- 0:00All right, welcome back to another episode of Run Mountain
- 0:03Peaks episode 14. And this was going to be the 1st
- 0:09guest episode, but unfortunately, things did not
- 0:13work out. And I'll tell you why.
- 0:18I was going to have my buddy Ryan Fornier on the podcast.
- 0:21Super strong runner, very fast gets after it and we're going to
- 0:26do a hike, try to get a little bit of running in and then do
- 0:30the podcast. But on our on our way up north
- 0:34or during our trek, we encountered some a little bit.
- 0:40We can count on some barriers that slowed us down.
- 0:43So today we did the Osceola's. We did them from the Cank
- 0:47because in the winter triple I row to shut down and you can
- 0:51only do them from basically going up E Osceola and then over
- 0:54to Osceola and out and back. And Osceola is one of the more
- 1:00popular hikes in the White Mountains.
- 1:02I think it's a fairly easier one with really good views,
- 1:06especially from triple I Rd. It's it's a very mild grade and
- 1:10it's a great view. So everyone that's like one of
- 1:12the ones that people that people do for their first 4000 footer,
- 1:16one of the first ones that they do is the Osceola's or at least
- 1:19Osceola. But in the winter it doesn't get
- 1:22that much love. You got to go up E Osceola with
- 1:26which is a a steep climb. And then in the winter it can be
- 1:30even more, even harder. It can be icy a little bit.
- 1:34And so it doesn't get a lot of love.
- 1:36But the 4000 footers, I mean, everyone likes the 4000 footers
- 1:41every day of the week now, gritters list people, everybody
- 1:44goes out. And so between Thursday and
- 1:47Friday, I was banking on somebody breaking that out.
- 1:52But we started out, we got there a little after 9.
- 1:58Strategically in the winter, I'll sleep in a little bit
- 2:02extra. It's going to be a lit, you
- 2:05sleep in a little bit extra. It's going to be a little bit
- 2:07warmer when you start your run and hopefully people are ahead
- 2:11of you breaking out trail for you.
- 2:12So if the trails aren't packed down like it's snowed Wednesday,
- 2:15I think it's snowed Wednesday night.
- 2:19So we got recent snow up there and, and yeah, usually just let
- 2:23some of the hikers get a little head start ahead of you.
- 2:25It's going to make your day easier.
- 2:27So we get there at like 9:00 and 9:15 start and there's a few
- 2:30cars in the parking lot. The parking lot is like a foot
- 2:34and a half of snow. It felt like apparently some guy
- 2:37in the in the in the parking lot who was there getting ready when
- 2:40we pulled in said that they just helped get a Subaru that was
- 2:44stuck in the lot off the lot. And then they went and parked.
- 2:49There's a little like the ski trail that you can take right on
- 2:52that turn on the Kank. There's a little pull off room
- 2:55where a lot of people park in the winter if you can't get in
- 2:58the lot. But I mean, I have a four wheel
- 3:00drive truck so I was like, I should be good.
- 3:02And we start going up, It's like a sharp turn and there was a
- 3:05foot and a half of snow and it was all this like beach sand,
- 3:08loose snow. And it took me, you know, 5
- 3:11minutes to park this thing and get it next to like the three
- 3:13other cars in the parking lot. So there were a few other cars
- 3:17in the parking lot. So I knew I could get in there.
- 3:19But it took a little, a little 27 point turn to get really
- 3:23tucked in next to a car. But we did it and there were a
- 3:27few cars there and then there were I think 4 cars at the
- 3:31parked on the side of the road. So 7-7 people on the trail.
- 3:34So it's like all right, nice. And Ryan, he, like I said, super
- 3:40strong runner, super fast. He he hiked it the Appalachian
- 3:44Trail, I think the year before, yeah, I think last year he hiked
- 3:48it, but he hasn't done a ton of other 4000 footers and not a ton
- 3:54of the winter hiking up there. And so I was supposed to be kind
- 3:59of more, more like, I know what I'm doing out here kind of thing
- 4:02because I go like every weekend, especially in the winter.
- 4:04And I told him I was like, there's a few people ahead of
- 4:08us. It's you're not going to post
- 4:10hole today. It's going to be annoying.
- 4:13It's probably, it's definitely going to be harder if you don't
- 4:15have snowshoes because you have like he didn't have like good
- 4:17running snowshoes. I was like, it's just going to
- 4:19be kind of more difficult for you, but you should be fine.
- 4:23Like you're not going to destroy the trail post sewing.
- 4:25It's just going to stink a little bit for you.
- 4:27I think snowshoes are a little bit faster, but I mean, there
- 4:31are a bunch of cars there. So I was like, yeah, I, I, you
- 4:33know, probably don't need them. So I, I put on my Dion snowshoes
- 4:37at the, at the trailhead and he didn't.
- 4:39And we take off running and the first mile up to that junction,
- 4:42it was smooth sailing, chit chatting, good to be out.
- 4:46It wasn't super, super cold, you know, And then we catch up to
- 4:51maybe like one or two people going up.
- 4:53And then we start climbing up towards the East Osceola climb
- 4:57and we pass a couple of people, maybe like one or two groups.
- 5:01There's a group of five. And right before you have that
- 5:05mile of like 1700 feet of gain, super, super steep on East
- 5:09Osceola, we catch up to this group of women, 3 ladies, and
- 5:14they are breaking out trail and they go, oh, thank God, thank
- 5:18God you guys are here. And I was thinking, I looked
- 5:24around, I was like, Oh no, I did not expect us to be breaking
- 5:29trail today. So I mean, in the winter you're
- 5:32going to just have to break, break trail a little bit.
- 5:34But E Osceola is a tough climb to do it in.
- 5:37So I had small Dion snowshoes. He didn't have snowshoes, no
- 5:41poles. We both had two sets of gloves,
- 5:44which is fine, but no poles. And on that super steep climb,
- 5:49just it was, it was a bear. And so, yeah, once we started
- 5:53breaking trail, we had probably 2 miles to East Osceola and then
- 5:57to Osceola before we turned around.
- 5:59I knew we were going to be breaking the trail the whole
- 6:00time. I was like, this is going to
- 6:01take us a lot longer than than we planned on.
- 6:05And I was kind of disappointed that no one had been out there.
- 6:08I, you know, it makes sense in the weekdays less people get out
- 6:11in the winter. But yes, but basically, so last
- 6:19Sunday I go to Canon and there's only two people parked at Canon.
- 6:22I also got kind of like a 9:00 AM start.
- 6:25And so I don't, I don't know if if this winter there's less
- 6:29people getting out or it's just been really snowy so people are
- 6:32down or it's the holiday season, people are have errands are busy
- 6:35or whatever. But it seems like from my
- 6:38experience, less people are getting out this winter.
- 6:40And so we didn't get the benefit of getting getting the trail
- 6:42broken, so we had to break it. It ended up being fine.
- 6:46It was a good day. But yeah, we broke trail for a
- 6:49while. And they were, I mean, it was
- 6:51probably a good 8 to 12 inches everywhere.
- 6:54And then there were up to two 2 1/2 foot drifts once you got in
- 6:59between the peaks. So it was slow going.
- 7:02We definitely both got a little bit cold, like we were moving a
- 7:05little bit light, but we made it and essentially it ate into all
- 7:11of the podcast time. So Ryan will be back, we'll be
- 7:14on the podcast eventually. You'll get to hear all the the
- 7:16crazy stuff he's done because he had a big year this year.
- 7:18He did a lot of cool stuff. So we'll have him on and talk
- 7:22about all that stuff, but not today.
- 7:25So what do we have today? Today I'm going to do, I'll do a
- 7:29quick my first winter Prezi Traverse story because I just
- 7:33think that's a funny story to tell and there's just kind of 1
- 7:35moment that is just so stupid looking back.
- 7:38So I'll do that. I'm going to talk about the Tark
- 7:42Winter Classic race that happened.
- 7:44Was it last weekend? Yeah, I think it was last
- 7:46weekend. We'll go through the results a
- 7:48couple of really strong times there.
- 7:49That's a fun big race to follow. And Tark just does.
- 7:53People always show up for the Tark races.
