- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's word together. Listen to Jesus words in Luke
- 0:451412 through 14 after he had been invited to dine at the home
- 0:49of one of the leaders of the Pharisees, and he also went on
- 0:52to say to the one who had invited him.
- 0:55When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your
- 0:57friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors,
- 1:00otherwise they may also invite you in return, and that will be
- 1:03your repayment. But when you give a reception,
- 1:06invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you
- 1:09will be blessed, since they do not have the means to repay you,
- 1:13for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.
- 1:17What we have here is reminiscent of what Jesus has said in
- 1:19passages like Matthew 6 and is all about the motives of our
- 1:23heart. Jesus instructs this man who has
- 1:26invited him to dine to go out of his way not to invite the
- 1:29honored or wealthy, but rather to invite the poor, the
- 1:33crippled, the lame, and the blind.
- 1:35Why? What is so important about a
- 1:38guest list? Jesus is juxtaposing two kinds
- 1:42of generosity or hospitality. There is a generosity that is
- 1:46for show and a generosity that is genuine.
- 1:49There is a hospitality that is intended to impress and
- 1:52hospitality that is intended to bless.
- 1:55A hospitality that is meant to elevate others opinion of you,
- 1:59and hospitality that is meant to elevate others themselves.
- 2:03Think about your own life when you go out of your way to honor
- 2:07those who are already honorable, those who are already wealthy,
- 2:11or those who already have a sort of celebrity status.
- 2:14Whether in your community, your family, your school, wherever.
- 2:17It is easy for that to be in an effort to receive something in
- 2:21return. It is easy to lend a helping
- 2:23hand to someone who you know may feel obligated and able to repay
- 2:28you for your help. It's much harder to do that for
- 2:31someone who does not have the means to repay you.
- 2:34It's easy to invite a family over who you know has a nice
- 2:37house and the means to return your invitation with a gourmet
- 2:40meal and your honour. It's much harder to extend an
- 2:43invite to someone who would never be able to return the
- 2:45favour. But here is where the rubber
- 2:48meets the road for our faith. Jesus tells us that genuine
- 2:51generosity, that generosity that is open-ended, that is not
- 2:55seeking any earthly return on investment, that generosity will
- 2:59be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.
- 3:02That generosity is seen by God and will be specifically honored
- 3:06by Him. Those acts of kindness done in
- 3:09Jesus name, to the least of these, those will be repaid not
- 3:12by the recipients themselves, but by God.
- 3:16And so when we pour out generosity, hospitality and
- 3:19kindness on those who could never repay it, we live not for
- 3:23the honor and recognition of this world, but for the glory
- 3:26and reward in another world, in that better country, that
- 3:30eternal life that God has promised to all that love him.
- 3:34So live for that better reward. Be generous not with the
- 3:37expectation of receiving an immediate return on your
- 3:40generosity. Be hospitable, not with the hope
- 3:43of receiving a reciprocal invitation.
- 3:46Do these things for the Lord's sake and receive the reward that
- 3:50only the Lord is able to give.
