- 0:04Speaker 1: Welcome to Money Making Conversations. It's the show that she
- 0:07Speaker 1: has the secrets of success experience firsthand by marketing and
- 0:10Speaker 1: Brandon expert Rashan McDonald. I will know he's giving me
- 0:13Speaker 1: advice to many occasions. In the case you didn't notice,
- 0:15Speaker 1: I'm not broke, you know, he'll be interviewing celebrity CEOs,
- 0:19Speaker 1: entrepreneurs and industry decision makers. It's what he likes to do.
- 0:22Speaker 1: It's what he likes to share. Now it's time to
- 0:25Speaker 1: hear from my man, Rashan McDonald money Making Conversations. Here
- 0:29Speaker 1: we come, groom. Everybody money Making Conversation is participating in
- 0:32Speaker 1: Devoorhees College Stream of Thon. The goal for the Stream
- 0:36Speaker 1: of Thon is to raise one million dollars for the college.
- 0:38Speaker 1: During these unusual pandemic times, we try to get the
- 0:41Speaker 1: word out nationally. That's why the show is airing today.
- 0:44Speaker 1: We will let people know about our event, my show
- 0:46Speaker 1: Money Making Conversation, which airs every Sunday from four pm
- 0:49Speaker 1: to six pm on w s v C, D six
- 0:52Speaker 1: point five FM and seven nine AM. We are the
- 0:55Speaker 1: hype machine and we're letting everybody know because this summer
- 0:58Speaker 1: first is today that actually for he streamer thought is
- 1:01Speaker 1: taking place Tuesday did summerfir. I got another familiar face.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Guess who's been on my show money Making Conversation. He's
- 1:07Speaker 1: a graduate hbc U man Marhalls graduate, but carry sellers.
- 1:11Speaker 1: He recently stayed and I watched this on CNN the
- 1:14Speaker 1: Situation Room, and it maybe laugh. The Joe Biden presidency
- 1:18Speaker 1: is not built for Snapchat, is not built for Twitter.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Is built to govern. This is my man, he states
- 1:25Speaker 1: it because he's been doing it for a long time.
- 1:26Speaker 1: He made history in two thousand and six when, at
- 1:28Speaker 1: the age of twenty two years old, he defeated a
- 1:31Speaker 1: twenty six year in combat state representative. They become the
- 1:33Speaker 1: youngest member of the South Carolina State legislator and the
- 1:36Speaker 1: youngest African American elect official in the nation. He's a man.
- 1:40Speaker 1: He's specially the roots are most influential and most influential
- 1:43Speaker 1: African American mayor. He practices law with the Strong Law
- 1:46Speaker 1: Firm and Columbia South Carolina. And it's a political commentator.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Like I stayed earlier, I saw him on the Situation Room.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Please welcome back to my main conversation, my man, but
- 1:55Speaker 1: carry sellers. Howry it to my brother. Thank you for
- 2:01Speaker 1: tuning in, and thank you for all you're doing, and
- 2:02Speaker 1: thank you for letting me join you as we have
- 2:04Speaker 1: lived for He's called it's awesome. You know. To make
- 2:07Speaker 1: that statement is not built for Snapchat, is not built
- 2:10Speaker 1: for Twitter, is built to govern what motivates you make
- 2:14Speaker 1: that statement there, Bari, Well, you know, I was thinking
- 2:17Speaker 1: about how many times the President elect or President of
- 2:20Speaker 1: the United States, whichever term of art you want to
- 2:23Speaker 1: use to describe him, um get some criticism for uh,
- 2:28Speaker 1: you know, trying to bring people together, and he gets
- 2:30Speaker 1: some criticism for his diligence and um uh and his discipline.
