- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarfl Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Welcome to Connecting the Dots. I'm Alex.
- 0:17And I'm Morgan. And it is Tuesday, January 13th,
- 0:202026. It is. And looking outside here in Sacramento,
- 0:23we've got a dense fog advisory until about 10
- 0:26zero a .m. this morning. be careful out there
- 0:30yeah definitely and across the country it's actually
- 0:32you know Well above average temperatures for
- 0:35most of the lower 48 Mm -hmm, but there is a
- 0:39wintry mix moving through the upper Great Lakes
- 0:41today And that's going to spread out a bit right
- 0:43through the Appalachians and Northeast tomorrow
- 0:45and Thursday looks like it Okay, quick look at
- 0:48the markets a little bit of a mixed bag the Dow
- 0:51closed down slightly about point four seven percent
- 0:53But it's still positive for the week almost one
- 0:56point nine percent since last Monday exactly
- 0:58and the S &P 500 Basically flat for the day down
- 1:01point zero four percent But it's also up for
- 1:03the week and Bitcoin is having a pretty strong
- 1:05day up one point six four percent All right before
- 1:08we jump into our main stories We want to give
- 1:10a shout out to our sponsor today's conversation
- 1:12is brought to you by old glory They're an iconic
- 1:15music and sports fan merch store. If you're looking
- 1:18for great stuff for that techie friend for the
- 1:20holidays, they have you covered. And if you use
- 1:23the promo code SNARFL at checkout, you get 15
- 1:25% off your entire purchase. You can find them
- 1:27over at OldGlory .com. OK, so let's get into
- 1:30it. Let's do it. Today we're looking at three
- 1:33huge stories from our Morningstar. That's our
- 1:36internal SNARFL Tech article report. And they
- 1:38all connect technology, regulation, and some
- 1:41very real world costs. Yeah. The theme today
- 1:44is definitely accountability. Who pays the bill
- 1:46for all this innovation? Exactly. So our first
- 1:48story is a big one. We're seeing a global crackdown
- 1:51on AI deepfakes, and it's starting in the UK.
- 1:54Right. The UK regulator, Ofcom, has just opened
- 1:57a formal investigation into X. And this is under
- 2:00their new online safety act, the OSA. It's all
- 2:03because of some deeply concerning reports involving
- 2:06the Grok AI chatbot. Yeah, this is a landmark
- 2:09moment. This law gives Ofcom some serious teeth,
- 2:12and the investigation is zeroing in on the creation
- 2:15and sharing of illegal content. And we should
- 2:18be clear, the specific charges are incredibly
- 2:20serious. They are. The probe is looking at non
- 2:24-consensual intimate images. Those AI -generated
- 2:27deepfakes we hear so much about. And even more
- 2:30disturbing, sexualized images of children, child
- 2:33sexual abuse material, or CSAM. And that is the
- 2:37absolute red line. Ofcom's job now is to figure
- 2:40out if X actually did what it was supposed to
- 2:42do to protect UK users. So what does that involve?
- 2:45What are they looking for? Well, a few things.
- 2:48First, did they take the right steps to prevent
- 2:49users from even seeing this priority illegal
- 2:52content in the first place? And second, once
- 2:54they knew about it, how quickly did they get
- 2:55it down? Exactly. But it's also about prevention.
- 2:58They're looking at whether X properly assess
- 3:00the risks to children on the platform. And if
- 3:02they put in what the law calls highly effective
- 3:04age assurance. Right, basically technology to
- 3:07make sure kids aren't seeing pornography and
- 3:09other harmful stuff. So let's talk consequences,
- 3:11because this is where it gets real. It does.
- 3:14If X is found to have broken the law, the fines
- 3:16are just crippling. Up to 18 million, which is
- 3:20what, about 24 .3 million US dollars? Yeah, or
- 3:2410 % of their qualifying worldwide revenue, whichever
- 3:26number is higher. Either way, That is a massive
- 3:29hit. And that's just the money. Ofcom can go
- 3:31even further, can't they? Oh, absolutely. If
- 3:34things are bad enough, they can get a court order
- 3:36to block payment providers or even advertisers
- 3:38from working with X. So they can just choke off
- 3:41the revenue stream. They can. And in the most
- 3:43extreme cases, they can actually require internet
- 3:46providers to block the site completely in the
- 3:48UK. Wow. And this isn't just a UK thing, is it?
