- 2:50Speaker 1: Motivational Please Welcome to Money Being Conversations. My man, Michael,
- 2:53Speaker 1: call you, Michael, call you. You know um, you know this,
- 3:01Speaker 1: It's it's it's nothing but happiness and memories about our relationship.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Or you helped me launch my comedy club in Houston
- 3:08Speaker 1: and two when you come down there and perform one
- 3:12Speaker 1: of the big names I was able to convince to
- 3:14Speaker 1: come to Houston, Texas and headline my show and and
- 3:18Speaker 1: just but You've always been a giving guy. And when
- 3:21Speaker 1: I read your read your book, I understand I can
- 3:23Speaker 1: understand where it came from. The nature of growing up
- 3:26Speaker 1: in Chicago and and having less but given more. That
- 3:30Speaker 1: was that seemed to be the signal of your whole life. Correct, Yeah, yeah,
- 3:37Speaker 1: I mean, I really believe that it's all about giving.
- 3:39Speaker 1: You know, if you want to have something, you gotta
- 3:41Speaker 1: learn to give all to all. If you give everything
- 3:44Speaker 1: to everybody, you don't have so much stuff, you don't
- 3:46Speaker 1: have no place to put it. Man, and you didn't.
- 3:49Speaker 1: And so lets let's break down your family dynamic. You know,
- 3:52Speaker 1: your father, you know, let's talk about this book. First
- 3:55Speaker 1: of all, the book I'm talking about as Michael Golds Motivational.
- 3:59Speaker 1: It's the third book and it's a very honest book.
- 4:02Speaker 1: You talk about your mom relationship with your father, which
- 4:05Speaker 1: off the time was physical, but your mom was really
- 4:07Speaker 1: the physical person in that domestic relationship. You talk about
- 4:12Speaker 1: being wolf. They were get into battles, to get into battles.
- 4:15Speaker 1: You talk about it was get into battles because of
- 4:17Speaker 1: the alcoholism, you know, and and and that's something that
- 4:20Speaker 1: carried over to our lives, to me and my brothers.
- 4:23Speaker 1: You know, we all end up having some types of addiction.
- 4:26Speaker 1: And our addiction began came honestly, you know, because my
- 4:29Speaker 1: dad was an addict and his addiction with alcoholism. And
- 4:33Speaker 1: he was just a beautiful man that we just absolutely loved.
- 4:36Speaker 1: But he loved that bottle man, you know. And I
- 4:39Speaker 1: mean he could he stick his thing and that bottle.
- 4:41Speaker 1: That bottle was his thing, you know. And and and
- 4:44Speaker 1: my mother loved him. But he drink up all the profits.
- 4:48Speaker 1: So you know, he'd come home and we wouldn't have nothing.
- 4:50Speaker 1: He'd be bubbling and he were one of them happy
- 4:53Speaker 1: drunks to those the kind of did he just drink
- 4:55Speaker 1: for herself, but he wants to treat everybody else. So
- 4:58Speaker 1: we'd be at sitting at the whole out break broke.
- 5:00Speaker 1: My mom and them would get into a fight. But
- 5:02Speaker 1: like I said, she would she wouldn't really fight her.
- 5:04Speaker 1: She'd fight him, and she was five for even he
- 5:07Speaker 1: was six ft three. She would attack him, you know,
- 5:10Speaker 1: and he would never fight it. He hold up getting hurt,
- 5:14Speaker 1: but she just she just really loved him. Go ahead,
- 5:17Speaker 1: I'm sorry to go ahead. Oh no, no, Mike, this
- 5:19Speaker 1: is your moment with Myra on my show Money Making
- 5:21Speaker 1: Conversation because it's your book and I want to promote
- 5:24Speaker 1: the book. I read the book. Everything's very fresh in
- 5:26Speaker 1: my mind because it's a very vivid book. You know.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Let me just some things that just stood out for me.
- 5:31Speaker 1: You know, seven years old, you know as Star foods.
- 5:34Speaker 1: You know those forty ounces that you would uh, you know,
- 5:37Speaker 1: taken to the house first. That was your first household.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Your second hustle was Columbia Records Club. I'll tell you
- 5:44Speaker 1: some man, you broke back so many memories. Man, I
- 5:48Speaker 1: forgot about Columbia Records. Man. You remember jus Man, when
- 5:53Speaker 1: you when I was reading your book and you came
- 5:55Speaker 1: up to Columbia Records Club, I went, oh my god,
- 5:58Speaker 1: I remember that you joined. They see you all these albums,
- 6:02Speaker 1: and then it was for like eleven cents or something
- 6:05Speaker 1: like that wasleven cent for eleven albums. Man, it was unbelievable,
- 6:09Speaker 1: you know. And then at each time I would send
- 6:12Speaker 1: for him, I just changed my name because you know,
- 6:14Speaker 1: I was sending for the eleven albums and then I
- 6:16Speaker 1: take them across the street and sell them at at
- 6:18Speaker 1: the grade. School didn't teach us for like three dollars each,
- 6:22Speaker 1: so I was I was cleaning up. And then after
- 6:24Speaker 1: I told the first time, I'd come back and changed
- 6:26Speaker 1: my name. So first I do with Michael Kaye, then
- 6:28Speaker 1: Michael Keith, then Keith Michaels, and Keith then Kaya Michaels
- 6:32Speaker 1: that I changed the letters around to raylock and let
- 6:34Speaker 1: them relock. I did about eleven times before they finally
- 6:37Speaker 1: caught on, and they kept sending package in to the
- 6:39Speaker 1: same address and it's like, uh, we would cut that off.