- 2:35Speaker 1: But we recognize now that that discipline, that diligence, it
- 2:39Speaker 1: pays off. And so while on Twitter and Snapchat and
- 2:42Speaker 1: social media, everybody and the mamma want to tell him
- 2:44Speaker 1: what he should be doing. His strategy has worked thus far,
- 2:47Speaker 1: and so sometimes you just have to have faith. And
- 2:49Speaker 1: faith is uh. I'll tell you when he when um
- 2:53Speaker 1: Biden one. My faith has been tested based on what
- 3:00Speaker 1: um President Donald Trump has been doing. When you look
- 3:04Speaker 1: back on this, and it's not over because the man
- 3:06Speaker 1: has over eighty million social media follows, over seventy two
- 3:09Speaker 1: million people voted for him, So he's not going away.
- 3:11Speaker 1: If anybody thinks he's just gonna drift away, they're crazy.
- 3:14Speaker 1: So what do you think about the legacy of Donald
- 3:17Speaker 1: Trump from your perspective, from your viewpoints, not counting this year.
- 3:22Speaker 1: I think it's still still yet to be written. I
- 3:25Speaker 1: think that history will not look kindly upon him. Um.
- 3:31Speaker 1: The most amazing part about how history treats you, and
- 3:33Speaker 1: you don't get a chance to write it yourself. M
- 3:36Speaker 1: you know, it's others who will be able to you.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Don't write your own obituary. Um. You know you know
- 3:42Speaker 1: in the script how and not in the scripture, but
- 3:44Speaker 1: in the church they say, made the work I've done
- 3:46Speaker 1: speak for me, right, Um, So the work he's done
- 3:49Speaker 1: I will speak for him. And I think that the
- 3:52Speaker 1: everlasting stain of bigger treings in a phobian racism is
- 3:55Speaker 1: going to be hard to escape. Um. But I don't
- 3:58Speaker 1: think it's as you said, he ain't going nowhere. Trump is, um,
- 4:01Speaker 1: is going to hover over American politics, in particularly the
- 4:03Speaker 1: Republican Party for a long time, and so we'll have
- 4:06Speaker 1: more time to be able to flesh out what that
- 4:07Speaker 1: really means. And it's really crazy because of the fact
- 4:10Speaker 1: that he um, I don't think he cares about anybody.
- 4:13Speaker 1: That's my just my personal opinion. Not that's not trying
- 4:15Speaker 1: to get you to share that cares about himself. Yes,
- 4:18Speaker 1: he cares about himself and that's really that's really what
- 4:20Speaker 1: motivates him to the point of being able to be
- 4:23Speaker 1: as divisive as he is now. Denmark is the location
- 4:26Speaker 1: of Vorhees, where we hold steing the Voorhies stream of
- 4:29Speaker 1: on where we're trying to raise a million dollars. The
- 4:31Speaker 1: event is December first. Tell us your relationship with the
- 4:34Speaker 1: vorhes College and and in this presence in the Denmark community.
- 4:40Speaker 1: So you know, I'm I'm from Denmo. I know, I know,
- 4:44Speaker 1: I read the book. Remember I read the book about
- 4:46Speaker 1: your dad three miles away from what he's college. I
- 4:50Speaker 1: used to break it into uh the gymnasium over there
- 4:55Speaker 1: bore East College. I used to go swimming during the
- 4:57Speaker 1: summer and in the in the swimming pool live or
- 4:59Speaker 1: East College. My dad Ad was president of where East College.
