- 1:06Speaker 1: a Success to I Love That title and founder and
- 1:09Speaker 1: executive in charge of Unrivaled Magazine one Robin Charles living
- 1:15Speaker 1: yea thank you for having me. That was an amazing introduction. Yeah,
- 1:21Speaker 1: I know you are amazing with those introductions. I was
- 1:23Speaker 1: so excited about it. Um, I do want to thank
- 1:26Speaker 1: you for having me. This is definitely a full circle moment.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Talk about manifestation. Awesome your Louisiana girl, Can I understand that? Okay,
- 1:36Speaker 1: talk about that, talk about those humble beginnings. And we
- 1:39Speaker 1: had a lot to talk about the magazine. We're gonna
- 1:41Speaker 1: talk about the book which I read this morning, and
- 1:44Speaker 1: my staff I always going, what should you? God bless
- 1:47Speaker 1: me with the ability to read, uh and I take
- 1:50Speaker 1: advantage of it. I have a really good memory, so
- 1:52Speaker 1: I um, I usually try to read a book like
- 1:55Speaker 1: the day before or the day of because I get
- 1:57Speaker 1: up at I this morning got for like three thirties,
- 1:59Speaker 1: so my body wake up. And so once I said
- 2:02Speaker 1: wake up, I have two options to Lanta bit and
- 2:04Speaker 1: wondering why I'm not getting up, I get up. So
- 2:07Speaker 1: I decided just to get up. And so one of
- 2:09Speaker 1: the things that my agenda was to read your book.
- 2:11Speaker 1: And uh, so that's the storyline is fresh in my memory.
- 2:14Speaker 1: So let's talk about those humble beginnings in Louisiana. Yes,
- 2:18Speaker 1: so I am originally from St. Martinville, Louisiana, a very
- 2:23Speaker 1: small historical town in Louisiana, which is about twenty five
- 2:28Speaker 1: minutes outside of Latinette, Louisiana. And I was born out
- 2:35Speaker 1: of wed locks to two parents that did not receive
- 2:40Speaker 1: a high school diploma. UM. I grew up in a
- 2:43Speaker 1: single parent home, and over the course of the years,
- 2:48Speaker 1: my mom began to date and one of her boyfriends,
- 2:54Speaker 1: when I was about eight or nine years old, he
- 2:56Speaker 1: texted me inappropriately and that kind of shaped my early
- 3:03Speaker 1: years into UM, leading me to become looking for love
- 3:08Speaker 1: and all the wrong places, and even just not having
- 3:12Speaker 1: UM my own father and the home led me to
- 3:16Speaker 1: looking for love and all the wrong places. And UM
- 3:20Speaker 1: I began to date older guys, talk to older guys,
- 3:24Speaker 1: and at the age of fourteen, I became pregnant with
- 3:27Speaker 1: my first child. Okay, and I was only a freshman
- 3:33Speaker 1: in high school. Gave birth to my first child at
- 3:35Speaker 1: the age of fifteen. Okay. You usually at that point
- 3:39Speaker 1: it goes wrong, Everything goes wrong. You know for some
- 3:42Speaker 1: of your young He already said you your your mom,
- 3:45Speaker 1: your single parent mom, your your what was your father
- 3:48Speaker 1: in your life at the time. He was in my life. Um,
- 3:51Speaker 1: he just did not live with us, but he was
- 3:54Speaker 1: in my life. Okay when that happened. What was his
- 3:56Speaker 1: conversation with you? What was your parents in general conversation
- 4:00Speaker 1: to you when you announced to them that you were pregnant.
- 4:03Speaker 1: You were just fifteen years old. Very disappointed, very disappointed. Um, basically,
- 4:11Speaker 1: you know, basically, you have ruined your chances to do
- 4:15Speaker 1: anything in life. You have ruined your chances to become successful.
- 4:19Speaker 1: That's what I was told by everyone around me that, Um,
- 4:23Speaker 1: you definitely are not going to finish high school. You
- 4:26Speaker 1: can forget about college. You're never going to become anything.
