- 0:00With the uncertainty around
- 0:01the US election now behind
- 0:02us, investors are looking for the next opportunity.
- 0:05So with an accommodative fed,
- 0:07a tech rally
- 0:07that doesn't seem to have an end in sight,
- 0:10and decent valuations in small caps.
- 0:12My next guest sees pockets of opportunity.
- 0:14But what about on the fixed income side?
- 0:16Well he has some thoughts there as well.
- 0:18We're going to get to that right now.
- 0:19On UBS trending.
- 0:31Hello again everyone.
- 0:32Thank you for joining us.
- 0:33I'm Anthony Pistorius and this is UBS trending.
- 0:36Please join me in welcoming guests back to the studio.
- 0:39Who needs no introduction.
- 0:40He's been a frequent friend of ours and a frequent guest.
- 0:42Eddie Gabor, co-founder and CEO of Key Advisors Wealth Management.
- 0:46Eddie, it's always a pleasure to have you join the show with us.
- 0:49Thanks for being here.
- 0:50Thank you for having me. Yeah. My pleasure.
- 0:52So it's been a couple of months
- 0:53since you've been on with us, Eddie,
- 0:55and a lot has changed through the summer
- 0:56and obviously the election. So that's behind us.
- 0:59And we did obviously see on the equity side a pretty strong post
- 1:02election rally.
- 1:04So the question is
- 1:05where do you see this going when you were talking
- 1:07about the equity side of the market,
- 1:09what do we expect now for the next couple of months into next year?
- 1:13So I think as we look out to the first quarter of next year,
- 1:16I think the equity markets are going to stay extremely resilient.
- 1:20And continue to trend high.
- 1:23I do you'll see pockets of dips, of course,
- 1:26because when you get an overbought market, you'll get, dips
- 1:30that will follow that.
- 1:31But right now, as we have shared with our clients, in our opinion,
- 1:35every dip
- 1:36for the right investor, the right risk
- 1:37tolerance should be bought,
- 1:38because I think you're going to see asset prices
- 1:41go significantly higher.
- 1:44And the reason why is there is a lot of cash
- 1:46that was on the sideline pre-election because of one, you know,
- 1:52what this election was going to look like
- 1:54from a fundamental perspective on taxes and regulations.
- 1:58So that way they can draw up their playbook
- 2:00for how they want to go with their cash.
- 2:03And I think you're going to see a lot of money
- 2:05flow into the equity market.
- 2:06You go see a lot of performance chasing.
- 2:08And that's why we continue to be,
- 2:10very bullish here over the next 3 to 4 months.
- 2:14How much of that do you think, Eddie?
- 2:15I mean,
- 2:15obviously everyone was waiting for
- 2:17the election results to be known.
- 2:20And so there was that uncertainty that went out the window.
- 2:22Now we know it's a Trump administration.
- 2:24How much of that do you think with this going into the stock
- 2:27market is related to expectations on the fed?
- 2:30Also just kind of them being so accommodative,
- 2:33how much of that plays into what you're thinking is here?
- 2:36A lot of it does.
- 2:37I mean, at the end of the day,
- 2:38the biggest thing that we can take away when we put
- 2:40election behind us, is you have a fed
- 2:44that is a,
- 2:45I would call it
- 2:46aggressively cutting rates at a time that there's no recession.
- 2:49It's very rare to see that.
- 2:51I don't even know if there's a precedent for that.
- 2:54I personally think it's a mistake.
- 2:56However, I'm not going to fight the fed.
- 2:59And if you're going to loosen monetary policy in an environment
- 3:02where the labor market is still strong,
- 3:04the economy is showing growth.
- 3:07Company earnings are looking good.
- 3:09That's about as bullish as it gets.
- 3:11And so it's really hard right now to find something
- 3:15very bearish to hang your hat on.
- 3:18And until the fed changes we're not going to fight that.
