- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Docs, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Welcome to Connecting the Dots. I'm Alex.
- 0:18And I'm Morgan. Good morning. It is Monday, November
- 0:2024th, 2025. And we are definitely in that final
- 0:25stretch before the holidays. We sure are. We
- 0:27have some really big stories today that connect
- 0:30some some pretty surprising dots between finance,
- 0:33geopolitics, and of course, the crypto world.
- 0:36Absolutely. But before we get into all that,
- 0:38let's do a quick check on the day. Right. Starting
- 0:41with the weather. Nationally, there's a big storm
- 0:43system moving into the southern U .S. We're talking
- 0:46eastern Texas all the way to the lower Mississippi
- 0:49Valley. Yeah, that's bringing some severe thunderstorms,
- 0:52heavy rain, and, you know, a real risk of flooding.
- 0:55And up north, it's the opposite story. Heavy
- 0:57snow, really gusty winds hitting the northern
- 1:00Rockies, the Plains, and the upper Midwest. So
- 1:02bundle up if you're up there. Here in Sacramento,
- 1:05a bit closer to home, we've got a dense fog advisory,
- 1:07in effect, until about 11 a .m., so... Be careful
- 1:10on the commute. Okay, let's pivot to the markets.
- 1:12After Friday's close, the picture is... Well,
- 1:15it's a bit mixed. The Dow was down, but just
- 1:17slightly. Yeah, less than a quarter of a percent
- 1:20for the day. The bigger story, I think, is the
- 1:22weekly change. It's a much steeper drop, down
- 1:25almost 1 .8%. And the S &P 500 actually managed
- 1:28a small gain on Friday. It did, but... Just like
- 1:32the Dow, its weekly trend was also in the red.
- 1:35So there's definitely some pressure on the broader
- 1:37market. And then there's Bitcoin. It's continuing
- 1:39a pretty serious flood. Yeah, it closed around
- 1:43eighty five thousand five hundred down over one
- 1:45point four percent on the day. But that weekly
- 1:47drop is what's really eye watering down more
- 1:50than seven percent. Turbulence is definitely
- 1:53the word for the digital asset space right now.
- 1:56It is. And that turbulence is really at the center
- 1:58of what we're looking at today. Before we get
- 2:00to that, though, we want to give a quick shout
- 2:01out to our sponsor, Old Glory. If you're starting
- 2:04your holiday shopping and who isn't, Old Glory
- 2:07is an iconic music and sports fan merch store.
- 2:10They have some genuinely great stuff, especially
- 2:12for those techie friends who can be, let's be
- 2:15honest, impossible to shop for. Exactly. Just
- 2:18head over to their website, oldglory .com. And
- 2:21if you use the promo code SNARFUL, that's S -N
- 2:23-A -R -F -U -L at checkout, you'll get 15 % off
- 2:27your entire purchase. A great deal. OK, let's
- 2:30get into it. All right, let's unpack the Morningstar.
- 2:33We're starting with a story out of European fintech
- 2:35that involves, well, just a massive number. A
- 2:38staggering number, really. Our first story is
- 2:40about Revolut. It has just cemented its place
- 2:44as Europe's most valuable startup. And how valuable
- 2:47are we talking? Its latest share sale pushed
- 2:50its valuation to $75 billion. Wow. $75 billion.
- 2:55And what was it just a year ago? I mean, it was
- 2:56already huge. It was. It was valued at $45 billion
- 2:59in 2024. So that's a $30 billion leap in 12 months.
- 3:04So the big question is, is that number justified?
- 3:06Is it real value or is it just market hype? you
- 3:09know, fear of missing out. It's a fair question,
- 3:12but the financials here seem to back it up pretty
- 3:14solidly. This isn't just hype. For 2024, their
- 3:17revenue surged 72%. To four billion dollars.
- 3:20Four billion. And this is the crucial part. Their
- 3:24profit before tax grew by 149 % to 1 .4 billion.
- 3:28When you're posting profits that are accelerating
- 3:31that fast, investors pay attention. And it's
- 3:34who is investing that really tells the story,
- 3:36right? It's not just the usual private equity
- 3:38firms. Exactly. You've got the big names like
- 3:41COATU and Fidelity, of course. Yeah. But you
- 3:43also have Inventors, which is Nvidia's venture
- 3:46capital arm. Right. And Andreessen Horowitz,
- 3:49A16s, their involvement signals something much
- 3:52bigger is happening here. It points directly
- 3:54to a deep collaboration on artificial intelligence.
