- 0:09The air gets super still, almost too quiet.
- 0:11And then you hear it. A sound like 1000 jet engines
- 0:14mixed with a freight train. That's really, really angry.
- 0:17And here's the wildest part. Somewhere in that spinning
- 0:20monster of wind and chaos, there's a cow just flying
- 0:24through the air. A whole cow.
- 0:26Today we're answering the question How does nature take
- 0:29invisible air and turn it into a spinning column of doom that can
- 0:32pick up a 1000 LB farm animal and launch it like a furry
- 0:35missile? Stick around because this is

- 1:08I'm your host, Charlie, and today we're diving into a
- 1:11question about tornadoes that literally spins my head around.
- 1:15Get it spins because tornadoes. I'll see myself out.
- 1:21This awesome question comes from Jake in Nebraska, and Jake's got
- 1:25a pretty wild reason for asking. See, Jake was eating his
- 1:28spaghetti one night when he accidentally spun his forks so
- 1:32fast that the noodles flew off and stuck to the ceiling.
- 1:36His mum was not impressed, but Jake started wondering, if
- 1:40spinning spaghetti can launch noodles at the ceiling, what
- 1:43happens when the actual sky starts spinning?
- 1:45Can it launch cows? Spoiler alert, yes, yes it can.
- 1:49Mother Nature apparently woke up one day and said, You know what
- 1:53would be hilarious? Flying livestock.
- 1:57So what is a tornado? Well, imagine taking a giant
- 2:01invisible straw, the kind you'd need if you wanted to drink an
- 2:04entire swimming pool, sticking one end in a thundercloud and
- 2:08the other end on the ground, and then spinning that straw really,
- 2:12really fast. That's basically a tornado.
- 2:14It's a rapidly rotating column of air that reaches from a storm
- 2:18cloud all the way down to the ground.
- 2:22They can lift cars like they're made of cardboard, eat entire
- 2:25roofs into the next county, and basically redecorate your town
- 2:30in the worst possible way. It's like if a toddler had
- 2:33superpowers and decided to rearrange everything while
- 2:36everyone screamed. But here's the thing, they don't
- 2:39just pop out of nowhere. There's actual science behind
- 2:42how they form. OK, so how does a tornado
- 2:46actually start? Well, you need three main
- 2:49ingredients. Kind of like making a cake,
- 2:51except this cake is made of wind and chaos, tastes terrible, has
- 2:55a zero star rating on Yelp, and will literally destroy your
- 2:59kitchen. First, you need warm, moist air
- 3:03near the ground. Think of it like a hot air
- 3:05balloon. It wants to go up, up, up.
- 3:07It's got dreams. It's got ambitions.
- 3:10Second, you need cold, dry air higher up in the atmosphere.
- 3:13This air is heavier and denser. Like that friend who always
- 3:16wants to stay on the couch watching TV and eating chips.
- 3:19It doesn't want to move. Third, you need something called
- 3:24wind shear. That's when the wind is blowing
- 3:27in different directions at different heights.
- 3:29The air gets confused, like when your teacher gives you homework
- 3:33and then immediately says it's optional.
- 3:35Wait, what? The air doesn't know what to do,
- 3:37so it starts spinning. It's having an existential
- 3:40crisis, and that crisis is about to become everyone else's
- 3:43problem. When these three things come
- 3:46together, the warm air shoots up into the cold air really fast,
- 3:51creating strong updrafts. Then inside the storm, those
- 3:54updrafts can tilt that horizontal spin upright.
- 3:58Suddenly you've got a vertical column of spinning air, and
- 4:01that's when things start getting serious.
- 4:03The air just got a promotion from lying around to standing up
- 4:06and causing problems. This spinning vortex can be
- 4:11several kilometres wide inside the cloud before it ever touches
- 4:15the ground. It's brewing up there, getting
- 4:18ready, like a villain in a movie who's planning their dramatic
- 4:21entrance. You can almost hear it up there
- 4:24going wait for it, wait for it. OK, now bam, tornado time.
- 4:30And then it happens. Touchdown.
- 4:32Not the football kind, although tornadoes do tend to move like
- 4:36they're trying to score points against humanity.
- 4:38When that rotating column of air finally reaches the ground, a
- 4:41tornado officially forms. It appears as a classic funnel
- 4:45cloud, like what you see in movies and nightmares.
- 4:48Sometimes it picks up dust, leaves, and debris, making it
- 4:52visible and giving it that classic dark, swirling look.
- 4:56And sometimes, and this is the really scary part, it stays
- 4:59almost invisible until it starts picking up stuff, so you don't
- 5:02even know it's there until your garden gnome flies past your
- 5:06window. Can move in really weird ways
- 5:10too. Some travel in straight lines,
- 5:11like they've got GPS and know exactly where they're going.
- 5:14Other zigzag around like they can't decide which house looks
- 5:17most fun to destroy. They often follow paths of least
- 5:20resistance, which is a fancy way of saying they're lazy and don't
- 5:23want to work too hard. Honestly, relatable.
- 5:26Here's something cool. Not all tornadoes look the same.
- 5:30You've got rope tornadoes, which are thin and twisty, like a
- 5:34piece of spaghetti that's alive and angry.
- 5:36Then there are cone tornadoes, which are wider at the bottom,
- 5:40like an ice cream cone, except instead of ice cream it's pure
- 5:43chaos. Wedge tornadoes are the really
- 5:47scary ones. They're extremely wide,
- 5:49sometimes more than a mile across.
