- 0:57Speaker 1: Kiera Mason, how are you doing than you get all
- 1:01Speaker 1: that right? They're like, get all that right? The names
- 1:04Speaker 1: and the paycing and all that. What I'm saying, I
- 1:09Speaker 1: gotta get everything. Let me go through this end to be.
- 1:11Speaker 1: My name is Roshan, so I'm very particular by people
- 1:14Speaker 1: who say my name incorrectly. Okay, cool, like a Tiara
- 1:20Speaker 1: to Kiara. So if I messed up in the process,
- 1:23Speaker 1: if I was with Sean Seana Chiara eight years ago,
- 1:29Speaker 1: it's kind of like this relationship kind of started. What
- 1:31Speaker 1: did you see? And Mr Jared they kind of like lossom.
- 1:35Speaker 1: This whole MTM business that you are, like, you know
- 1:39Speaker 1: started right before covid, and then it survived covid and
- 1:42Speaker 1: now we're in two talk to me. Yeah first, okay,
- 1:48Speaker 1: So as far as the company, we knew that we
- 1:51Speaker 1: wanted to do business together, but we never knew being marketing.
- 1:54Speaker 1: So my backgrounds as a social work and his is
- 1:57Speaker 1: in sales and us just documenting our learning on YouTube
- 2:01Speaker 1: as family Bloggers document and our pregnacy journey lending us
- 2:05Speaker 1: a TV show, and we started getting brand partnerships and
- 2:08Speaker 1: we're like, I think we're pretty good at marketing, Let's
- 2:10Speaker 1: do this for other people. And that's what it led to.
- 2:13Speaker 1: I never thought it would grow in this capacity, but
- 2:15Speaker 1: he did. He was a visionary of it all and
- 2:19Speaker 1: I think this is definitely a money making conversations. Absolutely absolutely.
- 2:23Speaker 1: It was a lot of fun because the idea at
- 2:25Speaker 1: the time. As Garrett mentioned, she has a bachelor's and
- 2:27Speaker 1: masters in social work and my my background is in insurance.
- 2:31Speaker 1: So I was a license insurance broker in forty four states.
- 2:34Speaker 1: And as we're going through this different process, both of
- 2:36Speaker 1: our career paths were providing resources and solutions to clients
- 2:40Speaker 1: and need but whatever that capacity was. But the common
- 2:44Speaker 1: denominator that we found was when they didn't have enough
- 2:46Speaker 1: money coming in, they couldn't afford those resources. So how
- 2:49Speaker 1: could we change that? And what I started getting invited
- 2:52Speaker 1: to for the agencies I worked with was, hey, how
- 2:54Speaker 1: do we reposition our offer? How do we reposition our
- 2:57Speaker 1: brand to track more clients? Because he from the agency perspective,
- 3:01Speaker 1: they wanted more sales. So I started going into those
- 3:04Speaker 1: meetings having those conversations and it just turned into so
- 3:07Speaker 1: many more things. So as here I mentioned, we started
- 3:10Speaker 1: our YouTube channel about six years ago and that just
- 3:12Speaker 1: opened a lot of doors. YouTube channel that means you
- 3:16Speaker 1: became visual. What was it? What did friends inspire you
- 3:20Speaker 1: to do? The YouTube channel. You guys sat down and said,
- 3:22Speaker 1: you know something. You know both look good looking, people,
- 3:25Speaker 1: were articulate, We have personalities. You know that's the thing
- 3:28Speaker 1: to do. Now, what made you guys go into the
- 3:31Speaker 1: YouTube business? Well, I think it's it's a it's a
- 3:35Speaker 1: funny story. I'm gonna try to tell it fast. Let's
- 3:38Speaker 1: tell no, no, no, We got time now, because you
- 3:40Speaker 1: know I might stop you. I might stop you. So
- 3:43Speaker 1: I'll give you a little bit of backstory. So of
- 3:45Speaker 1: course before college, obviously we were not in college. So
- 3:50Speaker 1: growing up, um, I actually used to live in Japan
- 3:52Speaker 1: for twelve years and when I came back from Japan,
- 3:55Speaker 1: we moved to Chicago briefly and came down to Florida
- 3:58Speaker 1: started our college careers. This was before Kira and I met,
- 4:02Speaker 1: and everything that we've done for at least my family's
- 4:05Speaker 1: side and Kara's family side separately, is very calpulated. So
- 4:08Speaker 1: everybody's calculated steps. This is where we're going, this is
- 4:10Speaker 1: what we're doing. And I met Kiara actually on my
- 4:14Speaker 1: first day going to this church. I was trying to
- 4:16Speaker 1: visit to see my aunt. She moved down from Chicago,
- 4:20Speaker 1: and she was like, Hey, I want to join this church,
- 4:22Speaker 1: and I want to do this I would do. I'm like, hey,
- 4:23Speaker 1: we're all new to Florida. We don't really know that
- 4:25Speaker 1: many people. Most of our families in Chicago. So I
- 4:28Speaker 1: was like, before you join, at least let me and
- 4:30Speaker 1: my brothers come and check out the place. So I
- 4:32Speaker 1: walk in and PR's there, and I think it's an
- 4:37Speaker 1: interesting story. I'd probably say a little bit of that
- 4:39Speaker 1: spice for later, but uh, spice, spice, spice. It was.
- 4:46Speaker 1: It was a lot of fun. But so I'll give
- 4:47Speaker 1: you the long story, short version of it. So I
- 4:50Speaker 1: saw on that first day and I just had this
- 4:52Speaker 1: feeling of that that she was going to be my wife.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Invited her out for a date. Three weeks later after
- 4:58Speaker 1: this date situation, and we had a little dating window.
- 5:01Speaker 1: We had a three week engagement, three weeks were married,
- 5:03Speaker 1: and we've been married for nine years. Okay, so just
- 5:06Speaker 1: a little because you know you told fast now come
- 5:08Speaker 1: on that there was a lot of dates that were
- 5:12Speaker 1: very short window. Okay, you met her, you know, going
- 5:15Speaker 1: to church right that that he got that correct? Yes,
- 5:18Speaker 1: and then three you said you should did you look
- 5:21Speaker 1: at him and say he was going to be your husband? Yes?
- 5:24Speaker 1: So on our first day, the first date, that's what
- 5:26Speaker 1: we missed was on our first day, we both told
- 5:29Speaker 1: each other that we will marry one another. We literally
- 5:31Speaker 1: turned around on our phones. And I would never recommend that.
- 5:33Speaker 1: I would never do that. I'm just not that person.
- 5:36Speaker 1: But I felt prompted to do it. I really felt
- 5:38Speaker 1: like he was my husband because I saw so much
- 5:40Speaker 1: of me and him, but like he was a mail
- 5:42Speaker 1: version of me. And so after our first day, I
- 5:45Speaker 1: was like, you know what, this is too good to
- 5:48Speaker 1: be true. My friends was like, I don't know, you
- 5:49Speaker 1: should be cautious, and then that started the hiatus of
- 5:53Speaker 1: our talking to one another. But when we reconvened, um
- 5:56Speaker 1: he stopped talking, Like he didn't say by to me
- 5:58Speaker 1: at church one day, y'all, and I was like, what's
- 6:01Speaker 1: wrong with he had he has a girlfriend, just let
- 6:03Speaker 1: me know. And my friends like, when you told him
- 6:05Speaker 1: you didn't like him. Nonetheless, I had a dream that
- 6:07Speaker 1: he was still my husband and that I wasn't happy
- 6:10Speaker 1: with it with the former relationship, and I knew that
- 6:12Speaker 1: he really was. So we reconvened and then after that
- 6:15Speaker 1: three weeks we were engaged. In three weeks after that,
- 6:17Speaker 1: we were married. Okay, great, you engaged, you were married
- 6:22Speaker 1: three weeks. You know that's TV show stuff. You know,
- 6:25Speaker 1: it's just you know, that's you know, marriage and first
- 6:28Speaker 1: love and first sight. You know, they got a lot
- 6:30Speaker 1: of reality shows rolling around with YouTube people in it.
- 6:32Speaker 1: But in fact, y'all at least y'all did three weeks
- 6:35Speaker 1: three weeks, right, So that's how we walked up the show.
- 6:39Speaker 1: It was like, what are y'all doing? Right? That's just
- 6:42Speaker 1: I said it fast because it really happened fast, and
- 6:44Speaker 1: there like what are you all doing? So we started
- 6:46Speaker 1: making videos to show our family, our lifestyle, and that's
- 6:50Speaker 1: where YouTube was born for us. Okay, cool, So because
- 6:54Speaker 1: you know, I gotta get you see, you know I've
- 6:57Speaker 1: read I brought this in your bio with you know,
- 7:00Speaker 1: getting brought it up so quick in this conversation. Now
- 7:04Speaker 1: I'm I'm like I said, my wife. I met her
- 7:07Speaker 1: at eighty one, were buried in eighty eight. Okay, So
- 7:10Speaker 1: but I traveled a lot. You know, I was doing
- 7:12Speaker 1: stand up comedian. I was standing up gonna be the
- 7:14Speaker 1: next head to Murphrey. So I was on the road
- 7:16Speaker 1: a lot. So now y'all met on the first dage
- 7:19Speaker 1: you you know, you looked at one another, say, we
- 7:22Speaker 1: got a lot of things in common. I'm just trying
- 7:24Speaker 1: to get to the to the marriage part. Okay, So
- 7:27Speaker 1: first week, so we're talking about three weeks. So first week,
- 7:30Speaker 1: second week, third week. What was this first week like together?
- 7:35Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. It was kind of like for me,
- 7:37Speaker 1: I was like, Wow, this is my person and this
- 7:41Speaker 1: is really happening for me because I knew in the
- 7:43Speaker 1: beginning of the year that I was going to be
- 7:44Speaker 1: a wife, even though in my single hood, but I
- 7:47Speaker 1: knew that I was going to be a wife. I
- 7:49Speaker 1: just didn't know who it was and who I thought
- 7:51Speaker 1: it was gonna be was not it. And so finally
- 7:54Speaker 1: being saying that, okay, we're gonna be together, it was like, okay,
- 7:58Speaker 1: well what's stopping us from is actually making it official.
- 8:01Speaker 1: But we were really happy. Okay, cool now Gerard Jared
- 8:06Speaker 1: keeping my apologize um. Second week, she said she thought
- 8:11Speaker 1: she was gonna be somebody else. But now as you
- 8:14Speaker 1: second week, where are we at? Did you did you
- 8:17Speaker 1: drop her wings ringing? On the second week? When did
- 8:19Speaker 1: the ring pop up when you drop on the knees?
