- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarfl Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. All right, everyone. Welcome back to Connecting
- 0:18the Dots. It's Friday, March 21st. And as always,
- 0:23we're your colleagues here at Snarfl Solutions
- 0:24Group. That's right. And today is a deep dive
- 0:27day. Oh, yeah. We got some... Fascinating stories
- 0:30to get through. Some really interesting stuff.
- 0:33So, um, how don't you tell us what we're gonna
- 0:35be looking at today? Well, you know, we're gonna
- 0:37start off talking a bit about how we consume
- 0:40tech news and how that landscape is changing
- 0:42a little bit. Okay. And then, uh, we're gonna
- 0:45get into some artificial intelligence stuff,
- 0:47as always, that's really kind of heating up these
- 0:49days. Big topic. Um, then we're gonna get into
- 0:51something a little bit more mundane. But I think
- 0:53it's really interesting. It's, um... you know,
- 0:56the commercial services industry and how technology
- 0:59is really changing that up. Interesting. And
- 1:02then, of course, we'll get into, you know, some
- 1:04potential shifts in how the Internet is regulated.
- 1:07Right. As always. Always happening. Big topic.
- 1:10Yeah. And finally, we'll wrap up with some new
- 1:14ways to deal with those pesky bots online. I
- 1:17hate those things. Everybody does. OK, well,
- 1:19let's jump right in. Let's do it. So first up.
- 1:23We all need to stay up to date on tech news,
- 1:25right? So how about we talk about the way that
- 1:27we actually get that news? Absolutely. So Yahoo
- 1:30just announced that they're going to be selling
- 1:31TechCrunch. Oh, wow. Which is a pretty big deal,
- 1:34and they've been around for a while. It's a pretty
- 1:36well -known source for tech news. And they're
- 1:39selling it to an investment firm called Regent.
- 1:41OK. And what's interesting is that Regent already
- 1:44bought Foundry, which publishes PC World. Interesting.
- 1:48So what does all this mean for us? Well, I think
- 1:50what's fascinating here is that we're seeing
- 1:52a lot more of this media consolidation. OK. You
- 1:54know, where one investment firm owns multiple
- 1:57outlets. Right. And when a single firm owns two
- 2:00really big voices in the tech world, you have
- 2:03to wonder what kind of impact that's going to
- 2:05have on the kinds of stories that we see. That
- 2:08we see, exactly. You know, are we going to see
- 2:10kind of Okionlogic perspective from both those
- 2:12outlets? Are they going to maintain their unique
- 2:15voices? Interesting point. think about you know
- 2:18when you're listening to the radio and a few
- 2:20companies loon all these different stations right
- 2:22you kind of hear the same message you start to
- 2:24notice a pattern exactly yeah and you know even
- 2:27for you know, someone who's not a tech expert
- 2:30like myself, I do check in on these websites
- 2:32every now and then. Yeah. You know, just to see
- 2:34what the latest and greatest is or what's happening
- 2:36with these big tech giants. Sure. So, you know,
- 2:39this whole ownership thing, it definitely makes
- 2:40you think. Yeah, it's something to consider.
- 2:42For sure. Because even if it's not immediately
- 2:45obvious over time, you might start to see changes
- 2:48in the types of stories they're covering. Yeah.
- 2:50You know, maybe they focus more on certain areas
- 2:53that align with. the owner's interests or maybe
- 2:56their editorial stance on certain companies shifts,
- 2:59it's just a reminder that the media landscape
- 3:02is dynamic. It's constantly changing. And those
- 3:05changes in ownership can have a cuddle impact
- 3:07on what you read. Absolutely. Yeah. OK, so let's
- 3:10move on to something that I know a lot of people
- 3:12are talking about these days. AI. Yeah, it's
- 3:15everywhere you look these days. Seriously. It
- 3:17really is. So Wired recently published this really
- 3:19interesting report based on interviews with like
- 3:2350 people who work or used to work at Google.
- 3:26Interesting. And it talks about how Google has
- 3:28been working really hard over the past few years
- 3:31to keep up with OpenAI. Right, the company that
- 3:34created ChatGPT. Right, and it's a really fascinating
- 3:37look into how seriously these big companies are
- 3:40taking AI. Yeah, you know what stood out to me
- 3:43in that report was just the amount of pressure
- 3:45these tech giants are under to innovate quickly.
- 3:48It really sounds like Google felt like they needed
- 3:50to speed up their AI development. And they even
- 3:54made some changes like layoffs and maybe relaxing
- 3:57some of their internal review processes to get
- 4:00things moving faster. Really? Yeah. And if you
- 4:02think about how this impacts, you know, all those
- 4:05AI powered features that you're starting to see
- 4:07everywhere in search engines and other apps,
- 4:10they're all coming out of this really competitive
- 4:12environment. So basically every time we see a
- 4:14new AI tool or feature, it's probably because
- 4:17of this race to be the leader in AI. Exactly.
- 4:20But you made a really interesting point. Well,
- 4:22it makes you wonder, you know, when companies
- 4:24are moving this quickly, are they taking enough
- 4:27time to make sure that these systems are safe,
- 4:30reliable? that they're not gonna have unintended
- 4:33consequences. That's a great point. Yeah, because
- 4:35we're all excited about the potential of AI,
- 4:38but we also need to be mindful of how it's developed
- 4:41and implemented, because that's what ultimately
- 4:43impacts all of us. All right, so let's switch
- 4:45gears a little bit and talk about a part of the
- 4:47tech world that maybe doesn't get as much attention,
- 4:51but it's super important nonetheless. I'm intrigued.