- 7:55So we'll go through those results, the Mac and cheese
- 7:59results. So actually, unfortunately, I
- 8:03didn't do the craft versus Annie's challenge doing it
- 8:06tonight. So maybe I put this at the end
- 8:09of this. Maybe I do like a recap at the
- 8:11end of this episode or it just has to wait in another week.
- 8:14But the reason I didn't do it, I had full intentions to do it
- 8:17Wednesday of this week. I only have one pot in my
- 8:20apartment. I have this one big pot that I
- 8:23just used to boil and cook everything in.
- 8:26I think it's efficient. I think it's effective.
- 8:29You know, I don't like to have a ton of things in my life.
- 8:31You know, I feel like less items, less stuff you got to
- 8:33stress about, but I could not usually I can think of other
- 8:38ways to make things like, you know, lacking all of the kitchen
- 8:44stuff that maybe I should have. I couldn't figure out how to
- 8:46make two pots of Mac and cheese without tainting one of them to
- 8:52taste them at the same time. Because I think eating Mac and
- 8:56cheese right after it's done versus 15 minutes after it's
- 8:58kind of had cooled in the in the the cheesy liquefies, the
- 9:02liquefied cheese is kind of starting to solidify.
- 9:05I think there's a big difference and we want even even playing
- 9:09fields for the Mac and cheese taste test.
- 9:12So going to purchase another pot because I have AI have two cast
- 9:16iron pot pan kind of things that I have boiled water in and could
- 9:21you could have used, But I didn't know if the flavors in
- 9:23those pots would impact the Mac and cheese.
- 9:27So we needed a head to head at the same time challenge.
- 9:30So going to do it tonight. We will get those results later.
- 9:33And I will say I posted it. I was getting a lot of comments
- 9:36on the Instagram that I posted. It sounds like everybody is on
- 9:40the Annie's train. I said in the podcast last week,
- 9:44I have never even, I don't even think I tried Annie's.
- 9:46I've always been a craft person and I am.
- 9:48So I, it was like Annie's 100,000% not even close.
- 9:53Everyone was on Annie's side. So I'm assuming Andy's is going
- 9:57to be better, but but we're still going to do the tape, the
- 10:02test and I will give my results. And a couple of the things that
- 10:05I did think about it, when you go to the Craft Mac or the Mac
- 10:08and cheese aisle, there's Annie's, there's Craft.
- 10:11And then and these boxes are like 5-4 for $5 or something at
- 10:16Market Basket, they do have a Mac, Market Basket Mac and
- 10:20cheese that's like you can get like 8 for $3 like crazy cheap.
- 10:25And all I know for sure is that cannot be the best Mac and
- 10:28cheese. It's got to be crafter Annie's.
- 10:30There was another brand that I heard that people say are pretty
- 10:33good, but it seems like Annie's a clear favorite.
- 10:36I'm still going to give it a go and I will still report back.
- 10:38And no offense. Sabrina said that she always
- 10:41liked the shaped Mac and cheese, like, you know, the SpongeBob or
- 10:45whatever characters Mac and cheese.
- 10:48I told her when I was a kid, those things scared me.
- 10:51I the, the, the texture in my mouth when I ate those, I did
- 10:56not like it. So all I know is that I, I was
- 11:00thinking too, maybe I should do like a white cheddar Annie's
- 11:02regular, Annie's regular craft and then the shapes craft and
- 11:06then throw a Market Basket in there.
- 11:08But I mean, I would go into a food that is, I would feel so
- 11:11horrible after trying all those Mac and cheeses.
- 11:14I, this is not something I eat regularly.
- 11:16It's kind of like a treat like once or twice a year I'll make a
- 11:18box. I don't think I can eat five
- 11:20boxes of food because when I start eating, I I usually need
- 11:24to eat, eat it all. So I would just way overdose on
- 11:28Mac and cheese. So that's that's one topic that
- 11:32I guess you might have to wait for next week or I'll throw it
- 11:34in at the back of this Next up week, me and Jocelyn cut down a
- 11:39Christmas tree in the white national White Mountain National
- 11:43Forest. I'll talk about that experience
- 11:45because it was not what I was expecting.
- 11:48And then I'm going to do a fantasy football rant.
- 11:51I'm going to talk about Stranger things.
- 11:54Oh, we did the start. Yeah, I'm going to talk about
- 11:56stranger things because I'm, I just started season 3 guys.
- 11:58And I know it's, I feel like it's big right now.
- 12:00I'm not caught up. I'm trying to get caught up.
- 12:03I'll give you my thoughts on stranger things.
- 12:05And then, oh, we did the Osceola trip report.
- 12:07So that's, that's what I have today.
- 12:10So a couple running things and then a couple kind of more fun
- 12:13things. But all right, so First off,
- 12:18we'll do let's go to the the Tark race results before I do my
- 12:24first Prezi. And also I will say I brought
- 12:27the the full chopper winter mittens today.
- 12:30It's a little bit warmer than last week, but last week my
- 12:34index finger, somebody, John Bori commented on my Instagram
- 12:38and said, is your finger cold? I could not feel my index finger
- 12:42until, I mean, I, I recorded it at Cannon Mountain, which is
- 12:46like exit 34B in the White Mountains.
- 12:49I think it was probably exit 28 or 29 before I could feel my
- 12:53finger again. I was, I was a little bit
- 12:55nervous that I, I'd done some permanent nerve damage there.
- 12:59So we're keeping everything covered today and probably the
- 13:04rest of the winter. We just got to tough it out.
- 13:06I mean, this is yeah, I started a podcast and and I just do it
- 13:09in the back of my truck and we have the coldest winter we've
- 13:12had in like 10 years. But no, I kind of, I do kind of
- 13:17like it. It's kind of too.
- 13:19But OK. So the Tark race, this is one of
- 13:24the so the Tark races, I think they're all in Massachusetts.
- 13:27Maybe the Wapak starts in New Hampshire, but most of these are
- 13:31Massachusetts based races, very popular outside of Boston.
- 13:35So you feel like you have a big running community in Boston and
- 13:39in and around Boston and they have a bunch of cool races.
- 13:42I have not raced in any, but I volunteered out a few.
- 13:45I've been to a few. There's lots of people there
- 13:48that kind of the same people go and very enthusiastic and some
- 13:52so strong runners have ran over the years and this year.
- 13:56So it's always like a pretty competitive race and people
- 13:59throw it on some good times. So there is a, there are three
- 14:03different races. There's an 8 Miller, which I
- 14:05think it's just one loop of the Skyline Trail.
- 14:08Yeah, 8 miles, a single loop of the Skyline Trail.
- 14:11And then the 32 Miller is a four loop of the Skyline Trail.
- 14:15And then the 5th 40 Miller is the five loops of the Skyline
- 14:18Trail. I spend most of my time,
- 14:23especially on trails, like running in the mountains, some
- 14:25local mountains, but mostly up north in the Whites.
- 14:29And I think, you know, I started hiking more than running.
- 14:32And so I remember the first time I was going to the Skyline Loop,
- 14:35I was kind of like, this is some city running.
- 14:37This is going to be, this is going to be easy.
- 14:39It's going to be super fast. It's going to be smooth.
- 14:42Yeah. They say it's rocky.
- 14:43It's going to be smooth. The first time I ran the Skyline
- 14:45Loop, it is rockier than you. It is more technical than you
- 14:49would think. Like just looking at the map,
- 14:52there's no big climbs. It's all up and down.
- 14:55I think the loop has about maybe 12 or 1300 feet of climbing.
- 14:58So there's decent climbing, but there's no sustained climbs.
- 15:01And it's it's 1200 feet over 8 miles.
- 15:03So you're like, this is easy. It is a rocky loop.
- 15:06It's obviously not scrambly super steep like a white like
- 15:10the White Mountains, like a Monadnock.
- 15:12But as far as just kind of casual, more casual, kind of
- 15:16flatter undulating trails, it's as rocky as you get around in in
- 15:20New England, southern New England.
- 15:22So it is a good trail if you haven't been there.
- 15:24It's a good training for technical stuff.
- 15:27And I was impressed by it the first time I went.
- 15:30So it's a it's a good loop. We'll start with the 40 Miller.
- 15:33Only nine people did it. 9 results here.
- 15:36The winner, Matt Pacheco, he ran it in 631, which was over an
- 15:41hour ahead of the second place person, Tillman Daddy and then
- 15:46Grand Simon came in third. He ran 73353.
