- 0:20Hey guys, and welcome back to another episode of Aligned and
- 0:24Thriving for Teachers, where we're gonna give real talk, but
- 0:28whoever's really gonna listen. So you know the saying you can't
- 0:33pour from an empty cup? Well, I've told you many times
- 0:36that it's 100% true. But here's the thing.
- 0:41Filling your cup is not just about food or drink.
- 0:45Real nourishment is about how you care for your entire self,
- 0:49your body, your mind and your spirit.
- 0:53That's your whole being. And today I want to dive into
- 0:57what nourishment really means beyond your usual diet talk and
- 1:02what you can do to build some simple, realistic habits that
- 1:06help you feel balanced, energised and joyful even when
- 1:10life is busy. So let's define what nourishment
- 1:14looks like beyond the food aspect of things.
- 1:17When most of you hear the word nourishment, you think about
- 1:20meal plans or dieting, maybe those really gross green kale
- 1:24smoothies or counting your macros.
- 1:27But honestly, nourishment is so much bigger than that.
- 1:31For me, nourishment means listening to my whole body and
- 1:35mind. It means giving myself what I
- 1:38need to feel grounded, calm and strong, not just fueled.
- 1:45One huge part of this is releasing tension.
- 1:49So I get a massage once a month. Not because it feels luxurious,
- 1:53which it definitely does, but because our bodies hold stress
- 1:57in tight places. Places especially, like your
- 2:01shoulders, your neck, your lower back.
- 2:04For me, I think like my, I'm trying to think mostly my
- 2:10shoulders and my lower back, but if you've ever felt like your
- 2:12shoulders are like permanently up near your ears, then you'd
- 2:15get it. Those knots are literally just
- 2:18holding stress, those tight muscles.
- 2:21It affects your mood, your sleep and your energy.
- 2:26For me, that monthly massage is like hitting a complete reset
- 2:30button. And I'm not saying that it's an
- 2:32enjoyable one either. Like it is a proper full blown
- 2:36get in there type of massage. My masseuse is absolutely
- 2:39amazing. She's got many, many
- 2:42qualifications to the point that I think I had an issue with my
- 2:46hand and I ended up with dry needling.
- 2:49So I had needles in my hand. I've had cupping, I've had
- 2:51everything. She just does a bit of a, a body
- 2:54scan when you walk in and you do some stretches and then you
- 2:58places like I didn't even realise were sore.
- 3:00And she's like, oh, no, you're crooked or you're this.
- 3:03And I remember laying on the bed one time and she's like, do you
- 3:06think you're straight? Like, yeah, I'm, I'm laying
- 3:09straight. She's like, no, mate.
- 3:11And then when she actually like lifted and manipulated my legs
- 3:14to straighten me up, I felt so crooked.
- 3:16And she's like, no, your back is twisted AF.
- 3:20I'm like, oh right. So yes, you need to find
- 3:24yourself. And I'm not saying go to walk in
- 3:28type of ones. If that's all you can get, then
- 3:30yes. But if you can find yourself an
- 3:32actual solid masseuse that actually can, it's not a
- 3:36relaxation massage, it's a proper massage.
- 3:39You'll actually feel better for it.
- 3:40Painful probably while you're there, but amazing when you've
- 3:43released all that tension afterwards.
- 3:46So that's a big one for me and I've locked in and I don't ever
- 3:48miss it because it's important. I mean, I play sport too, so
- 3:52there's lots of sport injury soreness and gym.
- 3:54I do Pilates every morning so I've got lots of sore spots from
- 3:57that too. So it all gets all the kinks out
- 4:00and all the tension. So movement, movement is another
- 4:03biggie. I used to be showing my age now.
- 4:07I used to be a mad Crossfitter, like high intensity all in every
- 4:12session. I was at the gym every morning,
- 4:14I was flat out, I was lifting like ridiculously heavy weights
- 4:20above my head and snatching and stuff.