- 8:21Speaker 1: When did it was? It was? When did that happen. Okay,
- 8:24Speaker 1: so I'll be a little bit slower this time, thank you. Yeah,
- 8:29Speaker 1: when when when you when you meet, you get married
- 8:31Speaker 1: in three weeks, you guys are slowing down sometimes. So
- 8:35Speaker 1: so especially this whole process was I. I was sitting
- 8:40Speaker 1: there and I had I had my moment to kind
- 8:43Speaker 1: of sit on the back row, and I was like,
- 8:45Speaker 1: all right, cool. I saw her walking down the aisle.
- 8:47Speaker 1: I saw me at the hour receiving her walking down
- 8:49Speaker 1: the aisle. So that was that whole situation. So we
- 8:52Speaker 1: turned our phones around, as KR I mentioned, and there
- 8:56Speaker 1: was about what about six months roughly that didn't wanna
- 9:00Speaker 1: have nothing to do with me. Say, that was after
- 9:04Speaker 1: that first day, so it was a week and then
- 9:07Speaker 1: six months went by where she didn't want to have
- 9:09Speaker 1: anything to do with me. My whole situation during that
- 9:11Speaker 1: time was I was still seeing the vision of the
- 9:15Speaker 1: completed process, which is why I always talk about Jared
- 9:18Speaker 1: like the jury store, because she went to Jared at
- 9:20Speaker 1: the end. You know. So I'm going through this whole
- 9:23Speaker 1: process and I'm like, Okay, well, if I see that
- 9:28Speaker 1: this is who I want to marry, we've already communicated that.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Whether it's briefly a long term relationship. Whatever situation is,
- 9:35Speaker 1: the idea is mutual. At this point, she decides to
- 9:39Speaker 1: not follow through with that, that's up on her. But
- 9:42Speaker 1: I still see myself as being married. I don't know
- 9:44Speaker 1: who's going to be. She still sees herself as being married.
- 9:47Speaker 1: She's not true who's going to be. But my initial
- 9:50Speaker 1: desire was for it to be her. So I just
- 9:52Speaker 1: stayed in that safe zone of hey, how can I
- 9:55Speaker 1: be in the picture but not in the picture. So
- 9:58Speaker 1: if I found out she had a need, or if
- 10:00Speaker 1: I found out she was she was going to the venue,
- 10:03Speaker 1: were doing something, I wouldn't always be at that place
- 10:06Speaker 1: other than church obviously. Uh. It was like, hey, if
- 10:10Speaker 1: I find out that you'll have a fundraiser, I guess
- 10:11Speaker 1: who's gonna give something. If I find out you'll have
- 10:14Speaker 1: a promotion, guess who's gonna sponsor something like, just be
- 10:17Speaker 1: in the room. So the number one goal was just
- 10:20Speaker 1: being in the room, so keeping that vision and standing
- 10:22Speaker 1: in line of sight. So really just one got your
- 10:25Speaker 1: story right, So really you met one week, then six
- 10:28Speaker 1: months later, there was no interaction, right. It was it
- 10:32Speaker 1: was a little like he would text me always at
- 10:34Speaker 1: the right time, like when I was down or whenever,
- 10:37Speaker 1: just hey, checking up on you. I'm like, oh, hey,
- 10:38Speaker 1: I appreciate it. And that was it, and I'm like,
- 10:40Speaker 1: why does he always text me at the right time?
- 10:42Speaker 1: But nonetheless as far as like going out and doing things, no,
- 10:46Speaker 1: we didn't. Okay, cool? And then okay, so there's a
- 10:48Speaker 1: three week courtship I'm assuming right, one week six months oparation,
- 10:53Speaker 1: then two to the second week, and then the third
- 10:55Speaker 1: week you got married. Is that correct? Yes? Yes, the
- 10:59Speaker 1: third yeah, two weeks. She had this dream and you
- 11:06Speaker 1: can kind of talk about your dream if you want. Yeah.
- 11:08Speaker 1: So in the dream, I was after my roommate caught
- 11:12Speaker 1: me out and she was like, I thought, he says
- 11:13Speaker 1: you didn't like him, and I was like, you know,
- 11:15Speaker 1: I'm just so frustrated. Let me go pray. And so
- 11:17Speaker 1: I'm praying to God, my God, why do I feel
- 11:20Speaker 1: this way? Why am I offended? What's going on? And
- 11:22Speaker 1: then he showed me the dream of me being with
- 11:24Speaker 1: Jared and my life was Philippiece Bli bliss. And then
- 11:27Speaker 1: he showed me a vision with my ex boyfriend, and
- 11:30Speaker 1: I was still even more unhappier than I already was
- 11:33Speaker 1: with our relationship and that's when I knew it sealed
- 11:36Speaker 1: the deal. So just coming back to him and I
- 11:39Speaker 1: was like, hey, do you still feel the same way?
- 11:40Speaker 1: And he tried to play a little hard to get
- 11:42Speaker 1: it first, but then he said yes, So we said yes.
- 11:45Speaker 1: So the first week was great, just finally being on
- 11:48Speaker 1: the same page. Second week was I think you actually
- 11:50Speaker 1: went to I think we said, hey, Dad, I want
- 11:53Speaker 1: to come chat with you, and you went and asked
- 11:55Speaker 1: my dad, right. So, um, at that point we actually
- 11:58Speaker 1: had another date and it was like, Hey, are we
- 12:00Speaker 1: gonna do this or not. She's like, yeah, we're gonna
- 12:02Speaker 1: do this, all right. Cool. After I got the green light,
- 12:05Speaker 1: I'm in a strategy mode. I'm a strategy by nature,
- 12:07Speaker 1: so it's all right cool, So I'm going strategy. Obviously,
- 12:10Speaker 1: I got to talk to dad, I gotta talk to pastor,
- 12:12Speaker 1: and I gotta talked to my mom, my dad, the
- 12:14Speaker 1: whole situation that's going through my head, lined up those
- 12:17Speaker 1: ducks in the row, and made the initial appointment to
- 12:21Speaker 1: everybody I had to meet, and then after that it
- 12:24Speaker 1: was go time. Right. Well, you know, it's interesting, you know,
- 12:27Speaker 1: because um, you know I think I feel when I
- 12:31Speaker 1: look at your relationship, which is a strong relationship, you know,
- 12:34Speaker 1: because you're y'all a couple that are in business. That
- 12:38Speaker 1: basically laid you laid the groundwork for building this relationship.
- 12:41Speaker 1: You may have not dated for six months, but you
- 12:44Speaker 1: position yourself to show her value but physically being there
- 12:49Speaker 1: and emotionally, and that's that's how you communicated to her.
- 12:53Speaker 1: That's how you warnt her over, warn her heart. And
- 12:56Speaker 1: I think there's a lesson to be learned there that
- 12:58Speaker 1: you know people, you don't have to technically when somebody's
- 13:03Speaker 1: heart or when somebody's loved by constantly being there, if
- 13:07Speaker 1: you don't do anything to encourage a positivity in your relationship.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Because she said some key things, I think fature. He
- 13:14Speaker 1: always called me at the right time, He always said something,
- 13:17Speaker 1: he always said, He always dropped knowledge on me that
- 13:20Speaker 1: that was needed for me to get to the next day.
- 13:21Speaker 1: And I'm sure she did the same thing for you.
- 13:24Speaker 1: You know. Now, I had the coldest shoulder. She was
- 13:28Speaker 1: not reaching out to your boy at all. Okay, Okay,
- 13:33Speaker 1: come on up. Now he's saying that, he's saying that
- 13:36Speaker 1: like that, but we know you you was receiving as
- 13:39Speaker 1: they said, you were receiving these blessings. Okay, how can
- 13:43Speaker 1: you say that you were giving him the cold shoulder
- 13:46Speaker 1: and you were receiving these blessings. Know it was true,
- 13:50Speaker 1: like I really was, because I was just so frightened
- 13:53Speaker 1: that this was too good to be true for me.
- 13:55Speaker 1: So I didn't want to be let down once again.
- 13:57Speaker 1: So the safest way to do that was to set
- 14:00Speaker 1: create my emotions, to separate, you know that from me,
- 14:03Speaker 1: so that I can just continue living my life until
- 14:05Speaker 1: I figure out is this what I really want? Right? Okay?
- 14:09Speaker 1: So I literally mean a coach shoulder, Like after thank you?
- 14:13Speaker 1: That was it. Then month will go by. It was like, hey,
- 14:17Speaker 1: how's how's your they going to hope all as well? Boom,
- 14:19Speaker 1: all as well? Thanks? Two months we go by literal
- 14:24Speaker 1: shoulder right, Well, you know, I commend you brother, you know,
- 14:28Speaker 1: you know that's like wanting to cross the floor for
- 14:30Speaker 1: a dance flow. You know, the best song is being
- 14:32Speaker 1: played and she says she's moving in a chair right right,
- 14:35Speaker 1: we'd like to do No, Okay, I I gotta walk
- 14:39Speaker 1: right back, I gotta walkome crossly. But you're still moving
- 14:43Speaker 1: in your chair though, okay, right, So but that leads
- 14:47Speaker 1: to a relationship. Now that thank god you guys connected.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Thank god y'all got married, and then y'all became business owners.
- 14:54Speaker 1: How did the business aspect develop into this? Because first
- 14:58Speaker 1: of all, you had to court her, then she had
- 15:02Speaker 1: to then she had to believe that you will overcome
- 15:04Speaker 1: the ants that you were. You were not going to
- 15:08Speaker 1: be another mistake. Now y'all in business together. How does
- 15:12Speaker 1: that work? And do you Carara, have any doubts about
- 15:18Speaker 1: in your mind when you talk about this business relationship?
- 15:20Speaker 1: What what knocks out the doubts? I think after once
- 15:25Speaker 1: I was finally on the page that like God gave
- 15:28Speaker 1: me that piece that he was my husband, it's still
- 15:30Speaker 1: to do. I never had a question if he was
- 15:32Speaker 1: my husband. I never had a question about um, was
- 15:35Speaker 1: I going in the right direction? Never again, Now we
- 15:38Speaker 1: got in business and I was like, I've never been
- 15:41Speaker 1: a business owner before, and so I have to take
- 15:43Speaker 1: your leadership in a different way. And so still we
- 15:47Speaker 1: are very big on being unified before we move forward
- 15:49Speaker 1: with anything, and that I think has been a key
- 15:52Speaker 1: to our marriage. So we will make sure that we're
- 15:54Speaker 1: on the same page before we move forward with anything.
- 15:57Speaker 1: But honestly, when it comes to the day to day
- 15:59Speaker 1: or in business. We had to really define our roles,
- 16:01Speaker 1: like he really is I even though I own majority
- 16:05Speaker 1: of the business, he is actually a CEO, and I'm
- 16:07Speaker 1: a ce by nature. I'm very operational and very methodical.
