- 2:07Speaker 1: you okay? Well, okay, now you're not You're not in
- 2:09Speaker 1: the same room. So what cities are each one are
- 2:11Speaker 1: you calling from Mario. I'm calling from Detroit, Detroit, Michigan.
- 2:17Speaker 1: And Mom, I'm calling from Charlotte, North Carolina. That's Charlotte
- 2:22Speaker 1: destroct some good eating in Detroit to try this being reftalized.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I know about that. And you know you in in
- 2:29Speaker 1: brick City there in Charlotte, now Charlotte, North Carolina. I
- 2:32Speaker 1: love that city, one of my favorite cities there. So
- 2:37Speaker 1: it's a fun place. So here's there. Here's the fun
- 2:39Speaker 1: thing about it. First of all, thank you for coming
- 2:41Speaker 1: on Money Making Conversation. Uh, thank you for having First
- 2:44Speaker 1: of all, I just wanna let you know this show
- 2:45Speaker 1: is is your show. So know that this relationship that
- 2:48Speaker 1: we're developing here is something that you can call on. Mario,
- 2:52Speaker 1: consider me like a big brother, Okay, a big brother,
- 2:55Speaker 1: you know if you need something and uh, Mom, I'm
- 2:58Speaker 1: calling your mom, call me your friend, Okay, when you
- 3:01Speaker 1: need something happening and promoting and things like that. That's
- 3:04Speaker 1: what I developed this platform. And uh, it's taken off
- 3:07Speaker 1: and as all, everybody's calling the show. But here's here's
- 3:10Speaker 1: the fun part about it. So Mario, I'm reading your
- 3:12Speaker 1: bio and you play basketball in Alaska. Sure, Okay, now
- 3:20Speaker 1: you know, you know Mario, you know, I just don't
- 3:24Speaker 1: pitch it. I gotta see it like this, Black people
- 3:27Speaker 1: lay basketball in Alaska. A lot of people say that.
- 3:34Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. You know, you go, you
- 3:36Speaker 1: want two state championships in Alaska. So so so now
- 3:40Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you here's the funny point. But it's
- 3:41Speaker 1: two states I want to visit. Alaska is one of
- 3:44Speaker 1: those states. And I think I'm gonna go there and
- 3:47Speaker 1: uh next year doing a youth survey. So tell me
- 3:51Speaker 1: the the Why what would I get the experience when
- 3:53Speaker 1: I come to Alaska? Why is such a beautiful state.
- 3:57Speaker 1: I'll tell you that the first time you come to
- 3:58Speaker 1: the last day, you gotta do the crew. You gotta do.
- 4:01Speaker 1: You gotta do the cruise that goes through uh the mountains,
- 4:05Speaker 1: the glaciers. Um see all the wildlife and the beautiful
- 4:10Speaker 1: scenery in Alaska. That's that's what we're known for. That's
- 4:13Speaker 1: the that's the best part of Alaska. So I definitely
- 4:15Speaker 1: recommend that. And then um, just go out and do
- 4:18Speaker 1: some good food. You know, We've got good food that
- 4:20Speaker 1: all types of different religions out there and culture. So
- 4:23Speaker 1: you know, the food was very diverse out there, and
- 4:25Speaker 1: it's actually pretty good. Food and cruise are two things
- 4:28Speaker 1: I recommend. Cool Ah, Marie, how did you get your
- 4:31Speaker 1: son up to Alaska Military Military? My husband was in
- 4:40Speaker 1: the Military Air Force and so we were there and
- 4:43Speaker 1: I played the fourth so um Gosper Mario was born
- 4:47Speaker 1: that and we raised both of our kids there. M
- 4:51Speaker 1: never as you this now, you know, being a mom
- 4:54Speaker 1: and being and and and and watching your son, you know,
- 4:58Speaker 1: because he was was in Alaska, then he made the decision.
- 5:02Speaker 1: I want to talk a little bit about that. We're
- 5:03Speaker 1: gonna get to the book is the book ABC is
- 5:06Speaker 1: a basketball which is really important to the youth of America.
- 5:10Speaker 1: But I also want to talk about the journey because
- 5:13Speaker 1: when you when you when you an athlete, because you're
- 5:15Speaker 1: you're you know, you're McDonald's all American Mario, you go
- 5:20Speaker 1: to a school like Kansas and then you in ther
- 5:24Speaker 1: way from your family? How did that affect because your
- 5:26Speaker 1: father was your high school coach? Correct, how did that?