- 4:22I remember breaking my foot at one point and I was in a moon
- 4:24boot and I was still going to the gym and doing pull ups and
- 4:27all of the things. There's photos of it somewhere,
- 4:30but it left me feeling a bit wired every day.
- 4:33And sometimes I would get really overwhelmed emotionally and I
- 4:38just thought that was getting hyped up, like getting that
- 4:40fixed from the gym and thought yes, yes, yes.
- 4:42Which is for some people. But for me, I really found that
- 4:46my nervous system was just always in that constant revved
- 4:48up state, which was not serving me well.
- 4:50So over time, like you will find what works for you.
- 4:53But now I do Pilates in the morning.
- 4:56I'm still challenging my body and it's effective because it's
- 4:59calming. It's rather than spiking my
- 5:02stress and my nervous system levels, like it's actually quite
- 5:05calming. And that for me is the key.
- 5:07You've got to find what works for you.
- 5:08You might really enjoy going for a morning run because that works
- 5:12for your nervous system, or a really nice walk with just some
- 5:15little inclines up and down, up and down, looking at the
- 5:18beautiful scenery. Like you've got to find what
- 5:19works for you. But for me, I love being able to
- 5:22get up in the morning, go do my Pilates workout, know that I've
- 5:25worked on my body, then I work on my mind, then I work on
- 5:29getting ready for the day, and so on and so forth.
- 5:31So you find what works for you. So if you love heavy weights or
- 5:34yoga or long walks, the goal is just to get some movement that
- 5:37serves your body and your mind instead of draining you.
- 5:41OK, mindset is then the final piece of that whole nourishment
- 5:45puzzle. So if you've been following
- 5:47myself Care series, you know that mindset is everything.
- 5:51I spend lots of time reading books, listening to podcasts
- 5:53that inspire me to grow and be better.
- 5:56Not to be perfect, but to be my absolute best self.
- 6:01So what you feed your brain is just as important as what you
- 6:04feed your body. And of course, rest and joy.
- 6:08You can't forget about that. I actually have to plan rest,
- 6:11like I physically put it on my calendar like a meeting because
- 6:15without it, like I'd run on empty really fast and make sure
- 6:18that you plan to have some fun. And, and did you not get this
- 6:21message that I'm a planner? So yes, my life has to be
- 6:24planned like that. I'm not good with spontaneous
- 6:26fun. Just ask my friends and family.
- 6:29So I have to plan for that. But, and that's what that looks
- 6:31like for me, because life has to feel good and nourishment means
- 6:35to me it means balance. So nourishment, when you're
- 6:40doing it right, it changes everything.
- 6:42When I really started putting my own health first, everything
- 6:48else shifted. My confidence grew, my stress
- 6:51went down. I just honestly felt better in
- 6:54all areas of my life, at work, with my family and just how I
- 6:59showed up for myself. I've worked in school where the
- 7:03culture was really heavy around drinking.
- 7:06OK I'm just going to be honest. Like Friday nights, weekends,
- 7:09social events. And I probably did that too once
- 7:12or twice but honestly I now can't remember the last time I
- 7:15had a proper drink. These days my treat is legit a
- 7:19no sugar coke and I'm genuinely happy with that decision.
- 7:23You don't need alcohol to be brave or to unwind.
- 7:28You just need to show yourself a little courage, and sometimes
- 7:31that's as simple as choosing a different path.
- 7:35So I'm not saying no to drink ever in the rest of my life.
- 7:38Like, yes, if someone's going to offer me a glass of champagne
- 7:41and it's a wedding, I will probably have a glass of
- 7:43champagne. But my mindset and all the
- 7:46changes I've done over the last 12 to 18 months, I've really
- 7:50sort of seen what to me, and this is not to you, but to me,
- 7:55I'm like, what is the point? Yes, I can understand certain
- 7:59things for celebrations and of course you know those events
- 8:03where everything is free and you just go oh woo Hoo.
