19:39Speaker 1: a couple of weeks and you look fantastic. You know
- 19:42Speaker 1: you look fantastic, right I don't, but thank you for
- 19:47Speaker 1: saying it. I'll uh. I think when I'm fifty in
- 19:50Speaker 1: one day, I'm gonna own it and I'm going to
- 19:52Speaker 1: just say the heck with it and it is what
- 19:54Speaker 1: it is. And I think that's a lot of what
- 19:56Speaker 1: transfers over into sort of you know, the business of
- 19:59Speaker 1: it all. It's just also finding some confidence in your
- 20:02Speaker 1: looks too. Is you're about to turn this milestone birthday. Well,
- 20:06Speaker 1: you know, I did a big video that were viral
- 20:09Speaker 1: about not to have an age as an excuse. You
- 20:12Speaker 1: know that you can do whatever you want to do,
- 20:14Speaker 1: whatever age you are. And a lot of people when
- 20:16Speaker 1: they hit a certain platform with it's fifty or sixty,
- 20:19Speaker 1: they feel this is it. I can't dream anymore, I
- 20:22Speaker 1: can't play anymore. And I know that when I'm looking
- 20:25Speaker 1: at your what you're doing now, it's this guy's the limit.
- 20:30Speaker 1: Now you might be turning fifty, but wow, you're gonna
- 20:33Speaker 1: be busy to your hundred hopefully not. I'm trying to
- 20:37Speaker 1: figure out when this retirement plan is going to happen.
- 20:40Speaker 1: It's you know, it's not. I know everyone says, who
- 20:44Speaker 1: are you kidding? You're not a lunching uh lady, you know,
- 20:47Speaker 1: shopping type of person. And I know, deep down that's
- 20:50Speaker 1: the truth. And and I think you know, spiritually and
- 20:53Speaker 1: and just my soul and my spirit, I definitely don't
- 20:56Speaker 1: feel fifty. And I also think you know that you're
- 20:59Speaker 1: there's truth and what you're saying is I'm just getting started. Okay,
- 21:02Speaker 1: before we get to the management company, they sent me
- 21:05Speaker 1: some recent interviews, you know, because I and these some
- 21:08Speaker 1: of the titles of the interviews that they said, what
- 21:11Speaker 1: is really like to be a female boss in the
- 21:13Speaker 1: male dominated industry? That was one title, how to make
- 21:16Speaker 1: it as a woman in an NFL. And then the
- 21:19Speaker 1: one I really like is uh uh conscerant swarts Marina
- 21:22Speaker 1: on why she works ten time harder than members of
- 21:25Speaker 1: the Lucky sparm Club. That's my favorite. That's my favorite.
- 21:35Speaker 1: Oh my goodness. That was one of my first interviews
- 21:37Speaker 1: when I realized that they're always going to pull that
- 21:40Speaker 1: one line out that you don't realize as you're saying,
- 21:42Speaker 1: is that it's a little little polarizing maybe, but it's
- 21:47Speaker 1: the truth. Well that's why, that's why I got you
- 21:51Speaker 1: on the phone, because of the fact that you know
- 21:53Speaker 1: a lot of it's the device show. It's an informational show.
- 21:56Speaker 1: It's a show about what can you do? And you know, uh,
- 22:01Speaker 1: men dominate this business and sometimes women, attractive women can
- 22:05Speaker 1: be perceived as just attractive women, and you have to
- 22:09Speaker 1: fight even harder to get your voice heard. As you know,
- 22:12Speaker 1: for as you know, you are an attractive young lady
- 22:15Speaker 1: and so and so you can't run from that. But
- 22:17Speaker 1: you also shouldn't be held held uh that is the
- 22:20Speaker 1: negative and and be treated a certain way. And tell
- 22:25Speaker 1: me about that journey a little bit of being able
- 22:27Speaker 1: to get your voice in this business, because you're still
- 22:29Speaker 1: getting it, just like I'm still getting my voice of
- 22:31Speaker 1: being a female in this business. And you know, it's
- 22:34Speaker 1: male dominated. It started from me back in my twenties
- 22:39Speaker 1: when I was at the NFL, and I realized that
- 22:42Speaker 1: a lot of times, because you're saying it you are
- 22:44Speaker 1: an attractive female, people look at you differently. They don't
- 22:47Speaker 1: want to hear what you have to say, Um, nothing
- 22:50Speaker 1: against you know, attractive women that are pursuing, you know,
- 22:53Speaker 1: a business as a cheerleader, which I think is a
- 22:55Speaker 1: very lucrative business. But that wasn't my past. And so
- 22:58Speaker 1: when you just I think it differently when you're trying
- 23:01Speaker 1: to be the person that's commanding the room, I dressed differently.