- 3:51It feels like a global movement. It is. Malaysia
- 3:55and Indonesia have already temporarily blocked
- 3:57Croc. They said it repeated misuse. And Indonesia's
- 4:01communication minister called it a serious violation
- 4:03of human rights. That is strong language. It's
- 4:06a clear signal that the days of, you know, move
- 4:09fast and break things are over when it comes
- 4:11to AI. And has X tried to fix this? Well, they
- 4:14recently limited image editing features to paying
- 4:17verified subscribers. Okay, so a paywall for
- 4:20the powerful tools. In theory. But reports from
- 4:24just this Monday showed that non -paying users
- 4:27could still get to the generation tools through
- 4:29the Grok tab. So the fix was leaky at best. Which
- 4:34is such a strange look. You're basically making
- 4:36the tools that are being used to create illegal
- 4:38material a premium paid feature. It's a very
- 4:42tough position for them to be in. The regulators
- 4:43are clearly not waiting around for them to figure
- 4:45it out. Right. So from regulatory costs to subscription
- 4:49costs, let's pivot to our second story. Apple.
- 4:54They've just announced a new subscription bundle
- 4:55called Apple Creator Studio. And this is aimed
- 4:58squarely at creatives, right? It launches January
- 5:0128th. It is. And what's interesting here is the
- 5:03strategy. Apple is pushing hard into services,
- 5:06and this bundle is all about integrating their
- 5:09best creative apps with a lot of new AI features.
- 5:12So let's talk about what you get. The price is
- 5:14$12 .99 a month or $129 for the year. Which is
- 5:17a pretty good deal when you see what's included.
- 5:19You get Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro. And the big
- 5:21one Pixelmator Pro is coming to the iPad for
- 5:23the very first time. That is huge news. But I
- 5:27think the really smart move here is the student
- 5:29and educator pricing. Right. It's just $2 .99
- 5:33a month, or about 30 bucks for the whole year.
- 5:36That's not a discount. That is a market lock
- 5:39-in strategy. You get students and new creatives
- 5:42hooked on your professional software for a price
- 5:44they can actually afford. And when they graduate
- 5:47and start their careers, they just stick with
- 5:49what they know. It's brilliant. It is. But let's
- 5:51get into the AI because that's the real value
- 5:53proposition here. OK, so in Final Cut Pro for
- 5:56video editing, there's a new transcript search.
- 6:00What does that do? It's a massive time saver.
- 6:03The AI transcribes all of your video footage
- 6:06automatically. So if you need to find a clip
- 6:08where someone says a specific phrase, you just
- 6:10type it in and boom, there it is. Instead of
- 6:12scrubbing through hours of tape, I can see editors
- 6:15loving that. And then there's visual search.
- 6:17You can describe an object or an action like
- 6:20blue car drives past a coffee shop, and the AI
- 6:22finds those exact moments in your footage. That's
- 6:25incredible. And they're pulling in AI from their
- 6:27music software, too. Yep. They're using beat
- 6:30detection from Logic Pro to help you quickly
- 6:32line up your video edits to the rhythm of a song.
- 6:36It's all about making the creative process faster.
- 6:39And these AI features aren't just for the Pro
- 6:41apps, are they? No, they're trickling down into
- 6:44iWork, too. So pages, numbers, and keynote are
- 6:47still free for basic stuff. But the subscription
- 6:50unlocks the really powerful AI tools. Exactly.
- 6:53Like a new content hub, using generative models
- 6:56from OpenAI to create images, or a super resolution
- 7:00feature to upscale low quality photos. What about
- 7:03for something like a spreadsheet? What does AI
- 7:05do in numbers? This is pretty cool. There's a
- 7:07beta feature called Magic Fill. It's pattern
- 7:10recognition. So if you start filling out a complex
- 7:12spreadsheet, Magic Fill sees the pattern. And
- 7:14it just populates the rest of the rows for you.
- 7:16Exactly. It could save hours of boring data entry.
- 7:19So Apple is drawing a very clear line in the
- 7:21sand. Basic tools are free, but the smart, efficient,
- 7:25AI -powered future. That's going to cost you
- 7:26$12 .99 a month. That's the new model, and you're
- 7:29going to see it everywhere. Okay, that brings
- 7:32us to our third and honestly maybe the most critical
- 7:34story. It's about the literal physical cost of
- 7:38all this AI. Right. We're talking about Microsoft
- 7:41and its plan to deal with the massive local opposition
- 7:45to its AI data centers. These things use a staggering
- 7:48amount of energy, right? Almost unbelievable
- 7:50amount. It's putting a huge strain on the U .S.