- 16:11Speaker 1: I'm very service oriented. He is as well. But we
- 16:14Speaker 1: recognized after a while we were kind of bumping heads
- 16:17Speaker 1: a little bit that while, Okay, you're really a visionary,
- 16:20Speaker 1: let me take your lead in that regard. And I
- 16:22Speaker 1: had to settle my own, you know, issues with that too.
- 16:26Speaker 1: We'll be right back with more Money Making Conversations Masterclass
- 16:29Speaker 1: with Rushan McDonald. Now, let's return to Money Making Conversations
- 16:37Speaker 1: Masterclass with Rashan McDonald. Well, you know he's a visionary.
- 16:41Speaker 1: He saw you and you didn't see him, but you
- 16:45Speaker 1: already got that Jared is a visionary. Okay, I don't know.
- 16:50Speaker 1: I don't know. I got blind I got blind zone.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Let's talk about your business. Let's talk about your business.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Made to maximize? Why that name, Jarrett Um Made to maximize?
- 17:02Speaker 1: We always had something empty m. It was Meet the
- 17:04Speaker 1: Mason's on YouTube mt M Creative Imagy and co Um,
- 17:08Speaker 1: which was the original consulting and marketing agency, but made
- 17:11Speaker 1: to maximize really with birth. From a scriptural perspective, it's
- 17:14Speaker 1: like we're called to be fruitful, called to multiply, have dominion,
- 17:17Speaker 1: to do all these different things. But then as we're
- 17:20Speaker 1: going to do this, that's literally the track record that
- 17:22Speaker 1: we've left in every avenue, whether it was social work,
- 17:25Speaker 1: where it was sales, whether it was insurance, we're maximizing
- 17:28Speaker 1: everybody's opportunity. So when it came into the business world,
- 17:31Speaker 1: it's like, hey, if you're going to invest a hundred
- 17:34Speaker 1: dollars or a hundred thousand, or whatever case may be
- 17:36Speaker 1: in your business, how do you maximize the return on
- 17:39Speaker 1: that investment. And that's what we believe that we're supposed
- 17:42Speaker 1: to do. It's help people maximize that. And I love
- 17:45Speaker 1: to use the example of a dentist. Um. If you
- 17:47Speaker 1: have a dentist and they're the best oral surgeon in
- 17:49Speaker 1: the in the world, their job is to help people
- 17:52Speaker 1: with their teeth. They don't have time or they shouldn't
- 17:55Speaker 1: prioritize the time to post that stuff on the website,
- 17:58Speaker 1: to make an Instagram, to make a LinkedIn and TikTok.
- 18:01Speaker 1: If they do both, one job is worth a hundred
- 18:04Speaker 1: dollars an hour. One job is worth ten thousand dollars
- 18:07Speaker 1: an hour, So why don't you focus on your ten
- 18:09Speaker 1: thousand things and let us focus on the hundred or
- 18:11Speaker 1: the thousand, and that will bring in more of your
- 18:14Speaker 1: ten thousand dollar clients. So if you can leverage our
- 18:17Speaker 1: expertise in the bandwidth of our team to say, hey,
- 18:20Speaker 1: when I do all these things by myself, I'm only
- 18:23Speaker 1: going this fast. Or when I get this leverage point
- 18:25Speaker 1: of vehicle, I can accelerate. And that's what we help
- 18:28Speaker 1: business owners do. Right. Well, the thing about it is
- 18:31Speaker 1: that you your your business is broken down and I
- 18:34Speaker 1: see it's as social media marketing and managed media, photography
- 18:38Speaker 1: and vieography, copyrighting, graphic design, website desip. It started with
- 18:43Speaker 1: the two of you, Okay, how did you make the
- 18:46Speaker 1: decision that, Okay, this is the company that we want
- 18:49Speaker 1: because everybody you know you have a skill set, like
- 18:51Speaker 1: you said, insurance, yours with social and so now you've
- 18:55Speaker 1: got a company and then you start interviewing people. How
- 18:58Speaker 1: did you go through that process? Because a lot of
- 19:00Speaker 1: people are doing this, so I'm not saying doing exactly
- 19:02Speaker 1: what you do, but they have an idea and then
- 19:04Speaker 1: they have to put the idea together and then you
- 19:06Speaker 1: guys are making joint decisions, which can be more difficult.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Instead of going I was just going down the road. God,
- 19:12Speaker 1: I want that building. I want to hire that person,
- 19:14Speaker 1: and I like those curtains. I like that that carpet.
- 19:17Speaker 1: You know, I want to pay that person that the
- 19:18Speaker 1: amount of money. How just explained to my my listeners
- 19:22Speaker 1: and viewers. How does working as a couple. What are
- 19:25Speaker 1: the pluses and the minuses of it? Because it does work? Yeah,
- 19:29Speaker 1: oh yeah, absolutely. I would say when we started the company,
- 19:33Speaker 1: I think we both shared an division that this was
- 19:35Speaker 1: the agency model, even though it was just starting with us,
- 19:38Speaker 1: So we knew that it wasn't just gonna be us
- 19:40Speaker 1: on by ourselves. And so once we reached a place
- 19:43Speaker 1: so we're named, we max our capacity. Um, we weren't
- 19:46Speaker 1: excelling like we used to, or maybe we were making
- 19:49Speaker 1: little mistakes that we didn't before. We're like, oh, I
- 19:51Speaker 1: think we need to hire more people to come in.
- 19:52Speaker 1: So we had contractors come in and we gave people opportunities.
- 19:57Speaker 1: But then we started to train people the MTM way
- 20:00Speaker 1: and then grow our business that way. That was a
- 20:02Speaker 1: bit more successful. But as far as like the pros
- 20:05Speaker 1: and cons of us being in business together, I think
- 20:09Speaker 1: we're always together and we love that. But we're always together,
- 20:13Speaker 1: you know what I mean? Cautioned, there's so much us.
- 20:16Speaker 1: The man sitting next to you, you gave him the coach.
- 20:20Speaker 1: I don't get this, Jared. You know she now she
- 20:22Speaker 1: can't get enough of you, and she she was just
- 20:25Speaker 1: giving you to the curb with the with the oh
- 20:27Speaker 1: thank you because I I you know, that's the thing,
- 20:29Speaker 1: you know when you because you guys have in a
- 20:31Speaker 1: few people on your show, you know, you know, the
- 20:34Speaker 1: worst thing in the world where people give you yes
- 20:35Speaker 1: no answers, how are you doing that? They find? Okay,
- 20:39Speaker 1: five teammates left here, So she was giving those yes
- 20:42Speaker 1: or no relationship responses now on my shelf. I can't
- 20:47Speaker 1: get enough of her. I worked with him all the time,
- 20:49Speaker 1: and she just smiling and just giggling and everything. What
- 20:53Speaker 1: did you do, brother, what did you do? Tell all
- 20:55Speaker 1: the men out in the world, what did you do
- 20:57Speaker 1: to turn the head of this fantast that's the woman
- 21:00Speaker 1: in your direction? So the top two things, thank you,
- 21:06Speaker 1: but I'm gonna leave the third one out. You're gonna
- 21:08Speaker 1: have to you know, one day, but gave us all
- 21:11Speaker 1: the answers supposedly, but he didn't tell us how to
- 21:14Speaker 1: deal with a cold shoulder for six months. So the
- 21:17Speaker 1: number one thing is to stay committed to your original
- 21:20Speaker 1: intention envision. I like that. I like that because if
- 21:23Speaker 1: they feel like your attention is only on them or
- 21:27Speaker 1: you can deviate because of what they do, then it's like,
- 21:31Speaker 1: hold on, who's driving. So if I'm still heading towards
- 21:34Speaker 1: my vision, I'm still heading towards my goal and number two,
- 21:38Speaker 1: getting results towards that. Who doesn't want to have a
- 21:42Speaker 1: championship winning team in their corner, right, So that's what
- 21:47Speaker 1: I created in my atmosphere was if I keep winning
- 21:50Speaker 1: in this direction, what she knows her destiny is lined
- 21:52Speaker 1: up to the things that she's acclimated towards her that
- 21:55Speaker 1: she likes. She's gonna see me because either I'll be
- 21:58Speaker 1: on stage, I'm gonna put somebody on the stage. I'm
- 22:00Speaker 1: gonna create an atmosphere. So either coming to my show
- 22:02Speaker 1: with me or you come to my shown audience by yourself.
- 22:05Speaker 1: So you're gonna you're gonna be over here either way.
- 22:08Speaker 1: So at the end of the day, My top two
- 22:10Speaker 1: things that staying committed to your original goal and get
- 22:13Speaker 1: results along the way. And because of that, it's like, hey,
- 22:16Speaker 1: why would I not want to be on a winning team?
- 22:19Speaker 1: And I think that's one of The third one is
- 22:22Speaker 1: really the the best one. I'm gonna leave that one later.
- 22:25Speaker 1: But this for the book you're gonna write one day
- 22:28Speaker 1: the six months chase you know how to when they
- 22:32Speaker 1: say no, keep going. This is fun and this is
- 22:35Speaker 1: an enlightening uh. But it's also about businesses also about relationships,
- 22:39Speaker 1: you know, and I think that's important that people understand
- 22:42Speaker 1: that even if you're not in a personal relationship as
- 22:44Speaker 1: you two are, it is about communication, yes, and that's
- 22:49Speaker 1: the key, not only communication between each other, but your
- 22:51Speaker 1: staff and also your clients. Can you give us some
- 22:54Speaker 1: advised Kiara, I said the right correct? Ye want to
- 22:58Speaker 1: make sure you I closed the show right, Um deviating
- 23:02Speaker 1: and Jared. Communication first with your clients and then second
- 23:06Speaker 1: with each other, and then third with your employees. Start
- 23:09Speaker 1: with you, Jared, okay, Um. So I would definitely say
- 23:13Speaker 1: communication with the clients are key. The reason why I
- 23:16Speaker 1: say that's key is I'm big on relationships. That's what
- 23:19Speaker 1: you can see if I've already talked about the cold
- 23:21Speaker 1: shorter situation with my wife, right, So having a marketing agency,
- 23:25Speaker 1: the whole world is giving you a cold shoulder because
- 23:27Speaker 1: they don't know you exist. They don't know your voice,
- 23:29Speaker 1: they don't know your vision, they don't know your values,
- 23:31Speaker 1: they don't know any of that stuff. So you automatically
- 23:34Speaker 1: come to the stage unknown, unincluded, uninvited. So when you're
- 23:40Speaker 1: putting out a marketing campaign, you're making a website, you're
- 23:42Speaker 1: doing LinkedIn, TikTok, whatever case may be, they don't want
- 23:45Speaker 1: to like your posts, they don't want to engage in
- 23:47Speaker 1: your content. You're getting the cold shoulder. However, when you
- 23:50Speaker 1: tie that back to UM, your long term vision, what
- 23:54Speaker 1: you want to create, and getting results along the way,
- 23:56Speaker 1: then it opens up everyone's awareness. And I'll give you
- 23:59Speaker 1: a quick example. We have one of our neighbors that
- 24:02Speaker 1: lives about seven houses down before he moved and UM,
- 24:06Speaker 1: we did a free consultation for him. Long story short, UM,
- 24:10Speaker 1: before we started the UH the marketing agency, we had
- 24:14Speaker 1: a consulting deal that we were always doing and offering that.