- 5:01Speaker 1: I went to church at St. Philip's Episcopal But during
- 5:04Speaker 1: this time of covid um, you know, this is a
- 5:08Speaker 1: moment that's even more important than previous moments because when
- 5:11Speaker 1: p w I s and white institutions catch the cold
- 5:14Speaker 1: like they have now, black institutions catch the flu. And
- 5:18Speaker 1: so what we're seeing right now are these institutions where
- 5:22Speaker 1: they're not able to have UM students on campus. I
- 5:25Speaker 1: really need these dollars and resources. And so, you know,
- 5:28Speaker 1: like King said, not just I have a dream speech,
- 5:31Speaker 1: but that fierce urgency of now this is a really
- 5:33Speaker 1: really important moment for this institution UH to make sure
- 5:37Speaker 1: that it not just survives, but thrives going into beyond. Well, um,
- 5:44Speaker 1: Vice President elect, it's an HBCU grad Howard University. Do
- 5:48Speaker 1: you think that's that's important for the HBCU brand. An
- 5:52Speaker 1: HBCU I'm now to have someone in that power position
- 5:55Speaker 1: because hbc has always struggled to find their vorce financially.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Or you know, Donald Trump when you signed the the
- 6:02Speaker 1: law the budget in September of twenty eighteen, said he
- 6:06Speaker 1: did more for HP schools C schools than anybody had
- 6:09Speaker 1: done in history. What can Kamala Harris do? Vice President,
- 6:13Speaker 1: Let Kamala Harris do for HBCU schools moving forward? One
- 6:19Speaker 1: big example, I mean, you know, making sure that. Yeah,
- 6:26Speaker 1: there is no question about the vibe the HBCU experience.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Always look at Kamala Harris and see that as a
- 6:33Speaker 1: Howard rad she's now in the room. She is um
- 6:37Speaker 1: uh one step away from being for one breath away
- 6:39Speaker 1: from being president of the United States. So that that's first.
- 6:43Speaker 1: The second thing is it's always about that shared experience
- 6:45Speaker 1: because she's lived that experience, she knows how to bring
- 6:48Speaker 1: that to the table. And you know this better than most.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Anytime you have a bad black woman at the table,
- 6:53Speaker 1: which are you stronger for? And so I think that
- 6:56Speaker 1: we're going to be stronger for having her there. And
- 6:59Speaker 1: it's really when you look at the whole situation. Now,
- 7:01Speaker 1: you know you were born and raised in South Carolina,
- 7:04Speaker 1: but you went to school in Atlanta, Georgia, Georgia in particular.
- 7:08Speaker 1: So now we have a very uh interesting Senate racist
- 7:11Speaker 1: going down between the Democrats and Republicans. With two seats
- 7:14Speaker 1: can be creative imbalance or balance in the Senate. And
- 7:18Speaker 1: then also but I want to go back and when
- 7:20Speaker 1: when Joe Biden was scuffling, when he was he got
- 7:24Speaker 1: we were bad in the battle. Then he came to
- 7:26Speaker 1: the came to South Carolina and she called he calls
- 7:30Speaker 1: him his friend who came to his rescue. Let's talk
- 7:33Speaker 1: about how important that was. And will his friend James
- 7:38Speaker 1: Clapper and play a role into the upcoming administration of
- 7:41Speaker 1: Joe Biden. Well, I don't think. I don't think Jim's
- 7:45Speaker 1: going to d C. Jim is eighty years old. He
- 7:47Speaker 1: ain't trying to go up. Theren't work that hard. Uh,
- 7:57Speaker 1: you know, I have to losing came a second into DADA,
- 7:59Speaker 1: but losing IW in Hampshire that it became that much
- 8:01Speaker 1: more important. And he was gonna win South Carolina. Like,
- 8:04Speaker 1: let's not get it twisted. Like my mom and daddy
- 8:07Speaker 1: and all of them, we're gonna vote for Joe Biden.
- 8:09Speaker 1: They had the relationship with him, He still had the
- 8:11Speaker 1: Obama halo from working with them eight years. But because
- 8:14Speaker 1: Jim came out in a forceful way that he did, um,
- 8:19Speaker 1: it became resounding. And I think at the resigned Africa
- 8:27Speaker 1: catapulted him through Super two on and and this is
- 8:31Speaker 1: a part of the media's fault. I'm like, you can't
- 8:32Speaker 1: dictate who's gonna be the winner of the primary until
- 8:35Speaker 1: you u until you actually have black people to vote
- 8:37Speaker 1: because ain't no black people voting? I went, ain't no voting, uh, Hampshire.
- 8:40Speaker 1: But as soon as black people did vote, then you
- 8:43Speaker 1: saw what happened. Now when you when you looked at that,
- 8:46Speaker 1: we're speaking of voting. You know, we see there's another
- 8:48Speaker 1: recount going on in Georgia. Now this is a machine count.