- 4:30Speaker 1: You're just gonna stay in this small town and not exhale.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Is what I was told, um, by other family members,
- 4:38Speaker 1: people in the same town that I live in. That's
- 4:40Speaker 1: how that conversation went. That's a blast of motivation right there,
- 4:47Speaker 1: right and you're telling you, okay, you know, uh, close
- 4:52Speaker 1: up tent, you're done, You're done. You don't wear fair Okay,
- 4:56Speaker 1: have a couple more whatever, You're not gonna make it.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Get your g e d Okay, stop going to high school.
- 5:02Speaker 1: You guys, stay home and uh take care of this kid.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Get your job at some small department store and little
- 5:09Speaker 1: check to check. That was that was the That was
- 5:11Speaker 1: the speech. That was the motivating speeches you heard. That's
- 5:14Speaker 1: what I heard. But what I got from it I
- 5:17Speaker 1: use that as a few to my fire to become successful.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I used that to say, hey, this is what you
- 5:25Speaker 1: think it's going to happen, but no, this is not
- 5:28Speaker 1: the final destination for my life. I'm going to turn
- 5:31Speaker 1: it around. And with that, I was able to graduate
- 5:34Speaker 1: from high school with honors on time I walked with
- 5:37Speaker 1: the class. I had a three year old by the
- 5:40Speaker 1: time I graduated from high school. But I graduated, went
- 5:43Speaker 1: on to college. Let's just a little bit. Okay, how
- 5:47Speaker 1: did you balance that? Okay, you said, I'm a graduated
- 5:50Speaker 1: with honors because I don't like for people who just
- 5:52Speaker 1: fly past their story, because, like you know, I gave
- 5:56Speaker 1: fifty as a kid, and I graduated and I went
- 5:59Speaker 1: to a three year old on my hip when I
- 6:02Speaker 1: went across stage. Okay, how did you do that? How
- 6:06Speaker 1: did you you had this wave of negativity? You no
- 6:09Speaker 1: one teaches you how to be a parent, nobody teaches
- 6:12Speaker 1: you how to balance life. And you're young, okay, and
- 6:16Speaker 1: I'm assuming that the child's father was Was he in
- 6:19Speaker 1: your life? Was he in a child's life? Yes? Cool?
- 6:23Speaker 1: So with that being said, how did you accomplish it?
- 6:26Speaker 1: How did you grow yourself? Oh? My god? Yeah, it
- 6:30Speaker 1: definitely was not easy by any means. Yet, like you said,
- 6:34Speaker 1: you hear the success, but in between story is what
- 6:38Speaker 1: really matters. It was not easy. Um, after having my daughter,
- 6:43Speaker 1: I fell into a depression because with her father, he
- 6:48Speaker 1: was also abusive. And this is also domestic violence awareness
- 6:52Speaker 1: much so I do want to touch on that as well.
- 6:54Speaker 1: He was abusive verbally and physically, so that kind of
- 6:58Speaker 1: put me in a depression. So there are plenty times
- 7:01Speaker 1: where I even contemplated suicide. So it took me to
- 7:06Speaker 1: really dig into my relationship with God. That's what kept
- 7:10Speaker 1: me going. I knew that if I prayed, God would
- 7:14Speaker 1: get me through the situation. So while I'm still going
- 7:18Speaker 1: to high school, balancing being a mother, dealing with dis
- 7:22Speaker 1: abusive relationship, the only thing I could turn to was God.
