- 0:00Welcome to Good News on Catholic Spirit Radio, a program for teens and almost
- 0:04teens to better understand that the gospel of Jesus Christ is relevant in their
- 0:08lives, and it's a place where your questions about faith and religion can be answered.
- 0:13And now, here's your host, Deacon Al.
- 0:17Good evening, and welcome to Good News on Catholic Spirit Radio.
- 0:21I'm Deacon Al Lundy, a permanent deacon of the Peoria Diocese,
- 0:24and always happy to be with you on Saturday and Sunday evenings from 8 to 8.30
- 0:29here on Catholic Spirit Radio, bringing you the good news of Jesus Christ through
- 0:34the readings of the Mass.
- 0:35And so we'll be getting to those a little later in the program,
- 0:39where we'll hear from Luke in the Acts of the Apostles, from John in Revelation,
- 0:44and then again from John in the Gospel.
- 0:47So this is the fifth Sunday of Easter. We're closing in quickly on Pentecost.
- 0:53Sorry, my mind just shut down for a moment there. Closing in on Pentecost and
- 0:57then back into ordinary time.
- 0:59And it's definitely spring. I know we haven't had our first day yet,
- 1:04but it's really so enjoyable out. It's going to be like 90 degrees today.
- 1:09So just insane. We had, you know, I love wildlife.
- 1:13I've got my backyard set up to welcome bees and butterflies and birds.
- 1:19And we also have raccoons. Now, I don't bait the raccoons. I'm not trying to
- 1:23feed them. I do try and bring in the butterflies and the bees and the birds.
- 1:27But with that, you get possums and raccoons and things of that sort.
- 1:31But the other night, I had a coyote.
- 1:33I mean, a big, healthy coyote come trotting through my backyard about four o'clock
- 1:38in the morning. The security camera caught it.
- 1:41And, you know, I think that's pretty cool because I also have rabbits and I'd
- 1:46love to have more coyotes and fewer rabbits.
- 1:48So maybe that's a good sign.
- 1:51But it is a sign of life. And that's what I love about my backyard.
- 1:54It is just so full of life.
- 1:57So when I need time for contemplation, for prayer, I go into my backyard.
- 2:02You should have someplace at your home that you can go to for quiet and solace and prayer.
- 2:09And it might not be your backyard with possums and raccoons and coyotes,
- 2:13but maybe you've got a den or a place in the basement where you can not have a television,
- 2:19leave the phone out of the room and just go there to talk to God and to listen
- 2:25to God's reply in prayer.
- 2:27If you don't have a spot like that in your home, take time this weekend to make
- 2:30a spot like that somewhere at your home.
- 2:33The, what else was I going to tell you? Oh, yeah, the Pope. Pope Leo XIV,
- 2:39when he was Father Robert Prevost, he was born right near where I was born,
- 2:45where I lived, just a few miles away from where I lived.
- 2:47And it turns out he was an associate professor
- 2:52priest at my wife's parish, at my wife's home parish.
- 2:56Now, by the time he was there, we were already married and here in the Twin Cities.
- 3:01But it's just cool to know that at a parish in the town I lived,
- 3:06I lived in the south end, my wife's family from the north end of town, St.
- 3:10Victor's in Calumet City, Illinois, was a place where now Pope Leo XIV,
- 3:16then Father Robert Prevost, served as a priest.
- 3:19And I'm telling everybody because I doubt that Pope Leo's telling anybody that story.
- 3:24I don't think he's going around the Vatican saying, hey, guess what?
- 3:27I was at Sharon Lundy's parish for a few years.
- 3:30But I thought it was important enough to tell, and since he's not telling,
- 3:33I thought I would. Right? Seems fair. Seems fair.
- 3:36Oh, we have a, in Bloomington, we have a women's curcio coming up.
- 3:40We're still looking for participants.
- 3:42It's not going to be until the second week of June.