- 15:50So OK, so second and third had a photo finish.
- 15:55Let's call it yeah, photo finish that 5 seconds within each
- 15:59other. So Tillman digs it out and gets
- 16:01the gets the 2nd place finish there.
- 16:03And then the 1st place female was Taylor Varelli, Kingston,
- 16:08Mass. She runs nine O 7.
- 16:10She wins the 40. Miller Yeah, There are only nine
- 16:13people in that race. The 32.
- 16:15Miller, Max Perezik, he wins it in 447, which is I believe the
- 16:23third fastest time on that course.
- 16:26I haven't pulled up here. Yeah, Yeah, I have that pulled
- 16:30up here. Yeah.
- 16:31The third fastest time on that course.
- 16:33The course record is Patrick Karen.
- 16:35Duh. Guys an animal.
- 16:38He ran a four O 9 in 2018. That is just insane.
- 16:43And then and then the second fastest time in history was 443
- 16:47and Max runs 444. I don't know.
- 16:50Max yeah, I think he's from he's from the city, but he's been
- 16:53doing I think he was king of the White Mountains, the White
- 16:56Mountain Endurance Cup winner this past year.
- 16:58I on the air of era Viper racing team.
- 17:02Dude is fast. He he is fast.
- 17:05I think somebody told me he does like bike or he was a cyclist
- 17:09and then he got into trail stuff and he he's been doing all the
- 17:12races. And yeah, that is a super legit
- 17:14time. I mean, Dan Gripp ran that last
- 17:16year and ran it at 4:50. And Dan Gripp, I mean, go look
- 17:20at his sign up. That dude is super fast, has won
- 17:22big races. Keith Nadu 2023 runs 451.
- 17:25So these are the kind of people that he that he put up a good
- 17:28time with. I don't know what the weather
- 17:30was. I know it was cold last weekend,
- 17:31but I'm assuming it was like decent weather.
- 17:35So some, some sluggers. So that was a really good time
- 17:38by Max. He won by about 20 minutes.
- 17:42So Christopher Stevers and came in second five O 6.
- 17:46And then Matt Carbone 528. If you don't know Matt Carbone,
- 17:49just a crusher. Just always he's done a bunch of
- 17:52races and just always super strong.
- 17:55The winner female Caitlyn Murphy, she runs 5:40.
- 18:00So let's see what let's see what that time is all time.
- 18:03So 540, the 32 Miller. So she runs the second fastest
- 18:07time of all time. Boom, there you go, Second and
- 18:10third fastest time for women and men's.
- 18:13Yeah. So Evelyn Needham last year ran
- 18:16a 536, and that's the only person who's run this faster.
- 18:19And there are some really strong runners.
- 18:21I mean, Cassandra Marin's on this list.
- 18:23I don't know, you know, a bunch of these names.
- 18:25Leah Lawry. There's a lot of Liz O'Connor.
- 18:27There's a lot of like strong runners that have came out and
- 18:30done this Tark race, especially the 32 mile.
- 18:32I think that one's the the most run and so yeah, some super
- 18:38strong, strong times there. So Congrats to all of those
- 18:42people. They don't have this list posted
- 18:44by man and female. So I see Emily Knowlton, she
- 18:48rents 7/12. She might have been in second
- 18:50and then Catherine, Emily may have been third or fourth or
- 18:54five. I may have missed a couple names
- 18:55here, but the the lists are posted.
- 18:57Tark does a weird thing where they post it on ultra sign up,
- 19:01but you can't get the whole list there.
- 19:03It's one of those results that just shows up in black.
- 19:05So you can't really do a little little bit of poking around
- 19:08there. But as it was this.
- 19:10And then last but not least, maybe we should have started
- 19:12with this, the eight mile race. Patrick Karen runs a course
- 19:16record 5430. I mean, just flying.
- 19:21I don't have yeah, I don't have the course records for the eight
- 19:24mile pulled up here. I wish they have like a Google
- 19:26spreadsheet, but oh, here we go. Oh, I'm in the Google Docs right
- 19:30now. Hold on, people.
- 19:31Hold on folks. Hopefully this is I'm just
- 19:34expecting, OK, I'm not going to look right now.
- 19:36I'm just expecting the top eight mile times the first like 4 out
- 19:40of the first five are just Patrick Karen in different
- 19:43years. That is my guess because he runs
- 19:46at that eight mile race every almost every year.
- 19:48So that's my guess on the course records there.
- 19:53Oh, this is just a 25. Oh, where did I see the course
- 19:58record? All right, I don't think we're
- 19:59going to want, want, want. I don't think we're going to get
- 20:03the course records right now. It's hard.
- 20:05I have so many tabs open on my phone.
- 20:07So anyway, he runs a course record.
- 20:09He did have the course record before.
- 20:10I think it was 55 something. And I mean, that dude is just
- 20:15just a crusher when he's running, when he's racing, yeah,
- 20:18if he steps in the start line yet head for head for second.
- 20:23He's super fast and super nice. He's he.
- 20:25I think he runs the Air Viper. All the air by accounts.
- 20:29So he goes to all the White Mountain endurance races.
- 20:33Run free. Am I am I, am I messing this up?
- 20:36Free move free, move free. Is his kind of like a brand or,
- 20:41or he's got a cool website up there.
- 20:42So yeah, he's a cool person to talk to.
- 20:45I like seeing him at the races. 2nd place was Samuel Cohen, one
- 20:48O 3. So Patrick Quinn's like 9
- 20:51minutes. Yeah, I mean, it's just dudes
- 20:53fast. And then Michael Sage runs one O
- 20:559 for 3rd actually. OK, this is Sydney Swearingen
- 21:04runs a 1/19. She might have won.
- 21:06All right, hold on. Maybe I have to.
- 21:08I got to look. Yeah, Sorry.
- 21:09I'm sorry. I'm butchering this right now.
- 21:11I just want to make sure I get this right.
- 21:13OK. No, but it didn't come up.
- 21:15So, yeah, go check out the eight mile list and and we'll see who
- 21:19won. I think Sydney won.
- 21:21Crashed to Sydney. OK.
- 21:25I think those, I think those were the yeah, those are the the
- 21:28best times. How many people run this eight
- 21:29mile 63 people like that? Yeah, there's lots of lots of
- 21:33people run it. So that was the yeah, that was
- 21:36the Tark, the Tark race recaps. Yeah.
- 21:42Super cool, cool race. If you, if you haven't got
- 21:44there, went there and done it, go do a Tark race.
- 21:47They're fun. There's good camaraderie.
- 21:49If you're just getting into ultra running, those are great
- 21:51races to go to, to meet people, have people to run with everyone
- 21:55going different paces, party pace, fast pace, lots of a
- 21:59stations. It's not logistically super
- 22:01hard. So those are good race to check
- 22:02them out. OK, the first Prezi traverse
- 22:06story. We'll, yeah, we'll probably make
- 22:08this pretty, pretty quick. Yeah, yeah, we'll make it
- 22:11decently quick. The first presidential story.
- 22:14So I was just getting into ultra running and I had just done a 50
- 22:21mile or so. I'd done that the virtual 50
- 22:23mile that I kind of talked about previously and I think it was a
- 22:26couple months after that. So I really hadn't even been
- 22:29running. I'd, you know, been training
- 22:31like barely. I wasn't even training.
- 22:32I just would run once a couple times a week and was getting
- 22:35into hiking and I heard about the Prezi traverse and was in
- 22:38this kind of I want to do hard things mode.
- 22:41And so I go and, and do this Prezi traverse and I talked to
- 22:44my mom, who's a big hyper hiker and she kind of helped me with
- 22:46tips. Do this trail.
- 22:47You'll be good on your own, pick a good day, yadda, yadda.
- 22:50So it's sometime in March and I go alone, and I'd done a couple
- 22:55winter hikes with her, but I don't even know if I'd done
- 22:58maybe one hike alone in the winter.
- 23:00But I wasn't super well versed. But we picked a good day and she
- 23:04dropped me off at the trailhead. So it was like I wasn't being
- 23:08reckless by just going out there not knowing what I'm doing.
- 23:10But I remember hiking up to Madison and Adams.
- 23:15It was the first time. So I had brought snowshoes.