- 8:52Speaker 1: They did the hand count. Now as a machine count,
- 8:55Speaker 1: we saw one person abstained from voting when it became
- 8:58Speaker 1: to the certified and the voting, she can from it.
- 9:01Speaker 1: We always hear the word democracy. What damaged? Are has
- 9:06Speaker 1: President Trump conjured up? Or the possibilities? Is that? What
- 9:10Speaker 1: has he done to the system that we all took
- 9:12Speaker 1: for granted that we saw that it can be altered
- 9:16Speaker 1: by all manipulated. I mean, I think we have to
- 9:21Speaker 1: review that because we're focusing on human beings. We're focusing
- 9:24Speaker 1: on like in Michigan, we were focusing on Republicans having
- 9:27Speaker 1: a good heart, and one did. But I mean, is
- 9:29Speaker 1: that do you always want that to be the case? Um?
- 9:33Speaker 1: You know, so you know these are norms and we
- 9:37Speaker 1: need to make sure that we crystallize these norms and
- 9:39Speaker 1: put him in the law. If not, then our democracy
- 9:43Speaker 1: is right to to be overtaken, but it held up,
- 9:47Speaker 1: and it held up with Donald Trump. I don't think
- 9:49Speaker 1: we're gonna have anybody nearly as as Bull and China
- 9:51Speaker 1: Shop as Donald Trump. But it held up through his presidency.
- 9:54Speaker 1: So democracy wins and lives another day. Wow issue did
- 9:57Speaker 1: I'm talking to but Cary Sellers. We are talking about
- 10:01Speaker 1: the goal of the Stream of Thon to raise one
- 10:02Speaker 1: million dollars for the college during these unusual pandemic times.
- 10:06Speaker 1: You know this is Foh's dream December one. That's Tuesday,
- 10:10Speaker 1: December one, when when it will be the actual stream
- 10:13Speaker 1: of Thon. Today is our hype show, getting the word out,
- 10:15Speaker 1: letting everybody know Today and Sunday, but the Tuesday, we
- 10:18Speaker 1: need your money on Tuesday for the stream of thing.
- 10:20Speaker 1: It's called it before He's stream of thought. If you
- 10:22Speaker 1: don't know anything about the college is based in Denmark,
- 10:25Speaker 1: South Carolina. Is an incredible school. It is a member
- 10:27Speaker 1: of the HBCU family and we're trying to get the
- 10:31Speaker 1: word out. Get you've see on this show. You'll be
- 10:34Speaker 1: repaiding this on this show. You see Don Lewis is
- 10:36Speaker 1: on this show and right now my man the car
- 10:39Speaker 1: Sellers is on this show. But card has been an
- 10:41Speaker 1: interesting year for me, an interesting year for you. We
- 10:43Speaker 1: went through the pandemic and went through civil unrest, And
- 10:46Speaker 1: let's talk about the pandemic and how it impacted you
- 10:48Speaker 1: and still impacted us all, especially African Americans before I
- 10:51Speaker 1: get to the civil unrest. Yeah. No, And I'll be
- 10:57Speaker 1: at the stream of than On today. I'll actually be
- 10:59Speaker 1: in Denmark for thirty minutes or so, so please tune in,
- 11:02Speaker 1: make sure you get if you can. Um. You know
- 11:06Speaker 1: that this pandemic, it ripped it off the inequalities that
- 11:09Speaker 1: that we have in the communities, especially when it comes
- 11:11Speaker 1: to black and brown folks. UM, the lack of that
- 11:13Speaker 1: quality care. Uh, you know, the fact that the black
- 11:17Speaker 1: folk are dying and disproportionately high rates UM compared to
- 11:21Speaker 1: their white counterparts. The business black businesses are shutting down
- 11:25Speaker 1: and the disproportionate rate compared to their white counterparts. And
- 11:28Speaker 1: so with all those things things said, I just think
- 11:31Speaker 1: that that this is the time that we have to
- 11:33Speaker 1: fight through it together and hopefully get some government assistance
- 11:36Speaker 1: as we're moving through. And hopefully that's one of the
- 11:38Speaker 1: first things that the Biden and Harris administration does. Well,
- 11:43Speaker 1: will it happen, though, what the devisiveness? You know, we
- 11:45Speaker 1: know there's democratic lead in the House. Now we're looking
- 11:49Speaker 1: at these two seats. It could be fifty fifty and
- 11:51Speaker 1: the ties being broken by our Vice president elect Kamala Harris.
