- 0:30Let's dive into God's. Word together
- 0:44In Acts Chapter 7 we see Stephen, who we met in the
- 0:47previous chapter, standing before the council and giving a
- 0:50defense. Remember, he was brought there
- 0:52because men were secretly paid off to bring charges against him
- 0:55because they were unable to cope with the wisdom from the Holy
- 0:57Spirit with which he spoke. And now he stands to make his
- 1:00defense. Now, I don't know how many
- 1:02courtroom defenses you've heard, but I can just about guarantee
- 1:06you've never heard one. Like Stevens, Stephen makes no
- 1:09apology, nor does he dispute the claims of his accusers.
- 1:12No, Stephen, over the course of about 52 verses in Acts Chapter
- 1:167, expounds the history of the Jewish people in the Old
- 1:19Testament. He walks through the Bible, from
- 1:21Abraham to the prophets, describing how God had
- 1:24established and preserved his people.
- 1:27His message culminates by discussing the building of
- 1:29Solomon's temple and telling the council that God does not dwell
- 1:32in houses made by human hands. He reminds them of the words of
- 1:36Isaiah, saying heaven is my throne and earth is the
- 1:39footstool of my. Feet what?
- 1:40Kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord.
- 1:43Or what place is there for my repose?
- 1:46Was it not my hand which made all these things?
- 1:49And then it gets real. In his spirit filled scripture
- 1:52rich defense, Stephen makes his own accusation.
- 1:55Listen to what He says. You men who are stiff necked and
- 1:59uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy
- 2:02Spirit. You're doing just as your
- 2:04Father's did. Which one of the prophets did
- 2:06your father's not persecute? They killed those who had
- 2:09previously announced the coming of the righteous One whose
- 2:12betrayers and murderers you have now become.
- 2:15You who received the Law as ordained by angels and yet did
- 2:19not keep it. The very prophets that God
- 2:21provided to bring His truth to Israel were killed by the Jewish
- 2:24people, even by their religious leaders.
- 2:27And Stephen says that this generation is doing the very
- 2:30same thing. They're killing the messengers
- 2:33of God, in particular the Son of God himself, Jesus Christ.
- 2:37In essence, Stephen is using this platform and opportunity
- 2:41not to defend himself, but to proclaim the truth of the
- 2:44gospel, to lay out the truth that Jesus is the Messiah, that
- 2:48he is the way that man may dwell with God.
- 2:51Needless to say, the Council does not love this last part of
- 2:54Stephen's defense. The text says they are cut to
- 2:57the quick, that they began gnashing their teeth at him.
- 3:00Stephen is unfazed though. He looks up to heaven and sees
- 3:03the glory of God and sees Jesus standing at the right hand of
- 3:06God. The people rushed at Stephen,
- 3:08driving him out of the city and eventually stoning him to death.
- 3:12Listen to the last two verses of this chapter as Stephen is being
- 3:15killed. They went on stoning Stephen as
- 3:17he called on the Lord and said, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
- 3:22Then falling on his knees, he cried out with a loud voice.
- 3:25Lord, do not hold this sin against them.
- 3:28Having said this, he fell asleep.
- 3:30We know Stephen is the first Christian martyr.
- 3:33He's the first to give his life for the sake of the gospel after
- 3:36Jesus death and resurrection. And his death and those of the
- 3:39many martyrs that would come after him is unlike most
- 3:42executions. He's not filled with anger or
- 3:45malice or rage. No, he's filled with
- 3:47forgiveness, with compassion for his accusers and executioners.
- 3:52He's filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 3:54And in that way, even in his death, he models his master,
- 3:57even essentially directly quoting Jesus as he's breathing
- 4:00his last. The Gospel is altogether
- 4:02different. This is not mere religion, no
- 4:05mere set of beliefs, no mere message.
- 4:08This gospel, and the power of the Holy Spirit that accompanies
- 4:11it, is powerful to both cut unrepentant men to the quick and
- 4:16induce murderous rage, and it is powerful to grant supernatural
- 4:19courage and peace to a man under threat of imminent death.
- 4:23This gospel is powerful, and if you will receive it, it is
- 4:27powerful to change you from the inside out, just like it did for
- 4:30Stephen.
