- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In Luke chapter 20, Jesus tells
- 0:46the story of a man who planted a vineyard and rented it out to
- 0:49vine growers. The way this relationship would
- 0:52work is that these vine growers would farm the land, nurturing
- 0:56and growing this vineyard that the man had planted and then we
- 0:59get to keep a portion of the produce.
- 1:01In exchange for their effort, they would give the rest of the
- 1:04yield from the vineyard to the owner.
- 1:06Well, when it was time for harvest, the field's owner sent
- 1:09one of his slaves to go and collect his share of the
- 1:11produce. Rather than give what was owed,
- 1:15the vine growers beat the slave and sent him back empty handed
- 1:18to the owner of the field. The owner of the field sent two
- 1:21more slaves for the same purpose who were both beaten on arrival
- 1:26and given none of the crop. Finally, the owner of the field
- 1:29said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son.
- 1:33Perhaps they will respect him. The vine growers, though, saw
- 1:37this as an opportunity to fully lay claim to the field once and
- 1:40for all. They agreed together.
- 1:43This is the air. Let us kill him so that the
- 1:46inheritance will be ours. That's exactly what they did.
- 1:50Let's listen in to what Jesus said next to those listening to
- 1:53him tell the story. He said.
- 1:55What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?
- 1:58He will come and destroy these vine growers and will give the
- 2:01vineyard to others. When they heard it, they said,
- 2:04May it never be. But Jesus looked at them and
- 2:07said, What then is this that is written?
- 2:10The stone which the builders rejected?
- 2:12This became the chief cornerstone.
- 2:15Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, but on
- 2:19whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust.
- 2:23Ultimately, this parable is a word of judgment against the
- 2:26Pharisees and against those like them who had rejected God's
- 2:29prophets and ultimately rejected God himself in the person of
- 2:33Christ, the owner of the field. God had sent his servants to an
- 2:38obstinate people, and they had been rejected.
- 2:41And now in Christ he was sending his own beloved son, this Son
- 2:46who a few chapters later, though he was sinless, would be
- 2:49executed. And for those who reject him,
- 2:52for those who in doing so arrogantly take for granted
- 2:54God's mercy and God's patience, it will not end well.
- 2:59Judgment is coming for all those who would oppose God by
- 3:03rejecting Christ. And here is the point of
- 3:06decision for you and for me. Ultimately, what you do with
- 3:10Jesus is all that matters, and there's no neutral ground.
- 3:14Christ is the stone which the builders rejected, and He is the
- 3:18chief cornerstone. In other words, He is the
- 3:22foundation of the Kingdom of God, the rock on which the
- 3:25people of God stand, and He is the stone which will crush all
- 3:29of those who reject Him. Either we will receive God's
- 3:32Son, either we will build our lives on this chief cornerstone,
- 3:37or we will refuse him. Either we will recognize our sin
- 3:41and our need of a Savior and repent, or we will face eternal
- 3:45judgment at the hand of a holy God.
- 3:48So how will you respond to Jesus?
- 3:51Will you reject him and be crushed, broken and scattered
- 3:55like dust? Or will you receive him in
- 3:58repentance and faith and become part of that great building
- 4:01God's church built upon Christ, the cornerstone?
