- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarfl Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Welcome to Connecting the Dots from Snarfl.
- 0:18I'm Alex. And I'm Morgan. And happy Monday. It
- 0:21is December 1st, 2025, and we are kicking off
- 0:25a new month. We are. And we're starting with
- 0:27a quick look at the landscape out there. Yeah,
- 0:29let's do it. Here in Sacramento, it's patchy
- 0:32fog, but that's going to burn off to a mostly
- 0:35sunny day, high of around 52. Sounds pretty nice.
- 0:38Nationally, though, it's a bit of a different
- 0:40story. There's a major storm system moving across
- 0:43the central and eastern U .S. Right. So if you're
- 0:46traveling, heads up, heavy rain in the Gulf Coast
- 0:48and deep south. And you're looking at a wintry
- 0:50mix, maybe even a glaze of ice, from the Ozarks
- 0:53all the way through the Ohio Valley. Plus some
- 0:56accumulating snow from the central plains into
- 0:57the Great Lakes, so yeah, be careful out there.
- 1:01And on the financial side, markets are a little
- 1:04mixed to start the week. Just a little. The Dow
- 1:06closed down, what, about a quarter of a percent,
- 1:0847 ,460? Yeah, and the S &P 500 was basically
- 1:12flat. But the bigger picture, the weekly change
- 1:15for both, is still pretty positive. Holding onto
- 1:17those gains. The real story today, though, seems
- 1:20to be Bitcoin. Definitely. It took a pretty significant
- 1:22hit, down over 4 .5 % for the day, closing at
- 1:2586 ,264. That's a classic crypto Monday for you.
- 1:31A little bit of a reset. It is. Now before we
- 1:33get into our main stories, we want to thank our
- 1:35sponsor, Old Glory. Absolutely. Old Glory is
- 1:39an iconic music and sports fan merch store. And
- 1:42with the holidays coming up, it's a fantastic
- 1:44place to find a gift. For sure. And they're giving
- 1:46our listeners a great deal. If you use the promo
- 1:49code SNARFL at checkout, you get 15 % off your
- 1:52entire purchase. That's a solid discount. You
- 1:54can find them at OldGlory .com. OK, let's connect
- 1:57some dots. We've pulled the top three stories
- 2:00from our internal morning star, the SnarfleTech
- 2:03article report. And we are starting with one
- 2:05that is already making a lot of people, let's
- 2:08just say, frustrated. I think that's putting
- 2:10it mildly. It's Netflix. And they are quietly
- 2:13killing their casting feature. That's right.
- 2:15So that little cast button you use on your phone
- 2:18or tablet to send a show to your TV. For most
- 2:21modern devices, it's disappearing. And we're
- 2:24talking about things like the newer Chromecast
- 2:27with Google TV, the Google TV streamer, basically
- 2:30anything with its own remote. Exactly. The idea
- 2:33now is you have to use the TV's remote and the
- 2:36native Netflix app on the device. No more phone
- 2:38control. And the reason they gave, which apparently
- 2:41came from a customer care rep, is just it's a
- 2:44real head -scratcher. It is. They said it's too
- 2:46improve the customer experience. Improve it by
- 2:50removing the feature that lets you use your phone's
- 2:52keyboard to search. Which is, I mean, infinitely
- 2:56easier than clicking around an on -screen keyboard
- 2:58with a clunky TV remote. So whose experience
- 3:01is this actually improving? It feels like it's
- 3:03not the customers. Well, that's the real question,
- 3:06isn't it? From their perspective, it's probably
- 3:07about control and... Technical simplicity. How
- 3:11so? If everything happens inside the native app
- 3:14on the TV, they have total control over the playback
- 3:17quality. There are fewer variables, fewer things
- 3:20that can go wrong between a phone and a TV. Ah,
- 3:23so it reduces customer service calls and gives
- 3:25them cleaner data on what you're doing inside
- 3:27their ecosystem. Precisely. It's an operational
- 3:30win for them, even if it's a user experience
- 3:32loss for us. Now, the sources did point out a
- 3:35couple of exceptions. A couple of very specific
- 3:37ones. It still works on older Chromecast models.
- 3:41You know, the little dongles that don't even
- 3:42have a remote. OK, and on some TVs that have
- 3:45Google Cast built right in. Right. But here is
- 3:48the real kicker. The thing that shows what this
- 3:51is really about. Lay it on me. Even on those
- 3:53old devices where it can still work. Yeah. It's
- 3:56disabled. if you're on Netflix's cheaper ad -supported
- 3:59plan. Wait, what? So if I'm paying less, I lose
- 4:02the feature no matter what hardware I have? Correct.
- 4:05The only people who can still use casting on
- 4:08that legacy hardware are the ones paying for
- 4:10the more expensive ad -free plans. So this isn't
- 4:12just a technical change. It's a way to nudge
- 4:15people toward the premium subscriptions. It absolutely
- 4:18is. It's tying a convenience feature directly
- 4:21to a higher price point. And, you know, we've
- 4:23seen this playbook before. You're talking about
- 4:25AirPlay. Exactly. Back in 2019, they dropped
- 4:27support for that too. The message is clear. They
- 4:30want to control the experience and premium features
- 4:33will cost a premium price. So if Netflix is all
- 4:36about Titan control, our next story is about,
- 4:38well, the complete opposite. It's about where
- 4:41creative power is really exploding. Yes. Let's
- 4:44talk about Black Forest Labs, a German startup
- 4:47that is just on an absolute tear. The numbers
- 4:50here are frankly a list staggering. They just
- 4:52raised a $300 million series B round, which is
- 4:55huge on its own, but it's the valuation that's
- 4:58the real story, right? They're now valued at
- 5:00$3 .25 billion and get this. They were valued
- 5:04at 1 billion back in September of 2024. This
- 5:06is just hyper growth. I mean, that's an incredible
- 5:09jump in a little over a year. So what exactly
- 5:11do they do that has investors like Salesforce,
- 5:14Nvidia, and Canva pouring money in? They're a
- 5:17visual intelligence company. Basically, they
- 5:19build foundational AI models for generating and
- 5:22editing images. You've probably heard of their
- 5:25open source models, the FLUX family. Ah, OK.
