- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In John chapter 19, we read the
- 0:45fourth and final Gospel account of the crucifixion of Jesus
- 0:48Christ in the custody of Pilate. Jesus is mocked, scourged, and
- 0:53physically and verbally abused multiple times throughout this
- 0:56ordeal. Though Pilate indicates that he
- 0:58can find no guilt in Jesus, he is however, swayed by the Jews.
- 1:03They cry out, crucify, crucify. And when Pilate tries to hand
- 1:07Jesus back over to the Jews for them to do with him what they
- 1:09please, they answer saying we have a law, and by that law he
- 1:14ought to die because he made himself out to be the Son of
- 1:16God. Pilate is struck by an even
- 1:19greater fear of the people. He can see and hear that they
- 1:23want to see Jesus killed, and eventually he relents to their
- 1:26wishes. At first glance, it would appear
- 1:29that the Jewish leaders in the Roman government have ultimate
- 1:32authority in Jesus arrest and trial.
- 1:35It would appear that they have the upper hand, that he is
- 1:37subject to their will and to their power.
- 1:41We know, and the Bible makes very clear, that this is not the
- 1:44case. Listen to the exchange between
- 1:46Pilate and Jesus in verses 8 through 11, after the Jews have
- 1:50called for the death of Jesus. It says.
- 1:53Therefore, when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more
- 1:56afraid, and he entered into the praetorium again and said to
- 1:59Jesus, Where are you from? But Jesus gave him no answer.
- 2:03So Pilate said to him, You do not speak to me.
- 2:06Do you not know that I have authority to release you, and I
- 2:09have authority to crucify you? Jesus answered, You would have
- 2:13no authority over me unless it had been given to you from
- 2:15above. For this reason he who delivered
- 2:18me to you has the greater sin. Pilate tells Jesus that He is
- 2:23the one in authority. He has the power and the
- 2:25jurisdiction to release Jesus or to order him to be crucified.
- 2:30Jesus understands the deeper truth, though.
- 2:32The human political authority that Pilate possesses has been
- 2:36granted to him by God. Romans 13 one, in telling us to
- 2:40submit to governmental authority, says this.
- 2:42Every person is to be in subjection to the governing
- 2:44authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and
- 2:48those which exist are established by God.
- 2:51There is no authority except from God.
- 2:54God granted Pilate his position. He allowed him to have political
- 2:58power. The authority he possessed was
- 3:01not earned or owned, but on loan from the omnipotent God of the
- 3:04universe, the very God who stood before him in human form, Jesus
- 3:09Christ. Proverbs 21 verse one says the
- 3:13King's heart is like channels of water in the hand of the Lord.
- 3:16He turns it wherever he wishes. God is over all things.
- 3:20He possesses the ultimate power and authority over all
- 3:22governments, leaders, and nations, as He possesses it over
- 3:26every molecule of his creation. So why make this distinction?
- 3:31Why does it matter whether Jesus has the authority or Pilot does
- 3:33in this moment? We know he's going to the cross
- 3:36either way. Well, it matters immensely
- 3:39because if Jesus is the ultimate authority, and he is, then his
- 3:43life is not being taken from him.
- 3:45He's not surprised by this outcome.
- 3:47It's by design. It's by choice.
- 3:49He is laying down his life. This is an execution, yes, but
- 3:54more than any other execution could ever be, this is a
- 3:57sacrifice. The King of the universe is
- 3:59laying down his life for the very ones who are trying to take
- 4:03it from him. This is our Savior, and this is
- 4:06his love. That, as Romans 58 says, But God
- 4:10demonstrates his own love toward us, and that while we were yet
- 4:14sinners, Christ died for us.
