- 0:38Monster Catchers abound, I'm Stella Ferris and
- 0:40you have crash landed on the Monster Catcher
- 0:42Journal podcast. Not all glyphs are terrifying
- 0:47or ancient or filled with mysterious cosmic energy.
- 0:51Some are just little menaces with too much curiosity
- 0:55and not enough sense. And today we will be talking
- 0:58about a glyph called the pine wisp. We were camped
- 1:05out near the edge of the Viridian Veins, that
- 1:07massive glowing forest that stretched across
- 1:10Nibiru's northern hemisphere. Xena was cataloging
- 1:13samples while Luna was trying to fix the scanner,
- 1:17and I was trying not to think about how quiet
- 1:20it was. That's when something tugged my hair.
- 1:26Not a breeze, not a bug, not a tug. I turned
- 1:30around and there it was, this long, lean creature
- 1:33perched upside down from a branch, staring at
- 1:36me with bright golden eyes and a grin full of
- 1:39tiny needle -like teeth. It had my data chip
- 1:43clenched between its teeth. Although it had my
- 1:49data chip in its tiny, clever teeth, I couldn't
- 1:53move. Not a single muscle responded. Something
- 1:56about it held me in place, a strange mixture
- 1:59of curiosity and awe. At first glance, my mind
- 2:02tried to make sense of it. It looked almost like
- 2:06something I'd seen in an old earth -filled guide,
- 2:09the Irish Pine Martin, lith in an agile darting
- 2:15through the branches, but the resemblance ended
- 2:19there. For a long spine crawled like molten lava
- 2:23trapped beneath thin delicate skin, ran streaks
- 2:27of stone red, glowing as if the creature carried
- 2:30a miniature sun on its back. Tiny flickers of
- 2:34flames licked the edges of its fur, dancing across
- 2:38it without consuming a single hair, illuminating
- 2:41the misty air around us in warm flickering light.
- 2:47Each movement made the flames ripple and shift.
- 2:50a living, breathing fire painting, the shadows
- 2:54with motion. Then I noticed its head. Nestled
- 2:59just above its small, round ears were two straight
- 3:02black horns that rose like twin spikes of obsidian.
- 3:08Sharp and perfect, reflecting the moonlight and
- 3:11eerie glimmers, they seemed impossibly solid
- 3:13against the soft. fluid motion of the flames
- 3:17like a crown forged from dark darkness itself.
- 3:21The creature tilted its head, eyes gleaming with
- 3:26something almost mischievous, or perhaps knowing,
- 3:30and in the instant the world around me melted
- 3:33away. The air smelt faintly of pine and smoke.
- 3:42A heady mix that made my senses sharpen and tremble
- 3:47at once. It still flicked lazily, tipped with
- 3:51the same fiery red glow as its back, leaving
- 3:56faint trails of light that shimmered in the mist.
- 3:59Every instinct screamed that I should reach out,
- 4:01that I should run, that I should grab the chip
- 4:04and escape, but I couldn't. My gaze locked with
- 4:07its amber -green eyes and the world seemed to
- 4:10pause. as though this creature had the power
- 4:13to suspend time itself just for this moment.
- 4:17It was playful, yes, but not the ordinary sense
- 4:21of playful. Every twitch of its ear, every curl
- 4:25of its flaming tail, every deliberate glance
- 4:27felt deliberate, like it was studying me as much
- 4:32as I was studying it. And then I stood, utterly
- 4:35captivated, mesmerized by its impossible, otherworldly
- 4:39blend of flame, fur and horns spend it between
- 4:42the wild, familiar arity of Earth and the alien
- 4:46majesty of Nibiru. I finally blinked and shook
- 4:54my head, realizing that Xena and Luna were both
- 4:57staring at me, grinning like idiots. Stell, you're
- 5:01just staring at it like it's a glowing soda can
- 5:04or something. Honestly... I think it likes you
- 5:09or it's laughing at you, Luna said after Xenna.