- 6:42Speaker 1: But what a great hustle that was, brother. But this
- 6:46Speaker 1: is why I so enjoyed your book, because of the
- 6:49Speaker 1: fact that it was just bringing back you know, your
- 6:51Speaker 1: your your your car beartless saber Man, Yeah sixty seven. Brother.
- 6:58Speaker 1: It was like, you know, I I in the help
- 7:00Speaker 1: with just keep smiling when I keep getting the different
- 7:02Speaker 1: sections of the book, and I was going like, man,
- 7:05Speaker 1: this like memory lane, just talking to this and you
- 7:07Speaker 1: was in Chicago and I grew up in Houston, but
- 7:10Speaker 1: we were basically the same age, but we were still
- 7:13Speaker 1: living the life and enjoying moments. You know, hot water,
- 7:16Speaker 1: corn bread, butter milk, tim teas only thing I took
- 7:20Speaker 1: a fence on in your book, Man, your daddy loved
- 7:22Speaker 1: butter milk. I love butter milk. I couldn't do butter milk.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Ain't butter milk, spoiled milk. It doesn't matter. You put
- 7:31Speaker 1: some sugar, that bad boy. You put some sugar that
- 7:36Speaker 1: my dad corn bread in that butter milk, and you
- 7:41Speaker 1: would have thought he was a kid in the ice
- 7:42Speaker 1: cream store. He was just happy if he could see.
- 7:45Speaker 1: I was like, I'm not having no butter milk. Now,
- 7:47Speaker 1: what about low on the hall did eat? I'm just
- 7:52Speaker 1: the peak feet on the hoghead cheese. See, I'm just chicklings.
- 7:56Speaker 1: See Michael, I'm just a but I love the hog
- 7:59Speaker 1: heead cheese good. Maybe a little bit worse than I
- 8:07Speaker 1: can still the childlings today. But I can't mess with
- 8:10Speaker 1: and crackers. I can't even mess with that. No boy
- 8:13Speaker 1: was come in with pigfy and apparently you had to
- 8:17Speaker 1: purchase some bad the pair so he would come in
- 8:20Speaker 1: with hairs and the hair would still be on, and
- 8:25Speaker 1: that he would have him wrapped in newspaper. It wasn't
- 8:27Speaker 1: even like it wasn't even like Brown Butcher's paper. It
- 8:30Speaker 1: was just newspaper. They wrapped on me in and he's
- 8:33Speaker 1: come and lay him on the front room floor and
- 8:35Speaker 1: unopened the paper like he was opening a wonderful floral kill.
- 8:39Speaker 1: And it would be like four or five sets of pify.
- 8:43Speaker 1: I just run away from home. I just go. I
- 8:45Speaker 1: just run it though, and start running. You know, I
- 8:47Speaker 1: wouldn't come back to it, couldn't eating them, know. You know,
- 8:49Speaker 1: my daddy always said my brothers to come and catch
- 8:52Speaker 1: me because I was always running west thinking I was
- 8:54Speaker 1: coming to Hollywood, but I really just going west on
- 8:57Speaker 1: for the third street, you know, and they always just
- 8:59Speaker 1: go west on pointy third. You'll get it. My brother
- 9:01Speaker 1: come and pick me up. Bringing home. I take my
- 9:03Speaker 1: wooman in week Call of the Day. That was so fun,
- 9:05Speaker 1: you said, because it's just an inch on the map.
- 9:08Speaker 1: So I thought, I from Chicago to California Hollywood the map,
- 9:17Speaker 1: I mean three thousand miles. Ma, mie Man this book.
- 9:22Speaker 1: I was just letting everybody know I'm talking to Michael Car. Youre, uh,
- 9:24Speaker 1: the famous Michael Car. Yeah, the Venice beating King Michael Car.
- 9:28Speaker 1: You gave his donations when they won Star Trek, A
- 9:33Speaker 1: Star Wars Stars A Star Surgeon Michael car Um, Michael,
- 9:37Speaker 1: you know when I when I look at our relationship,
- 9:40Speaker 1: I would just get personal right now. When I met
- 9:42Speaker 1: Michael car Michael Carr, you basically took me on his
- 9:45Speaker 1: wings because my car was famous. When I met him,
- 9:48Speaker 1: he was famous. Okay. He would walk up to all
- 9:51Speaker 1: the agencies and he he walked me in there with him,
- 9:54Speaker 1: and I could I was and after I kind of
- 9:55Speaker 1: like learned a lot of things how to how the
- 9:58Speaker 1: skills that I learned later on as a man as
- 10:00Speaker 1: you're in doing contractors. When I was with him and
- 10:02Speaker 1: he would just talk and here and I just see
- 10:05Speaker 1: the agents and how they would react to him. I
- 10:07Speaker 1: was how they would put projects together. And it was
- 10:09Speaker 1: really inspirational just to see what you were accomplishing and
- 10:13Speaker 1: you was doing it. You were just doing it from
- 10:16Speaker 1: a guy who had a vision who came from Chicago
- 10:19Speaker 1: and started performing on the beach. And that idea came
- 10:22Speaker 1: from some guys that you was watching in Chicago who
- 10:25Speaker 1: was doing street performing and you saw them getting money.