- 23:17I had bought an ice axe. I put an ice axe on there.
- 23:20I had at least 3 liters of water, I'm sure, and just a ton
- 23:26of stuff, ton of layers, a huge pack all filled up.
- 23:30And I'm going up there and I, and I've been doing a little
- 23:33hiking, but I hadn't been doing a crazy amount of stuff and I
- 23:36was thinking this might take me 12 hours.
- 23:39And so that's what I'm thinking hiking up at 3:00 in the
- 23:42morning, I get a couple miles up there and I'm thinking, I've
- 23:45never hiked with a pack this heavy.
- 23:47I think I weighed it was 42 lbs or something and I was thinking,
- 23:51oh Yikes, this is this, this might not be good.
- 23:54My legs are getting a little jello right now.
- 23:57But kept going, kept hiking and I remember getting above tree
- 24:02line. I had never been in the Prezis
- 24:04and I didn't even know what Mount Washington looked like.
- 24:07I hadn't seen pictures, like I didn't look it up really.
- 24:09I just had a map and I didn't know what any of this stuff
- 24:12looked like. So I'm getting up over tree line
- 24:15and I remember peeking out and I remember looking.
- 24:18So I went and did Madison in the dark and so I couldn't really
- 24:25see too, too much. I come down, I head up to Adams
- 24:28and it's starting to get sunrise and, and it, you know, it's
- 24:30gorgeous up there. It's a great day.
- 24:32It's not even super cold. It wasn't windy.
- 24:33It was an awesome day. And I look at so Adams, I think
- 24:38they're called the Adams 5. There's like 5 kind of peaks
- 24:40around that area and only one is an official like 4000 footer
- 24:43with prominence from the next mountain.
- 24:46But there's a handful of higher points peaks up there.
- 24:50And I remember looking up and thinking, this is so hilarious.
- 24:55If anyone can like picture this in their head right now, please
- 24:58stay with me. Looking at Adams and seeing the
- 25:01Adams 5 and instead of knowing it was the Adams five, I
- 25:05literally thought that's Adams, That's Jefferson, That's
- 25:09Washington. And I'm like, Oh my God, this is
- 25:12going to be actually kind of easy.
- 25:14Like I'm just a killer right now.
- 25:16And I didn't think they were all those five mountains.
- 25:18I think if you are kind of looking to the right before as
- 25:23the, as the Ridge starts to bend over towards Jefferson, I
- 25:27thought that that peak was was Washington and there's nothing
- 25:31over there. It's just like a higher points
- 25:33on a Ridge. And I remember thinking like,
- 25:35oh, Adams, Jefferson, Clay, Washington, boom.
- 25:38This is like I'm, I'm actually flying.
- 25:41I thought the pack was heavy, but I'm flying right now.
- 25:43This is going to be easy. So I keep hiking up and as
- 25:46hiking up the first Adam's five, I get kind of turned around
- 25:50because there's no marks. It's all wind drifted.
- 25:52It's winter and it's kind of crusted over.
- 25:55So there's no no one had been up there yet.
- 25:57And I get out my map and I'm like, Oh my God, though, I
- 26:00don't, I think I'm off the trail.
- 26:02So I kind of, I, I figure out where the trail is and I figure
- 26:05out where Adams is. I was like, oh, I'm a little
- 26:06disoriented right now. And I finally make it up to
- 26:09Adams. And as you Crest over Adams, I
- 26:12can just see Washington way the heck over there.
- 26:16Like, I'm not, I'm not even in the ballpark of Washington.
- 26:19And I, my heart dropped in my chest, out of my stomach
- 26:23thinking, Oh my God, I am not even close.
- 26:26I, I just thought that I skipped ahead 8 by 8 miles and I
- 26:32remember being shook in that moment.
- 26:34It was an awesome day. And it kind of just like
- 26:36rearranged like, Oh, this is going to take me like 12 hours,
- 26:40but I remember being like, oh, it's going to be easy.
- 26:43And just, I'd never been up there.
- 26:44I didn't even know what these mountains look like because
- 26:46everyone knows what Washington looks like.
- 26:48I didn't know. So that was the one funny part
- 26:50from that story. And then the other big thing was
- 26:53I had an ice axe with me. I got rid of, I gave, I gave it
- 26:58to somebody, I think, and I don't really think there are
- 27:02many places in the whites that you really need an ice axe if
- 27:04you're just hiking kind of 4000 footers, Like if there's crazy
- 27:07trails, yes, there's ice climbing places that you need an
- 27:10ice axe, but I don't really think there's a ton of those
- 27:14places that you really, really need in your arsenal.
- 27:17And so, but I had it for the Jefferson snow field.
- 27:21So that's like one place if it's icy, if it's, if it's kind of
- 27:24it's a steep little spot you got to get across.
- 27:26So that's why I had it and I knew the gist.
- 27:29Like I figured I would know where it is when I'm on it.
- 27:33But as I'm hiking over to Jefferson, I get to the
- 27:36Jefferson snow field and I'm hiking across and like I said,
- 27:39there had been no tracks up there.
- 27:40Or maybe there's one set of snowshoe tracks from the day
- 27:42before. So I'm kind of following that
- 27:45and I, I realized that all of the snow, the snow, the snow was
- 27:48kind of just like going off the trail and then just shooting
- 27:51down and I looked down and it is super steep and essentially I'm
- 27:55on the snow field like extremely steep grade.
- 27:58So the ice axe is if you start sliding down that you just use
- 28:02it to kind of self arrest. Is that the word self self
- 28:06arrest? So anyway, but I'm on this one
- 28:13tiny patch of, of snowshoe track and I have this huge 40 LB pack
- 28:20with the ice axe strapped down on the pack.
- 28:23And I'm thinking, I can't even reach my ice axe right now.
- 28:25I brought this stupid thing up here and I can't even use it.
- 28:28And I were thinking, well, I just got to keep walking
- 28:30straight. Like this is one of those things
- 28:32like, you know, mind over matter, like pretending you're
- 28:34not 40 feet up and just walk straight and kept walking.
- 28:38And there's a little like kind of rock area where somebody had
- 28:41stopped up and padded out kind of a A4 foot by 4 foot area.
- 28:45And even that was too weird for me to, with that big pack, sling
- 28:49it off and get the ice axe. So I was like, well, I did half
- 28:52of it without the ice axe. I'm just going to do the
- 28:54second-half without it too. And so I walked across it and I
- 28:58remember being like this, that was the stupidest thing.
- 29:01Like I'm totally alone up here. I don't know what I'm doing.
- 29:03I don't even know really what mountains I'm on and and I the
- 29:07one safety gear that I have I I'm not even using it.
- 29:11It's probably just hindering me because it's adding extra weight
- 29:13to my top side. O yeah, that was my first winter
- 29:17Prezi traverse story. Since then, I've had a ton of
- 29:20winter hiking. I think it's so funny to look
- 29:22back and think about that kid going out there and not knowing
- 29:26what he was doing. But it was a good learning
- 29:28experience. And like I said, I don't think
- 29:30it was super reckless because my mom, she dropped me off and was
- 29:32hiking Eisenhower was in the area.
- 29:35It was an awesome day weather wise.
- 29:37So it wasn't like I was doing anything super stupid, but that
- 29:40I did not know what I was doing out there.
- 29:42So that was a kind of Prezi Traverse story.
- 29:45I think I finished it and maybe close to 11 hours.
- 29:48And I remember being happy with that, which is so funny because
- 29:51those conditions were really good.
- 29:52And nowadays if I like it would be way like twice as fast,
- 29:57faster than twice as fast that was.
- 30:00So it's just funny to see how kind of how far I've come just
- 30:04getting out in these mountains. But that was the Prezi Traverse
- 30:07story. I thought it was funny.
- 30:08Got a kick out of it, especially today, maybe a little bit under
- 30:12prepared for the conditions I think.
- 30:17Yeah, I was kind of talking to Ryan about.
- 30:18This we essentially just did a 5 hour podcast without recording
- 30:21it, driving up together and then just going out there just
- 30:25talking all running stuff. We're we're very In Sync on a
- 30:28lot of a lot of training thoughts and and lots of stuff.
- 30:32So we'll definitely have him on the podcast.