- 4:54Okay, so there's this company called BuildOps,
- 4:56and they make software for companies that handle
- 4:58things like heating, air conditioning, plumbing.
- 5:01Okay so like the behind the scenes stuff. Exactly
- 5:03the essential services that we often take for
- 5:05granted. Right. And get this they just got a
- 5:08whopping a hundred and twenty seven million dollars
- 5:10in funding. Wow. which puts their value at a
- 5:13billion dollars. That's a lot of money. It is
- 5:15a lot of money. For HVAC software. Yeah, but
- 5:18it just goes to show that technology is impacting
- 5:20every industry. That's a good point. Even the
- 5:23ones that might seem a little bit traditional.
- 5:24Yeah, I mean, what's interesting here is that
- 5:26even these essential industries are being revolutionized
- 5:29by technology. Exactly. I mean, Build Top software
- 5:32helps these companies manage everything so much
- 5:34more efficiently, like scheduling their technicians,
- 5:37managing inventory handling, billing, all that
- 5:39stuff. Exactly. And when these companies can
- 5:40operate more efficiently, It means that we get
- 5:42better service. Right, exactly. I mean, think
- 5:44about it. If your office AC breaks down on a
- 5:47scorching summer day. I don't even want to think
- 5:49about that. Nobody does. Yeah. But if the maintenance
- 5:51company uses this kind of software, they can
- 5:53respond quicker and fix it faster. Right, because
- 5:56they know exactly who to send. Exactly. What
- 5:58parts they need. They're organized. So it's tech
- 6:00working behind the scenes to make our lives a
- 6:02little bit easier. Exactly. And I think it's
- 6:04a great example of how technology can have a
- 6:06tangible impact on our daily comfort, our convenience,
- 6:10even in areas we might not always think about.
- 6:12Absolutely. OK, let's move on to something that
- 6:14could have a huge impact on how we all interact
- 6:18online okay this sounds important it is so there
- 6:20are reports that senators Durbin and Graham okay
- 6:23they're planning to introduce a bill that would
- 6:25let section 230 expire in January of 2027 section
- 6:29230 now what is that again so it might sound
- 6:32like legal jargon it kind of does but it's basically
- 6:34a law that protects online platforms okay from
- 6:37being held responsible for what their users post
- 6:40oh I see So it's been a really big deal for the
- 6:42growth of social media sites, forums, all kinds
- 6:45of online communities? Right, because it lets
- 6:47them host a wide range of content without worrying
- 6:49too much about legal repercussions. Exactly.
- 6:52But if this protection goes away, it could change
- 6:54everything. I can see that. Yeah, I mean, imagine
- 6:56what would happen if platforms were suddenly
- 6:59liable for everything their users posted. Right.
- 7:01They might start cracking down on content. Exactly.
- 7:04They might have to become way more aggressive
- 7:06in moderating and removing stuff. Wow. So this
- 7:09could really change what we see online. Absolutely.
- 7:11It could impact everything from the kind of information
- 7:13we have access to, to the way we express ourselves.
- 7:16And how open those discussions can be. Exactly.
- 7:19And there are definitely arguments to be made
- 7:21on both sides. Right. On the one hand, you have
- 7:23this concern about harmful content and misinformation
- 7:26spreading online and maybe without section 230
- 7:30platforms would be more proactive in dealing
- 7:32with that. Right. But on the other hand, there's
- 7:33also this concern about censorship. Right. And
- 7:36the impact on free speech. Absolutely. If platforms
- 7:39become too afraid to let users post freely. It's
- 7:42a really complex issue. It is. With a lot of
- 7:45potential consequences. For sure. OK, so for
- 7:47our last story, let's talk about something pretty
- 7:49cool in the world of online security. All right.
- 7:52I'm always up for some good security news. So
- 7:54Cloudflare just announced something called AI
- 7:56Labyrinth. Okay. Which is basically using AI
- 7:59to fight AI. Whoa, using AI to fight AI? How
- 8:02does that work? So they're using AI to generate
- 8:04fake content. Okay. To confuse and slow down
- 8:07those annoying bots and crawlers. Oh, those things
- 8:10that ignore the rules about not crawling certain
- 8:12parts of the internet. Exactly. So it's like
- 8:14creating a digital obstacle course for the bad
- 8:16guys. Oh, that's kind of clever. Right. And it
- 8:18makes it much harder and more expensive for them
- 8:20to do their thing. So what's the benefit for
- 8:22us regular folks? Well, those bots and crawlers
- 8:25can really mess things up. online yeah they can
- 8:27slow down websites spread spam even try to steal
- 8:30our information exactly so by making it harder
- 8:32for them to operate Technologies like this make
- 8:35the internet a little bit cleaner. Right. A little
- 8:37bit safer for all of us. It's like a constant
- 8:39arms race. It really is. You know, the bad guys
- 8:41get more sophisticated with AI, so we have to
- 8:43develop new ways to defend ourselves. Exactly,
- 8:46and AI Labrith is a pretty interesting example
- 8:48of that. It really is, using the same technology
- 8:50that's being used for harm. Yeah. To create a
- 8:53more secure online experience. I like it. Me
- 8:55too. So that's a wrap for our deep dive today,
- 8:58March 21st. Wow, we covered a lot. We did. We
- 9:01talked about how the tech news landscape has
- 9:03changed. all the excitement around AI, and even
- 9:07how technology is impacting those essential services
- 9:09we rely on. And of course, those potential changes
- 9:12to internet regulation, and those new ways to
- 9:15combat bad bots. It's amazing how all these stories
- 9:18are connected. It is. And how they ultimately
- 9:20impact our daily lives. For sure. So we hope
- 9:22this deep dive helped you connect the dots and