- 10:27Speaker 1: You said hey, because at the time you said you
- 10:29Speaker 1: never tell jokes on the street. But you saw those
- 10:31Speaker 1: two guys performing and the checks they were getting or
- 10:33Speaker 1: the cash they were getting, that changed your mind. Correct
- 10:35Speaker 1: in Chicago, exactly exactly. And then I mean because I
- 10:39Speaker 1: was on stages, I was getting on a little bit
- 10:41Speaker 1: the stages, making third outs here before it ours there,
- 10:44Speaker 1: and they was like, oh, you should come out in
- 10:45Speaker 1: the street and do street performance. I was like, dude,
- 10:47Speaker 1: I ain't no damn street public on the street big
- 10:51Speaker 1: and people to give me money. And then I still
- 10:53Speaker 1: watched them one day and they filled this little brown
- 10:56Speaker 1: bag up with money. I was like, oh lord, I
- 10:58Speaker 1: got the least trotted know and it changed my entire life.
- 11:02Speaker 1: That was nineteen, that was five, and it changed my
- 11:06Speaker 1: life because immediately I became one of the best street
- 11:09Speaker 1: performers in Chicago, and I made so much money. Then,
- 11:12Speaker 1: you know, winter came and when nobody's trying to hit
- 11:14Speaker 1: no jokes on State Street in December, you know. So
- 11:18Speaker 1: that's what encouraged me to go to California. I thought
- 11:20Speaker 1: it was warm all year round, and I found Venice
- 11:23Speaker 1: beach Man, and I mean those nine years defined me
- 11:28Speaker 1: as a human being. The actually defined let's let's describe
- 11:33Speaker 1: exactly for people to know what was going on here. Okay,
- 11:36Speaker 1: it wasn't like a small crowd. You know at Venice
- 11:40Speaker 1: Beach and Venice Beach if you go there, if you
- 11:42Speaker 1: go to California, gotta go to Venice Beach. It is
- 11:44Speaker 1: like a walking entertainment. And anything that you have heard
- 11:47Speaker 1: about Venice Beach, the Muscle Beach is still there. Okay.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Women walking around Scanton clad in bikinis they do that. Okay,
- 11:57Speaker 1: they roller skating down on in bikinis, they do that. Okay,
- 12:02Speaker 1: thongs they do that. And you women and so so
- 12:10Speaker 1: so imagine me, you know, this big, huge crowd I'm
- 12:14Speaker 1: talking about. I would have to say anywhere from three
- 12:17Speaker 1: or four hundred people, just in a big crowd, and
- 12:20Speaker 1: he had this young man, young man in the middle
- 12:23Speaker 1: of them, just entertaining them. And I mean, for that
- 12:27Speaker 1: said what you said was about anywhere about forty minutes,
- 12:30Speaker 1: wasn't it, Michael, that you was out there eight show
- 12:33Speaker 1: was an hour. I would do forty minutes of comedy
- 12:35Speaker 1: and then twenty minutes to get my money. Absolutely, that's right.
- 12:38Speaker 1: And then he had the little the little you know,
- 12:39Speaker 1: like hit. He was funny. The money grab what you're
- 12:42Speaker 1: like the little you know, when you walk around, you
- 12:44Speaker 1: pick up trash off the off the ground. He had that,
- 12:47Speaker 1: I remember, Mike, and I would I would look at
- 12:49Speaker 1: this guy, Wow, how could he do that? Because I'm
- 12:53Speaker 1: talking about this has been as beach, so beautiful sunshine,
- 12:57Speaker 1: you know, and people have stopped what they were doing,
- 13:02Speaker 1: and he held them. I mean he said, come on
- 13:05Speaker 1: a round, come a roight ground, and all of a
- 13:06Speaker 1: sudden the crowd ground, and then more people will come,
- 13:09Speaker 1: and then then the end he got his money and
- 13:10Speaker 1: he went on by this business, Michael, how did you
- 13:14Speaker 1: do it? Man? What the amount of concentration you had
- 13:18Speaker 1: to have to be able to perform like that in
- 13:20Speaker 1: any event where Sunny's Guys, pretty women, muscle, beach food,
- 13:26Speaker 1: live music, other competitors out there performing on the streets.