- 3:46So there's still time to sign up. If you're interested in going through a Curcio
- 3:50weekend, I love these things.
- 3:52I've done, gosh, close to 30 of them now, I would guess.
- 3:56And what a wonderful weekend to spend with fellow Christians, not just Catholics.
- 4:02We have Christians from all different Christian churches in town and within
- 4:05about a 30-mile radius coming.
- 4:07A great time to spend the weekend re-evaluating your life, re-evaluating the
- 4:14cooperation of your life with the Holy Spirit and the will of God.
- 4:18It's just a marvelous time. We treat you like a princess. We feed you.
- 4:23We entertain you. We fill you with a lot of good information on the Christian faith.
- 4:29And it's very inexpensive. $150 Thursday through Sunday. so three nights in
- 4:35a hotel for $150 a nice hotel.
- 4:40Yeah, it is. It's quite a deal. I think people would really enjoy it.
- 4:43We would love to have a large class again, like we did with the last men's course.
- 4:47So if you're interested, the easiest way to sign up is to go to bncurseo,
- 4:54that's C-U-R-S-I-L-L-O, bncurseo.org.
- 5:00And you'll find on the front page there, you'll find an application.
- 5:05You'll need a sponsor, someone who's been through Curcio. If you ask at your
- 5:10church, you will probably find someone.
- 5:12We've had tens of thousands of people attend a Curcio weekend just in our diocese.
- 5:18And I'm sure you have people in your diocese who have attended as well.
- 5:21But you do need a sponsor. But
- 5:23if you don't have one, just let us know and we'll find a sponsor for you.
- 5:26Because we really want you to come. It's very important.
- 5:29We feel it's very important to your relationship with God. It's not the only
- 5:34way to build a relationship with God, but it's a good way. It's a really effective way.
- 5:39And we think you'd really enjoy
- 5:41it, and it's something that you will not forget during your lifetime.
- 5:46So that's my little few plugs for today.

- 9:01We can answer questions about things you like, things you don't like,
- 9:05things you don't understand, things you think you understand and want to know more about.
- 9:09We can help with that. Please drop us a line at goodnews at catholicspiritradio.com,
- 9:15and we will take your questions on the air.
- 9:18Been a lot of questions lately about Mary because May is the month of Mary.
- 9:23One of the two months out of the year that we pay special attention to Mary on.
- 9:27And the question is, why do Catholics consider Mary a goddess? We don't. We never have.
- 9:34Never have. That was kind of a nasty rumor spread by other people,
- 9:38not by the Catholic, not ever been a teaching of the Catholic Church.
- 9:41But there is one thing to consider And that's Mary's role in our salvation.
- 9:47Because we tend to say that everybody tends to only focus on the role of Jesus
- 9:52in salvation. And that's very true.
- 9:54He is definitely the focal point.
- 9:57But you can't talk about Jesus without talking about his incarnation,
- 10:02without understanding that this is not God who just merely appeared out of nowhere,
- 10:08just kind of faded into existence.
- 10:12Jesus came into existence through a human woman, and not just any human woman,
- 10:17through a specific one, a woman chosen from her conception by God to bear Jesus
- 10:24and bring him into humanity.
- 10:27So that alone makes Mary very special. Do we worship Mary separate from Jesus?
- 10:33No, because without Jesus, Mary has no importance at all.
- 10:39If Mary had never—I mean, think about all the millions and billions of women
- 10:42who did not give birth to Jesus.
- 10:44None of them hold any kind of a special place in the hearts of Catholicism.
- 10:50So without Jesus, Mary is nothing. And I think Fulton Sheen gives a great explanation
- 10:56of this in he compares Mary to the moon, and that the moon at night is quite beautiful.
- 11:02But the moonlight doesn't actually come from the moon.
- 11:07Moonlight is a reflection of the sun off of the moon. Well, that's Mary.
- 11:13Mary in herself is nothing special without the light of Christ.
- 11:19It's the light of Christ that illumines Mary in our faith.
