- 0:00This is episode 9 fireside chat and the title is How do I add
- 0:04accountability and wise counsel into my life?
- 0:10Hey res Pastor Daniel here with the fireside chat.
- 0:14We're in an ongoing discussion over the last many fireside
- 0:19chats about Christian friendship, Christian community,
- 0:22and how that pertains to the Christian life inside our church
- 0:25and how it shapes our culture in our church.
- 0:28How do I answer this question today and maybe give you a
- 0:31couple examples? And that is, how do I add
- 0:34accountability and wise counsel into my life?
- 0:38How do I add accountability and wise counsel into my life?
- 0:41We know from previous episodes that both of those are extremely
- 0:46important if we want to grow in Christ.
- 0:48And we also know they're difficult.
- 0:50They're difficult to Foster and grow and on.
- 0:52So I want to talk about the process of adding them and I
- 0:55want to give you some examples of where maybe that doesn't go
- 0:58well, where it could go well. And I had a a few weeks ago, I
- 1:02had a guy come up to me. He hadn't been in church in in
- 1:05quite a while, months at least, maybe maybe years.
- 1:08And came to me after a particularly, I think,
- 1:11convicting sermon in which he'd been really the Holy Spirit
- 1:17really worked, worked on him. And he catches me in the lobby
- 1:19and he says, Pastor Daniel, I need your help.
- 1:22I want you to hold me accountable for a series of
- 1:24things. And I, I, I paused it for a
- 1:27second. I don't want to chuckle, but I
- 1:28just, you know, I want to say, hey, hold on, hold on, right?
- 1:32This is not the way that you we go about it because I don't have
- 1:36access to your life. I don't even know you.
- 1:39I, I don't have a frequency of access to see you enough to be
- 1:43able to hold you accountable. You haven't, you haven't been
- 1:46here months, right? Let's talk about how that works.
- 1:49And so I wanted to talk to you about how that works.
- 1:51So what's the first step? If I'm looking at my life, maybe
- 1:55doing a little inventory and I think, man, I don't really have
- 1:57any close accountability and I don't have any wise counsel in
- 1:59my life. What's the first step?
- 2:00OK, this could sound a little bit counterintuitive, but it's
- 2:03going to make sense. The first step, if you realize I
- 2:06don't have any accountability and I don't have any wise
- 2:08counsel in my life, is to start by investing in other people.
- 2:13Yep, that's that's where you start.
- 2:15I know that sounds weird. You find people to serve.
- 2:20The first step is to serve others before you start
- 2:24consuming and taking. So even though what you
- 2:26recognized in your life and and by the way, admirable that the
- 2:31the work of the spirit in your life has is is showing you that
- 2:33you you lack that accountability.
- 2:35You lack that wise counsel. That's awesome.
- 2:37But the first step is always to serve others, because that's how
- 2:40Jesus modeled this to us. Even though you see needs in
- 2:44your life, we start by serving other people.
- 2:47Mark 1044 through 45. And Jesus said it.
- 2:50Whoever would be first among you must be slave of all.
- 2:55For even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve and
- 2:59to give his life as ransom for many.
- 3:03So we have a servant mentality. We serve before we consume.
- 3:06Galatians 513 says, for you were called the freedom brothers.
- 3:09Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh,
- 3:13but through love serve one another.
- 3:16So how do I go about serving others?
- 3:18And how would serving others lead me to actually getting this
- 3:22accountability and wise counsel in my life?
- 3:24Well, you're going to need to foster relationships with other
- 3:27people in order to build enough rapport with them and, and
- 3:32enough relational equity with them that they can hold you
- 3:36accountable and, and, and that you can trust their wise
- 3:40counsel. And that's going to take time.
- 3:42And the way you start is not by asking them to do a bunch of
- 3:45things for you, the way you start building that
- 3:48relationship. And by the way, some of our
- 3:50previous fireside chats have talked a lot about building
- 3:52Christian relationships. So if you may miss some of
- 3:55those, it may be it, it may be edifying to go back and, and
- 3:59listen to a couple of those. But we, we start by serving
- 4:02others, by being a good listener.
- 4:04So what you're looking for in, in that relationship is someone
- 4:07that's going to listen well and pay attention to kind of what's
- 4:09going on in your life. So you start by modeling that by
- 4:12becoming a good listener to someone else, right.
- 4:16If I want to be teachable, I don't want to.
- 4:18I want to be able to actually listen and receive
- 4:21accountability. I want to be able to listen and
- 4:22receive wise counsel. I've got to become a good
- 4:26listener. And so I start by investing in
- 4:30people's lives and listening. I, I build those relationships
- 4:34in the small group. Maybe it's in a ministry that I
- 4:38serve in, maybe I've gone out the coffee with some, some
- 4:40people in any of these avenues or methods.
- 4:43However this works, I become a good listener.
- 4:46I, I start actively listening to what's going on in their life,
- 4:49paying attention to what's going on in their life and, and, and
- 4:51speaking back into their life. I just want to listen, I want to
- 4:55hear what's going on And, and, and it's probably one of the
- 4:57fastest ways that you're going to build relationship is, is
- 5:01really paying attention to another individual.
- 5:04And then as you listen, finding ways to serve them, right,
- 5:09you're investing in them. And so you spend enough time
- 5:13listening what's going on in someone's life in the context.
- 5:16Again, you need some sort of frequency of access, right?
- 5:18I got AI need a small group, I need a mentorship, I need a
- 5:23ministry I'm serving in. I need, I kind of see those
- 5:26people, right? And, and look, we have previous
- 5:29episodes on kind of choosing the right friends.
- 5:31I mean, these people need to love Jesus.