- 7:27Speaker 1: So at the same time, I'm smiling, I'm going to school,
- 7:30Speaker 1: I'm making your grades, and then when I'm alone, I'm
- 7:34Speaker 1: you know, battling these demons. So I had no choice
- 7:37Speaker 1: but to you know, dig in and pull my relationship
- 7:40Speaker 1: with God. It's the only thing to get me through
- 7:42Speaker 1: these times. Okay, cool, you got through the times to
- 7:44Speaker 1: got a degree in sociology, which I am a fan
- 7:47Speaker 1: of because my minor is sociology and my degree is
- 7:49Speaker 1: in mathematics, and sociology changed my life. In your book,
- 7:54Speaker 1: You Can Be a Success, to you talk about how
- 7:56Speaker 1: sociology changed your whole perspective on life. Let's talk about
- 7:59Speaker 1: that a little bit from your perspective. Yes, absolutely, it
- 8:03Speaker 1: caused me to examine some things about myself, UM, my
- 8:10Speaker 1: interactions with others, how and why I interact in a
- 8:13Speaker 1: certain way? What others how and why others interact in
- 8:15Speaker 1: a certain way with myself? And UM, I had a
- 8:19Speaker 1: work study while in college with Big Brothers six Sisters
- 8:23Speaker 1: of the Kadiana which mentors we get volunteers to mentor
- 8:28Speaker 1: at risk youth And that was the first job I
- 8:30Speaker 1: got out of college. And with that degree, UM, I
- 8:34Speaker 1: was able to to just connect with other UM kids
- 8:39Speaker 1: that were at youth, at risk youth and you know,
- 8:42Speaker 1: help them find their ways through mentoring with other mentors.
- 8:48Speaker 1: And I think sociology, psychology, just anything in social services
- 8:53Speaker 1: is very needed. You may not make the most money,
- 8:56Speaker 1: but it's the difference that you make in the lives
- 8:59Speaker 1: of others that's most important. Before we go to we
- 9:02Speaker 1: got a minute left in this break, tell us why
- 9:04Speaker 1: did you write the book? Or you can be a
- 9:06Speaker 1: success too. Absolutely, Um. As I mentioned earlier, you know,
- 9:12Speaker 1: I was told that, hey, these things happened to you,
- 9:16Speaker 1: you cannot go on to achieve anything great. You cannot
- 9:19Speaker 1: go on to be successful. So I wrote this book
- 9:22Speaker 1: as an inspiration to others and especially other young women
- 9:26Speaker 1: that may be going through something as as a young mother. Um,
- 9:30Speaker 1: somebody that may be addicted to drug, somebody that may
- 9:33Speaker 1: be depressed. This is not your final destination. You can
- 9:37Speaker 1: still go on to overcome these things and become successful. Yes,
- 9:41Speaker 1: you can become a success to regardless or despite of
- 9:45Speaker 1: your current situation. That's amazing. UM. I met this young
- 9:49Speaker 1: lady at the Neighborhood Awards, you know, on a on
- 9:52Speaker 1: an Instagram post. She wanted to find out how she
- 9:55Speaker 1: could be on the media on a on the red
- 9:58Speaker 1: carpet at the time. Was it was RESPONSI so the
- 10:00Speaker 1: blue carpet. So we'll be right back to talk with
- 10:02Speaker 1: more with Robin Charles living Up. She's de founding, the
- 10:05Speaker 1: executive in charge of Unraveled magazine one, and the author
- 10:08Speaker 1: of the hot new book You Can Be as Success Too.
- 10:16Speaker 1: We'll be right back with more from mar Sean McDonald
- 10:19Speaker 1: the moneymaking conversations. Don't touch that down. My next guest
- 10:25Speaker 1: where she's my guess. She's on the line right now.
- 10:27Speaker 1: I'm just reading some old credits. For the past five years,
- 10:29Speaker 1: has made Unrivaled magazine the premier media outlet for covering
- 10:33Speaker 1: uplifting entertainment, news and events. Her goal is to provide
- 10:37Speaker 1: that both uplifting and events to their audience. And it's
- 10:41Speaker 1: about it really important that I have people like this
- 10:43Speaker 1: on the show like I had my previous guests. Is
- 10:45Speaker 1: about when you're out there in the business world, just
- 10:49Speaker 1: you just don't know who to turn to because sometimes
- 10:53Speaker 1: which sels so good on television was sels so good
- 10:55Speaker 1: on the media subtimes is bad news. And when you
- 10:58Speaker 1: try to sell good news a lot of times hits
- 11:01Speaker 1: the back story. So when I meet the individual who
- 11:03Speaker 1: I have to believe has to overcome the odds as
- 11:06Speaker 1: a young person and able to tell a story, I
- 11:09Speaker 1: have to bring him on my show. They're using an example,
- 11:11Speaker 1: not just saying that she's unique, because there's a lot
- 11:14Speaker 1: of successful stories like that. But what happens is the
- 11:16Speaker 1: bad stories dominate. The bad stories, say, hey, when something
- 11:20Speaker 1: bad happens to you when you're a teen, a teen
- 11:23Speaker 1: mom throwing the tie, that's it. The boat is taken
- 11:28Speaker 1: on water and you can't plug it up. You're done.
