- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In Mark Chapter 7, the Pharisees
- 0:46and scribes come to Jesus with an accusation after seeing His
- 0:49disciples eating without first washing their hands.
- 0:52Verse 3 tells us that the Pharisees and all the Jews do
- 0:55not eat unless they carefully wash their hands, thus observing
- 0:59the traditions of the elders. Now keep in mind the keyword of
- 1:02that verse tradition. We're going to hear that word
- 1:05four more times in this short section of Mark Chapter 7.
- 1:09The Pharisees and scribes approach Jesus in verse 5 and
- 1:12ask, why do your disciples not walk according to the traditions
- 1:16of the elders, but eat bread with impure hands?
- 1:19Now listen to Jesus response in the next 4 verses.
- 1:23And he said to them, rightly did Isaiah prophecy of you
- 1:26hypocrites, as it is written, This people honors me with their
- 1:30lips, but their heart is far away from me.
- 1:33But in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the
- 1:36precepts of men, neglecting the commandment of God.
- 1:39You hold to the tradition of men.
- 1:42He was also saying to them, You are experts at setting aside the
- 1:46commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.
- 1:50Jesus tells the Pharisees and scribes that they have neglected
- 1:53God's commandments in order to keep their own tradition.
- 1:56In other words, they've laid aside what God actually said in
- 2:00order to follow their own way of doing things, ignoring the
- 2:03Scriptures in favor of religious tradition.
- 2:07Moses didn't command all the ceremonial washing that the
- 2:09Pharisees and scribes were trying to hold Jesus disciples
- 2:12to. God didn't command that.
- 2:14That was the instruction of men over and above God's law.
- 2:18And in that process of obeying the religious tradition, the
- 2:21Pharisees and scribes had gotten it twisted.
- 2:24They'd elevated man's teaching above God's.
- 2:27They traded true worship for vain worship.
- 2:30They traded true doctrine for human teaching and tradition.
- 2:34Now in the 21st century, it may not be hand washing that we
- 2:38elevate to the level of doctrine, But I wonder how often
- 2:41we, whether purposefully or unknowingly, how we as
- 2:44Christians substitute our own customs, our own preferences for
- 2:48what God has commanded. For example, God has commanded
- 2:52that the church fellowship together.
- 2:54We see that throughout the New Testament, but He hasn't given
- 2:57us the format, schedule, menu, and table setting for a church
- 3:00fellowship. So if we raise any of those
- 3:03things to the level of God's command to fellowship, we're
- 3:06following in the Pharisees footsteps.
- 3:08Another example, God has commanded that we praise Him
- 3:11through song. But if we allow our musical
- 3:14preferences to let us ignore His command to bear with one another
- 3:18and love one another, then we've missed the point.
- 3:21We've traded real doctrine for human tradition, so search your
- 3:25own heart. Where have you allowed your own
- 3:28preferences and traditions to take too high a place?
- 3:31And what of God's instruction to you?
- 3:34Is it causing you to miss? Don't let man's precepts replace
- 3:38God's good commands for His people.