- 5:13Before I could respond, the pine wisp leaped
- 5:15from the branch it had been perched on, flipping
- 5:19in midair like a streak of fire and landing with
- 5:22a soft pitter pat on a crystal root in one swift
- 5:25motion it batted my data chip towards Luna with
- 5:29its glowing tail. The chip rolled between her
- 5:32boots. She crouched to pick it up. Hey, it's
- 5:35giving it back! Luna said. But the moment she
- 5:42touched it, the pine wisp let out a high -pitched
- 5:44trill, and a tiny flicker of flame raced across
- 5:47its spine like a playful streak of lightning
- 5:50before we could react. It snatched a small gadget
- 5:53from Xena's pack, a sensor we'd been calibrating,
- 5:56and dashed up a nearby tree, its twin horns catching
- 5:59the pale light of Nibiru's twin suns and three
- 6:03moons. Oh no, Xena cried. Not again. We gave
- 6:09chase, moving careful over glowing moss and jagged
- 6:12roots. The creature zigzagged expertly through
- 6:17the low, hanging branches, occasionally dropping
- 6:19small sparks that bounced harmlessly off the
- 6:22ground like floating fireflies. Luna tried to
- 6:25mimic its chirping calls, laughing as the pine
- 6:28wisp paused, cocked its head, and copied her
- 6:31exactly, a perfect echo of her voice. For a moment
- 6:35I forgot the data chip entirely, captivated by
- 6:38the way it moved, its back shimmered in shades
- 6:40of red and orange, flames licking the stone,
- 6:44red streaks, with each twist of its agile body.
- 6:49The horns gleamed every time it paused to observe
- 6:52us, as if daring us to try to follow. Finally,
- 6:56after a few minutes of this playful chase, it
- 6:59landed on a flat branch above a small stream.
- 7:02With a flick of its tail, it gently dropped our
- 7:05stolen item at our feet, almost ceremoniously,
- 7:08before perching again, flicking its ears and
- 7:11letting out a soft trill, its gaze met mine again,
- 7:14amber green and almost teasing, and I knew it
- 7:17was enjoying every bit of our attempt to keep
- 7:20up. of the glyphs we've ever caught," Luna said.
- 7:29And way cuter, Xena added to the conversation.
- 7:34I reached out cautiously, but it bound it sideways,
- 7:38its fiery streaks rippling across its back and
- 7:41disappearing into the misty forest, leaving only
- 7:44faint glowing footprints behind. For a heartbeat,
- 7:47the world was still. The only sound that the
- 7:50soft bubbling of the stream, and the echo of
- 7:53its laughter lingering in the trees. I finally
- 7:56picked up my data chip, tucking it safely into
- 7:59my bag, and whispered almost to myself, you've
- 8:02got to be the most mischievous little creature
- 8:05on Nibiru, and I don't even mind. All right,
- 8:10we follow quietly and carefully, Zena said. Quietly,
- 8:16Lou... Have you seen it? That thing's a walking
- 8:20inferno with horns. It's probably laughing at
- 8:22us already. I swallowed, gripping my pack tighter.