- 23:05Speaker 1: I mean I was wearing clothes a size too big
- 23:07Speaker 1: for me. You know, I wasn't being myself. I was
- 23:10Speaker 1: you know, oversized golf shirts when we're at our events,
- 23:12Speaker 1: because you wanted to be taken seriously. And I think
- 23:15Speaker 1: there was a moment that came where I had a
- 23:19Speaker 1: really successful event and my boss at the time acknowledged
- 23:22Speaker 1: it and started really paying attention to me and giving me,
- 23:26Speaker 1: you know, the confidence and and just I gets the
- 23:28Speaker 1: power and the respect to walk into a room and
- 23:31Speaker 1: command that seat at the table. And it was that
- 23:34Speaker 1: defining moment for me where I was like, you know what,
- 23:36Speaker 1: I'm going to show up in my jeans and my
- 23:37Speaker 1: sports coat, Like I'm gonna show up at these events
- 23:40Speaker 1: and wearing my heels and not worry about being in
- 23:42Speaker 1: in flat shoes and baggy khakis. And it sounds stupid,
- 23:47Speaker 1: but mentally it meant so much to say this is
- 23:51Speaker 1: who I am and this is who I'm going to be,
- 23:53Speaker 1: and you know, take it or leave it. Basically, you know,
- 23:56Speaker 1: I just didn't believe that because of the fact that
- 23:59Speaker 1: you know, even I like to dress. And this is
- 24:03Speaker 1: not nowhere close to your conversation, but it is about
- 24:06Speaker 1: perception and what people can say, how are you supposed
- 24:09Speaker 1: to look? And when I was right, I mean my
- 24:11Speaker 1: early years of writing, when everybody will come in blue
- 24:13Speaker 1: jeans and T shirt, like come in in the suit
- 24:14Speaker 1: or vest or tie, and they will go, why are
- 24:17Speaker 1: you dressing like that? I said, because I like dressing
- 24:19Speaker 1: like that. So people will will say there's a standard
- 24:22Speaker 1: and the way you're supposed to look and where you're
- 24:24Speaker 1: supposed to act, and it will treat you accordingly. Well,
- 24:27Speaker 1: I fought, I fought in, held onto my values and
- 24:29Speaker 1: that's all you're saying. Hold on to your values, hold
- 24:32Speaker 1: on to you oho you are and you have a career.
- 24:36Speaker 1: But if you succumb to the circumstances what people tell
- 24:39Speaker 1: you should look like, or you'd be comparing or with
- 24:42Speaker 1: what other females think about how you're moving up the
- 24:45Speaker 1: success ladder. Then that can hold you back and cause
- 24:48Speaker 1: you to be not not reap the benefits of your talent.
- 24:51Speaker 1: And that's what you said. You just said, Hey, I
- 24:54Speaker 1: this is who I am. Okay, deal with it, And
- 24:57Speaker 1: that's basically what you're saying in this interview. Correct a
- 25:00Speaker 1: thousand percent. You said its way more eloquently than I did.
- 25:03Speaker 1: But you've got that right, and you know, and it's
- 25:05Speaker 1: it continues and it still carries on. And you know,
- 25:07Speaker 1: when I was managing Snoop half the time, you know,
- 25:11Speaker 1: I'm dealing with other managers that just assumed that I
- 25:15Speaker 1: was not the person making the decisions. And in the beginning,
- 25:18Speaker 1: I think Snoop didn't think I was serious, and I'm like, watch,
- 25:22Speaker 1: they're not paying any attention to me. He's like, you're crazy,
- 25:24Speaker 1: And sure enough, like there was we were I forget
- 25:27Speaker 1: where we were, but at an event and someone was
- 25:29Speaker 1: pitching him on a big idea and they just completely
- 25:32Speaker 1: ignored me, looked down on me. So I just walked
- 25:34Speaker 1: away from the conversation. And at the end of it,
- 25:36Speaker 1: the guy was like, well, where's your manager so I
- 25:37Speaker 1: can hit him up and you know, close the deal,
- 25:39Speaker 1: and Snoop just started laughing. He said, you know the
- 25:41Speaker 1: woman that was just standing here, and the guy was
- 25:43Speaker 1: like mm hmmm, and he said, that's the manager. Good luck, brother.
- 25:50Speaker 1: And I think that's such a key thing is that
- 25:52Speaker 1: I've always had the support of my clients, you know,
- 25:54Speaker 1: whether it's Dion or stray Hand or Snoop or with Khalifa.
- 25:58Speaker 1: I think that's so important that they're the ones that
- 26:01Speaker 1: are just helping because I say it all the time, Yes,
- 26:04Speaker 1: women need to lift women up, but without the support
- 26:07Speaker 1: of the men we work with, it's a feudal effort.