- 8:06But even now I'm like, but why? What is this doing to my body?
- 8:09What is this doing to my insides?
- 8:11Do I really need this? Like that is more my mentality.
- 8:14And honestly, I don't mind now that I'm only joking, my age,
- 8:18feeling a bit older, that driving is not a real issue to
- 8:21me as long as there's people being nice and still talking to
- 8:24me and keeping me entertained. And I'm not out way too late
- 8:28because it is harder to stay awake when you don't have that
- 8:31in your system. You don't seem to be as
- 8:34invincible. I think so, yeah.
- 8:37But it's just choosing something different.
- 8:40I think part of that change for me, it came from, I've started
- 8:43doing like a monthly detox and switching up my vitamins and my
- 8:47water. I know this is not a salesy
- 8:50thing, but these shifts have literally healed me from the
- 8:54inside out. And if you want to know more
- 8:56about what I did in relation to my vitamins, my water, all of
- 8:59those things, please message me. I've got lots of info and I'm
- 9:03happy to help guide you in the right direction.
- 9:05But only if you're ready 'cause it was a massive shift for me to
- 9:09the point that obviously I lost a lot of weight in a healthy,
- 9:13again, in a very healthy way. And it's maintainable.
- 9:17My eating habits are maintainable because I am
- 9:19focused on nourishing my body in every way, shape and form.
- 9:23And this is just like one part of it.
- 9:26So I'm working on my mindset and my healthy version of me because
- 9:30I want to live a happy, healthy life and I'm not getting sick at
- 9:34work and catching all of the bugs from all of the students.
- 9:37So it's just a win win for everyone really all around.
- 9:41But I get it. We want simple, realistic
- 9:45nourishment strategies. I get that life is busy.
- 9:47My life is hectic sometimes and if I don't factor some of these
- 9:51things in it, it won't happen. So if nourishment feels like
- 9:56it's another giant To Do List, you're not gonna stick with it.
- 10:00Let's just be honest. So you need some simple,
- 10:04realistic ways to nourish yourself.
- 10:07So this is how I nourish myself and it might work for you too.
- 10:11But I'll give you some ideas and then we can sort of talk more if
- 10:15you want to. But as I said, I do a monthly
- 10:18detox which goes for about 10 days to reset my body and my
- 10:21mind. It clears out all the clutter
- 10:24and it helps me feel fresh. And if you want the details
- 10:27about that, just ask me. I don't do it every month
- 10:29anymore. I sort of did it solidly for
- 10:30about 8 months and now I just do it sort of when I need it.
- 10:34So it's about every three months I join back in and do another 10
- 10:36days and just reset. And the kids and hubby like they
- 10:40have to have some of those meals too.
- 10:41And it's not, it's not bad for them, let's be honest.
- 10:44Like eating whole nourishable, like nourishing foods, not an
- 10:48issue. Let's just feed all the veggies.
- 10:51I focus a lot now. So that's, that's one.
- 10:53So monthly detox 2 protein, protein, protein.
- 10:57And Yep, if you're one of these gym people, you've probably
- 11:00heard all about it. But I focus on protein in my
- 11:03meals because that helps to keep my energy steady and it stops
- 11:07those mid afternoon slumps. And from working on my health
- 11:12journey over the last 12 to 8 months, that's been a big
- 11:15learning curve for me that I realised I probably was not
- 11:17eating enough protein in my day. I, I don't know why I thought
- 11:21the way I did, but I just, I guess I just assumed that you
- 11:24couldn't eat like that or that much food, but you can when
- 11:27you're eating the right types of food.
- 11:29But I just aimed on upping my protein because now I get to the
- 11:31end of the night and I'm not going to the fridge and eating
- 11:33an entire block of chocolate. And yes, I have been guilty of
- 11:36that multiple times because chocolate is still gluten free
- 11:40in certain cases. So yeah, I have probably still
- 11:44had that. But now my guilty pleasure is
- 11:47like a hot cacao or there's a really good protein custard that
- 11:52I have. So that's now my go to instead
- 11:56another one. So water is huge for me.