- 11:32Speaker 1: And so, my guests, she decided to not listen to them,
- 11:35Speaker 1: you know, she decided to even though there was disappointment
- 11:39Speaker 1: from her parents, like I would have I would be
- 11:41Speaker 1: disappointed my daughter would have told me that. But what
- 11:43Speaker 1: you do is you realize that because as a parent,
- 11:46Speaker 1: all you want in life is for your children to
- 11:49Speaker 1: have a better life than you. All you want in
- 11:51Speaker 1: life is for your kids to outlive you. You don't
- 11:54Speaker 1: want to you don't want your kids to die before you.
- 11:56Speaker 1: You don't want your kids to be homeless and you
- 11:59Speaker 1: still live in the home. That's not the goal as
- 12:01Speaker 1: a parent. So when the parent receives um information that's
- 12:06Speaker 1: not the future they projected for their child, it's gonna
- 12:09Speaker 1: be received negatively. So my guests, Robin Charles living when
- 12:13Speaker 1: you got that negative story from the parents, let's go
- 12:15Speaker 1: back to the core of your existence. How did you
- 12:19Speaker 1: get past that and what did you tell them? What
- 12:22Speaker 1: reassurance did you tell them? Or did you have to
- 12:25Speaker 1: just show them that your story was going to be
- 12:27Speaker 1: different As a fifteen year old I'm pregnant, uh, freshman
- 12:32Speaker 1: in high school? How did you change their narrative? Yeah?
- 12:36Speaker 1: Basically I have to show them by just continuing to
- 12:40Speaker 1: go to school, continuing to bring home good grades, continuing
- 12:44Speaker 1: to to not go down the path of you know, Okay,
- 12:49Speaker 1: now I have this baby, I'm not going to go
- 12:51Speaker 1: out and continue to have more babies. I'm not gonna
- 12:54Speaker 1: go out and hang on the streets saying get into
- 12:57Speaker 1: other types of trouble. So just showing them at hey, okay,
- 13:00Speaker 1: this happened, but okay, I'm gonna go down the rights
- 13:04Speaker 1: path going forward, and I am going to make something
- 13:07Speaker 1: out of my life. What sacrifices did you make in
- 13:09Speaker 1: your social life or personally? What what did you what
- 13:12Speaker 1: did you have to stop doing? Because I'm sure being
- 13:14Speaker 1: a team mom, you couldn't do a lot of teens
- 13:16Speaker 1: stuff anymore. Oh my god, it's like you you kind
- 13:21Speaker 1: of feel like an outcast while a lot of your
- 13:23Speaker 1: friends are like just going and do wild, crazy teenage things. Um,
- 13:28Speaker 1: you know, going to a lot of the football games.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Just getting care free in general. Um, that's no longer
- 13:33Speaker 1: an option when you become a mother and um, responsible
- 13:38Speaker 1: for someone else that you have to think about. Are
- 13:42Speaker 1: you setting in an example a good example? Now you
- 13:45Speaker 1: can't just okay, now I'm care free. I'm only sixteen,
- 13:49Speaker 1: fifteen years old. I'm care free. I can just go
- 13:51Speaker 1: out with my friends just be wild and crazy. No,
- 13:54Speaker 1: I could not do that anymore. It's okay. Now I
- 13:57Speaker 1: have a daughter, I have to watch what I do.
- 14:00Speaker 1: I have to watch my image and the things I do.