- 5:51If you see one of these, it's basically nature's way of saying
- 5:54I'm not even trying to be subtle anymore, I'm just a giant wall
- 5:58of spinning death. And then there are multi vortex
- 6:01tornadoes. These have smaller mini
- 6:03tornadoes spinning around the main funnel, like the main
- 6:06tornado brought its friends to the destruction party.
- 6:10So how strong are these things? Meteorologists measure tornado
- 6:14strength using the Enhanced Fujita scale.
- 6:17It goes from EF0 to EF5. Kind of like levels in a video
- 6:21game, except you really don't want to reach level 5.
- 6:24There's no final boss, there's just destruction and regret.
- 6:29EF0 and EF1 tornadoes cause minor damage, like breaking tree
- 6:34branches. EF2 and EF3 can tear roofs off
- 6:38houses and flip cars like pancakes.
- 6:41If a tornado is flipping cars, it's having a really bad day and
- 6:44wants everyone else to as well. EF4 and EF5 tornadoes have wind
- 6:49speeds over 300 kilometres per hour and can level entire
- 6:53neighborhoods. They're basically nature's
- 6:56eraser. OK, here's the big question.
- 7:00What's it actually like inside a tornado?
- 7:03Now, no human has ever deliberately gone inside a
- 7:06tornado. Because that would be Let me
- 7:09check my notes. Ah yes, completely bonkers.
- 7:12Like that would be the worst decision since someone decided
- 7:15to put raisins in cookies and ruin perfectly good desserts.
- 7:20But scientists have studied them using radar, drones and ground
- 7:23sensors. First, the wind rotates at crazy
- 7:26high speeds and can lift basically anything off the
- 7:29ground. Cars, roofs, trees, cows.
- 7:32Yes, actual cows. Those 1000 LB animals that spend
- 7:35most of their time just standing there eating grass.
- 7:37They can become airborne. Mother Nature looked at cows one
- 7:40day and went, you know what these need?
- 7:42Flight. Second, the sound survivors
- 7:47describe it as absolutely bone chilling.
- 7:49It's been compared to a freight train, a jet engine, or a giant
- 7:53waterfall. Imagine the loudest sound you've
- 7:55ever heard, then multiply it by 100.
- 7:58Your eardrums are like Nope, this is not in my job
- 8:01description. I'm out. 3rd the darkness.
- 8:05Even if it's 2:00 PM on a sunny Tuesday, the inside of a tornado
- 8:09is nearly pitch black because of all the swirling debris.
- 8:13So not only are you being spun around at ridiculous speeds, you
- 8:16can't even see where you're going.
- 8:18It's like the world's worst carnival ride.
- 8:21No safety bar, no height requirement, just pure chaos and
- 8:24darkness. And no, unlike hurricanes which
- 8:28have a karma in the middle, tornadoes rarely have a calm
- 8:32centre. For all practical purposes, the
- 8:34inside of a tornado is chaos, danger and constant motion.
- 8:38It's basically like being inside a blender but the blender is
- 8:41also screaming at you and also the blender is the size of a
- 8:45small town. Zero stars would not recommend.
- 8:50So how do scientists study these things?
- 8:52Well, there are storm chasers who literally follow storms to
- 8:55observe tornadoes. It's like being a wildlife
- 8:58photographer, except the wildlife is a spinning column of
- 9:01air that wants to destroy everything.
- 9:03There's also Doppler radar that can detect wind patterns before
- 9:07a tornado even touches down. And scientists send drones into
- 9:12storms. Imagine being a drone and your
- 9:14owner is like, hey, want to fly into a tornado?
- 9:17The drone is probably like, I was supposed to film a wedding
- 9:20next week. But Nope, into the tornado.
- 9:23You go for science. Now where do tornadoes actually
- 9:28happen? the United States is basically
- 9:30tornado central, especially an area called Tornado Alley.
- 9:35This includes parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska.
- 9:40And here's a wild fact. Even Mars has dust tornadoes.
- 9:44They're much weaker than Earth's tornadoes, but still, spinning
- 9:47air happens anywhere there's an atmosphere.
- 9:49Maybe one day we'll have Martian storm chasers.
- 9:52How cool would that be? Can we stop tornadoes?
- 9:57Sadly, no. Even if we had every fan on
- 10:00Earth pointed at a tornado, it wouldn't make a dent.
- 10:02We just have a tornado with a nice breeze behind it.
- 10:05But the good news is we're getting much better at
- 10:08predicting tornadoes. Meteorologists can warn people
- 10:12ours in advance. Knowledge and preparation are
- 10:15our best tools. But wait, we're not done yet.

- 11:28The answer is B thin and twisty. And no, tornadoes definitely do
- 11:32not respect geometry. They didn't study for the
- 11:35geometry test their chaos in physical form.
- 11:39Question three. Do tornadoes have a calm centre
- 11:43like hurricanes do? Is it A yes, always B yes, but
- 11:49only very rarely in large tornadoes.
- 11:51Or C No, they're chaotic all the way through.
- 12:01The answer is B yes, but only very rarely in large tornadoes.
- 12:05Most tornadoes are chaotic throughout, just pure spinning
- 12:09madness. But don't count on it.
- 12:12If you're in a tornado, it's not calm anywhere.
- 12:14There's no calm, there's no chill, There's just wind and
- 12:18regret. How did you do?