- 11:23And not just our faith. If you want to read some really beautiful writings about
- 11:28Mary and beautiful reflections on her importance, there's a ton of them out
- 11:33there written by a man by the name of Martin Luther.
- 11:36Yeah, that same one. The Martin Luther who started the Lutheran Church was a huge devotee of Mary.
- 11:44And you can just look up on the internet, Reflections on Mary by Martin Luther,
- 11:48and you'll find a bunch, and they're just gorgeous.
- 11:51So it's not just the Catholic faith who holds Mary in reverence.
- 11:56The Lutheran faith started out that way, and then with time changed as other
- 12:03influences came into the Lutheran Church besides Martin Luther.
- 12:08And unfortunately, one of the things that happened was they pulled away from their faith in Mary.
- 12:13But this is the month of Mary, the month of May, and so invite everyone to take
- 12:19extra time to reflect on Mary's role in salvation and how the fact that without Mary,
- 12:25there is no Christ in the human world, okay?
- 12:28The Word of God would still have existed with God, in God.
- 12:32However, the only reason that Christ was here on earth was through the obedience
- 12:39of Mary and Mary's love for God and obedience to God.
- 12:44So she is a very special woman to us, but she's not God and she's not a goddess,
- 12:49and she's not as important or more important than Jesus.
- 12:52But she is important because Jesus makes her important.
- 12:57Our readings this Sunday, the fifth Sunday of Easter, as I say,
- 13:00this is the last Sunday of Easter before we get into Pentecost.
- 13:04And Pentecost in itself, we'll talk next week, a really important day in the
- 13:09church and not a holiday that the Catholic Church started.
- 13:15Pentecost was celebrated by the Jews before it was ever celebrated in the Christian
- 13:19world, and for a very different reason, but on the same day.
- 13:25So, we can talk about that next week.
- 13:27So, this week is the fifth Sunday, and this is so appropriate because so many
- 13:32schools right now are graduating.
- 13:34And the focus of the gospel this week is the graduation speech by Jesus, is really what it is.
- 13:41When you hear it, it's a very short speech by the valedictorian,
- 13:45by the head of the class, talking to the rest of the class.
- 13:48And that's why we see this reading at this time of year in the church.
- 13:53So, our first reading is from the Acts of the Apostles. This is written by Luke,
- 13:58who spent time with Paul as Paul's scribe, as it were.
- 14:02And so, these stories are given to us about Paul by Luke, who was there with
- 14:09him at the time that many of these things happened.
- 14:13And he writes, After Paul and Barnabas had proclaimed the good news in that
- 14:17city and made a considerable number of disciples, they returned to Lystra and
- 14:23to Iconium and to Antioch.
- 14:25They strengthened the spirits of the disciples and exhorted them to persevere
- 14:31in the faith, saying, It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God.
- 14:38They appointed elders for them in each church and with prayer and fasting commended
- 14:43them to the Lord in whom they had put their faith.
- 14:46Then they traveled through Pisidia and reached Pamphylia.
- 14:50After proclaiming the word at Perga, they then went to Atilia,
- 14:55and from there they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the
- 14:59grace of God for the work that they had now accomplished.
- 15:03And when they arrived, they called the church together and reported what God
- 15:07had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles, the word of the Lord.
- 15:13So as you read this, you'll see in the first few phrases, what it's telling
- 15:16us is, these guys were busy.
- 15:19I mean, they weren't just sitting around just proclaiming the word of God in one town.
- 15:24These were hardworking men who really struggled. These towns are not close together.
- 15:29This is not an easy walk. This isn't where you take an Uber.
- 15:33You don't grab an Uber to go from Lystra to Iconium.
- 15:36This is a long walk through mountainous areas, through desert areas in some cases.
- 15:42Paul walked hundreds, actually over a thousand miles by foot on these trips.
- 15:48And he made more than one circuit on this walk.
