- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarfle Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Welcome back. You're tuned in for our
- 0:17look at today's sources here on Thursday, September
- 0:2025th, 2025. I'm Alex. And I'm Morgan. Good morning.
- 0:23So before we really get into it today, looking
- 0:25at mobile chips, teen safety online, and AI music.
- 0:31Let's just quickly check the climate. Absolutely.
- 0:33We're coming to you from Sacramento, of course.
- 0:35Looking like a high of 88 degrees today. Maybe
- 0:38a slight chance of showers later. Decent day.
- 0:41Looking at the markets from yesterday, things
- 0:43were a bit down. The Dow Jones closed off 247
- 0:46points. That's about... 0 .53%. Yeah, and the
- 0:50S &P 500 followed suit down about 31 points.
- 0:53So almost half a percent there, too. Bitcoin
- 0:55also took a hit down over $1 ,900. Ouch. Ouch,
- 0:59indeed. But some good news on the sports front
- 1:01are San Francisco Giants. They pulled off a win
- 1:04against the Cardinals yesterday. Oh, fantastic.
- 1:06What was the score? 4 to 3. Close one, Jose Boteau
- 1:09got the win and Casey Schmidt went three for
- 1:12four. Nice solid performance. We needed that
- 1:15one. Definitely needed that. All right, a little
- 1:16bit of sunshine before we dive into tech. Exactly.
- 1:19And speaking of good stuff, we got to give a
- 1:21shout out to our partners over at Pins and Aces.
- 1:24That's Pins and Aces. Oh yeah, great gear. Seriously,
- 1:26premium golf apparel and accessories. If you
- 1:29want to look sharp on the course, check them
- 1:31out. And hey, use our promo code SNARFUL. That's
- 1:33S -N -A -R -F -U -L at checkout. And you get
- 1:37what? A huge 21 % off your whole order. Just
- 1:41head over to pinsandaces .com. 21%. Nice. OK,
- 1:46let's transition then. We've got three really
- 1:48interesting stories pulled from the Morningstar
- 1:50report today. First up, raw mobile power. Oh,
- 1:54yeah. Qualcomm, they just held their Snapdragon
- 1:56summit and basically dropped the mic with their
- 1:59new chip. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 SoC. They're
- 2:02calling it the world's fastest mobile system
- 2:04on a chip. Big claim. It is a big claim, but
- 2:07the tech behind it, it's a three nanometer chip.
- 2:10Yeah. Which is tiny. And a tiny size is key,
- 2:13right? It's not just about being faster, it's
- 2:15about being more efficient. Yeah. You have less
- 2:16power to get that speed. Exactly. So the numbers
- 2:18they're throwing around, the new Orion CPU, their
- 2:21third gen, is apparently up to 35 % faster than
- 2:24the last one. 35 % is a jump. But the efficiency
- 2:27part. That's maybe even more important for everyday
- 2:30use. They're saying 16 % power savings compared
- 2:33to the predecessor. 16%. Okay, so that means
- 2:36potentially better battery life, even when the
- 2:38phone's doing more. That's the idea. They've
- 2:40got this core set up to really fast prime cores,
- 2:43hitting up to 4 .6 gigahertz, and then six performance
- 2:47cores. It balances power and, well, performance.
- 2:51Makes sense. But it sounds like the really big
- 2:53story here isn't just games running faster, it's
- 2:56AI. Totally. They're leaning hard into this idea
- 2:59of the agentic AI era, future -proofing, you
- 3:03know? Agentic AI, meaning the AI sort of acts
- 3:06for you more proactively on the device itself.
- 3:09Yeah, that's the vision. Moving that heavy AI
- 3:12processing from the cloud. Right onto your phone.
- 3:15The new Hexagon NPU, the Neural Processing Unit,
- 3:17is 37 % faster. 37%, wow. So they're pinning
- 3:21this picture of AI agents that can see what you
- 3:24see through the camera, hear what you hear. And
- 3:26process it all, right there, in real time. Think
- 3:28with you, as they put it. Which has huge implications
- 3:31for privacy too, doesn't it? If it's happening
- 3:33locally. It really does. Less data potentially
- 3:35going off to server somewhere, plus the connectivity
- 3:37is nuts. Right. Wi -Fi 7, Bluetooth 6. And the
- 3:415G modem. The X85 5G modem. They're talking peak
- 3:44download speeds of 12 .5 gigabits per second,
- 3:47which is just theoretical maybe, but still. Bonkers
- 3:51speed. OK. And you know cameras are always a
- 3:53huge selling point for phones. What's new there?
- 3:56Well, that AI focus continues. There's a new
- 3:59AI image signal processor working with that faster
- 4:03NPU. Yeah. Get this, it can segment images into
- 4:06over 250 layers. Think about the editing possibilities.
- 4:09It's 150 layers, wow. Yeah. And new features
- 4:12like video object eraser, pretty self -explanatory,
- 4:16but also something called TruePic with C2PA support.