- 30:34But yeah, we're kind of talking about their, I think experience
- 30:39in smart decision making can really save you.
- 30:42And honestly, fitness in a lot of areas, fitness can really
- 30:46save you in a lot of those kind of sketchy scenarios.
- 30:49And it's all about making good decisions.
- 30:52You know, I think everyone just screams like you got to have all
- 30:55the essentials and you got to have a sleep pad and everything.
- 30:57If something goes wrong, I think most of your risk is going to be
- 31:00in making good decisions and banking on experience.
- 31:04I've been in all sorts of of conditions up there and I know
- 31:08all the trails, like all the hard parts, all the steep parts
- 31:11where people are going to be where we could get help.
- 31:13So as long as I don't get hurt kind of thing, you can always
- 31:17mitigate. Like I don't have enough food or
- 31:19I'm not staying warm enough. Got to turn around, got to make
- 31:21decisions. I think it's all just making
- 31:23smart decisions out there. And you know, four years ago
- 31:27when I did that present reverse, I had 0 experience and now I
- 31:30have a lot more. So that kind of shows, I don't
- 31:34know, shows, shows risk in the mountains and, and just get out
- 31:37there when there's other people with other people and and you
- 31:41get more comfortable in the winter conditions.
- 31:43So yeah, that was a pretty traverse story.
- 31:47Next up, cutting down a Christmas tree.
- 31:52So cutting our Christmas tree. So Jocelyn and I, like I said,
- 31:55we, we got a Christmas tree. Basically you can, you can go
- 32:02into the White Mountain National Forest and cut down like a DIY
- 32:06your own Christmas tree. And it's $5 processing fee
- 32:11online is 250, so $7.50. Go pick your tree.
- 32:15And I think in what, you know, first you're doing it, it's
- 32:18like, oh, this is an awesome idea.
- 32:20Like it's so cool They do that. It's wet.
- 32:23You know, it's just a, it's just a cool idea.
- 32:24It's kind of an adventure. We go up there, we, we pick out
- 32:27the perfect tree. That's not how it went.
- 32:30So we get up there last weekend and I don't want to give away.
- 32:36I don't really think there are many.
- 32:38I don't think it's super secret where these trees are.
- 32:42I mean, maybe in my head, but essentially I'm looking online.
- 32:45There's a few different types of trees.
- 32:47So some trees are going to be better, thicker, fuller than
- 32:51other trees essentially. And there's a few different
- 32:53types that you can use if you go to a Christmas tree farm, I'm
- 32:56sure biohacking, they have the C's for the great genes, but a
- 33:01lot of the natural tree selection, they don't have those
- 33:05good genes. We haven't, we haven't mastered
- 33:09that. That corn or whatever the
- 33:11glycosite, it only kills certain gene.
- 33:14It kills everything except the corn gene, whatever, you know
- 33:16what I'm saying? Yeah, these trees are sparse.
- 33:20And so my idea was the higher up you go, like you see those trees
- 33:25as you get to kind of above tree line that look more Christmas
- 33:27tree, there's just more of those kind of trees up there.
- 33:31So my thought was just go to the highest point that you can kind
- 33:35of access easily from a road. So I'm not going to, I'm not
- 33:38going to spot, you know, say any spots.
- 33:43I don't want to step on any toes, but just go as high as you
- 33:46can and you're going to have a better selection.
- 33:48And that's what we found. But the rules are you can't get
- 33:53a tree within 100 feet of a road or a picnic area or a recreation
- 33:59area or anything like that. You need to really be over 100
- 34:02feet. And anywhere, you know, without
- 34:06getting to the tree line, which you can't drive up to, there's
- 34:08no place you can drive up to a tree line.
- 34:10At least I can't think of any right now.
- 34:15All all the places that the trees were growing and getting
- 34:19enough sunlight and getting full are near the edges of the roads
- 34:22are open areas with recreation areas where you can't really go
- 34:26get a tree. And so you go as high as you
- 34:28can. There's lots of good looking
- 34:30trees that you can see from the road, but then you go 100 feet
- 34:34off the road, there's nothing. It's all like crappy trees.
- 34:37Like little sprawny. Scrawny.
- 34:42Little trees and and that's what we found.
- 34:47And so it was really tough. So we had a handful of spots and
- 34:51we got up there. I think we started looking at
- 34:53like 1:30 and we're like, all right, we have lots of time,
- 34:55lots of time before it gets dark.
- 34:56So let's hit a few of these spots.
- 34:58Let's really make this an adventure.
- 35:00So we see one spot. We actually found a decent
- 35:01little tree, but like, all right, well, we like this tree,
- 35:03but we're not going to take it home.
- 35:05And I kind of started making this joke that Justin was
- 35:07feeling bad about it. I was like being the tree being
- 35:09like, no, please don't leave me if you don't come back and get
- 35:12me. I can't take this cold anymore.
- 35:14Please, please cut me down, take you, take me into your home,
- 35:17your warm home, decorate me with ornaments.
- 35:20And she was like, Andrew, stop, you're going to make me feel
- 35:22bad. So anyway, so we had this tree,
- 35:25but we ended up leaving it and we're like, if we can't find
- 35:27another tree, we're going to come back and get this tree.
- 35:31So we go out, we check another spot and there's lots of snow up
- 35:34there and it's hard to walk around off trail areas.
- 35:39So, and it's kind of just too thick and, and we're not seeing
- 35:41any trees like, all right, that's a bus.
- 35:43So we go to the next spot and it's like, now we can't get 100
- 35:45feet from a road. Like the trees that we thought
- 35:48looked good, we can't get 100 feet.
- 35:50You know, we want to be all legal, you know, abide by the
- 35:54law. So we skip that one.
- 35:56And then we go to a couple places and then we're in this
- 35:58kind of getting, we're going back and forth, look, you know,
- 36:01looking at some of these spots. And then it's 2:30 and then it's
- 36:042:45 and then it's 3 and I'm thinking, Oh my gosh, I don't
- 36:08know what we're going to do. So we end up flying back to that
- 36:10first tree. We're like, we're going to give
- 36:12you a home buddy. We're going to love you like we,
- 36:14you know, we're going to feed you good.
- 36:16It's going to be dandy and we. Get up there and it's it's.
- 36:20Near an area, a man made area up there but it was further enough
- 36:29away that it was way over 100 feet.
- 36:32But then I go to the thing and there was a big sign that said
- 36:34no Christmas tree chopping on it.
- 36:37And in my head, it's kind of like, we shouldn't.
- 36:40No, I shouldn't say that. You know, I'm putting this on
- 36:42the Internet now, but I wish I didn't see that sign.
- 36:45And I could have just cut it all legal and be like, oh, crap, you
- 36:47know, we already cut it. I don't know.
- 36:48We got to bring it home. But I saw the sign and I was
- 36:51like, Justin, we really shouldn't cut that tree.
- 36:53I don't know why this sign is here.
- 36:56I know we're abiding by all the rules online, but this just says
- 37:00no cutting of trees. It feels weird if we pull a tree
- 37:03out of here. So then it's like, ah, whatever.
- 37:06So then I'm like, all right, we just have to go to a lower
- 37:08elevation where there's a trail and we just cover some ground
- 37:11and we try to find a good tree. Didn't work either.
- 37:15All of the trees are just these scrawny little trees.
- 37:18And at this point I'm thinking like, all right, we just have to
- 37:20take 1 of this is like, we got to take one of these home.
- 37:23None of these puppies are are, you know, there's always
- 37:26there's, I don't know, maybe I have to cut that out.
- 37:28You know, there's, there's not going to be a perfect tree.
- 37:30We're not going to come around a corner and there's going to be
- 37:32just this glowing. We just got to make one work
- 37:36that we think is quirky or whatever.
- 37:38And honestly, Johnson's not having it.
- 37:40I'm like, oh gosh, OK, there's one spot that we didn't die.
- 37:45It was kind of like a spot you had to work to get towards.
- 37:48We didn't go down there. Let's go try that.
- 37:50And we get there and honestly, one person was cutting up a tree
- 37:53and then this other person had this nice tree.
- 37:56I didn't know where this guy got this tree, but he had this nice
- 37:59tree. I told him I was like, dude, you
- 38:00could start a timber company with that tree.
- 38:02That tree is a perfect tree. Holy smokes.