- 3:58It does. This isn't just about being a better
- 4:00digital bank anymore. This is about using cutting
- 4:02edge AI to build the actual architecture for
- 4:05the future of finance. So we're talking about
- 4:07things like hyper -efficient fraud detection,
- 4:09really personalized financial products for customers.
- 4:12All of that. Things that lower costs and bring
- 4:14in customers faster. And it all feeds into their
- 4:17main goal, which is huge. They want to build
- 4:19the first truly global bank. The goal is 100
- 4:23million customers in 100 countries. And they're
- 4:25already moving on it with launches in Mexico,
- 4:28Colombia, and soon in India. And one last thing
- 4:32on this, which I think is a nice touch, they've
- 4:34done five employee share sales. So the people
- 4:38actually building this $75 billion company are
- 4:41getting a piece of the pie. Which is how it should
- 4:43be. Okay, from a story of runaway success, let's
- 4:48pivot to something a lot more complicated. A
- 4:52real geopolitical contradiction, actually. Let's
- 4:55talk about the surprising return of Bitcoin mining
- 4:58in China. This one is fascinating because China
- 5:01issued a hard formal ban on all crypto mining
- 5:04back in 2021. They were done with it. They were
- 5:06supposedly done. Yeah. But new data shows they
- 5:08have quietly bounced back to become the world's
- 5:11third largest Bitcoin mining hub. Third largest,
- 5:14holding an estimated 14 percent of the global
- 5:16hash rate. And just a quick reminder, the hash
- 5:19rate is basically the total computing power of
- 5:21the Bitcoin network. It's a measure of both security
- 5:23and energy use. So 14 percent is a huge piece
- 5:26of that pie. It is, especially when you consider
- 5:28who the top two are. The U .S. is number one
- 5:31at around 38 percent and Russia is second at
- 5:34about 15 and a half. So you add it all up and
- 5:37those three nations. the US, Russia, and China,
- 5:40they now control over two -thirds of the entire
- 5:43global hashrate. 67%. That feels very concentrated.
- 5:48It's incredibly concentrated. And the reason
- 5:50for China's comeback is, well, it's simple economics.
- 5:54Cheap electricity. Just cheap surplus electricity
- 5:57in these energy -rich provinces, places like
- 6:00Xinjiang and Sichuan. They have more power than
- 6:02they can use or transmit, so the local incentive
- 6:05is just to sell it to someone. Anyone. Even if
- 6:08that someone is a supposedly banned Bitcoin miner.
- 6:11Exactly. It shows that local economic forces
- 6:14can sometimes just steamroll a central government's
- 6:16policy, at least when it comes to a decentralized
- 6:19network. And there's hard data to back this up,
- 6:21right? It's not just speculation. Oh, yeah. A
- 6:23major mining rig producer, Canaan, reported that
- 6:26over 30 % of its global revenue in 2024 came
- 6:29from China. Wow. And what was that figure right
- 6:31after the ban? It was less than 3%. So the miners
- 6:34are back and they're buying new hardware. And
- 6:37at the same time, we're seeing some, well, some
- 6:40small signs that the official policy might be
- 6:43softening, or at least evolving. Right. Hong
- 6:45Kong has a stablecoin bill coming into effect,
- 6:47and there are reports that Beijing is looking
- 6:50at yuan -backed stablecoins. So it's a complicated
- 6:53picture. And all this is happening while the
- 6:55market is in turmoil. Bitcoin's price is way
- 6:57down from its October peak. Which means minor
- 7:00revenue, there's a metric for it called the hash
- 7:02price, has hit an all -time low. So even with
- 7:06that cheap electricity, it's a tough environment
- 7:08for them. And that tough environment, that volatility
- 7:11leads us directly into our third story. It really
- 7:14does. This is where the market crash slams right
- 7:17into the world of politics and personal fortunes.
- 7:20We're talking about the crypto market volatility
- 7:21and its impact on the Trump family's assets and
- 7:24how that connects to a very high profile presidential
- 7:28pardon. Right. The crypto market shed over a
- 7:31trillion dollars recently. That's a massive crash.