- 4:19C2PA, hang on, that's the content provenance
- 4:20and authenticity thing, right, for verifying
- 4:22media? Exactly, the coalition. It basically embeds
- 4:25cryptographic proof into photos and videos. So
- 4:27you know where and when it was taken and if it's
- 4:29been messed with. Precisely. Building that capability
- 4:32right into the ship at the moment of capture.
- 4:36That's a potentially massive step against, you
- 4:39know, deep fakes and misinformation. That's actually
- 4:41huge. Connecting chip speed directly to content
- 4:44trust. Okay, so which phones are getting this
- 4:46powerhouse first? Well, the usual suspects in
- 4:49the Android world are lining up. Samsung, obviously.
- 4:52Sony, OnePlus, Xiaomi. Asus, Honor, Vivo. Basically
- 4:56everyone. Pretty much. Confirmed first launch
- 4:59though. Looks like the Xiaomi 17 series. Apparently
- 5:01they're skipping the number 16. Xiaomi 17 first.
- 5:04Okay. Any other purge with that one? Yeah, they're
- 5:07also boasting 100 watt universal fast charging.
- 5:10Finally, some standardization maybe. 100 watts
- 5:13in universal. That's great. But the one everyone
- 5:15really watches is Samsung, right? The S26 Ultra.
- 5:17Always. And Samsung usually gets a slightly souped
- 5:20up version that for Galaxy chip, probably the
- 5:22best binning. Right. Squeezed for every last
- 5:25drop of performance. And maybe faster charging
- 5:27finally. Rumors say maybe 60 watts for the S26
- 5:31Ultra. Not the 100 watts Xiaomi's doing, but
- 5:33still a decent bump for Samsung. We'll probably
- 5:35see that early next year. Okay, definitely one
- 5:37to watch. Alright, let's shift gears. From tiny,
- 5:41powerful chips to big platform safety concerns.
- 5:46Yeah, story number two is about Meta, Facebook,
- 5:49Messenger, Instagram. They're making some major
- 5:52moves globally regarding teen accounts. This
- 5:55sounds like a response to all the pressure and
- 5:57lawsuits they've been facing. No doubt. They're
- 5:59basically rolling out mandatory restricted teen
- 6:02accounts worldwide now for Facebook and Messenger.
- 6:05It mirrors what they already did on Instagram.
- 6:07And they say this already covers hundreds of
- 6:09millions of teens. That's the number. Yeah. So
- 6:12mandatory restricted. What does that actually
- 6:14mean for a teen user? It means the defaults are
- 6:17much tighter, especially for the younger group
- 6:19like 13 to 15 year olds. They now need explicit
- 6:22parent permission to change safety settings.
- 6:24So parents have to actively approve changes.
- 6:26It's not just suggested oversight. Right. It's
- 6:28built in. And the tools for parents are beefed
- 6:31up too. They can monitor screen time and importantly
- 6:34see who their kids are messaging. Plus they're
- 6:36using AI to try and catch kids who might be fibbing
- 6:39about their age to get around the restrictions.
- 6:41Okay, so it's a pretty comprehensive system they're
- 6:43putting in place. It feels like they're trying
- 6:45to get ahead of regulators. It's definitely par
- 6:48-compliance, part trying to genuinely manage
- 6:51a huge complex platform, but it's not just about
- 6:55individual accounts. They're also expanding their
- 6:57school program. Right, the Instagram School Partnership
- 7:00Program. You mentioned that's going to all U
- 7:02.S. middle and high schools now. All of them,
- 7:05which is significant. Why should, say, a busy
- 7:08school principal care about partnering with Instagram?
- 7:11Because it gives schools a dedicated, fast -track
- 7:14channel to report serious safety issues directly
- 7:17to Metta. Things like bullying, harassment. dangerous
- 7:21content. And Meta promises a faster review. They're
- 7:24aiming for review within 48 hours for reports
- 7:27coming through that channel. For a school dealing
- 7:29with an urgent issue, that quicker response time
- 7:32could be critical. Yeah, 48 hours is a big improvement
- 7:34over trying to navigate standard reporting tools.
- 7:37Exactly. They're also providing resources like
- 7:39an online SACE curriculum they develop with Child
- 7:42Help. It's free for parents and educators aiming
- 7:45to reach a million middle schoolers. So trying
- 7:47to build safety nets both technically through
- 7:50account restrictions and socially through education
- 7:53and school partnerships. It seems like a multi
- 7:55-pronged approach to show they're taking responsibility.
- 7:59It connects back in a way to the first story
- 8:01who controls the experience, the chip's local
- 8:04AI or the platform's global rules. Interesting
- 8:07parallel. All right, let's talk about control
- 8:09in a different arena. Music. Our third story
- 8:12is Spotify's fight against, well, AI generated
- 8:17music spam. Yeah, AI slump, as some are calling
- 8:20it. Spotify just announced three big updates
- 8:23to their AI policy to try and manage the flood
- 8:25of generated content and outright fraud. It feels
- 8:27like AI music exploded overnight. What's Spotify
- 8:30doing about it? Three things. Three main things.