- 3:22Yeah I mean I would have to agree looking at even just the way
- 3:25we just had the charts up there for the S&P 500
- 3:28and even the Russell 2000,
- 3:29we're going to get into small caps in a minute.
- 3:31But clearly they're still aggressive buying when it comes to
- 3:36large caps especially in the S&P side.
- 3:38So let me just kind of fast forward a little bit.
- 3:40Now putting election behind us.
- 3:43We still have a lot of conflicting, issues
- 3:46happening overseas between Ukraine and Russia.
- 3:49And of course, what's going on in the Middle East.
- 3:50So given what we know, and with the new administration coming in
- 3:54from a sector perspective,
- 3:55where do you see the best opportunities here?
- 3:59So what we have done is we are staying away
- 4:02and being extremely underweight consumer staples and health care
- 4:06and our tactical strategies.
- 4:07We don't even have consumer staples at all in the portfolio.
- 4:10We want to be in the higher beta, higher risk areas, small caps.
- 4:15We continue to add to our small cap position.
- 4:18It's been one of the probably worst places
- 4:21to be here over the last three years.
- 4:22I think this environment
- 4:24is going to be conducive to regional banks and financials,
- 4:27and small caps should thrive in that environment
- 4:30because they seem to be overweight.
- 4:31That, large cap financials, again, are another area you can add to.
- 4:36And we also tech I mean Mega-cap tech
- 4:39is going to continue to lead the way in our opinion.
- 4:42If you take a look at what was the most,
- 4:45appreciated assets in reaction to the election,
- 4:48I think if you look at those in order,
- 4:50that's where you're going to want to be.
- 4:53And so you want to stay away from defensive equities
- 4:55and you want to be more in your more aggressive equities
- 4:58that are more growth oriented.
- 4:59Because that
- 5:00or those are the stocks in our opinion, that are going to thrive,
- 5:03in this type of environment,
- 5:05even on the fixed income side, is being more aggressive on there.
- 5:08If that risk tolerance is suitable
- 5:10for the investor making that decision. Yeah, absolutely.
- 5:12And just to give our audience
- 5:13a little bit of color from our side
- 5:15and the UBS chief investment office,
- 5:17they do maintain an attractive view on large caps.
- 5:19And right now neutral on small and mid
- 5:22and right now I know you have a bullish call on small caps.
- 5:24We were just talking about that.
- 5:25I think for for CIO their concern is not necessarily tied
- 5:29directly to you know the precedent that's been set beforehand.
- 5:34They're just kind of saying
- 5:34profit growth could continue to lag
- 5:37a little bit when it comes to small.
- 5:38But the fact that the fed is cutting
- 5:40rates is pretty attractive,
- 5:41especially considering that there's so much kind of floating
- 5:44debt in the small cap space.
- 5:47So give us your thoughts on small caps here, Eddie.
- 5:51Small caps is really a contrarian play.
- 5:53It's probably
- 5:53one of the most hated areas in the most underweight area.
- 5:57When you take a look
- 5:58at how asset managers are positioned and so we have found that
- 6:02when you think you're going to see an acceleration
- 6:05of growth, that you want to get in there before everyone else does.
- 6:09And so I think you will see money rotate out of certain areas
- 6:12and go in the small caps.
- 6:14When people get more confident.
- 6:16They're very skittish now
- 6:17because of their lack of performance, in my opinion,
- 6:20because of their risk, because they're smaller companies.
- 6:23But again, when you look at regional banks and financials
- 6:26that are a big component, the small caps and you have the fed,
- 6:29cutting the short end, but the long end is continue
- 6:33to actually increase.
- 6:34From a business model
- 6:35perspective, financial companies
- 6:36can make a lot of money in that environment
- 6:39where they're lending out at a much higher rate
- 6:41than they're having to pay their clients.
- 6:43So I think it's a really good setup for small caps.
- 6:46And I think you will see a performance chase there.
