- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Welcome to Connecting the Dots. I'm Alex.
- 0:18And I'm Morgan. It's Friday, December 26th, 2025.
- 0:22And, well, we're here to break down some pretty
- 0:24dense, but really consequential. news from the
- 0:27past week. That's right. And we're going to give
- 0:29you the technical breakdown you need, but also
- 0:31connect it all back to, you know, what it actually
- 0:33means for you. Let's start with a quick look
- 0:35outside our world of tech and finance. If you're
- 0:37traveling after the holiday, you'll want to pay
- 0:38attention. Yeah, that atmospheric river that
- 0:41hit us here in California with all that heavy
- 0:43rain and mountain snow that's finally winding
- 0:46down. Thank goodness it is. But that whole system
- 0:49is kind of slid east. So now we're seeing the
- 0:52Great Lakes, the northern mid -Atlantic, even
- 0:54southern New England. they're dealing with a
- 0:56wintry mix we're talking freezing rain sleet
- 0:59snow all the fun stuff exactly and it's gonna
- 1:02be happening today through saturday morning so
- 1:04it's pretty hazardous out there right the real
- 1:07danger with that kind of mix isn't just the slick
- 1:09roads it's the ice building up on trees on power
- 1:12lines big potential for power outages there so
- 1:15if you're out and about please just be careful
- 1:17okay Let's pivot to the markets. It was a little
- 1:20bit of a sleepy day, which is pretty typical
- 1:22for the day after Christmas. Yeah, volume was
- 1:24soft, but the key thing to look at is the momentum
- 1:27for the whole week. That's still looking pretty
- 1:30strong. It did feel a little soft at the close.
- 1:33The Dow was down just a tiny bit, what, 0 .15
- 1:36%? Mm -hmm, and S &P 500 was right there with
- 1:39it, down about 0 .12%. But like you said, you
- 1:42zoom out to the whole week since Monday, and
- 1:44both are still up. They're holding onto gains
- 1:46of around 0. 9%. So a pretty good week for investors
- 1:49overall. Post -holiday softness is totally normal.
- 1:53The one exception, as usual, seems to be Bitcoin.
- 1:56It's a... Still on its own path. It really is.
- 1:59Down about a quarter of a percent for the day,
- 2:01but if you look at the week, it's down a bit
- 2:03more. About 1 .69 % since Monday. Just hovering
- 2:06right under that $87 ,000 mark. Context is everything.
- 2:09It is. Now before we get into our main stories
- 2:12from the Snarf will tech article report, what
- 2:14we call the Morningstar, we want to talk about
- 2:16a great place to maybe use some of those gift
- 2:18cards you got yesterday. We are talking about
- 2:20old glory. They are just an iconic spot for music
- 2:24and sports fan merchandise. Seriously, if you've
- 2:27got that techie friend who is also, you know,
- 2:29secretly a huge classic rock fan or loves some
- 2:32obscure sports team, Old Glory is your place.
- 2:35It is fantastic stuff for the holidays or really
- 2:38any time. And we've got a great deal for you.
- 2:40You can get 15 % off your entire purchase by
- 2:42using the promo code SNARFL at checkout. Just
- 2:45head over to oldglory .com. That's promo code
- 2:48S -N -A -R -F -U -L for 15%. sent off. Okay let's
- 2:53unpack our first story and I think this is arguably
- 2:56the most complex and probably most important
- 2:59piece of tech news we've seen all year. It really
- 3:02points to where AI is going. It involves Nvidia,
- 3:04who we all know is the king of AI chips, and
- 3:06a smaller but incredibly fast startup called
- 3:08Groke. The first reports that came out were wild.
- 3:11The headlines were all saying Nvidia was buying
- 3:13Groke for 20 billion dollars all cash. Yeah,
- 3:16and that sent shockwaves everywhere because GROKE
- 3:18had just been valued at under $7 billion. It
- 3:20was this absurd premium. It looked like a total
- 3:22buyout. It seemed like a really aggressive, almost
- 3:25hostile move to just swallow a competitor whole.
- 3:28But the reality is a lot more nuanced and maybe
- 3:32even more brilliant. It really is. What's been
- 3:34confirmed is that it's a strategic, non -exclusive
- 3:38technology licensing agreement. It's focused
- 3:40entirely on what's called inference. So Grok
- 3:43is staying independent. Exactly. There's still
- 3:45their own company, new CEO. They're even keeping
- 3:47their Grok cloud services running. OK, hold on.