- 8:27It's playful, not dangerous, I think. The forest
- 8:30around us seemed alive in a way even the emberwood
- 8:32usually wasn't, bioluminescent moss shimmering
- 8:37beneath our feet, tiny spores drifting through
- 8:40the humid air, and the faint crackle of fire
- 8:44on stone. Red fur echoed in the mist somewhere
- 8:47above. The pine wisp was moving, leaving tiny
- 8:50streaks of glowing light as if navigating the
- 8:53twisted branches like it owned the place. We
- 8:56climbed over fallen logs, careful not to disturb
- 8:58the glowing fungi that covered it. Then, out
- 9:02of nowhere, a faint trill reached us, identical
- 9:06to Luna's voice from earlier. The pine wisp was
- 9:09mimicking her again. Luna giggled nervously,
- 9:12and I caught Xenna rolling her eyes. Then before
- 9:15we could react, sparks flickered across a nearby
- 9:20tree trunk. And Pine Wisp launched himself into
- 9:27the air, flipping into a perfect arc before landing
- 9:30on a branch a few meters ahead. Its horns glinted
- 9:37in the light of Nibiru's three moons and two
- 9:42suns, and the flame's longest back pulsed like
- 9:45a heartbeat, the redstone, like streaks, seemed
- 9:48to glow brighter, almost as if it was excited
- 9:51to be chased. I think it wants us to follow it,
- 9:55Luna said, or it wants us, or it wants to lead
- 10:01us into trouble. Either way, we're doing it,
- 10:04Xena said. We followed carefully to keep our
- 10:08movements slow. The wisp darted ahead, leaving
- 10:15faint glowing paw prints in the soft moss. Each
- 10:20time we thought we'd caught up, it would vanish
- 10:23into a tangle of roots or a leap onto a higher
- 10:26branch, tail glowing, horns catching the light.
- 10:29I noticed then that the sparks on its back were
- 10:32more than just fire. Tiny fragments of heated
- 10:36stone embedded in its fur, giving it a molten,
- 10:40living texture. It paused briefly on a broad
- 10:45branch, looking down at us with those amber -green
- 10:49eyes, as if daring us to try and climb after
- 10:53it. I felt my chest tighten with awe and a little
- 10:56nervousness. Nibiru was full of wonders, but
- 10:59few had ever made me feel this small and this
- 11:02alive at the same time. Then, with a playful
- 11:05trill and a flick of its tail, it disappeared
- 11:08completely into the mist of the deeper forest.
- 11:12A faint green glow lingered for a heartbeat before
- 11:15vanishing. We stood there, listening to the echo
- 11:20of its laughter, mingling with the distant crackle
- 11:24of flame. I think it's trying to teach us something,
- 11:32Luna said, or just shove off. Xena scoffed. I
- 11:37smiled, tucking my data chip safely back into
- 11:39my pack. Maybe a bit of both. Either way, we're
- 11:42not done yet. And with that, we stepped deeper
- 11:46into the ember wood following the faint trails
- 11:49of fire and light, ready for whatever mischief
- 11:52the Pine Wisp had in store. I knew if I wanted
- 12:00to catch the Pine Wisp, I had to get him to come
- 12:04down somehow. And then it hit me. They're meat
- 12:08eaters. They love the pods of the carnivora plant,
- 12:12and we had found a few earlier, so I decided
- 12:14that I was going to try and lure him down with
- 12:18the carnivora plant. I held my breath as the
- 12:23pine wisp crouched over the glyphid, its amber
- 12:25-green eyes flicking between the meaty carnivora
- 12:28pods and the trap itself. Its tail flicked lazily,
- 12:32flames pulsing along the stone, red streaks of
- 12:36its back. And for a heartbeat, I worried it might
- 12:39sense the danger and bolt. But it was too focused
- 12:42on the food. Each careful nibble brought it closer
- 12:44to the glyphid. Mechanism, the trap, I had painstakingly
- 12:48prepared. I had tested it with smaller creatures
- 12:51before, but nothing like this. The pine wisp
- 12:54was fast, clever, and mischievous. Wrong, one
- 12:59wrong step, and it could vanish into the ember
- 13:02wood, leaving me empty -handed. Then, as it reached
- 13:06for the final piece, inside the glyphid, I triggered
- 13:10the mechanism with a quiet click. The cage -like
- 13:13field of shimmering energy enveloped the creature.
- 13:17For a moment it froze, flames rippling across
- 13:19its back, horns glinting in the twin sun's and
- 13:23three moon's light, and then it let out a sharp
- 13:26thrill of surprise. I held my ground, careful
- 13:29not to startle it further. Xena and Luna emerged
- 13:33from the trees, eyes wide. You actually did it,
- 13:40Zelle! You got it !" Xenna said. And look! It
- 13:45looks furious! Look at those flames! Luna said.