- 7:53power grid. We're seeing reports of utility bills
- 7:55going up for regular consumers in at least 13
- 7:58states because of it. And the projections are
- 8:01kind of scary. Data centers used about 5 .2 percent
- 8:04of all U .S. power last year. And that's projected
- 8:07to nearly triple by 2030. It could be almost
- 8:1012 % of the country's total power usage. That
- 8:12is just not sustainable. You can see why local
- 8:15communities are pushing back. It's not just power
- 8:17either. It's heavy water usage for cooling. It's
- 8:20taking over rural farmland. Microsoft had to
- 8:22pull out of a project in Wisconsin because of
- 8:24this kind of opposition. Yeah, even President
- 8:27Trump weighed in saying these companies have
- 8:29to pay their own way. And Microsoft president
- 8:31Brad Smith admitted that electricity is the heavier
- 8:34lift compared to everything else. So what's in
- 8:37this five point plan? What are they promising
- 8:39to do? OK, so the biggest commitment, the one
- 8:41that's making headlines, is that they will ask
- 8:44utility companies to set higher electricity rates
- 8:47specifically for Microsoft. Wait, they're asking
- 8:49to pay more. That's the idea. The premium they
- 8:52pay is supposed to cover the cost of the new
- 8:55infrastructure their data centers require and
- 8:57shield local residents from those rate hikes.
- 9:00That is. Unusual? What else? They're also committing
- 9:04to replenish more water than they withdraw, so
- 9:06they're net positive on water. Okay, perfect.
- 9:08And they're promising to pay their full share
- 9:10of property taxes and create local jobs and AI
- 9:13training programs. You know, I appreciate the
- 9:16transparency of asking for a higher rate, but
- 9:19how do we actually know that rate covers the
- 9:21true cost? And that is the billion dollar question.
- 9:24Yeah. Consumer advocates are really worried about
- 9:26this. Why is that? Because these big bulk power
- 9:30deals are almost always confidential. So it's
- 9:34incredibly hard for anyone on the outside to
- 9:36verify who's really paying for what. So we just
- 9:39have to take their word for it. Pretty much.
- 9:41And groups like Clean Wisconsin are still calling
- 9:43for a moratorium on any new data center approvals
- 9:47until there's a real comprehensive regulatory
- 9:50plan in place that everyone can see. So the pressure
- 9:53is on. This isn't just a Microsoft problem. It's
- 9:56an industry wide problem. The bill for the digital
- 9:59world is finally coming due. And it's showing
- 10:02up in everyone's mailbox. Before we recap, let's
- 10:05thank our other sponsor. Today's conversation
- 10:07is also brought to you by Skony, the premium
- 10:10golf shoe store. If you're looking to improve
- 10:12your style and your game on the course, Skony
- 10:14has some incredible shoes, great looks, top -tier
- 10:17performance. And you can get 15 % off your entire
- 10:20purchase when you use the promo code SNARFL at
- 10:22checkout. Just head over to skony .com. Okay,
- 10:25so let's tie this all together. Three stories,
- 10:27one big theme. Right. First we saw global regulators
- 10:30putting a leash on powerful AI. The UK's investigation
- 10:33into X and Grok shows that the lawless frontier
- 10:36days for AI are over. Then we saw how Apple is
- 10:40using that same AI technology to change its business
- 10:43model, bundling professional software into the
- 10:46creator studio subscription, and using huge student
- 10:49discounts to lock in the next generation. And
- 10:52finally, the rubber meets the road. Big tech,
- 10:55starting with Microsoft, is finally being forced
- 10:57to pay for the enormous energy and environmental
- 11:00costs of its AI infrastructure. The big takeaway
- 11:03is that technology's impact is no longer abstract.
- 11:06It's hitting communities, regulations, and household
- 11:09budgets directly. Someone has to pay. You know,
- 11:13it really makes you wonder. If the cost of regulatory
- 11:16fines and the literal cost of electricity keep
- 11:18going up like this, is it only going to be the
- 11:21biggest companies that can afford to innovate
- 11:23in AI? Could it freeze out smaller startups?
- 11:26That's a huge question and I think we're starting
- 11:28to see the answer play out in real time. We're