- 12:00Not just any water though. I pay attention to the quality
- 12:03of my water and I have a very specific type of water and I
- 12:07think it makes a difference in how I feel every single day.
- 12:09And if you want information about that, like DM me, talk to
- 12:11me about that. But water, water, water, 2
- 12:14litres a day or more, even better.
- 12:16I've tried to get to 3 but that's really hard in teacher
- 12:19life when you really need to pee all the time.
- 12:22So yeah, but water, vitamins. I don't actually know how anyone
- 12:27is going on with life without taking vitamins at this point in
- 12:30time. Like when I meet people I'm
- 12:31like, oh you, you don't take vitamins, what are you doing?
- 12:34Like what? How is your health looking?
- 12:36What are your blood results like?
- 12:38I would like to see your insides.
- 12:40That sounds really creepy. Sorry, but that's, that's all
- 12:44those little things that go through your head.
- 12:45So I take a specific set of vitamins that support my health
- 12:50in ways that I honestly didn't even expect.
- 12:52And again, talk to me more like DME if you want to hear about
- 12:56those, but they're very like their absolute whole food,
- 12:59amazing goodness. It helps me in more ways than
- 13:02one. As I said before, I'm a Dutch
- 13:03person, so I've suffered from lots of skin conditions like
- 13:07eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis. We get like a whole trifecta.
- 13:11We get every type of skin condition imaginable.
- 13:13And I would literally look like it was snowing from my head.
- 13:17The amount of stuff that was through my hair, especially when
- 13:20my stress levels were high, it was like the psoriasis in my
- 13:24hair would multiply. And then it would like just not
- 13:28a pretty sight. Like wearing a black cardigan
- 13:30did not work for me in those times.
- 13:32So I've come a long way in the last 12 months.
- 13:36So that is no longer a big issue.
- 13:38Like instead of being a full blown snowstorm, it's probably
- 13:41just a little flake here and there, which is quite normal
- 13:44nowadays. So blessings in disguise and
- 13:47movement. Movement that fits your life
- 13:50now. Not every day has to be that
- 13:52hard. Solid workout but even just 10
- 13:54minutes counts. Find what feels good, not what
- 13:57you think you should do. You need to do what works for
- 13:59you, otherwise you're not going to stick to it.
- 14:00Let's just be honest. I know I only stick to my
- 14:03routine now because I thoroughly enjoy it and I still play
- 14:07sports. So yes.
- 14:07I do Pilates like 6 mornings a week and I have one morning off
- 14:11to have a bit of a stretch and rest day.
- 14:14I do do hockey training one night a week and play a game one
- 14:18game or two on the weekends. So I am actually doing some
- 14:21solid running activity because I don't know about you.
- 14:23I'm not. I say I'm not a runner, I run on
- 14:26the field. I'm not a runner without
- 14:28motivation. So you will see me running on
- 14:31the side of the highway. If I'm running for a time trial
- 14:34or if there is a competition involved, you will not see me
- 14:38running for pleasure because to me running is not enjoyable.
- 14:40I'll happily walk for hours, but running, I don't know, I just
- 14:44can't. But on the field it's different
- 14:46because I'm very competitive. So that's a whole different
- 14:48mindset. So there you go.
- 14:50I'll happily run to get a ball, but not for any reason.
- 14:54So yes, if you do see me running, it is because I'm
- 14:56probably running from something. Yeah, and.
- 14:59And your mindset. So mindset fuel.
- 15:01Instead of mindlessly scrolling. OK, I swap in 10 minutes of a
- 15:05podcast or reading something inspiring.
- 15:07It's just those small habits, but they have a massive, massive
- 15:10impact. You can get tonnes of apps where
- 15:13you can just listen to books. You don't have to sit and read
- 15:15them anymore. You can just have your headset,
- 15:17your headset, your Earpods or whatever in your ears while
- 15:20you're doing the washing. Like that's what I do.