- 38:06And he was like, and I was like, dude, we've been out here for
- 38:09way longer. I thought this would be easy and
- 38:11fun. This is ridiculous.
- 38:13And he goes, Yep, we, we did it for the first time last year and
- 38:16it is not as easy as you think. And he was like, but this is
- 38:19where we ended up. And I was like, oh, well, we
- 38:22made it here. We were at a decent tree spot,
- 38:24at least on this guy's terms. And this guy just cut down this
- 38:27honker of a tree. So we kind of asked him where.
- 38:30He got it. Hopefully he had a little
- 38:32brother or cousin or something going on over there.
- 38:34We could, we could take it home, but we go over there and it's
- 38:37kind of like it wasn't a good area.
- 38:39But then there's one last year we get to and there's a handful
- 38:42of like decent trees. It was the right type of tree.
- 38:45I don't know exactly what the pulse it was some sort of fir
- 38:48tree. I know it was some sort of fir
- 38:50tree, but it was the right type. It had decent genes.
- 38:54It was just missing a little bit of oomph in the middle area.
- 38:57But well, at this point it was getting dark.
- 38:59And this is like we had to pick a tree.
- 39:01So we picked the best tree. We cut it down, we brought it
- 39:04home, we decorated it, gave it water, gave it heat, and we're
- 39:08going to love it with all our might.
- 39:10That's the Christmas tree story. I really just thought.
- 39:12And so it just turned into a fiasco.
- 39:14So here are my thoughts. If you want a Christmas tree,
- 39:17you ever want to cut down a Christmas tree?
- 39:19It is a fun activity. I think it is a cool activity.
- 39:22It feels good to cut down your own, you know, tree in a kind of
- 39:25a sustainable way. You know, the forest is a
- 39:27billion trees up there. It's cheaper.
- 39:29It's a fun activity. Have your dream tree GPS marked
- 39:36during summer conditions because in the summer it's way easy to
- 39:39walk around, but with all the snow up there it was hard.
- 39:43You either had snowshoes or it's super deep and when you're off
- 39:45trail it's like a crapshoot anyway.
- 39:47It's so slow moving. So pro tip if you want to get a
- 39:51Christmas tree, plan ahead early.
- 39:53If you're going up to the whites, just take an hour after
- 39:55a hike and find a good spot with a tree.
- 39:58Find a tree you want. Have agps point second pro tip.
- 40:02Everybody was going the week after Thanksgiving, we saw tons
- 40:06of cars driving out of blank. Road.
- 40:11Highway. Blank up there getting trees.
- 40:14So it's like maybe it's not even a secret, like you just look.
- 40:17They said if you call a Forest Service, they'll tell you where
- 40:21you can get some. So we never called because it
- 40:24was the weekend or something. But I'm sure it's not a secret.
- 40:27But we saw lots of people hauling their trees out.
- 40:29And honestly, the first couple we were thinking, and that
- 40:32ain't, I ain't bringing that tree home.
- 40:34That ain't a tree for us. But then we realized why all of
- 40:37these trees looked like that. But I think we got a pretty
- 40:40decent tree. And so the second tip, wait, GPS
- 40:45it. Oh, the second tip, everyone
- 40:46goes the weekend after Thanksgiving because you know,
- 40:50Thanksgiving, you don't want to step on Thanksgiving toes,
- 40:53right? Like it's it's a big holiday.
- 40:55It's his own holiday. You don't want to step on his
- 40:56toe. You definitely don't want to RIP
- 40:59into Thanksgiving food because that would be a dumb idea.
- 41:02So you don't want to do that. And so so we didn't want to go
- 41:09that week and we wait the next weekend.
- 41:10Everyone else is thinking that. So pro tip, Thanksgiving Inns
- 41:14may do a little bit Black Friday shopping that Saturday, Sunday,
- 41:17go get your tree because you're going to have a better
- 41:19selection. If that guy didn't get that
- 41:21beautiful tree, that could have been our tree.
- 41:23So I think go early, look for trees often when you're up
- 41:27there. And that's how you're going to
- 41:29get a good Christmas tree in the White Mountains.
- 41:31And I think the best way to do it is just hike up one of these
- 41:34mountains above tree line. There's a couple.
- 41:37Yeah. I don't know.
- 41:37There's lots of those good trees.
- 41:40The, the higher up you get, the better off you're going to be.
- 41:42And no one's going to go up there, make a full day hike of
- 41:45out of it, bring a sled or something and mark it like
- 41:49there's a certain type of tree that you can see it when you you
- 41:53know it. When you see it is a Christmas
- 41:54tree, you have to find patches of those types.
- 41:57So whenever you see that on certain trails, note it, go
- 42:00back, get your Christmas tree. Things will be dandy.
- 42:04That was a Christmas tree talk. OK, Next up, the fantasy
- 42:08football rant. Bum, bum, bum.
- 42:14Me and my buddy Bori. Who actually might have him on
- 42:17the podcast? That would be an awesome
- 42:19episode, guys. I love John Bori and I want that
- 42:23on the camera and on the Internet.
- 42:26We. Co manage a football team.
- 42:28This is I've done lots of football teams and I love
- 42:31watching football. I'm a pass fan, not like die
- 42:35hard. So I feel like I can't I can't
- 42:37be crazy when they're when they're really good.
- 42:39I can't be like all in your face.
- 42:40But when they're really bad because I don't really care that
- 42:42much when they're really bad. But obviously grew up in the
- 42:44Brady era. Pats fan have been playing
- 42:46fantasy football, specifically in one league, the Merrimack bad
- 42:50boys shout out Jake Chambers league for like 16 years or
- 42:56something crazy. We started when we were like 10
- 42:58or whatever, and so it's been a long running league and that's
- 43:02kind of the one league that I got to.
- 43:04I did a couple other leagues and it just got too much check on
- 43:06the lineup. So I'm just so busy.
- 43:07I couldn't keep up. But that's the one league we're
- 43:10still in and everyone now has Co managers, which is actually fun.
- 43:14I like having a Co manager because you live and die with
- 43:18this with with your boy and that's what I'm doing with Bori
- 43:21and we've been doing a lot of dying on this on in the podcast,
- 43:25but are in the the fantasy Football League.
- 43:27But 5th in the league in points scored.
- 43:31We put up numbers every week, every single week.
- 43:35We're we're we, we had Jamar Chase, we have Josh Allen, we
- 43:38have Josh Jacobs. We have all of these people just
- 43:42going off. And every week we go against a
- 43:46high score. We're we have like by over 100
- 43:48points, the most points allowed. We missed the playoffs this year
- 43:52and it's just so frustrating. Obviously the points for I know
- 43:56some leagues do where you pretty much they.
- 44:00Don't even go by matchup. Stats they go by total points 4,
- 44:03which is I think there's something to do with maybe
- 44:05consistency, Like I like consistent players over just
- 44:08people that go off one week versus not.
- 44:10But I, you know, who knows different arguments, but it
- 44:13really stings when you put I mean, it just feels like we're
- 44:17both giving away $50 every year in this league.
- 44:19The last three years we have just been getting absolutely
- 44:23annihilated. The first year we did fantasy
- 44:25together. Oh, we go on the seven O run and
- 44:28fantasy the first year were Co managers and every Tuesday we're
- 44:32getting on the phone after work, we're laughing, we're making
- 44:35jokes. We can't be beat.
- 44:37No, everybody's going off boom boom, but I can't even remember.
- 44:40We had it on a team and it's just like we love fantasy.
- 44:43This is amazing. Just talking smack the whole 9
- 44:46and and ever since that run, we have just had nothing but losing
- 44:52seasons. And it's just getting it's
- 44:55getting so much to bear. And I think honestly, I have to
- 44:57talk to the commissioner because we have the same, we have the
- 45:02same schedule every year. And you don't play everybody
- 45:05twice. You only play a few teams twice.
- 45:08And every year we're getting Big Jim, Lil Jim twice.
- 45:11We're getting, I can't say some of these fancy team names on the
- 45:14I really get we're getting some of these teams twice and it's a
- 45:18it's A1 keeper dynasty and maybe we're getting the good teams.