- 3:50If it's non -exclusive, that means Grok could,
- 3:53in theory, turn around and license the same tech
- 3:57to NVIDIA's rivals like AMD. So why on earth
- 4:00would NVIDIA pay $20 billion for that? And that
- 4:03is the billion dollar question, isn't it? This
- 4:06is where we have to connect the dots because
- 4:07NVIDIA didn't just buy a license. They bought
- 4:10the brains. The people. The people. This is a
- 4:12massive talent acquisition. The deal brings over
- 4:15Groke's founder, Jonathan Ross, who's a legend.
- 4:17He's a former Google TPU engineer. Plus their
- 4:20president, Sunny Madra, and other key team members.
- 4:23They're all moving to NVIDIA. Ah, so they're
- 4:25paying to make sure those brilliant minds are
- 4:28integrating this tech for NVIDIA and not for
- 4:31anyone else. That protects the investment. Precisely.
- 4:34But to really get why this is so genius, you
- 4:37have to understand the tech itself. You have
- 4:39to understand the difference between AI training
- 4:41and AI inference. Right. So for those of us who
- 4:45aren't semiconductor engineers, break that down
- 4:48for us. Why has this become such a critical point
- 4:52for NVIDIA? OK, think of it like this. AI training
- 4:55is like a student going through medical school.
- 4:57It takes years. Massive amounts of data. It's
- 5:00incredibly intense. NVIDIA's GPUs, their H100s,
- 5:03they are the absolute champions of that. They're
- 5:06built for that heavy lifting. Got it. The study
- 5:08phase. Right. But AI inference? That's when the
- 5:11doctor has graduated and is actually practicing
- 5:13medicine. They have to respond instantly to a
- 5:15patient's question. That's the AI in action.
- 5:17When you ask a chatbot a question or use a co
- 5:19-pilot. And the speed of that response is everything.
- 5:22We all hate lag. Right. That's the bottleneck.
- 5:24Okay, so where does NVIDIA's classic hardware
- 5:27fall short there? Well, their GPUs rely on external
- 5:30memory, which is fantastic for moving huge chunks
- 5:33of data during training. But for those rapid
- 5:36-fire inference tasks, it creates tiny but noticeable
- 5:40delays. Latency. And Grok solved that. Grok came
- 5:43at it from a totally different angle. They built
- 5:45these specialized chips they call LPUs or language
- 5:48processing units. And the big innovation is that
- 5:51they use a ton of on -chip SRAM memory. In simple
- 5:53terms. It's like fifth. NVIDIA's method is having
- 5:56to run across the street to the library every
- 5:58time you use some information. Grok's SRAM is
- 6:01like having every tool you need sitting right
- 6:02there on your desk. So it's faster, way faster.
- 6:05It's almost instantaneous. It offers ultra -fast,
- 6:08predictable inference. And that's the new battleground.
- 6:12The race to train models is maturing. Now it's
- 6:14all about making them usable and instant for
- 6:16millions of people. So this deal is basically
- 6:19Nvidia buying an insurance policy for its future.
- 6:21They're integrating this LPU and SRAM advantage
- 6:24right into their own ecosystem. Exactly. They're
- 6:27neutralizing the threat from other specialized
- 6:29chipmakers before it can even start. It's a classic
- 6:32strategic move. pay a huge price now to own the
- 6:36architecture of the future. And the market seems
- 6:38to agree. NVDA stocks saw a nice little bump
- 6:41on the news. Investors can see the long term
- 6:43play here. It's really a fascinating move. It
- 6:45is. OK, from a deep dive on hardware strategy,
- 6:49let's do a complete 180 and look at a very different
- 6:52but just as significant story that happened over
- 6:56the holiday. We're heading across the Atlantic
- 6:58to the UK, where Jimmy Kimmel delivered Channel
- 7:004's annual alternative Christmas message. And
- 7:04this is a pretty big tradition over there, right?
- 7:06It runs at the same time as the monarch's official
- 7:09Christmas address. It is. And it's always a platform
- 7:11for some, let's say, thought -provoking commentary.