- 13:30Speaker 1: How did you pull it off? And then here's the
- 13:31Speaker 1: funny point, I would asked mikeel Micael, because you have
- 13:34Speaker 1: to get your spot, and he had he had the
- 13:36Speaker 1: same spot all the time because so he said, no, no, Shane,
- 13:40Speaker 1: I paid somebody they come there and get my spot earlier,
- 13:43Speaker 1: so it's secure. I mostly came early on my own,
- 13:48Speaker 1: you know. I wish I could have done that one.
- 13:51Speaker 1: I wish I could have paid somebody. I was too
- 13:52Speaker 1: stupid for that. I would come early enough, and because
- 13:56Speaker 1: of a funny story about that, and like just to
- 13:58Speaker 1: give a quick recap of him, I would go every
- 14:00Speaker 1: Saturday and Sunday, and I'd worked from noon until five pm,
- 14:03Speaker 1: roughly five when our shows, I'd be surrounded by anywhere
- 14:06Speaker 1: from three to seven dred people. And I did it
- 14:09Speaker 1: through necessity, because when I got to California, I thought
- 14:12Speaker 1: I was gonna hit clubs and make money, and that
- 14:14Speaker 1: wasnot And then I went to us as beach and
- 14:17Speaker 1: white folks will come up and put money right in
- 14:19Speaker 1: the basket, and I had to steal nothing. I had
- 14:21Speaker 1: to cheat, to tell a couple of jokes. And so
- 14:24Speaker 1: I started out trying to go every single day. I
- 14:26Speaker 1: tried to do every day after but I discovered from
- 14:29Speaker 1: working it that the money was only there on the weekend,
- 14:32Speaker 1: and the money was really only there from noon until five,
- 14:35Speaker 1: because after five o'clock, uh, all the white folks left
- 14:39Speaker 1: and took their money with him, and the brothers and
- 14:41Speaker 1: Hispanics would come out with bad attitudes, and so it
- 14:44Speaker 1: wasn't really no need to stay there after that, and
- 14:47Speaker 1: then folks didn't show up until new coming. Now go ahead. Now,
- 14:53Speaker 1: I was just I was just I was enjoying because
- 14:55Speaker 1: you're taking me back down because of the fact that
- 14:58Speaker 1: everything he's said, like I said, I didn't and then
- 15:00Speaker 1: that seven number was not a lie all. It was
- 15:04Speaker 1: like people were peeping over over a people sitting the
- 15:06Speaker 1: top of each other's shoulders so they can see the show.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Because he was he was just surrounded and he had
- 15:11Speaker 1: enough space to be able to entertain himself. And then
- 15:14Speaker 1: sometimes now then sometimes you offer like wouldn't let other
- 15:18Speaker 1: people perform, and sometimes to do your set sometimes because
- 15:21Speaker 1: you you be not and then another artist would come along,
- 15:24Speaker 1: even the great Charlie Burnett, who was a great street
- 15:27Speaker 1: performer in New York. He came out and did it once.
- 15:30Speaker 1: There's two kids to your comic guys named Seymour, you
- 15:34Speaker 1: can think the other guy's name. And they went on
- 15:36Speaker 1: and they're really famous. The in Vegas now doing comedy
- 15:39Speaker 1: and people would come through, but you know a lot
- 15:41Speaker 1: of people was working in this beast. Then R Kelly
- 15:43Speaker 1: came out there for about six months before he made
- 15:46Speaker 1: his big hit. The boys became famous while they were
- 15:50Speaker 1: out there, and you know, so a lot of artists
- 15:52Speaker 1: came out and did their thing, and you know, but
- 15:54Speaker 1: the thing was to be able to stay, to be
- 15:56Speaker 1: able to stick with it and go year after year
- 15:59Speaker 1: after year. So the first year I was sort of
- 16:02Speaker 1: figuring it out. But at the end of the first year,
- 16:03Speaker 1: I was teaching other people how to do it, how
- 16:05Speaker 1: to get their money, you know, how to collect money
- 16:08Speaker 1: as well as to do the work. And they didn't
- 16:10Speaker 1: show business, you know what I'm saying about. If you
- 16:12Speaker 1: ain't getting paid and you just out there, it's a craft,
- 16:15Speaker 1: just not a job. But for me, it was a job.
- 16:18Speaker 1: So I had to also make the money, you know.
- 16:21Speaker 1: And I would get people to compete with each other
- 16:23Speaker 1: to pay me. So I would go group by group
- 16:26Speaker 1: and I say, when I say up, up, you put
- 16:28Speaker 1: your money in the air and scream ye old, And
- 16:30Speaker 1: I'm gonna take this money, grab on, gonna pull the
- 16:32Speaker 1: money out. And now if you get a bat out
- 16:34Speaker 1: of people, gonna plause, if you could attend, we don't cheer.
- 16:37Speaker 1: If you give me a point, we're gonna go crazy.
- 16:40Speaker 1: So people would pull out bigger and bigger bills to
- 16:42Speaker 1: get more recognition. Then I go to the second group,
- 16:45Speaker 1: I say, I know you're not gonna take this off
- 16:48Speaker 1: of them. I know y'all will do better than them.