- 8:32First is transparency. They're adopting an upcoming
- 8:34industry standard called DDEX for labeling AI
- 8:38in music credits. DDEX. OK, so this isn't just
- 8:40a simple AI yes -no tag. No, much more detailed.
- 8:43It allows labels to specify how AI was used.
- 8:46Was it AI -generated vocals, AI instruments,
- 8:49or just AI in the mixing process, that kind of
- 8:51granularity? That's actually a really useful
- 8:53context. Who signed on to use this? Already got
- 8:5515 labels and distributors, including big players
- 8:58like DistroKid and CD Baby. Good momentum there.
- 9:02Okay. Transparency is step one. What's step two?
- 9:04Dealing with the sheer volume. Exactly. They're
- 9:07rolling out a new, much more sophisticated spam
- 9:10filter. They said they removed over 75 million
- 9:12spam tracks last year alone. 75 million? That's
- 9:16insane. It really is. Shows the scale of the
- 9:18problem. This new filter targets specific tactics.
- 9:22Like what? Just mass uploads. That, but also...
- 9:25excessive duplicates, people trying to game search
- 9:28results with keywords, uploading tracks to the
- 9:30wrong artist's page. Ah, the profile mismatch
- 9:33thing. Yeah, and that classic trick. Uploading
- 9:35tons of tracks that are just over 30 seconds
- 9:37long. Right, because 30 seconds is the minimum
- 9:39to trigger a royalty payment. Precisely. So the
- 9:42filter aims to catch all that so real music discovery
- 9:45isn't drowned out. Makes sense. Okay, and the
- 9:49third measure. That tackles the deepfake voice
- 9:52issue. Yep. They're drawing a clear line. unauthorized
- 9:55AI, voice clones, deepfakes, vocal replicas basically,
- 10:00pretending to be an artist using AI without permission
- 10:03that's not allowed. Full stop. But if an artist
- 10:06wants to license their voice for an AI project,
- 10:09that's still okay. That's fine, as long as it's
- 10:12authorized by the artist. It's about consent
- 10:14and protecting the artist's identity and income.
- 10:17They're cracking down on impersonation. Got it.
- 10:19And Spotify is making it clear they aren't generating
- 10:22any of this stuff themselves, right? There were
- 10:23rumors. Yeah, they explicitly denied that. Yeah.
- 10:26No generating, owning, or uploading music by
- 10:28Spotify itself. Their focus is on being a platform
- 10:31for legitimate creators and stopping the fraud
- 10:34that hurts everyone. Okay, so a big push for
- 10:36authenticity and system integrity. It feels like
- 10:39a necessary move. Definitely. Okay, before we
- 10:41wrap this all up, we should thank our other partner
- 10:43for today's analysis. Absolutely. We also want
- 10:45to give a big thanks to Skoni. That's spelled
- 10:47S -K -O -N -I, pronounced Skoni. Premium golf
- 10:50shoes. Top tier stuff. If you need comfort, performance,
- 10:54and style out on the links, you need to check
- 10:55out Skoni. And guess what? Another code. Another
- 10:58code. Use SNARFUL, S -N -A -R -F -U -L at checkout
- 11:03on their site, scony .com, and you'll get 15
- 11:06% off your entire purchase. 15 % off Scomy Shoes.
- 11:10Very nice. Okay, so quick recap of the big themes
- 11:13from the Morningstar today. Alright, Qualcomm's
- 11:15new Snapdragon chip is bringing serious speed,
- 11:18especially for on -device AI, and even includes
- 11:20things like C2PA for photo verification. Huge
- 11:23potential there. Then Meta is going global with
- 11:26mandatory restricted teen accounts and expanding
- 11:28school partnerships, a major attempt to address
- 11:31safety concerns across Facebook, Messenger, and
- 11:34Instagram. And finally, Spotify is deploying
- 11:36a three -part strategy transparency via DDEX,
- 11:40a new spam filter, and a crackdown on voice clones
- 11:42to combat the rise of AI music frog and protect
- 11:46real artists. It really feels like the connecting
- 11:48thread this week is all about control and authenticity
- 11:51in the digital space, doesn't it? Yeah, verifying
- 11:53photos, managing platform access for safety,
- 11:55ensuring music royalties go to actual creators.
- 11:57It's all about trust and who's in charge of the
- 11:59data. And maybe the thought to leave you with
- 12:01today is... If these new chips, like the Snapdragon,
- 12:06are built for AI that thinks with you, instantly
- 12:08and personally, how do our slower, more deliberate
- 12:12human systems laws, platform rules like Meta's
- 12:15actually keep up? How do we balance that immediate
- 12:18personalized power with the need for thoughtful
- 12:21oversight? That is definitely the challenge.
- 12:23Lots to think about. Indeed. We're here to help
- 12:25at Snarfl, so reach out on our website if you