- 24:17Speaker 1: That's how I started finding the need in the insurance
- 24:19Speaker 1: business that would bring us down Hey, how will we
- 24:22Speaker 1: market this? All right, cool, let's do that. That turns
- 24:24Speaker 1: into a multimillion dollar opportunity. I'm like, what's my percentage? Oh,
- 24:29Speaker 1: you work in sales. You don't get percentage of the marketing.
- 24:31Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, well, let me start doing this on
- 24:33Speaker 1: my own. That is, I told my neighbor we had
- 24:36Speaker 1: a three step process, and I was like, Hey, we're
- 24:39Speaker 1: gonna work on number one, work on number two, working
- 24:41Speaker 1: number three. He immediately went to implement. In twenty eight days,
- 24:45Speaker 1: he made thirty thousand dollars and the next thirty days
- 24:50Speaker 1: he made another ninety thousand. He was like, this stuff,
- 24:52Speaker 1: this plan that you gave me works. And the reason
- 24:55Speaker 1: why I say that is that ties back to communication.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Is I was able to sit down and understand his
- 25:00Speaker 1: voice is visiting this value, but him in this step
- 25:03Speaker 1: to where he can maximize that, and you have to listen. First.
- 25:06Speaker 1: Most communication is listening, and um that's what I learned
- 25:10Speaker 1: to do. And then we have to turn in that
- 25:12Speaker 1: to a process that they could actually have. It's a
- 25:14Speaker 1: predictable step. Next, what would you say about that? Um?
- 25:17Speaker 1: I would say for me, when it comes to communicating
- 25:20Speaker 1: with clients is all about seting expectation. So we can
- 25:23Speaker 1: never assume that our clients know us, know what we
- 25:27Speaker 1: stand for, and know just the processes that we have
- 25:29Speaker 1: in our business. So I really love to let them know, Hey,
- 25:33Speaker 1: this is what we're gonna do for you, this is
- 25:35Speaker 1: how we're gonna do it. These are our business hours.
- 25:37Speaker 1: This is how you can expect me to communicate with you.
- 25:40Speaker 1: And I found that when we set the expectation up front,
- 25:43Speaker 1: we don't get you know, issues later on about you
- 25:46Speaker 1: didn't text me back, or you didn't call me that
- 25:48Speaker 1: we'll text. You don't really text our clients, but you
- 25:50Speaker 1: didn't call me back. Um, during this time, Well, you
- 25:53Speaker 1: already knew an advance that this is our these are
- 25:55Speaker 1: business hours, and we really stick to that because we're
- 25:58Speaker 1: family preneurers, so this is we do all these things together.
- 26:01Speaker 1: We have to set those boundaries. So that's a big
- 26:03Speaker 1: for me setting those expectations with clients. Talk about relationship
- 26:07Speaker 1: communication through the relationship, UM, I would say that's pivotal. UM.
- 26:13Speaker 1: I believe our level of of intimate conversations overflows and
- 26:18Speaker 1: every other aspect of our life, so it makes it
- 26:20Speaker 1: easier to communicate effectively with our clients, but with our
- 26:23Speaker 1: team because we've gone through those rough patches and back
- 26:26Speaker 1: to the coach or the example, I'm still communicating stuff
- 26:29Speaker 1: even though she's not responding, So how can I still
- 26:32Speaker 1: get this message delivered even if you don't want to
- 26:35Speaker 1: receive the mail. So that same process of going through
- 26:39Speaker 1: that and now that she does want to be around
- 26:41Speaker 1: and that she does want to hear everything, that is
- 26:44Speaker 1: a is a wonderful change, right. But being intentional about
- 26:48Speaker 1: going through that process and saying, hey, I want to
- 26:50Speaker 1: talk with you so I can actually hear your heart
- 26:53Speaker 1: and not miss something. And this is one of the
- 26:56Speaker 1: pivotal things. Is a lot of times people only try
- 26:59Speaker 1: to give their pain in in their direction without including
- 27:02Speaker 1: another person. So how we set up our business was
- 27:04Speaker 1: intentionally car has fifty one and I have the reason
- 27:09Speaker 1: why that was important to me because I wanted to
- 27:11Speaker 1: communicate from the front even though this was a vision
- 27:14Speaker 1: that I had. I want you so invested in the
- 27:18Speaker 1: vision and you to profit so much from the vision
- 27:20Speaker 1: that even though we're gonna make a ton of money here,
- 27:23Speaker 1: I'm putting us lead ownership, right, And that gives a
- 27:27Speaker 1: totally different level of buying and when you have that
- 27:30Speaker 1: level of buying. Now, I don't have to only be
- 27:32Speaker 1: the one that's passionate about the pursuit right hold on,
- 27:37Speaker 1: I was always passionate once I got on board, once
- 27:39Speaker 1: you got on time. But though you give should be passion.
- 27:47Speaker 1: The last one that I'm going to talk about, which
- 27:49Speaker 1: is really the key, your employees. And that's where so
- 27:52Speaker 1: many people fail, you know, because sometimes when you have employees,
- 27:56Speaker 1: you can be too personal. You can be more concerned
- 27:58Speaker 1: about there there, their rent being paid, they gash their fields,
- 28:05Speaker 1: but not concerned about the work they're doing. You gotta
- 28:09Speaker 1: be able to build that wall of separation. Look, I
- 28:12Speaker 1: want to win two. I cannot personalize your issues, nor
- 28:16Speaker 1: could I be consumed by your personal issues as owners.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Please tell people how I want to hear from both
- 28:23Speaker 1: of you guys, because I know y'all deal with them differently.
- 28:26Speaker 1: How do y'all deal with employees and separately and then together? Yes,
- 28:31Speaker 1: that is such a great question. And can I say
- 28:33Speaker 1: we made a number of mistakes along the way. Um,
- 28:36Speaker 1: one of our mentors had to set us inside and say, hey,
- 28:39Speaker 1: you don't owe anyone an opportunity, don't owe anyone an opportunity.
- 28:44Speaker 1: It is a it's an opportunity for them to work
- 28:46Speaker 1: with you, Like, you don't have to give them these things.
- 28:49Speaker 1: You built this company yourself. And then once I recognize
- 28:52Speaker 1: that I'm a wealth builder, I have we've created this
- 28:56Speaker 1: thing together. We don't have to allow anyone within our company.
- 29:00Speaker 1: So we have made decisions before it's like, well, I
- 29:02Speaker 1: just want to help someone out because we know that
- 29:04Speaker 1: they're an unfortunate situation. I think they have a good
- 29:07Speaker 1: skill set, the will work. And then we recognize that, oh,
- 29:10Speaker 1: that was the best thing. But because we are big
- 29:13Speaker 1: on relationships, we let them know, hey, before we even
- 29:16Speaker 1: start this, our relationship is more important than the money.
- 29:18Speaker 1: So we would still able to have great, great relationships
- 29:22Speaker 1: with those people that are no longer with the company,
- 29:24Speaker 1: but moving forward, we had to let them know that, hey,
- 29:27Speaker 1: you're going to see a different side of me. I
- 29:29Speaker 1: know we were sitting whatever before, but now I'm c
- 29:32Speaker 1: O and this is what we're doing X, Y and Z,
- 29:34Speaker 1: and knowing that, hey, we know how to create boundaries
- 29:38Speaker 1: and relationships, but I still follow up with I still
- 29:41Speaker 1: love you and we can have conversations outside of business afterwards.
- 29:44Speaker 1: It kind of creates a great balance, but before we
- 29:47Speaker 1: weren't as great with that. I would say, that's my
- 29:49Speaker 1: part about you. I carry the same passion that as
- 29:54Speaker 1: we just displayed in different ways. So I'm big on
- 29:57Speaker 1: philosophy and strategy. So my us BEE, in connection with
- 30:00Speaker 1: our our team members and everybody on our team is
- 30:04Speaker 1: a three three sed element. Its content consistently conversion to
- 30:08Speaker 1: what you alluded to a little earlier. But on the
- 30:10Speaker 1: personal level, I always talked about skill set structure set
- 30:14Speaker 1: equals your income set. And what I mean by that
- 30:16Speaker 1: is this, if you have a skill, let's say you're
- 30:18Speaker 1: a photographer, fantastic you can shoot photos. And with you
- 30:22Speaker 1: being able to shoot and do this and do that,
- 30:24Speaker 1: do you have a structure around it on your own
- 30:27Speaker 1: to where now we can expect a certain amount of
- 30:29Speaker 1: photos of certain my images, certain amount of quality, which
- 30:33Speaker 1: denotes a certain amount of pay. And no matter what
- 30:36Speaker 1: that skill set is, my mindset for everybody on the
- 30:39Speaker 1: team and around the team is if we can help
- 30:42Speaker 1: you maximize your skill, we can help you maximize your structure.
- 30:46Speaker 1: That means we can help you maximize your income. So
- 30:48Speaker 1: I was just given um an example to one of
- 30:51Speaker 1: our team members yesterday and one of our photographers started
- 30:55Speaker 1: at twenty an hour with our tea and then I
- 30:58Speaker 1: was like, hey, you have an eye, but we got
- 31:01Speaker 1: to fix this. Let's change your editing, let's do this,
- 31:04Speaker 1: let's do that, and let's put some structure behind that.
- 31:06Speaker 1: And once he captured that skill set, we bumped him
- 31:09Speaker 1: up to fifty dollars in a hundred, then one fifty,
- 31:12Speaker 1: and then you keep going from there and it's like,
- 31:14Speaker 1: hold on, why would you invest so much in this
- 31:17Speaker 1: one person or this group of people. It's because as
- 31:20Speaker 1: they're expanding in their exposure and they're expanding in their expertise.