- 15:52And he's going around to churches that they started,
- 15:55and they're appointing elders. So, they're acting as bishops.
- 15:59They're establishing parishes, and they're anointing bishops.
- 16:05I'm sorry, anointing priests.
- 16:07So, that's the work that Paul and Barnabas are involved in, and they're covering a huge area.
- 16:12I mean, they're going to areas in Greece, in Turkey, in Iran.
- 16:16This is a huge area of the Middle East that they're covering.
- 16:20And as they go, they're making the church stronger and stronger.
- 16:23They're almost all of Paul's epistles, he's solving problems that are taking
- 16:27places in various churches.
- 16:29And that's why we keep them, because we see churches having some of the same
- 16:32problems today that Paul addressed 2,000 years ago.
- 16:36And that's why these epistles are so important. And it gives us information
- 16:41about the evolution of the Catholic Church.
- 16:46So he's moving around a lot of places over a huge difference,
- 16:50sorry, over a huge area of the world,
- 16:54making parishes, and reminding people what it means to be Catholic,
- 17:00and that it was very hard at that time because of so many ways that the persecution
- 17:06of the Christians was not easy.
- 17:09A lot of martyrs at that time, a lot, a lot of martyrs.
- 17:12And so Paul's just telling everybody, keep the faith, persevere in the faith,
- 17:16hang in there, because eventually.
- 17:18Christ is taking over the world. It's going to happen eventually.
- 17:23And we're still waiting for that moment.
- 17:24And we're still being asked to persevere. We're being reminded that life is
- 17:29going to have hardships.
- 17:30But we have to remain steadfast in our Christian faith. And that faith comes
- 17:35down to one thing. It comes down to love.
- 17:38Loving God, loving our neighbors. And we're going to hear about that again in
- 17:42the graduation speech that Jesus is going to share with us in the gospel.
- 17:47Our second reading is going to be from Revelation.
- 17:51This is coming out about the 21st chapter, beginning of the 21st chapter of
- 17:56Revelation, where in Revelation, John is talking to us about this vision that he had.
- 18:01And this vision is giving him information about heaven, about how Christ is
- 18:07viewing the church on earth, what he wants of it and for it.
- 18:12And so in the second reading, John writes, Then I, John, saw a new heaven and a new earth.
- 18:19The former heaven and the former earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.
- 18:24I also saw the holy city, a new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God,
- 18:30prepared as a bride adorned by her husband.
- 18:33I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, Behold, God's dwelling is with the human race.
- 18:39He will dwell with them, and they will be His people. God Himself will always
- 18:44be with them as their God.
- 18:46He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and there shall be no more death
- 18:51or mourning, wailing or pain.
- 18:53For the old order has passed away.
- 18:56The one who sat on the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. The word of the Lord.
- 19:03So what we're hearing here in the book of Revelation is really two things.
- 19:07The coming of the church is,
- 19:09after Christ's passion, and also the second coming of Christ.
- 19:14They're really looking at them as two of the same things, both coming from heaven,
- 19:19both contain God, right?
- 19:23Jesus and the church both house God.
- 19:28And when they came, when the church came, established by Christ,
- 19:33it changed the world. almost every bit of human history can be traced back to
- 19:39some action taking place within the church.
- 19:42We are the core for the last 2,000 years.
- 19:45Christianity has been the core of human history. But it also talks about the
- 19:50coming of God for the second coming.
- 19:52And I kind of focused in on this line about them being adorned like a bride.
- 19:58You know, throughout Scripture, when Jesus talks about heaven,
- 20:02And he often refers to it, for us to be able to imagine it, as a wedding reception, as a party.
- 20:09And what would you expect at a party? You expect decorations.
- 20:12You expect everybody to dress their best, right?
- 20:14And on their best behavior. And you can imagine music and joy emanating from this party.
- 20:21We kind of think of the same thing when you think about heaven,
- 20:23don't you? I mean, it's not going to be a drab place. It's going to be this
- 20:26amazing place, fully adorned, fully decorated, exerting great joy.