- 16:50Speaker 1: So they would try to beat each other. It would
- 16:52Speaker 1: come times when sometimes crips and the blood would come
- 16:55Speaker 1: out and they would take different sides and try to
- 16:58Speaker 1: outspend each other. They start to see who could put
- 17:01Speaker 1: the most money in the basket. So it became a
- 17:03Speaker 1: phenomenal game, and every time I was the well because
- 17:07Speaker 1: I went on with you know. And the thing is
- 17:10Speaker 1: that this summer, I'm going back out hopefully in June,
- 17:15Speaker 1: to shoot it as the one I was special. I'm
- 17:17Speaker 1: building a stage for myself that looks like a king's crown,
- 17:21Speaker 1: stand in the middle of that crown, and I'm gonna
- 17:24Speaker 1: do a one hour comedy show called The King of
- 17:26Speaker 1: Usness Beach. So right now we're in the process of
- 17:30Speaker 1: seeking folks to help actually come up with that funding.
- 17:32Speaker 1: But it's gonna happen, and I'm shooting that. You know
- 17:35Speaker 1: that that's going to be special. Speaking to Michael Caryer,
- 17:38Speaker 1: he really is the King of Uness Beaches, Uh, gentleman,
- 17:42Speaker 1: that shaped my early years or what Hollywood could be,
- 17:45Speaker 1: would be, It should be. We'll be back more talking
- 17:47Speaker 1: about his new book, his third book, In Fact, Michael

- 19:47Speaker 1: E R dot Ai. Hi. This is Rashan McDonald and
- 19:50Speaker 1: you're listening to money making conversations on the phone with
- 19:52Speaker 1: a very talented legendary King of Venice Beach, Michael. Call
- 19:57Speaker 1: you he's on Venice Beach. I I'm l a at
- 19:59Speaker 1: night he named. He had already been four years on
- 20:02Speaker 1: the beach at that time, and the crowd was already
- 20:04Speaker 1: surrounding him. So from the six and eighteen eighty five
- 20:08Speaker 1: he built an incredible legacy of a street performer. As
- 20:13Speaker 1: a street performer out there, something that started in the
- 20:15Speaker 1: streets of Chicago. He brought it down in eighty five,
- 20:17Speaker 1: hopped in that uh n eight sixties seven buy the
- 20:21Speaker 1: Sabra or that's a car with some memories right there,
- 20:24Speaker 1: Beuty saber Man and came on down and uh finally
- 20:28Speaker 1: got finally realized that inch was three thousand miles in Canyon, California,
- 20:33Speaker 1: and and and May and and and the blessings of it.
- 20:36Speaker 1: But let's go back a little bit about your family,
- 20:37Speaker 1: because your family shaped you, Michael, and you talk about
- 20:40Speaker 1: it in your book, Uh, Michael goes uh motivation. You
- 20:43Speaker 1: talked about your oldest brother who, out of frustration, he
- 20:47Speaker 1: joined the army went to Vietnam. He was only sixteen,
- 20:50Speaker 1: told it was seventeen. He went over there and became
- 20:52Speaker 1: a sniper. Uh. You talked about the impact of uh,
- 20:57Speaker 1: you know, because because it was five boys. You know,
- 20:59Speaker 1: you're your father who was a trap man. You know,
- 21:02Speaker 1: six three handsome guy. He was a tailor. You know.
- 21:05Speaker 1: So now I understand, I understand. Now I understand you're
- 21:09Speaker 1: looking at because Michael was another person that he always
- 21:11Speaker 1: was shop I never understand. I understand that came from
- 21:14Speaker 1: the family. My daddy was sharp, and so my oldest brother,
- 21:18Speaker 1: Dave Jr. The one who went off to nom he
- 21:20Speaker 1: too was so sharp. And he was really able to
- 21:23Speaker 1: be sharp when he came back because being in the military,
- 21:26Speaker 1: you know, he was able to go and get these
- 21:28Speaker 1: clothes made from all over the world. He'd go to Korea,
- 21:31Speaker 1: and you know when you can go to Korea and
- 21:32Speaker 1: get a nice super nine dollars, and he'd go over
- 21:35Speaker 1: there and he'd come back. And I mean when when
- 21:37Speaker 1: I was in high school and I don't wanted to
- 21:40Speaker 1: be an actor, and so when I got out, I
- 21:42Speaker 1: came right to California and I stayed with my big
- 21:45Speaker 1: brother for a little while, and he had wall to
- 21:48Speaker 1: wall clothing, I mean, suits from one end of the
- 21:52Speaker 1: house to the other. He had shoes from one end
- 21:54Speaker 1: of the other, hat tennis racket and I was like, oh,
- 21:58Speaker 1: I've gotta do that when I'm grow up. And to
- 22:01Speaker 1: this day, I just loved dressing. I can't wait for
- 22:04Speaker 1: an excuse or reason to dress up, you know, And
- 22:07Speaker 1: so yeah, so I get it. For my dad, it
- 22:10Speaker 1: was a tailor and a presser. In fact, we grew
- 22:12Speaker 1: up in the projects Chicago, Robert Taylor home for a
- 22:15Speaker 1: three big too South State parking band on man and
- 22:18Speaker 1: the Jewish people, the old Jewish businessman would seek my
- 22:21Speaker 1: father out that fixed clothes for them, to create suits
- 22:25Speaker 1: for them and to and to fix the clothing that
- 22:28Speaker 1: they had, you know, because my dad knew about clothing
- 22:31Speaker 1: and he was just a shop dresser and a classy cat.