- 5:30Speaker 1: How did that affect? How did that transition happen to you?
- 5:33Speaker 1: Because that you have all that all that that that protection,
- 5:36Speaker 1: all that close mentoring and all that you know he
- 5:39Speaker 1: has your back. And then the coach of bill self,
- 5:42Speaker 1: I believe it's the coach of a cancer university recruited
- 5:45Speaker 1: you to go to Kansas. What did you have any
- 5:47Speaker 1: homesickness spell? Homesick spells? So I gotta get back. This
- 5:51Speaker 1: is this is the right decision. How did you make
- 5:53Speaker 1: the transition? Um? Actually the transition was easy for me? Um?
- 5:58Speaker 1: All my friends played basketball. Um, I hang out with
- 6:01Speaker 1: an older crowd. So two of my best friends they
- 6:04Speaker 1: went off to play college basketball and I was there
- 6:06Speaker 1: the last of my senior year. So for me, can't
- 6:08Speaker 1: getting out. That was my main is getting out of
- 6:11Speaker 1: being being a positive guy for the community and you know,
- 6:14Speaker 1: showing people that you can't make it about make it
- 6:16Speaker 1: out of Alaska, to make it big in sports world.
- 6:19Speaker 1: And you know that was my main focus. Who put
- 6:20Speaker 1: a last on the mass? Okay? All Marie are your son?
- 6:24Speaker 1: This foundation? You just ceo this foundation? Okay, let me
- 6:27Speaker 1: just ask you this because I was always important that
- 6:29Speaker 1: I feel athletes get back. I have a foundation of
- 6:33Speaker 1: understanding their role. What what role did you play? Are
- 6:37Speaker 1: you playing in the messaging and the foundation? Oh? The
- 6:41Speaker 1: role is just keeping the message alive. And supporting the
- 6:44Speaker 1: vision that Mario first came up with, which was formulated
- 6:50Speaker 1: when we lost a dear friend the breast camp and
- 6:52Speaker 1: he just wanted to dedicate you know, time and energy
- 6:55Speaker 1: to supporting the cause. And so once that was his vision,
- 6:59Speaker 1: we went to work on making things happen by connecting
- 7:01Speaker 1: with various people in different communities. And of course Kansas
- 7:05Speaker 1: has been one of our biggest supporters because of the
- 7:07Speaker 1: fact he was in school there and we were blessed
- 7:10Speaker 1: to be able to open up a Mario's Closet which
- 7:13Speaker 1: is located in the local hospital things for you know,
- 7:17Speaker 1: breast cancer survivors. Now, what what what local is that
- 7:20Speaker 1: in Kansas the hospital ring gets opened? Yeah, what large
- 7:27Speaker 1: Maria hospital And it is actually a a closet is
- 7:31Speaker 1: that's the concept that it was a closet that was
- 7:34Speaker 1: a feasible and flexible and available first patients without having
- 7:38Speaker 1: to go different places. Especially when it comes down to
- 7:41Speaker 1: the hairy mogal process, which really interesting because when I
- 7:45Speaker 1: read your bio, when you know, they bring all kind
- 7:48Speaker 1: of everybody. My staff pitches me, show I guest ideas,
- 7:52Speaker 1: and my oldest sisters she passed away to breast cancer
- 7:55Speaker 1: and so so when I saw what you was doing
- 7:57Speaker 1: your foundation, that really really I got to help, you know,
- 8:00Speaker 1: promote your brain and get your word out. But you know,
- 8:03Speaker 1: because you know you're you know, you're a talent athlete
- 8:06Speaker 1: and you you raised your son right less Thomas, right,
- 8:09Speaker 1: thank you, and that that has to be said correctly
- 8:11Speaker 1: because we have so many stories about the misguided athlete, dysfunctional,
- 8:16Speaker 1: don't have a relationship, you know, be raised by somebody
- 8:20Speaker 1: else's family. I'm so tied to that store. You know.
- 8:23Speaker 1: We're fortunate that our story is we were able to
- 8:28Speaker 1: raise our sign and support him as well as his sister.