- 14:03Speaker 1: That's the mind frame that I had at that young
- 14:06Speaker 1: age going forward. So in the essence, that kind of
- 14:10Speaker 1: help in maturity in a way of becoming a mother
- 14:13Speaker 1: at such a young age. Right, And I like, I like,
- 14:16Speaker 1: I'm glad you're stating that now your book You can
- 14:18Speaker 1: be a success to a motivational success A motivational success
- 14:22Speaker 1: guide how to overcome adversity and achieve goals? How do
- 14:26Speaker 1: you achieve goals? Let's talk about that. There a lot
- 14:28Speaker 1: of people we're trying. You've talked enough about it. Her
- 14:32Speaker 1: life as a single mom, my life as a let's say,
- 14:35Speaker 1: single mom as a team mom. Uh come from pare?
- 14:38Speaker 1: Why is she on the show? Well, first of all,
- 14:40Speaker 1: she's on the show one reason because, first of all,
- 14:43Speaker 1: she understands that I will not stop. I will not
- 14:47Speaker 1: be stopped. And I always tell people that we allowed
- 14:50Speaker 1: excuses or setbacks or as they always say, when you
- 14:54Speaker 1: fall down, I don't want to get up, and I'm
- 14:56Speaker 1: just telling people you have to get up. Now. How
- 14:58Speaker 1: do you set goals? How achieve goals? Let's talk about
- 15:01Speaker 1: that real quick. To my listener, absolutely absolutely, it starts
- 15:06Speaker 1: with with your mindset. And I know you hear a
- 15:08Speaker 1: lot of people say that, but the mindset is very important.
- 15:12Speaker 1: And once you know what you want to achieve, you
- 15:15Speaker 1: have to map out a plan to get it done.
- 15:18Speaker 1: It's not just gonna magically appear. You have to be dedicated.
- 15:22Speaker 1: You you start off with I love smart goals. I
- 15:25Speaker 1: mentioned that in my book UM Specific, Measurable, Attainable Relevant
- 15:30Speaker 1: in time bound. You have to break down these goals.
- 15:33Speaker 1: If you have something really major that you want to achieve,
- 15:37Speaker 1: let's say six months from now, you break it down. Okay,
- 15:40Speaker 1: so it's going to start off with me having to
- 15:44Speaker 1: do this daily. I'm gonna have to change this habit daily.
- 15:47Speaker 1: I'm going to have to do this weekly, okay, and
- 15:49Speaker 1: then I'm gonna have to callie up all of these
- 15:53Speaker 1: things that I've been doing in the changes I've made,
- 15:55Speaker 1: and see how far I have gotten at the end
- 15:57Speaker 1: of the month. Okay, So what have I achieved and
- 16:01Speaker 1: what do I need to achieve to get this done
- 16:03Speaker 1: within six months? So you you break it down. A
- 16:06Speaker 1: lot of people become intimidated with achieving goals because it
- 16:10Speaker 1: just seems so far fetched, but it's not when you
- 16:12Speaker 1: actually break it down and make it easier to attain.
- 16:17Speaker 1: You know, goals are really interesting because a lot of
- 16:19Speaker 1: people feel that when you reach your goal, they don't
- 16:22Speaker 1: know how to reach set another goal. It's really that's
- 16:25Speaker 1: the frustrating part about success is that it just never ends.
- 16:30Speaker 1: You know, you have to keep you have to keep
- 16:31Speaker 1: motivating yourself to the next the next goal, and the goal.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Unfortunately it's bigger. How do you talk how do you
- 16:41Speaker 1: tell you talk about that in your book? Yes, like,
- 16:44Speaker 1: once you achieve something, okay, yeah, scress that off. Okay,
- 16:48Speaker 1: so what next? You always want to be thinking for
- 16:52Speaker 1: the head. You should never become comfortable with where you are. Yes,
- 16:57Speaker 1: enjoy the moment, but don't become complacent. Don't be like, Okay, yeah,
- 17:02Speaker 1: I achieved this, I'm good. I'm just going to sit
- 17:05Speaker 1: back and cross my legs and not do anything. There's
- 17:09Speaker 1: always more to achieve. So that's what I like to
- 17:12Speaker 1: mention and motivate others to always be thinking greater in
- 17:17Speaker 1: the sense of greater Yeah, different years of really identifiable
- 17:20Speaker 1: titles in your book, Overcoming adversities, identifying your purpose, finding
- 17:25Speaker 1: ways to stay motivated, fundamentals of goal setting, making sacrifices,
- 17:31Speaker 1: be fearless, be relentless. Knowledge is power, the important of persistence.