- 45:22I don't know. But fantasy football, it can
- 45:25just be heartbreaking sometimes. I feel like you put in so much
- 45:28that I can't even watch. If I have two guys going that I
- 45:31need to get X amount of points on a Monday night, I can't watch
- 45:34it because I get too invested. If they get the points, I'm so
- 45:37excited. If they don't, I'm upset and I
- 45:39can't go to bed, you know, at a good time.
- 45:42It's insane. And I am just, it's it's strange
- 45:46how some people are just good at fantasy and some people are just
- 45:49bad at fantasy because of injuries.
- 45:50You never know. I think I am just bad at fantasy
- 45:56and and it's brutal. So that's the fantasy football
- 46:00update, but OK last topic of the day, Stranger things.
- 46:06Do we do a motivational minute today?
- 46:08Do I have something? Maybe I.
- 46:10Do have something? But Stranger Things.
- 46:14Started watching Stranger. Things I am on season 3 right
- 46:18now so no spoilers. No spoilers at all because I
- 46:22know season 5's getting out. I haven't been seeing any of the
- 46:25season 5 stuff so I really I have no idea.
- 46:30Yeah, I really, I really have. No idea what happens or you
- 46:35know, I haven't really seen anything and so I'm just
- 46:37watching it for what it is. So what do I think about
- 46:40Stranger Things? The first week I was watching
- 46:43Stranger. The first season I was watching
- 46:45Stranger Things. I was remember thinking, what is
- 46:50this show? This is like somebody told me it
- 46:52was kind of a scary show and the first few episodes just like
- 46:56didn't seem real. It wasn't scary because it
- 46:58wasn't realistic and it was just kind of like it almost felt a
- 47:01little bit goofy. Some of the stuff that was in it
- 47:04was just like a little bit goofy and but whatever, I keep
- 47:07watching it and obviously the first season is pretty good.
- 47:09You kind of get the, you get the hooks in some good storylines
- 47:12going on there and and. It was good.
- 47:16So then I kind of. Got into it and then I think I
- 47:19watched maybe half a season 2 and it was, it was maybe a
- 47:22little bit slower, but I was still liking it.
- 47:26But it was yeah, it kind of just stopped watching it.
- 47:30But then the season 5 came out at their ad campaign eventually
- 47:36got to me and I was like, oh, I kind of want to catch up.
- 47:38There's only two, you know, 2 1/2 seasons.
- 47:41So we started watching it again and finished out season 2.
- 47:44I mean, the end of season 2 was just it was just beautiful.
- 47:48The thing that I like about that show is you get all the
- 47:51characters in that show, all the all the main characters and
- 47:55they're all doing side quests. But at least it, you know, a
- 47:59couple times so far, they all kind of come together and
- 48:02discover things kind of at the same time and they all pop up in
- 48:05the you know, it's TV timing, but it's kind of like a feel
- 48:08good. Like I like when the gangs
- 48:09together. I like when when the whole gang
- 48:12is together. I like when Jonathan and Nancy
- 48:14figure something out and they they eventually.
- 48:16I like when the kids finally all come together and they meet up.
- 48:20I like when Hopper and Winona Ryder forget her name.
- 48:25They kind of team up and realize what's going on.
- 48:27Like, no, this is a real thing, guys.
- 48:28I like when they all come together and then when Elle
- 48:31comes in and and does her thing, Oh my God, slam dunk.
- 48:36It is just, it's just good vibes and.
- 48:40Yeah, when? When we were.
- 48:41Watching this last season, so the end of season 2, I kind of
- 48:44forget the whole scheme of things.
- 48:45Oh, it's growing, right. It's this is so we're going to
- 48:48do spoilers for me. Just don't, don't comment and
- 48:51spoil it for me. I'll spoil when I watch for
- 48:54everything else, I guess. But no, this is a warning if
- 48:56you, if you haven't watched through season 2, go back.
- 49:00But yeah, season 2 when the virus is spreading right, when
- 49:04it's growing underneath, when these puppies are getting out,
- 49:06these little weird black fucking face puppies are getting out,
- 49:12You know, it's all building up. It was, it was.
- 49:15Oh, what is that guy's name with the hair, with the three
- 49:18Hairspray guy? We, that guy, he started out the
- 49:21worst. Now we love that guy.
- 49:23I forget his name, God Dang it. But but yeah, that guy with the
- 49:27hair, it's him. It's the kids.
- 49:30They're in their battle bus and oh, was that the was that the
- 49:33Oh, and they kind of fight off a couple of those little lizard
- 49:36guys and then something calls them the way and they kind of
- 49:39get saved, you know, like, Oh my God, this is getting crazy.
- 49:42The next time when they bring the infected guy, I'm not good
- 49:47with the names, but that infected kid, that kind of weird
- 49:50kid, when he's infected, they get him in the room and they
- 49:55figure out he's a spy, right? They figure out he's a spy and
- 49:59they're saying he needs to not know where he is.
- 50:01So they screen up his whole shed so he doesn't know where he is.
- 50:04They tie him up on the screen and they wake him up with that
- 50:06little gas because Winona had just stabbed him out with the in
- 50:10the doctor's room with that, you know, with the sedative.
- 50:15They wake him up and he starts freaking out.
- 50:16Where am I? Where am I?
- 50:18Oh my God, that's the guy was like, Oh my God, he's freaking
- 50:20out. But finally he comes down.
- 50:21They start talking to him to try to bring Will back out and he
- 50:26doesn't know where they are. But then the phone rings and he
- 50:30hears it's his house's phone and he knows where they are.
- 50:33And so all of a sudden the, you know, this the guy, the the big
- 50:37scary guy, I don't even know the bug, He starts sending his
- 50:41puppies over to them. And you're thinking, last time
- 50:44they got lucky with with all the kids like them getting scared
- 50:48away. This time they're so screwed.
- 50:50Like, what is going to happen? It's just, you know, it's over.
- 50:54And then they get in the house. Everyone gets in the house.
- 50:56And it's so funny, you know, Jonathan Pick or that guy with
- 51:00the hair picks up the spike bat. They all got a little something.
- 51:03Nancy's got the rifle. She can shoot it.
- 51:05I can shoot it. And and Hopper's just that got
- 51:08his Akit. And you're like, God, just get
- 51:10behind Hopper and we'll let this guy work.
- 51:12And and you hear the noise, you're like, Oh my God, it is
- 51:16those things. And then all of a sudden you
- 51:18hear that crap and then nothing. And you're like, Oh my God.
- 51:23And right in that moment I was like she's back and wouldn't you
- 51:29know the door lock clink door opens and your girl L shows up
- 51:36nose bleeding. What's up gang?
- 51:39Like the aw, that moment was so good.
- 51:41So they gang up and then she goes and she closes the portal,
- 51:45which was awesome. She goes and closes the portal,
- 51:47which was huge and season 2 ended like it's perfect.
- 51:50Everyone is feeling good, the crew, the gangs together.
- 51:53We like all the good characters LS back.
- 51:56What what you know, this is awesome.
- 51:58Season 3 rolls around and we're I'm in the monkey business right
- 52:01now. There's monkey business going on
- 52:04at the mall. There's the Russian stuff going
- 52:06on at the mall. Dustin come home from camp.
- 52:09There's turmoil in between all of the parties, the teenagers,
- 52:13they get in relationships to get in fights to break up all this
- 52:17stuff. And and you're at first I was
- 52:21kind of thinking like, I don't know if I really love the season
- 52:24just because it's too much kind of fighting.
- 52:26Hopper's kind of being annoying. Elle's kind of being an L and
- 52:29Mike are kind of being annoying. Like there's a lot of kind of
- 52:31annoying stuff going on. The crews kind of break it up.
- 52:33Will dude wants to play Dungeons and Dragons so bad.
- 52:37Nobody will play Dungeons and Dragons with this kid.
- 52:41He got all this stuff going on. And but then you find out, oh,
- 52:46there's some Russian. I don't know if the, the reactor
- 52:49is in Russia or what, but you find out there's Russians the
- 52:53the mall coding. So I'm at the point where the
- 52:56hair guy, the New Girl who works at the the dairy scoop place and
- 53:00then Dustin, they just crack the code and they're watching
- 53:03Russians. You know, they're figuring
- 53:05something out. Nancy and Jonathan with the
- 53:07rats, they're figuring something out.
- 53:09And then Winona with the magnets and the science guy.