- 7:33And it directly hit the Trump family's estimated
- 7:36fortune. It fell from a peak of about $7 .7 billion
- 7:40in September. All the way down to $6 .7 billion
- 7:44in November, a billion dollar drop. Mostly from
- 7:46their digital asset holdings. President Trump's
- 7:49stake in TMTG, his media company, dropped by
- 7:52about $800 million. A Trump -branded meme coin
- 7:56also lost about a quarter of its value. And a
- 7:59Bitcoin mining venture connected to Eric Trump.
- 8:01It shed about half of its peak value. The market
- 8:04was just brutal. So in the middle of all this
- 8:07financial turmoil, President Trump issues a pardon
- 8:09for Chengpeng Zhao, the founder of Binance, better
- 8:12known as CZ. That's right. CZ had pleaded guilty
- 8:16to failing to maintain an effective anti -money
- 8:18laundering program. He'd already served nearly
- 8:20four months in prison. And the pardon just whites
- 8:22that slate clean. The White House defended it,
- 8:25saying it was correcting an overly prosecuted
- 8:27case and ending what they called the Biden administration's
- 8:30war on crypto. Now, here's where the story gets
- 8:33really interesting. This is where we connect
- 8:35the dots. There's a perceived overlap, a financial
- 8:39connection between Binance, the company whose
- 8:42founder was just pardoned, and the Trump family's
- 8:45own crypto business ventures. Yes. Binance is
- 8:48reported to be a key supporter of a venture called
- 8:51World Liberty Financial, which is tied to the
- 8:54Trump family. And lobbying records show that
- 8:56Binance hired a lobbyist who was a friend of
- 8:59Donald Trump Jr. And what was that lobbyist working
- 9:01on? Befiling specifically mentioned lobbying
- 9:04the White House on executive relief. Which is
- 9:06basically a synonym for a pardon. It is. So you
- 9:09can see why this has drawn intense criticism
- 9:11from Democratic senators who are pointing to
- 9:13a potential conflict of interest given the clear
- 9:15financial ties. So what you have is this perfect
- 9:18storm. Market volatility causing huge personal
- 9:22financial losses for a political family. with
- 9:24a presidential action that benefits a major player
- 9:27in the crypto space, a player who also happens
- 9:30to be financially linked to that same family.
- 9:32It just raises so many questions about the politicization
- 9:34of finance and regulation in this new digital
- 9:38era. A really complex way to start the week.
- 9:41It certainly is. Before we wrap up and give you
- 9:43our final thought, we want to thank another one
- 9:45of our great sponsors. If you're more into hitting
- 9:48the links than tracking the markets, you should
- 9:50know about Scony. Scony is a premium golf shoe
- 9:55store, and their stuff is fantastic. It really
- 9:57is. And just like with Old Glory, if you head
- 10:00over to their website, scony .com, and use our
- 10:03promo code SNARFL, you'll get 15 % off your entire
- 10:07purchase. Perfect for a holiday gift for the
- 10:09golfer in your life. OK, so let's do a quick
- 10:12recap. All right. First, we had Revolut's incredible
- 10:16$75 billion valuation, which seems to be driven
- 10:19by real profits and a serious commitment to using
- 10:22AI. Then we looked at the big contradiction in
- 10:25China, where Bitcoin mining is making a huge
- 10:27comeback despite an official ban, all thanks
- 10:30to cheap local power. And finally, we saw how
- 10:33the brutal crypto market crash is directly intersecting
- 10:36with politics, with the Trump family's financial
- 10:38losses and the controversial pardon of Binance's
- 10:40founder, CZ. Looking at all three of these stories
- 10:43together. There's a really clear theme that emerges
- 10:46and it's this concentration of control Yeah,
- 10:49you see it everywhere you have three nations
- 10:50controlling two -thirds of the global mining
- 10:52power or you have a single political act pardon
- 10:56that could reshape the future for a massive crypto
- 11:00entity with clear ties to power and That leaves
- 11:04you our listener with a really important question
- 11:06to think about this week If governments and powerful
- 11:09individuals can still exert so much control over
- 11:12the infrastructure, the wealth, and the rules
- 11:14of the game in the digital asset space, what
- 11:17does that concentration of power really mean
- 11:19for the original promise of decentralization
- 11:22in the future of finance and technology? Something
- 11:25to chew on as the week gets going. The real points
- 11:28of control aren't always where you expect them
- 11:30to be. We're here to help it snarfle, so reach