- 13:50The pine wisp placed the paste within the glyphid.
- 13:54Tail flickering, sparks trailing behind its movements.
- 13:57But it didn't try to break free. Its amber -green
- 13:59eyes studied us. Intelligent and wary, but also
- 14:03somehow curious. I approached slowly, speaking
- 14:06softly. It's okay, I just want to observe you,
- 14:09I won't hurt you. For a moment, it seemed to
- 14:12consider my words, head tilting, horns catching
- 14:14the light, like two tiny sentinels. Then it settled
- 14:19down slightly, still alert, but no longer panicked.
- 14:22The carnivora pods had worked as bait, yes, but
- 14:26I realized this wasn't just about hunger, it
- 14:29was about trust. The pine wisp might be mischievous
- 14:32and wild, but it wasn't stupid. It could tell
- 14:34the difference between danger and careful curiosity.
- 14:38I exchanged a look with Xenna and Luna. We had
- 14:42done it. We had captured the pine wisp not with
- 14:45brute force, but with patience, cleverness, and
- 14:49respect. And as the small creature glowed softly
- 14:52in the glyphid, I felt a thrill of triumph. Mixed
- 14:56with awe, on Nibiru, even a capture could feel
- 14:58like a privilege. When I finished recording the
- 15:07Pine Wisp's capture data, I made my way up the
- 15:09steep stone path to a redoring study. The air
- 15:12was still thick with the scent of resin and ember
- 15:15from the ember wood grove. The small glyphid
- 15:18in my arms shimmered faintly. It's tell flick
- 15:21sparks that died before they could touch the
- 15:24ground. I mean, the glyph inside the glyphid,
- 15:27its tail, you know. Inside, the warm, lit cabin
- 15:31orient sat at his desk, surrounded by glowing
- 15:34data screens, the faint hum of the academy's
- 15:37filled network filling the room. He looked up
- 15:40when I entered, eyes instantly drawn to the creature,
- 15:46nestled inside the glyphid in my hand. Well,
- 15:53he said, folding his hands. That's not something
- 15:55you see wandering near the Academy every day."
- 15:59I nodded, still watching the pine wisp. It had
- 16:02finally stopped moving and was staring at Orion
- 16:05unblinkingly. He had my data chip, I began. I
- 16:09thought he was just another ember wood spirit,
- 16:11but he mesmerized me. He looks like an earth
- 16:14pine marten. But with stone -red fur climbing
- 16:19up his back, glowing like embers, and those horns,
- 16:22they shimmer with his when he's curious. Orion
- 16:26leaned forward slightly, described the temper
- 16:28it meant. Playful, mischievous, I said, smiling
- 16:31faintly. He likes to steal shiny things and meaty
- 16:35carnivora pods, but he isn't hostile. More like
- 16:39he's testing us, seeing how far he can go before
- 16:42we can catch on. Interesting, Orion tapped a
- 16:45note into his terminal. That matches no current
- 16:49registry record. You may have encountered a new
- 16:51variant. Perhaps even a proto -glyph species,
- 16:56native to Nibiru's Emberwood regions. He paused
- 17:03and gave a slight nod. Very well, Steliferous.
- 17:06Submit your findings to the Luan Archive, then
- 17:08take him home. Observe his behavior over the
- 17:10next few cycles. Diet, environment preference,
- 17:14glyph response patterns. Report again at week's
- 17:19end. Yes, sir, I said. As I turned to leave,
- 17:24the pine wisp lifted its head and gave a soft
- 17:27chirp. Eyes clenched in gold like burning sap,
- 17:30Orion smiled faintly. He's already chosen you,
- 17:32I think. Outside the forest, wind brushed through
- 17:36the high branches carrying with it the scent
- 17:39of pine smoke and wild nectar. Xena and Luna
- 17:43were waiting near the trail. Luna reached out,
- 17:45letting the creature sniff her hand through the
- 17:48glyphid. He's kind of cute for a fire beast,"
- 17:52she said softly. He's more than that, I murmured,
- 17:58holding the glyphic close. He's clever. He knew
- 18:01I was trying to catch him and walked right into
- 18:03it anyway. I think he wanted to come with us.