- 26:10Speaker 1: And and that's the thing something that people are starting
- 26:12Speaker 1: to realize is it's it's good to help each other.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Like we all succeed, we win as a team, we
- 26:17Speaker 1: lose as a team. You know, that's a big ethos
- 26:20Speaker 1: for us here at SMACK is if you don't play
- 26:23Speaker 1: your position, we're not gonna win. And no matter if
- 26:26Speaker 1: you're the person getting someone a coffee or a Starbucks
- 26:30Speaker 1: or a tea, or you're the person that's working on
- 26:32Speaker 1: the budget for the next big television show, everyone has
- 26:35Speaker 1: an important role. He constance. Here's here's a deal. First
- 26:39Speaker 1: of all, we connected, um, I want to tell your
- 26:43Speaker 1: story more. I hope you have to help your time
- 26:45Speaker 1: in the future. I'm not gonna bug you next month,
- 26:47Speaker 1: but I want to bring you back on and I
- 26:49Speaker 1: would love it and let's talk because everybody just do
- 26:53Speaker 1: you blown away by your story because that's why I
- 26:55Speaker 1: wanted to bring you on the show. Because you're so strong,
- 26:57Speaker 1: You're you, You're dynamic like what I'm saying. You know
- 27:01Speaker 1: you're tough guy. You are Ray Donovan, the female version
- 27:05Speaker 1: without the murders. Get you suit up, We'll do that. Bye.
- 27:16Speaker 1: I saw this new story where burglars were asked how
- 27:19Speaker 1: they broke into homes, and the one thing every burglar
- 27:22Speaker 1: did first was knocked on the door, and if no
- 27:24Speaker 1: one answered, they broke in. That's what sold me on
- 27:26Speaker 1: my new Blink x T two cameras. They detect motion,
- 27:30Speaker 1: so if someone gets near my cameras, a get to
- 27:32Speaker 1: learn on my Blink smartphone app with a video clip.

- 27:38Speaker 1: lets me talk to whoever is they're using my phone,
- 27:41Speaker 1: from telling the delivery guy where to leave the package
- 27:43Speaker 1: to saying hi to the kids at the door. With
- 27:45Speaker 1: Blink cameras, it's like I'm always home Blink cameras or

- 28:55Speaker 1: Rashan McDonald will use his business and celebrity relationships to
- 28:59Speaker 1: empower all businesses with information to succeed. Nice time, showtime,
- 29:19Speaker 1: as they say, and what we do in this business.
- 29:22Speaker 1: I have a lot to talk about with my next
- 29:24Speaker 1: guest today. She is an Emmy Award winning TV and
- 29:27Speaker 1: film producer and entrepreneur. She is currently producing a very
- 29:31Speaker 1: hot show for BT entitled Games Diva's Play, a sexy
- 29:36Speaker 1: stylized drama about the high stakes world of the NBA
- 29:39Speaker 1: from the female perspective. She has a very popular lifestyle,
- 29:44Speaker 1: health and wellness website called all Right Now, All right
- 29:47Speaker 1: now dot com. Please welcome to money Making Conversation again
- 29:51Speaker 1: because I helped our lunch all right now dot com.
- 29:54Speaker 1: Tracy Evarts for having me back on. It's always so
- 30:02Speaker 1: much fun to talk to you. Well, it's great. Uh,
- 30:04Speaker 1: first of all, always a fan of just just you
- 30:07Speaker 1: as a mentor to women in general, your leader. Uh,
- 30:12Speaker 1: nothing but great things come up when they talk about
- 30:14Speaker 1: your brand and the brand that you consistently promote and
- 30:17Speaker 1: get out there with quality shows. And I think that's
- 30:20Speaker 1: really the key with choose quality, right, And that's the
- 30:22Speaker 1: point of view that you you you you strive for
- 30:24Speaker 1: correct well, you know absolutely and I was gonna say, Um,
- 30:28Speaker 1: by the way, we changed and we updated the name
- 30:31Speaker 1: of our show. It's called Games People Play. Now, okay cool,
- 30:35Speaker 1: but yeah, but you're right because it was based on
- 30:36Speaker 1: the book Games Diva's Play and m right exactly exactly
- 30:42Speaker 1: as editor as my Girl. Now that's my girl too.
- 30:45Speaker 1: And this is the second project that we've done together.
- 30:48Speaker 1: So we did another movie for Lifetime, the one called
- 30:50Speaker 1: With This Ring that was based on her first book, Everybody,
- 30:55Speaker 1: Here we go again. Um, but yeah, Rishan, you'r app
- 31:00Speaker 1: the really right. It's like it's all about you know,
- 31:02Speaker 1: quality control, you know everything that you do, every project
- 31:06Speaker 1: that I work on, and you know, paying attention to
- 31:09Speaker 1: detail on everything. And so for me as a producer,
- 31:14Speaker 1: I'm hands on. I'm not phoning it in. There are
- 31:17Speaker 1: a lot of people that you'll see in Hollywood that
- 31:19Speaker 1: will put their name on a show. Um, and networks
- 31:23Speaker 1: will pay people to executive produce and especially celebrities and
- 31:26Speaker 1: put their name on a show. They'll get a check,
- 31:28Speaker 1: but they're not involved in the production at all. And
- 31:32Speaker 1: you know, I'm quite the opposite. I'm like, they're you know,
- 31:36Speaker 1: picking wardrobe, you know, approving hair and makeup, you know,
- 31:42Speaker 1: interviewing the directors, interviewing the department heads, you know, giving
- 31:47Speaker 1: script notes, giving editorial notes. You know. I will be
- 31:51Speaker 1: involved in all the marketing and promotion you know as well.