- 8:30Speaker 1: And although we did this in Alaska and we still
- 8:33Speaker 1: have a good support system in the lower forty eight
- 8:35Speaker 1: as we called it, and we were blessed to be
- 8:38Speaker 1: able to put him in a position to go and
- 8:40Speaker 1: live a dream. What is that dream, Mario? What is
- 8:44Speaker 1: that dream? You've been in Miami? I know it was
- 8:47Speaker 1: a dream down there. Being in Miami was a benefit.
- 8:52Speaker 1: The dream was always king to the NBA no matter
- 8:54Speaker 1: where I was, That's what I wanted to be. Oh,
- 8:57Speaker 1: Miami boy, I've been down to Miami. Mario, you were
- 9:00Speaker 1: the Miamily Night I knew it was the love you
- 9:03Speaker 1: still you still have a place down in Miami. You're
- 9:05Speaker 1: all up in Detroit, now, what's going on? No, No,
- 9:08Speaker 1: I'm just in Detroit of my girls having a baby
- 9:09Speaker 1: out here. But congratulation, appreciate it, okay. Uh can I
- 9:14Speaker 1: ask you your first child? Uh? No, my first ld Okay? Cool?
- 9:19Speaker 1: And now how with that being said, being a father,
- 9:25Speaker 1: how did how did that did it change your outlook
- 9:27Speaker 1: on life or what? Talk to me about that? Um,
- 9:32Speaker 1: it did kind of change my outlook on life. You
- 9:34Speaker 1: know before before you have kids and being a teenager
- 9:37Speaker 1: in college, you get thrown wild and do what everything
- 9:39Speaker 1: that's newly I mean with their reason have for uns?
- 9:42Speaker 1: So um, I have. I had my first kid the
- 9:45Speaker 1: year we won the national championship. So it was it
- 9:49Speaker 1: was a bitter sweet moment for me. Um. You know,
- 9:51Speaker 1: of course I love having my son, love having them,
- 9:54Speaker 1: but at the moment in time, it was it was
- 9:56Speaker 1: a hard transition just being a college athlete. Um, thinking
- 10:00Speaker 1: about making my next move going to the NBA. So um,
- 10:03Speaker 1: it was a lot of going back and forth with me.
- 10:05Speaker 1: But you know, at the end of the day, God
- 10:06Speaker 1: took care of it. He worked it out best for
- 10:08Speaker 1: me and my family and for my sons. So um,
- 10:11Speaker 1: everything came together and it just made me grow up faster,
- 10:14Speaker 1: to be more responsible, more more in tune to to
- 10:18Speaker 1: the world and what's going on and not just locked
- 10:20Speaker 1: up in the basketball world. To focus on basketball. That's
- 10:24Speaker 1: really important. I know, I only have one job, Mario,
- 10:27Speaker 1: and it changed my life, you know, and you know,
- 10:29Speaker 1: and become a sandpoint. It gave me a sense of
- 10:32Speaker 1: responsibility that it also showed me my legacy. You know,
- 10:37Speaker 1: this is what I should do. This is what That
- 10:39Speaker 1: was my next date with the with the legacy part.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Even Leaven leave my legacy at Kansas where where he
- 10:44Speaker 1: lives now is just something he could be proud of.
- 10:47Speaker 1: You know, I'm pretty sure he's what kid now, So
- 10:51Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure the next by years he's really gonna
- 10:54Speaker 1: hear about basketball and what I did at Kansas is
- 10:57Speaker 1: you know that legacies gonna liveing go on forever and
- 10:59Speaker 1: hopefully push him to you know, follow my steps footsteps
- 11:02Speaker 1: and even be better than me. So that was another
- 11:05Speaker 1: thing was that father heard Brod Now all Marie, you
- 11:09Speaker 1: know your son, you know he has his child. How
- 11:13Speaker 1: did he change when he had this for a child.
- 11:15Speaker 1: How did he change? Um, that's an interesting question. How
- 11:22Speaker 1: do I think? Like you said, it became more focused
- 11:24Speaker 1: of um, things that could affect his son. UM choices,
- 11:30Speaker 1: he made, decisions, he's made. It wasn't just about him anymore.