- 53:13We love the science guy. The science guy is the best they
- 53:17they're figuring out. So they're all about to figure
- 53:19out this thing's back. And I think Elle has already
- 53:21figured out she's done some of the dream things and she's seen
- 53:24so Billy. Everyone hates Billy.
- 53:29I actually think this is a controversial, but I think
- 53:33obviously we hate Billy. He's the worst, but I think he's
- 53:36a good character. He plays the character really,
- 53:39really well. I kind of compared it.
- 53:41At first I was saying it's kind of like Joffrey in Game of
- 53:43Thrones. You hate this guy, he's the
- 53:45worst, but it's like, God, he's such a good villain.
- 53:48But then I was thinking, I think it's more like Cersei, because
- 53:52Joffrey really was just the absolute worst in Billy.
- 53:56I can kind of see a little bit of he really like, you know,
- 54:01when he spared that the the hot mom or whatever, that scene that
- 54:05was too much in season 1. That was too much in season 2.
- 54:07It was too much. But when he spares her and
- 54:09doesn't kill her and walks away, it's kind of like a little it
- 54:12was kind of like a nice thing, you know, that maybe you
- 54:15overlook. And then when his, you know,
- 54:17when his dad's like beating on him, you kind of feel for him in
- 54:20that in that sense too. So I feel like he's more of like
- 54:23a Cersei. He has a couple good moments,
- 54:25but this guy just stinks. But he's infected, and Max and
- 54:29Elle just found them at that place because Elle had the
- 54:31visions. And they go into this house, and
- 54:34they're all just looking great, eating dinner.
- 54:36Oh, hey, this is my daughter, Max.
- 54:39Maxine, What are you doing here? You're all soaking wet.
- 54:41Oh, wow. Good to see you.
- 54:43Yeah, everything's great. Mr. Wheeler, how are you doing?
- 54:46Oh, of course. Of course.
- 54:47And then Elle's like, no, I saw that girl and then the girls
- 54:51there. Hi, Heather.
- 54:52Hi. And then and then Ellen Max are
- 54:55just kind of confused, like what is going on?
- 54:57They walk out of the door and then immediately building that
- 55:00girl just kill her parents. And it's like, oh man, the death
- 55:03the devil's that that thing is taking people down.
- 55:07And and so anyway, the score, Stranger Things is getting its
- 55:11hooks in me. I want to get through season 3
- 55:14and then get through season 4 so I can just watch Season 5.
- 55:17I think the whole thing's out, right?
- 55:19Is that how they do it on Netflix now?
- 55:21But I think the whole thing's out.
- 55:25But, but anyway, that's I'm, I'm in on stranger things.
- 55:31So if you're watching Stranger Things season 5, hopefully it's
- 55:34good. Hopefully it's good.
- 55:36All right. Can I pull a quote out right
- 55:38now? Oh God, I just, I feel like I
- 55:40had a couple good quotes, but I I, oh, here we go.
- 55:48We're just going to pull a quick quote here.
- 55:50I remember this one. This one has doesn't really have
- 55:53a ton to do with training. Maybe it's a ton to do running.
- 55:55This wasn't a huge running heavy podcast, but we had some topics
- 55:59that we had to discuss. I don't know, we had to do it.
- 56:03Being rich is having lots of money.
- 56:06Being wealthy is having lots of time.
- 56:10If you are, no matter how old you are, it's always you're the
- 56:14youngest you're going to be right now, right?
- 56:17If you're just going through the motions of, of, of going to
- 56:21work, doing your thing, you know, if you have a family, all
- 56:25these things, you know, life is super busy.
- 56:28I think it's easy to go through the motions and get kind of, you
- 56:32know, maybe sometimes you lose track of priorities just because
- 56:36things get busy and things get get tough.
- 56:40Sometimes You're the youngest you're ever going to be right
- 56:43now. We are time rich.
- 56:45If you ask yourself in 20 years, if you could trade all of your
- 56:48all of your money and all of your everything for the time
- 56:51that you have right now, you would do it no questions asked.
- 56:55So wherever you are in life, this is you got to go for it.
- 56:59If you have a dream, you have to go now.
- 57:02It's like you get one life. I heard you have to be running
- 57:08as fast as you can at whatever the biggest dreams you have are
- 57:11and what you want to do. You just have to go because the
- 57:15second best time was 20 years ago.
- 57:17The best time was 20 years ago, the second best time right now.
- 57:21Don't let time escape you. I feel like time, time is weird.
- 57:26When you're sitting at work, time goes by slow.
- 57:29When you're doing things you want, time goes by fast.
- 57:31When you're really, really busy and you're strung out, time goes
- 57:33by fast. And I think you lose
- 57:36perspective. Sometimes I feel like time is
- 57:38going by really, really slow when I'm when I'm looking at
- 57:42certain things in my life. But then other times I look at
- 57:45certain things I'm like, wow, that was X amount of years ago.
- 57:48And so I think the New Year's is always a great time to kind of
- 57:52do that. It's a great time to kind of
- 57:54reflect on new goals and stuff. But right now, if you have
- 57:58goals, if you have big dreams, you have to be running as fast
- 58:01as you can at it. That doesn't mean give up all
- 58:04these things that you have going on.
- 58:05Just make sure you're intentional with your time.
- 58:08And if you're sitting on your phone for X amount of hours a
- 58:11day and you're not where you want to be, you can only blame
- 58:15yourself like you got to. And I'm I'm to blame.
- 58:17Trust me, this phone is addicting.
- 58:19You know, you get sucked back in and I try to pull out of it, but
- 58:23it sucks you back in. But you got to keep your goals
- 58:26and your priorities at the forefront and not let it get
- 58:28washed away in life because if you do it just it's going to go
- 58:32by quick and and we're time wealthy right now.
- 58:36We got to use it. But all right, that's enough for
- 58:39today. Like I said, we got a couple
- 58:41guests coming on the podcast eventually.
- 58:44I don't know exactly actually how it's going to work.
- 58:46I was kind of, I have two mics, but yeah, I'm going to have to.
- 58:51But eventually I wanted, I want to have other people on the
- 58:54podcast. Yeah.
- 58:57And and really, you know, start letting people we, we got to get
- 59:01this Northeast trail running scene popping.
- 59:04And if I can help that in any way, that's what I want to do.
- 59:07So trying to cover all the races, trying to talk about all
- 59:11the times winners a little bit slower.
- 59:13I'm going to mix in some of this fun stuff because I just like
- 59:16talking about this fun stuff. So I'm just going to keep doing
- 59:20it. So hopefully some people enjoy
- 59:21it. Maybe you don't, it's all good.
- 59:23But if you're still listening, thank you so much.
- 59:27I appreciate I've gotten a lot and it's obviously it's not like
- 59:31a crazy amount, but I've gotten, you know, a dozen, maybe a
- 59:35little, you know, some handfuls of comments from people like,
- 59:38oh, you know, I enjoy, I enjoy listening.
- 59:40I love listening to her. Keep going.
- 59:42Like it's awesome. Good for you.
- 59:43I like this. I like that every single one of
- 59:46those comments has kept me going, I feel.
- 59:49Yeah, I have lots of things to talk about next week.
- 59:51I think it might be a decent episode for some things I want
- 59:54to talk about running related in the whole kind of the whole
- 59:58scheme of things. But yeah.
- 1:00:01If, if anything nice that's been said to me has helped me keep
- 1:00:04going and, and I really appreciate it.
- 1:00:07Anyone listening. And I would just want to, like I
- 1:00:09said, keep talking about Northeast Trail stuff.
- 1:00:11There's lots of cool things going on.
- 1:00:14And I want to talk about as much of that stuff as I possibly can
- 1:00:18in a way that's going to help people, maybe entertain people a
- 1:00:21little bit and, and, and get this thing going.
- 1:00:24So yeah, lots of fun stuff coming in on the coming
- 1:00:28episodes. And until then, yeah.
- 1:00:32Get on some trails, run a. Little bit, get faster.
- 1:00:36All right, We'll see you next time.
- 1:00:39Peace. Yeah, I'm, I am, is.
- 1:00:47This still recording the video is off, but yeah, sometimes on
- 1:00:50these outros I say some weird things, but we we keeping it all
- 1:00:53right, see you next week.