- 31:54Speaker 1: But you know, quality control over everything that I put
- 31:57Speaker 1: my name on is really really important because I want
- 32:00Speaker 1: I wanted to be the best, and I want people
- 32:01Speaker 1: to be excited about what they're watching. And that's important
- 32:04Speaker 1: because I'm gonna just tell everybody that's generally what happens
- 32:07Speaker 1: with all the big producers, and she falls in line
- 32:10Speaker 1: with the big producers or I'm talking about J. J.
- 32:13Speaker 1: Abrahams and all these individuals, and that's why they tend
- 32:15Speaker 1: to see the same nothing negative about They will care
- 32:18Speaker 1: the same producers, same quality people on and sometimes they
- 32:22Speaker 1: care the same actors and actresses to different projects. And
- 32:25Speaker 1: that's called relationship. People. You can trust people understand your direction.
- 32:30Speaker 1: That won't be sitting over the tripping, won't come out
- 32:32Speaker 1: to trailer when they told him come out to trailer
- 32:34Speaker 1: when we're talking about I gotta ride, I need black
- 32:37Speaker 1: jelly beans only. This is this is, this is why
- 32:41Speaker 1: you get shows done correctly, She laughing. You don't telling
- 32:44Speaker 1: the truth. And now you are. It's so funny, but
- 32:47Speaker 1: you know what, I am so blessed and it's like
- 32:50Speaker 1: with this project and you know, the other movies and
- 32:53Speaker 1: shows that I've worked on, I honestly can say I've
- 32:56Speaker 1: never had like any of the diva demands that you
- 32:58Speaker 1: read about everybody. It's always one love. We're always we
- 33:03Speaker 1: operate like family, and and that's true, you know with
- 33:07Speaker 1: this cast, you know we you know, Lauren London has
- 33:09Speaker 1: become like my little sister. She's our she's our Vanessa King.
- 33:14Speaker 1: And you know Parker mckennem posey, you know, she's another
- 33:18Speaker 1: beautiful actress, is one of our co leagues. And you
- 33:20Speaker 1: guys are gonna remember her because she was on the
- 33:22Speaker 1: TV show My Wife and Kids and she has a
- 33:24Speaker 1: world girl you have all grown up now and so
- 33:28Speaker 1: um Karen Obel, Um, you know she's our third female lead.
- 33:32Speaker 1: She's awesome. She's our little chocolate princess. Just gorgeous, gorgeous girl.
- 33:37Speaker 1: And um, and I love me some. Sharonas Jackson. You
- 33:40Speaker 1: know who's playing Marcus King are NBA baller who you
- 33:44Speaker 1: know has some some cheating issues and he's awesome. Jackie
- 33:51Speaker 1: long Um, he's playing our Marcus King's best friend Kareem
- 33:55Speaker 1: who went to college with him, and and Jackie and
- 33:58Speaker 1: I've known each other as friends for years and we've
- 34:00Speaker 1: been like dying to work together on some things. So
- 34:02Speaker 1: we're finally doing this, um. But we've got some, you know,
- 34:05Speaker 1: also some great supporting casts. You know, Barry Brewers, a
- 34:08Speaker 1: stand up comedian and this is his first real role
- 34:12Speaker 1: on a TV show and he's killing it. Kendall Kendall
- 34:16Speaker 1: who a lot of people may follow from social media.
- 34:19Speaker 1: He's got a huge Instagram following. This is his first
- 34:22Speaker 1: role as well. Um. And then you know, Vanessa Bell
- 34:26Speaker 1: Calloway's on the show and that's the sentient veteran. So
- 34:32Speaker 1: we've got a really fun cast and it's really it
- 34:35Speaker 1: shows in there. Now let me ask you this, so, uh,
- 34:38Speaker 1: Angela Burt Murray, whould I know, many years with Essence
- 34:42Speaker 1: and then she left Essence to pursue a writing career,
- 34:45Speaker 1: and now this is the second project that you're doing
- 34:48Speaker 1: with the name of the TV show is called Games
- 34:50Speaker 1: People Play, but it is derived from the book Games.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Diva's play helped me. What is about her concept of
- 34:57Speaker 1: her creative balance that works with you? You know what
- 35:01Speaker 1: both of us, Um, you know, I'll just say both
- 35:04Speaker 1: of us. A are industry veterans. Like I mean, I've
- 35:08Speaker 1: known Angela for years, you know, when she was the
- 35:10Speaker 1: editor of Essence magazine. You know, Angela started those Essence
- 35:14Speaker 1: women luncheons and you know, it was responsible for the
- 35:17Speaker 1: Essence music, fast and stuff. So you know, you're talking
- 35:20Speaker 1: to a really really bright visionary. And so when Angela
- 35:25Speaker 1: segued into becoming an author and stuff, you know, she
- 35:28Speaker 1: and I remained friends, you know, and carried our friendship
- 35:32Speaker 1: on into doing some business together. And so she brought
- 35:35Speaker 1: to me her book, The Vow, you know, that she
- 35:39Speaker 1: wanted to adapt into a movie, and so The Vale
- 35:42Speaker 1: became with this Ring for Lifetime. And you know, I
- 35:46Speaker 1: just a you know, she's got really strong, uh female
- 35:51Speaker 1: pieces that you know, she's she's great at this, the
- 35:54Speaker 1: soapy drama, the juicy, scandalous stuff in her book which
- 36:00Speaker 1: make delicious TV watching, you know. And so and these
- 36:04Speaker 1: characters that she creates, like are so memorable and diabolical
- 36:10Speaker 1: that they you know that they can carry on, you know,
- 36:13Speaker 1: passed the book into a series and you want to
- 36:16Speaker 1: see more and more of what are these characters going
- 36:19Speaker 1: to do next and so um, so hence, you know,
- 36:22Speaker 1: she after we did with this rain together, She's like, Okay,
- 36:25Speaker 1: let's let's do my next book. And so I read
- 36:28Speaker 1: games Diva's play on an airplane and you know, get
- 36:32Speaker 1: it's just like such a fun dive into this world
- 36:36Speaker 1: of the n B A yeah, and you know, people
- 36:38Speaker 1: are fascinated about what goes on behind the scenes of
- 36:41Speaker 1: the NBA, which is why you go on social media.