- 17:37Speaker 1: That's when I come into the book and then ask
- 17:39Speaker 1: for help. Show up and show up. Let's talk about that, right,
- 17:42Speaker 1: the show up and show out, just to be like
- 17:46Speaker 1: your kids will show out. You have to spanker, but
- 17:49Speaker 1: you said, in this situation in the business world, you
- 17:51Speaker 1: should show up and show out. Talk to us about that. Yes,
- 17:55Speaker 1: I end the book with that chapter, and it's basically
- 17:58Speaker 1: just saying, Okay, now that you have learned how to
- 18:00Speaker 1: achieve goals, how to set and achieve goals, you've learned
- 18:05Speaker 1: to how to figure out your purpose and all that
- 18:07Speaker 1: good stuff. But what are you going to do with it? Okay,
- 18:10Speaker 1: you have to get out there and network. You have
- 18:13Speaker 1: to get out there and meet people. There are plenty
- 18:16Speaker 1: times when you're gonna be tired, you're not going to
- 18:19Speaker 1: be motivated, but you have to show up. There were
- 18:23Speaker 1: times when I didn't want to go to certain events.
- 18:25Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, I'm tired, I don't feel like going,
- 18:28Speaker 1: and I would always be glad that I did because
- 18:30Speaker 1: I would end up meeting great people, making new contacts
- 18:34Speaker 1: and the show and our part is just walking into
- 18:37Speaker 1: the room owning it, being that that person that's unforgettable,
- 18:42Speaker 1: you know, having the right attire, the business attire, the
- 18:46Speaker 1: small the voice, just just being rememberable. Well, I'll be
- 18:50Speaker 1: remiss if I don't talk about your magazine that you
- 18:52Speaker 1: found it and you started Unrivaled magazine. Want tell us
- 18:56Speaker 1: about that magazine? Why was it important because it's five
- 18:59Speaker 1: years old? Correct? Yes? Yes, Why was it important to
- 19:02Speaker 1: launch the magazine and what is the future of that magazine? Yes?
- 19:06Speaker 1: So it was important because I wanted to motivate others
- 19:11Speaker 1: by sharing entertaining, uplifting news. There's a lot of media
- 19:17Speaker 1: outlets that share gossip, the latest, this mess and everything,
- 19:21Speaker 1: and that's fine, but that's not something that I wanted
- 19:24Speaker 1: to do. I wanted to be the one to share. Okay,
- 19:28Speaker 1: this person started a business, or this person is now
- 19:32Speaker 1: Grammy Award winning singer, how did they become that? Um
- 19:37Speaker 1: share shares. You know someone that's looking up to you,
- 19:41Speaker 1: what advice do you have for them that are looking
- 19:44Speaker 1: to be in your shoes? And the future of the magazine.
- 19:48Speaker 1: I want to continue to grow it on a larger
- 19:51Speaker 1: platform so that I can reach more people and just
- 19:54Speaker 1: share these amazing stories. It's in a short note because
- 19:58Speaker 1: I'm wrapping up the wrap up, and I mean staying
- 20:01Speaker 1: true to your purpose. I thought that was important in
- 20:04Speaker 1: a short capsule. Tell us exactly what that is. Stay
- 20:07Speaker 1: true to your purpose, yes, absolutely, Just know what it
- 20:13Speaker 1: is that you are supposed to be doing. Identify your
- 20:16Speaker 1: purpose and stay true to it. Means you live and
- 20:21Speaker 1: breed everything around it. You. You are aware of everything
- 20:25Speaker 1: you're doing, everything you take part in it aligns with
- 20:28Speaker 1: your purpose. Do not listen to what anyone else thinks
- 20:33Speaker 1: you're supposed to be doing or says that you're supposed
- 20:35Speaker 1: to be doing. It's all about you and your purpose.
- 20:39Speaker 1: You have to walk in that you know and not
- 20:42Speaker 1: have anyone interfere with that. Robin Charles Living, I would
