- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. And when you're ready, let's
- 0:30dive into God's Word together. In Acts Chapter 9, we read the
- 0:45miraculous conversion of Saul of Tarsus, who we know is the
- 0:48apostle Paul. Saul was a persecutor of the
- 0:51church. In Acts chapter 8, he's
- 0:53described as being in hearty agreement with putting Stephen
- 0:55to death, and in verse 3 of the same chapter it says but Saul
- 0:59began ravaging the church, entering house after house and
- 1:02dragging off men and women. He would put them in prison.
- 1:05Fast forward to Chapter 9, our chapter today, and we read in
- 1:08verses 1 and 2. Now Saul, still breathing
- 1:11threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to
- 1:14the high priest and asked for letters from him to the
- 1:17synagogues at Damascus so that if he found any belonging to the
- 1:20way both men and women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.
- 1:25Then something happened, something miraculous, something
- 1:29astounding, something extraordinary.
- 1:32God got a hold of Saul. Listen to this account.
- 1:36As he was travelling, it happened that he was approaching
- 1:37Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him,
- 1:42and he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him,
- 1:44Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?
- 1:48And he said, Who are you, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus, whom
- 1:52you are persecuting. But get up and enter the city,
- 1:55and it will be told to you what you must do.
- 1:57And from there, Saul, helped by a man named Ananias, is a
- 2:00changed man. He's baptized, and he stops
- 2:03persecuting the church and begins proclaiming the gospel of
- 2:06Jesus Christ. We'll continue to read more
- 2:09about the apostle Paul in the particular way that God uses him
- 2:11in his redemptive plan. But the story of today is that
- 2:14God took someone who was a great enemy of the church, a great
- 2:18tormentor of God's people, and turned him into, as he calls him
- 2:21in verse 15, a chosen instrument of mine to bear my name before
- 2:26the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel.
- 2:29This story is powerful and miraculous, and the conversion
- 2:32of Saul is a great moment in the history of the church.
- 2:35But I don't want you to miss this.
- 2:36Saul was no more separated from God than you or I were before we
- 2:40met Jesus. Saul was an enemy of God, and
- 2:43God made him his friend and brothers and sisters.
- 2:46We were enemies of God, rejecting everything he says is
- 2:50good and choosing our own way until God made a move toward us.
- 2:54You see, the miracle of Saul's conversion is not how it
- 2:57happened, or to whom it happened, or even what happened
- 3:00to Saul after he was converted. No, the miracle is that a holy
- 3:03God intervened in the life of a sinful man and took someone who
- 3:08was far from him and brought him near.
- 3:10And that miracle, that life changing, mind blowing, bringing
- 3:14a dead man to life miracle is one that happens every single
- 3:17time a Sinner is brought into the Kingdom of God.
- 3:20What we see in Saul's Damascus Rd. experience is the visible
- 3:24outworking of the spiritual reality that takes place every
- 3:27time someone repents and believes the gospel.
- 3:29And every single time, no matter the circumstances, that work of
- 3:33salvation that God performs is a miracle.
- 3:37Praise the Lord that He is still in the saving business.
- 3:40Praise Him that He's still performing the miracle of
- 3:43bringing sinners into his family.
- 3:45And if you're in Christ, don't miss the miracle He's performed
- 3:48in your life. And if you're not, give your
- 3:51heart and life over to Him and watch him transform you, just
- 3:55like he did to Saul of Tarsus.