- 36:44Speaker 1: And you know when Carmelo and La La, I mean, yeah,
- 36:48Speaker 1: we're going through all their drama from the page. You
- 36:51Speaker 1: you may be like a Law and Order torn from
- 36:54Speaker 1: the actual page areas people play, Yes, I know. And
- 37:01Speaker 1: then you know Vanessa and Kobe Bryant, you know, so
- 37:04Speaker 1: everybody's fascinated by what goes on in that world. And
- 37:07Speaker 1: that's what we're really exploring. We're just proving to be
- 37:10Speaker 1: the most the favorite uh destination on your website right
- 37:13Speaker 1: now all right now dot com. Well you know what, um,
- 37:16Speaker 1: A lot of stuff, A lot of the articles that
- 37:19Speaker 1: I write myself, you know, for whatever reason, probably because
- 37:22Speaker 1: it is my my website, attract the clicks or the
- 37:25Speaker 1: videos that I that I do, or even like I
- 37:28Speaker 1: even post you know, interviews press interviews that I do
- 37:30Speaker 1: because I talk about a lot of lifestyle issues, like
- 37:33Speaker 1: I'm doing right now with you, and so I'll post
- 37:35Speaker 1: the interviews and stuff on the website. So I think
- 37:38Speaker 1: a lot of people are curious to hear what I
- 37:42Speaker 1: have to say from a testimonial space, and so like
- 37:45Speaker 1: they'll want to know, like, well, what are you doing,
- 37:48Speaker 1: you know, to live your best life? You know, what
- 37:50Speaker 1: are you doing, what are your your your daily routines,
- 37:53Speaker 1: you know, what are you doing you know, towards a
- 37:55Speaker 1: healthy relationship? And so the articles that I kind of
- 37:59Speaker 1: rite in the videos that do myself probably I would say,
- 38:02Speaker 1: attract the most clicks and stuff. But you know, but
- 38:05Speaker 1: it's nice because you can kind of like through analytics,
- 38:07Speaker 1: you can kind of see then there's links from, you know,
- 38:10Speaker 1: from one of my articles to another article with a
- 38:13Speaker 1: similar you know subject matter and stuff. But um, it's
- 38:17Speaker 1: really it's it's creating like a community and a movement
- 38:20Speaker 1: because even like you know, Rashana post a lot of
- 38:23Speaker 1: yoga you know videos and yoga articles, and I've had
- 38:27Speaker 1: so many people that have written to me to say, hey,
- 38:30Speaker 1: you inspired me to do yoga, absolutely, and and it's
- 38:33Speaker 1: changed my life, you know. And and that's what this
- 38:36Speaker 1: website is all about, is really getting people to kind
- 38:39Speaker 1: of gravitate towards a healthy lifestyle. And and even if
- 38:42Speaker 1: I change one life, you know, like mission accomplished. And
- 38:45Speaker 1: that's why I was told you. You know, my staff
- 38:47Speaker 1: reached out to you for January to start making it
- 38:50Speaker 1: an annual or a monthly part of my newsletter because
- 38:54Speaker 1: of the fact that you know, the dominant are my
- 38:56Speaker 1: followers or female and so O two. I want them
- 39:00Speaker 1: to start seeing it as a part of my newsletter
- 39:03Speaker 1: on a monthly basis, and they start becoming a clickable
- 39:06Speaker 1: visually a lot of people look at so what is that?