- 22:35Speaker 1: You know, go ahead, ghad, oh no, No. The reason
- 22:39Speaker 1: I enjoyed here because this is what's in the book.
- 22:41Speaker 1: This is the that the passion that you hear Michael's bars,
- 22:45Speaker 1: the storytelling, and so you know, at the beginning of
- 22:48Speaker 1: the book he talks about, you know, it's gonna be
- 22:49Speaker 1: some typos, they're gonna be some corrections of this, but
- 22:52Speaker 1: don't worry about that, and then then he repeats a
- 22:54Speaker 1: red fox joke. That's what that cracked me up. But
- 22:59Speaker 1: it was so funny. I'm say it again right, just
- 23:01Speaker 1: I wanted to say it again. It was like, you know,
- 23:04Speaker 1: when I'm going to on read the book that you're doing.
- 23:06Speaker 1: You know, I'm talking to Michael carl Here the book
- 23:08Speaker 1: I'm talking about it Michael goes uh goes motivational. It's
- 23:12Speaker 1: the third book, Michael, this book in the end because
- 23:15Speaker 1: you get really uh spiritual, you really go to the motivation.
- 23:19Speaker 1: And the reason I like it because of the fact
- 23:21Speaker 1: that I think, in other words, another for somebody to
- 23:23Speaker 1: tell you why you should listen to my motivation. You
- 23:26Speaker 1: need to listen to my journey. And your book is
- 23:29Speaker 1: about a journey. Your book starts as a young kid
- 23:32Speaker 1: and talking about you know, your failures, you know, uh,
- 23:35Speaker 1: you know, being rich several times over, a millionaire several
- 23:38Speaker 1: times over, and you know, and but it also shows
- 23:42Speaker 1: uh flaws, and I think that you you want to
- 23:46Speaker 1: listen to the flaws or here the flaws too, because
- 23:49Speaker 1: when I was talking about the beginning of my show,
- 23:51Speaker 1: I was talking about there they're gonna be failures, and
- 23:53Speaker 1: they're gonna be my owains, They're gonna be valleys, and
- 23:55Speaker 1: your book is about those valleys, correct, and how you
- 23:58Speaker 1: how you still see both of them, because the balance
- 24:02Speaker 1: of the universe is that there are ups and down,
- 24:06Speaker 1: you know. I mean a lot of people think that
- 24:08Speaker 1: the road to success is linear, and rarely is it linear.
- 24:12Speaker 1: It's always the ups and the downs, you know. Like
- 24:14Speaker 1: I like to say, I've been riched three times, but
- 24:16Speaker 1: I've been broke fourteen. So I'm way more comfortable with
- 24:20Speaker 1: broke than i am. Riched me and broke, Like first
- 24:22Speaker 1: cousins will the first name basis, I don't make hot
- 24:25Speaker 1: water corn bread from scratch. I don't have make corn
- 24:27Speaker 1: meal much, you know, and you probably know what you
- 24:30Speaker 1: know much car meal much. You don't serial milk. It's national.
- 24:41Speaker 1: It's on the direction for corn meal. Much is on
- 24:44Speaker 1: every box of corn meal. When you can't afford cereal,
- 24:48Speaker 1: you burial corn meal and water. You put in a
- 24:50Speaker 1: pinc of salt, milk and sugar and yum, yum yum.
- 24:54Speaker 1: I mean, my parents were so poor they couldn't even
- 24:56Speaker 1: afford the kids. The lady Nick don't head us. That's real.
- 25:02Speaker 1: I love it. I love it, and so we so
- 25:06Speaker 1: we we knew poverty. I come from public but when
- 25:09Speaker 1: I got to visits, I learned money because people just
- 25:12Speaker 1: paying me, paying me paying me, and I didn't have
- 25:14Speaker 1: a bunch of responsibilities. All I had with cash. So
- 25:17Speaker 1: you know, after I so much money and so many
- 25:20Speaker 1: people knew me, that's when my addiction kicked in because I,
- 25:23Speaker 1: like I said, Robin Williams said, the best cocaine is
- 25:26Speaker 1: God's way of saying you're making too much of damn money.
- 25:29Speaker 1: And so I end up started slow like most people.
- 25:32Speaker 1: A little weed, did a little blow. Then I found
- 25:35Speaker 1: that crack rocket, and oh oh oh, you know, I
- 25:38Speaker 1: end up spending twenty three years in a crack addiction.
- 25:41Speaker 1: So as of two Sundays ago, as of March first,
- 25:45Speaker 1: I now have nine years of pure sobriety. But I
- 25:49Speaker 1: guarantee you I lost more friends, more jobs, and more
- 25:52Speaker 1: opportunities than I can't even name because of my addiction.