- 11:34Speaker 1: The boxing and realized that everything that he did, UM,
- 11:39Speaker 1: eventually his son's come to hear or his children were
- 11:42Speaker 1: here see and talk about it. And so therefore you
- 11:46Speaker 1: have to think about it. And then when things happened,
- 11:48Speaker 1: because you're still a young man, you have to be
- 11:50Speaker 1: ready to explain the dudes and don't the watch and
- 11:53Speaker 1: what and how you should you think differently or how
- 11:56Speaker 1: you could just thinks differently, um, as well as how
- 11:59Speaker 1: you can do things and be successfully. Love it. Love
- 12:02Speaker 1: it on the phone with the Mario Chalmers and his mother. Um,
- 12:06Speaker 1: they have a book that we're gonna come back in
- 12:07Speaker 1: a minute and talk about the ABC's a basketball dream,
- 12:10Speaker 1: big thing big and play big because he really played big.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Two championships and then the n t A championship. Right back,
- 12:20Speaker 1: Hi this Rashan mcgonaland welcome back to money making conversations. Uh,
- 12:23Speaker 1: the ABC is a basket Mario Chalmers. ABC is a
- 12:26Speaker 1: basketball dream, big Thing, Big Play Big. In the ABC
- 12:30Speaker 1: is a Basketball Mario Chalmers now showcases his skill as
- 12:33Speaker 1: an author. This highly acclaimed children's book was originally conceived
- 12:38Speaker 1: by Chalmers in high school at the time when he
- 12:40Speaker 1: dreamed the one day reaching the pinnacle of his sports,
- 12:43Speaker 1: which he did for sure collegiately and professionally. A lot
- 12:47Speaker 1: of a lot of y'all of young people don't do
- 12:48Speaker 1: that years later, and now serves as the foundation for
- 12:51Speaker 1: his success and will inspire young readers, regardless of their
- 12:54Speaker 1: skill level on the court, to always believe in themselves,
- 12:57Speaker 1: maintained a positive attitude, and re called to achieve the
- 13:01Speaker 1: loftiest of goals. Mr Chalmers, you can see this idea
- 13:05Speaker 1: in high school. Tell me about that ABC is a Basketball.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Um Let's started as the homeworkers Timer and Levin create
- 13:12Speaker 1: from my um My children literature class. And you know,
- 13:17Speaker 1: my teacher told us to do something that you know
- 13:20Speaker 1: that that we love to do and something that can
- 13:23Speaker 1: be educational. So you know, me being a basketball player,
- 13:26Speaker 1: um it was just the perfect I did to put
- 13:28Speaker 1: the ABC S and basketball together and come up to
- 13:30Speaker 1: ABCS of Basketball. So I did that homework and trying
- 13:33Speaker 1: to put it all together. Um, we got an A
- 13:35Speaker 1: plus on on the assignment, of course, and the teacher
- 13:39Speaker 1: was like, it's very good. So you know, later on
- 13:42Speaker 1: the line, you should you should do something with it.
- 13:45Speaker 1: And then, you know, that's what my mom plays to
- 13:47Speaker 1: be rolling it because she kept it going. You know,
- 13:49Speaker 1: since of lever Gad, I forgot about it. To be
- 13:51Speaker 1: honest with you, it was just a homeworkers time and
- 13:52Speaker 1: I did and then I put in the back of
- 13:55Speaker 1: my mind and my mom kept jabbing at me, like
- 13:57Speaker 1: you know you should just what I'm still and you know,
- 14:02Speaker 1: me being me, I was I did want to I
- 14:04Speaker 1: was more focusing basketball. I was like, I don't want
- 14:06Speaker 1: to do that. I don't want to do that. And
- 14:07Speaker 1: then once I had my son, that's where my mind
- 14:11Speaker 1: started to change, like, okay, you know I gotta I
- 14:13Speaker 1: got a son. Now, what's a good way for me
- 14:16Speaker 1: to connect what I do in teaching to him? And
- 14:20Speaker 1: my mom was still poking at me about the book,
- 14:22Speaker 1: and I was like, okay, green light, go ahead, let's
- 14:24Speaker 1: see what we'll do with the book. Um, put it
- 14:26Speaker 1: out there and see what type of response we get.