- 39:08Speaker 1: And if you keep showing it to them, eventually going
- 39:10Speaker 1: to click. And so know that you're You're part of
- 39:13Speaker 1: my my world, a part of what I'm trying to
- 39:16Speaker 1: change it. And so that all right now dot com
- 39:18Speaker 1: It's gonna go out every month, not just the first
- 39:20Speaker 1: quarter when people are pushing social health change and health
- 39:23Speaker 1: awareness and Brandon that get fit now type philosophy twelve months,
- 39:29Speaker 1: twelve times I'm putting you out in my newsletter. You know,
- 39:32Speaker 1: I didn't even realize you you were doing that. Thank
- 39:34Speaker 1: you so much. That is like, that's that's part of
- 39:36Speaker 1: you know, creating a movement, and I really appreciate your support.
- 39:39Speaker 1: That's awesome. Absolutely, And before we go, I want to
- 39:42Speaker 1: talk about this new deal at X t X Entertainment.
- 39:44Speaker 1: Philisate on what that is. Well, S t X is
- 39:47Speaker 1: a global multimedia company and a lot of people don't
- 39:51Speaker 1: realize it, but they S t X is behind some
- 39:54Speaker 1: of the biggest it's the studio and a global studio,
- 39:57Speaker 1: and they do TV, they do film, they make video games,
- 40:02Speaker 1: they do subscription channels, and they are global. They're all
- 40:06Speaker 1: over the world. Um, they just did a two picture
- 40:08Speaker 1: deal with Kevin Hart. They did his movie Up the
- 40:11Speaker 1: Upside I think it was called, which was the number
- 40:12Speaker 1: one movie a few weeks ago dollars in the box office.
- 40:16Speaker 1: There you go. Yes, And so I have what's called
- 40:19Speaker 1: the first look deal with st X and so um
- 40:21Speaker 1: so Edmonds Entertainment, my production company, is in partnership with
- 40:25Speaker 1: st X now and so I'm actually pitching it to
- 40:28Speaker 1: them TV ideas and the scripted non scripted space movie ideas.
- 40:34Speaker 1: St X and I are actually building a huge, uh
- 40:38Speaker 1: subscription channel, which we haven't announced yet. I can't can't
- 40:41Speaker 1: announce it this yet, but it's something really groundbreaking in
- 40:44Speaker 1: the vein of Netflix, but something with a specific twist
- 40:48Speaker 1: to it and focus to it. UM. But we're you know,
- 40:52Speaker 1: it's it's amazing because the UM Robert Simons, who is
- 40:56Speaker 1: the CEO of st X, is really supportive and it's
- 40:59Speaker 1: like having the most amazing playground now to you to
- 41:03Speaker 1: explore ideas with. And so it's it's pretty awesome. Our
- 41:06Speaker 1: first project that we're doing together is you know, Games
- 41:10Speaker 1: People Play. They're actually providing production services for that. Now
- 41:14Speaker 1: here's the deal. Recap. The show Games People are produced
- 41:17Speaker 1: by your company. You're exactly producing, got your hands and
- 41:20Speaker 1: everything from cater and the casting to the to the

- 41:26Speaker 1: background about it is in my monthly newsletter Raean McDonald
- 41:29Speaker 1: Morley newsletter goals out to tour in thirty thousand fans

- 41:49Speaker 1: story where burglars were asked how they broke into homes

- 41:55Speaker 1: on the door, and if no one answered, they broke in.
- 41:57Speaker 1: That's what sold me on my new Blink XT to cameras.

- 43:46Speaker 1: I am. I am in Dallas, Texas. I'm a Texas boy,
- 43:50Speaker 1: so you're in my country. Huston Texas. I'll be good myself.
- 43:56Speaker 1: It's a big state. Now, I gotta be good. You
- 43:57Speaker 1: gotta be really big and good. Okay, what tell me
- 44:01Speaker 1: what do you. Let's let's talk about when I was
- 44:05Speaker 1: running and I co created the Steve Harvey Morning Show.
- 44:09Speaker 1: Glory Foods advertised to UH several years on the show,
- 44:14Speaker 1: UH the Neighborhood a War. Joe were one of the
- 44:16Speaker 1: key sponsors for the Neighborhood Wars that we did in
- 44:18Speaker 1: Las Vegas, So I'm very familiar with the product. I
- 44:21Speaker 1: bought the product in stores. Tell us about how the
- 44:24Speaker 1: whole Glory Food concept started and then became a major
- 44:28Speaker 1: player in the on the shelves of various grocery stores
- 44:31Speaker 1: throughout this country. Well, it all started with UM four
- 44:37Speaker 1: people that worked together in the food business in the
- 44:40Speaker 1: department store. I was the only female and I was
- 44:44Speaker 1: right out of the NBA program from Indiana University, had
- 44:47Speaker 1: been a banker for a few years. But UM, the
- 44:50Speaker 1: guys came to me after we had worked together that Iris,
- 44:54Speaker 1: we need your marketing expertise. We need to figure out
- 44:57Speaker 1: a way to get soul food in the grocery stores
- 45:00Speaker 1: because Ortega has the Hispanic market and Latoy has a
- 45:05Speaker 1: Chinese market, but there's no soul food. Well, my mama
- 45:08Speaker 1: was from Mississippi and I remember her spending all day
- 45:13Speaker 1: keep cleaning greens, clipping them, massaging them, season and the cooking.