- 15:22If I'm doing mom jobs, kids are watching TV or they're doing
- 15:25something outside, then I'm, oh, I got to fold the washing quick.
- 15:28I'll put in my book and I'll listen to my book for 5 minutes
- 15:30while I'm folding the washing because I can multitask like
- 15:33that. And it's, it's so good.
- 15:35If you have 1/2 hour drive to go pick up a kid.
- 15:38And this is again, speaking from experience, you have 1/2 hour
- 15:40drive to go pick up your kid from sport.
- 15:42You could be listening to a podcast in the car on your way
- 15:45to there. My kids now we have a bit of a
- 15:47conversation about, oh, do you mind if?
- 15:50And I always am very selective about which podcasts I have on
- 15:53in the car because there are some that have a couple of bad
- 15:55words. So I sort of choose ones that I
- 15:59know that they're OK to listen to.
- 16:01So yeah, they don't mind. I'm like, oh, do you mind if I'm
- 16:03he keeps listening to a podcast? No, that's fine.
- 16:05Or if they want to talk to me, I pause it and we have a bit of a
- 16:07conversation and they're like, oh, you can listen now, mom.
- 16:09So we have that respect and yeah, but it's not about
- 16:12perfection. It's just those little choices
- 16:14and they all add up over time. So that for me is like what you
- 16:18want to eat is a detox protein in your meals, water, vitamins,
- 16:22movement that fits your life and your mindset.
- 16:25All of those things are working together to help create that
- 16:28idea of nourish to flourish because you're taking care of
- 16:32your body and your mind when you're nourishing yourself
- 16:36fully. So your mind, your body, your
- 16:37soul, you will show up differently in every part of
- 16:40your life. You will have more patience,
- 16:43more energy, and so much more joy.
- 16:47You just become someone who can give more because you're not
- 16:49constantly running on empty. So, and I know if you were to
- 16:55talk to people that, that have known me my whole life and to
- 16:58where I am now, they would tell you the same thing that because
- 17:01I have focused on nourishing myself, I'm now this completely
- 17:05different flourished person. And I look different, I feel
- 17:08different and I, my energy is different, but I'm still me.
- 17:12But my personality and everything is just enhanced.
- 17:14So today I want to challenge you to pick just one thing, one
- 17:20thing that you could do to nourish yourself.
- 17:24Maybe it's booking that massage that you've been thinking about
- 17:27and putting off. Maybe it's swapping one of those
- 17:30coffees for a big glass of water or listening to a podcast that
- 17:34inspires you. Just start small, nourish
- 17:37yourself, and then just watch yourself flourish.
- 17:40It's gonna be amazing. So until next time, I hope you
- 17:46stay aligned and you keep thriving and you do go and focus
- 17:50on something to nourish yourself, your mind, your body,
- 17:52your soul, whatever it might be. I've given you lots of
- 17:56suggestions, lots of ideas for what works for me.
- 17:59It may not work for you. You can find something else, as
- 18:01I said, but lots of suggestions for you.
- 18:04And if you want to know more about what I do and my
- 18:07perspective, please dear me, send me a message on Instagram,
- 18:10the line thriving for teachers or on Facebook, same thing.
- 18:13And let me know your questions more than happy to answer
- 18:16because I want to help you go from nourishing to flourishing.
- 18:20Your body, taking care of your mind, your body, your soul, your
- 18:22whole world will make you such a better teacher, a better human,
- 18:26just all of the things. Let's look after your whole
- 18:28self. So if I can help you, make sure
- 18:30you send me a message so I'll get back to it.
- 18:32As as I said, I'll talk to you again next time.
- 18:34Stay aligned, keep driving. That's that's all I've got for
- 18:38you today. OK, Talk to you next time.
- 18:41Bye. The.