- 11:56Speaker 1: It could be and then you have a problem getting
- 12:01Speaker 1: people approved and the Biden, the cabinet, you've got getting
- 12:04Speaker 1: people approved, the potential I don't want to say anybody
- 12:07Speaker 1: could pass away another potential Supreme Court justice. Politics have
- 12:12Speaker 1: become left and right that I was talking to my wife,
- 12:14Speaker 1: I go, when did they become left and right? When
- 12:16Speaker 1: it became the left side, the radical left the right?
- 12:20Speaker 1: When you keep when liberal became a bad is that did? Uh?
- 12:25Speaker 1: Donald Trump just pulled the scab off of something that
- 12:27Speaker 1: was just just simmering there. They make it seem like
- 12:30Speaker 1: the left is a problem. The right is the right?
- 12:32Speaker 1: That really the bothers me the most is that whole
- 12:35Speaker 1: campaign that there's some radical I'm looking at the commercials
- 12:38Speaker 1: down here in Atlanta. They're not even the Republicans aren't
- 12:42Speaker 1: even running commercial about what they're gonna do. They're just
- 12:44Speaker 1: screaming about pelosity, screaming about Shuma. They're screaming about the
- 12:48Speaker 1: radical left. What they're gonna do. They're gonna bring down America.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Where does this come from, Bakari? Well, it's the combination
- 12:56Speaker 1: of Trump combination and social media's a combination of twenty
- 12:58Speaker 1: far our news cycles, and it is a combination awful
- 13:01Speaker 1: people running for all. I always tell people that you've
- 13:04Speaker 1: got to stop telling people what you're against and begin
- 13:06Speaker 1: to tell people what you're for. We just had enough
- 13:09Speaker 1: of that. And you see that down in Georgia with
- 13:11Speaker 1: the negative ads they're playing. So, um, will it get
- 13:15Speaker 1: better after Trump? Yeah? Um, but will it still be
- 13:18Speaker 1: hard to push forth an agenda this skill for the country. Yeah,
- 13:21Speaker 1: that's why Georgia is so important. So anybody listening down
- 13:24Speaker 1: and we got relatively good to get on the phone,
- 13:27Speaker 1: make phone calls, do everything you can, because those two
- 13:29Speaker 1: seats are that important. Yeah, and because what I what
- 13:33Speaker 1: I've told people before, the Republicans are interesting because last
- 13:37Speaker 1: you just took several years ago when also he had
- 13:40Speaker 1: gotten into a run off of news four percent and
- 13:43Speaker 1: Karen handled she had only had I gotten eighteen percent. Well,
- 13:46Speaker 1: when the official election came through, she won fifty eight.
- 13:49Speaker 1: His number didn't really even move. His percentage stayed the same.
- 13:52Speaker 1: And so that's what happens. The Republican Party really goes
- 13:56Speaker 1: out into the rural community and have a stranglehold on
- 13:59Speaker 1: that voice. And that's where the Democrats have to get
- 14:01Speaker 1: out there. I know that Stacy Abrahams has has played
- 14:04Speaker 1: a major role in that. Do you think she's going
- 14:06Speaker 1: to have a role in the Biden cabinet abandon abandon
- 14:09Speaker 1: Brighton presidency right in the next four years. I'm not
- 14:12Speaker 1: gonna say she's gonna have a cabinet seat. Just Stacy's
- 14:18Speaker 1: running for governor. So yeah, I just put that. Chalk
- 14:21Speaker 1: that up and chalk that up. She's running. She's run
- 14:25Speaker 1: up for governor in two so you know, going to
- 14:28Speaker 1: chalk that up. Stacy, Stacy did the work and so
- 14:31Speaker 1: um you know she she Georgia Blue and so um
- 14:35Speaker 1: you know she has the ability to run. She's gonna
- 14:37Speaker 1: raise the money and she's gonna make it a local racing.