- 7:15And Kimmel definitely used it for that. He didn't
- 7:17pull any punches, did he? The commentary was
- 7:19very focused on U .S. politics. Not at all. He
- 7:22isn't really striking quotes. He said things
- 7:23like, tyranny is booming over here. And from
- 7:27a fascism perspective, this has been a really
- 7:29great year. He also took a direct shot at President
- 7:32Trump. calling him King Donny VIII. Yeah. And
- 7:36to really get the full weight of this, you have
- 7:37to remember the context of what happened to Kimmel's
- 7:40own show back in September. Right. He was suspended
- 7:43by ABC Disney. Indefinitely at first. It was
- 7:47after he made some comments about the killing
- 7:49of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The fallout
- 7:52from that turned into this huge national debate
- 7:55about free speech and the press. And President
- 7:58Trump weighed in pretty heavily on that, celebrating
- 8:00the suspension. He did, which just poured gasoline
- 8:03on the whole fire. So Kimmel used this international
- 8:07stage to reflect on that whole episode. So what
- 8:09was the main point he was trying to make to the
- 8:11UK audience? He called his return to the air,
- 8:14which happened pretty quickly, a Christmas miracle
- 8:16in September. But he said the real story wasn't
- 8:18about him, it was about the public's reaction.
- 8:21What did he say about that? He said millions
- 8:23of people, even people who can't stand him or
- 8:25his politics, all stepped up to defend the principle
- 8:29of free expression. His quote was pretty blunt.
- 8:32Let's hear it. He said, we won, the president
- 8:35lost, and now I'm back on the air every night
- 8:37giving the most powerful politician on earth
- 8:39a right and richly deserved bollocking. He definitely
- 8:43embraced the local slang there. He did. But beyond
- 8:46that personal victory, he had a bigger warning
- 8:49for the UK. He was basically using the US as
- 8:52a cautionary tale. Saying that what's happening
- 8:55here isn't unique. Right. He said that silencing
- 8:57critics isn't something that only happens in
- 8:59places like Russia or North Korea. He claimed
- 9:02the US was, in his words, literally and figuratively
- 9:06tearing down the structures of our democracy.
- 9:09Wow. That is a very stark message to send from
- 9:12that kind of platform. It is. And he mentioned
- 9:14things like the free press, judicial independence,
- 9:17and even referenced the partial demolition of
- 9:19the White House East Wing as examples. What's
- 9:21really interesting here is how this connects
- 9:23a very personal American political feud to this
- 9:27huge global conversation about the health of
- 9:30democracy and the role of the free press. And
- 9:32that's the key takeaway for you listening at
- 9:34home. It shows how these high profile platforms
- 9:37are constantly being tested and how these battles
- 9:39are influencing perceptions all over the world
- 9:42far beyond just the U .S. Absolutely. Okay. Incredible
- 9:46analysis on two very different but equally important
- 9:50stories. Before we recap, we want to thank another
- 9:53partner that makes this show possible. We want
- 9:55to give a shout out to Skoni. If you're a golfer
- 9:57looking to upgrade your gear in the new year,
- 10:00Skoni is the place to go. That's S -K -O -N -I,
- 10:03pronounced Skoni. They are the premium golf shoe
- 10:06store. Just fantastic footwear designed for real
- 10:08comfort and performance on the course. And you
- 10:10can get 15 % off your entire purchase when you
- 10:13use the promo code SNARFL at checkout. A great
- 10:16way to start the 2026 season. Just head over
- 10:18to scony .com and use the code SNARFL for 15
- 10:22% off. Right, so let's do a quick recap of what
- 10:24we've unpacked today. First, that Nvidia and
- 10:26Grok deal. The headline was about an acquisition,
- 10:29but the real story is about the future of AI.
- 10:31It's all about low latency inference. Right.
- 10:34Nvidia spent a fortune, not just for a license,
- 10:37but for the talent. The key architects who can
- 10:39build that speed into their ecosystem and protect
- 10:42them from rivals. It's a long -term power play.
- 10:44And second, Jimmy Kemmel's alternative Christmas
- 10:47message in the UK. He used that international
- 10:50platform to frame his suspension not as a personal
- 10:53fight, but as a victory for free expression.
- 10:56And as a stark warning to other democracies about
- 10:59what he sees as the erosion of those institutions
- 11:01in the US, it really globalized a domestic political
- 11:04fight. It just shows that the battle for dominance,
- 11:07whether it's in AI chips or in public opinion,
- 11:10is never really over. Every move is a calculated
- 11:13play for future influence. Which leads us to
- 11:15a final thought for you to chew on today. If
- 11:18the biggest value in tech is shifting from just
- 11:20inventing something new to acquiring the people
- 11:23who know how to scale that invention, does that
- 11:25mean the next generation of tech billionaires
- 11:27won't come from a startup IPO? But instead from
- 11:29these huge strategic talent and technology acquisitions,
- 11:34something to think about as we head into the
- 11:35weekend. We're here to help at Snarful, so reach
- 11:37out on our website if you have any more questions.
- 11:43That's a wrap on today's top stories. Remember,