- 45:19Speaker 1: And I'm alowed, I'm not doing that. I work every day,
- 45:24Speaker 1: I got kids, I got stuff to do. I said,
- 45:27Speaker 1: we got to find a way to xpite that process
- 45:30Speaker 1: if if you're going to have me involved, and and
- 45:34Speaker 1: so they said, well, I don't know how to do that.
- 45:35Speaker 1: And I said, well, we're going to have to find
- 45:37Speaker 1: out how to do that, because the woman in the
- 45:40Speaker 1: eighties was not interested in spending four or five hours
- 45:43Speaker 1: working on greens. And so I said, here's what we're
- 45:48Speaker 1: gonna do. You all work on the technology. I'll work
- 45:51Speaker 1: on the marketing and branding. And I did marketing research.
- 45:56Speaker 1: I looked into the process of reaching black women who
- 46:00Speaker 1: were in the workforce at the time and created the work,
- 46:04Speaker 1: the business plan, the branding. And then while I was
- 46:07Speaker 1: doing that, they were working on how to preseason vegetables
- 46:13Speaker 1: before they're cooked in a can and then cooked them
- 46:16Speaker 1: all together in a mass production fashion. And the next
- 46:21Speaker 1: thing we know is we are in front of Kroger,
- 46:26Speaker 1: my partner, Bill Williams, and myself and I did a
- 46:29Speaker 1: presentation to the buyers. All men, no power point, no
- 46:34Speaker 1: overhead projector not even a handout, And I was just
- 46:38Speaker 1: talking about this niche of why we had to exercise
- 46:41Speaker 1: the option right now, how powerful it would be, and
- 46:45Speaker 1: it would reach black women all over the country. And
- 46:49Speaker 1: so after I asked for questions, all they said was,
- 46:53Speaker 1: we're in. We're going to send you in order, and
- 46:56Speaker 1: let me tell you something. With Sean, it was just talk.
- 47:00Speaker 1: We didn't have the product, and we sat out in
- 47:05Speaker 1: front of the Kroger regional office not knowing whether to
- 47:09Speaker 1: laugh or cry because we had nothing. And so we
- 47:14Speaker 1: were on an accelerated pace to come up with this
- 47:18Speaker 1: product so we could deliver. So it took us two
- 47:21Speaker 1: years to get through FDA approval with this new disruptive
- 47:25Speaker 1: cooking process, and Kroger waited. Kroger waited for us. We
- 47:30Speaker 1: debuted in Columbus in the inner City, and our next
- 47:33Speaker 1: stop was Atlanta. Now now it was headquarters where in Columbus,
- 47:39Speaker 1: Ohio and right in the hood Columbus, Ohio. And how
- 47:43Speaker 1: did the name Glory Foods come about? How did that
- 47:45Speaker 1: name come out? Well? I knew it had to be
- 47:48Speaker 1: a name to have some versatility and flexibility. It also
- 47:52Speaker 1: had to resonate with the black community and I don't
- 47:56Speaker 1: know how many times we say glory in a in
- 47:58Speaker 1: a week's time. We say it all the time, whether
- 48:02Speaker 1: it's in reference glory, Gloria, b yeah, yesterday, glory to God. Yes.
- 48:08Speaker 1: So that name, plus it was so flexible. It was
- 48:12Speaker 1: in the movie with Denzel Washington, it was in so
- 48:16Speaker 1: many hymnos and in the Bible. That absolutely so when
- 48:21Speaker 1: we got that name and saw that was available, we
- 48:24Speaker 1: jumped on it. Well that was smart and so so
- 48:28Speaker 1: so that was like you put there what they call
- 48:30Speaker 1: the chicken before the call, which became first egg of
- 48:33Speaker 1: the chicken. Yea, the train took off the train, so
- 48:39Speaker 1: you got out there, miss fancy talker, Miss fancy talker
- 48:42Speaker 1: went out. There's talk in front of those mans, all
- 48:44Speaker 1: those big old words, and they said sold yea. When
- 48:47Speaker 1: I said all wrong, grow African American people in front
- 48:51Speaker 1: of the building crime Fryan said, m So, with that
- 48:58Speaker 1: being said, what is the next up in there? Because
- 49:00Speaker 1: you know this is a major we're talking about food,
- 49:04Speaker 1: you're talking about manufacturing, and you're talking about kenning. You're
- 49:07Speaker 1: talking about also the whole process of being able to
- 49:11Speaker 1: make it taste good like Grandma cooker, your mama cooked it.
