- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's word together. In John Chapter 11, Jesus friend
- 0:45Lazarus dies. This results in Lazarus sisters
- 0:49Mary and Martha both telling Jesus that if he had been there,
- 0:52their brother would not have died.
- 0:55These sisters are grieving and in their grief they release the
- 0:58pain of having lost their brother out on Jesus.
- 1:01Now you may know already how this story ends.
- 1:04Lazarus does not stay dead. In verse 43, Jesus calls out to
- 1:08Lazarus who had at this point been dead for four days.
- 1:11He calls to him saying Lazarus come forth and just like that,
- 1:15Lazarus is raised to life again. A breathtaking display of Jesus
- 1:19power over death and a beautiful foretaste of Jesus own
- 1:22resurrection. Later in this gospel I want us
- 1:25to rewind though. Let's take a moment to look at
- 1:28how Jesus responds to the death of Lazarus and to the grief of
- 1:31Mary and Martha. Listen to the scene that takes
- 1:34place between Jesus and Mary in verses 28 through 35.
- 1:38It says when she had said this, she went away and called Mary
- 1:41her sister, saying secretly, the teacher is here and is calling
- 1:44for you. And when she heard it, she got
- 1:46up quickly and was coming to him.
- 1:48Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in
- 1:50the place where Martha met him. Then the Jews who were with her
- 1:53in the house and consoling her, when they saw that Mary got up
- 1:56quickly and went out, they followed her, supposing that she
- 1:58was going to the tomb to weep there.
- 2:01Therefore, when Mary came where Jesus was, she saw him and fell
- 2:04at his feet, saying to him, Lord, if you had been here, my
- 2:08brother would not have died. Mary's in deep grief.
- 2:11She's just lost her brother. She feels helpless and at her
- 2:15weakest. She feels that Jesus abandoned
- 2:17them in their time of need. The passage goes on.
- 2:21When Jesus therefore saw her weeping and the Jews who came
- 2:24with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and was
- 2:27troubled and said, Where have you laid him?
- 2:30They said to him, Lord, come and see.
- 2:33Jesus is moved by Mary's grief. He does not offer her cheap
- 2:37consolation. No, He is genuinely moved.
- 2:40He's embodying the instruction that Paul gives in Romans 12 to
- 2:43weep with those who weep because in the very next verse, the
- 2:46shortest verse in the whole Bible, that grief Jesus feels
- 2:50inside makes its way out. Listen to verse 35.
- 2:54Jesus wept. He wept.
- 2:57The God of the universe, who had humbly taken the form of man and
- 3:00stepped into a broken world, wept at the real painful effects
- 3:05of that brokenness. His friend was dead and his
- 3:08friends were weeping, and so he wept.
- 3:12And this is our Saviour, as we read in Isaiah 53.
- 3:15This is the Man of sorrows, the one who bears our griefs, the
- 3:19one who carries our sorrows. This is the one who offers rest
- 3:24to all who are weary and heavy laden, the one who is gentle and
- 3:28humble in heart. Friend, we live in a world that
- 3:31guarantees that one day soon you will find yourself in the
- 3:34position that Mary found herself weeping in sorrow and loss.
- 3:40But friend, if you are in Christ, you have a Saviour, an
- 3:43advocate who is well acquainted with your griefs.
- 3:46He carries them, He bids you cast them on him, He weeps
- 3:50alongside you, and he is even now reconciling all things to
- 3:54himself. He is coming soon to make all
- 3:57things new. He knows your pain, He feels
- 4:01your pain, He will comfort you through that pain.
- 4:05And he is coming again, one day soon, to make an end to all of
- 4:09that pain.
