- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Good morning and welcome back to Connecting
- 0:17the Dots. I'm Alex. And I'm Morgan. Happy Friday,
- 0:20everyone. It is October 17th. 2025. It really
- 0:24is Friday. It feels good. We've got a lot happening
- 0:26in tech today, but let's quickly get everyone
- 0:28grounded first. Sounds good. Okay. Weather check
- 0:31here in Sacramento looking lovely, becoming sunny
- 0:34high around 72 degrees. Just a perfect fall day.
- 0:38Couldn't agree more, but nationally, if you're
- 0:40traveling, definitely keep an eye out. There's
- 0:42a pretty significant storm system moving across
- 0:45the central U .S. Yeah, heading towards the northeast.
- 0:48And the forecast mentions risks of severe thunderstorms,
- 0:51damaging winds, hail, even tornadoes and flash
- 0:54flooding, especially the Ozarks and the mid Mississippi
- 0:57River Valley for Saturday. So, yeah, please stay
- 1:00safe out there. Absolutely. All right. Quick
- 1:02market check. Let's do it. So heading into the
- 1:04weekend things were well relatively stable overall
- 1:06the Dow Jones had a decent day up about a hundred
- 1:09and thirty six points That's a point three zero
- 1:11percent and for the week it managed a small game
- 1:13Just over half a percent about point six six
- 1:15percent the S &P 500 though dipped a little bit
- 1:18today down Just four points point zero seven
- 1:20percent making it a slight loss for the week
- 1:22down about point two one percent pretty flat
- 1:25Really, but the real action or maybe roller coaster
- 1:28was Bitcoin. Oh, yeah Took a big tumble today,
- 1:31down almost $2 ,500. Ouch. And that means a pretty
- 1:35hefty weekly loss, too, over 8%. So definitely
- 1:38some volatility if you're in the crypto space.
- 1:41For sure. OK, before we dive into our main tech
- 1:43stories from the Morningstar Report, we want
- 1:45to give a shout out to a fantastic new sponsor.
- 1:48We do indeed. Perfect timing for holiday planning,
- 1:51actually. We're excited to welcome Old Glory.
- 1:53They're an iconic music and sports fan merch
- 1:56store. Seriously great stuff. If you've got that
- 1:58friend, you know the techie one who's also secretly
- 2:00obsessed with like 80s rock or their college
- 2:03football team Exactly old glory is your spot
- 2:06and they've got a great offer for our listeners
- 2:08use the promo code snarfle. That's s n a r f
- 2:12u l snarfle at checkout and you get 15 % off
- 2:15your entire purchase pretty sweet deal It is
- 2:17you can find them at old glory comm check them
- 2:19out Okay, great stuff there. Now let's get into
- 2:21it. We've got three really interesting stories
- 2:24today that I think show how we're interacting
- 2:27with technology is fundamentally shifting. Yeah,
- 2:30it feels like we're moving past the, wow, AI
- 2:32is cool phase into the, okay, how does this actually
- 2:35work day -to -day phase? Exactly. And that brings
- 2:38us straight to our first story and Fropec rolling
- 2:41out skills for Claude. Right. This is for their
- 2:44paid users, pro, max. team and enterprise tiers.
- 2:50So what are skills exactly? It's not just a gimmick.
- 2:52Anthropic describes them as these Folders basically
- 2:56folders packed with instructions, maybe some
- 2:58scripts other resources. It's like giving Claude
- 3:01a specific job manual That's a good way to put
- 3:03it like a cheat sheet for your AI co -worker
- 3:05So say you need it to analyze an Excel sheet
- 3:07a certain way every time or you know Make absolutely
- 3:10sure that every document it generates follows
- 3:12your company's really specific brand guidelines
- 3:15That kind of thing instead of writing this super
- 3:17long detailed prompt over and over again, which
- 3:19gets tedious fast Right, you just teach Claude
- 3:22the skill once, you load that skill, and boom,
- 3:26it knows exactly what to do in that specific
- 3:27context. And Tropic's product lead, Brad Abrams,
- 3:31apparently emphasized this point. It's not just
- 3:33about hitting general benchmarks, it's about
- 3:36making Claude useful for your specific job. Yeah,
- 3:39like maybe you need perfectly formatted PowerPoint
- 3:41slides about, I don't know, Haiku 4 .5's market
- 3:45performance. You build a skill for that. And
- 3:47the cool part is customization. You can build
- 3:50your own skills for your unique workflows. And
- 3:53they sync everywhere on the cloud website if
- 3:55you're using the API to plug it into other software
- 3:57or even with their agent SDK for developers.