- 5:34They need to love the church. They need to love you.
- 5:36We've talked about some of these things, but but I really need to
- 5:39listen now as I'm trying to be a better listener.
- 5:43One of the things I'm really paying attention to as I'm
- 5:45developing this relationship in order to really bake
- 5:48accountability and good counsel into my life is I'm really going
- 5:53to take a self-assessment of how well I do when I get corrected.
- 5:56I think that's a big deal, right?
- 5:58So when someone tells you something you don't agree with
- 6:00esecially about you, am I good at listening to that?
- 6:03Do I actually receive something from it?
- 6:06Am I good at asking clarifying questions?
- 6:07Hey, what do you mean by that, right?
- 6:10Those are, those are important things that you need to learn if
- 6:14you want to get accountability and wise counsel in your life.
- 6:17Otherwise, it's wasted on you, right?
- 6:19And, and, and it won't last. If you're terrible at receiving
- 6:21feedback, it will not take very long for people to stop giving
- 6:24you feedback. If you're terrible at receiving
- 6:26correction, it will not take very long for people to stop
- 6:28correcting you. If you're horrible at receiving
- 6:31wise counsel, it's not going to take very long before people
- 6:34don't give you their wisdom. Not casting pearls among the
- 6:37swine, right? We're not giving wise counsel
- 6:40where it's not even received, where it's not warranted, where
- 6:42it's not wanted. And so you're proving you want
- 6:46wise counsel. You're proving that you want
- 6:48accountability by being a good listener.
- 6:52I demand that I learn something from every conversation.
- 6:56So someone is ripping me a new one.
- 6:59I mean, just tearing me up, but with criticism, I'm going to
- 7:03find some nugget in there that I can grow from.
- 7:06We would call that eating the meat and spitting out the bones.
- 7:09Right? Now, here's the thing.
- 7:12Let's say you're building this a relationship with someone or a
- 7:14group of guys or gals or a small group or ministry partners and
- 7:19that you volunteer with whatever these contexts, right?
- 7:21You're building this and you've been really practicing on
- 7:25listening and kind of investing in their life, finding ways to
- 7:28serve those people. And you, you think you got to
- 7:31the point where man, I, I think I've, I've earned enough.
- 7:33This relationship's deep enough. It's safe enough that I can, I,
- 7:37I would really like accountability and wise counsel
- 7:40in this relationship. OK, here's the next step.
- 7:42Ready. This is, this is the shocker.
- 7:44You ask for it. Yeah, that's right.
- 7:47You ask for. So in the context of the
- 7:49relationship, now that you've built by listening, by serving
- 7:54others, you then ask for it. Now that doesn't come a week
- 7:58into the relationship, right? That, that it's going to take
- 8:01some time. It takes time to fall in love.
- 8:03It takes time to build relationships.
- 8:04It could take time for you to listen.
- 8:05It's going to take time for you to find opportunities to serve
- 8:08someone. But, but in time, when you built
- 8:10that relationship, you're going to ask for the accountability.
- 8:14You're going to say, Hey, would you be willing to hold me
- 8:18accountable to something in my life?
- 8:20And, and, and you're, you're going to accept the answer
- 8:22because the answer may be no. The answer may be a very polite
- 8:26way of saying no, and that's OK, but you can ask for it.
- 8:29You can be clear on what you want out of that accountability.
- 8:32So if it's that you're really struggling with a specific sin
- 8:39in your life or a specific thing that is morally neutral but has
- 8:44begin to have too much maybe of, of, of an influence on you,
- 8:47you're going to say, hey, here's what it is.
- 8:49Here are the ways that I often succumb to this sin or this
- 8:53area. And here's what I here are the
- 8:55markers I need you to look out for.
- 8:56I mean, you're laying it all out out there and you're saying what
- 8:59I'd love for you to do is hold me accountable in this way.
- 9:02I'd love you to text me once a week.
- 9:03I'd love you to ask me these questions.
- 9:05I'd like, I mean, you're be clear, be articulate, don't be
- 9:09vague. Ask for it.
- 9:11If you want accountability wise counsel in your life, number
- 9:16one, you're going to earn it by serving other people, becoming a
- 9:19good listener and investing in their life and then giving that
- 9:22some time and space to develop. And then when appropriate, And
- 9:26you're going to have to feel that out a little bit based on
- 9:28the the growth in the relationship, you're going to
- 9:31ask for it and you're going to be specific about what you're
- 9:33looking for and you're going to walk through that.
- 9:35And then again, if you get good at accepting the wise counsel,
- 9:41if you get good at accepting the correction and show that you
- 9:46actually treasure it, what what will happen is you, you will
- 9:50have shown the other party or, or people in that context that
- 9:55you really do value it. And you'll find that that
- 9:58they're willing to invest their time and their energy in that
- 10:00with you because you value it. I hope that's helpful for you
- 10:03guys. I know each of these situations
- 10:06sometimes a little bit different.
- 10:08So I talk a little bit in generalities around some of
- 10:10this, but I will, just from personal experience, I will tell
- 10:13you that close accountability and good wise counsel in your
- 10:18life is so invaluable. There's not really a parallel to
- 10:22it. And we were designed for it.
- 10:25We need it. It will help us grow and we can
- 10:28earn it. And we can earn it through our
- 10:30own willingness to serve others. Be humble in in our listening,
- 10:35particularly around correction and things we disagree with.
- 10:39And in time that will actually pay off as a phenomenal
- 10:44relational investment in our life to help us love Jesus more,
- 10:48but to look more and more like Jesus Christ.
- 10:50I love you, Rez. Until next time, Pastor Daniel.