- 14:28Speaker 1: And you know, everybody loved the book and we just
- 14:30Speaker 1: went from here. You know, I'm just this is this
- 14:33Speaker 1: as a strong compliment, Mario. You don't, Yeah, I get
- 14:38Speaker 1: a lot of energy from a lot of individuals. You
- 14:41Speaker 1: don't feel like sports is your end all, your your tune,
- 14:46Speaker 1: your your conversation is it feels like it feels like
- 14:49Speaker 1: I'm talking to an entrepreneur, feels like I'm talking to
- 14:51Speaker 1: a businessman, to feel like I'm talking to a school teacher,
- 14:53Speaker 1: and feel like I'm talking about a guy who understands
- 14:57Speaker 1: his place in life. And I am I reading you right.
- 15:00Speaker 1: And once you go through type of injuries I had, man,
- 15:03Speaker 1: and your basketball does abound forever. I mean, you just
- 15:05Speaker 1: stay around the game forever, but you can't play the
- 15:07Speaker 1: game forever. You know, my mindset right now, I still
- 15:10Speaker 1: want to play. I still feel like a class Am'm
- 15:12Speaker 1: gonna play. But it's getting to the point where I started.
- 15:15Speaker 1: I still have to change my mindset and make sure
- 15:17Speaker 1: that I can live my life the way I did
- 15:19Speaker 1: playing basketball after basketball, and that's what I'm focused on.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Oh mom said what you gotta say to that? Mom?
- 15:26Speaker 1: Come on, man, I like that, you know, she said,
- 15:31Speaker 1: you know they still got game in them. But in
- 15:34Speaker 1: the meantime, you're more than the basketball player. It really is,
- 15:38Speaker 1: you know, like I said you, it's it's a it's
- 15:40Speaker 1: a it's a tone in your voice that lets me
- 15:43Speaker 1: know that that a lot of a lot of athletes
- 15:46Speaker 1: can't walk away. I can hear their voice. They really
- 15:49Speaker 1: miss it. They really And I'm not saying that you
- 15:52Speaker 1: that you that you don't miss it. I'm just saying
- 15:55Speaker 1: in your voice, it's a very comfortable voice, man, it
- 15:58Speaker 1: is a very and and maybe the fact that you've
- 16:01Speaker 1: had success at high school I think so. I mean,
- 16:04Speaker 1: I feel like when basketball accomplished pretty much everything I
- 16:08Speaker 1: every wanted to do in basketball, and I feel like
- 16:10Speaker 1: I'd still be a teacher of the game. I still
- 16:12Speaker 1: want to be a party of the game. But if
- 16:16Speaker 1: my mom is always telling me what you're gonna do
- 16:17Speaker 1: with the NBA is busy this year, and I feel
- 16:20Speaker 1: like they're busy. So I'm just trying to figure out
- 16:22Speaker 1: different ways to make it all work, put it all together,
- 16:24Speaker 1: and still stay around in the game and still you know,
- 16:27Speaker 1: still preach basketball. And I think this is the perfect one.
- 16:30Speaker 1: So Mr ch Almos, why did you? Why did you?
- 16:33Speaker 1: Why wouldn't you give up on this book? Why do
- 16:35Speaker 1: you know? Why do you why do you kept poking him,
- 16:37Speaker 1: as he said, poking him and reminding him of this book?
- 16:39Speaker 1: Why do you kept staying on top of him about this?
- 16:42Speaker 1: That ABC is a basketball is for attitude, B is
- 16:45Speaker 1: for basketball. See it's for cool years, for dunk years,
- 16:48Speaker 1: for effort. If come on, now, that's what the ABC
- 16:51Speaker 1: efforts and free throw g is for gold. I love
- 16:53Speaker 1: this book. It is it's it's it's it's really cool.
- 16:57Speaker 1: It's a great illustration. Yeah. Well, you know the question
- 17:01Speaker 1: you asked, why did I stay on them? Is number one.
- 17:04Speaker 1: We've always encouraged both of our children to pursue their
- 17:08Speaker 1: gifts and their dreams and not rely on just one
- 17:11Speaker 1: source because you never know what happened. And it was
- 17:15Speaker 1: a UM and bringing up Mario. One of the things
- 17:18Speaker 1: that I encouraged my kids to do was read early.