- 4:01It feels very much like operationalizing AI,
- 4:04making it a reusable, scalable tool for businesses.
- 4:07Definitely. And it's interesting timing, isn't
- 4:09it? This comes right after OpenAI announced their
- 4:11agent kit. Right, which also has that goal of
- 4:13moving AI agents from just being a prototype
- 4:15to actually being used in production. Like that
- 4:18Albertson's example, using an agent to figure
- 4:20out why ice cream sales dipped. Yeah. So Anthropic
- 4:23Skills seems like their way of enabling that
- 4:25same kind of specific repeatable AI work for
- 4:29everyone using Claude. Right. It's less about
- 4:30the one -off chat, more about the embedded AI
- 4:33assistant. A fundamental shift. OK, let's move
- 4:36from AI specialization to, well, AI everywhere.
- 4:40Story number two is Microsoft's big push with
- 4:43Copilot in Windows 11. This is where, hey, Copilot
- 4:47comes in, the wake word is rolling out, and crucially,
- 4:51not just for those fancy new Copilot plus PCs.
- 4:53Right, they're bringing this voice interaction
- 4:55to all Windows 11 machines. Microsoft executive
- 4:58Yusuf Mehdi actually called voice the third input
- 5:02mechanism now. right alongside the keyboard and
- 5:04mouse. That's a bold statement. They're suggesting
- 5:06a major change in how you'll interact with your
- 5:08computer actually talking with it. Their logic
- 5:10is, well, we already spend billions of minutes
- 5:12talking through our PCs on Teams calls and stuff.
- 5:15And accessibility use cases like doctors using
- 5:17transcription. So they think talking to the PC
- 5:19isn't a huge leap. What enables this or makes
- 5:22it potentially useful is something called Copilot
- 5:25Vision. Okay, tell me about Vision. It's opt
- 5:26-in, right? Yes. Definitely opt in. But the idea
- 5:30is the AI can basically see what's on your screen
- 5:32and help you out. How so? Like coaching you?
- 5:35Yeah, exactly. Maybe you're stuck trying to use
- 5:37a feature in an app or troubleshooting a problem,
- 5:40or even learning moves in a game. Copilot could
- 5:43theoretically watch and guide you step by step.
- 5:46That sounds potentially helpful, especially for
- 5:49less tech savvy users. We have to bring it up.
- 5:53Cortana. Cortana. Microsoft tried this voice
- 5:56assistant thing about a decade ago, and it...
- 5:58Well, it didn't exactly take the world by storm.
- 6:00No, it didn't. It mostly got ignored or turned
- 6:03off. Microsoft's bet now is that the AI is finally
- 6:06smart enough to be genuinely useful, unlike Cortana
- 6:09back then. Okay, fair enough. But there's another
- 6:11elephant in the room. Trust. Especially after
- 6:14the whole Recall feature fiasco last year. Right.
- 6:17Recall caused a huge privacy backlash. Now, Copilot
- 6:21Vision needs to send your screen data to Microsoft's
- 6:23cloud to work. Even if it's opt -in, asking users
- 6:26to trust them with a live feed of their screen,
- 6:28that's a tough sell for many people, I imagine.
- 6:30It is. And they're pushing further with something
- 6:32called Copilot Actions, currently in preview
- 6:35in Copilot Labs. Actions so the AI can actually
- 6:38do stuff on your computer That's the idea like
- 6:40you could tell it to edit a whole folder of photos
- 6:42It runs locally in a secure environment supposedly
- 6:45supposedly But even Microsoft is hedging their
- 6:47bets a bit and exec warned that the agent might
- 6:50quote make some mistakes Initially which translates
- 6:54to maybe don't let it organize your critical
- 6:57work files just yet. Ah Probably wise advice
- 7:00so that the big picture is Windows 11 is being
- 7:03heavily marketed as the computer you can talk
- 7:06to, especially with Windows 10 support ending.
- 7:09They really want this to be the moment voice
- 7:11interaction finally clicks for the mainstream
- 7:13PC user. We'll see if trust follows the tech.
- 7:16Okay, quite a shift happening on the desktop.
- 7:18Now let's pivot to a massive shift in the media
- 7:20and sports landscape. Story three. Formula One
- 7:23is leaving linear TV in the U .S. This is huge.
- 7:27Starting in 2026, F1 has signed a five -year
- 7:29deal to move exclusively to Apple TV. Exclusively.