- 31:24Speaker 1: Our team is expanding an exposure. Our team isn't isn't
- 31:27Speaker 1: expanding in expertise. And the beautiful thing is about that
- 31:30Speaker 1: is somebody might see that one team member out somewhere
- 31:33Speaker 1: and they're like, oh, you do this. I saw you
- 31:36Speaker 1: put this on your Instagram, I saw you put this
- 31:38Speaker 1: on your TikTok or your LinkedIn. Where are you doing
- 31:40Speaker 1: that at? Then they bring it back to make the
- 31:42Speaker 1: maxipplize and then that grows all of us. Now it's like,
- 31:45Speaker 1: hold on, I never even would have got here unless
- 31:48Speaker 1: you told me how to maximize my skill set. It
- 31:50Speaker 1: unless you show me how to maximize my structure. And
- 31:53Speaker 1: now all of our income grows together, so it's really
- 31:56Speaker 1: a group thing. Awesome. I appreciate you both coming on
- 31:59Speaker 1: Money Conversation master class has been uh of a journey
- 32:03Speaker 1: of emotion, of of how to talk as a relationship,
- 32:08Speaker 1: how to talk as a business, how to build a business,
- 32:11Speaker 1: but more importantly communication. That's my biggest takeaway in this
- 32:15Speaker 1: interview that I'm doing with both of you guys. But again,
- 32:17Speaker 1: much success to made to maximize the company that was
- 32:20Speaker 1: starting Twining nineteen and Kara and Jared Mason, I wish

- 33:33Speaker 1: discussed the importance of applying strategy to finances and share
- 33:36Speaker 1: the difference between a thinker and a dreamer. I talked
- 33:39Speaker 1: about the personality of an entrepreneur and and that one
- 33:43Speaker 1: of them is the dreamer. The dreamer things everything is
- 33:46Speaker 1: gonna be great. The dreamer thinks that this idea is
- 33:49Speaker 1: a great idea, and it probably is. But if you
- 33:51Speaker 1: don't have a thinker, see see that's what you have said,
- 33:54Speaker 1: Mr McDonald a thinker. The singer is the strategist. The
- 33:57Speaker 1: thinker is gonna ask all the questions that the name
- 34:00Speaker 1: or doesn't want to hear. The thinker's gonna say, now,
- 34:02Speaker 1: how are we going to do this? What is the plan?
- 34:04Speaker 1: How are we going to roll this down? Who are
- 34:06Speaker 1: we in business with? How much does it call? How
- 34:09Speaker 1: much workers that it actually take? Uh? And so on.
- 34:11Speaker 1: You can listen to this full interview with Dr Lan
- 34:14Speaker 1: Richardson is available on money Making Conversations dot com. Now,
- 34:17Speaker 1: let's return to Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rashan McDonald
- 34:22Speaker 1: my next guest. He's on the phone Maco A. Brown.
- 34:25Speaker 1: He's the president and CEO of System five Electronics, the
- 34:29Speaker 1: largest or repeat, the largest African American owned and operated
- 34:33Speaker 1: security alarm and monitoring company in the state of Georgia.
- 34:36Speaker 1: In his role, he directs daily operations, implements strategies for success,
- 34:41Speaker 1: creates product distinctions, and positions his company as an industry leader,
- 34:45Speaker 1: something I am always striving for. My wife said, why
- 34:48Speaker 1: are you doing three meetings all the time? You always
- 34:50Speaker 1: do these meeting You're always meeting, you always meeting. I said,
- 34:52Speaker 1: because I have something in my head. I want to
- 34:54Speaker 1: share and if you don't tell people, then sometimes they
- 34:57Speaker 1: might not understand how passionate you are all about that
- 35:00Speaker 1: aside for being a successful entrepreneur. Mr Brown is the
- 35:03Speaker 1: founder of MA SEO m A CEO Mentoring Aspiring CEOs Kids,
- 35:11Speaker 1: a nonprofit organization created to pair African American youth with
- 35:14Speaker 1: mentors and effort to foster and entrepreneurial spirit. The nonprofit
- 35:18Speaker 1: provides opportunity for young men and women to learn the
- 35:21Speaker 1: importance of economic empowerment, community development, and enrichment. Please work
- 35:27Speaker 1: on the Money Making Conversation master Class, May Seo. A. Brown. Welcome, sir,
- 35:33Speaker 1: so good to be here, Good to be here. Did
- 35:35Speaker 1: I get it all out? Did I get it all out? Yes?
- 35:37Speaker 1: You did? Yes you did. I appreciate that. I really do.
- 35:41Speaker 1: Thank you so much. Well, first of all, I appreciate
- 35:43Speaker 1: you because you are a groundbreaker, trail blazer. You're doing
- 35:47Speaker 1: something that that that that that this and traditional and
- 35:50Speaker 1: the thought process of what we do. So I want
- 35:53Speaker 1: to go all the way back when you were when
- 35:55Speaker 1: you were thinking about this, what what? How did this
- 35:58Speaker 1: initial idea of getting into the security business. Were you
- 36:02Speaker 1: an employee somewhere? How did you learn this craft and
- 36:05Speaker 1: how did you go to the next level with that craft? Well,
- 36:09Speaker 1: I first came through the ib e W International Brotherhood
- 36:12Speaker 1: of Electrical Workers Local Union six thirteen. I was the
- 36:15Speaker 1: second set of African Americans to go through that program.
- 36:18Speaker 1: My dad always said, you know, if you learn a
- 36:20Speaker 1: trade Sunday, there is no glass ceiling. And then uh,
- 36:23Speaker 1: five years later, the Reagan administration economy tanked and so
- 36:27Speaker 1: I diversified and met a gentleman who was in the
- 36:30Speaker 1: security business and he told me about it and there
- 36:32Speaker 1: was a residual income. So I said, Okay, this is
- 36:34Speaker 1: a recession proof business. So I said, I need to
- 36:37Speaker 1: go ahead and get into that. So I sold all
- 36:40Speaker 1: my assets from Masiell Brown, Let's go contractors, and switched
- 36:43Speaker 1: over the system by with the atronics. I went back
- 36:45Speaker 1: to the same customers houses that I wired throughout all
- 36:48Speaker 1: the southwest Atlanta and switched their services over. Then Rawlins
- 36:53Speaker 1: had the market, a d T had the market. They
- 36:57Speaker 1: welcomed me as a black entrepreneur to say, hey, we're
- 37:00Speaker 1: so proud to see you in this business. You know,
- 37:02Speaker 1: we want to spend our money with our own kind.
- 37:05Speaker 1: So you had an audience that that that was welcoming
- 37:09Speaker 1: him to But how did you win them over? Because
- 37:11Speaker 1: you know that there are stereotypes that black have about
- 37:14Speaker 1: blacks when it comes through entrepreneurship, the same service or
- 37:19Speaker 1: the same and sometimes the expectation a lot higher. Did
- 37:21Speaker 1: you have to deal with that in early years or
- 37:23Speaker 1: even today. Well, you know, I took seven kids out
- 37:26Speaker 1: of high school that was not college bound. I started
- 37:29Speaker 1: teaching them the same books I learned through ib W
- 37:32Speaker 1: dress code, the way you speak yes sir, yesterdam you know,
- 37:35Speaker 1: and that was so important when my customers saw my
- 37:38Speaker 1: young men approaching them, you know, and the way they
- 37:41Speaker 1: came up to him, and I taught them all about
- 37:43Speaker 1: how to be polite to these people. You know, they
- 37:46Speaker 1: kept calling me back and saying, I'm really proud of
- 37:48Speaker 1: what you're doing with these young people. You know, I
- 37:50Speaker 1: have not experienced them because you know, a lot of us,
- 37:52Speaker 1: like you said, stereotyped. We don't like our young men
- 37:55Speaker 1: coming up to us a certain way. You know, they
- 37:57Speaker 1: have to be groom you know, we we make should
- 38:00Speaker 1: that you have a neat appearance, and uh, you know
- 38:03Speaker 1: that kind of win them over at that point in time,
- 38:05Speaker 1: because you know, they learned that you know, when they
- 38:07Speaker 1: see me, Macio Brown, the people that work for me
- 38:10Speaker 1: represent me. They look like me, they are a part
- 38:13Speaker 1: of me, They're gonna act like me. So you know,
- 38:16Speaker 1: now that really worked out very very well. You know,
- 38:19Speaker 1: strong values is everything. And once you teach a kid
- 38:22Speaker 1: that in the classroom setting, you know, you you impact
- 38:25Speaker 1: their life going forward. You know, it helps them to
- 38:28Speaker 1: become a father figure, you know, in their own homes
- 38:31Speaker 1: and and go back and say, you know, I can
- 38:33Speaker 1: raise a child because you know some of them they
- 38:35Speaker 1: didn't have that father with them at that time. So
- 38:38Speaker 1: you know, I really talk a lot of that, especially
- 38:40Speaker 1: as how economic empowerment, how you save your money, how
- 38:44Speaker 1: you're supposed to spend it on, you know, wasteful things.
- 38:47Speaker 1: You know, you want to make sure you invest your
- 38:49Speaker 1: money so you can grow. So a lot of these
- 38:52Speaker 1: things that they don't teach in the high school system today,
- 38:54Speaker 1: which should be taught. You know, we can help elevate
- 38:57Speaker 1: our kids much faster. Man was picking a mac or
- 39:01Speaker 1: a Brown. He's the president and CEO of System five Electronics,
- 39:04Speaker 1: the largest African American owned and operated security, a law
- 39:08Speaker 1: and monitoring company in the state of Georgia. Massy you
- 39:11Speaker 1: can talk your articulate. When did you realize you could
- 39:15Speaker 1: communicate and people responded to the way you communicated? Well?
- 39:20Speaker 1: I was always honest, church going. My mother went to
- 39:23Speaker 1: church on Saturday. She's a seventh in Adventice. My father
- 39:26Speaker 1: was a Baptist with with the churchiose Sunday and then
- 39:29Speaker 1: we had Bible study on the Wednesday. So uh, you
- 39:33Speaker 1: know that kind of helped me along. And meeting people.
- 39:35Speaker 1: I always network with people, shake a lot of hands
- 39:38Speaker 1: and make you I mean in front of a lot
- 39:40Speaker 1: of people. And then you know, I had three other
- 39:42Speaker 1: brothers that was role models in front of me. My
- 39:45Speaker 1: oldest brother was Milton. He worked for the ib W,
- 39:48Speaker 1: I mean the IBM. He came to Georgia Tech. And
- 39:52Speaker 1: then my other brother Thomas Brown, he ended up being
- 39:54Speaker 1: the shaff of the Cap County and now he's nominated
- 39:57Speaker 1: for us Marshall. And then my other brother, Whinn't the Brown.
- 40:00Speaker 1: You know, both of us went through the ibu W.
- 40:03Speaker 1: So you know, the trade was really helped us along
- 40:05Speaker 1: the way and making that really happen because you know
- 40:08Speaker 1: a lot of these kids they don't know about the trade.