- 25:56Speaker 1: In fact, I am certain that you recognize at my
- 26:00Speaker 1: addiction in a meeting I had with you, a very
- 26:03Speaker 1: important lunch meeting with you, and I had been getting
- 26:07Speaker 1: hot all the night before. But see, people who are
- 26:10Speaker 1: are drugs, they don't think nobody can tell they're getting
- 26:13Speaker 1: hot but them when they're getting hot. And I showed up,
- 26:17Speaker 1: I cleaned up, I freshened up, and I was sitting
- 26:20Speaker 1: there talking to you, and I know I was sweating
- 26:22Speaker 1: like a Kelly in the playground and it wasn't even
- 26:25Speaker 1: that hot. And I know you was wondering, why is
- 26:29Speaker 1: this sweating like that? Or maybe you wasn't wondering, maybe
- 26:32Speaker 1: you knew that the symptoms of that dance that I
- 26:35Speaker 1: was doing that threw my my whole game office track,
- 26:39Speaker 1: you know. And sometimes though you have to the only
- 26:43Speaker 1: way you can get around the thing to go through it.
- 26:45Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying, Well, that's what you've done,
- 26:47Speaker 1: and you you're absolutely correct when you said that, Michael,
- 26:49Speaker 1: is that you know the journey. And that's why I
- 26:52Speaker 1: tell people I'm fortunate to see and be a part
- 26:56Speaker 1: of his life and know that when when when you talk,
- 27:00Speaker 1: it's about twenty three years of hell and twenty three
- 27:03Speaker 1: years of trying to find himself in twenty three years
- 27:06Speaker 1: of making mistakes and being addiction. That's where the god
- 27:09Speaker 1: that's why the book is important because he talks about
- 27:11Speaker 1: his father's addiction to alcohol. It's not something that that
- 27:14Speaker 1: you know that he wanted. Sometimes you know, when we've
- 27:17Speaker 1: learned that through science, that that is that is part
- 27:20Speaker 1: of that can be like a gene trade in you,
- 27:22Speaker 1: and it's something you have to be. If you're aware
- 27:24Speaker 1: of it, then you then you can you look forward.
- 27:26Speaker 1: But when you when you're growing, that lifestyle was it
- 27:30Speaker 1: was so normal to see your dad even though he
- 27:32Speaker 1: was he was a tailor, very skilled person, but he
- 27:36Speaker 1: liked he liked being like so when the hang out
- 27:38Speaker 1: with people who buy them drinks, and the money didn't
- 27:41Speaker 1: come home because guess what, everybody at the club or
- 27:43Speaker 1: the night at the bar, it had a better experience
- 27:45Speaker 1: and he was gonna bring home financially, and so money
- 27:50Speaker 1: didn't come home, come come And that's that's why your
- 27:59Speaker 1: book was just so so appealing to me. And it
- 28:01Speaker 1: was such relatable. Whatever when I talk about what you're
- 28:04Speaker 1: talking about, your mom was working at Spiegel magazine imazine.
- 28:07Speaker 1: When I was so Spiegel Magazine, I said, boy, I said,
- 28:10Speaker 1: if I could hit him, if I could be next time?
- 28:12Speaker 1: He didn't say, because because here's it. Here is it
- 28:15Speaker 1: the thing that I find relatable When you start talking
- 28:17Speaker 1: about tasty freeze, you know, going that taste free let's
- 28:22Speaker 1: go back to feel. So do you remember the Spiegel catalog,
- 28:25Speaker 1: Come on now, Michael, Michael in the back page would
- 28:29Speaker 1: be all pictures of little puppies that you could buy. Yes, speak,
- 28:33Speaker 1: Oh my god. I love the Spiegel and the toy
- 28:36Speaker 1: section out of this world, you know. I don't think
- 28:39Speaker 1: I ever got any of it, but I love looking
- 28:42Speaker 1: at them every I could wait for the Christmas issue
- 28:45Speaker 1: of the Spiegel magazine, Man and Tasty Freeze. What you
- 28:49Speaker 1: know about Tasty Freeze? You need? There were two great
- 28:55Speaker 1: magazines when we came up. It was Sears Magazine and
- 28:58Speaker 1: it was Spiegel Magazine. Now the Speaker Magazine a little
- 29:02Speaker 1: bit more fashionable. You know, Littley was lot as thick
- 29:05Speaker 1: as the Series magazine. But that Speagle Magazine, I think
- 29:10Speaker 1: that was bigger in the in the in the black community.
- 29:12Speaker 1: To speak on magazine was our magazine. It was our magazine,
- 29:16Speaker 1: you know, that was our magazine, Man, And we look
- 29:18Speaker 1: forward to that. Man. That was that was online shopping
- 29:21Speaker 1: before it was than You look at that magazine that
- 29:26Speaker 1: people catalogs have yet to have stuff that was in there.
- 29:30Speaker 1: You know. Yeah, it meant a lot to me. That
- 29:33Speaker 1: my mama's first job, you know, and and that and
- 29:36Speaker 1: and that was the beginning of her liberation as well,
- 29:39Speaker 1: you know, because she had to leave my dad, and
- 29:41Speaker 1: she didn't have to leave the coach. She didn't love him.
