- 0:00Mark Chapter 7. The Pharisees and some of the
- 0:03scribes gathered around him when they had come from Jerusalem and
- 0:06had seen that some of his disciples were eating their
- 0:09bread with impure hands. That is unwashed, for the
- 0:12Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they carefully
- 0:15wash their hands, thus observing the traditions of the elders.
- 0:20And when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat
- 0:22unless they cleanse themselves. And there are many other things
- 0:25which they have received in order to observe, such as the
- 0:27washing of cups and pitchers and copper pots.
- 0:31The Pharisees and the scribes asked him, Why do your disciples
- 0:34not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat
- 0:37their bread within pure hands? And he said to them Rightly did
- 0:41Isaiah prophecy of you hypocrites as it is written.
- 0:44This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far
- 0:47away from me. But in vain do they worship me.
- 0:50Teaching his doctrines, the precepts of men, neglecting the
- 0:54commandment of God. You hold to the tradition of
- 0:57men. He was also saying to them, you
- 1:00are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to
- 1:04keep your tradition. For Moses said honor your father
- 1:08and your mother, and he who speaks evil of father or mother
- 1:11is to be put to death. But you say, if a man says to
- 1:14his father or his mother, whatever I have, that would help
- 1:17you, is Corban, that is to say, given to God, you no longer
- 1:21permit him to do anything for his father or his mother, thus
- 1:25invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have
- 1:28handed down. And you do many things such as
- 1:30that. After he called the crowd to him
- 1:33again, he began saying to them, Listen to me, all of you, and
- 1:36understand there is nothing outside the man which can defile
- 1:40him if it goes into him. But the things which proceed out
- 1:44of the man are what defile the man.
- 1:47If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.
- 1:50When he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples
- 1:53questioned him about the parable, and he said to them,
- 1:56Are you so lacking in understanding?
- 1:58Also, do you not understand that whatever goes into the man from
- 2:02outside cannot defile him, because it does not go into his
- 2:05heart but into his stomach, and is eliminated?
- 2:08Thus he declared all foods clean, and he was saying that
- 2:12which proceeds out of the man. That is what defiles the man,
- 2:16for from within, out of the heart of men, precede the evil
- 2:19thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of
- 2:23coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy,
- 2:27slander, pride and foolishness. All these evil things proceed
- 2:31from within and defile the man. Jesus got up and went away from
- 2:35there to the region of Tyre. When he had entered a house, he
- 2:38wanted no one to know of it, yet he could not escape notice.
- 2:42But after hearing of him, a woman whose little daughter had
- 2:44an unclean spirit immediately came and fell at his feet.
- 2:48Now the woman was a Gentile of the Sarah Phoenician race, and
- 2:52she kept asking him to cast the demon out of her daughter.
- 2:55And he was saying to her, Let the children be satisfied first,
- 2:59for it is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to
- 3:01the dogs. But she answered and said to
- 3:04him, Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table feed on the
- 3:07children's crumbs. And he said to her, because of
- 3:10this answer, go, the demon has gone out of your daughter.
- 3:14And going back to her home, she found the child lying on the
- 3:16bed. The demon having left again, he
- 3:20went out from the region of Tyre and came through Sidon to the
- 3:22Sea of Galilee within the region of Decapolis.
- 3:26They brought to him one who was deaf and spoke with difficulty,
- 3:29and they implored him to lay his hand on him.
- 3:32Jesus took him aside from the crowd by himself, and put his
- 3:35fingers in his into his ears. And after spitting, he touched
- 3:38his tongue with the saliva, and looking up to heaven, with a
- 3:42deep sigh he said to him, EF fatha, that is be opened, And
- 3:48his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was
- 3:51removed. And he began speaking plainly.
- 3:54And he gave them orders not to tell anyone.
- 3:56But the more he ordered them, the more widely they continued
- 4:00to proclaim it. They were utterly astonished,
- 4:03saying He has done all things well.
- 4:06He makes even the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.