- 40:10Speaker 1: Electrical plumbing carpenter heating in there. You know, these are
- 40:14Speaker 1: jobs that you can make end this amount of money,
- 40:16Speaker 1: you know, learning the trade and developing yourself in the
- 40:19Speaker 1: right direction going forward. We always tell like my daughter,
- 40:23Speaker 1: she recently graduated from college, and I was fortunate to
- 40:26Speaker 1: graduate from college a degree in mathematics and the mining
- 40:29Speaker 1: and sociology. And I always tell people they can't repull
- 40:32Speaker 1: your degree. You know, once once you learn that like
- 40:34Speaker 1: the same thing that you're saying with the trade, once
- 40:37Speaker 1: you learn that trade, you know you you you know
- 40:39Speaker 1: your your your recession proof as long as you're willing
- 40:42Speaker 1: to put the work in Now. Of course, all trades
- 40:46Speaker 1: on glamour glamorous, like all degrees on glamorous. Everybody wants
- 40:49Speaker 1: us wants the glamour. They wants to wants to shine,
- 40:52Speaker 1: They want them to be sparkled. They want to pick
- 40:54Speaker 1: up gold. When they started me lead mining for gold.
- 40:57Speaker 1: But that isn't the opportunities that are available out there.
- 41:00Speaker 1: And then the younger generation, whether it's Gen Z or
- 41:03Speaker 1: the millennials, it's such a bad rap about their dreams.
- 41:07Speaker 1: You're out there in the workplace, the hiring place. You know,
- 41:10Speaker 1: you've got one of the largest companies in this in
- 41:12Speaker 1: the State of Georgia. Tell us your perception and I'm
- 41:15Speaker 1: saying this it's something that's lockdown or the truth. But
- 41:19Speaker 1: we all have perceptions, like I have perceptions. When people
- 41:21Speaker 1: are starting to say things about what this is what
- 41:24Speaker 1: millennials want, they want to they want to take the
- 41:26Speaker 1: short caulor gen zs gen zs. They don't want to
- 41:29Speaker 1: they don't want to work hard. What is your perspective
- 41:31Speaker 1: of the of the of the viable work environment out there, sir, Well,
- 41:36Speaker 1: you know you gotta find a unique child, you know,
- 41:39Speaker 1: somebody who's driven. You know, when you do your interview process,
- 41:43Speaker 1: you always asking what's your five year plan? You know,
- 41:46Speaker 1: if if they can't give you a good answer the
- 41:47Speaker 1: five year plan and nine times of team, you got
- 41:50Speaker 1: the wrong candidate. You know, you want to make sure
- 41:54Speaker 1: somebody wants to inspire to be something. And if they
- 41:57Speaker 1: want to inspire to be something, then you can break
- 42:00Speaker 1: them into your business and say, hey, you can grow
- 42:02Speaker 1: with this company. I can put you a part of
- 42:04Speaker 1: or either whether you're in accounting department, whether you're in
- 42:07Speaker 1: the marketing department, or whether you wanted my leave text
- 42:10Speaker 1: out in the field, or whether you're working in the
- 42:12Speaker 1: service department where you only do a service work, and
- 42:15Speaker 1: then let them see what the future lie for them,
- 42:17Speaker 1: you know, saying one year, you're gonna be making this
- 42:19Speaker 1: amount of money. In three years, you make this amount
- 42:21Speaker 1: of money, and you're creating sentence for them. You know.
- 42:24Speaker 1: I tell my employees, you know, once they get over
- 42:26Speaker 1: five years, they own a certain percentage of my company.
- 42:29Speaker 1: When they when they get ten years, they own another
- 42:31Speaker 1: percentage of my company. So I learned that, you know,
- 42:34Speaker 1: giving back because you know, this is God's house. I
- 42:37Speaker 1: don't own this company completely. You know, God help me build.
- 42:39Speaker 1: This company is not mine. I can't take it with me.
- 42:42Speaker 1: But if I give back a portion of it to
- 42:44Speaker 1: my employees, I'm gonna I'm gonna create a loan ungevity
- 42:48Speaker 1: here for the people that's going to be here, and
- 42:50Speaker 1: I'm creating generational wealth at the same time, so I
- 42:53Speaker 1: know my legacy is going to continue to go forward.
- 42:55Speaker 1: So those are the things I try to inspire kids
- 42:58Speaker 1: and just just let them know what used to. But
- 43:00Speaker 1: you know, if they want to open up that business
- 43:02Speaker 1: at some point in time, because I'm gonna always wish
- 43:04Speaker 1: them well, that mean it's not an easy task to do.
- 43:06Speaker 1: It takes a lot to get to get a company
- 43:09Speaker 1: off the ground. But you gotta be motivated. I mean
- 43:11Speaker 1: you gotta eat, sleep, and drink your company. You gotta
- 43:14Speaker 1: know every day you wake up, you're creating a new idea.
- 43:17Speaker 1: You having meetings, you know, at least every week or
- 43:20Speaker 1: every two weeks with your your team, so you could
- 43:22Speaker 1: create uh new ideas and things that we're working on.
- 43:25Speaker 1: It may not be a good direction for is that
- 43:29Speaker 1: we want to change. You know, job costs is so important,
- 43:31Speaker 1: so you know you really want to make sure you
- 43:33Speaker 1: stir on job costs. How much money we make when
- 43:35Speaker 1: we do this type of job. How much money we're
- 43:37Speaker 1: making here. And you know, policies are everything. You know,
- 43:40Speaker 1: we use tracking devices and all our vehicles. We already
- 43:43Speaker 1: know what time you're gonna get that, what time you're
- 43:44Speaker 1: gonna leave, so we can always tell the customer. You know,
- 43:47Speaker 1: my driver showed up at eight thirty, he left at
- 43:50Speaker 1: nine o'clock. You know they door tacked the door. So
- 43:53Speaker 1: we let the customers know that we're gonna make all
- 43:55Speaker 1: the efforts possible to be able to give you quality
- 43:59Speaker 1: of service. We're gonna be the first one there, we're
- 44:01Speaker 1: gonna be on time. We're not gonna be running late.
- 44:03Speaker 1: If we're five minutes late, we're gonna pick up the
- 44:05Speaker 1: phone and make that call. Let the customer no, we're
- 44:07Speaker 1: running five minutes late. People want to see that out
- 44:10Speaker 1: of an African American company. They don't just want to
- 44:13Speaker 1: see you just show up and then give an excuse.
- 44:16Speaker 1: You want to make sure you plan ahead, so you're
- 44:18Speaker 1: letting the end user know that, Hey, we appreciate your business.
- 44:21Speaker 1: We appreciate everything you're doing. Because at the end of
- 44:23Speaker 1: the day, I tell my employees, you don't really work
- 44:25Speaker 1: for me, you work for the customer. Un Once you
- 44:28Speaker 1: buy into that that you work for the customer, the
- 44:31Speaker 1: customer is gonna always give you the business. You know,
- 44:34Speaker 1: if it costs us fifty dollars to acquire a new customer,
- 44:38Speaker 1: because we have a gearback program, fifty dollars to refer
- 44:40Speaker 1: us to someone. When you're referred by a customer, it's
- 44:44Speaker 1: easy for your sales team to go out and there
- 44:46Speaker 1: close that deal because they're referred by someone who's very
- 44:49Speaker 1: satisfied with what you have done, whereas opposed to someone
- 44:53Speaker 1: googles your company and then you go out there, you've
- 44:56Speaker 1: got to really make an impression in order to win
- 44:58Speaker 1: that business over. So we work with a lot of
- 45:01Speaker 1: black churches. I go out and do get speaking and
- 45:03Speaker 1: talk about something. Let me hold that thought though, because
- 45:07Speaker 1: you're on the role. You are dropping jewels, my friend.
- 45:10Speaker 1: Keep that energy up. We're gonna come back after this
- 45:12Speaker 1: break and we're gonna continue because you're saying what I
- 45:15Speaker 1: see every day on this show, but you're saying it
- 45:16Speaker 1: from a standpoint of way more power. You employ people,
- 45:21Speaker 1: your brand, your institution. In this state. What you're saying
- 45:24Speaker 1: is inspiring stuff, but it's also consistent stuff about putting
- 45:28Speaker 1: that client first. You hear that a lot. You always say,
- 45:30Speaker 1: you know, the customer is always right. You hear that,
- 45:33Speaker 1: but you really that's part of your mantra, correct, right.
- 45:37Speaker 1: You got to sell yourself first, and then you sell
- 45:39Speaker 1: the company. Then you sell the product. Because if I
- 45:41Speaker 1: don't like you from the beginning, I'm not going to
- 45:43Speaker 1: buy your product. So you have to let the customer know.
- 45:47Speaker 1: I'm an honest person. I'm gonna be fair with you.
- 45:49Speaker 1: I'm gonna show you my price book. I'm gonna show
- 45:52Speaker 1: you how I compare with other companies to show you
- 45:55Speaker 1: that I'm saving you money. And these are some of
- 45:57Speaker 1: the things I teach my sales team when they go
- 45:59Speaker 1: out because a lot of companies can tell you different
- 46:02Speaker 1: things and say, hey, we can put a system in free,
- 46:05Speaker 1: and then they charge you fifty sixty dollars a month. Well,
- 46:07Speaker 1: a lot of us don't do the math. So if
- 46:10Speaker 1: you get a system from US and you're paying twenty
- 46:12Speaker 1: six or four dollars per month, and you subtracted from
- 46:15Speaker 1: that fifties sixty times that your contract, you just bought
- 46:19Speaker 1: my system three times. So when you show that to
- 46:23Speaker 1: the end user, they realized, wow, I'm saving money by
- 46:27Speaker 1: investing up front to buy the system on the system,
- 46:30Speaker 1: then I got to earn your business from that point on.
- 46:33Speaker 1: So that makes you have very service driven you know,
- 46:36Speaker 1: we have to be service driven. We want to make
- 46:38Speaker 1: sure we turn the service call around in less than
- 46:41Speaker 1: two days if you're having the problem. If we can't
- 46:43Speaker 1: get it that day, we're gonna try to get it
- 46:45Speaker 1: the next day. And that's so important to me. You know,
- 46:47Speaker 1: I'm fortunate that I have I own a building and
- 46:50Speaker 1: when I get a service call, you know, they send
- 46:53Speaker 1: your you know, they text you photos now because of
- 46:55Speaker 1: the security issues of COVID, there's so many rules, so
- 46:59Speaker 1: you had to change your game a little bit. With COVID.
- 47:01Speaker 1: Happened hit because your service had to be because you
- 47:05Speaker 1: are an installation company. Correct your monitoring company, but you
- 47:09Speaker 1: do installations, so you're going people home, you go into business.
- 47:11Speaker 1: How did that impact you as a business. Well, I've
- 47:16Speaker 1: gone through three recessions, uh, and we've got out both.