- 29:43Speaker 1: She loved my father and he loved us. But my
- 29:47Speaker 1: mother wanted more for her boys. He didn't want us
- 29:50Speaker 1: to spend the rest of our lives in the project.
- 29:52Speaker 1: She just wanted more for us than was really, really
- 29:55Speaker 1: deep that I found out and writing this book with Shawn,
- 29:58Speaker 1: I gotta tell you, I it's a it's a journey
- 30:01Speaker 1: of self discovery. There was so much stuff about my
- 30:03Speaker 1: own family that I didn't know until I started writing
- 30:07Speaker 1: this book. Question I didn't know. I mean, my mother
- 30:13Speaker 1: ended up marrying Walter Smith, who was my stepfather, but
- 30:17Speaker 1: I didn't know that he was her first high school sweetheart,
- 30:21Speaker 1: that she took her to her first prim he did
- 30:25Speaker 1: to block away from her. He was so deeply in
- 30:27Speaker 1: love with her that he asked her father for her
- 30:31Speaker 1: hand in marriage when she was sixteen, and he said no, no,
- 30:34Speaker 1: she's too young, and so he went away and joined
- 30:37Speaker 1: the navy, and while he was god, my mama ran
- 30:40Speaker 1: into my father, or he must have run into her
- 30:42Speaker 1: several times, because she up and get pregnant and that
- 30:46Speaker 1: was it for Walter Smith. Walter Smith was out of
- 30:49Speaker 1: her life. My mother went on to have four more
- 30:51Speaker 1: kids by my father. They had five kids. Twenty five
- 30:54Speaker 1: years later, when my mom was trying to get her
- 30:57Speaker 1: life together, she the Winter Spiegels. She the man enough
- 31:00Speaker 1: money to finally go to Sears Driving School and learn
- 31:04Speaker 1: how to drive. She went and bought our first car,
- 31:06Speaker 1: a Woodie, and she took that car to get in
- 31:09Speaker 1: service then Robin's Illinois. And you know, when you get
- 31:12Speaker 1: your car service, you're sitting in the back after they
- 31:15Speaker 1: sending it back, and they watched it when she went
- 31:16Speaker 1: back to get the car. Watched and who do you
- 31:19Speaker 1: think is watching the car? High school sweetheart, Walter Smith.
- 31:23Speaker 1: And all I could think of is what went through
- 31:25Speaker 1: my mama's head. And she watched Walter rubbing and soping
- 31:29Speaker 1: and sooping and rubbing that car. I mean, they kicked
- 31:33Speaker 1: it off like that. Twenty years had never passed, and
- 31:36Speaker 1: the next thing, you know, they were a couple again.
- 31:38Speaker 1: She went on and told my father all best foot
- 31:41Speaker 1: all she was getting to divorce and marrying Walter Smith.
- 31:44Speaker 1: And so she stayed with my dad for twenty five years,
- 31:47Speaker 1: you know, and then she married her high school sweetheart.
- 31:50Speaker 1: When she stayed with until his death, you know. And
- 31:52Speaker 1: he was a great stepfather. And we loved my father,
- 31:56Speaker 1: you know, but we also understood what was going on.
- 31:59Speaker 1: We watched this that was and we watched the constom
- 32:02Speaker 1: fighting and my mother crying. We watched my father comes
- 32:05Speaker 1: staggering in the house and the mother didn't come home.
- 32:08Speaker 1: We watched all of that, and we loved my dad.
- 32:10Speaker 1: And I mean, maybe six months after they got divorced,
- 32:14Speaker 1: my father up and died yea fifty one. And I
- 32:19Speaker 1: thought at first that it was from the complications from
- 32:22Speaker 1: the diabetes. You know what y' all called the sugar
- 32:25Speaker 1: because he had diabetes and he should have been drinking
- 32:27Speaker 1: at all, but he drinking fit the booze a day
- 32:29Speaker 1: and spoke through that pack of pal Mail series, and
- 32:32Speaker 1: so I thought, it's hardly explode in his check. But
- 32:34Speaker 1: when I think about it more, I am certain that
- 32:37Speaker 1: he died of a broken heart. He just loved my mother, man,
- 32:41Speaker 1: and she loved him too, But she wanted more for
- 32:44Speaker 1: her kids, man, you know, And sometimes the thing is
- 32:47Speaker 1: over is over, and you gotta move on, man. You know.
- 32:50Speaker 1: That's the beauty of this book is that it's a journey.
- 32:55Speaker 1: It's it's I was just look there, because who's all air?
- 32:59Speaker 1: He has the book about that whole ten year run
- 33:02Speaker 1: on Venis Beach, because that's another book. That's another book.
- 33:05Speaker 1: But this book, Yeah, the book is delivering to us
- 33:08Speaker 1: called Michael Gets Motivation, Ghost Motivational. Excuse me, ghost Motivational.
- 33:12Speaker 1: Michael tell us how we can buy that book. First
- 33:14Speaker 1: of all, for our going to my little well, you know,