- 6:49And those folks that are probably underweight will probably go more
- 6:51to neutral to overweight
- 6:53as we get into January and February of next year.
- 6:55Yeah, especially after you look at the chart.
- 6:57I mean, there was a lot of volatility from maybe,
- 6:59you know, late winter spring up until right around the election.
- 7:02And now we're seeing some pretty strong performance in there.
- 7:04Thanks, Eddie.
- 7:05As we're wrapping up, you know, you briefly mentioned fixed income.
- 7:08We can't get away from not talking about that because we did
- 7:11see obviously a lot of progress with the fed lowering rates.
- 7:14Our call here at CIO is another 125 basis points from the fed
- 7:18between the December meeting and all of 2025 as of now.
- 7:23But, you know,
- 7:23you still have a job market that's slowly decelerating.
- 7:26Inflation has mostly come under control.
- 7:29We're kind of to around that 2.4% mark,
- 7:31pretty close to the Fed's, the Fed's, inflation.
- 7:36You know, expectations.
- 7:37So what's the story behind them?
- 7:39What is the bond market telling you here.
- 7:41Because equities is one story but bonds is another.
- 7:45In my opinion the bond market is telling me that the fed
- 7:48is making a policy mistake by cutting so aggressively.
- 7:51If you look at the chart
- 7:52on the ten year,
- 7:53it has gone straight up since they started cutting rates.
- 7:56And when you cut interest rates, you are basically, in my opinion,
- 8:00stimulating the economy
- 8:01and you're going to cause asset prices to go up.
- 8:04This is what you're seeing with stocks.
- 8:06So if they cut in December and then they also cut
- 8:09in January
- 8:10or the beginning of next year,
- 8:12our biggest concern that we are seeing a very high
- 8:15probability of happening
- 8:16is you're going to see inflation reaccelerate,
- 8:19and the fed is going to have to pause on cutting rates.
- 8:23And the biggest fear we have is if it gets too hot,
- 8:27they have to raise rates next year.
- 8:29That's not priced into the market.
- 8:30And I don't think many people are prepared for that.
- 8:33And I think there is a high probability
- 8:36that we absolutely see inflationary accelerate.
- 8:39And we'll have to wait and see how the fed reacts to that,
- 8:41because I don't think there's any way
- 8:43they're going to be able to cut next year
- 8:44as aggressively as the market has priced in.
- 8:46Right.
- 8:47What makes you think that you're going to see inflation accelerate?
- 8:49I mean,
- 8:50I mean tariffs, if, President Trump does put tariffs in place,
- 8:54there's a call that that could cause inflation, especially
- 8:57here in the US.
- 8:59Is that part of the story.
- 9:00Is there something else that's going on there.
- 9:02So you have that.
- 9:04You have the Middle East and overseas issues that are going
- 9:07to continue to keep energy prices high.
- 9:09You also look at immigration reform that we could potentially
- 9:12have, right.
- 9:13That's going to put some strain on businesses and cause prices
- 9:16to go up
- 9:17because of laborers are going to have to replace
- 9:20and again, at the end of the day, when a fed is cutting
- 9:23rates, that's inflationary in itself.
- 9:25And so when you take a look at all those components,
- 9:28I don't see how asset prices don't accelerate
- 9:31with all of those things happening.
- 9:32So,
- 9:33it's going to be a very to me, it's very reminiscent
- 9:35of what happened in the late 70s
- 9:37when they thought they beat inflation,
- 9:39they took their foot off the gas,
- 9:40and then we had a re acceleration
- 9:42that had the caused them
- 9:43to raise rates and kill the economy to get things back in line.
- 9:47I hope it's
- 9:47not that extreme,
- 9:48but there's a lot of similarities between those two time periods.
- 9:51Yeah. Eddie, thank you very much.
- 9:52Appreciate your views there and
- 9:54and backing it up with some real catalysts.
- 9:55So thank you very much Eddie Gabor. Always a pleasure to have you.