- 47:20Speaker 1: All three were not a problem. I mean this lasting
- 47:22Speaker 1: with COVID. We did very well without numbers because most
- 47:25Speaker 1: people were at home and back because they were working
- 47:28Speaker 1: from home. They wanted to get their system service. They
- 47:31Speaker 1: wanted to make sure all their devices was working. So
- 47:33Speaker 1: when my technicians show up, you know, they got to
- 47:35Speaker 1: have the booties on. They got to make sure they
- 47:37Speaker 1: don't walk in there with shoes on. They got something
- 47:39Speaker 1: to cover up their shoes. They got to make sure
- 47:42Speaker 1: they're wearing a mask properly, and they're always cleaning up.
- 47:45Speaker 1: They're not the customer can't say I don't worry about that,
- 47:48Speaker 1: I'll pick that up. No, ma'am, give me your vacuum.
- 47:50Speaker 1: I'm going to pick that up. So we make sure
- 47:52Speaker 1: that we strive up of that, because you know, good
- 47:55Speaker 1: news never go around. Bad news always travel. It is
- 48:00Speaker 1: a little speed on that bad news. It's called little speed.
- 48:02Speaker 1: I know that for a fact. We have a call
- 48:04Speaker 1: a right quick up? May see all want to take
- 48:06Speaker 1: them right quick maybell from an Athens, Georgia. How are
- 48:09Speaker 1: you doing this? Ra Sean McDonald, I'm doing well? How
- 48:13Speaker 1: are you pretty good? Maybe? What what's your question? Um? So?
- 48:17Speaker 1: My question to Mr Brown is, as a mother of
- 48:21Speaker 1: a fourteen, sixteen, and eighteen year old African American bells,
- 48:26Speaker 1: how do I encourage them to do better and be
- 48:29Speaker 1: gentleman without belittleing them. What you should do is you
- 48:35Speaker 1: should sit down with them with my non profit. I
- 48:38Speaker 1: had my kids. I took them out to Mirror Lakes,
- 48:41Speaker 1: uh and a lot of them have never seen some
- 48:43Speaker 1: of these larger homes before. A lot of us is
- 48:45Speaker 1: a lack of exposure. We don't get within the ten
- 48:48Speaker 1: mile radius of where we live. So when you show
- 48:51Speaker 1: them a larger home at a younger age, they said, wow,
- 48:53Speaker 1: I would like to live like that. And then you
- 48:55Speaker 1: take them back and say, let's do a budget at home.
- 48:58Speaker 1: How much is my life beal? How much just a
- 49:00Speaker 1: gas bill, how much is the water bill? How much
- 49:02Speaker 1: we have to pay for insurance. You lay out all
- 49:05Speaker 1: of those areas that you have to pay bills inside
- 49:07Speaker 1: the house, your car, your car insurance, and then you
- 49:11Speaker 1: add them all up for a month, and then you say, Okay,
- 49:14Speaker 1: if I go to work for McDonald's and I make
- 49:16Speaker 1: it ten dollars an hour, can I live in a
- 49:18Speaker 1: home like this? No, you can't. Okay, if if I
- 49:21Speaker 1: get AIDS or bees in school, then I'm gonna make
- 49:24Speaker 1: it far more money and I can live in a
- 49:26Speaker 1: home like that. So I think a lot of it
- 49:28Speaker 1: is we don't paint the picture from a finance situation
- 49:32Speaker 1: to where a kid has something that's gonna drive him
- 49:35Speaker 1: to want to be there. All kids have a passion
- 49:38Speaker 1: to be something. Once you tap into that passion, you
- 49:42Speaker 1: want to help them with that passion as much as possible,
- 49:45Speaker 1: But you gotta let them know that the smarter kids
- 49:48Speaker 1: are gonna live a better life. If you make average
- 49:52Speaker 1: seeds and ds, you're not gonna live a good life.
- 49:56Speaker 1: You make bees and a's or a's plus, you're gonna
- 50:00Speaker 1: of a great life because you're getting your work that
- 50:02Speaker 1: needs to be done. Because once you come out then
- 50:05Speaker 1: nine times of a team, especially if you're making straight a's,
- 50:08Speaker 1: you don't have to pay for that college education. You
- 50:11Speaker 1: already got to pay for. So you need to just
- 50:14Speaker 1: paint that picture with them early and say, listen, these
- 50:17Speaker 1: are the bills that mama has to pay. So then
- 50:19Speaker 1: they know how to cut the water faucet off at
- 50:22Speaker 1: a certain time and cut the light switch off. I
- 50:24Speaker 1: talked to my kids how to read the electrical meter,
- 50:26Speaker 1: how to read a water meter. So when they turned
- 50:29Speaker 1: that water meter owned, they see that dial spending, that's
- 50:33Speaker 1: how much money you wasting come into that. You turn
- 50:36Speaker 1: that light switch on and you see that thing spending,
- 50:39Speaker 1: then you already know you're wasting that amount of money
- 50:42Speaker 1: inside the house. So parents would call me back to
- 50:44Speaker 1: Mr Brod. I don't know what you told by stuff,
- 50:46Speaker 1: But every time he walks out of his room, returns
- 50:48Speaker 1: off the lights there, he never cuts the porto two.
- 50:51Speaker 1: He's ready to brush his teeth. You know, mentally, you
- 50:53Speaker 1: gotta feed that into their mind. My father was a
- 50:56Speaker 1: military guy. So the moment you wake up out of
- 50:58Speaker 1: the bed, first time you got do you gotta make
- 51:00Speaker 1: up the bed. When you make up the bed, you
- 51:02Speaker 1: gotta go in and brush your cheeth. You know it
- 51:04Speaker 1: was just a program, so you you haven't. I gotta
- 51:07Speaker 1: tell people, young people, it's like you're the programmer. You
- 51:11Speaker 1: have to program that child to do certain habits, good
- 51:15Speaker 1: habits that's gonna propel them to the top. And let
- 51:19Speaker 1: them know that you're not a follower. You're a leader.
- 51:22Speaker 1: I want you to be a leader, not a follower.
- 51:24Speaker 1: So I walk around with your pants hanging down, because
- 51:26Speaker 1: impression is everything. You don't want to be like someone.
- 51:30Speaker 1: You want to be the person they want to admire.
- 51:32Speaker 1: That's who I wanted to look like that person right there,
- 51:35Speaker 1: maybe even was he ever answer your question? Oh yes, sir,
- 51:40Speaker 1: that that was wonderful. Thank you so much, and I
- 51:43Speaker 1: will take key to to everything you're saying. Thank you
- 51:46Speaker 1: so much. And for shot, I love your show. I
- 51:48Speaker 1: lived in weekly. Keep doing what you're doing. I appreciate
- 51:51Speaker 1: the compliment. And but more importantly is my guests. They
- 51:53Speaker 1: come on the show and I want to share an
- 51:55Speaker 1: example about We'll be right back with more Money Making
- 51:58Speaker 1: Conversations master Class with Rushan McDonald. Now let's return to
- 52:05Speaker 1: Money Making Conversations Masterclass with Rashan McDonald I remember in
- 52:10Speaker 1: high school may see all Mr Brown. Um. I had
- 52:14Speaker 1: two friends, Regina Rodney who eventually graduates from Rice University,
- 52:18Speaker 1: and then it was Michelle Robbers who eventually graduated from
- 52:21Speaker 1: University of Port Due for the use firstly, and we
- 52:25Speaker 1: used to get in my little beat up seventy one
- 52:27Speaker 1: Pinto's Chocolate Brown and we used to drive to the
- 52:30Speaker 1: neighborhoods and we didn't live in and just look at
- 52:32Speaker 1: houses and look at yards and just see things that
- 52:36Speaker 1: would like and we were Wow. I go and I
- 52:38Speaker 1: would in and I would see cars that wouldn't in
- 52:42Speaker 1: my neighborhood because I grew up in a black neighborhood.
- 52:44Speaker 1: And I tell people this today. You know, when you
- 52:46Speaker 1: grew up in a black neighborhood, you get on the
- 52:48Speaker 1: bus with black people, when the bus would take you
- 52:51Speaker 1: downtown and drop you off with black people at and
- 52:54Speaker 1: you get back on that bus and then take you
- 52:56Speaker 1: back to black people. And so you have to take
- 52:59Speaker 1: people to see more than black people because you can
- 53:02Speaker 1: get trapped and believe in that's all you can be,
- 53:05Speaker 1: that's all you can see. And when I went to
- 53:08Speaker 1: and I would tell you I was, I would every
- 53:10Speaker 1: car that I saw as a kid, whether the sports
- 53:13Speaker 1: car was a Porsche of Merced, these bands or whatever.
- 53:16Speaker 1: I have been fortunate to buy those type of cars.
- 53:20Speaker 1: The homes that I live in, whether it was a
- 53:22Speaker 1: big yard or hedges or you know, gutters were black
- 53:25Speaker 1: and white brick that came from those driving through the
- 53:30Speaker 1: neighborhoods and looking at houses. And and so when I
- 53:33Speaker 1: went to buy my houses or when I went to
- 53:35Speaker 1: do my law, it was already in my head. My
- 53:38Speaker 1: wife would ask me, she said, how do you just
- 53:40Speaker 1: how do you just see this stuff? Because it's burned
- 53:43Speaker 1: in my brain. I've seen this as a kid, when
- 53:46Speaker 1: I was sixteen, seventeen eighteen, of saying that's what I want,
- 53:50Speaker 1: that's what I want. And when you keep saying that's
- 53:53Speaker 1: what you want, you position yourself to get it. And
- 53:56Speaker 1: when you get it, then guess what it changes everybody
- 54:00Speaker 1: around you. And that's all you're saying, break Mr Brown,
- 54:03Speaker 1: that's right, that's right. Because when I was in the
- 54:06Speaker 1: seventh grade, I used to care a briefcase to school.
- 54:08Speaker 1: People used to get on me about that briefcase. I said,
- 54:11Speaker 1: I would be episode of one day, you know, I
- 54:13Speaker 1: care of the case. I put my book to the briefcase.
- 54:16Speaker 1: You know, I kind of mentored out to my godfather,
- 54:18Speaker 1: Maysiel Newberry. He has a stolen buying city. You know.
- 54:21Speaker 1: He taught me how to stop the room and how
- 54:23Speaker 1: to position to kids and all that stuff and just
- 54:25Speaker 1: stay organized and need. So with this younger generation, you
- 54:28Speaker 1: gotta find that hotspot that that that passion of what
- 54:31Speaker 1: they want to be. But like you said, exposure is everything,
- 54:35Speaker 1: and then teaching them what does it really cost to
- 54:37Speaker 1: live so when they see a job, they know, Okay,
- 54:41Speaker 1: I want to live nice like this, So I gotta
- 54:43Speaker 1: get good grades in school if I want to live
- 54:45Speaker 1: like this. But like you said, you know, going around
- 54:48Speaker 1: and seeing other properties and going in other communities and
- 54:52Speaker 1: seeing these things, then you can inspire to be something.