- 17:20Speaker 1: And one thing that I find the parents can do
- 17:23Speaker 1: is if you find an interesting topic that kids are
- 17:26Speaker 1: interested in reading, especially boys, UM, it just makes them
- 17:29Speaker 1: want to engage more. And so that was the concept
- 17:33Speaker 1: that the book promoted. And then when I actually saw
- 17:36Speaker 1: the assignment comes through the door, I was like Mario
- 17:38Speaker 1: here's the topic, but you got the birth it. And
- 17:41Speaker 1: to see him sit down and actually go prop the
- 17:44Speaker 1: computer to pick out specific players who was going to
- 17:47Speaker 1: represent what um it was going to represent what the
- 17:51Speaker 1: ABC stood for. But of course a most we did
- 17:54Speaker 1: the book, you couldn't use those players because most of
- 17:56Speaker 1: the people we sellected were NBA players who He said
- 17:59Speaker 1: that to see the playbooks so um because it was
- 18:03Speaker 1: just a powerful too. And I also had a conversation
- 18:07Speaker 1: from the coach's wife saying, Hey, I love the game,
- 18:11Speaker 1: but I don't always know enough about the game, and
- 18:13Speaker 1: just to look at this book and see this, it
- 18:15Speaker 1: sort of breaks it down for me. So it's just
- 18:17Speaker 1: a tool that I thought would be helpful for moms,
- 18:19Speaker 1: for parents, for kids, for teachers, for counselors. And even
- 18:23Speaker 1: one preacher said he could preach the book. Now I
- 18:25Speaker 1: haven't seen that yet. Come on, why can't he preach
- 18:31Speaker 1: you on the ABC is a basketball? He said he could,
- 18:34Speaker 1: So we'll see. Well, you know you're on my should
- 18:37Speaker 1: up to tell everybody about the book. The books available
- 18:39Speaker 1: Amazon dot Com, Baunch and Noble Target. And also if
- 18:43Speaker 1: you send me up because I got a nice little
- 18:45Speaker 1: autograph from you Mr Chalmels, if you send me a banner,
- 18:50Speaker 1: I will put it on my social media and I
- 18:53Speaker 1: will help this Christmas time. This makes a good Christmas gift. Okay, Christmas,
- 18:58Speaker 1: come on to jump right on the he know he
- 19:00Speaker 1: no promotion. Oh yeah, I like doing this, guy think
- 19:03Speaker 1: so so you know, let's let's let's let's look at that.
- 19:06Speaker 1: And if you send me some Mario, if your autograph
- 19:08Speaker 1: a few I have two hundred and thirty thousand fan
- 19:11Speaker 1: club members in my fan club base. I sent some
- 19:14Speaker 1: out to them to encourage people to buy my fan
- 19:16Speaker 1: club base and I got almost a million social media followers.
- 19:19Speaker 1: I'll send it out. I'll post this. I just post
- 19:22Speaker 1: this a banner that you gotta send to me and
- 19:25Speaker 1: drive them to all these platforms Amazon dot Com, Bonds
- 19:27Speaker 1: and Noble and Target. So can y'all do that favorite
- 19:30Speaker 1: to for me? You know, I'm just saying, Rashan just
- 19:32Speaker 1: trying to help our little brother, that's all. Little brother.
- 19:37Speaker 1: I already tell you I'm a big brother. Now, I
- 19:38Speaker 1: already tell you that. I already tell you I'm gonna
- 19:42Speaker 1: I'm gonna take care of you. But but let's let's
- 19:44Speaker 1: talk a little bit about you. You were you hitting
- 19:47Speaker 1: now because uh if hopefully I remember correct, and when
- 19:50Speaker 1: you came into it and be where you not? You
- 19:52Speaker 1: was a second round draft pick. Your s okay, cool,
- 19:55Speaker 1: you were not the first round draft pick. And so
- 19:57Speaker 1: we alway know the arts make an m BI. It's
- 20:00Speaker 1: tough anyway. You're successful in high school, two championships in
- 20:04Speaker 1: the state of Alaska. You're successful. It's the game winning
- 20:08Speaker 1: shot at Kansas. Then the whole first round go through.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Do you get drafted in the second round? You're going
- 20:14Speaker 1: down to Miami. Legends down, the legends are down that way?
- 20:18Speaker 1: Doing you how do you make that team? How do you?
- 20:22Speaker 1: How do you how do as a as a as
- 20:24Speaker 1: a person because the odds are gets it? How do you?