- 49:14Speaker 1: And also, did you guys already have lined up the
- 49:18Speaker 1: selections yams, black eyed peas, pento beans, greens? Are you
- 49:23Speaker 1: just had a couple of them? Because I know that
- 49:25Speaker 1: it always has to be sampled out by by, you know,
- 49:28Speaker 1: by people just say this tastes really good. Tell us
- 49:31Speaker 1: about that process. Well, Atlanta was the place that we
- 49:35Speaker 1: went to test the recipes. I held a focus group
- 49:39Speaker 1: with some of my contacts in the Atlanta market before
- 49:42Speaker 1: we actually went with the product line, and I got
- 49:46Speaker 1: really really positive responses. So you have to do your
- 49:50Speaker 1: marketing research before you jump out there and make that
- 49:52Speaker 1: kind of investment. And after we got the feedback from
- 49:56Speaker 1: Atlanta and from Columbus, Ohio, which is a more conservative
- 49:59Speaker 1: mark get, we knew we were onto something. And then
- 50:02Speaker 1: we began to sample the product in various retail outlets.
- 50:07Speaker 1: Um And just just to be clear, your path to
- 50:11Speaker 1: commercialization is not going to be a straight line. You're
- 50:16Speaker 1: going to have detours. You're gonna have detours, You're going
- 50:19Speaker 1: to have uh stumbled along the way. And fortunately we
- 50:25Speaker 1: had my partners had strong food production background. I'm a
- 50:29Speaker 1: marketing person, and so we combined our talents and we
- 50:33Speaker 1: jumped over those hurdles. We went through caves and tunnels,
- 50:38Speaker 1: but we finally landed in the spot that we wanted
- 50:42Speaker 1: to in the beginning. Now, let me be clear, Glory
- 50:46Speaker 1: Foods was a marketing company. We didn't have the expertise
- 50:51Speaker 1: for the the fixed assets to manufacture these products, so
- 50:55Speaker 1: we subcontracted that out to other companies. In In two
- 51:00Speaker 1: thousand and ten, the company had reached seventy million dollars
- 51:04Speaker 1: in sales in like thirty five states, and we sold
- 51:08Speaker 1: it to the greens manufacturer. The lesson here is begin
- 51:13Speaker 1: with the end in mind that your aim was always
- 51:17Speaker 1: to sell it um. It was started out to be
- 51:20Speaker 1: a a family owned kind of business, just like so
- 51:25Speaker 1: many food businesses. But as time went on, we realized
- 51:28Speaker 1: that there was market value, industry value because this had
- 51:32Speaker 1: never been done before. No one had ever preseasoned greens
- 51:37Speaker 1: or vegetables and then cooked them in a mass production process.
- 51:42Speaker 1: Nobody had done that. And let me just say that
- 51:45Speaker 1: there were many vegetable companies that were very angry that
- 51:48Speaker 1: we got our foot in the door first and out standing.
- 51:51Speaker 1: Like I said, I'm very familiar with the product because
- 51:53Speaker 1: of the fact that for two years Uh, you advertise
- 51:57Speaker 1: on the Steve Harvy Morning showed, the National h Awards
- 52:01Speaker 1: shows Neighborhood Awards, and so you guys had natural instincts
- 52:04Speaker 1: about selling your brand to the community and putting it
- 52:07Speaker 1: in a positive light in the community. I took that
- 52:10Speaker 1: that was my big take aware about the Glory Food's brand,
- 52:13Speaker 1: the whole marketing campaign. Now, when you sold the product,
- 52:16Speaker 1: it's always like you know, you sell your house. You know,
- 52:20Speaker 1: you drive by your house, if they're still taking care
- 52:22Speaker 1: of yard like you took care of yard. You know,
- 52:25Speaker 1: were there any emotions still tied to it, how they
- 52:29Speaker 1: were marking into the product, or how the product was
- 52:32Speaker 1: still tasted like it was when you was part of it,
- 52:35Speaker 1: or you just washed your hands and walked away. No,
- 52:38Speaker 1: I will never wash my hands from Glory Foods because
- 52:42Speaker 1: my my heritage are in those products. My mother's recipes
- 52:47Speaker 1: are in the product. So never ever would I ever
- 52:51Speaker 1: walk away from Glory. Now I don't own it anymore.
- 52:54Speaker 1: But when when you start a small business, you always
- 52:57Speaker 1: have to say, as I say, have the end in
- 52:59Speaker 1: mind that either you're gonna sell it or you're going
- 53:02Speaker 1: to transfer it to your heirs. Got to have that plan,
- 53:05Speaker 1: and when it popped up in two thousand and ten,
- 53:08Speaker 1: we owed it to our investors to take advantage of it.
- 53:12Speaker 1: Well good, I'm I'm happy to have this conversation about
- 53:15Speaker 1: it because of the fact that you started something, and
- 53:18Speaker 1: not many African Americans get to hear an individual who
- 53:22Speaker 1: was part of a successful startup. And the thing I've
- 53:25Speaker 1: been noticing lately that I'm seeing more and more young
- 53:28Speaker 1: entrepreneurs in the business. Why is entrepreneurship important for black people?
- 53:32Speaker 1: Are African Americans? Well, you know how we were taught
- 53:38Speaker 1: just don't put all your eggs in one back. You've
- 53:41Speaker 1: got to have a plan A and a plan B
- 53:43Speaker 1: to sustain yourself. And my parents lived by that motto.
- 53:47Speaker 1: And when we started asking for money, they started saying,
- 53:50Speaker 1: you need to get a job and so right, right,