- 54:55Speaker 1: You know, when I came up, it was lived to
- 54:57Speaker 1: be the American dream. Everybody wanted to lived in Mary
- 55:00Speaker 1: Can dream. You don't hear that anymore? Those things I
- 55:03Speaker 1: wouldn't live the American dream. Well, you know that. I
- 55:07Speaker 1: think that what happens is because of the fact that
- 55:10Speaker 1: you know, everything is so immediate. You know, you know
- 55:13Speaker 1: the apps you have cell phones, you can actually see
- 55:16Speaker 1: people across the world. You know, you can be on
- 55:18Speaker 1: a plane and see somebody on the ground and talk
- 55:20Speaker 1: to them visually and uh and through audio, and then
- 55:24Speaker 1: you can watch your favorite movie while you're while you're
- 55:27Speaker 1: not even at the house anymore. And so you're so
- 55:29Speaker 1: connected that your dreams can sometimes be muddied because they
- 55:34Speaker 1: can be on top of you. That's when you hear
- 55:36Speaker 1: so much about you know, mental health. How did you
- 55:39Speaker 1: get comfort? The name of your company System five Electronics,
- 55:41Speaker 1: Why that name? Uh, My wife helped me with that.
- 55:45Speaker 1: She did the logo. Back then the five services was
- 55:48Speaker 1: you know, we did phone, we did in it comes,
- 55:51Speaker 1: we did central back, we did security, and then we
- 55:54Speaker 1: did cameras. And so now if you asked me that
- 55:57Speaker 1: same question about right, there's so much else we do
- 56:05Speaker 1: because our newer paddles the facial recognition. So we've gone
- 56:08Speaker 1: from a button to a two way voice system that's
- 56:12Speaker 1: a liquor crystal keypad. Two. Now we can walk up
- 56:15Speaker 1: to the keypad that sees your face and you can
- 56:17Speaker 1: dis on the alarm system. So technology just changes. Every
- 56:21Speaker 1: two to three years we see something that's being invented
- 56:24Speaker 1: and brought out, and so it's amazing the technology and
- 56:27Speaker 1: people love gadgets. Like you said, you know, with my business,
- 56:30Speaker 1: you want to get a booked on the smartphone because
- 56:32Speaker 1: everybody carries their smartphone. Every time you pick around, you
- 56:35Speaker 1: see somebody with a smartphone. So if if your system
- 56:39Speaker 1: don't connect them with that smartphone, then you're gonna lose
- 56:42Speaker 1: that consumer. So we make sure that everybody sit is
- 56:46Speaker 1: when they sign up with us, that they have an
- 56:48Speaker 1: app on the phone they can arm and this on
- 56:50Speaker 1: their system. They can receive full notifications where there's low batteries,
- 56:54Speaker 1: AC power phase, or just letting them know when someone
- 56:58Speaker 1: comes in and out of the house. You know, these
- 57:00Speaker 1: are critical things that people want to know all the time.
- 57:04Speaker 1: Uh So it's really really important. Especially a wellness program
- 57:07Speaker 1: now you know it does a behavior study in the
- 57:10Speaker 1: thirty day here it so if you have someone at
- 57:12Speaker 1: all timers or something like that, you can put out
- 57:15Speaker 1: a system and say, hey, I want the wellness. We
- 57:17Speaker 1: turn on a little button and then we introduce the
- 57:19Speaker 1: wellness and it tracks what time you get out of bed,
- 57:22Speaker 1: what time you get into bed, what time you open
- 57:25Speaker 1: up your medicine cabinet, and if you leave about to
- 57:27Speaker 1: do it two o'clock in the morning. It knows that
- 57:29Speaker 1: that's not your behavior. It's gonna take your loved ones
- 57:32Speaker 1: and say, hey, you might want to check on mom
- 57:34Speaker 1: and dad because they're doing something that's not normal. Wow.
- 57:38Speaker 1: You know, it's really interesting just hearing your your energy,
- 57:41Speaker 1: hearing your approach to this. When I look at technology,
- 57:44Speaker 1: you know, and you're absolutely correct. That app because I
- 57:48Speaker 1: can open my ear and my business I can open
- 57:51Speaker 1: them by gate. I can close the gate and keep
- 57:53Speaker 1: it open. I just love that feat you. I can
- 57:55Speaker 1: look at all the ten cameras in my building. I
- 57:57Speaker 1: love that feats you too. And then I can I
- 58:00Speaker 1: can turn my alarm off, turn it off. My employees
- 58:03Speaker 1: arrival that I can turn off the law and they
- 58:05Speaker 1: lead stay late. I can keep it on. But that's
- 58:08Speaker 1: those those gadgets, man, you know, look at me. I'm happy.
- 58:11Speaker 1: I'm happy. So you you're absolutely right. Gadgets or drive
- 58:15Speaker 1: Americans okay, right, control your garage door opener, and all
- 58:20Speaker 1: kinds of other things. You know. But but get back
- 58:23Speaker 1: to the young ladies question. I started thinking of some stuff,
- 58:26Speaker 1: you know, because I'm six or six years old, and
- 58:28Speaker 1: when I came up you know, my mother. I followed
- 58:32Speaker 1: my mother around you know, I was able to see
- 58:34Speaker 1: you know, colored men, colored women, and I need to
- 58:37Speaker 1: ask my mother why can't we go upstairs? So that's
- 58:39Speaker 1: white only, you know, And then that kind of gave
- 58:42Speaker 1: me impression why why? Why? You know, then I really
- 58:45Speaker 1: want to do better because I wanted to show them
- 58:48Speaker 1: I can be just as good as any of the prisons.
- 58:50Speaker 1: So what says, don't teach critical race there in schools.
- 58:54Speaker 1: You know, if they don't want to do it, you
- 58:56Speaker 1: should teach it at home. You should let them see
- 58:59Speaker 1: what the past looked like so they all know what
- 59:01Speaker 1: the future is in front of them. There's so many
- 59:04Speaker 1: people win ahead of them to open up these doors.
- 59:07Speaker 1: The opportunity is there for you. Now you have all
- 59:10Speaker 1: the opportunities in front of you. You need to take
- 59:13Speaker 1: advantage of what Dr King matholm X all these people
- 59:16Speaker 1: struggle to make sure you have a better opportunity. You
- 59:20Speaker 1: need to see that. So a lot of these movies,
- 59:22Speaker 1: they need to take them back and let them see
- 59:24Speaker 1: these movies and take that phone away from them. Don't
- 59:27Speaker 1: let them be hooked on the phone twenty four hours
- 59:29Speaker 1: a day, seven days a week, you know, because if
- 59:31Speaker 1: they don't have a good conversation or they can't communicate
- 59:35Speaker 1: very well, they're gonna have problems in life a communication skills.
- 59:40Speaker 1: So you gotta take that phone out of the kid's
- 59:43Speaker 1: hand when they're coming up as a younger person to
- 59:45Speaker 1: make sure they don't lose out on the communication skills.
- 59:48Speaker 1: We know I want, I wanted to fall off it.
- 59:50Speaker 1: Call about it self education, educating your kid and self education.
- 59:54Speaker 1: Like my degree is in mathematics and our minor is
- 59:56Speaker 1: in sociology. If I had to do it all over again,
- 59:59Speaker 1: I probably would my degree of being sociology, probably gonna
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: get a PhD. Because of the fact that what I
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: learned from a from a from a black history, black
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: cultural I learned so much when I realized that how
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: much information isn't taught in public school. You know, Basically,
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: they talk about slavery, they talk about I always mentioned
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: the cotton gin, they mentioned a couple of things. They
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: don't mention that black participated in World War one, World
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: War two, And then it goes up to the Brown
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: versus board of Education. Then it talks a little bit
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: about Dr Martin Luther King and then then he could
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: Then John F. J F K gets assassinated. Then he
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: gets assassinated. Robert Kenning gets assassinated, and basically kind of
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: like stops. And that education, what you're talking about, is
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: important because of the fact that you cannot let people
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: dictate your knowledge. And that's what I learned in sociology.
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: I would tell you, Mr Brown, I was so moved
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: by about my ignorance of what I had contributed as
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: a race of people and not being denied that information
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: is scary. And that's all you're saying. Knowledge can change
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: a child and an adult's approach to life if you
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: take it in and accept it and also seek it out.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: And that's what you're saying right now, correct, right, Because
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: knowledge is power. Someone's gonna always say that knowledge is power.
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: The Bible said too much is given, much is required,
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: So that means you gotta do something to have something.
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: The spirit is inside of all of us and all
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: we have to do is an act it and then
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: God opens up the windows and make it happen. So
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: if you you know, as a man thinking, so is he.
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: So if you're thinking of something all the time, the
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: Spirit is gonna bring people around you to make that happen.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: You just gotta be open minded to see it happening.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: You know, you gotta be open minded and know that
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: you're blessed you and you you're a child of God
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: on this earth. So when I started my business and
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: people say you were crazy for quitting your job. If
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: you make your sixty dollars a year, and back in
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: those days, that was a lot of money, I said, no,
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: I'm gonna start my own business because I've had enough
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: of white America. I am not going to continue to
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: get these big bonus checks at Chrystmas time. I know
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: how much money he's gotta be making. So I'm gonna
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: start my own business. And I started out of my
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: house just like most people do. You gotta start at
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: the basic, you know. I turned my living room into
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: a conference room. I died in room into a meeting room.
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: I turned one of my bedrooms into an office. I
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: turned my garage into a comp into a warehouse, and
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: I turned the back porch into a training facility for
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: my kids. And I took off from there, and within
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: three years later I started meeting people like Mr. NH.
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: Brother who became a mentor to me. Mr H. J.
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: Russell back. You know, you know, those people really wanted
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: to help as many African Americans as possible. You know
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: there are people out there to want to do that.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: But if you if you bring the clock back to
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: right now and you say, okay, what's going on at
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: the trade jobs because a lot of us they won't
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: teaching in school, and that that's that's a big failure
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: for all our politicians right now. But because if you
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: go to the ib W, why I came out, You're
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: not gonna see that many black electricians. You're gonna see spannings.
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: They're not teaching the blacks the electrical, the plumb and
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: the carpentry because they don't have to do that anymore.
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: They was mandated to teach us that when we came up,
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: so a lot of us, when we learned the trade,
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: you learn how to do job costs, You learn how
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: to do takeoffs. So you you were talked how to
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: run a business in a certain way. You would talk
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: these things. So when you say, okay, I'm gonna talking