- 20:26Speaker 1: How did you make that team? Mario? Um, honestly, there
- 20:32Speaker 1: is no way I wasn't gonna make the team. In
- 20:33Speaker 1: my mind, Like growing up, my mom will tell you,
- 20:36Speaker 1: I put everything in the basketball, Like I would go
- 20:38Speaker 1: to the gym after class by myself. My mom is
- 20:41Speaker 1: a gym teacher out of middle school. After school, Chad
- 20:45Speaker 1: do para tragic conference or great homework. I just like
- 20:48Speaker 1: my opening gym and let me in there and I'll
- 20:50Speaker 1: just be in the gym for hours, one on one
- 20:52Speaker 1: by myself, calmed down in my head five three two
- 20:55Speaker 1: one set in the last shot. So it was it
- 20:57Speaker 1: was just something in my mind. Like in from Alaska,
- 21:00Speaker 1: a lot of people told me that I would never
- 21:01Speaker 1: make I'd never make it out, and you know that
- 21:03Speaker 1: was my motivation for everything, just I'm proved as wrong,
- 21:07Speaker 1: Like nobody had never told me that I couldn't do anything.
- 21:10Speaker 1: So that was my mindset. And even when I got
- 21:13Speaker 1: to the heat, Uh, my mindset was the gay was
- 21:16Speaker 1: one of my favorite players growing up. But I actually
- 21:18Speaker 1: met him during the Great Alaska Shoot that when they
- 21:20Speaker 1: came to Alaska and I told him then I'm like,
- 21:23Speaker 1: I'm gonna be in the indre with you one and
- 21:25Speaker 1: he never believed me. And the first day I got
- 21:27Speaker 1: to my nam, he was like, you know, you're the
- 21:29Speaker 1: kid from Alaska that I met and told me he's
- 21:32Speaker 1: gonna be in the NBA. And we've been thro the
- 21:37Speaker 1: teammates and you know, from that day, I think I
- 21:39Speaker 1: earned everybody's respect because I've never let anybody tell me
- 21:41Speaker 1: I couldn't do anything. Type of person, I'm gonna try
- 21:44Speaker 1: to prove you wrong. If I can't pretty wrong. I'm
- 21:46Speaker 1: gonna try to find a different way to prove you wrong.
- 21:49Speaker 1: And you know that was just my mindset, never quit,
- 21:51Speaker 1: never give up. And it took me to where I'm
- 21:53Speaker 1: at now and it's still taking me further places. Now,
- 21:56Speaker 1: what's the future for you, sir? Um teachers up in
- 22:00Speaker 1: the air. Like I said, I still want to play basketball. UM,
- 22:03Speaker 1: just trying to figure out the right position in the
- 22:05Speaker 1: right situation from me. Um, definitely gonna come out with
- 22:08Speaker 1: another book. UM, just trying to figure out the title
- 22:11Speaker 1: and and what direction we're gonna go in that. And
- 22:14Speaker 1: you know, just try to stay relevant, keep doing things
- 22:17Speaker 1: to help my foundation. UM, just keep going from there. Well,
- 22:21Speaker 1: I tell you you are relevant. Don't use the word
- 22:23Speaker 1: stay because you care and I understand that. I will
- 22:27Speaker 1: just tell you this a little bit advice from me
- 22:29Speaker 1: is that, Um, you are special. I can hear in
- 22:33Speaker 1: your voice. I don't believe you know how great you
- 22:37Speaker 1: can be. Yet I think you should take the time
- 22:39Speaker 1: and evaluate that your parents have raised you right and
- 22:42Speaker 1: understanding that there are other options out there in life
- 22:45Speaker 1: besides the basketball. You're the basketball has been the center
- 22:48Speaker 1: of your greatness, the center of your success and you're
- 22:51Speaker 1: in the income growth in your life. But you your foundation,
- 22:56Speaker 1: my man. But you need to understand I hear. I
- 23:00Speaker 1: meet a lot of people. I've been I've been blessed
- 23:01Speaker 1: to talk to a lot of different people in my life.
- 23:04Speaker 1: And your future is bright. And know that. Just take
- 23:07Speaker 1: time this week and think about it for a little
- 23:09Speaker 1: while and sit on yourself. Sit on yourself and nobody else.
- 23:13Speaker 1: He's selfish for about a couple of days, and think
- 23:15Speaker 1: about Mario. Okay, Mom, thank you for raising that man,
- 23:21Speaker 1: and thank you both for you guys for putting out