- 14:39Speaker 1: We'll see what happens. Well, let's let's just I'm gonna
- 14:41Speaker 1: wrap up this on the start about the I saw
- 14:44Speaker 1: your TV or the cards to uh, the civil Arday,
- 14:48Speaker 1: civil arrest tied to how the treatment of black men.
- 14:52Speaker 1: You know, I saw what Van Jones did. When did
- 14:55Speaker 1: when Biden won? You know, and I know that when
- 14:59Speaker 1: that we can when uh all the marches going, A
- 15:03Speaker 1: lot of my white friends called me and then basically apologize.
- 15:07Speaker 1: They basically said, I didn't know. They basically asked me,
- 15:10Speaker 1: is it real? Do you do? You do you live
- 15:12Speaker 1: a life like that? For you don't feel safe, that
- 15:15Speaker 1: you don't feel comfortable that you walk in the room
- 15:18Speaker 1: and you feel that people are looking at you, not
- 15:20Speaker 1: because of what you can do or what they think
- 15:23Speaker 1: that you might do and it might be wrong. I see, Yes,
- 15:25Speaker 1: that's my life every day as a black man. And
- 15:29Speaker 1: it's really it really was compelling to see your reaction
- 15:32Speaker 1: and ste Van jones reaction because of the fact that
- 15:35Speaker 1: we know as black men that it's not gonna change.
- 15:40Speaker 1: I'm still gonna be perceived by a group of people
- 15:43Speaker 1: as a negative image. I'm still gonna be perceived when
- 15:46Speaker 1: they that I might be selling crack if I get
- 15:48Speaker 1: in a good car. You know that that. I think
- 15:51Speaker 1: that's the reason that I think that's the reason that
- 15:53Speaker 1: you and I are participating in this program because although
- 15:56Speaker 1: we acknowledge the harsh realities of our experience, we also
- 15:59Speaker 1: have that faith and hoping the future. And you know,
- 16:01Speaker 1: the reason we're helping Borries is because it gives young
- 16:04Speaker 1: black men like you and me an opportunity to have
- 16:07Speaker 1: dreams of the future and go out and when we
- 16:10Speaker 1: have to tear down these stereotypes and rip them apart.
- 16:12Speaker 1: So yeah, it was an emotional summer. It's a hard
- 16:14Speaker 1: summer because I raised little kids and we just have
- 16:18Speaker 1: to make sure that whatever we're doing, we are an
- 16:20Speaker 1: example for them and we continue to destroy these stereotypes.
- 16:23Speaker 1: And one of the ways we do that, it's like
- 16:25Speaker 1: giving back and by one of the ways we get
- 16:28Speaker 1: back is to participate in programs like the one we're
- 16:31Speaker 1: doing and making sure that Bores College not just survives,
- 16:35Speaker 1: but thrives. Thank you, Car said, well, thank you, thank
- 16:38Speaker 1: you for being a part the new ship. Gonna drop
- 16:39Speaker 1: our live on Tuesday for about thirty minutes doing the
- 16:42Speaker 1: live stream of thon. But today is hype day for
- 16:44Speaker 1: the Vores College stream of Thon. We're trying to raise
- 16:47Speaker 1: a million dollars. Everybody tused to be the other official
- 16:49Speaker 1: days to start making the donations. Thank you p card,
- 16:51Speaker 1: but coming on money making conversations, Stay strong and I
- 16:54Speaker 1: appreciate you. Man, don't change. Thank you appreciate it. I
- 16:58Speaker 1: have a great day, I won't appreciate. If you want