- 7:33So every practice session, qualifying, sprint
- 7:36race, the main Grand Prix, everything. All behind
- 7:39the Apple TV subscription paywall, which is currently,
- 7:41what, $12 .99 a month? Yep. And Apple paid a
- 7:44hefty price for this exclusivity, around $140
- 7:46million per year. Wow. That's a massive jump,
- 7:50like 56 % more than what ESPN was paying, which
- 7:52was already significant, around $85 -90 million.
- 7:56It really is. And you have to acknowledge, ESPN
- 7:58played a huge role in F1's boom here in the States.
- 8:01Viewership averaged like $1 .4 million in 2025.
- 8:03Absolutely. But F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali basically
- 8:07said it was time to look forward, betting on
- 8:09Apple's tech and, quote, social movement to keep
- 8:12that growth going. It's a gamble, though, isn't
- 8:14it? Trading the broad reach of ESPN for the walled
- 8:17garden of Apple TV. It is. But F1 seems convinced
- 8:20their key growth demographic supports it. Get
- 8:23this. 47 % of new US F1 fans surveyed are between
- 8:2718 and 24. Ah, OK. The digital native crowd.
- 8:31They're already used to paying for streaming
- 8:32services. That makes more sense. And Apple isn't
- 8:34just sticking races in the TV app. They plan
- 8:36to weave F1 into everything. Apple News, Maps,
- 8:39Music, Sports. even Fitness Plus screens. So
- 8:42it becomes part of the whole Apple ecosystem
- 8:44experience, not just a standalone broadcast.
- 8:46Right. Now, for the dedicated fans, there's actually
- 8:49some good news here regarding F1 TV Premium.
- 8:52Oh, yeah, that's the service with all the extra
- 8:54camera angles and data, right? Super popular
- 8:56with hardcore fans. Exactly. That service will
- 8:59continue, but instead of being a separate cost,
- 9:01it'll be included free with your Apple TV subscription.
- 9:04Oh, that's interesting. So unlike their MLS season
- 9:06pass, which is an extra fee on top of Apple TV.
- 9:10Correct. F1 TV Pro is bundled in. That's a pretty
- 9:13smart way to keep the existing fan base happy
- 9:15during the transition. And Apple will apparently
- 9:17make some races and all the practice sessions
- 9:20available for free within the Apple TV app too.
- 9:23Trying to maintain some broad exposure, yeah.
- 9:25It's a calculated risk, moving fully to streaming
- 9:27in 2026. A really fascinating platform play.
- 9:31It really is. Okay, that covers our three main
- 9:33stories, seeing AI get specialized, Windows get
- 9:36conversational, and F1 go all in on streaming.
- 9:38Yeah, lots of change packed in there. But before
- 9:41we wrap up with the key takeaways, one more thank
- 9:43you to our sponsors. Absolutely. We also want
- 9:45to thank Skoni, that's S -K -O -N -I, Skoni.
- 9:50They make premium golf shoes. If you're hitting
- 9:52the links and want that perfect mix of performance,
- 9:54style, and seriously good comfort, you should
- 9:56check them out. And just like with Old Glory,
- 9:58use our promo code SNARFL, SNARFL, at checkout.
- 10:01That'll get you 15 % off your entire purchase
- 10:04at skoni .com. Great shoes, great deal. Okay,
- 10:08so let's quickly recap the big themes from today's
- 10:10analysis. The thread connecting everything seems
- 10:13to be this move towards more specialized platform
- 10:16-centric experiences, right? I think so. First,
- 10:19you have Anthropic with Claude skills basically
- 10:21ditching the need for constant repetitive prompting.
- 10:25Yeah, letting you build a specialized AI co -worker
- 10:28tailored exactly to your needs. Efficiency and
- 10:31consistency are the goals there. Then you've
- 10:32got Microsoft pushing, hey, co -pilot. trying
- 10:35to make voice a primary way you interact with
- 10:37Windows, a huge behavioral shift they're betting
- 10:40on. But one that really hinges on users trusting
- 10:43the platform, especially with features like copilot
- 10:45vision scanning your screen. And finally, Formula
- 10:47One, making that massive leap away from traditional
- 10:50TV straight into the Apple ecosystem. Betting
- 10:54that their future audience is already there and
- 10:56that deep integration across Apple's platform
- 10:58is worth more than broadcast reach. So the big
- 11:02question this leaves you with as you navigate
- 11:04all this is probably something like this as Everything
- 11:07from how you work with AI to how you watch sports
- 11:11gets pulled into these increasingly specific
- 11:13powerful platforms How much control and maybe
- 11:17how much personal data are we actually willing
- 11:20to trade for that hyper personalized? Convenience
- 11:23they offer something to think about definitely
- 11:25something to chew on Okay, that's our look at
