- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word. Together
- 0:44in Luke chapter 3, we are given, by comparison, a fairly lengthy
- 0:47look at the ministry and message of John the Baptist.
- 0:50Verse three sums up his preaching succinctly, saying
- 0:53that he was preaching a baptism of repentance for the
- 0:56forgiveness of sins. Verses 4 through 6 reiterate
- 1:00John's role in redemptive history by calling back to the
- 1:03prophecy of Isaiah, saying of him the voice of one crying in
- 1:07the wilderness. Make ready the way of the Lord,
- 1:10make his path straight. Every ravine will be filled, and
- 1:13every mountain and hill will be brought low.
- 1:15The crooked will become straight, and the rough roads
- 1:18smooth, and all flesh will see the salvation of God.
- 1:23John, as prophesied by Isaiah, was calling for the way to be
- 1:26made ready for the Messiah. He was rolling out the
- 1:30metaphorical red carpet for the true king.
- 1:33You see this imagery in the Isaiah passage of hills and
- 1:35mountains being brought low and valleys being lifted up, the
- 1:39ground literally being smoothed out for the Lord to walk upon
- 1:43the earth. What the message of John teaches
- 1:45us is that this metaphor is played out in the hearts of the
- 1:49people. It was not the land that needed
- 1:51preparation for the King's arrival.
- 1:53It was human hearts. And So what is the message that
- 1:57John preaches? Repentance, turning from our
- 2:01sin. That is how the heart is made
- 2:03ready to receive the good news of the gospel.
- 2:07That is how the heart is made ready to hear that the eternal
- 2:09God condescended to humanity, took the form of a human, lived
- 2:13a perfect life, died the death we deserve on a cross, and rose
- 2:17again on the third day. Because of this sacrificial life
- 2:20and death and victorious resurrection, we sinners can be
- 2:23made right with God. We've seen time and time again
- 2:26already in the New Testament, Jesus making clear that it is
- 2:29humility, it is admitting our need, that makes us ready to
- 2:33receive grace. Here in John's message, we see
- 2:37the very same reality. We must repent of our sins.
- 2:41We must acknowledge that we have a problem.
- 2:43A Savior is only good news to a people who knows they need
- 2:46saving, to a heart that knows it needs to be saved.
- 2:50You may have learned as a child the old ABC's of salvation, A
- 2:54admit your need, B believe in Jesus and C confess Jesus as
- 3:00Lord. What John is preaching is that A
- 3:02of the ABC's admit your need, recognize that you have sinned
- 3:07and fallen short of the glory of God and then you will be ready
- 3:11to receive the grace of the gospel.
- 3:14Because here's the reality. John preached a message that can
- 3:17be summed up in one word, Repent.
- 3:20Jesus message takes 2 words to summarize.
- 3:23Repent and believe. Jesus brought the good news.
- 3:27Jesus himself is the object of our belief.
- 3:30He brought what we must believe in.
- 3:33But before we can do that, before that good news is good,
- 3:37we must repent. We that are blessed to know the
- 3:40end of the story, to read from a Bible that's complete, know that
- 3:44repentance is only Part 1. But that does not make it any
- 3:47less vital, any less necessary. Do not miss the first command of
- 3:52the gospel to repent, turn from your sins, confess them to God,
- 3:57and know that, as first John tells us, if we confess our
- 4:00sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins
- 4:05and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