- 18:07The pine was trilled again, brighter this time,
- 18:10the flames on his back flickering with a pulse
- 18:13-like rhythm as he began the long walk. we began
- 18:17the long walk home, the path lit faintly under
- 18:19his glow, as if the forest itself was acknowledgingly
- 18:24the new bond forming, one spark at a time. And
- 18:31in that moment I knew without a doubt everything
- 18:33would be okay. The Emberwood's mischievous fire
- 18:36beast had chosen me, and somehow I had chosen
- 18:38him. And when we got home, I sat next right beside
- 18:43him, letting him explore his new home. I realized
- 18:46that this was only the beginning of the adventure.
- 18:50Curiosity and a little bit of chaos were coming
- 18:52with him. But for the first time, it felt like
- 18:55home could handle it. And with a small trill
- 18:58from the pine wisp, sparks softly faded to embers
- 19:02along its back, I smiled, feeling a deep certainty
- 19:06settle over me. We were both exactly where we
- 19:09were meant to be. I woke up in the early morning,
- 19:14shivering under my blanket. The cabin was quiet,
- 19:16except for the wind brushing against the window
- 19:19panes. The air had that crisp bit of dawn. The
- 19:24kind that seeps into your bones, no matter how
- 19:26tightly you wrap yourself. Pinewisp was curled
- 19:29up near the hearth, his tiny horns barely visible
- 19:33against his dark fur. His tail flickered once,
- 19:36a spark of soft whoosh -whoosh, and then, before
- 19:40I could even blink. The little fire starter decided
- 19:43to help, and in an instant his entire back flared
- 19:47to life, causing the room to light up in an orange
- 19:52glow. The heat hit me like a wave, and my blanket
- 19:55smoked before I could react. Ah, pine wisp! I
- 19:59yelped. Falling out of bed, my hair stood on
- 20:03end, my sleeves were singed at the edges, and
- 20:06I must have looked like some half -burnt forest
- 20:08ghoul, stumbling into the hallway. Xena burst
- 20:12out laughing from the kitchen. Stars above Stella
- 20:15Ferris, did you fight a campfire in your sleep?
- 20:21Apparently my new roommate thinks I am one. I
- 20:23groaned, padding at my still warm shirt as Pine
- 20:27Whisp sat proudly on the rug, his back still
- 20:30blazing, tail swishing with satisfaction. Luna
- 20:34peeked out around the corner, trying not to laugh.
- 20:37Well, at least he's thoughtful. He didn't mean
- 20:40to roast you, just toast you. I gave her a look
- 20:44that could have melted ice. Very funny. But I
- 20:48couldn't stay mad. The little creature tilted
- 20:50his head, eyes glowing like tiny embers, and
- 20:53gave a soft, guilty trail, almost apologetic.
- 20:57I sighed and crouched down, rubbing the top of
- 20:59his head gently. It's okay, buddy. You meant
- 21:03well. Just maybe next time warm the air, not
- 21:06the human. He chirped again, tail flicking and
- 21:10the flames along his back slowly dimming to a
- 21:12warm, harmless glow. The morning light finally
- 21:16broke through the windows, casting golden streaks
- 21:19across the cabin walls and a set of steaming
- 21:22mugs of pine teeth on the table. Luna opened
- 21:25the shutters and pine wisps hopped into my lap.
- 21:30Curling up with a soft hum of contentment. And
- 21:34though I smelled faintly of charcoal and regret,
- 21:37I couldn't help but laugh. This was life with
- 21:40a mischievous ember wood creature. Unpredictable,
- 21:43chaotic, and somehow comforting.