- 20:34You can imagine the music, the singing, waiting for us, right?
- 20:39And so he's giving us a view of that in this reading, that what waits for us
- 20:45in heaven is this amazing wedding party with the church as the bride,
- 20:51Jesus as the bridegroom.
- 20:54And yet, we have people who will look at the Catholic Church and say, well, it's so lavish.
- 21:01I mean, look at the fancy clothes and vestments and look at the fancy decorations
- 21:06and look how ornate the churches are.
- 21:09They read it in Scripture and think, oh, yeah, that's heaven. That's beautiful.
- 21:14They see it in the church and they say, oh, that seems so ostentatious.
- 21:18No, no. No, we're mimicking, we're showing by example, what John says awaits
- 21:25us in the presence of God.
- 21:28So we're inviting God and his heaven into our home, into our home, the church.
- 21:36In our gospel, this takes place right after Judas has left the Last Supper and
- 21:44is on his way to betray Jesus.
- 21:47So who's left? Well, Jesus' closest disciples.
- 21:52And Jesus has seen Judas leave, and so he knows what's next.
- 21:56He knows that as soon as Judas leaves, he's gone to arrange for Christ's arrest.
- 22:02And immediately following that, we're going to see his passion and death and resurrection.
- 22:07So what starts off as a really bad day turns into a really good day.
- 22:12So our gospel reading from John says, when Judas had left them,
- 22:16Jesus said, Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
- 22:22If God is glorified in him, God also is glorified himself in him,
- 22:27and God will glorify him at once.
- 22:30My children, and this is where the graduation speech comes in,
- 22:35My children, I will be with you only a little while longer.
- 22:38I give you a new commandment.
- 22:41Love one another as I have loved you, so also you should love one another.
- 22:46This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one
- 22:52another. The gospel of the Lord.
- 22:54It's a really short gospel. It's a really short gospel. But when you think about
- 22:58it in the time we're in now, it's a graduation speech.
- 23:02It's Jesus taking up three years of teaching and bringing it down,
- 23:07purifying it down to one easy,
- 23:11easily understood meaning and easily understood teaching for the apostles to
- 23:16use to build an entire faith on. And look how long that's lasted.
- 23:21And it's so simple because everything Jesus taught about healing,
- 23:26about forgiveness, about compassion, all comes down to love. Thank you.
- 23:32Our Christian faith is about love. Love God, love others.
- 23:37And if we all did that, think of how different this world would be.
- 23:42We could solve poverty. We could solve hunger. We could solve war.
- 23:47We could solve crime. If everyone believed in loving God and in loving their
- 23:54neighbor, that would resolve all human problems.
- 23:58You'd still have little things that we can't control, volcanoes, hurricanes, floods.
- 24:05But you know what? We would respond to them in an entirely different way.
- 24:10We would respond to them with the love of neighbor and the love of God,
- 24:14and we would find ways to help people faster, help people more.
- 24:22To resolve their pain, to heal their pain. But we don't do that.
- 24:27I'm always amazed when somebody mentions, well, I wanted this to happen,
- 24:33but the people came and they did this. And the first response is,
- 24:35well, are you going to sue them?
- 24:37How counter to our Christian faith is that?
- 24:41Look at our politics. I mean, half of all Christians, I should say,
- 24:47are Democrats, liberals.
- 24:49Half of them are Republicans, conservatives. And yet, look how much time we
- 24:54spend calling each other names.
- 24:56And Jesus says, no, love each other the way I love you.
- 25:00And we have such a hard time doing that. Each says the other one's not just
- 25:05wrong. It's okay to be wrong.
- 25:07It's okay to say somebody's wrong, but to insult them because they're wrong,
- 25:14to think that they're not worthy of God because they're wrong,
- 25:19to think they're not worthy of heaven because they're wrong.
- 25:23That's not our role. We're not the judge. We're not the law.