- 5:29These are the models that are already super popular
- 5:31in places like hugging face with tens of millions
- 5:34of downloads. The very same. And they were founded
- 5:37by some of the key researchers who helped create
- 5:39stable diffusion and stability AI. So they have
- 5:42the pedigree. So they're not just some new upstart.
- 5:45They're pioneers in the space. Exactly. And their
- 5:48tools are already being integrated by Fortune
- 5:50500 companies. Adobe, Canva, Deutsche Telekom.
- 5:54They're all using BFL's models. Which explains
- 5:57why Canva and Figma Ventures are investors. They're
- 5:59buying into the tech that will power their own
- 6:02platforms. And the tech is getting seriously
- 6:05good. Their new model, FLUX2, can generate images
- 6:10up to 4K resolution. Wow. With really good text
- 6:13and image rendering. We're not talking about
- 6:14weird six -fingered hands anymore. This is professional
- 6:17-grade creative work. And it really proves that
- 6:19an independent lab, and one based in Germany,
- 6:21no less, can compete head -to -head with the
- 6:24biggest names in generative AI. It's a huge deal.
- 6:26It shows that balancing open research with enterprise
- 6:29solutions can be an incredibly powerful profitable
- 6:34combination. So from the tools that create the
- 6:37images to the final product that breaks the box
- 6:40office, let's talk about Disney. Yes. Our third
- 6:43story is a much needed dose of good news for
- 6:46Hollywood. Zootopia 2 absolutely shattered records
- 6:50over the Thanksgiving weekend. The numbers are
- 6:52just colossal. Over $556 million globally. In
- 6:57its first five days. That is just, wow. And that
- 7:00makes it the highest global animated film opening
- 7:03of all time. Of all time. And the fourth highest
- 7:05global debut for any movie, animated or not.
- 7:09disease IP is still an absolute powerhouse domestically
- 7:12it did great 156 million here in the US and Canada
- 7:15But the real jaw dropper is the international
- 7:17number. It really is. You have to look at China.
- 7:20Unbelievable. Nearly half of that global total
- 7:22came from China alone. Two hundred seventy two
- 7:24million dollars. Making it Hollywood's highest
- 7:26grossing animated movie ever in that country.
- 7:28It even beat the first Zootopia. That just goes
- 7:30to show how much global appeal that franchise
- 7:33has. It's a massive win for Disney and a massive
- 7:35win for theater owners. You know, we're always
- 7:37talking about how the box office is still trying
- 7:39to get back to. pre -pandemic 2019 levels. This
- 7:43is the kind of hit that gives them a real shot
- 7:45in the arm. It proves people will still show
- 7:47up in huge numbers for a true cinema event. It
- 7:51really kicks off the holiday movie season on
- 7:53a high note. It's funny, you look at these three
- 7:55stories together. Yeah. You have Netflix locking
- 7:58things down, Black Forest Labs blowing the doors
- 8:01open on creation, and Disney just proving that
- 8:04the old school polished blockbuster still reigns
- 8:08supreme. That's a great way to put it. Okay,
- 8:10before we wrap this up, we want to give a shout
- 8:12out to our other sponsor. That's right, Scony.
- 8:14They make premium golf shoes. If you're looking
- 8:16for that perfect blend of performance on the
- 8:18course and style off it, you should definitely
- 8:21check them out. And like our other sponsors,
- 8:22they have a deal for you. Use the promo code
- 8:25SNARFL at checkout and you'll get 15 % off your
- 8:28entire purchase. Find them at scony .com. Alright,
- 8:31let's do a quick recap. What have we connected
- 8:33today? First, we looked at Netflix's move to
- 8:36killcasting. It's a strategic trade -off, really.
- 8:39They're sacrificing user convenience for more
- 8:41platform control and trying to push people to
- 8:45more expensive plans. Then we talked about the
- 8:47absolute explosion in funding for Black Forest
- 8:50Labs, a $3 billion valuation showing that open
- 8:54source visual AI is a massive competitive force.
- 8:58And finally, Disney's Zootopia 2. It's a reminder
- 9:01that powerful, well -made IP still has immense
- 9:05global drawing power, breaking records all over
- 9:08the world. Which leaves us with a final thought
- 9:10to chew on for the week. You have Black Forest
- 9:12Labs raising billions to build these incredible
- 9:15AI visual tools. Tools that can make animation
- 9:18faster, cheaper, and maybe even better. So, how
- 9:21long before those exact tools completely change
- 9:24the way a studio like Disney makes a movie like
- 9:26Zootopia? And maybe the bigger question is, how
- 9:29long until those tools get integrated directly
- 9:31into a platform like Netflix, letting almost
- 9:33anyone create content? The lines between creation,
- 9:37distribution, and control are fluring faster
- 9:39than ever. These stories really show you where
- 9:42all the action is. We're here to help at Snarful,
